A shack was blown several metres in the storm in Mushongo Ville in Musina, Limpopo.
Eunice Maunze was inside her food stall on Monday afternoon in Musina, Limpopo, when a storm blew the roof off.
She grabbed her one-year-old child and ran to safety at a neighbour’s place. The zinc sheets of her stall were blown several metres away. When GroundUp visited on Tuesday, Maunze had collected the sheets and was putting them together to use again.
“Today, I am not sure if my customers will come,” she said.
Several houses, a church and schools were damaged when violent storms hit Musina and other parts of Limpopo on Monday afternoon.
A shack in Mushongo Ville was blown away and is now hanging on a nearby shrub.
The Everlasting Church in Mushongo Ville, which used to accommodate a congregation of 40, was also blown down. No one was inside during the incident.
“We are demolishing everything to prepare for rebuilding the church,” Kumucho Sithole told GroundUp. To rebuild, they need more than 30 wooden poles, 50 zinc sheets, and nails.
The Everlasting Church in Mushongo Ville was destroyed by the wind.
The roofs of the classrooms at Bonwa Udi Primary School blew off. Learners had already left for the day, and no one was injured. The School Governing Body is still assessing the extent of the damage.
On Tuesday, the learners had been sent home as there was no electricity or water at the school.
The Limpopo Department of Education said it was identifying affected schools in Vhembe, Mopani and Sekhukhune municipalities to implement measures to prevent disruptions to exams.
Wilson Dzebu, Musina municipality spokesperson, told GroundUp that the disaster management team was still busy assessing the damages.
