The Mangaung Metro has lost more than R1,6 billion worth of water over the past five financial years.
The Free State MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Saki Mokoena, released these figures in response to a question by the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) in the Free State Legislature.
The losses are mainly the result of leakages and poor infrastructure maintenance over the past three decades under ANC rule.
The MEC’s reply also indicated that the water losses increased dramatically from R186 million in 2018/19 to a staggering R454 million in 2022/23.
In addition, Mangaung’s debt to Vaal Central Water exceeds R900 million.
In a previous reply to a question by the Freedom Front Plus, Mokoena confirmed that the total water losses for the entire Free State over the same period amount to more than R7 billion.
While residents have to shell out more for services every year, the ANC-controlled Municipality keeps spending more on salaries and less on much-needed infrastructure maintenance.
The only way to restore the Free State is to oust the ANC from power in the upcoming elections.
The Freedom Front Plus is ready to restore financial order and discipline to safeguard taxpayers’ money and prioritise service delivery in Mangaung.
