Residents of Mogale City Local Municipality (Krugersdorp, Magaliesburg, Muldersdrift) were in for a shock this week when they received excessively high utility bills.

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) has been inundated with calls about the matter and, upon further investigation, found that residents of Kenmare and Silverfields had their bills calculated over 38 days, while water and electricity consumption readings in Noordheuwel were taken over a 48-day period.

Meter readings should be based on a 30-day period.

The block tariff system for electricity consumption, which remains in effect until the end of the financial year, pushes consumers into a higher tariff bracket if readings are not taken and processed within 30 days.

The party will insist, during the upcoming joint portfolio committee meeting of the municipal Departments of Finance and Utility Services, that the matter be investigated.

The Mogale City Municipality is abusing the system to the detriment of residents.

The party also demands that accounts be corrected.

This is a typical example of the kind of maladministration that characterises this ANC-controlled Municipality, which is putting more pressure on residents who are already struggling to keep their heads above water in the current economic circumstances.

This is unacceptable. Residents must ensure that they are registered to vote on 4 November for the Freedom Front Plus — the party that puts residents first.

Freedom Front Plus Advocacy: The FF Plus advocates for the protection of minority rights in South Africa.

Now Now – immediately / soon. A confusing phrase for non-locals meaning sometime soon – sooner than just now but quicker than right now.Example: “We’re going to the beach now now!” (But first we have to pack our swimming gear, stop at gas station and maybe get some snacks…).
