Record numbers of men, women, and children from all walks of life and backgrounds united for the annual Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer presented by Isuzu Motors South Africa on Saturday, October 31.
Thousands walked side by side, each step a tribute to someone cherished, a life loved, a battle fought.
While the Big Walk set attendance records in Gqeberha, George, and Buffalo City, the event is about so much more than numbers.
This was a heartfelt display of unity, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to fighting cancer.
The true spirit of the day lay in the dedication of thousands who walked with their loved ones’ names emblazoned on banners, T-shirts, and most importantly, held close in their hearts, says Algoa FM managing director Alfie Jay.
The 28th edition has positioned the Big Walk as one of the country’s top mass-participation fundraising events, with a total of 22 700 participants across the three centres, plus virtual participants throughout South Africa and abroad, he says.
Since 2022, Algoa FM has also hosted Big Walk start points in Buffalo City and George, both of which attracted record entries in 2026.
There was a 30% year-on-year growth in the number of walkers in George and 20% in Buffalo City.
“What I always find inspiring about the Big Walk, now in its 28th year, is that the people of Algoa Country are united and connected behind a common cause,” says Jay.
“Political and other differences are simply set aside as we connect as people, with a common objective – to support those affected by cancer,” he adds.
“Thousands of people with thousands of stories walked together with one purpose,” adds Isuzu Motors South Africa senior manager, corporate communications, Sharné Woods.
“We may be walking for different people, but we walk with one heart. And that is what connected truly means,” she adds.
The 2026 beneficiaries are the Prostate Foundation of South Africa and CHOC, the Childhood Cancer Foundation in the Eastern Cape.
As a result of the focus on prostate cancer, there was a record entry by men in 2026, according to Jay.
Funds raised by the Big Walk will go towards purchasing essential prostate diagnostic equipment for Frere Hospital in Buffalo City, Provincial Hospital in Nelson Mandela Bay, and the George Hospital, and towards a twin cab for CHOC.
