Deputy President Paul Mashatile will deliver the keynote address at Friday’s 2025 Human Rights Day commemoration event.
The Deputy President will deliver the address on behalf of President Cyril Ramaphosa at the Derrick Ferreira Stadium in Kariega, located within the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in the Eastern Cape.
This as Human Rights commemorative events this year are held under the theme, “Deepening a Culture of Social Justice and Human Rights” .
“This is a call for a renewed and strengthened commitment from all levels of society, to accelerate practical solutions in driving inclusive growth and job creation, to reduce poverty and tackle the high cost of living, and to build a capable, ethical and developmental State,” the Presidency said in a statement on Wednesday.
South Africa commemorates National Human Rights Day on 21 March to remember the Sharpeville massacre, where apartheid police killed 69 peaceful protesters against the regime in 1960.
The Presidency stated that this is an important day, which also honours 35 people who were killed on 21 March 1985, when apartheid police targeted community members after a funeral in Uitenhage and KwaLanga.
The government has chosen Kariega to host the national Human Rights Day commemoration as the State’s initiative to rotate national days, allowing communities across all provinces to pay tribute to those who lost their lives during the liberation struggle.
According to the Presidency, it also provides an opportunity to reflect on and evaluate the progress made towards building a non-racial, non-sexist, democratic, and united nation.
Deputy President Mashatile will be accompanied by the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Mmamoloko Kubayi, Premier of the Eastern Cape Province Oscar Mabuyane, Members of the Eastern Cape Provincial Executive Council, Mayors, and senior government officials. – SAnews.gov.za

Developing oil and gas resources can boost economy
Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe says developing the country’s gas and oil potential could be a game changer for economic growth.
“The South African government wants accelerated oil exploration in the country’s waters, we believe developing the country’s oil and gas resources could boost the country’s economic growth rate to 5% and possibly 8%.
“Government took a decision to rationalise some of our State-owned Entities [SOEs] to form the South African National Petroleum Company [SANPC]. The SANPC is a strategic intervention by government to create a State-owned national company to actively pursue oil and gas projects,” the Minister said in his speaking notes at the 4th Annual Southern Africa Oil and Gas (SAOG) Conference in Cape Town on Wednesday.
Exploration has found that South Africa’s coastal and adjoining waters hold approximately nine billion barrels of oil and a further 11 billion barrels oil equivalent of natural gas, although there remains uncertainty about the extent.
Mantashe noted that considering increasing demand for natural gas, “government has moved with speed to finalise the Gas Master Plan to achieve a stable and growing economy”.
“The Gas Master Plan is designed to complement existing energy policies and contribute to an integrated energy planning approach for the country as outlined in the updated Integrated Resources Plan. It provides a framework for the role of natural gas in the energy mix and gives policy direction to industry.
“Its objective is to ensure that government is able to diversify supply options from local and international markets. Furthermore, to facilitate the development an efficient, competitive and responsive energy infrastructure network, such as gas storage facilities, liquefied natural gas import facilities, pipeline networks and regasification plants.
“Through this, the Plan would also enhance localisation, create jobs and enable inclusive economic growth,” Mantashe said.
He noted that the European bloc of nations is looking to Africa to “diversify its gas supplies”.
“While this presents an opportunity to earn foreign revenue, we should ensure that we do not export our gas at the expense of domestic and regional markets. It is imperative for SADC [Southern African Development Community] countries to be resolute in their efforts to unlock oil and gas exploration and development.
“This further presents SADC countries with an opportunity to determine conditions that will alleviate global oil and gas prices by developing their own resources.
“There must be a concerted effort among African nations to ensure that the oil and gas sector grows and thrives through investments in the upstream development for the economic prosperity of our nations,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za

Bail hearing for SASSA fraud accused postponed to April
The bail hearing for seven South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) officials and three accomplices accused of fraud has been postponed to 1 April 2025.
The accused appeared before the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, facing more than 1 000 fraud-related charges.
Four of the accused were arrested last month, while another four were taken into custody on Friday. Two more suspects handed themselves over on Sunday and Monday, respectively.
SASSA Acting Chief Executive Officer, Themba Matlou, welcomed the arrests, emphasising the agency’s commitment to eradicating all forms of fraud and corruption elements within its ranks.
“What we have seen in the last few weeks is a culmination of the hard work of our officials, working with the South African Police Service (SAPS) in clamping down on fraud and corruption at SASSA,” Matlou said.
He further urged the public to report any suspicious activities related to social grants.
“We cannot win this fight alone. We appeal to members of the community to assist us to root out the scourge.”

Action taken against Harties Dam invasive alien plant
Water and Sanitation Deputy Minister, Sello Seitlholo, and the Rhodes University Centre for Biological Control (CBC) have released weevil species to tackle the invasive alien aquatic plant at Hartbeespoort Dam in the North West.
The salvinia weevil insect is a biological control agent known as Cyrtobagous salviniae, used to manage the Salvinia minima, an invasive floating alien aquatic weed (known as the common salvinia).
The weevil species is a subaquatic herbivorous insect that feeds on the common salvinia. The species were imported from Florida State in the United Sates of America (USA), and it has proven to be effective and successful to control the aquatic plant in the USA.
Joined by Professor Julie Coetzee, the Deputy Director of the Centre for Biological Control and Principal Scientist at the National Research Foundation’s South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity, Seitlholo officially released the salvinia weevil insect on Monday at Mogi Adventures, located next to the Crocodile River.
The invasive alien plant was initially recorded at Hartbeespoort Dam in 2011, and has since spread through areas of the North West and Gauteng Provinces, and has reached the Limpopo River, which marks the border with the neighbouring country of Botswana, threatening South Africa’s water bodies.
According to Coetzee, the weevils multiply quickly and their impact of controlling the aquatic plant can be observed in a year.
She said the CBC, in collaboration with community partners, will rear the weevil and facilitate releases at various sites across the country where water is invaded by the common salvinia.
“This biological control programme will be monitored and the progress of the weevil and its impact on common salvinia will be noted. The weevils only feed on the salvinia minima plant and their entire life cycle depends on the plant, thus they do not have a threat of infesting other ornamental plants, crops or even the water hyacinth plants,” Coetzee said.
Seitlholo emphasised the importance of securing the country’s water resources by partnering with scientific institutes like the CBC.
“What is also important is for us to get into serious conversations with municipalities in the upper catchment that are largely responsible for causing the high nutrient load in the water due to their substandard effluent discharged from their wastewater treatment works, which is being released into the river, eventually landing in the dam.
“This results in high nutrient levels in the water, which gives rise to the spread of these alien invasive aquatic plants, compromising the ecosystem, recreation and the general local economy,” Seitlholo said.
He said the use of the weevils will run concurrently with the other remediation programme currently underway at the dam, which is being implemented by Magalies Water to eradicate alien invasion species that have negatively impacted the ecosystem in the water.
The remedial programme includes the physical removal of the water hyacinth at the dam. This also includes the pilot project of nanobubbles technology, which increases dissolved oxygen in the water, activates the decomposition of microorganisms in water and river sediment.
Given that the quality of water is affected by the discharge of effluent and raw sewage from the municipalities of Tshwane, Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni, Seitlholo said municipalities ought to play a role in the remediation programmes undertaken by the department to rehabilitate the water resource.
Despite the department’s Compliance, Enforcement and Monitoring Directorate engaging the municipalities, Seitlholo said the department has also proposed amendments to Section 19 of the National Water Act (NWA), which focuses on preventing and remedying the effects of pollution, ensuring the protection of water resources and addressing pollution.
Seitlholo said the proposed amendments to the NWA, which are currently with the State Law Advisor, enable the department to directly hold the executive mayor and the municipal manager liable for the transgressions of the municipality in terms of the pollution of the country’s water courses.
“These legislation measures are taken by the department to fundamentally deal with issues of water pollution in the country,” Seitlholo said. – SAnews.gov.za

Deputy President Paul Mashatile has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties with Japan during a working visit marking 115 years of relations between the two nations.
Speaking at United Nations University in Tokyo, the Deputy President underscored South Africa’s ongoing collaboration with Japan, highlighting the Strategic Cooperation Partnership established in 2010.
“This year, the two countries celebrate a significant milestone of 115 years of relations,” he said.
He also praised Japan’s significant investment in South Africa, with 273 firms currently operating in the country and sustaining over 200,000 local jobs.
“These ties have particularly flourished in the fields of trade and investment, science and technology, and education and skills development assistance. Japan is a significant investor in the South African economy, with 273 firms operating in the country, hence sustaining over 200 000 local employment opportunities for many South Africans,” he said.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Deputy President held fruitful engagements with the Prime Minister as well as with the Chief Cabinet Secretary of Japan. He said these meetings were a sign of the significant people, and trade relations between the two sister countries.
Beyond economic ties, cultural exchanges were also in focus. The Deputy President visited the historic Meiji Jingu forest, where he reflected on the importance of nature in fostering societal development, linking it to the African philosophy of Ubuntu.
“This visit served as a reminder of how the forest and nature more cements the importance of connecting with nature what has been appreciated as Kami.
“We have a lot in common as a people, hence we will continue to invest in people-to-people cultural exchange programmes. This is already happening through the number of rugby players that are playing in various teams here in Japan. We are emphasising the importance of people to people because it becomes easier to do business when you know each others' cultures,” the Deputy President said.
Strengthening economic cooperation
The visit comes at a time when South Africa is looking to bolster international partnerships in light of current geopolitical challenges confronting the nation and the global community.
The Deputy President emphasised that his delegation’s trip was aimed at fortifying economic collaborations, particularly in inclusive economic development and trade balance.
“We want our two nations to collaborate with a particular emphasis on promoting inclusive economic development and ensuring a balance and increase in trade between the two nations.
“This has also been one of the priorities of South Africa’s 7th Administration, popularly known as the Government of National Unity (GNU). The formation of the Government of National Unity is a momentous development in South Africa’s democracy,” he said.
South Africa’s leadership in the G20 was also highlighted, with the Deputy President reiterating the country’s vision for its presidency under the theme “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability.”
“We want to make a meaningful contribution to the expressions of the continent through Vision 2063 towards the Africa we want. Such an Africa is one that is more integrated into the global community and acts as a key player in the economy and the socio-political landscape more broadly.
“We believe that in an interconnected world, the challenges faced by one country have an impact at a global level,” he said.
Call for global cooperation
The Deputy President concluded his address by emphasising the importance of global cooperation in addressing challenges such as climate change, rising nationalism, and economic instability.
“As I conclude, let me emphasise that our challenges can only be resolved through cooperation, collaboration, and partnership; no challenge and no triumph exist in isolation. Cooperation is our greatest strength and our most powerful weapon.
“Under the guiding principle of Ubuntu - the profound belief that ‘I am because you are’ – we are reminded of the interconnectedness of humanity. It is this principle of Ubuntu that underpins South Africa’s leadership and vision for our G20 Presidency, and our future,” the Deputy President said.
He further urged everyone to remember that true progress is achieved not through words alone but through meaningful action and collaboration.
“We should be deliberate in our conversation and find more meaningful ways to strengthen our relations, both in trade, and investment. Let us work hand in hand towards a more just, equitable, and sustainable world for all,” he said.
The Deputy President arrived in Japan on Sunday and will conclude his visit on Wednesday, 19 March.

Higher Education and Training Minister, Dr Nobuhle Nkabane, has congratulated former Cabinet Minister, Dr Naledi Pandor on her recent appointment as an Honorary Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Pretoria (UP).
Nkabane said this achievement is a fitting recognition of Pandor’s extensive contributions to the South African higher education sector, having served admirably as the Minister of Education; Science and Technology; Higher Education and Training; and more recently, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO).
Nkabane noted Pandor’s significant contribution to reconfiguring the South African higher education landscape in the post-apartheid era, by ensuring that the restructuring of the higher education sector serves South Africans, irrespective of race, gender, and other forms of exclusion.
The Minister also noted Pandor’s visionary leadership and a pivotal role she played in transforming the South African higher education system, promoting social justice and equality through progressive policies.
“South Africa has positioned itself at the forefront of science, technology, and innovation, thanks to the solid foundation laid by Dr Pandor. Her unwavering commitment to building an inclusive and coordinated higher education sector is commendable,” Nkabane said in a statement on Monday.

Speaking at a recent event held at UP’s Hatfield campus to welcome Pandor, Petersen said Pandor is a leader whose impact on education, policy and innovation, and whose unwavering commitment to advancing higher education and sustainable development, aligns perfectly with the mission of the centre.
“It is truly a privilege to have someone of her calibre joining our academic network in this esteemed role.”
Petersen highlighted that Pandor’s appointment followed an external peer-review process and was vetted by the Senior Appointments Committee of the UP Senate. The university’s Registrar issued a formal note confirming that Professor Pandor is permitted to use the title of “Professor.”
Pandor received a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Education from UP in 2019, after completing her doctoral thesis, titled ‘The contested meaning of transformation in higher education in post-apartheid South Africa’.
“Her passion for education stems from her background as a teacher and a lifelong curiosity about the field. Through her research, Prof Pandor explored the vast and rewarding landscape in education, while acquiring academic and research skills,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
He added that the honorary professorship was a testament, not only to Pandor’s academic abilities and remarkable contributions to transformation, but also to her excellence as a leader with strong ethical values.

KZN champions digital solutions to combat gender-based violence
KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Thamsanqa Ntuli, has emphasised the critical role that digital initiatives can play in addressing the scourge of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).
“We must explore innovative ways to use technology as a weapon against GBVF. Digital platforms can provide immediate access to support services, real-time emergency assistance, and critical legal resources for victims, particularly students and young women who are vulnerable to abuse,” Ntuli said.
His comments follow a recent high-level brainstorming session with key stakeholders from the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector convened by the Premier.
The session aimed to explore technological solutions to address the rising tide of GBVF, with particular attention given to the alarming impact on students in higher education institutions.
The discussion sought to identify digital strategies to strengthen intervention efforts and improve support systems for victims.
This follows President Cyril Ramaphosa’s declaration of GBVF as a national pandemic in 2020, acknowledging its alarming rise and the urgent need for innovative, technology-driven solutions.
Key areas
The session focused on developing and integrating technology-driven solutions into the province’s GBVF response framework.
The session explored key areas of intervention, including:
• Tech-based emergency response systems – Exploring real-time mobile applications and alert platforms for victims in distress.
• Digital awareness campaigns – Strengthening online engagement to educate communities on GBVF prevention.
• AI-driven safety monitoring – Implementing artificial intelligence to track and report high-risk areas for targeted interventions.
• Public-private partnerships – Enhancing collaboration between the ICT industry, business sector, and government to drive digital transformation in GBVF prevention.
Ntuli highlighted the provincial government’s commitment to harnessing ICT solutions to create safer communities while also ensuring swift intervention in GBVF cases.
He commended the business sector and ICT industry for their willingness to partner with the government in developing TechServy Systems, a technology-based tool designed to combat GBVF through data-driven interventions, real-time tracking, and enhanced accessibility of support services.
Commitment to action
The meeting concluded with stakeholders agreeing on practical steps to fast-track the development and implementation of digital safety solutions across KwaZulu-Natal and reinforcing the province’s proactive stance against GBVF.
Ntuli reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to work with ICT stakeholders to implement sustainable, tech-driven GBVF solutions.
“Leveraging technology is no longer optional but essential in tackling the crisis effectively. This session marks the beginning of a long-term strategy to integrate ICT innovations into our fight against GBVF.

SA is addressing port challenges, says Deputy President
Deputy President Paul Mashatile has assured executives from Isuzu Motors Limited’s headquarters in Japan that South Africa is actively working to resolve its port and infrastructure issues.
This comes in the wake of significant congestion, infrastructure shortfalls, and equipment failures at the country’s major ports, which have affected both import and export operations.
“I am pleased to report that we have dealt with energy issues that affected our economy,” the Deputy President said on Monday.
The Deputy President spoke at the Isuzu Fujisawa Plant where he is currently on a working visit with a delegation that includes Ministers, Deputy Ministers, and senior government officials.

The purpose of the visit is to strengthen cooperation between the two nations in areas of mutual interest.
The multinational corporation that manufactures commercial vehicles, diesel engines, and automotive parts has a significant presence in South Africa.
As a Japanese automobile manufacturer, Isuzu has been in South Africa for a long time and is well-known for its trucks and bakkies.
“As a country, we are honoured that the Isuzu Motors South Africa Struandale Plant in Gqeberha, in our Eastern Cape province, is the first fully-owned plant outside Japan whereas in other countries Isuzu produces vehicles through joint ventures and license agreements.
“This shows great confidence in our country and our people for the skills necessary to produce these trucks and bakkies.”
According to the Deputy President, the Struandale Plant produces 28 500 vehicles per annum and has dealerships across 26 countries in Africa.
With the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the Deputy President stated that the continent has created even more opportunities for Isuzu to export and operate in over 54 countries that have signed the agreement.
The AfCFTA creates the largest single free trade business area, with 1.3 billion people and a gross domestic product (GDP) of US$3.4 trillion.
Isuzu also exports to the European Union (EU) under the Southern African Development Community (SADC) -EU Economic Partnership Agreement, in addition to being active in Africa.
“Therefore, South Africa is the place to be, indeed a gateway into the continent and the rest of the world including Japan under the generalised system of preferences.”
The country’s second-in-command described Isuzu as a model investor in South Africa, contributing to employment, skills development, and supplier and enterprise development.
“I also understand that Isuzu contracted 107 suppliers with over 700 parts being localised in South Africa and some integrated into Isuzu global supply chains,” he said, adding that Isuzu achieved Level 1 Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE).
He informed the delegation that the government, through the Automotive Production Development Programme, has provided essential support to Isuzu.
During the working visit, the Deputy President and his delegation will engage with the business community in Japan to enhance economic relations.
They will focus on key areas such as manufacturing and machinery, mining and mineral beneficiation, energy cooperation, the automotive industry, and improving market access for South Africa’s agricultural products.
He is also expected to meet with Dr Akihiko Tanaka, the President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) today.
JICA is a government agency that is actively involved in various development projects in South Africa.

Social Development visits funded community based organisations
The Department of Social Development is conducting nationwide oversight visits to various community-based organisations that are funded to render social development services across South Africa.
In a statement on Sunday, the department said the visits form part of the department’s ongoing measures to build and strengthen the capacity of non-governmental organisations that render much-needed services to communities.
This includes psychosocial support to vulnerable children and families, HIV prevention, teenage and unplanned pregnancies targeting children and young people.
The department highlighted that South Africa remains the epicentre of the HIV epidemic and there is a great need to prevent and reduce new infections, with a strong focus on young people.
“As one of the key departments in HIV and AIDS response, Social Development has developed a compendium of social and behaviour change programmes which seek to contribute to the reduction of new HIV infections as well as mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS on individuals, families and communities.
“The compendium of programmes consists of the following programmes: You Only Live Once (YOLO), ChommY, Boys Championing Change, Men Championing Change, Family’s Matter and the Rock Leadership programme, which specifically targets traditional leaders,” the department said.
The community-based organisations that were visited last week include Brother Services Community Development in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga. The organisation received funding to prevent new HIV infections, child protection and teenage pregnancy in Lillydale and surrounding communities under the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality.
“With a staff complement of 23 receiving a monthly stipend and reaching over 5000 beneficiaries through its various programmes, the organisation plans to expand its services by working closely with local schools,” the department said.
A 2022 report by the Department of Health focusing on adolescent and youth district data showed that every year, young girls become pregnant, with Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, and Mpumalanga respectively identified as teenage pregnancy hot spots.
The department noted that early pregnancies among teenagers presents a myriad of long-term socio-economic challenges such as health risks for teenage mothers and their babies, perpetuating the cycle of intergenerational poverty due to early school dropout, the spread of HIV infections, emotional, psychological, and post-natal depression, among others.
“Social and behaviour change (SBC) programmes are essential components of HIV prevention represent one of the priority interventions highlighted in the National Strategic Plan for HIV, TB and STIs (2023-2028). Social and behaviour change efforts aim to reinforce protective sexual behaviour by addressing knowledge, attitudes, skills and social norms,” the department said.
In Limpopo, the Deputy Minister of Social Development Ganief Hendricks visited Nhlayiso Community Health Drop-in Centre, which renders care and support services persons living with HIV and AIDS as well as psychosocial social support services to orphans and vulnerable children in Greater Tzaneen under the Mopani District.
The organisation also works with local schools and health facilities to prevent teenage pregnancy, gender-based violence, substance use, addiction, and other substance-related harms.
“One of the key successes of the organisation is that it provides job opportunities for unemployed social service professionals such as social work graduates, social auxiliary workers and child and youth care workers,” the department said.
In line with its developmental mandate, the department will continue with its oversight visits to funded community-based organisations to monitor the effectiveness of the compendium of social and behaviour change programmes especially those that are targeted at children and young people. – SAnews.gov.za

In a statement on Monday, the provincial government said the strategic decisions reflect the government’s commitment to enhancing service delivery, stability, and efficiency in the province.
Eastern Cape Premier, Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, confirmed the provincial government’s confidence in the three incumbents who previously served in an acting capacity.
The newly appointed HODs are Sharon Marsdorp, who has been appointed as the new Education Head of Department, Bonginkosi Dayimani in Agriculture, Edmond Desmond Quinton Venn in Human Settlements, and Phucuka Penny Penxa in Public Works and Infrastructure.

Human Settlements Minister, Thembi Simelane, has pledged to support the Free State Province in its efforts to meet the 2024-2029 target to deliver housing units to qualifying beneficiaries.
Simelane made the commitment during an oversight visit to the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality on Friday, as part of a nationwide assessment of municipal and provincial performance in human settlements programmes.
The visit aimed to address ongoing service delivery blockages within the province.
The visit also formed part of a country-wide municipal and provincial assessment of human settlements programme performance.
Addressing the provincial Human Settlements and Mangaung Municipality, Simelane discouraged working in silos between the provincial department and municipalities.
She emphasised that overcoming the housing backlog and ensuring the delivery of sustainable human settlements, can only be achieved through coordinated efforts.
While acknowledging the progress made to ensure the qualifying beneficiaries receive their houses, with some contractors already on the ground, the Minister expressed concern over several incomplete projects across the province.
“We are gearing ourselves for the current 2024-2029 Medium Term Development Plan (MTDP) to deliver on our mandate. With our limited budget, we are aligning our plans to ensure that we effectively use our allocated budget,” Simelane said.
The Minister reiterated the critical role that contractors play in delivering housing units and warned against those who have been given opportunities to “do the right thing and deliver houses.”
She also issued a stern warning to both contractors and officials who fail to meet their responsibilities, saying that there would be consequences against those who let down the people.
“A delayed project means one senior citizen is denied his or her constitutional right to adequate shelter,” Simelane said.
Simelane further undertook to visit the Metros every quarter, to ensure that housing and service delivery targets are being met.
She also underscored the importance of ensuring that every cent allocated to the department is spent towards improving the lives of deserving households.
Human Settlements MEC, Teboho Mokoena, challenged the Minister to consider visiting the province more frequently, suggesting every two months, and reiterated the province's commitment to improving service delivery.
Mokoena also emphasised budget constraints, which remains a challenge, noting that this will have an impact in the department’s programme.
“Progress is being made on several projects that were blocked including G-Hostel and Dark and Silver City. The qualifying beneficiaries are expected to incrementally move into the completed units during the 2025/2026 financial year,” Mokoena said.
The MEC highlighted the province’s struggle with completing housing projects due to a range of issues, including multiple contractor changes in due to non-performance, vandalism at abandoned sites after contract terminations, community disruptions and non-compliance issues, financial constraints, non-payment of completed work certificates, and bureaucratic delays in the approvals of variation orders and claims.
However, Mokoena assured that interventions are being implemented, including the appointment of new, reliable contractors, and regular monitoring and reporting, to ensure projects stay on track.
“Despite these challenges, the province has done exceptionally well in the provision of serviced sites. By January 2025, the province reported the successful delivery of 5 025 service sites against the 1755 2024/2025 target. Most of the sites delivered are in Fezile Dabi District Municipality,” Mokoena said.
Simelane is expected to return to the Free State to officially hand over completed units at Dark and Silver City Community Residential Units, as well as military veterans’ housing units at the Vista Park Catalytic Project, in Mangaung.
The Vista Park project is a massive development aimed at providing much needed housing opportunities.

North West takes steps to tackle unemployment
Over 24 000 job opportunities are expected to help tackle the unemployment challenge in the North West province.
This was revealed during a roundtable discussion involving North West Premier Lazarus Kagiso Mokgosi, Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour Judith Nemadzinga-Tshabalala, as well as representatives from organised labour, business, and civil society.
The initiative, which involves collaborative work between the North West Provincial Government and the Department of Employment and Labour, will be implemented through a Labour Activation Plan (LAP).
The LAP initiative, funded by the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), aims to enhance employability, enable entrepreneurship, and preserve jobs through skills training, enterprise development, and other intervention measures.
“This initiative has been in the pipeline for some time, and I am happy that it is coming to fruition. This is one of the policy announcements I made during the State of the Province Address [SOPA] to help find solutions to high levels of unemployment in the province,” Mokgosi said on Thursday.
In the SOPA delivered last month, the Premier reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating job opportunities through public employment programs, such as expanded public works, community health workers, community works, and labour activation programmes.
These initiatives aim to create over 150 000 job opportunities in the next five years, targeting women, youth, and persons with disabilities.

At the roundtable, Deputy Minister Nemadzinga-Tshabalala said the roll-out of the programme is in full swing in various provinces and that the North West is the latest beneficiary.
