The City of Cape Town Energy Directorate’s R1,7 million electrification project in Gugulethu’s Khikhi informal settlement is scheduled for completion by the end of June 2025 and will bring 193 new electricity connections to homes in the community. The project forms part of the City’s commitment to investment in communities and expanding service delivery to residents.
The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Alderman Xanthea Limberg, conducted a site visit to the area where work is progressing on the critical project which will benefit nearly 200 households.
‘This important community project will not only provide safe and reliable electricity supply to the beneficiaries and their families, but the residents will now also qualify for the City’s Free Basic Electricity (FBE) available on the subsidised Lifeline tariff, which supports households with an additional amount of electricity at no extra cost.
‘As part of the Khikhi electrification project, more than 20 local workers were employed, helping to create job opportunities and support livelihoods within the community.
‘During our visit, we met with two beneficiary families who shared their excitement with us. For the first time, their homes have electricity supply and children and university students can study after dark. The City’s electrification projects are examples of our commitment to investing in communities, with a strong focus on improving informal areas and providing services.
‘This project is more than the infrastructure; it is about assisting families who need it most and about providing opportunities for the residents in the area. Having electricity during the colder winter months is also critical, and we are glad that our project is making excellent progress.
‘The City continues with its infrastructure upgrade and maintenance programme, as well as electrification projects across the city and we thank all beneficiaries, the community and all stakeholders for their support during the project’s roll out,’ said Alderman Limberg.

The husband turns to his wife and says louder \”the cab driver asked us where we were from, I told him South Africa!\”
The cabbie continues \”I was in the merchant navy years back… I got to drop anchor down your way, a few times in Johannesburg\”
The husband replies \”oh wow that\’s where we\’re from originally, now we\’re in Cape Town.\”
The wife asks the husband again \”what did he say?\”.
The husband again relays the unheard conversation \”the cab driver says he spent some time in the navy and went down to joberg\”.
The wife smiles and nods.
