R276 000 of Dagga Seized

KIMBERLEY – The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Upington has intensified efforts to combat the illicit drug trade, resulting in the arrest of two men in separate incidents on Thursday, 17 September 2026.

Dagga with an estimated combined street value of more than R276 000 was seized during the operations.

Both suspects were arrested and charged with dealing in drugs and are expected to appear in the Upington Magistrates’ Court soon.

In the first incident, at approximately 08:30, police members, acting on intelligence-driven information, intercepted a vehicle along Swartmodder Road in Upington.

A 55-year-old man was allegedly found in possession of dagga with an estimated street value of R246 500-00.

The vehicle allegedly used in the commission of the offence was also seized for further investigation.

In a separate incident at approximately 12:55, police received information regarding a foreign national who was allegedly selling dagga in the Upington Central Business District.

Members responded swiftly and allegedly found the suspect openly selling dagga on the streets of Upington. A search reportedly resulted in the seizure of dagga with an estimated street value of R30 000-00, as well as a small scale believed to have been used in the weighing of the drugs.

The suspect was immediately arrested and charged with dealing in drugs. A further charge relating to a possible contravention of the Immigration Act may be added, subject to the outcome of the investigation.

The ZF Mgcawu Management commended the members involved for their swift response and intelligence-driven policing, which resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of illicit drugs and the arrest of the alleged perpetrators.

The police reiterates that SAPS will continue to disrupt the illicit drug trade through intelligence-led operations, targeted interventions and partnerships with other law enforcement agencies and stakeholders.

The Northern Cape SAPS remains committed to implementing the SAPS Reset Agenda, with a continued focus on strengthening policing, disrupting criminal activities and ensuring that those who engage in criminality are brought before the courts.
