Rather Focus on Buffalo City Residents’ Road Concerns, MEC

29 May 2025 by Guest

Dear Editor

The Democratic Alliance (DA) condemns the recent media statement issued by Eastern Cape MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Xolile Nqatha, regarding the state of Buffalo Pass Road in the Buffalo City Metro.

The MEC’s attempt to deflect legitimate public concern as “political grandstanding” is not only dismissive but deeply disrespectful to the residents who endure daily hardship due to the deteriorating condition of this critical road.

Contrary to the MEC’s insinuations that the DA petition campaign to fix the road is about electioneering, it is not about politics—it is about accountability. It is about amplifying the voices of residents who have waited far too long for safe and reliable road infrastructure.

The state of the Buffalo Pass Road has long been a pressing issue. If MEC Nqatha and his department were serious about addressing it, action would have been taken years ago and not after public pressure has started to mount.

We welcome the announcement of a planned refurbishment in collaboration with SANRAL, but words must now be matched with visible, measurable progress. The public deserves more than vague assurances. They deserve timelines, transparency, and results.

The DA will continue to stand with the people of the Buffalo City Metro. We make no apologies for fighting for service delivery and holding government to account. It is not electioneering, it is our duty.

Regards

Leander Kruger MPL
DA Buffalo City Constituency Leader
