MOU signed to develop public servants and trainers

Location: News

MOU signed to develop public servants and trainers

Public Service and Administration Minister Inkosi Mzamo Buthelezi has welcomed the signing of an agreement between the National School of Government (NSG) and the E’cole Nationale d’Administration (ENA) - the national school of administration in Burundi.

The two institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Pretoria on Wednesday to facilitate cooperation on educating, training, and developing public servants and trainers.

The MoU was signed by Professor Busani Ngcaweni, NSG Principal, Professor Jean de Dieu Ndikumana, the Director General of ENA, witnessed by the Ambassador of Burundi to South Africa, Alexis Bukuru.

Minister Buthelezi said the agreement was an important development in cementing relations between the two institutions and the two countries.

He added that it contributed to the implementation of the African Union's objectives, to build state capacity and to build stronger states and a functional, capable and efficient public sector on the African continent.

“The NSG will play its role in contributing towards building capacity in Burundi, while South Africa has a lot to learn from Burundi as well, as the country has the invaluable experience of having to rebuild state capacity after a protracted war. We wish both the NSG and ENA the best in the implementation of this agreement,” Minister Buthelezi said.

The MoU enables the parties to collaborate in the following areas:

  • Capacity building for teacher trainers, trainer professionalisation programme and the digital or virtual art of facilitation
  • The joint development and implementation of continuous training actions for senior executives of ENA
  • The exchange of trainees between the NSG and ENA
  • Collaboration in research and sharing of experiences on the development of a new journal
  • Allowing the NSG and ENA researchers of the same academic areas to write, publish and conduct academic and innovation conferences together and
  • Setting up study visits and exchange of officials.

Ngcaweni and Ndikumana said they looked forward to implementing the partnership to empower public servants in their respective countries. – SAnews.gov.za

SA-Ghana strengthen tourism partnerships

Location: News

SA-Ghana strengthen tourism partnerships

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille has embarked on a special outreach programme to Ghana to strengthen tourism partnerships and promote cultural exchange between the two nations.

As part of the outreach programme, taking place from 26 – 28 March, de Lille will engage the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts of Ghana, Abla-Dzifa Gomashie as well as the South Africa-Ghana Chamber of Commerce, tourism trade, key media and tourism stakeholders to showcase South Africa as an attractive leisure and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) destination.

The easing of visa regulations between the two countries in November 2023 was a progressive step that contributed to unlocking significant tourism potential.

It also marked a new chapter in strengthening tourism and trade, creating a seamless journey for both South Africans and Ghanaians to experience the beauty and diversity Ghana and South Africa have to offer. This development also opened doors for increased business, leisure and cultural exchange.

“Ghana and the broader African continent are incredibly important markets for South Africa’s tourism sector.

“This visit reaffirms our dedication to deepening partnerships and unlocking growth opportunities through meaningful collaboration. Ghana has emerged as a standout performer, recording an exceptional 149.0% increase in tourist arrivals to South Africa in 2024 when compared to 2023.

“The number of Ghanaian visitors surged to 36 656, largely due to the introduction of a visa waiver in November 2023 coupled with the consistent marketing by South African Tourism, allowing citizens of both countries to travel to each other's country visa-free for up to 90 days within a year,” the Minister said.

Her visit holds added significance as it takes place in a year when South Africa proudly hosts the G20 Summit - a momentous occasion that highlights South Africa’s growing influence on the global stage and its commitment to fostering meaningful partnerships across the African continent.

“We recognise the immense potential of intra-African travel to drive economic development, cultural exchange, and shared prosperity. It is for this reason that we are conducting this outreach mission to strengthen relations and partnerships with our counterparts in Ghana,” de Lille said.

The outreach programme will also enable senior officials from both countries to engage further on tourism bilateral issues and enhance relations. – SAnews.gov.za

SA to partake in Petersberg Climate Dialogue

Location: News

SA to partake in Petersberg Climate Dialogue

The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment, Dr Dion George, will this week represent South Africa at the 15th Petersberg Climate Dialogue (PCD), where the country will reinforce its commitment to climate action.

“The dialogue will provide a strategic opportunity for South Africa to reinforce its commitment to climate action, advocate for equitable solutions that address the unique challenges faced by developing nations, and foster stronger international cooperation,” the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment said on Monday.

Taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday, the annual high-level conference, co-hosted by Germany and Brazil in Berlin, Germany, serves as a crucial bridge between successive United Nations Climate Change Conferences (COPs), providing a platform for international dialogue on climate action and cooperation.

“Established in 2010 by former German Chancellor Dr Angela Merkel, the dialogue convenes selected nations to pave the way for successful negotiations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

“The ministerial meeting provides an informal yet strategic space for countries to deliberate on key issues under the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement, including the Global Goal on Adaptation, mitigation ambition, loss and damage from climate impacts, and the provision of international climate finance,” the department said.

The Minister will use this platform as an opportunity to provide an overview of South Africa’s Presidency of the G20 Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group.

“I look forward to sharing highlights about our five interrelated key priorities, including climate change and air quality, biodiversity and conservation, and land degradation, desertification and drought,” said George. - SAnews.gov.za

Deputy President Mashatile Receives Courtesy Visit From Chairman of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade

Location: News

The Presidency of the Republic of South Africa
Download logo

Deputy President Shipokosa Paulus Mashatile has today, Thursday, 20 February 2025, received a courtesy visit by the Chairman of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), Mr. REN Hongbin, at the OR Tambo Official Residence in Pretoria, Gauteng Province.

The CCPIT is a key Chinese economic promotion institution that reports directly to the State Council responsible for the facilitation and promotion of trade and investment with foreign countries by supporting Chinese companies (their members) to do business abroad and to engage and support foreign companies that have operations in China.

It has more than 400 000 Chinese business members, the majority of which are from State-owned Companies (SoEs).

This visit to the Deputy President follows the successful 2nd State Visit to China by President Cyril Ramaphosa in September 2024. In particular, it builds on the outcomes of the President's business engagements, including the seminal South Africa – China Presidential Business Forum, the closed roundtable discussion between the President and the Leadership of 20 high-level Chinese investors, and the Presidential Business Programme in Shenzhen that focused on key investors in China's leading technology and innovation hub.

Therefore, the Chairman's visit is mainly focussed on following up on the implementation of the outcomes of the 9th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit held in Beijing in September 2024, as well as optimising the trade and investment environment for better cooperation between South Africa and China.

Deputy President Mashatile has welcomed China's plan to host the FOCAC Ministerial Coordination Meeting alongside the China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo in June 2025.

Such events, he said, would strengthen Africa-China economic relations and accelerate projects in industrialisation, infrastructure, agricultural modernisation, and green development, aligning with AU Agenda 2063 goals.

“Chairman, our President was encouraged by the number of Chinese companies he interacted with in Beijing and Shenzhen last year, who all expressed a wish to increase their investment exposure in South Africa. We continue to prioritise new investments in targeted sectors and enlarge the beneficiation and manufacturing base in South Africa, especially in the automotive and energy, which will contribute to local job creation, technology, and skills transfer,” said the Deputy President.

Furthermore, the Deputy President took the opportunity presented by the visit to mobilise Chinese businesses to attend the Business20 (B20) meetings of the G20 in South Africa this coming year.

In reciprocating the invite by the Deputy President, the Chairman also invited South Africa to attend the 3rd China International Supply Chain Expo (CISCE) that will be hosted by the CCPIT in Beijing in July this year. The CISCE is one of the four national-level trade and investment conferences hosted in China yearly. The 2nd CISCE was held in Beijing in November 2024 and was addressed by the Vice President of China, Mr Han Zheng.

Post the meeting with the Deputy President, the Chairman is expected to meet with the Minister of Trade, Industry, and Competition, Mr Parks Tau.

During this meeting, Deputy President Mashatile was supported by Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ms Moraka and Deputy Minister of Trade Industry and Competition, Mr Godlimpi.

Distributed by APO Group on behalf of The Presidency of the Republic of South Africa.
