The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus), which has taken the lead in criticising the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill since it was tabled to Parliament in 2019, believes that the nine court cases currently under way against the legislation should proceed at all costs.
Negotiations and dialogue on the matter per se are good; and although the Freedom Front Plus cannot dictate to litigants, constant pressure and opposition from all sides is crucial to stop the proposed law.
As the pressure mounts, the ANC’s resistance will crumble – this is likely the reason behind the ANC’s sudden willingness to negotiate.
The only way to resolve the controversy surrounding the NHI is to scrap the legislation in its entirety. Government has to go back to the drawing board, involve professional medical experts from both the private and public sector, and start from scratch to draft a system that will benefit everyone.
Such a model should be pragmatic, sober and fact-based – not, like the NHI, dreamed up out of thin air by ANC politicians.
The negotiations proposed by the Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana, with opponents of the NHI, who have turned to the courts, cannot centre on a half-baked NHI “potato”, though.
Instead, the focus should be on how to go about removing the NHI legislation from the statute book, and what can be done to bring medical experts around one table to draft a workable healthcare system for South Africa.
The Freedom Front Plus is and remains opposed to a nationalisation system, such as the NHI. During the 2024/25 and 2025/26 budgets in Parliament, the Freedom Front Plus made it clear that it will never endorse the NHI.
The party’s constant opposition and public statements against the NHI over the course of the past six years speak for themselves.
It is time for President Cyril Ramaphosa and the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, to accept the fact that the NHI is nothing more than a stillborn dream.
The poor healthcare currently provided to South Africans is making the country itself sick.
As long as the public healthcare system remains sick and infected with ANC ideology, a healthy South Africa is simply impossible. Without a healthy system, the country will remain dysfunctional.
