Minister may benefit from Lesotho’s R100-billion AI and hydropower deal

Public works minister Matjato Moteane is a shareholder in a local firm the government plans to invite to participate

Lesotho has signed a US$6.2-billion agreement with US-based Convalt Energy to build a hydropower plant and AI data centre.
Sekhametsi Investment Consortium is among the local firms the energy minister has named as potential local partners in the project.
Public Works Minister Matjato Moteane, who has faced previous allegations of conflict of interest, is a shareholder in Sekhametsi Investment Consortium.
Moteane says he will recuse himself from cabinet discussions about the Kobong Project.
