Shoddy “Repairs” After Germiston Cable Theft Endangers Residents

The shoddy manner in which the Ekurhuleni Metro repaired a damaged power cable in Helder Road, Germiston, is life-threatening and unacceptable.

After vandals cut an electricity supply cable during an attempted theft, the power supply was restored using methods that appear to disregard all safety protocols.

The damaged cable appears to have been fixed using insulation tape, creating a temporary and unsafe connection that falls far short of acceptable safety standards.

This type of “repair work” poses a serious risk of electrical faults, fire hazards and possible injuries to residents, and can in no way be regarded as a sustainable or adequate solution.

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) will raise the matter in the Council and demand that a qualified team return to the site to properly and safely repair the cable as soon as possible.

Technicians employed by the Ekurhuleni Metro Council and private contractors must adhere to much higher standards of workmanship than demonstrated here.
