Johannesburg, South Africa: St. George’s University (SGU) School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies, has opened applications for its January 2027 intake, including the new 5-Year Doctor of Medicine (MD) track at Northumbria University (NU). The January start gives eligible students from Africa and worldwide the option to take a break after high school and begin their medical education at NU in January rather than waiting for the usual Fall intake.

The new MD track directly addresses the evolving needs of prospective medical students and their families. For students completing A-levels or the International Baccalaureate in August, the January intake offers a short break for travel, internships, or rest before beginning medical studies. It also provides more time to arrange visas ahead of enrollment.

“We recognize that students and parents are increasingly seeking greater flexibility in entry routes and intake timelines,” said Johannes Kraus, Regional Director Africa, International Student Recruitment, at SGU. “The new January 5-Year MD track intake through Northumbria University responds directly to this demand. It creates another viable option for eligible students who want greater control over when they begin their journey, ensuring they don’t have to put their ambitions on hold for an entire year.”

Alongside the new January intake, SGU is offering a range of scholarship opportunities to support eligible international students. Awards of US$80,000 are available, with applicants assessed on factors including academic performance, personal achievements and their commitment to pursuing a career in medicine. Students demonstrating exceptional potential, including relevant healthcare experience or community involvement, may also be considered for additional scholarship support following an individual assessment.

As part of its continued commitment to supporting aspiring medical students in Africa, SGU is strengthening its relationships with international schools, educational counsellors and families. Through school visits, information sessions and personalised guidance, the university aims to help students better understand the different routes into medicine, scholarship opportunities and potential international medical careers.

SGU’s commitment to student success extends beyond flexible entry points. The university offers a comprehensive onboarding process, including dedicated international student support teams, country-specific peer support, and campus orientation programs to ensure a smooth transition.

SGU also addresses the growing focus on graduate outcomes by offering a robust clinical training network. Students benefit from clinical rotations across a network of over 75 affiliated hospitals and healthcare systems in the US and UK.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year with over 26,000 School of Medicine graduates practicing across all 50 US states and in more than 50 countries worldwide1, SGU remains the largest source of physicians for the US workforce2, consistently placing hundreds of graduates into US residencies each year.

Media clips used to require actual clipping. To see if PR efforts paid off, a company hired women in Maine to read through every single newspaper. Every time they found mention of a client, they underlined it with red wax pencil and were paid around two cents. PR pros would paste these clips into a “clip book” and show it to each client.
