Sodwana Bay: Man Missing

Melinda Snyman, NSRI St Lucia station commander, said: At 18h28, Tuesday, 6 January, NSRI St Lucia were alerted by Ezemvelo Wildlife authorities, at Sodwana Bay, of a drowning in progress at Sodwana Bay main beach.

iSimangilso lifeguards, who had already gone off normal scheduled duty, responded back to Sodwana Bay main beach and initiated a search for a missing man.

NSRI St Lucia off duty NSRI members, who happened to be in the area at the time, engaged in recreational scuba-diving activities, responded and joined iSimangaliso lifeguards who had launched a search operation in the surf zone for a local 23 year old male who had gone missing in the water after it appears he may have been caught in rip currents while swimming.

KwaZulu-Natal Ezemvelo Wildlife rangers launched their vessel to assist in search efforts.

Despite extensive coordinated sea and shoreline search efforts by iSimangaliso lifeguards, NSRI St Lucia crew, and Ezemvelo Wildlife rangers, there remains no signs of the missing man.

The SA Police Services were alerted and Police Search and Rescue, assisted by iSimangaliso lifeguards and KZN Ezemvelo Wildlife rangers, are continuing in ongoing search efforts.

Thoughts and care are with the family and friends of the missing man in this difficult time.
