Masemola Summons: Purging Top SAPS Brass Is the Only Path to Restoring Public Confidence

The post MASEMOLA SUMMONS: PURGING TOP SAPS BRASS IS THE ONLY PATH TO RESTORING PUBLIC CONFIDENCE appeared first on For Good.

GOOD Statement by Brett Herron, Unite for Change Leadership Council Member & GOOD Secretary-General:

For the past six months, the nation has watched the Madlanga Commission picking apart the integrity of the suspended Police Minister and a swathe of the top police brass.

The news that National Commissioner of Police, Fannie Masemola, was served with a notice to appear in court today and will join 12 of his senior officers in the dock next month in connection with a cancelled R360m police health tender is a major setback for crime fighting and public confidence.

It is assumed that the Commissioner will be placed on suspension, joining a number of already suspended officers, the suspended Police Minister and the suspended Intelligence Inspector-General on the sidelines.

The President and Acting Police Minister cannot wait for the slow-turning wheels of justice to turn, while the country continues to suffer radical rates of violent crime and gangsterism, and continuing state corruption.

There’s an urgent need for a new top layer in the police. Serious consideration should be given to appointing a panel of experts of unimpeachable character (including criminologists, former prosecutors and police) to oversee the purging of the rot and development of a trustworthy top structure of untainted and un-factional police officers.

In the meantime, the National Prosecuting Authority and IDAC have critical roles to demonstrate that there are consequences for criminal policemen and women.
