Southbroom: Body Recovered

The body of a man, believed to be that of a 22 year old man who went missing in the surf at Southbroom on Thursday, has been located and recovered on Monday by Police divers, assisted by NSRI Shelly Beach.

At 13h32, Monday, 19 May, NSRI Shelly Beach duty crew were activated following eyewitness reports of a body seen floating in the surf zone offshore of Southbroom Main Beach.

A search by Police divers, for the missing Durban man, assisted by Police K9 Search and Rescue, NSRI Shelly Beach and NSRI Port Edward, has been ongoing since Thursday last week.

The SA Police Services were alerted and Police Search and Rescue (WPDS – Water Policing and Diving Services) and a Shelly Beach Police Station patrol vehicle responded.

The NSRI Shelly Beach rescue craft Spirit of Dawn, accompanied by Police divers, was launched.

NSRI Port Edward duty crew were alerted and the NSRI Port Edward crew responded to assist with on-scene visuals from the shore side.

Government Health Forensic Pathology Services and Med-Evac ambulance services were activated.

On arrival on the scene (offshore of Southbroom Main Beach, in the surf zone) the body of an adult man was located and recovered from the water by Police divers, assisted by NSRI, and recovered onboard the NSRI rescue craft.

The body of the deceased man was brought to the NSRI Shelly Beach station 20 rescue base onboard the NSRI rescue craft.

The body of the man has been taken into the care of Government Health Forensic Pathology Services and Police.

Family of the 22 year old man (who went missing on Thursday in the surf zone) attended at the NSRI rescue base in the care of NSRI, Police and Forensics authorities.

Formal identification of the man is being arranged with family in accordance with formal protocols.

An Inquest docket has been opened by Police.

Condolences are conveyed to family, friends and colleagues, of the deceased man.
