Morning Walks in Natural Space Offer Many Benefits for Retirees

Active ageing is a growing trend, whereby retirees prioritise their health through sports and recreational activities that keep them moving. On the KZN Mid-South Coast, walking is an increasingly popular group activity with retirees taking advantage of the region’s natural assets for physical fitness, mental clarity, and stress relief.

“We’ve seen a significant rise in walking groups among the retired community as it’s widely regarded as one of the simplest and most effective forms of exercise – made even more beneficial when enjoyed with friends in natural surroundings,” says Barto van der Merwe, Managing Director of Renishaw Property Developments, a subsidiary of Crookes Brothers Limited.

“The subtropical climate, access to nature trails, and proximity to the ocean make this region ideal for walking year-round. What’s particularly special is the social aspect, with residents often walking in clubs, stopping for coffee, and turning a simple fitness routine into a meaningful community experience.”

Why Nature Walking is Ideal for Seniors

For retirees, walking in nature offers a wide range of health benefits that go far beyond basic exercise. Unlike more strenuous forms of exercise, walking is accessible and adaptable for different abilities, making it ideal for maintaining long-term health and independence.

Benefits include:

  • Improved cardiovascular health through regular, low-impact movement
  • Enhanced mobility, balance, and coordination, reducing the risk of falls
  • Reduced stress and improved mood, thanks to time spent in green spaces
  • Better sleep and immune function, linked to outdoor activity
  • Sharper cognitive function and concentration, supported by nature exposure
  • Increased social interaction, helping to combat isolation

A Thriving Walking Community in Scottburgh

At the heart of this movement is the vibrant Renishaw Hills Walkers, a group from Scottburgh which has evolved organically over the past eight years. Today, there are four established walking groups, alongside numerous independent walkers, with close to 50 residents taking to the trails in any given week.

According to resident Les Barker, the variety of walking options ensures there is something for everyone:

  • Road Walkers meet twice weekly for brisk, fitness-focused walks along tarred roads.
  • Trail Walkers explore the estate three times a week, navigating farm roads, sugarcane contours, and forest MTB trails.
  • Wednesday and Saturday Strollers enjoy shorter, more relaxed walks, often followed by coffee at the community centre or local cafés.

“Walking along these routes is both invigorating and calming,” says Barker. “You’re surrounded by nature, whether it’s the sound of birds like kingfishers and green wood-hoopoes, or spotting a baby Crowned Eagle in its nest. The sunrise over the ocean, the fresh air, and the ever-changing scenery make every walk unique.”

Renishaw Hills offers an extensive network of walking routes that blend inland beauty with coastal access.

Barker says that some of the popular trails include:

  • The River Trail: Winding alongside the Mpambanyoni River with scenic crossings and lush vegetation.
  • Mamba Alley: A favourite forest route that leads all the way to Scottburgh Main Beach.
  • The Zig-Zag Trail: Near a waterfall, offering shaded pathways through indigenous coastal forest.
  • Mineshaft Viewpoint: Rewarding walkers with panoramic views over rivers, wetlands, and the Indian Ocean.

Many of these walks naturally extend to the coastline, with residents often heading to the beach for a sunrise break or a takeaway coffee before returning home. Regular social stops – whether at local cafés or impromptu gatherings – add to the sense of community, with walkers celebrating birthdays, seasonal events, and even decorating a roadside Christmas tree together.

The walking community also extends beyond the estate, with Renishaw Hills residents occasionally joining groups like the Widdies Trailblazers for longer, organised Saturday walks. These excursions cover scenic routes such as the Umkomaas Beach to Scottburgh route, coastal farmland trails, and forest reserves like Crocworld Conservation Centre and Umdoni.

“The popularity of walking at Renishaw Hills reflects a broader shift towards active, engaged retirement living,” concludes van der Merwe. “It’s about staying fit while connecting with nature, building friendships, and enjoying a balanced lifestyle. This is very much at the heart of Renishaw Hills, where nature-based activities and social clubs make all the difference to your lifestyle.”
