Statement by Horatio Hendricks MPL – DA Shadow MEC for Education:
Children must never be used as political tools, and schools must remain safe, neutral spaces dedicated to learning. As South Africa enters another election period, it is deeply concerning that school premises are increasingly being misused for political campaigning, placing learners directly in the path of partisan activity.
This conduct undermines the integrity of our education system and exposes children to political pressure in environments meant to protect their development and well-being. Parents entrust schools with the care of their children, not with exposing them to political messaging during teaching time.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has noted several instances recently where political parties have attended school activities in party regalia, and I have subsequently written to the Eastern Cape Education MEC, Fundile Gade, and the Head of Department, Sharon Maasdorp, requesting that an urgent circular be issued to all school principals, reminding them of their legal obligations and the explicit prohibition on political activity on school premises during teaching and learning hours.
Section 33A of the South African Schools Act is clear. Political activity on school grounds during school hours is not permitted. Any breach of this provision directly compromises learner welfare and erodes public confidence in the neutrality of our education system.
We note with concern that certain political parties continue to disregard this law. If a departmental circular is not issued, or if compliance is not actively monitored, the DA will escalate this matter to the national Minister of Basic Education to ensure learners are protected from political interference.
No political party is above the law. Schools are not campaign venues, and children are not campaign props. Every learner has the right to an education environment free from political pressure, disruption, or exploitation.
The DA remains committed to safeguarding the neutrality of schools and ensuring that every child can learn in a safe, professional, and politically neutral environment.
