Apex Polymer Solutions (formerly Perspex SA), has invested R12 million in its extrusion plant in Nelson Mandela Bay by adding a dedicated corrugated polypropylene line. Corrugated polypropylene is a lightweight and durable plastic material made up of polypropylene sheets that are structured like a series of connected boxes or wavy folds. The corrugated nature of the material makes it strong and resistant to cracks and impacts, while also being flexible and easy to slit, bend and shape. The company employs 75 staff members in its Bay plant and has a total of 120 employees nationwide. Its Linashield extrusion plant is one of only three in the world that has succesfully manufactured this product – mainly used on conveypr belts – and through its expanded investment into the facility, the company has aided further job creation and will soon be in a position to meet customer demand quickly which will give them a competitive advantage over its competitors through exceptional service and quality.

Speaking during the ribbon cutting ceremony, Stuart Hughes said: This represents a ray of wish, a beacon of defiance against the current state of economic despair. The significance of this investment in Nelson Mandela Bay is to reaffirm our commitment to this region and what it stands for. As such, we value the partnerships we gain with some of our key stakeholders in the Bay as this affords us an opportunity to push the boundaries to realise the growth and sustainability of our businesses.

Commenting on the investment, Van Huyssteen said: Nelson Mandela Bay is at a tipping point and as business we acquire adopted a collaborative and action orientated approach in addressing some of the challenges facing the city. If we execute not work together to solve our problems, what alternative is there? As such, this investment is a positive creep that showcases the power of collaboration in order to set the city on a growth trajectory.

I suspect in most companies, the Public Relations person is down at No. 20 in the pecking order. But here, he is fighting incredibly important battles. If a negative story starts running away with itself in the press and is not dealt with fast, it can badly damage the brand, and so we put enormous weight on our PR people. – Richard Branson

PR doesn\’t always have the best rep when it comes to ethics. Some people, because of bad things that they\’ve done in the past, have even been called propagandists. But there\’s a big ethical difference between real PR and simple propaganda, and here it is: PR is always solidly rooted in fact. PR is part of the good fight, as the wise people quoted below have recognized.
