One of Scotland’s most promising young prospects has put pen to paper on a first professional contract with Glasgow Warriors, after Jare Oguntibeju pledged his future to the Scotstoun outfit.
The 22-year-old has been one of the club’s breakout performers in 2024/25 to date, impressing in his four outings in Glasgow colours so far this campaign.
Having originally joined the club’s senior academy in the summer of 2024, the former Scotland U20 starlet made his professional debut that November, playing 75 minutes in a 17-15 victory over Scarlets at Scotstoun.
His first try for the Warriors came just a fortnight later, showing his dynamic ball-carrying to full effect by crashing over from close-range away to Toulon in the Investec Champions Cup.
Born in South Africa, the 6’8” second-rower spent his formative years in Edinburgh, before returning to South Africa and catching the eye with his school, Meridian Pinehurst.
A spell with Ealing Trailfinders preceded a stint with Stirling Wolves in the FOSROC Super Series, before linking up with Franco Smith’s squad last summer.
Oguntibeju was also part of the Scotland A squad that claimed victory over Chile in Edinburgh last November, coming off the bench for the final 10 minutes in a 19-17 win over Los Condores.
“I’m very grateful for the chance,” Oguntibeju told glasgowwarriors.org following the announcement.
“I didn’t expect it all to happen so soon after arriving, but I’m really proud to have the chance to represent this club. I’ve really enjoyed it – I didn’t expect to play as much as I have, but I’ve been blessed with the opportunity and Franco and the coaches have shown great trust in me this season so far.
“Positionally, all the second-rowers have been huge for me, whether that’s someone like Scott [Cummings] with my defence or Max [Williamson] with lineout detail. Guys like Henco [Venter], the Fagersons, the whole pack, too – it’s like a real family group.
“I’ve already accomplished more than I’d hoped for this season, so I just want to play as much as I can for the rest of the season now. I want to work my way into the team and solidify my place, and whatever comes after that is a bonus.”
Head Coach Smith added: “Jare is a player who we believe has true potential, and who has seized his opportunity with both hands this season.
“He is someone who is always eager to improve and willing to learn from those around him, as he strives to be the best version of himself.
“We’re looking forward to working with him to continue his development and are excited to see him grow as both a person and a player while at Glasgow Warriors.”
