The City’s Community, Arts and Culture Development Department, along with the Cape Town Opera Chorus, concluded four concerts which brought the dramatic art and beauty of opera to communities. Residents in Gugulethu, Woodstock, Pinelands and Kuils River were treated to the concerts during June and July.
‘We have audiences in under resourced areas who may not get the opportunity to attend live concerts that feature classical, spiritual, and operatic performances. Opera In Your Neighbourhood takes the experience of opera out of the traditional theatre space and makes it easily accessible and available to audiences right where they are. They are exposed to this breathtaking art form, while the CTO reaches new and diverse audiences. It is a winning recipe for all involved,’ said the Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham.
The concerts were structured 45-minute performances and the CTO Chorus’ repertoire included traditional African spirituals and operatic music.
‘The concerts are warmly welcomed by the community as they bring people together and create a positive, uplifting atmosphere. These events also add value by promoting cultural appreciation, supporting local talent, and providing entertainment that is accessible to all. Through music, the Chorus engages the audience which fosters a sense of connection and joy that strengthens community spirit and encourages continued participation in the arts.
‘The City is proud to support this initiative and these concerts are offered at no cost. The community concerts bring happiness and inspiration to audiences across Cape Town, resonating deeply with attendees of all ages and proving to be highly successful. Given the overwhelmingly positive reception, it is crucial to expand this initiative to additional communities, enabling broader access to performing arts,’ added Councillor Higham.
‘The CTO Chorus presented free community concerts in Gugulethu, Woodstock, Pinelands and Kuils River in City of Cape Town venues. All concerts were received with great enthusiasm, eliciting many heartfelt comments, tears of joy, and wonderful engagement with the music from audience members. The audience loved being so close to opera singers and were very moved by the diverse musical offering,’ said CTO Chorus Master, Antoinette Huyssen.
More concerts are planned and residents are asked to keep an eye on community noticeboards.
