The hit on the prime suspect in the Murray murders investigation is not an isolated incident. Daily assassinations, a captured police service, a prosecuting authority in disarray and the rise of a mafia state are all the byproducts of a criminal justice system in tatters. This comes as no surprise, as the ANC has spent decades destroying the rule of law in South Africa to protect its cadres.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) demands that Ministers of Justice, Correctional Services, Police, and State Security account for their departments’ joint failures in curbing the rise of impunity and present a combined plan to save the South African criminal justice system. We afford these Ministers until 31 October to present a plan that will address these failures and protect the rule of law.
The ultimate victims of ANC-sponsored destruction of the rule of law are the ordinary South African citizens, who suffer the scourge of crime daily. The DA doesn’t act in its own interests, but in the interest of its voters, and we will therefore not allow these Ministers to pass the buck for the umpteenth time.
Should these Ministers fail to come up with a tangible action plan by 31 October, the DA will write to the President and urge him to address these ministers’ inaction in protecting the criminal justice system.
We are a party that supports the rule of law and will not allow South Africa to become a mafia state. The criminal justice system can be fixed, but political will is crucial in finding a solution. South Africa has shown in the past that it can come back from the brink through collaboration, and we must find a way to do this once more.
The Ministers of Justice, Police, Corrections and State Security are tasked with upholding the rule of law and should therefore be leading the charge fighting crime on all levels.
