New annual report documents a 60% surge in data breaches and warns of AI-powered cyberattacks threatening South African businesses at unprecedented scale.

BLOEMFONTEIN, SOUTH AFRICA — Tanosec, a leading South African cybersecurity firm, today released its 2026 Annual Threat Intelligence Report, confirming that South Africa has become the most targeted economy on the African continent. Attackers are increasingly leveraging artificial intelligence to exploit vulnerabilities at machine speed.

Compiled from six months of live threat intelligence data, the report identifies three critical risk areas facing South African organisations:

  1. The Identity Crisis: 54% of breaches involve compromised identities. Multi-factor authentication alone is no longer a sufficient defence.
  2. The Peripheral Blindspot: 38% of breaches originate from peripheral and IoT devices — printers, routers, and point-of-sale systems — that are routinely overlooked in security audits.
  3. The AI Surge: Cybercriminals are now deploying autonomous AI-driven reconnaissance and machine-speed exploitation as standard tools, outpacing most organisations’ ability to respond.

“The data tells a clear story: South Africa is no longer a peripheral target — it is the target. Organisations that continue to treat cybersecurity as an afterthought will face severe consequences in 2026. This report exists to equip business leaders with the intelligence they need to act.” — Lawrence Lackey, Tanosec

The 2026 Annual Threat Intelligence Report is available to download at https://tanosec.short.gy/DhFhr2.
