​Merck Foundation (www.Merck-Foundation.com), the philanthropic arm of Merck KGaA Germany, in partnership with the African First Ladies, announced the winners of Merck Foundation's Song Awards 2023 under two themes - “More Than a Mother” and “Diabetes and Hypertension.”

The awards were announced by Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation and President of Merck Foundation ‘More Than a Mother' campaign, together with African First Ladies, who are also the Ambassadors of Merck Foundation ‘More Than a Mother' campaign.

Senator Dr. Kelej said, “I feel so elated to announce the winners of Merck Foundation's “More Than a Mother” and “Diabetes and Hypertension” Song Awards in partnership with my dear sisters, African First Ladies, who are also the Ambassadors of “Merck Foundation More Than a Mother”. I congratulate and applaud our 13 talented winners.

Songs are a powerful medium for addressing and influencing social and health issues across Africa. This year's entries were exceptional, with lyrics that effectively conveyed impactful messages, sparking meaningful thought and dialogue within communities.”

The theme of “More Than a Mother” Song Awards was to raise awareness on any of the following social issues such as: Breaking Infertility Stigma, Supporting Girl Education, Ending Child Marriage, Ending FGM, Stopping GBV and/or Women Empowerment at all levels and the theme of “Diabetes and Hypertension” Song Awards was to promote a healthy lifestyle and raise awareness about prevention and early detection of Diabetes and Hypertension in the African countries.

Senator Rasha added, “I have always believed that music and art have the power to evoke emotions, which in turn inspire engagement and action. This belief led us to introduce our Song Awards in 2019. To date, we have celebrated close to 50 winners.

Moreover, we have produced over 30 songs and music videos to address many critical and sensitive issues across Africa.”

Access Bank’s Africa Trade Conference Ignites New Era of Intra-Africa Commerce

Access Bank PLC (www.AccessBankPLC.com) successfully hosted the inaugural Africa Trade Conference in Cape Town, South Africa, bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and trade experts to drive solutions for accelerating intra-African trade and unlocking the continent's economic potential. The conference tackled critical challenges, including limited access to capital, market information gaps, trust deficits between trading partners, and the urgent need for modernised trade infrastructure.

Roosevelt Ogbonna, Managing Director/CEO of Access Bank, delivered the opening remarks, setting the tone for discussions by highlighting the critical barriers hindering trade across Africa. He emphasised the urgent need for financial sector collaboration to facilitate seamless access to capital and foster a business environment where African enterprises can scale and compete globally.

“We must invest in the initiatives that ensure that we can bring businesses together, forge trust, and create the connections necessary for trade. In doing so, we must stamp out the narrative that 'Made in Africa' is inferior to any product made anywhere else in the world. We must buy Africa, be proud to wear Africa, and invest in Africa because that is what the continent needs to leap forward into the next generation,” Ogbonna stated.

With Africa's population projected to surge to 2.5 billion by 2050 from 1.2 billion, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) stands as the most significant free trade initiative since the formation of the World Trade Organisation. By fostering economic integration, AfCFTA has the potential to reshape trade dynamics across the continent, creating a unified market that enhances industrialisation, boosts employment, and strengthens Africa's global competitiveness. Recognising this transformative opportunity, H.E. Wamkele K. Mene, Secretary-General of AfCFTA, emphasised the urgency of fully implementing the agreement to unlock its immense benefits.

"The AfCFTA is not just a trade agreement; it is an instrument for Africa's industrialisation and economic sovereignty. It is a tool that will enable us to break down historic trade barriers and build an Africa that is self-sufficient, competitive, and prosperous. But for this to happen, we must commit to operationalising the agreement fully, ensuring that businesses, particularly SMEs and women-led enterprises, have access to the information, capital, and platforms they need to thrive,” Mene stated.

Also, Kanayo Awani, Executive Vice President of Afreximbank, emphasised the importance of financing mechanisms that support African businesses in their expansion across borders. She reaffirmed Afreximbank's commitment to championing trade finance solutions and infrastructure investments that will unlock Africa's trade potential.

“At Afreximbank, we understand that trade finance is the lifeblood of economic development. Without it, businesses cannot scale, industries cannot innovate, and Africa cannot fully realise its trade potential. This is why we have developed instruments such as the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS) to facilitate seamless transactions across borders, reducing reliance on foreign currencies and strengthening intra-African trade,” Awani remarked.

The conference featured an insightful testimonial from Nathalie Louat, Global Director at the IFC/World Bank Group, who pointed out the pivotal role of trade finance in enabling cross-border transactions and supporting financial inclusion. She underscored the long-standing partnership between IFC and Access Bank in fostering Africa's economic resilience.

Several high-level panel discussions explored strategies to overcome trade barriers and enhance market access through innovative solutions. Experts from leading institutions, including Deutsche Bank, Traydstream, OWP Partners, Fiducia International, and more, examined how infrastructure improvements, digital solutions, and policy harmonisation could drive economic growth and boost intra-African trade.

Dr. Marc Auboin from the World Trade Organization (WTO) shared key insights on how digital transformation is reshaping Africa's supply chain landscape, creating efficiency and unlocking new global market opportunities. Tanya Dos Santos-Ford from GIBS Business School also led a session on sustainable trade practices, emphasising the need for environmentally responsible economic growth strategies.

The event culminated in an awards ceremony recognising outstanding contributions to intra-African trade and economic transformation. Tradepass Commodities Limited (Ghana), Chemaf International FZE (DR Congo), and Harvest Group of Companies (Zambia) were honoured for their impact on SMEs and women-led trade enterprises. Bulkstream Limited (Kenya) and Electricidade de Moçambique (Mozambique) received awards for advancing intra-African trade, while Tennant Metals South Africa Pty Ltd was recognised as an Emerging Leader in Trade.

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) was awarded the Climate Finance Leadership Award, while Afreximbank received the Champion of Intra-African Trade Award. The African Development Bank (AfDB) and Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) were celebrated for their roles in economic transformation and infrastructure finance, respectively. The prestigious African Icon Award was presented to IHS Group, Dangote Industries Limited, and MTN Group Limited for their significant contributions to Africa's economic progress.

As the conference ended, Seyi Kumapayi, Executive Director, African Subsidiaries at Access Bank, reaffirmed the institution's commitment to supporting trade finance, fostering regional integration, and championing policies that create an enabling environment for businesses across Africa.

Five Years of Advancing Investment, Collaboration in Africa’s Energy Sector

African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies, the premier platform for Africa's energy sector, marks its fifth anniversary in 2025, celebrating a legacy of driving investment, fostering partnerships and advancing the continent's energy future. Over the past five years, AEW has facilitated multi-billion-dollar deals, shaped policy discussions and strengthened regional cooperation. The event reinforced Africa's appeal to investors while establishing AEW's strategic goal of eradicating energy poverty by 2030. Key agreements signed included Afreximbank's $75 million financing deal with Torxen Energy Resources for Nigeria's PPL 241, a hydrogen exploration agreement between The Gambia and H2 Gambia Limited, and a $60 million term loan for Alphaden Energy & Oilfield Limited to develop a gas facility in Nigeria. Additionally, the African Energy Chamber partnered with the Black Impact Foundation to promote global opportunities for the Black community. The African Farmout Forum connected investors with available blocks, accelerating exploration and partnerships across Africa's oil and gas sector.

In 2024, AEW underscored its role as a catalyst for deal-making and sectoral development. Afreximbank committed over $120 million in financial facilities to support Africa's oil and gas sector, while the Republic of Congo's Société nationale des pétroles du Congo partnered with the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan to modernize the CORAF refinery and the African Farmout Forum returned to highlight available block opportunities for partnership and investment. The event featured a distinguished lineup of speakers and delegations, including energy ministers from South Africa, Namibia, the Republic of Congo, Gabon, Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and Angola; OPEC and APPO secretary generals; and top executives from Eni, bp, Chevron, TotalEnergies and other leading energy companies.

The fifth edition of AEW promises an even greater focus on investment opportunities and project developments, including 2025/2026 licensing rounds, multi-phase LNG facilities, new refining capacity, drilling and appraisal programs and cross-border pipeline infrastructure. All flagship features will return, including the Big Five Stages of Premium Industry Content, the African Farmout Forum, the Deal Room, the OPEC-Africa Roundtable and more. Summit to boost small enterprise development in KZN

Business leaders, entrepreneurs and government officials in KwaZulu-Natal are currently engaging on critical issues impacting small enterprises across the province.

These role players are gathered at the 2025 Umyezane Summit, Conference and Awards, which is taking place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre and hosted by the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA).

Addressing the opening of the summit on Monday, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli emphasised the pivotal role played by small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) in driving economic transformation and creating jobs within the province.

“The growth of SMMEs is central to building a resilient and inclusive economy. Through initiatives like the Umyezane Summit, we aim to empower small businesses, strengthen township and rural economies, and ensure that historically disadvantaged entrepreneurs are given meaningful opportunities to thrive,” Ntuli said.

He highlighted the provincial government’s commitment to fostering an enabling environment for entrepreneurs by addressing barriers including crime, access to funding, and market opportunities.

The summit and accompanying awards reflect the provincial government’s vision of fostering a thriving, inclusive economy driven by small enterprises.

Ntuli assured entrepreneurs that KwaZulu-Natal remains committed to policy reforms, financial support, and capacity-building programmes that will position SMMEs as key drivers of economic growth.

EDTEA MEC Musa Zondi noted the importance of public-private partnerships in unlocking economic opportunities for SMMEs.

“We must remove red tape, foster innovation and create sustainable pathways for small businesses to succeed in both local and global markets,” Zondi said.

Eden Sleep Innovation takes home first place at furniture awards 

Eden Sleep Innovation, a bed-making company, is celebrating after winning first place in the manufacturing category at the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition’s annual Furniture Design Competition.

The award was presented to the company for their innovative hybrid flatpack bed base design.

The creative design, known as Unibase, is engineered and manufactured locally and combines sustainable wood and recycled plastic. 

It is a compact ‘carry and go’ bed base that can easily fit into a car or taxi, as well as through doorways and staircases. It also saves up to 85 % in space throughout the supply chain, including warehousing and transportation.

The Managing Director of Eden Sleep Innovation, Aldrin John, said they are honoured to have won the award as a testament to the vision of the company.

“Our vision as a company is to revolutionise sleep and furniture solutions with innovative, high-quality, and affordable products. This annual initiative, led by the dtic, now in its 10th year, plays a crucial role in showcasing the capabilities of local young talent and seasoned professionals in the furniture industry. 

“We encourage more industry stakeholders to get involved in future initiatives, as they are essential for fostering innovation and growth within the South African furniture sector,” John said.

Chief Director of Agro-processing and Forestry Based Industries at the dtic, Ncumisa Mcata-Mhlauli, said the competition was established by the department to promote innovation in the development of new, competitive furniture products, and to contribute towards skills development initiatives.

“The Furniture Industry Masterplan adopted in 2021 identifies the shortage of high-level skills in the furniture industry, such as design and skilled artisans in furniture manufacturing, as a major concern,” Mhlauli said in a statement on Wednesday.

She said the competition is an instrument the department is using to promote and encourage interest in the furniture industry and to entice upcoming designers into the industry. 

“We want to raise and nurture design capabilities in the country, raise the image ofthe  furniture manufacturing industry in South Africa, improve the industry’s competitiveness and reposition the industry for high value-added products,” she said. - SAnews.gov.za

eThekwini Municipality tackles water challenges

The eThekwini Municipality will continue to work on various interventions to manage and reduce the increase in water demand that has resulted in the recurring disruption of water supply.

To manage the demand and to build storage, the municipality has implemented rationing in many areas, especially in the Northern and Southern areas. 

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the municipality noted that demand currently exceeds supply by approximately 100 megalitres a day, resulting in further strain on the system. 

This is due to the current curtailment measures that were implemented by uMngeni-uThukela Water in October last year. 

“To augment the water supply, comprehensive plans have been set in motion in collaboration with the national Department of Water and Sanitation and uMngeni-uThukela Water to construct and commission the uMkhomazi Dam, a pivotal project to augment water supply to the city,” the municipality said. 

The municipality is also actively implementing various medium-term interventions, including infrastructure upgrades, pipeline replacements, and a comprehensive leak detection and repair programme. 

The installation of pressure management valves, dysfunctional meter replacements, the incorporation of technology to enhance meter accuracy, and improvements in billing and debtor management, are also being implemented. 

“Currently, areas in the West of the city are experiencing intermittent supply due to the shutdown of the 53 Pipeline by uMngeni-uThukela Water. This was done to allow the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) to relocate approximately 200m of the 53 Pipeline, as part of its N3 upgrade project,” the municipality said.

Durban’s beachfront set for major overhaul

Meanwhile, Durban’s iconic beachfront is set to undergo a major transformation, with a complete facelift and redevelopment of the buildings along the promenade.

Over the past few years, changes have been made to improve the offering to visitors on the beachfront, ensuring that it remains a world-class facility. 

Head of the Real Estate Unit, Thapelo Mmusinyane noted that as tenant leases expire, the municipality follows proper process to invite bids for the development of innovative new spaces and eateries that will elevate the beachfront experience.

This forms an integral part of the City’s Proactive Land Release Strategy, which was adopted in September 2021.

The strategy enables the city to proactively manage surplus land, assisting the city to achieve its developmental objectives, stimulate economic activity and Black economic empowerment, and promoting economic transformation in the property sector. 

Mmusinyane explained that between May 2021 and November 2022, 25 properties were put up for bid, with 10 new leases being awarded to companies 100% owned by historically disadvantaged individuals.

“All 10 awards were made to companies that are 100% owned by historically disadvantaged individuals. On the beachfront in particular, properties that have been affected are Circus, Bike and Bean, and Minitown.”

Mmusinyane added that the historic building in which Joe Cools and other eateries are housed, will be upgraded soon by a developer, who will then sublet the space to suitable tenants. 

He assured the public that a fair, equitable, and transparent process was followed as stipulated in Section 14(5) of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA). 

“This section mandates that the disposal, including leasing of municipal properties must adhere to principles of fairness, equity, transparency, and competitiveness in line with the City’s Supply Chain Management Policy (Section 111 of the MFMA). 

“Renewing the leases without an open, competitive process would have violated these principles, as well as Section 217(1) of the Constitution, which upholds the same standards for public procurement. Therefore, lease renewals could not be granted without contravening the law,” he explained. – SAnews.gov.za

Innovation in the development of new, competitive furniture products will come to the fore at the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition’s (dtic) Furniture Design Competition Awards ceremony this afternoon.

Friday’s award ceremony will take place at the Kyalami Grand Prix and International Expo Centre in Sandton, Gauteng.

“The competition has been established to create an opportunity to promote innovation in the development of new, competitive furniture products and to contribute towards skills development initiatives. Participants include students from local academic institutions who are studying towards related fields and other emerging furniture designers,” the department said ahead of the ceremony.

The Acting Deputy Director-General at the dtic, Dr Tebogo Makube, said the annual competition complements the development of design courses and design workshops.

“The Furniture Industry Masterplan adopted in 2021 identifies the shortage of high-level skills in the furniture industry such as design and skilled artisans in furniture manufacturing as a major concern. This limits South African furniture manufacturers’ capacity to supply world-class products in line with both domestic and global market demand, and thus negatively affects the industry’s competitiveness,” Makube said.

He added that design can also be used as a creative instrument that will link industry players’ creativity and innovative products.  

“It is thus possible to position the local industry as the producer of high-value niche furniture products that are globally competitive based on quality and/or differentiated designs. This requires a concerted effort on the part of the public and private sectors to develop programs that address the challenges that constrain the industry from achieving potential growth levels and significantly raise the levels of competitiveness,” he explained.

The competition is a partnership between the dtic, the South African Furniture Initiative (SAFI), Industrial Development Corporation, Proudly South African, Furntech, and other industry players such as Mecad Solidworks, PG Bison, Lewis Group, Zaptly,  and Rubio Monocoat, will also sponsor competition prizes. -SAnews.gov.za

South African journalists/media have been invited to submit their entries for the 2025 SADC Media Awards competition.

The SADC Media Awards competition is open to journalists from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Member States. 

The awards were established in 1996 to recognise best media work in disseminating information on SADC to support the process of regional co-operation and integration in the region. 

To promote regional integration and cooperation, the awards aim to recognise excellence in journalism in the area of print, photo, television, radio as well as to encourage media practitioners in member states to cover issues pertaining to the region.

The first prize winners will receive their prizes and certificates on the margins of the SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government that will take place in August 2025.

The first prize winner in each category receives US$2500 and the runner-up receives US$1000.

Tributes pour in for nuclear scientist Senamile Masango

The Chairperson of the Human Resource Development Council (HRDC), Deputy President Paul Mashatile, has described the late pioneering nuclear scientist, Senamile Masango, as someone who was a beacon of hope for many young people, especially women. 

The Deputy President paid tribute to Masango, after receiving the sad news of the passing of South Africa’s first Black nuclear scientist, and a member of the HRDC, on Sunday, 9 February 2025.

Masango, who hailed from Nongoma in northern KwaZulu-Natal, passed away in hospital following a short illness. She was 37 years old.

“Her passion for developing critical skills among the population and women in science, in particular, will be sorely missed,” the Deputy President said in a statement on Monday. 

Masango, a PhD candidate, was a globally recognised nuclear scientist, esteemed energy leader and pioneering entrepreneur. 

As a trailblazer in the field of nuclear science, she was widely respected for her groundbreaking research particularly at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN). 

Her achievements were a source of pride, as she became the first African woman to conduct experiments at CERN.

Masango’s brilliance gained international recognition when she received the prestigious Women in Science Award in 2022. 

The Deputy President’s Office noted that her influence extended beyond her scientific accomplishments, as she is also a visionary entrepreneur. 

She served as the founder and Executive Chair of Mphathisithele Consulting, an energy consulting firm.

She also served on several public sector science bodies including the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa) and recently became a member of the HRDC. 

Due to her groundbreaking work in empowering women through science, she has received numerous local and international honours. 

These include being recognised as one of the 50 Global Inspirational Women of 2020 and being named a finalist for the Women in Tech Global Awards in 2021.

Despite her youth, Masango made a significant contribution to the advancement of science and the development of essential skills for the country.

“On behalf of government and the HRDC, we wish to convey our deepest condolences to the Masango family, her immediate community, and the science fraternity at large. May her soul rest in eternal peace,” said the Deputy President. 

Her establishment of Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) and her advocacy for greater representation and opportunities for women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields have made a significant impact.

The Office of His Majesty the King Misuzulu KaZwelithini of the Zulu nation, has also paid his tribute to the renowned nuclear scientist.

Masango came from rural Nongoma, which is the traditional seat of the Zulu monarchy in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

“On behalf of the Zulu nation, I offer my deepest sympathies to your family. May you find comfort in the knowledge that her impact will continue to inspire many. We stand with you in mourning, and we pray that her soul rests in eternal peace,” the King said on Monday. 

Former Public Protector and the Law Faculty Trust Chair in Social Justice and Law Professor at Stellenbosch University, Professor Thuli Madonsela said she was “exceedingly” shocked and saddened by the news of the passing of Masango. 

Madonsela said Masango was a friend of the Centre for Social Justice at Stellenbosch University and a tireless supporter of the #Action4Inclusion initiative aimed at eradicating student debt as a barrier to higher education.

“Heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues. May her kind soul rest in peace,” Madonsela said. – SAnews.gov.za

Deputy President Paul Mashatile has praised the winners of the annual Ubuntu Awards as a source of inspiration for active citizenry.

The Deputy President delivered the keynote address at the annual Ubuntu Awards held on Saturday evening at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

The awards – hosted by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation – recognise South Africans and companies that proudly fly the country’s flag high on global platforms.

“As has become custom, we have gathered in this fashion again during the week of Parliament's opening to give due recognition to our patriots who fly the South African flag high on the world’s great stages. These patriots represent our country positively in various disciplines through their good deeds, talent, hard work, and determination towards excellence.

“The Ubuntu Awards represent a gesture through which our government aims to encourage and promote active citizenry. We do so because we believe the world views South Africa through the deeds of its people,” he said.

The 2025 recipients of the awards are:

“In addition to creating opportunities for growth and prosperity through their various efforts, these individuals' vision, leadership, and entrepreneurial spirit inspire others to follow in their footsteps. 

“In other words, the individuals we will be honouring tonight, regardless of their field of expertise, serve as cultural ambassadors who represent a diverse tapestry of South African heritage and identity,” Deputy President Mashatile said.

G20 values

This year’s Ubuntu Awards ceremony was held under the theme “South Africa G20 Presidency: Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability”, aligning with South Africa’s G20 Presidency this year.

Deputy President Mashatile said South Africa’s G20 Presidency offered an opportunity to “further the interests of poorer countries”. 

“Our goals…include promoting more equality in international governance and elevating Africa's development agenda in ways that are more meaningful. These values are the pillars upon which we can build a brighter, more inclusive future for all, not just in South Africa or Africa but across the world.

“Our goal at the G20 Summit is to increase the focus on strengthening unity and ensuring no nation or individual is left behind in the global growth race. Mindful of the centrality of the United Nations agenda, South Africa is certain that the G20 has a critical role to play in expediting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals,” he said.

The Deputy President acknowledged that global challenges continue to mount for all nations. 

“These issues include geopolitical tension, economic inequality, climate change, humanitarian disasters, underdevelopment, inequality, poverty, hunger, and unemployment.

“South Africa will work with G20 countries and build partnerships in all sectors of society to harness the global community's desire and capacity to solve these issues,” he committed.

Turning back to the awards nominees and recipients, the Deputy President described them as a source of inspiration. 

“While we only recognise a few individuals today, we are aware that thousands of people around the country have represented South Africa in a range of activities over the last year, including research, education and training, sports, arts and culture, business, and corporate affairs.

“Together, we can amplify the voice of South Africa on the global stage, promoting a message of inclusivity, diversity, and progress.

Deputy President Paul Mashatile has urged communities to join forces with government to tackle the factors leading to the troubling rate of school dropouts.

“We must work together to identify solutions to tackle teenage pregnancy, alcohol and substance abuse and addiction, financial difficulties, peer pressure, and academic obstacles, which remain predominant factors contributing to children prematurely leaving school,” Deputy President Mashatile said. 

Speaking at the annual bursary awards ceremony in Alexandra, Johannesburg on Friday, the Deputy President cited a new report indicating that although South Africa’s matriculation pass rate reached a record high of 87.3% in 2024, the retention rate for learners fell to 64.5%. 

This decline, he said, raises serious concerns regarding the issue of school dropouts.

According to the Zero Dropout Campaign’s latest research, despite this improvement and South Africa’s large investment in the Department of Basic Education, about 40% of learners who enrol in Grade 1 will exit the schooling system before finishing matric.

The Deputy President stressed that educating a child is a multifaceted process and everyone should play a role, including families, communities, schools and other various support systems. 

The Deputy President was speaking at the Vincent Tshabalala Education Trust Annual Bursary Awards, where he honoured top-achieving learners, as well as their schools and teachers from the Matric Class of 2024.

Deouty President Mashatile is the Chairperson of the Vincent Tshabalala Education Trust and currently serves as its patron. 

This non-profit organisation (NPO) has awarded bursaries to numerous learners and university students, many of whom have made significant contributions to the development and growth of the Alexandra community and beyond. 

Today, the NPO awarded a total of 611 bursaries, of which 348 went to females and 263 to males, with 61 being awarded last year.

This year, over 52 students will be beneficiaries, thanks to the support of the organisation’s donors and partners. 

In addition to bursaries, the organisation has awarded prizes to 810 learners in Grades 10 and 11 for their academic achievements, encouraging them to continue their studies and strive for excellence. 

The NPO also hosts career guidance workshops and leadership development programmes. 

The programmes have been running for years in honour of the late Vincent Tshabalala, who lost his life in a confrontation with the apartheid police in Alexandra in 1985.

This year marks 40 years since he passed away, a few years before the year South Africa won victory over the apartheid.  

“To honour our brother and comrade, a college was built—deservedly, where he took his last breath. This college serves as a memory of Vincent’s journey and as a beacon of hope for the Vincents of this generation. 

“Comrade Vincent had a deep appreciation for education and a strong desire to see all young people acquire an education of the highest possible standard. He believed that education is the greatest equaliser.” 

He said he believed that the late comrade would have been pleased with the Class of 2024’s performance, which made history with a record-breaking pass rate of 87.3%. 

“The continuous improvement in student performance year after year, particularly within Black communities, highlights significant progress in our efforts to dismantle the structures and legacy of apartheid in education.”

The Deputy President committed to his late friend’s vision of providing financial aid to deserving students, ensuring they receive a high-quality education that enables them to realise their full potential. – SAnews.gov.za

Deputy President Paul Mashatile will on Friday honour top-achieving learners, as well as their schools and teachers from the Matric Class of 2024, at the Vincent Tshabalala Education Trust Annual Bursary Awards.

The Deputy President has served as the Chairperson of the Vincent Tshabalala Education Trust since its establishment in 2004 and currently holds the position of patron. 

This non-profit organisation (NPO) has awarded bursaries to numerous learners and university students, many of whom have made significant contributions to the development and growth of the Alexandra community and beyond.

The Deputy President’s late friend and comrade, Vincent Tshabalala, was a founder of the Alexandra Youth Congress (AYCO) and a member of the ANC’s military wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe. 

Tshabalala lost his life in a confrontation with the apartheid police in Alexandra in 1985.

Today, hundreds of learners from Alexandra high schools have been awarded bursaries. Some of those who have completed their studies are now chartered accountants, engineers, information technology specialists, lawyers, lecturers, and auditors.

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has thanked police officers for the sacrifices they make to safeguard the country.

The country on Monday marked National Police Day.

"You leave your families to serve the greater family that is our beloved country. Your sacrifices do not go unnoticed. On behalf of the government of the Republic of South Africa and the people you so diligently protect, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you.

"The parade today is a symbol of the discipline, strength, and capabilities of the SAPS [South African Police Service]. It is a reminder to the people of South Africa that their police service is committed to excellence," the Minister said when delivering his keynote address at the National Police Day celebrations at Kings Park Athletics Stadium in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, on Monday.

The day brought together men and women in blue to recognise and celebrate the critical role played by law enforcement in upholding justice and maintaining public order.

Approved in 2005 by Cabinet, National Police Day also serves as a platform to strengthen the bond between police officers and the communities they serve.

National Commissioner of the Police, General Fannie Masemola, also paid tribute to police officers.

"When we reflect, as the SAPS management, we see a trail of momentous sacrifices made. We see you deprive yourselves of sleep, family time and social life patrolling the streets of South Africa day and night.

“We see you maintaining public order, we see you protecting the residents of South Africa and their property, and we see you putting an effort to prevent, combat and investigate crime in service of our country," said General Masemola.

This year's National Police Day programme included a ceremonial parade, displays and exhibitions to showcase the capabilities and expertise within the SAPS.

National Police Day underscores SAPS's commitment to professionalising the service, promoting accountability, and ensuring a safer South Africa for all.

The event was preceded by a series of activities, which included the National Golf Day, where more than R11 million was raised on Friday towards the South African Police Service Education Trust (SAPSET).

Also, the SAPS hosted its 10th edition National Excellence Awards on Sunday, where police officers and support personnel were awarded for going above and beyond the call of duty in the last year.

The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, has congratulated the creators of the short film, The Last Ranger.

The film has been nominated in the Best Live Action Short Film category of the 97th Academy Awards. 

George, who recently attended a ranger course at the Southern African Wildlife College in order to better understand the work of rangers, highlighted how timeous the Oscar nomination comes as the department intensifies the fight against wildlife poaching.

“I wish to congratulate the team behind this important body of work on choosing to highlight the plight of our rangers, a community of real-life heroes who are often overlooked. I believe that this film helps tell our rangers’ story and as a result of this nomination, rangers will garner more local and international support for their work,” said the Minister.

The Last Ranger short film explores the theme of rhino poaching and conservation efforts. 

Set against the spectacular landscapes of the Eastern Cape, The Last Ranger tells the story of a young Xhosa girl and a female game ranger who fight to save rhinos from poachers. 

The film exposes both the horrors of rhino poaching and the socio-economic complexities facing local communities. The film was directed by Cindy Lee and was locally produced by Star Films and internationally, by Kindred Films.

The Minister said the film showed the urgent need to address the resource constraints facing local rangers. 

“South Africa’s dedicated rangers are doing incredible work despite being massively under-resourced, and the government is committed to ensure that they have the tools and support needed to carry out their duties effectively.”

George called on the local and international community to come together against poaching criminal syndicates.

"We hope that The Last Ranger not only showcases the high calibre of our South African creatives, but also showcases the beauty of South Africa’s natural heritage, including our wildlife. We will be watching the Oscars with great anticipation on 2 March 2025 in the hopes that they will bring the Oscar home," said the Minister.

He encouraged all South Africans and international supporters of rangers to go out and watch the movie in their multitudes and to also experience the beauty and majesty of South Africa’s national parks by visiting the country's wildlife reserves. – SAnews.gov.za

50 bursaries for deserving students

Deputy President Paul Mashatile has announced that government will provide 50 bursaries for deserving students who have been accepted into public institutions of higher learning, including Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges. 

These bursaries will be offered through the National Skills Fund, which collaborates with the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

“The National Skills Fund supports this initiative through the department and aims to bridge the gap in access to education, particularly for the top students we are celebrating today,” Deputy President Mashatile explained. 

The country’s second-in-command announced this during his keynote address at the KwaMpumuza 4th Annual Matric Excellence Awards ceremony at Sweetwaters, uMgungundlovu District, Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal.

The awards ceremony celebrates the academic achievements of the top Matric Class of 2024 from 16 schools within the Mpumuza Traditional Authority.

The Blackburn Sports Ground in Sweetwaters was filled with the Matric Class of 2025, along with 329 primary school learners who received uniforms. 

The event honoured high-achieving schools, teachers, and students from 11 schools in the KwaMpumuza area.

“Having a matric certificate means that you have gone through many obstacles since primary school and have worked hard to make the most of your future. You are a great source of pride for your families, schools, and the entire Mpumuza community,” he told those who have passed Grade 12.

He also thanked the educators and parents for their support.

“Your determination and sacrifice are not taken for granted, may you one day, through these children, enjoy the fruits of your labour.

“To those of you who are going to university, remember that you are now in charge of your own life,” he added. 

He encouraged those heading to university to do their best to secure a brighter and more prosperous future.

“A university degree or qualification is a treasure that no one can take away from you, and it is a key to many closed doors.

“I encourage you today to dream big dreams. Do not be discouraged by your background, and the challenges that you have gone through. You deserve the best that life has to offer and as a government, we are determined to support you to make your dreams possible.” 

Focusing on the current matriculants, he encouraged them to study diligently and resist distractions like peer pressure.

“I urge all of you to stay away from alcohol, drugs, and other harmful behaviours including violence of any form, early entry into sexual behaviours leading to teenage pregnancy, and STDs [sexually transmitted diseases].” 

He also took the time to speak to the parents of children who failed and reminded them that every setback is a setup for a stronger comeback.

“Your love and encouragement can make all the difference in helping them find their way forward.

“Whether they pass or not, every learner is part of our shared future, and they all deserve our love, guidance, and unwavering belief in their potential.” 

He concluded his speech by referencing former State President Nelson Mandela, who famously stated, “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world“. – SAnews.gov.za

Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie says he has received “with great pride and a sense of expectation” news of the Academy Award nomination for the South African film The Last Ranger.

Directed by Cindy Lee, the film has been nominated in the category of Best Live Action Short Film at the 97th Academy Awards, to be held in March 2025.

According to the department, this remarkable isiXhosa film, inspired by true events in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, tells the compelling story of Thandi, a rhino that miraculously survived a poaching attack at the Kariega Game Reserve, and the courageous woman who fought to protect these iconic animals against all odds.

“The Last Ranger is a powerful tribute to the resilience of our wildlife and the unwavering dedication of conservationists who work tirelessly to safeguard our natural heritage. Featuring stellar performances by Avumile Qongqo, Liyabona Mroqoza and Makhaola Ndebele, and written by David Lee, Darwin Shaw and Will Hawks, this production stands as a testament to South Africa’s rich storytelling and cinematic excellence,” said the department.

The film’s ongoing success, having already won Best Short Narrative at the 2024 Pan African Film Festival (PAFF), is a clear indication of its impact and brilliance.

The Minister said he was confident that it would continue to make an impact on the global stage, "and we eagerly await the Oscar ceremony on 2 March 2025, hopeful for yet another triumph".
