President Cyril Ramaphosa announced today that he dismissed Sisisi Tolashe, Minister of Social Development.

The pressure on Tolashe, who is also president of the ANC Women’s League, has mounted in recent weeks due to a series of serious allegations of irregularities.

Among those is the improper use of vehicles donated by the Chinese Embassy, which eventually went to her family, and the alleged employment of a state official as a private caregiver with unauthorised salary deductions paid to Minister Tolashe’s daughter.

There were also irregular appointments in her Department and an overreach of authority when she took action regarding the Department’s Director-General, Mr Peter Netshipale, without the President’s permission.

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) had intended to directly confront the President during question time in the National Assembly (NA) today about his delay in taking action against Minister Tolashe.

The President has now finally yielded to growing public and political pressure. The Freedom Front Plus welcomes the decision, but will keep demanding that the full report and findings that led to the dismissal be disclosed to the public.

The people of South Africa have the right to know exactly what was going on in the Department of Social Development.
