Call for Entries: The Earthshot Prize 2025 – Seeking Groundbreaking Solutions to Restore Our Planet

Following a record-breaking year for nominations, and a historic first awards ceremony on the African continent, The Earthshot Prize (TEP) is officially open for entries for its 2025 cohort and MultiChoice (www.Multichoice.com) is proud to once again be an official Africa nominator for TEP. 

TEP seeks innovative solutions across five critical Earthshots: Protect and Restore Nature; Clean Our Air; Revive Our Oceans; Build a Waste-Free World; and Fix Our Climate. 
This year's cycle saw an unprecedented surge in nominations, with over 2,000 entries received from 139 countries, demonstrating a growing global momentum for environmental innovation.  

The star-studded awards ceremony, held in Cape Town, South Africa was broadcast live to millions of people across the continent by MultiChoice, the official African broadcast partner of TEP.  The ceremony celebrated several African-led initiatives, including: 

  • Green Africa Youth Organisation (GAYO) (Ghana): Winner of the Clean Our Air Earthshot, GAYO is tackling air pollution with its innovative “Zero Waste Model”. 
  • Keep IT Cool (Kenya): Winner of the Build a Waste-Free World Earthshot, Keep IT Cool is revolutionising food preservation for small-scale farmers and fishers with its sustainable refrigeration systems. 

These winners, along with all other TEP recipients, exemplify the power of local solutions to address global challenges and contribute to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Each winner receives £1 million in prize money to scale their impactful solutions. 
 
TEP invites individuals, communities, businesses, and organisations across Africa and beyond to submit their groundbreaking ideas and technologies that can accelerate the transition to a sustainable future. The Prize seeks solutions that are:

  • Impactful: Demonstrating tangible positive effects on the environment. 
  • Inspiring: Motivating others to act and join the global movement for change. 
  • Inclusive: Benefitting communities and promoting equitable access to resources.

Celebrating the Trailblazers Shaping Africa’s Tech Future

Africa Tech Festival (www.AfricaTechFestival.com) 2024 wrapped up last week, marking the most successful edition in the event's 27-year history. Organised by Informa Tech, the event is Africa's most extensive showcase of enterprise tech innovation, bringing together influential founders, business leaders, policymakers, investors, and startups.

Building on the momentum of the event's first two days, the final day kicked off with an opening address by Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, City of Cape Town. Commenting on the host city's standing as a leading tech hub hosting 51% of South Africa's startups, he emphasised Cape Town's focus on skills development in AI and tech in particular, reiterating his excitement at “making Cape Town a focal point for African innovation and setting an example of how tech can empower communities and social change.”

LeadersIn Africa Summit

Preceding the main event, the by-invitation LeadersIn Africa Summit was an exclusive VIP series of executive discussions designed to facilitate actionable dialogue between 100 of the continent's most influential tech players. Panel sessions, fireside chats, networking events, and roundtables provided a platform for sharing insights and collaborating on solutions to Africa's tech challenges. Topics ranged from emerging technologies to AI for startups, ESG, regulatory frameworks, fundraising strategies, and support for founders and investors.

Skills development and knowledge sharing

The final day of Africa Tech Festival 2024 also featured several keynote fireside discussions across the various event streams. Skills development was a theme of the day, including a masterclass session on AI content creation, a security fundamentals certification training session, and a technical workshop where participants worked in groups to develop scaling strategies for AI pilot projects.

Key Highlights

The USAID Young African Leaders Initiative(YALI) hosted the YALI Alumni Expo and Trade Show running alongside Africa Tech Festival. The YALI Expo  connected and celebrated YALI alumni making positive change in their communities by creating  these networking opportunities and showcasing innovations for sustainable impact.

One of the key topics focused on the gender gap and a panel discussion on day 4 centred around   Empowering Female Founders: Narrowing the Gender Gap in Venture Capital.  The challenge that female-founded companies face is that only 16% of tech funding and 8% of total funding go to these companies due to bias, lack of female representation among venture capital decision-makers or insufficient diversity in teams and investment criteria. It was proposed that female representation in venture capital leadership needed to be increased, more training and support was essential to encourage female founders to build networks and strengthen pitch preparation and business strategies.

The Africa Tech Festival Awards took place on the penultimate  night,  at the Bay Hotel in Camps Bay, Cape Town. The awards celebrated the  exceptional technological advancements and expertise across the continent and highlighted the pioneering work that is transforming lives and industries across Africa, inspiring future innovation and growth. Some of the winners included:

  • Innovation for Impact: WIOCC Group 
  • CXO of the Year: Patrick Benon, Orange Cameroon 
  • Changing Lives Award: Orange Burkina Faso 
  • Creative Visionary Award: Brighton Mhlongo 
  • AIConics Award: GRIT - Gender Rights in Tech

​Last night, the five 2024 Earthshot Prize Winners were announced at a star-studded awards ceremony in Cape Town, South Africa, hosted by Emmy, Grammy and Tony Award winner Billy Porter and award-winning television presenter Bonang Matheba. The 2024 Winners, selected from this year's 15 Earthshot Finalists, will be awarded £1 million each to accelerate and scale their game-changing environmental solutions.

Following a rigorous selection process focused on identifying impactful, inspiring and inclusive environmental solutions, the five Winners are:

  • Fix Our Climate: Advanced Thermovoltaic Systems
  • Revive Our Oceans: High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People
  • Build a Waste-Free World: Keep IT Cool
  • Protect and Restore Nature: Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative
  • Clean Our Air: Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO)

 Speaking during the Awards Ceremony, Prince William said:

WINNER for Fix Our Climate:

Advanced Thermovoltaic Systems (ATS) has developed a simple, safe and scalable technology to capture waste heat and convert it into electricity, offering a game-changing solution for heavy industries like cement and steel production. These industries require extremely high temperatures, which generate vast amounts of waste heat that is typically lost. ATS's technologies have the potential to save gigatonnes of CO2.

“At ATS, we are proud to lead the way in converting this waste into clean, usable electricity.  Winning the 2024 Earthshot Prize underscores the transformative potential of our technology. Tonight is a key moment for us as we focus on scaling up production in larger manufacturing facilities.” – Kelly Adams, CEO, Advanced Thermovoltaic Systems.

WINNER for Revive Our Oceans:

A groundbreaking alliance of 119 countries with the ambitious goal to protect 30% of land and oceans by 2030, High Ambition Coalition identifies technical, financial and knowledge gaps and connects governments with technical assistance and funding. They've already achieved a major milestone with the adoption of the “30×30” target in the 2022 UN Global Biodiversity Framework.

WINNER for Build a Waste-Free World:

Nominated by: Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation, Katapult Ocean

Keep IT Cool (KIC) addresses the challenge of food spoilage by providing sustainable, localized refrigeration systems that help small farmers and fishers preserve their produce. By installing solar-powered cold storage units where fish are landed, KIC significantly reduces spoilage and waste by ensuring the catch stays fresh and managing its transport to market. With plans to grow into East Africa and beyond, KIC is now working to expand their activities in poultry, fruit and vegetables and aims to bring their solution to more communities.

Francis Nderitu, Founder and Managing Director of Keep IT Cool said, “We are on a mission to revolutionise the food supply chain in East Africa. We are grateful for the recognition from The Earthshot Prize, and it is an important milestone for Keep IT Cool. We will continue to enhance market access, reduce waste and build climate resilience for small-scale fish and poultry farmers throughout the region.”

WINNER for Protect and Restore Nature:

Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative (https://apo-opa.co/3NWG3Zk), Kazakhstan
Nominated by: United Nations Environment Programme

Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative has achieved the almost unprecedented feat of saving the critically endangered Saiga antelope from extinction. This mission has grown into one of the world's largest conservation projects and is focused on protecting and restoring Kaakhstan's Golden Steppe, one of the world's least protected natural ecosystems.

Vera Voronova, Executive Director, Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative said, “We are thrilled to be receiving the 2024 Earthshot Prize for Protect and Restore Nature. Altyn Dala demonstrates that when governments and civil society work together with a shared vision, we can achieve remarkable results. The restoration of the Saiga antelope population and the revival of the Central Asian steppe are not just triumphs for wildlife but for the local communities that depend on these ecosystems.”

WINNER for Clean Our Air:

GAYO, Green Africa Youth Organization (https://apo-opa.co/3NVrpSe), Ghana
Nominated by: Clean Air Fund

A youth-led, gender-balanced organisation, GAYO uses its “Zero Waste Model” to drive behavioural change in waste management practices across Africa that cut greenhouse gas emissions and particle pollution, while also bringing additional income to communities. Their goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and particle pollution in Ghana by 70%, compared to open burning, as well as divert a total of 4,000 tonnes of waste by 2030. GAYO's plans to scale would make them the leading model for waste management on the continent.

Desmond Alugnoa, Co-Founder of the Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) said, “We are incredibly honored to be winning the Prize, which is a testament to the power of community-driven solutions and the importance of empowering those most affected by climate challenges. Our work in Ghana demonstrates that sustainable waste management isn't just a possibility—it's a necessity. The recognition by The Earthshot Prize fuels our commitment to replicating these models across Africa, proving that local solutions can have global impacts.”

The five Winners of the 2024 Prize cohort were selected by Prince William and The Earthshot Prize Council, a diverse group of experts, advocates and individuals dedicated to championing urgent and innovative action to protect our planet. The Earthshot Prize Council is chaired by The Earthshot Prize Board of Trustees Chair, Dame Christiana Figueres, architect of the Paris Agreement.

Members of The Earthshot Prize Council include: His Royal Highness Prince William, Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah, José Andrés, Sir David Attenborough, Cate Blanchett, Ernest Gibson, Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim, Wanjira Mathai, Stella McCartney, Nemonte Nenquimo, Luisa Neubauer, Indra Nooyi, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Naoko Yamazaki.

In addition to the five £1 million prizes supporting the growth of Winners' solutions, each of the 15 Earthshot Prize Finalists will receive dedicated mentorship, resources and technical support through the year-long Earthshot Prize Fellowship Programme.

Afreximbank President Professor Benedict Oramah Receives Prestigious Mohammed Barkindo Lifetime Achievement Award

Professor Benedict Okey Oramah, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors at African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) (www.Afreximbank.com), has been awarded the prestigious Mohammed S. Barkindo Lifetime Achievement Award at the African Energy Awards, held on the sidelines of the African Energy Week (AEW) 2024: Invest in African Energy conference, happening between 4-8 November in Cape Town, South Africa.  

The award, named in honour of the former Secretary-General of OPEC, the late Dr Mohammed Barkindo, recognizes individuals who have made exceptional and lasting contributions to Africa's oil, gas, and energy sectors. This honour represents the highest accolade in African energy, awarded to individuals whose work has had a transformative impact on the continent's energy sector. Notable past recipient of the Mohammed S. Barkindo Lifetime Award in 2023 is Keith Hill, former President and CEO of Africa Oil Corp. 

For over three decades, Prof. Oramah has played a critical role in driving sustainable development across Africa by channelling essential funding into major oil, gas, and infrastructure projects. Since assuming leadership of Afreximbank in 2015, he has pioneered innovative financing structures that have democratised energy access and accelerated industrialization and the growth of Africa's strategically critical energy sector. 

Under Prof. Oramah's leadership, Afreximbank has made substantial contributions to the growth of Africa's energy sector. Under his stewardship, the Afreximbank has facilitated the mobilization of over USD 70 bn to support Africa's energy sector. Included in this is more than USD 5bn for refineries in Nigeria, Angola and Senegal, to further Africa's refined product independence and reduce the continent's Foreign Exchange drain.  

In Nigeria, Afreximbank now acts as Adviser and Settlement Bank for NGN denominated crude sales to Nigerian refineries. Replicated across the oil producing states in Africa, this will save several USD 100mn per annum in transactional charges alone. Ranking among President Oramah's most significant achievements is the historic signing of the Establishment Agreement and the Charter of the Africa Energy Bank (“AEB”) in Egypt in June 2024, in partnership with the African Petroleum Producers Organization (APPO). This landmark initiative aims to mobilize funding to support investments across Africa's entire energy system, aligning with the continent's energy needs and its environmental sustainability goals. 

Professor Oramah has led the energy transition agenda through the Bank's support in renewable energy transactions including, but not limited to, the EUR1.3 bn ECA import facility Project Gleam in support of the import of sonar panels for rural electrification in Angola, the EUR 147mn Government of Cameroon solar power project and the US$363 million Gasmeth Energy Rwanda gas extraction and processing project.  

Significantly, the majority of the above-mentioned transactions received numerous industry awards for their impact on the continent, their complexity and their unique structures.   

Prior to joining Afreximbank, Professor Oramah distinguished himself in international trade finance and development. Beginning his career at the Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM), he played an instrumental role in shaping Nigeria's export development strategies. Prof Oramah holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria.  

Acknowledging the award, Prof. Oramah commented: 

“It is a great honour to be awarded the Mohammed S. Barkindo Lifetime Achievement Award. Whilst a great honour for me personally, this award reflects the work and dedication of many others, including my colleagues at Afreximbank and our various partners. Deputy President Mashatile to attend Earthshot Prize Awards

Deputy President Paul Mashatile is expected to attend the 4th Annual Earthshot Prize Awards ceremony, this evening, in Cape Town. 

The Deputy President will be attending Wednesday’s ceremony at the invitation of Britain’s Prince William and on behalf of President Cyril Ramaphosa. 

This marks the first time the event will be held in South Africa.

Started by Prince William in 2020, the prize supports sustainable, eco-friendly projects from around the world. Five winners each receive £ 1 million.

According to the Deputy President’s Office, the prize is the most prestigious global prize for the environment in history, despite only being in its fourth year.

Every year, the organisers search the globe for game-changing innovations that will help repair the planet and award the winners of the best five solutions with money to scale their work. 

The initiative exists to discover, spotlight and help grow innovative solutions that are working to repair and regenerate our planet.

Last year, Earthshot welcomed its first South African finalist, ABALOBI, whose technology is making it easier for small fishing communities to monitor fish populations, improve market access, and recognise these communities as stewards of oceans. 

“It is of particular importance that the focus of the Earthshot Prize Awards is on the impact of climate change on Africa and the innovative solutions found on the African continent to mitigate the impact of climate change and environmental degradation.”

Meanwhile, the Deputy President said it was an “honour” to welcome the Prince of Wales to South Africa, highlighting the unique relationship the Royal Family has with the country. 

“The Prince of Wales continues to show his steadfast support and commitment to campaigning for the environment and advocating for the protection of our planet. These prestigious awards play a critical role in supporting and celebrating small enterprises that make a huge difference,” the Deputy President added.

Tuesday’s meeting between the President and The Prince of Wales will take place at the Official Residence of the President in Cape Town.

The Day 2 of the conference will have five key parallel medical and scientific sessions, covering topics such as oncology, diabetes and hypertension, fertility and reproductive care, and medical capacity building in other specialties like respiratory care, acute care, emergency pediatric and neonatal care, and more. Additionally, a community awareness session, Merck Foundation Health Media Training, will be conducted for African journalists. SA's cruise season officially underway

The docking of the World Odyssey at the Port of Cape Town signifies the beginning of South Africa’s cruise season, which will see the docking and sailing of 268 passenger liners at the commercial seaports operated by Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA). 

The vessel arrived on 22 October 2024 at the port renowned for being a popular stopover for cruise liners and was recently voted as Africa’s Leading Cruise Port in the 31st Annual World Travel Awards.

Sailing under the flag of the Bahamas, the World Odyssey cruise liner brought approximately 538 international tourists onboard, paving the way for a projected 130 000 tourists anticipated to visit Cape Town during this cruise season.

The 268 scheduled passenger liners, represents an increase of 29% from 207 call-ins in the previous year. 

These vessels will pull along at seven South African commercial seaports, with Cape Town set to welcome 88 call-ins, 47 for Durban, 43 for Gqeberha, 27 for Mossel Bay, five for Saldanha, 14 each for Richards Bay and East London.

“The upsurge in the anticipated vessel call-ins this season supports the strategic positioning of South Africa’s ports as key drivers of economic growth and gateways for international trade. 

“The cruise liner segment is one of the fastest-growing contributors to the country's GDP through tourism revenue. As TNPA, we look forward to collaborating with cruise tourism stakeholders to support the growth of the economy. 

“Building on the success of the previous cruise season, TNPA continues to provide reliable marine services as well as creating berth capacity to enable an efficient cruise vessel service,” said Advocate Phyllis Difeto, the TNPA Acting Chief Executive.

TNPA anticipates that more vessels will be confirmed as the cruise season progresses.

TNPA is responsible for the safe, effective, and efficient economic functioning of the national port system, which it manages in a landlord capacity.

It provides port infrastructure and marine services at the eight commercial seaports in South Africa – Richards Bay, Durban, Saldanha, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London, Mossel Bay and Ngqura.

The night will include extraordinary storytelling and musical performances to celebrate the work of global environmental innovators and spotlight the creativity and innovation across African countries.

A Bloemfontein-based entrepreneur, who established a healthy alternative to coffee, is revolutionising the agro-processing industry through her thriving business.  

Chantelle de Bruyn (34) is the owner of Buttercup Farmhouse, a business that she registered in 2019 with initial plans to manufacture vegetable spices.  

The business is currently selling its signature Cucurbita Latte (vegetable coffee made from butternut) and has plans to expand to produce supplement shakes, snack bars, vegetable ice cream, and a tea range. 

She is equipped with product development skills acquired through a food science course she completed through the United States (US) Embassy and Consulates in South Africa. 

She also completed the Raymond Ackerman Academy of Entrepreneurial Development Programme at the Johannesburg Business School. 

“This skill has been instrumental in creating innovation and ensuring that the taste and health benefits of our products align with what our customers need through the value chain,” she explained. 

De Bruyn has also partnered with the University of the Free State, which is assisting her with research and product development for her products. 

The business currently employs 11 workers, including four permanent and seven part-time employees. It hopes to create more job opportunities as it expands its product offering. 

“Currently, you can buy the products at Food Lovers Market stores in the Western Cape, Centurion in Gauteng, and Ballito in KwaZulu-Natal. Online orders will be available in November,” she said. 

She has plans to reach global consumers and said the business has received support from the Free State Provincial Government since its inception and received a R50 000 Grant from the National Development Agency (NYDA) to purchase its first equipment. 

The Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs has also assisted the business to purchase additional equipment and allowed it to participate in various trade shows. 

She added that it also receives support from global investors including interest from the African Women in Trade Group in Germany, who are exploring the opportunity to distribute the products in the United Kingdom and in the US.

Achievements 
Buttercup Farmhouse already has a few accolades under its belt. In 2022, it received an award for being the Top Youth Agro Processor from the National Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development. 

In the same year, De Bruyn was crowned the best agro developer and most innovative business through the Cwena awards. 
The business was also the Overall Winner in Business of the Year by Action Coach for 2021/2022. 

Buttercup also won a business plan competition with the American Women Academy with its U.S. Agency for International Development and, sponsored by the US Embassy in 2021, won the Standard Bank Top Women Top 5 Award in 2022, and the Most Innovative Business Award through the South African Awards in 2023. 

She was also the runner-up in the Forty over 40 Awards in 2022 and won second place in the Seeds of Change competition in 2023. 

“We have also gained recognition from the Summer Fancy Food Show in New York in 2023,” she explained.

Farming background 

De Bruyn is also a small-scale farmer who specialises in crop production. 

“I have always loved farming, and it’s a vital part of my business. I started farming in 2015 when the Agri-Parks were established in the Free State and I served on the executive committee where I represented youth in agriculture. 

“Today we grow crops like butternut that are essential to our vegetable coffee production and have partnered with external farmers to help us grow our butternuts, farming allows us to maintain high-quality ingredients for our products,” she explained.

President seeks better prospects for matric Class of 2024

President Cyril Ramaphosa has in his weekly newsletter, extended his best wishes to learners writing their matric exams, acknowledging the hard work, resilience and perseverance they have shown in preparing for this crucial milestone.

Today marks the commencement of the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams, with over 880 000 candidates across South Africa sitting for their matric exams. 

“On behalf of the government, I wish all our learners well at this challenging and exciting time. The Class of 2024 entered Grade 8 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and have had to receive considerable learning support to overcome the resultant gaps in their learning,” the President said on Monday.

The first citizen praised the students who are rewriting their exams through the Department of Basic Education (DBE) Second Chance Programme, commending their determination to improve their academic outcomes. 

In the weeks leading up to the exams, learners across the country have participated in extra lessons, engaged in revision with educators, and attended learner support programmes facilitated by provincial education departments. 

The President highlighted the collaboration between the DBE, provincial education authorities, school governing bodies, and families in equipping learners with the resources needed for success.

“I commend our nation’s educators for their commitment to our matriculants as they reach the end of their secondary school journey. 
“At the annual National Teaching Awards ceremony earlier this month, I spoke of teachers as being like devoted gardeners, whose attention, guidance and encouragement nurtures our nation. The successes that the Class of 2024 will undoubtedly achieve will be in no small part due to the efforts of our country’s devoted teachers,” the President said.

As the exams commence, all necessary systems have been put in place to ensure a smooth examination period. 

The Department of Basic Education, in collaboration with Umalusi, has conducted audits of over 9 200 exam centres, vetted exam markers, and approved question papers, including those adapted for learners with special needs. 

Additionally, stringent measures have been implemented to prevent question paper leaks, fraud, and cheating, including the appointment of additional invigilators and enhanced security measures, such as the use of CCTV at some venues.

President Ramaphosa expressed gratitude to the matric candidates for signing the NSC Examination Code of Conduct, which commits them to maintaining academic honesty during the exams.

According to the DBE, by signing the Matric Exam Pledge, learners publicly commit to upholding ethical standards during the exams and remaining focused on their goals.

Integrating young people into the workforce

The President used the occasion to reflect on the importance of integrating the Class of 2024 into the workforce or further education after their exams. 

“The unemployment rate among young people aged 15-24 stands at 60.8%, according to the latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey. 

“Just as preparing our nation’s young people to achieve success in this exam is a collaborative effort, there is much more that partners like the private sector can do to hire young people.”

To address this, the President has called on employers to relax work experience requirements for entry-level positions and make use of incentives, such as learnership agreements, discretionary grants, and the Employee Tax Incentive, to hire young people.

The incentive is aimed at encouraging employers to hire young and less experienced work seekers.

The President also emphasised the legal obligation of employers to prioritise hiring South African citizens or permanent residents before considering foreign nationals for positions, underscoring the need to provide more opportunities for young South Africans.

“Recent business premises inspections by the Department of Home Affairs and the Department of Employment and Labour have thrown into sharp relief the contentious issue of some employers preferring to employ foreign nationals and illegal immigrants. 

“Employers must instead open up more opportunities for young South Africans entering the job market. They need to remember that by law they have to ensure that no suitable South African citizen or permanent resident is available to fill a position before employing a foreign national. This is established practice around the world,” the President said.

The President concluded by urging all sectors of society to work together to ensure that the hard work of the Class of 2024 is rewarded with employment, further education, and training opportunities. 

He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the youth in their journey toward a brighter future.

“As all of society, we have a responsibility to ensure that the morale of the Class of 2024 is boosted by knowing their hard work and sacrifices will be rewarded. Let us continue to work together to ensure that the latest cohort of matriculants find the opportunities for employment or further education and training that they deserve,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za

President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on everyone to put their weight behind implementing the Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Act so that all children receive a good quality education regardless of their circumstances.

“The passage of the Basic Education Laws Amendment Act is part of ongoing efforts to build an education system that is more effective and more equitable. 

“Among other things, the Act provides for early learning foundations to be strengthened, promotes greater accountability of parents for their children’s learning and promotes inclusivity in the classroom,” the President said on Saturday. 

President Ramaphosa was speaking at the 24th instalment of the National Teaching Awards as the globe commemorates World Teacher’s Day at the Birchwood Hotel and OR Tambo Conference Centre in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng.

He explained that the spirit and purpose of this new legislation was to ensure there was uniformity and fairness in educational standards between schools and across the country. 

Last month, President Ramaphosa signed the Bill into law but delayed the implementation of two clauses 4 and 5, which deal with school admissions and language, by three months to make room for more discussion and deliberations after it received some opposition. 

“In the interests of inclusivity, we have created space for engagement among some concerned parties on aspects of the legislation. But that process cannot undermine the transformational nature of this law.” 

Meanwhile, the President told the people gathered at the conference centre that in order to produce more learners who excel in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, South Africa needs to invest more in supporting and upskilling its teachers and arm them with necessary resources.

“In some schools, resources are plenty, the schoolyard is safe, there are basic amenities, the pupil-teacher ratio is appropriate, and learning takes place in good conditions. But in others, educators struggle to obtain even the most basic resources for teaching, schools lack safe toilets and running water, and crime and violence from outside the school inevitably finds its way in.” 

However, according to the President, South Africa has made much progress in narrowing the gaps between schools. 

He said government was working to strengthen the foundations of early learning to ensure successful education outcomes in the future. 

The President announced that the education curriculum was being revised, updated and reformed to meet the needs of a rapidly changing world. 

“With the high rate of youth unemployment in our country, educators need to ensure that our schools are producing the skills our economy needs. They need to ensure that every school leaver has the confidence and capabilities that enable them to study further, find employment or be self-employed. 

“We are working to fully implement the three-stream model, which offers academic, vocational and occupational pathways for learners. Educators play an important role in identifying the best course for a learner.”

Shifting his focus to the National Teaching Awards, he noted that the enduring commitment to honouring educators speaks to their unique and treasured place in the country. 

“All of us are who we are because of the teachers we once had. I have the fondest memories of my own teachers at Tshilidzi Primary School in Soweto and Mphaphuli High School in Sibasa, Venda… All these years later, they still hold a special place in my heart,” he told the room full of teachers. 

The President described a good teacher as a role model who encourages a child to achieve their potential. 

He took the time to congratulate those who were awarded today and acknowledged teacher unions and School Governing Bodies (SGBs) who are working with government to build a resilient education system that meets the challenges of the future. 

Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube thanked President Ramaphosa for his unwavering support not just for her but the sector.

Employment and Labour to host Employment Standards Conference 

The role of labour inspectors with the aim of protecting vulnerable workers in different sectors of the South African labour market, will come to the fore at the Department of Employment and Labour’s Employment Standards Conference.

The department’s Inspection and Enforcement Services (IES) branch is set to host the conference from 8 to 10 October at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

“The conference promises to be an enlightening platform for the more than 350 inspectors expected to attend, offering an opportunity to engage in constructive dialogues, exchange ideas, and explore strategies to enhance compliance and maintain equality of inspections within the labour market.

It is an occasion to not only hear from leadership but also to contribute to the transformation of the inspections and South African labour market,” the department said.

The gathering will bring together inspectors specialising in the fields of basic conditions of employment, unemployment insurance, compensation for occupational injuries and diseases, employment equity, and the national minimum wage enforcement.

In recognition of work performed by the overstretched inspectors, the IES branch also plans to host an awards ceremony to reward the good work performed by the inspectors.

The department regularly conducts advocacy campaigns to ensure compliance with the labour legislation it administers. 

These include the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), Unemployment Insurance Act (UIA), Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases (COID) Act, National Minimum Wage Act (NMWA), Employment Equity Act (EEA), Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), and the Employment Services Act (ESA).

Communications and Digital Technologies Committee Calls for Ministerial Intervention in South African Post Office (SAPO) Business Rescue Process

The Portfolio Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies is gravely concerned about the business rescue process at the South African Post Office (SAPO) following a presentation to the committee yesterday, 17 September 2024.

The Business Rescue Practitioners (BRPs) appeared before the committee to provide an urgent update on mitigation strategies to avoid the so-called Day Zero scenario. Day Zero – set for 30 October 2024 – is understood to be the day when the ailing national postal services are expected to run out of cash reserves required for their operations.

The presentation covered the progress to date with implementing the business rescue plan and proposed mitigation measures being considered by the BRPs, who have assumed full management and operational control of the company. The committee noted some of the BRPs' work to achieve short to medium-term objectives, including reducing approximately R1.2 billion in annual employee costs, right-sizing the entity and paying dividend awards of 12 cents in the Rand to all pre-commencement current creditors.

The committee has, however, expressed its dissatisfaction with the presentation, reaffirming its position that the BRPs have failed to present a cogent business case for the SAPO's long-term sustainability in line with their statement of intent at the start of the business rescue proceedings, to ensure “the stabilisation, survival and future-proofing of the SA Post Office”.

The committee believes that the BRPs were appointed to implement a three-legged mandate of rescuing, stabilising and ensuring the long-term commercial viability of the Post Office. In the briefing to the committee, the BRPs said nothing about the plan to future proof SAPO, except to say that they needed R3.8 billion from the fiscus. According to the BRPs, this money is used to pay the final tranche of the retirement packages to employees, meet obligations with payroll creditors and use the remainder for capital and operational expenditures.

The committee believes that to access the desired cash draw down from the fiscus, the business rescue process should clearly demonstrate the path to viability and sustainability beyond this requested bail out. Failure to do so is to absolve the BRPs of their obligation to the organisation.

Consequently, the committee has called on the Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Mr Solly Molatsi, to urgently establish a Ministerial Intervention Team (MIT) to work with the Business Rescue Practitioners and the National Treasury, amongst others, to develop a strong business case to save and restore the Post Office as a reinvigorated going concern. The MIT should, amongst other actions, urgently convene stakeholders and other industry players in the postal services, courier and e-commerce sectors to engage on proposals towards strategic, sustainable and value-creating private sector partnerships. Due consideration should also be given to exploring opportunities to leverage SAPO's extensive property assets for retail, residential and student accommodation purposes.

To support the process, the committee shall also engage with its counterparts in Parliament to aggressively enhance support for the SAPO by the rest of government. Furthermore, the committee shall also seek a joint meeting with the Standing Committee on Finance to explore any available measures that can be put in place to salvage the situation. The committee firmly believes that no effort must be spared to rescue and revive the South African Post Office as a vital state institution with an important mandate to connect people to one another and to the government in a fast-evolving technological age.
