FWDKF: Why did you want to intern with the FW de Klerk Foundation?
SN: I am particularly drawn to the FW de Klerk Foundation’s Constitutional Rights Programme because of its focus on the intersection of law, rights, policy and implementation. Understanding how constitutional principles are upheld and applied in practice is crucial to my legal aspirations. This internship presents an opportunity to engage with critical legal issues while contributing to meaningful discourse on human rights and governance.
FWDKF: What do you hope to achieve/learn during the internship?
SN: I hope to deepen my understanding of constitutional law and its practical application in policy and governance. Through research and legal analysis, I aim to enhance my ability to critically assess constitutional challenges and contribute to discussions on rights protections. Additionally, I look forward to developing my advocacy and policy research skills.
FWDKF: What is your background, country of origin, and research focus?
SN: I have a diverse heritage—my father is Zambian and my mother is South African-Coloured, making me a blend of two distinct cultures and national identities. Although my roots extend beyond South Africa, I was born and raised here and I hold a deep passion for this country and its culture. My research interests focus on governance, women and children and economics.
FWDKF: What are your career ambitions?
SN: My immediate goal is to qualify and be admitted as an attorney within the next three years. Beyond that, I aspire to work in the legal sector of government or parliament, where I can contribute to legislative development, constitutional interpretation and policy reform.
