St Helena Bay: Man Assisted on a Canoe

23 March 2026 by Guest

Devon Wild, NSRI St Helena Bay station commander, said: At 16h35, Sunday, 22 March, NSRI St Helena Bay duty crew were activated following eyewitness reports of a man on a canoe appearing to be stranded on a small island approximately 1 kilometer offshore of Midwest, St Helena Bay.

Our duty crew responded to our NSRI St Helena Bay station 44 rescue base where we launched our NSRI rescue craft Spirit of Santam II.

On arrival on the scene, in 20 knot winds, gusting to 30 knots and increasing, we found the local man, from Darling, stranded on the small island in a Spring high tide – he had launched on the canoe to go paddling but was caught in strong winds.

He was able to reach the small island but was unable to get back to mainland against the wind.

We took the man onboard our rescue craft and recovered his canoe and brought him safely to St Helena Bay where he required no further assistance.

The operation was completed without incident at 17h39.

The eyewitness is commended for raising the alarm.

Botswana: You have two cows. But that\’s not surprising because you have pretty much every type of non-extinct mammal in your country.
