SAPS to host a series of activities in the build up to National Police Day

The South African Police Service (SAPS) will from Friday host a series of activities and events in the build up to National Police Day, which is scheduled to take place next week Monday.

In 2005, Cabinet approved 27 January as National Police Day. On National Police Day, SAPS remembers the sacrifices that the country’s men and women in blue have made and continue to make as they provide safety for all who live in South Africa.

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and the Deputy Ministers of Police, Cassel Mathale and Polly Boshielo will, together with the National Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, lead a delegation of senior leadership and members of the service in celebration of the build-up activities that will take place as follows:

SAPS National Golf Day

The SAPS National Golf Day is an event meant to raise funds towards the SAPS Education Trust Fund (SAPSET). 

SAPSET is responsible for the educational needs of those children whose fathers and mothers died in the line of duty. 

To date, more than 1 000 children have been assisted, with 18 recently obtaining a matric pass with a combined 17 distinctions.

National Excellence Awards

The National Excellence Awards is an event aimed at recognising and rewarding outstanding performance, exceptional devotion to community relations and extraordinary courage within the South African Police Service. 

The awards ceremony boasts more than 30 categories, including the National Commissioner’s Awards and the Ministry Awards.

Date: Sunday, 26 January 2025

Time: 18:00

Venue: Durban International Conference Centre (ICC).

National Police Day

Cabinet has set aside this day to allow SAPS management to reflect and take stock on progress made in the previous year to prevent, combat and investigate crime. 

On this day, management also appreciates serving members, as well as pays homage to those members who died in the line of duty.

Call to enter SADC Media Awards competition

Call to enter SADC Media Awards competition

South African journalists are invited to submit their entries for the 2025 Southern African Development Community (SADC) Media Awards competition before the deadline next month.

The competition is open to journalists from the SADC Member States. 

“The SADC Media Awards were established in 1996 to recognise best media work in disseminating information on SADC to support the process of regional co-operation and integration in the region. 

“To promote regional integration and cooperation (cross-border issues), the awards aim to recognise excellence in journalism in the area of print, photo, television, radio as well as to encourage media practitioners in member states to cover issues pertaining to the region,” the Government Communications (GCIS) said on Tuesday.

The first prize winners will receive their prizes and certificates on the margins of the SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government that will take place in August 2025.

The first prize winner in each category receives US$2,500 and the runner-up receives US$1000.

Journalists who wish to enter the competition can access more information about the competition from the www.gcis.gov.za website.

Celebrating 30 years of policing in a democratic SA

Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) work under the most daunting working environments as the country struggles with high rates of violent crime, including homicide and sexual assault.

When police officers leave their families every day to perform their duties, the brave men and women in blue are putting their lives on the line and risk returning home in a coffin.

Through the commemoration of National Police Day, which takes place annually on 27 January, government recognises the hard work and sacrifices that the country’s police officers make and continue to make to provide a safe South Africa for all.

Speaking to SAnews, KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla MKhwanazi, said this year’s celebrations coincides with 30 years of policing in a democratic South Africa.

“We know that in 1995 there was an amalgamation of different policing agencies that we had in the country that established the SAPS…[now] we are all one in policing in the country as mandated by the Constitution of the Republic,” MKhwanazi said. 

When South Africa attained independence in 1994, the new democratic order brought about many changes and had a substantial impact on policing.

Last year, South Africa celebrated the 30th anniversary of the country’s democratic dispensation and commemorated the nation’s first democratic election on 27 April 1994.

This historic milestone coincided with the 28th anniversary of the enactment of the South African Constitution as the supreme law of the land.

“We are going to be celebrating 30 years of policing in a democratic South Africa. We will be displaying all our capabilities as the SAPS. The National Police Day is one of the activities on the SAPS calendar that has been gazetted by government and authorised for us to have a celebration.

“This year’s event will be celebrated in KwaZulu-Natal, specifically in eThekwini. We want to give confidence that Durban remains a place of interest for hosting big events,” the provincial police commissioner said.

Since its establishment in April 2024, the Presidential eThekwini Working Group (PeWG) has been working hard to address critical service delivery, infrastructure, and socio-economic challenges within the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality with the goal of positioning the city as an investment and tourism hub.

The Working Group operates across three spheres of government and includes representatives from the private sector and labour.

Call for donations for the SAPS education trust fund

Prior to National Police Day, the SAPS will host a fundraising event, which will be in the form of a golf day on 25 January 2025.

The SAPS has established the South African Police Service Education Trust (SAPSET) to raise funds for the provisioning of financial or any other form of assistance to a child or children of members in the service that died in the execution of official duties or on duty, by financing the costs of such child’s or children’s educational needs.

“This allows us to assist these children to go through school until the obtain their first tertiary qualification to make life better for them because those men and women would have died saving society and therefore their children should not be forgotten.

“Of course, government will pay their insurance, but on top of that, we felt that it is important that we find a way of augmenting the resources they have in order to be able to go to school without any struggles.

“We are doing the fundraising and we rely heavily on business to come on board and help us finance the educational trust fund,” Mkhwanazi said.

Last year, the provincial fundraising event in KwaZulu Natal managed to raise about R1.2 million.

“This is the national event so we expect businesses from all over the country to contribute and donate to this fund. We are hoping that if KZN can pull more than R1 million alone, with nine provinces that will raise more funds to assist the children of the departed members.

“These are members that we normally celebrate every September in Pretoria at the Union Buildings, that would have died in the line of duty,” he said.

National Police Commemoration Day takes place on the first Sunday in September in memory of police officers who died in the line of duty in the last twelve months.

The education trust is comprised of members that are independent of the SAPS and meets all the legal requirements for donations. 

“On the 26 January 2025, we are going to have the Excellence Awards where we recognise outstanding dedication, service, and excellence across various categories within the SAPS.

“We are going to be recognising those who have gone beyond the call of duty, including the committee members that have played the role in helping us fight crime in their role as the Community Policing Forums (CPF)

“If a police officer is off duty and places themselves in a position to prevent crime or becomes a rescuer of people that are trapped in dams or pit toilets, and you sacrifice yourself by taking them out, that is beyond your duties. It is such individuals that we want to recognize,” Mkhwanazi said. -SAnews.gov.za

Western Cape achieves highest NSC pass rate ever

The Western Cape Matric Class of 2024 has excelled with a matric pass rate of 86.6%, which is a 5.1 percentage point increase on last year’s pass rate and the province’s highest National Senior Certificate pass rate ever.

“Moreover, our bachelors pass rate, which is a crucial indicator of the quality of matric passes, has also increased by 5.6 percentage points to 47.8%. This is also the highest bachelors pass rate our department has achieved to date,” Western Cape MEC for Education David Maynier said on Monday.

The province also achieved the top Mathematics and top Physical Science pass rates again this year, with a Mathematics pass rate of 78.0%, and Physical Science pass rate of 79.4%.

“Our candidates achieved our highest number of subject distinctions to date, with 11 699 candidates achieving a total of 27 948 distinctions for the second highest distinctions rate in the country.

“We have the second highest pass rate in the country for Learners with Special Education Needs (LSEN) at 91.0%, and the highest bachelors pass rate in the country for LSEN learners at 63.3%,” the MEC said.

The province has the highest retention rate from Grade 10 to 12 in the country at 68.3%, and nearly 3 800 more Western Cape learners passed their matric exam this year compared to 2023.

“We are also delighted that our candidates have once again shone on the national stage, with four Western Cape matrics receiving awards this evening including the top candidate in the country,” he said.

These top candidates include Rayyan Ebrahim from Pinelands High School, Matthew Christopher Wise from Pinelands High School, Nicholas David Schreiber from Rondebosch Boys' High School and Jordan Raubenheimer from De La Bat School.

The four received their awards at the announcement of the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) results in Johannesburg on Monday night.

“Congratulations to our Class of 2024 and thank you for the hard work that you put in to ensure that you achieved your goals. You made a decision to invest in your own futures, and we can’t wait to see what you will go on to achieve after matric.
“The outstanding results would not have been possible without the support of matric teachers and matric parents. Thank you for everything that you have done to allow our candidates to shine, and for helping them to take their next steps.

“To the Class of 2025; last year’s matrics have shown you what can be done with dedication to your studies. We will do everything we can to support you, and if you use the year wisely, we will be celebrating with you next year,” the MEC said.

At Monday night’s ceremony, Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube announced that the Matric Class of 2024 has achieved an overall pass rate of 87.3%, making it the highest matric pass rate in the history of South Africa.

“I am proud to announce that in 2024, 615 429 learners passed the National Senior Certificate (NSC) – more than any other time in our history. South Africa’s national pass rate for the 2024 National Senior Certificate has therefore increased from 82.9% in 2023 to 87.3%,” Gwarube said.

Tributes continue for artists Doc Shebeleza and Winnie Khumalo

Sport, Arts and Culture Minister, Gayton McKenzie has described the passing of legendary Kwaito artist Victor “Doc Shebeleza” Bogopane as a “significant loss for South Africa and the entire music industry”.

Bogopane passed away on Thursday at the age of 51.

“On behalf of the Ministry, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends and countless fans whose lives he touched. South Africa has lost not only a music legend but a compassionate soul whose contributions to our cultural heritage and community upliftment will not be forgotten. 

“His music, laughter and legacy will continue to resonate in our hearts. Rest in power, Victor "Doc Shebeleza" Bogopane,” the Minister said in a statement on Thursday.

Born in 1973 in Soweto, Doc Shebeleza grew up in a family that valued cultural expression. From an early age, he was exposed to diverse musical influences, from kwaito to traditional South African music, which would later shape his artistic journey.

In 1995, he released his debut album, Shebeleza, which featured the iconic hit “Ghets Ghetsa”. This success was followed by the album “S'kumfete”, which included another hit track of the same name. 

According to the Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture Bogopane cemented his legacy with three more albums: Tiger (1997), Ebumnandini (2000), and Jiva Yoyo (2001).

“In recognition of his contributions to the genre, he was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2018 Mzansi Kwaito and House Music Awards. His influence extended beyond his own work, as illustrated by rapper Cassper Nyovest’s tribute song Doc Shebeleza, which celebrated his lifestyle and impact.

“Doc Shebeleza later collaborated with Cassper on the song ‘Monate’ showcasing mutual respect and admiration between generations of artists,” said the Ministry.

Following his retirement from the music industry, Doc Shebeleza dedicated himself to philanthropy and founded the non-profit organisation AMAHA (African Musicians Against HIV/AIDS), which focused on social initiatives for the underprivileged. 

“Through AMAHA, he contributed to building hundreds of homes for those in need, distributed wheelchairs, and worked tirelessly alongside other legendary artists to uplift communities. His passion for helping others remained central to his life’s work until his untimely passing. In recent years, Doc Shebeleza faced health challenges, having been hospitalised twice last year until his tragic passing on Thursday 9 January.”

Winnie Khumalo

Bogopane’s passing follows the death of Afropop musician, Winnie Khumalo.

Earlier in the week, the Minister expressed sadness at the passing of Khumalo also at the age of 51.

“It is with profound sadness to learn of the passing of the legendary Winnie Khumalo, who tragically left us on 7 January 2025 at the age of 51. Her untimely death marks a great loss for South Africa and the music industry,” said the Minister at the time.

Born on 20 July 1973 in Soweto, Khumalo was raised by her grandmother in a time of vibrant cultural life.

At the tender age of 15, Winnie released her debut album, “Hey Laitie, Tshina Tshina”, produced by the renowned Sello Chicco Twala. She followed this with another album, “Dlamini”, setting the stage for a prolific music career that spanned decades.

In the 1990s, she recorded the gospel album “Izono Zami”, produced by Pastor Langa Dube, and collaborated with iconic artists and groups such as the late Brenda Fassie, Brothers of Peace, Bongo Maffin, DJ Cleo, and Zonke Dikana. 

The Minister described her “not only a talented lead vocalist but a formidable backing vocalist, enriching the work of those she collaborated with”.

After a seven-year hiatus, she returned with the electrifying album “Live My Life”, which became an instant classic. The title track, “I Just Wanna Live My Life”, dominated music charts, earning gold certification with over 25 000 copies sold and 50 000 mobile downloads. 

“The song’s success saw her nominated for prestigious awards such as the Channel O Music Awards and the South African Music Awards, cementing her place as a trailblazer in the industry.”

Her later albums reflected her personal growth and resilience. Tracks like “Woman” and “Impilo” showcased her ability to channel life’s challenges into powerful and relatable music, said the Ministry. - SAnews.gov.za

VC4A Connects Funders of Africa’s Startup Success at Africa Early Stage Investor Summit (AESIS2024)

Over 300 Africa-focused delegates converged at the 11th edition of the Africa Early Stage Investor Summit, and filled up the room for the AESIS Deal Morning ready to engage with Africa's most promising founders. Next to another 15 highly promising startups, VC4A (www.VC4A.com) hosted eight female entrepreneurs from IFC's She Wins Africa program, who took the AESIS2024 stage to pitch their solutions after completing an intensive technical residency in Cape Town. The energy was palpable, reflecting the increasing investor appetite for ventures that not only deliver commercial success but also drive meaningful impact across the continent.

In the opening remarks of AESIS - which took place from the 28th to the 29th of November with the theme “Pioneering Pathways: Innovating Investment Mobilization in Africa” - VC4A CEO Vincent Hoogduijn set the tone for the two-day event. “Why does VC4A organize AESIS every year? The answer is simple - we are here to unite the African early stage investment ecosystem".

The conversations, panels, pitches and ‘investor experiences' resonated deeply with the theme, as a strong call for collaboration not only within the investor community but also from hubs and accelerators, angel groups and venture studios as well as entrepreneurs themselves.

Summing up what was a momentous event, here are the key highlights:

Day 1:

  1. Deep Dive Sessions: The discussions focused on the shifting dynamics of the African ecosystem, particularly around capital market policies, collaborations, and pipeline building. A key takeaway was the need for cross-border collaborations and the role of tech-driven platforms in streamlining the investment process. As Fridah Ntarangwi of Zidi Circle highlighted in the Collaborations and Partnerships panel, "Having functional tech-driven platforms to simplify the investment process, powered by AI and blockchain technology, is key for the ecosystem."
  2. Investor Experiences: An exclusive series of partner-hosted events to close Day 1 of AESIS2024, provided unique and casual style networking opportunities, to promote connections between investors, entrepreneurs, and leaders of industry. Partners include IFC, GIZ-SAIS, FMO Ventures, Lofty Inc Capital, TLCom Capital, Crypto Asset Investment Fund (CAIF), Digital Africa, ENZA Capital, Disraptors and Breega. The relaxed atmosphere facilitated meaningful conversations, affording the opportunity for long-term partnerships and friendships to be built.

Day 2:

  1.   2. The Partner Series: Keeping momentum of the power-packed first day, the partner series held segments on Capital Mobilization, Gender Lens and Impact. Taking an apt quote from closing remarks by Thomas van Halen, Director of Investor Services at VC4A “The evolution of the African startup ecosystem reflects the growing maturity of the market, but also highlights the need for innovative and flexible exit mechanisms to meet the diverse needs of founders, investors, and funds.”

“Entrepreneurs are the architects of Africa's success” said Phuti Mahanyele-Dabengwa, the South Africa CEO, Naspers, and the AESIS2024 Guest of Honour who delivered the moving keynote on Day 1.

Anne Kabugi, Regional Gender Lead at IFC, opening the Venture Showcase - She Wins Africa pitches, tasked the delegates with a question, a food for thought: "What if I told you that Africa's food crisis is going to be solved by women?”

Nicola Tyler of The Thinking Company delivered a welcome on Day 2's Deal Morning, charging the audience with a stand out statement: “Africa is not the biggest problem in the world, it is the biggest opportunity”.

Kenza Lahlou of Outlierz Ventures shared on the Global Development Funding Panel “The role of DFIs is not to be there forever but to provide the investments that work and exit.”

Closing out at the inaugural Awards Ceremony of the Africa Early Stage Investor Summit, Tomi Davies received a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award' for his decades of commitment to promote angel investing in Africa. He delivered a moving speech with all ears listening raptly as he concluded ”Africa's youth population is the best source to build Africa's infrastructure.”

Media urged to submit entries to SADC Media Awards competition

South African media practitioners have been called to submit their entries to the 2025 Southern African Development Community (SADC) Media Awards competition.

“To promote regional integration and cooperation (cross-border issues), the awards aim to recognise excellence in journalism in the area of print, photo, television, radio as well as to encourage media practitioners in member states to cover issues pertaining to the region,” the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) said on Wednesday.

The SADC Media Awards competition is open to journalists/media from the SADC Member States.  

They were established in 1996 to recognise best media work in disseminating information on SADC to support the process of regional cooperation and integration in the region. 

The first prize winners will receive their prizes and certificates on the margins of the SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government, which will take place in August 2025. 

The first prize winner in each category receives US$2 500 and the runner-up receives US$1 000.

The awards were established following a decision by the SADC Council of Ministers to establish a sector that deals with matters relating to, amongst others, information, culture and sport.

They present a unique opportunity for the SADC region’s journalists to be celebrated and recognised by their peers.

These awards are one of the mechanisms to ensure a link, coordination and synchronisation between formal structures of SADC governments, civil society, academia, labour and the media.

Celebrating Colonel Celeste van der Klashorst

The South African Police Service (SAPS) is observing the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign by highlighting the work of its men and women in blue who go beyond the call of duty to protect women and children in South Africa.

Colonel Celeste van der Klashorst is among those who go beyond the call of duty.

Van der Klashorst is the Section Commander of the National Serial and Electronic Crime Investigations (SECI) Unit. The unit is a specialised investigation team that deals with the investigation of serial rape cases and sexual crimes committed through electronic mediums, such as child pornography.

Her duties as the Section Commander include monitoring and evaluating SECI units within the nine provinces, leading and guiding major child pornography takedown operations and investigating high profile cases.

Van der Klashorst’s illustrious career commenced in 1991 when she joined the SAPS as a student constable.

In 1993, the SAPS established Child Protection Units which are now known as the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. 

Van der Klashorst played an instrumental role when the foundations were laid and again when SECI units were established in 2017 on national level and within all nine provinces.

A recent career highlight includes the execution of a major takedown operation named BAD VIBES. 

International operations led to 27 South Africans being identified who are involved in the possession, distribution, manufacturing, accessing and downloading of child pornography.

National and provincial SECI Units formed part of this particular takedown which led to 12 sexual predators being arrested in different parts of the country since January 2023. 

Four child victims were also positively identified while millions of images and videos classified as child pornography were seized during these operations.

Under van der Klashorst’s leadership, the SECI teams on national and provincial level continue with investigations under OPERATION BAD VIBES to trace and arrest more suspects linked to this international child pornography ring.
As a subject matter expert, van der Klashorst also presents key topics at SECI workshops and FCS courses. She says sharing her knowledge and expertise with members in the field allows her to plough back into the organisation. 

“This ultimately leads to quality investigations and water-tight cases being presented in court,” van der Klashorst said.

Just last week, the National SECI team was awarded FCS Team of the Year during the Division for Forensic and Detective Service’s annual Excellence Awards. 

“Being at the forefront of fighting crimes against women and children is my passion. I always tell my team that it needs all hands on deck to prevent, combat and investigate sexual offences, gender-based violence and online child exploitation," said van der Klashorst. 

Colonel Celeste van der Klashorst remains relentless in her pursuit to trace and arrest more online sexual predators.

The 16 Days campaign forms part of government’s comprehensive 365 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children.

This year’s campaign is being held under the theme: “30 Years of Advancing Collective Action to End Violence against Women and Children".

Journalists called to tell positive African stories

While the continent faces many challenges, South African award-winning journalist, Benjamin Moshatama, has emphasised the importance of telling positive stories that reflect the progress and development in Africa.

With his story on the importance of shared water resources in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) regional integration and development and the contribution of the Kingdom of Lesotho in the management of shared water resources, Moshatama won second prize in the Radio Category at the SADC Media Awards Competition.

“I was inspired to do the story because it’s a positive African story. At times when we look at Africa, we focus on the obvious trying story. Of course, as journalists we should look at the stories about the challenges on the continent, but the narrative cannot be one dimensional.

“It has to be multi-dimensional. Africa is a complex place. There are positive things happening on the continent and a lot of progress is being made, that is why it was important to tell the story,” the journalist from Channel Africa Radio told SAnews on Friday.

The SADC Media Awards are aimed at promoting excellence in the fields of Print Journalism, Radio Journalism, Television Journalism and Photojournalism. 

They serve as a link for coordination and synchronisation between the formal structures of SADC member states and media. They further seek to bring and enhance a partnership between the media and government institutions.

The SADC Media Awards present a unique opportunity for the SADC region’s journalists to be celebrated and recognised by their peers.

“I am a very proud South African so to compete on a regional level was important for me to lift the flag of South Africa high in terms of our media representation and it’s important for us to shine a light on narratives showing the cooperative governance structures that are in the region,” he said.

Two South African journalists won in the Radio and Photo category respectively. 

Fikile Necter Marakalla was the second prize winner in the Photo Category with her pictures that were published in SAnews and The Diplomatic Informer. 

Marakalla’s winning entry highlighted the strong fraternal, historical as well as social relations between South Africa and the United Republic of Tanzania during the State visit of her Excellency Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Marakalla started working at the Government Communication and Information Systems (GCIS) as an intern in 2022 on a two-year contract and when it ended in March this year, she took up a position in the office of the Deputy President as a photographer.

“It’s an honour to be recognised for the work that I did so early in my career. I am looking forward to serving the public through my work, which captures government’s work and the programmes that are aimed improving the lives of South Africans,” she said.

South Africa’s participation in SADC is guided by the SADC Treaty. The SADC Treaty guides all Member States within the regional bloc.

The Treaty encourages the people of the region and their institutions to take initiatives to develop economic, social and cultural ties.

The GCIS is responsible for the implementation of the annual Southern African Development Community (SADC) Media Awards on behalf of South Africa.

Deputy Minister in The Presidency Kenneth Morolong encouraged media practitioners to share stories on the economic wellbeing of the continent, improvement of the standard of living and the improvement of quality of life, peace and security, freedom and social justice and economic progress.

“These awards are a testament to the power of hope in driving further success of SADC. We have a lot going for us as a region and we remain one of the most stable regions in Africa. The potential for our region is enormous,” Morolong said.

Tererai Mare, Enterprise Market Development Manager at Mukuru, explains that before EPP, businesses and nonprofits had to rely on traditional methods such as mobile money and banks to facilitate bulk payments. “These methods presented limitations — high transaction and encashment fees, delays, and limited reach in rural areas,” Mare says. “These issues hindered the efficient distribution of aid and management of payroll, especially in vulnerable communities.” 

Aid organisations faced significant hurdles in making bulk payments, while remote communities had limited access to affordable and convenient financial services. This created delays in aid reaching those in need and added financial pressure on businesses. 

The solution 

EPP was built on Mukuru's extensive person-to-person physical and digital payment infrastructure across Africa. The platform, known for its reach and liquidity, has many benefits, explains Mare.

Aid Agency Applications: 

Malawi 

Chiyembekezo Ken Ndala, Enterprise Sales Manager for Malawi at Mukuru, shares that the company partnered with CADECOM National Office for emergency flood relief in the aftermath of a recent cyclone. “CADECOM used the Mukuru platform to reach 4,520 households across several underserved areas.,” Ndala says. The timely distribution of funds allowed families to recover quickly and have their basic needs met. 

Mukuru also partners with Yamba Malawi, which provides monthly stipends to teenage mothers. “Yamba Malawi supports teen mothers, each receiving $20 per month for 12 months, with an additional $100 as seed capital after six months. This funding helps them care for their children and start small businesses to break the cycle of poverty,” Ndala explains. As an ongoing project, Mukuru has disbursed over $100,000 (MK183,600,000) to these beneficiaries. 

Zimbabwe 

Michael Scott, Group Head of Commercial at Mukuru, says that Mukuru has built extensive partnerships with United Nations agencies, including UNICEF, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), and the World Food Programme (WFP). 

“Mukuru was awarded a contract by WFP to distribute monthly cash grants to refugees at the Tongogara Refugee Camp. The EPP platform enables efficient delivery and end-to-end traceability of essential emergency funds to this vulnerable community” Scott explains. 

Scott explains that Mukuru has been awarded prestigious Long-Term Agreements by both UNICEF and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), underscoring its capability and reliability in delivering essential financial services across Africa. Under these agreements, Mukuru has facilitated payments to beneficiaries under emergency social cash transfer programming in Zimbabwe, alongside the provision of payroll services and payments to vendors and workshop participants. 

International NGOs, like Action Contre la Faim, have partnered with Mukuru to deliver cash transfers to remote households via Mukuru's mobile disbursement service. Mukuru's mobile teams schedule trips to these hard-to-reach areas and provide regular access to financial services, supporting a base level of financial inclusion and social upliftment otherwise not possible. 

Payroll and Commercial Applications: 

Mare explains that Mukuru also serves the varying needs of businesses needing to make payments to their employees, customers or smaller suppliers, who may not have bank accounts. “Many workers earn low salaries, making bank accounts unaffordable due to high transaction and maintenance fees. The EPP platform helps these workers receive payments efficiently, without encashment or ongoing account fee, addressing a major financial inclusion gap.” 

On the commercial side, Mukuru partners with the likes of Cottco and Premier Tobacco Auction Floors, heavyweights in Zimbabwe's cotton and tobacco industries, to facilitate payments to small-scale farmers. “These farmers often don't have bank accounts and come from far and wide to sell or auction their goods. Mukuru's EPP ensures they receive payments securely and swiftly. A Mukuru cash voucher is as trusted as the USD cash for which it can be exchanged, but safer to travel with on long journeys to and from the auction floors,” Mare adds.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has hailed the triumphs of South African athletes at the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games at a celebratory ceremony held at the Union Buildings, in Tshwane. 

The event honoured the medalists and highlighted the transformative power of sport in uniting the nation.

“This is a moment of great pride for our nation. It is a moment to express our gratitude to those who have represented our nation with such distinction on the world’s greatest stage. Today, we are not just celebrating medals and the star athletes who won them,” the President said on Friday. 

The President emphasised that this is also a celebration of South Africa's spirit, the unifying power of sport, its ability to inspire, and its reminder of the strength when united as a nation. 

“We are celebrating the extraordinary resilience of our athletes, their unwavering determination and their incredible talent. We are celebrating the profound symbolism that sport holds in our society,” the President said. 

The President reflected on South Africa’s journey in international sport, from years of exclusion under apartheid, to reclaiming its place on the world stage during the 1992 Olympics. He noted that the country’s participation in the Games symbolises the pursuit of equality, justice, and national unity.

South Africa’s athletes returned from Paris with an impressive haul: six Olympic medals (one gold, three silver and two bronze), and six Paralympic medals (two gold and four bronze).

Key highlights of the ceremony today included the presentation of recognition awards to all medalists and the prestigious Shield of Jove to swimmer Tatjana Smith and Paralympic athlete Mpumelelo Mhlongo for their outstanding performances. 

This prestigious award was donated to the South African government in 1948 by Frederick Mitchell-Hedges, a British archaeologist involved in mining in South Africa.

It is a symbol of excellence, perseverance and dedication to the pursuit of sporting greatness.

“We are also honouring the athletes that achieved the most outstanding performances at the Olympic and Paralympic Games with the presentation of the Shield of Jove. 

“This year, we are proud to award the Shield of Jove to Tatjana Smith and Mpumelelo Mhlongo, in recognition of their exceptional achievements at the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games,” the President said. 

He said these achievements are a testament to the investments the country has made in sports infrastructure and grassroots development. 

“However, we must do more to ensure that the next generation of South African athletes has even greater opportunities to succeed,” he said. 

The President emphasised the need for expanded youth development programmes, particularly in rural and underserved communities, and strengthened partnerships with schools and community centres.

“We must continue to invest in youth development, ensuring that children in every part of our country – whether urban or rural – have access to sports programmes. This means strengthening our partnerships with local schools, community centres and clubs.

“We must make sure that our youth are equipped with the skills, coaching and facilities they need to reach their full potential,” the President said. 

In addition to athletes, the President acknowledged the critical role of coaches, trainers, families and sponsors, including the National Lotteries Commission and corporate partners, in supporting Team SA’s success.

“We are a nation forged in struggle, in adversity and in hope. To the Olympic and Paralympic champions with us here today, we say thank you.

“We are a nation that stands united, proud and ready for the challenges of the future. Together, we will continue to build a legacy of sporting excellence. A legacy that will inspire many generations to come,” the President said.

Athletes who successfully represented South Africa at the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be celebrated at an event hosted by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Friday.

The President will lead the celebration at a ceremony at the Union Buildings.

“The ceremony will recognise the excellence demonstrated by top athletes as well as the organisational effort by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee to prepare Team South Africa for the Games.

“Team South Africa featured 147 athletes at the Paris Olympics Games, which took place from 26 July to 11 August 2024, and 32 athletes at the Paris Summer Paralympics Games from 28 August to 08 September 2024,” said the Presidency.

A total of 12 medals were achieved for the respective games. Six each for the Olympics - one gold, three silver and two bronze - and Paralympics - two gold, and four bronze.

The appreciation ceremony will include the conferring of awards to deserving athletes and their coaches as well as the Shield of Jove, which is the highest South African recognition in sports achievement following the Olympic and Paralympic Games. – SAnews.gov.za

SA’s MSME celebrated for their resilience and job-creation efforts

In a room alive with entrepreneurial energy and determination, South Africa's Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) were celebrated for their resilience and job-creation efforts at the Presidential MSMEs and Cooperatives Awards. 

Hosted by the Department of Small Business Development, the awards aim to spotlight and reward South Africa’s top-performing MSMEs, cooperatives, and ecosystem enablers driving growth and transformation. 

The Minister of Small Business Development, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, led the event at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, with President Cyril Ramaphosa delivering the keynote address. 

The ceremony honoured businesses that embody innovation, commitment to local development, and entrepreneurial spirit. 

Two Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to business icons Dr. Mike Nkuna, the founder and Executive Chairman of the Masingita Group of Companies, and Dr. Gloria Serobe, the co-founder of Women Investment Portfolio Holdings (Wiphold) and Chancellor of the Tshwane University of Technology. 

Arion Power, a start-up founded by three young entrepreneurs, Brian Gadisi, Alan Gie, and Themba Hadebe, emerged as a major winner. 

Their product, WiBox, a mini-UPS that powers routers during outages, has earned them two prestigious awards -- Youth-led MSME of the Year and MSME of the Year. 

Speaking to SAnews, Gadisi expressed pride in their achievement. 

“This award reassures the hard work we've put into research and development, the sleepless nights, and our efforts to crack technology often dominated by the East and West. It shows that Africa has the capability to innovate on par with global leaders,” he said. 

Another standout was Kedibone Segole, the 30-year-old founder of Moipone Aesthetics, a black-owned township start-up based in Mabopane, Pretoria. Her company, which manufactures high-quality natural personal care products, won the Township MSME of the Year award and a cash prize of R200 000. 

Speaking to SAnews, Segole encouraged aspiring entrepreneurs to start small and stay persistent. 

“What I would like to say to young and upcoming entrepreneurs, along with unemployed graduates and youth, start something, work on it and believe in it. Push. Your breakthrough will come. Whatever you have, the little you have, use it. It can make you reach boundaries that you have never even imagined. 

Segole said winning the award means that they are recognised, acknowledged and important. 

“The President acknowledges our efforts, and he believes in the strides that we are making in an effort to come out of poverty, unemployment and the social ills we are affected by in the townships. It's in our hands. Vuk' uzenzele (get up and do it for yourself)!” she said. 

Segole revealed her business journey began with just R600 from a UIF payout after losing her job in 2016. With support from stakeholders like the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) and Innovation Hub, her perseverance has transformed her business into a success story. 

“I was fortunate enough that along the way there has been government assistance from the NYDA, as well and the Innovation Hub, among other stakeholders. As a started, I used the little that I had and look where it has gotten me today,” she said. 

Another inspiring recipient was Dimakatso Kanyane, the 32-year-old founder of Dillets Sanitary Towels. Her innovative product, designed for African women, won the Start-up Business of the Year Award. 

Motivated by her own experience with her cycle, Kanyane developed a product that addresses a critical need. 

Kanyane told SAnews that the award was a full circle moment for her. 

“This award affirms a lot of things, that no matter how hard the journey is, with authenticity and perseverance, you can overcome any obstacle. To those who are aspiring to be on this journey -- stay ambitious, trust and believe that perseverance will lead you to the fulfilment of your dreams. 

“I used to have heavy flows and severe period pains and there wasn’t a sanitary towel that catered to my specific needs. It was this search that eventually led me to the development of Dillets Sanitary Towels, a sanitary towel designed for African women by an African woman,” she said.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has used his address at the Presidential Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Cooperatives Awards to call on banks to make money available for businesses. 

Speaking at the awards held at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Gauteng on Friday, the President emphasised that with interest rates declining, this is an opportune time to make funding more accessible to drive economic growth. 

“As interest rates are coming down and are bound to come down even further, this is the time to make finance available within obviously the various consideration that you have to take into account. 

“This is the time to make finance available and pump energy and life into our economy because when small and medium enterprises are given enabling energy by our financial institutions... they will be able to run businesses to be creative, to create jobs and our economy can grow.

“I call on the banks and financial institutes to make money available so that our businesses can grow,” the President said. 

Hosted by the Department of Small Business Development, the Presidential Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and Cooperatives Awards are aimed at highlighting and rewarding the achievements of South Africa’s top-performing MSMEs, cooperatives, and ecosystem enablers who drive growth and transformation across the nation.

The President also took a moment to address the recent spate of foodborne illnesses that have been linked to spaza shops and informal traders in townships. He said this has thrown into sharp focus the issues of regulation, health and safety. 

At the same time, he said the issue has highlighted the critical role small businesses play in communities, providing much-needed services and supporting local economies. 

“That is why it is so important to bring small businesses into the mainstream of the economy, and that we provide the necessary support for them to do this. 

“International experience shows that MSMEs are drivers of sustainable growth. Countries with more MSMEs tend to have lower levels of inequality. Entrepreneurs are the drivers of innovation,” he said. 

However, the President acknowledged that rates of entrepreneurship in South Africa are low by continental standards. 

He told entrepreneurs and delegates at the awards that it is essential that they encourage entrepreneurship. 

“It is vital that we enable the emergence and growth of MSMEs and cooperatives. We must focus on targeted interventions to address financial exclusion and onerous regulatory requirements.

“We must provide access to funding, capacity building and other support. The success of the finalists here this evening shows that with the right support, small businesses can succeed, expand and be sustainable,” the President said. 

The President said that the Government of National unity has made inclusive growth and job creation its apex priority, and supporting small enterprises is an integral part of these efforts.

President Ramaphosa said the National Planning Commission estimates that the country needs 5.8 million MSMEs to meet job creation targets. 

The President said that this means there is a need to double the number of MSMEs in the country. 

“We are encouraged by the efforts underway to capacitate the sector. One of these is the merging of SEFA [Small Enterprise Finance Agency], SEDA [Small Enterprise Development Agency] and the Cooperatives Bank Development Agency into the newly-formed Small Enterprise Development Finance Agency.

“Of the R730 million disbursed by the new agency to date, R101 million has gone to township enterprises and R261 million to rural enterprises,” he said. 

The Small Enterprise Development Finance Agency has also provided non-financial business support to more than 15 000 township and rural enterprises. 

The President said that legislation is in the pipeline to streamline business licensing. 

An e-registration system that integrates the work of the South African Revenue Service and the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) is under development. 

“If we are to fully unlock entrepreneurial potential, there must be a razor-sharp focus on start-up growth, especially in the burgeoning tech sector. We must ensure that we are not left behind in the global transition to knowledge and innovation-based economies. 

“As part of this, we must scale up the adoption of advances like mobile payments and digitised record-keeping by small businesses,” he said. 

President Ramaphosa said he was encouraged by the work of the Department of Small Business Development and the Department of Science and Innovation around a national start-up policy.

Among other things, this policy will deal with issues such as intellectual property registration and foreign exchange controls.

“Even as this is all work in progress, we recognise the urgency with which we must scale up support for small businesses in South Africa. They are the driving force of our economy.

“The finalists and recipients of this year’s awards are a shining example of what can be achieved. Allow me to congratulate all the winners and runners-up. You have done well. You are a fine example to other South Africans who want to follow their entrepreneurial dreams,” the President said. 

The President also took a moment to thank the organisers of the awards, the generous sponsors and the millions of entrepreneurs who make the country work and the economy grow. 

“These are the micro, small and medium enterprises and cooperatives that create livelihoods and jobs. They provide communities with vital services. They create value that goes far beyond turnover or profit.

Africa Celebrates Ranger Heroes at the 2024 African Conservation Awards

The 2024 African Conservation Awards, hosted by the Game Rangers' Association of Africa (GRAA) (www.GameRanger.org) is an opportunity to celebrate just some of the outstanding work by African conservationists. It is the GRAA's privilege to be able to showcase the exceptional contributions to protecting Africa's natural heritage. In 2024, the GRAA modified categories in this prestigious event to ensure Marine Rangers are also recognised and celebrated.

These awards continue to remind us of our responsibility to rangers working across Africa, many of whom are working in challenging environments with a lack of resources. Every organisation and individual nominated for these awards has displayed remarkable resilience and determination, despite their overwhelming odds and have remained steadfast in their dedication to achieving their conservation goals, inspiring us all with their unwavering commitment. Rangers should be acknowledged and celebrated.

The Winners for the 2024 African Conservation Awards are:

Best Field Ranger

Winner: Modiki Claver, Ranger Team Leader, Dzanga Sangha Protected Areas, Central African Republic (CAR)

Modiki Claver, the Team Leader of Dzanga Sangha Protected Area's law enforcement section in CAR, has risen from starting as a porter in 2010 to becoming the top team leader in the landscape. Leading a team of seven rangers across the Congo Basin, including parts of Noubale-Ndoki National Park and Lobeke National Park, Claver exemplifies leadership by dismantling snares, seizing weapons, and making arrests. He has significantly contributed to scientific research, including tracking elephant populations, assessing the impact of logging, and monitoring illegal hunting activities. Beyond his law enforcement duties, Claver has fostered strong relationships with local communities and youth, guiding them toward conservation careers. During the 2013 military-political unrest, he demonstrated exceptional courage by covertly tracking rebel movements and providing critical information to protect wildlife. Known for his field skills, ethical leadership, and commitment to the rights of indigenous people, Claver is an inspiring role model in conservation.

1st Runner Up: Sekibibi Bareke Désiré, Central Sector Manager, Virunga National Park, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

2nd Runner Up: Jean Claude Kyungu, Former Head Ranger Maiko National Park, DRC

Best Marine Ranger

Winner: Chanel Hauvette, Senior Marine Field Ranger, Robberg Nature Reserve and Marine Protected Area and Keurbooms River Nature Reserve, South Africa

Chanel Hauvette is a Senior Marine Field Ranger who demonstrates extraordinary dedication to marine conservation, leading stranding responses, law enforcement, biodiversity monitoring, and community engagement across Robberg Nature Reserve and Marine Protected Area. As coordinator of the Plett Stranding Network, she manages hundreds of annual strandings, from seals and birds to endangered turtles, often stabilizing animals at her own home. Despite challenges like limited resources and transportation, Chanel forges strong partnerships with local businesses, NGOs, and residents to secure support. Her leadership, innovative protocols, and passion for conservation inspire her team, educate communities, and ensure the protection of marine biodiversity.

1st Runner Up: Emily Nyevu Simba, Ranger Corporal, Watamu Marine Protected Area, Kenya

2nd Runner Up: Clive Hendricks, Section Ranger, Addo Elephant National Park - Marine Section, South Africa

Best Ranger Team

Winner: South Luangwa Rapid Response Unit for Human-Wildlife Conflict, South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

The South Luangwa Rapid Response Unit for Human-Wildlife Conflict (RRU-HWC) is a joint initiative between Conservation South Luangwa and the Department of National Parks and Wildlife. It has significantly improved coexistence between communities and wildlife through proactive education, innovative solutions, and swift conflict resolution. Reaching over 4,000 people, their educational outreach fostered awareness and led to a 44% improvement in predator-proof livestock enclosures, reducing livestock predation. The team also tackled challenges like elephant crop raids and predator attacks with rapid responses and non-lethal deterrents, earning trust within the community. Despite resource limitations, the RRU-HWC has empowered local wildlife committees, inspired community-led initiatives, and strengthened partnerships with government and NGOs. Their dedication has not only mitigated conflicts but also fostered a culture of conservation, ensuring long-term benefits for both people and wildlife.

1st Runner Up: Tango 1 Mobile APU Team, Tana Delta, Kenya

2nd Runner Up: South Luangwa K9 Unit, South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

Best Ranger Supporter

Winner: Munene Kamundi, Strong Ranger Initiative, Kenya

Munene Kamundi is a dedicated advocate for wildlife ranger wellbeing, leveraging his expertise in occupational health and safety to address critical challenges faced by rangers in conservation. Despite financial hardships and resource limitations, he has reached over 400 rangers this year, aiming to support 5,000 annually. Through his innovative wellness ambassadors program, Kamundi promotes mental health, safety practices, and emergency response training, aligning with global biodiversity frameworks like the Kunming-Montreal agreement. His tireless commitment, even in the face of adversity, highlights his transformative leadership and vision to integrate ranger wellbeing into sustainable conservation efforts across Africa.

1st Runner Up: Amon Koutoua Benoît, Technical Director, Office Ivoirien des Parcs et Réserves, Côte d'Ivoire

2nd Runner Up: WCS Congo Counter-Wildlife Trafficking Teams (North and South), DRC and Republic of Congo

In a poignant video message, His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco, esteemed Patron of the African Conservation Awards, paid homage to the brave conservation heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice. He solemnly honored the memory of the 64 rangers who tragically lost their lives in the line of duty over the past year, safeguarding our planet's invaluable natural heritage. Prince Albert expressed profound gratitude to these fallen heroes and to all of Africa's rangers, who selflessly dedicate their lives to protecting our natural spaces. He urged collective action to support the 30x30 global initiative, emphasizing that achieving these ambitious goals requires providing rangers with the resources, infrastructure, and tools they urgently need. His message carried a deep reverence for the thousands of rangers who face immense risks daily, serving as steadfast guardians of our planet's biodiversity and natural wonders.

President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Friday, 22 November 2024 address the National Presidential MSME & Cooperatives Awards ceremony at Gallagher Convention Centre, Midrand.

This premier event is dedicated to recognising outstanding Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and Cooperatives and is hosted by the Department of Small Business Development (DSBD).

The awards aim to spotlight and reward the achievements of South Africa's top-performing MSMEs, Cooperatives, and ecosystem enablers who drive growth and transformation across the nation.

This ceremony will honour businesses that embody innovation, commitment to local development, and entrepreneurial spirit. The selected finalists have advanced through rigorous district and provincial pitches and demonstrated their excellence and resilience across various categories.

This year's finalists are an eclectic group of companies that span various key sectors of the economy in both the formal and informal businesses. These small businesses have also shown a lot of creativity, ingenuity, and resilience in penetrating sectors that are normally hard to enter.

Categories for this year's MSME Awards include, but not limited to:

The importance of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and cooperatives’ development in advancing South Africa’s broader economic goals will come in to focus at the National Presidential MSME and Cooperatives Awards on Friday.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address the awards ceremony at Gallagher Convention Centre, in Midrand. 

This premier event, hosted by the Department of Small Business Development, is dedicated to recognising outstanding Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and cooperatives. 

The awards aim to reward the achievements of South Africa’s top-performing MSMEs, cooperatives, and ecosystem enablers who drive growth and transformation across the nation.
