African Mining Week to Spotlight Cutting-Edge Mining Tech

Location: Business
Energy Capital & Power

The upcoming African Mining Week (AMW) – Africa's premier gathering for mining stakeholders, scheduled for October 1-3, 2025 in Cape Town – will feature a dedicated Technology Forum. The forum will connect African mining projects with global technology providers and investors, showcasing how digital solutions are transforming resource extraction and redefining the mining value chain.

As African countries scale up mineral production to drive GDP growth, developers are increasingly adopting data analytics and digital tools to boost operational efficiency. U.S.-based startup KoBold Metals, which applies artificial intelligence (AI) to mineral exploration, entered the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in April 2025 to tap into the country's estimated $24 trillion in untapped mineral resources. The DRC – already the world's largest cobalt producer and a key copper supplier – could see its global mining profile rise significantly with KoBold's involvement. In Zambia, the company is advancing the $2 billion Mingomba project, one of the world's most promising untapped copper assets.

Similarly, in Zimbabwe, Caledonia Mining is investing $1.1 million in IT infrastructure upgrades at the Blanket Mine as part of its $41.8 million capital budget. The upgrades include new mine planning software and a digital clocking system to improve labor efficiency, with a goal to increase gold output from 76,656 ounces in 2024 to up to 77,500 ounces in 2025.

In Botswana, Botswana Diamonds is employing AI-driven exploration to expand beyond diamond mining, recently identifying new prospects for copper, silver, cobalt, gold, nickel, zinc and platinum group metals. “During the initial analysis of the big database, it became clear that the AI technology could be used to identify other unknown minerals opportunities – and so it turned out,” said John Teeling, Chairman of Botswana Diamonds.

Meanwhile, South African firms such as Kilken Platinum and Rio Tinto are deploying digital tools to unlock greater operational value. A joint report by Accenture and the World Economic Forum projects that digitalization could unlock up to R213 billion in additional value for South Africa's mining sector by 2026. Technologies such as predictive maintenance, autonomous operations and real-time data monitoring are helping firms streamline processes, reduce downtime and improve safety outcomes.

The Technology Forum at AMW 2025 will feature high-level panels examining how digitalization can optimize infrastructure, enhance safety, predict system failures and support sustainable resource management in a data-driven mining environment. The forum will also provide a platform for mining companies to showcase real-world case studies, exchange knowledge with tech innovators, and explore partnerships that drive long-term value creation.

AMW 2025 to Host Africa-Europe Mining Cooperation Dialogue

Location: Business

Energy Capital & Power

As home to 30% of the world's critical minerals – resources essential to Europe's Green Deal and broader energy transition goals – Africa is attracting heightened interest from European investors and institutions.

Taking place from October 1–3, 2025 in Cape Town, African Mining Week – the continent's premier mining event – will host the Europe-Africa Roundtable under the theme, European Partnerships in African Mining: A Mutually Beneficial Future. The roundtable will convene mining stakeholders, policymakers and investors from both continents to explore investment opportunities and foster cross-continental collaboration.

As Africa seeks to mobilize new capital to drive industrial growth through mining, European-based companies are playing a pivotal role. British multinational Anglo American is advancing copper, nickel, coal and diamond projects in South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Nigeria. Glencore, headquartered in Switzerland, maintains major coal, copper and cobalt operations in South Africa and Botswana, while the UK's Rio Tinto is engaged in a range of mineral ventures across the continent.

Europe's junior and mid-tier mining firms are also gaining ground. Pensana is developing Angola's first rare earths mine at Longonjo, which is expected to meet 5% of global demand for magnet rare earths. Endeavour Mining is leading several gold expansion projects across the continent, including the Lafigué Gold Mine in Ivory Coast, Sabodala-Massawa in Senegal and Kalana in Mali.

Beyond the private sector, the European Commission is also backing strategic infrastructure to unlock mineral corridors. Notably, it is co-financing the Lobito Corridor, which links the DRC, Zambia and Angola to global markets. Through frameworks such as the Global Gateway Africa-Europe Investment Package, the Africa-EU Partnership on Sustainable Raw Materials, and Strategic Partnerships on Critical Raw Materials, Europe is delivering financial backing and technical know-how to Africa's mining sector. These efforts aim to secure reliable, responsible and diversified mineral supply chains while fostering sustainable development and value addition on the African continent.

Within this context, AMW 2025 offers a vital platform to sustain this momentum, deepen cooperation and forge new partnerships that advance mining-led growth. From major investments by European mining giants to infrastructure financing through the Lobito Corridor, Africa is attracting unprecedented levels of capital and collaboration. The Europe-Africa Roundtable will spotlight opportunities across critical minerals, gold, copper and rare earths, while promoting sustainable practices and mutually beneficial engagement.

Africa Finance Corporation Appoints Ireti Samuel-Ogbu as Chair of Board of Directors

Location: Business
Africa Finance Corporation (AFC)

Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) (www.AfricaFC.org), the continent's leading instrumental infrastructure solutions provider, today announced the appointment of Mrs Ireti Samuel-Ogbu as Chair of its Board of Directors. She succeeds Mr. Emeka Emuwa who has completed 12 years of meritorious service to the Corporation.

Mrs. Samuel-Ogbu brings a wealth of experience spread over three decades leading and transforming the banking sector in Europe, Middle East, and Africa. Until recently, she led Citi's institutional businesses in Nigeria and Ghana, with oversight across Banking, Markets and Services. During this period, she steered the franchise through significant macroeconomic and regulatory headwinds, strengthening its strategic momentum and resilience.

Her international career within Citibank included senior leadership roles across over 50 countries in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region, during which time she worked in the United Kingdom, Nigeria, and South Africa.

Mrs. Samuel-Ogbu has extensive boardroom experience including Citibank Nigeria where she was a Non-Executive Director for 6 years and Chair of the Risk Committee prior to becoming the Managing Director. She also served on the board of CHAPS Clearing UK, the high value payment system now operated by the Bank of England and a UK-based charity, Opportunity International. Her extensive experience and unwavering dedication to the advancement of Africa make her a valuable asset to AFC at a time when the Corporation is more committed than ever to accelerating Africa's transformation through bold investments, innovative financing models and catalytic partnerships.

AFC recently delivered a record-breaking FY2024 financial performance, with total revenue increasing by 22.8% to US$1.1 billion, surpassing the US$1 billion milestone for the first time. This strong performance was driven by several transformational projects including acting as the Lead Project Developer for the Lobito Corridor, a transformative multi-country transport network connecting Angola, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), financing of the expansion of the Kamoa-Kakula Copper Complex in the DRC — one of the world's highest-grade, low-carbon underground copper mines and financing support for the commissioning of the Dangote Refinery, the largest in Africa.

Speaking on the appointment, Samaila Zubairu, President & CEO of AFC, said: " We are delighted to welcome Mrs Ireti Samuel-Ogbu as Chair of the Board. Her wealth of experience, visionary leadership and deep understanding of Africa's financial landscape will be invaluable as we navigate our next phase of growth- expanding our impact, mobilising urgently needed capital and delivering transformative projects that enable inclusive and sustainable prosperity across the continent.”

Mrs Ireti Samuel-Ogbu commented: “I am honoured to take on the role of Chair at AFC, an institution that serves as a trusted bridge between international capital and Africa's dynamic growth opportunities. I look forward to working closely with the board, management, and all stakeholders to advance the Corporation's mission and strengthen its role as the leading provider of strategic, investment-driven solutions that unlock Africa's full economic potential.”

AMW to Spotlight Investor Strategies Driving Africa’s Mineral Industrialization

Location: Business

Energy Capital & Power

African Mining Week (AMW) – taking place from October 1–3, 2025, in Cape Town – will connect global investors with high-impact opportunities across Africa's mining sector, spotlighting the strategies fueling the continent's mineral industrialization.

A key highlight of the event will be a high-level panel, The Investor Perspective: Financing Africa's Mineral Industrialization. The session will explore the evolving investment landscape and examine diverse financing mechanisms – including bank loans, private equity, venture capital and impact investing – that are mobilizing capital into African mining.

DFIs Drive Infrastructure Investments

Attracted by strong returns and Africa's long-term growth potential, development finance institutions (DFIs) are ramping up investments into the continent's mining infrastructure. In March 2025, the African Development Bank approved a $150 million loan to Mauritania's state-owned mining company SNIM and committed $500 million to the Lobito Corridor – a strategic railway project linking Angola, the DRC and Zambia to international markets. Meanwhile, the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) is backing several critical mineral projects, including Nyanza Light Metals' $780 million PGMs facility in South Africa, Gecamines' expansion in the DRC, Giyani Metals' manganese development in Botswana and FG Gold's project in Sierra Leone. Between 2014 and 2024, AFC invested over $1 billion into Africa's mining sector. The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) is also deepening its commitment, providing more than $750 million toward the Lobito Corridor, $34 million for Pensana's Longonjo rare earths project in Angola and $3.2 million to Chillerton's green copper development in Zambia.

Geopolitics and African Prospects

Geopolitical shifts are intensifying the global race for Africa's critical minerals, vital for the energy transition and digital economy. From 2019 to 2023, companies from the United Arab Emirates committed over $110 billion to African projects. In early 2025, UAE-based Ambrosia Investment Holding acquired a 50% stake in Allied Gold's projects in Ethiopia and Mali, investing $375 million to scale up gold production. Canadian mining investment on the continent has now surpassed $37 billion, with companies like Ivanhoe Mines, Fortuna Silver, Pioneer Lithium and Trigon Metals leading expansion efforts. Similarly, Australia's mining footprint in Africa reached $60 billion in asset value in 2024, supported by firms such as Sovereign Metals, Cazaly Resources and Atlantic Lithium.

Private Placements

Private placements are emerging as a preferred capital-raising vehicle for mining ventures across Africa. Companies including Zanaga Iron Ore, Moab Minerals, Global Atomic Corporation, Premier African Minerals and Trigon Metals are leveraging this mechanism to fast-track project development and attract investor interest. As ESG criteria take center stage in investment decision-making, AMW will serve as a platform for financiers and project developers to engage on sustainability metrics, transparency and responsible investing.

Africa Finance Corporation Tops Us$1 Billion Revenue for First Time as Landmark Projects Unlock Growth Across the Continent

Location: Business
Africa Finance Corporation (AFC)

Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) (www.AfricaFC.org), the continent's leading infrastructure solutions provider, has announced its strongest financial performance to date, with total revenue for the year ended 31 December 2024 surpassing US$ 1 billion for the first time in the Corporation's history.

This record performance marks a significant milestone in AFC's mission to close Africa's infrastructure gap through scalable, de-risked investments that attract global capital and deliver tangible development outcomes. The Corporation posted a 22.8% increase in total revenue to US$1.1 billion and a 22.3% rise in total comprehensive income to US$400 million, up from US$327 million in 2023.

AFC's earnings growth was driven by improved asset yields, prudent cost-of-funds management and sustained traction in advisory mandates.

Further significant financial highlights include:

  • Net interest income up 42.5% to US$ 613.6 million
  • Fee and commission income rose to US$109 million, the highest in over five years
  • Operating income climbed 42.7% to US$709.7 million
  • Total assets reached a record US$14.4 billion, a 16.7% year-on-year increase
  • Liquidity coverage ratio strengthened to 194%, providing over 34 months of cover
  • Cost-to-income ratio improved to 17.3% from 19.6% in 2023

Throughout 2024, AFC continued to scale its impact by mobilising capital for landmark projects across energy, transport, and natural resources. These included the Lobito Corridor – a cross-border railway development spanning Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Zambia. AFC led the initiative to secure a concession agreement within one year of the initial Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), an unprecedented achievement for a project of its scale. In the DRC, AFC also invested US$150 million in the Kamoa-Kakula Copper Complex, Africa's largest copper producer and one of the most sustainable globally, thanks to its high-grade ore and renewable-powered smelter.

Other milestones transactions included financing support for the commissioning of the Dangote Refinery, the largest in Africa, and continued progress on AFC-backed Infinity Power Holding's 10 GW clean energy ambition, with power purchase agreements secured in Egypt and South Africa. AFC also invested in the 15GW Xlinks Morocco-UK Power Project, providing US$14.1 million to support early-stage development of a transcontinental renewable energy pipeline between North Africa and Europe.

AFC strengthened its capital base and expanded its investor network through several landmark funding initiatives. These included a US$ 1.16 billion syndicated loan - the largest in its history, a US$500 million perpetual hybrid bond issue, and the successful execution of Nigeria's first-ever domestic dollar bond, which raised US$900 million at 180% oversubscription. AFC also returned to the Islamic finance market after eight years, closing a US$400 million Shariah-compliant facility.

The year also saw strong momentum in equity mobilisation, with US$181.8 million in new capital raised from ten institutional investors. These included Turk Eximbank - AFC's first non-African sovereign shareholder - the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), and several major pension funds spanning Cameroon, Seychelles, Mauritius, and South Africa. Ratings agencies affirmed AFC's robust credit profile, with AAA ratings from S&P Global (China) and China Chengxin International, and a stable A3 Outlook from Moody's.

“These results send a clear message that strategic investment in African infrastructure creates lasting value for both beneficiaries and investors,” said Samaila Zubairu, President & CEO of AFC. “In 2024, we exceeded the billion-dollar revenue mark, delivered game-changing projects, and reinforced our financial resilience—demonstrating the scalability of our unique model that blends purpose with performance to accelerate Africa's economic transformation.”

Young voices make their mark at Africa Children’s Summit 2025

Location: News

Young voices make their mark at Africa Children’s Summit 2025

Children have taken centre stage to address critical issues affecting their lives, from education access to violence prevention, proving that they are not just future leaders but active changemakers.

This is according to the Department of Social Development, which has hosted the Africa Children’s Summit 2025.

Since its opening last week Friday, the summit has brought together some of the brightest and courageous young leaders in person from across Africa, with hundreds joining virtually.

The children who attended in person are from South Africa, South Sudan, DRC, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Ghana, Liberia, Mozambique, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

In a statement, the department said the summit was child-led and child-centred, with its chairperson and programme facilitators all drawn from children invited to the summit.

“Under the theme 'Seen, Heard, and Engaged in Education,' the children have boldly taken centre stage to address critical issues affecting their lives, from education access to violence prevention, proving that they are not just future leaders but active changemakers today,” the department said.

One of the child leaders, 17-year-old Ison Cumbane from Mozambique, captured the spirit of the summit when he said: “Many children don’t have the opportunity to speak about their rights. We are here to give a voice to them and show that we can participate and influence decisions.”

The summit wraps up in Johannesburg today.

The child-led initiative is hosted by the South African Government through the Department of Social Development, in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.

An Outcome Statement will be crafted by the children themselves, which will be handed over to the CEO of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund and other key policymakers.

“The Outcome Statement outlines actionable recommendations for governments and civil society to implement policies that prioritise children’s voices and rights across Africa,” the department said. – SAnews.gov.za

Africa’s Strategic Diplomacy Fuels Mining Sector Growth

Location: News

African nations are leveraging strategic partnerships to attract investment and strengthen their mining sectors. As competition between Western and Eastern powers intensifies over critical minerals, Africa has emerged as a key player in global supply chains, balancing geopolitical interests while maximizing economic benefits. With global markets racing to secure resources for the energy transition and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the upcoming African Mining Week will facilitate collaboration between African governments and international stakeholders.

U.S.–DRC Partnership to Unlock Mineral Wealth

In March 2025, the U.S. State Department reaffirmed (https://apo-opa.co/43JPLr8) its interest in engaging with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to unlock its estimated $1.2 trillion in untapped mineral resources. Cooperation between the two countries could yield a transformative impact on the sector, with U.S. financing and technical expertise unlocking the potential of the world's largest cobalt producer and Africa's largest copper producer. The U.S. has already played an active role in the financing and development of the Lobito Corridor, facilitating mineral transport and trade between the DRC, Angola, Zambia and international markets.

EU Expands Mining, Green Energy Investments

This month, the European Union (EU) pledged €4.7 billion (https://apo-opa.co/42q3265) to South Africa to support raw material value addition, the energy transition, local vaccine manufacturing and green hydrogen production. South Africa, home to the world's largest deposits of platinum group metals (PGMs), will leverage this funding to enhance PGM production to meet growing demand for electrolysers used in green hydrogen applications. This follows South Africa's $1 billion green hydrogen partnership with Denmark and the Netherlands established in 2023. Neighboring Namibia has also attracted European investment, with the EU committing €25 million to Namibia Hydrogen Fund Managers in September 2024 to propel the country's green hydrogen sector. Meanwhile, Uganda is taking steps to develop its mining sector with the support of the EU and Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, having launched the Sustainable Development of the Mining Sector project earlier this month.

China Strengthens its Position in African Mining

China remains one of the largest investors in African mining, with both state-owned and private firms driving sector growth. In September 2024, China pledged $50 billion over three years for infrastructure and mineral development across the continent. Key projects in the DRC include CMOC's $2.5 billion expansion of the Tenke Fungurume Mine and Sinohydro and China Railway's $7 billion infrastructure-for-minerals deal in copper and cobalt mining. China has also invested heavily in Zimbabwe's lithium sector and pledged $1 billion to upgrade the Tazara Railway, improving East Africa's mineral exports.

Growing Global Interest in Africa's Mining Sector

Beyond the U.S., EU and China, countries like Canada, Australia and the UAE are ramping up mining investments in Africa. Canadian firms are expanding their footprint in West Africa's gold sector, Australian companies are backing lithium and rare earth projects in southern Africa and the UAE is securing stakes in critical mineral supply chains through strategic joint ventures. African Mining Week, taking place October 1-3 in Cape Town, will provide a platform for African nations to engage global investors, strengthen cooperation and accelerate resource development.

Top African Projects Driving the Mining-Energy Nexus

Location: News

Mining represents one of the most energy-intensive industries globally. As African nations ramp up mineral extraction to drive economic growth, mining projects and stakeholders are increasingly investing in energy infrastructure to sustain operations and meet rising production targets. Amid efforts to improve grid stability, the upcoming African Mining Week conference will highlight the continent's investment opportunities emerging from the mining-energy nexus.

Northam Bolsters Power Supply for South African Mines

In February 2025, mining firm Northam signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) for 140 MW of wind power to support its platinum group metals operations in Limpopo. This deal follows an earlier PPA signed in October 2024 for an 80 MW solar power facility to supply the company's Zondereinde mine, aimed at driving South Africa's expansion of its PGMs sector. These agreements are part of Northam's broader strategy to enhance energy security and sustainability while reducing its carbon footprint in alignment with national renewable energy goals.

Richards Bay Minerals Expands PPA Portfolio

Richards Bay Minerals, a subsidiary of mining multinational Rio Tinto, signed its third PPA with Red Rocket in February 2025, securing 230 MW of electricity from Red Rocket's 380 MW Overberg Wind Farm. This agreement increases the company's total contracted renewable energy supply to 500 MW and supports Rio Tinto's commitment to reducing emissions by 50% by 2030. Richards Bay Minerals also taps into energy from the 130 MW Bolobedu solar PV plant and 140 MW Khangela Emoyeni wind farm.

Further Investments in Renewables for Mining

Other mining companies across Africa are driving large-scale energy projects to secure a stable power supply. In South Africa, Ivanhoe Mines completed a 5 MW solar facility in Q1 2025 to support its Platreef PGM mine, while Impala Platinum signed a five-year PPA with Discovery Green to supply wheeled renewable energy to its Impala Refineries operation. Meanwhile, commodities firm Trafigura is developing a 2 GW initiative to power Angolan mines, and First Quantum is set to commission a 430 MW project in Zambia in 2025. Tronox Holdings plans to roll out 400 MW of energy projects in South Africa by 2027 and Chinese mining company CMOC is preparing a 200 MW energy project in the DRC, set for commissioning by 2028.

As these investments unfold, African Mining Week will showcase key milestones in energy security for the sector, highlighting lucrative opportunities within Africa's independent power markets. The event will emphasize the growing demand for stable, sustainable energy solutions as miners continue to invest in energy infrastructure.

African Mining Week serves as a premier platform for exploring the full spectrum of mining opportunities across Africa. The event is held alongside the African Energy Week: Invest in African Energies 2025 conference from October 1-3 in Cape Town. SADC’s withdrawal from DRC not a sign of abandonment of peace efforts

SADC’s withdrawal from DRC not a sign of abandonment of peace efforts

Deputy President Paul Mashatile has reiterated that the Southern African Development Community’s (SADC) decision to withdraw the SADC Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC) should not be interpreted as a sign of defeat or abandonment of peace efforts.

“However, it should be seen as a confidence-building measure to ensure peace and stability in the eastern DRC,” the Deputy President told the Members of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) in Parliament, Cape Town on Thursday.

Two weeks ago, SADC announced its decision to withdraw the SAMIDRC force from eastern DRC, opting for a phased withdrawal.

Reports indicate that leaders from the 16-nation SADC have lost at least a dozen soldiers in the eastern DRC since January of this year.

Locally, 14 members of the South African Defence Force (SANDF) lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries as fighting in the Goma region intensified between 23 and 27 January.

These soldiers were part of the SAMIDRC, which aims to help restore peace, security, and stability in Africa’s second-largest country.

Deputy President Paul Mashatile told Members of the NCOP that South Africa remains committed and supportive to ongoing peacekeeping efforts on the continent in line with the country’s foreign policy vision of a “prosperous and peaceful continent”.

“South Africa’s contribution to peace and support operations should not be measured in isolation. As the country participates through missions, mandated and authorised by multilateral institutions such as United Nations and SADC,” he explained.

However, he acknowledged that the recent death of 14 “brave” SANDF soldiers in the DRC is a clear indication of these challenges.

Deputy President Mashatile sent his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased SANDF soldiers and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

The second commander-in-chief stated that South Africa welcomes the appointment of former President Kgalema Motlanthe, who will join a panel of former presidents tasked with mediating peace in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

This decision to include Motlanthe was made during a virtual joint summit of the SADC and the EAC on Monday.

“We welcome the recent progress and commitments made by EAC-SADC, and we also welcome the government of DRC and Rwanda’s commitment to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.

“The President and I will also continue interventions in South Sudan, to try and avert the return to full-scale war and holding of peaceful elections.”

The questions presented before him covered issues related to government’s plans to deliver quality water services to communities across all provinces and the progress achieved in facilitating the settlement of outstanding land claims.

Water

On ensuring quality and reliable water delivery to communities, he stated that water is a fundamental human right as specified in Chapter 2 of the country’s Constitution.

“President Cyril Ramaphosa has established a Water Task Team, which I am chairing, working with Ministers and Water Authorities to provide clean water and sanitation services to all communities.

“In executing its task, the Water Task Team has been conducting outreach programmes, inspections, and oversight visits to assess challenges in communities affected by water supply challenges.”

Land claims

He also addressed the issue of land claims, stating that the government’s commitment to finalising outstanding land claims remains a key priority.

“Over successive years, we have made good progress regarding the settlement of land claims and returning the land to those who were previously dispossessed. However, much more still needs to be done.”

To expedite land access and reform, he announced that the government is focused on concluding restitution cases.

This includes prioritising old-order claims, which will lead to the transfer of secure and legally registered tenure to claimants along with settlement packages.

Meanwhile, he said R11.6 billion will be allocated over the medium term to settle about 844 land restitution claims, with R3 billion earmarked to allocate 138 000 hectares of land. – SAnews.gov.za

SA, DRC strengthen ties amid security concerns

SA, DRC strengthen ties amid security concerns

International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola has met with his counterpart from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Thérèse Kayiwamba Wagner, to enhance bilateral cooperation and address ongoing security challenges.

During the political consultations, Lamola expressed his condolences due to the turmoil affecting the Congolese people, particularly vulnerable groups such as women and children.

“The security situation in the eastern Democratic of the Congo is fragile and is cause for concern. Many people have lost their lives and, millions, especially women and children, have been displaced,” he said on Thursday.

He noted that the United Nations Security Council had convened multiple emergency sessions to address the crisis.

“The United Nations Security Council convened no less than three emergency sessions to review developments in the eastern DRC. Similarly, our regional and continental organisations have also met and called for a ceasefire, an end to hostilities, facilitation of humanitarian assistance, and a return to the peace talks.

“The people of the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo are yearning for peace and normalcy. We dare not fail them.”

South Africa has pledged its unwavering support for peace efforts in the region as it backs ongoing mediation initiatives aimed at achieving a long-term resolution to the conflict.

Lamola highlighted the appointment of former President Kgalema Motlanthe to the mediation team, stressing his extensive political experience as an asset in the quest for peace.

“We have no doubt that with his vast political experience, former President Motlanthe will be an asset to the team,” he added.

Lamola and Wagner, the DRC Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Francophonie, reviewed the state of bilateral relations during their meeting and reflected on the commitments made during the recent Bi-National Commission (BNC) session.

“We should examine progress in our joint efforts of promoting trade and investment between our countries, an area which is critical to the growth of our respective economies and the improvement of the lives and livelihoods of our people.”

As South African companies show increased interest in investing in the DRC, Lamola encouraged both nations to create the necessary conditions for these investments and announced that the country’s development finance institutions are also willing to extend and expand their coverage.

“Working together I am confident that we will create the necessary conditions for these investments to be realised,” he added.

The two countries plan to convene a comprehensive review of BNC outcomes in the coming months, setting the stage for the next session later this year.

Lamola said Wagner’s visit was a testament to the commitment of both nations to foster a stronger partnership.

“Senior officials should be directed to put their shoulders to the wheel to follow through all the tasks that have been agreed to but remain outstanding.”

SA-DRC to hold diplomatic consultations

The Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, will hold political and diplomatic consultations with his counterpart from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Thérèse Kayiwamba Wagner.

Kayiwamba serves as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Francophonie for the DRC.

According to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, the Ministers plan to review the bilateral cooperation between South Africa and the DRC, focusing on commitments made during the 12th Session of the South Africa-DRC Bi-National Commission (BNC) aimed at strengthening this cooperation.

The meeting will take place on Thursday, 27 March 2025, in Pretoria.

Political ties between the two nations date back to 1997 when former President Nelson Mandela facilitated a meeting between the late President Désiré Kabila and Mobutu Sese Seko aboard a South African Navy ship in Pointe-Noire, Congo-Brazzaville.

Formal bilateral relations between South Africa and the DRC were established in 1992.

The department stated that these relationships are mainly conducted through the BNC, which was established in 2004.

The last session of the BNC took place in Kinshasa, DRC, on 6 July 2023. South Africa is scheduled to host the 13th session of the BNC.

“Since then, South Africa and the DRC have significantly strengthened their bilateral cooperation across various sectors, culminating in the signing of 38 bilateral agreements and Memoranda of Understanding.”

These legal instruments cover a broad spectrum of areas, including agriculture, defence, trade and investment, health, policing, energy, public service and administration, cooperative governance, transport, diplomatic cooperation, and immigration.
Meanwhile, the department said South Africa has significant investments in the DRC and is the second largest source of imports for the country.

“Many South African multinational companies have a large footprint in the country in several sectors, including, among others, infrastructure development, financial services, mining, construction and property development, retail, and so on,” the department added. – SAnews.gov.za

South Africa-European Union Summit concludes

Location: News

South Africa-European Union Summit concludes

President Cyril Ramaphosa has welcomed the European Union’s €4.7 billion Global Gateway Investment Package aimed at supporting strategic investment projects.

The President was speaking during a press briefing following the 8th South Africa-European Union Summit held in Cape Town on Thursday.

The package is aimed at supporting:
•    A clean and just energy transition in South Africa
•    Digital and physical connectivity infrastructure
•    The local pharmaceutical industry.

“The investment package covers areas such as critical raw mineral processing, green hydrogen, renewable energy, transport and digital infrastructure, local vaccine and pharmaceutical production, and resources for skills development.

“To boost the competitiveness of our economies, we agreed to launch negotiations towards a Clean Trade and Investment Partnership. This will support the development of cleaner value chains for raw materials and local beneficiation, renewable and low carbon energy, and clean technology,” President Ramaphosa said.

Furthermore, the partnership will also serve as a platform for “regulatory cooperation between the European Union and South Africa in areas of mutual interest related to clean supply chains”.

“This partnership is expected, for example, to deliver short and long term solutions to enable Sasol to export sustainable fuel, especially aviation fuel, to the European Union,” the President added.

Strengthening ties

President Ramaphosa noted that the summit – the first such held in seven years – reflects mutual commitment to “enhancing our Strategic Partnership for the mutual benefit of our people”.

As a regional bloc, the European Union (EU) is South Africa’s biggest trading partner recording some €49.5 billion in total trade in 2023 with EU foreign direct investment into South Africa reaching around €71 billion in 2022.

“Today’s Summit focused on strengthening our trade and investment relations, which are vital for the growth of our economies and the achievement of our development goals,” the President noted.

Discussions also focussed on other areas including green energy, science and health.

“We have prioritised the transition to green energy, ensuring that this process is just and inclusive and safeguards the livelihoods of those most affected by the transition. We also had discussions on our robust cooperation in education; science, technology and innovation; and health.

“We have recognised the vital importance of developing the skills and capabilities of young people, starting from early childhood development through to the training of young people in the skills of the future,” President Ramaphosa explained.

Global developments

On the global stage, President Ramaphosa said, “we reaffirmed our commitment to multilateralism, the rule of law and the central role of the United Nations in maintaining global peace and security”.

“We also expressed our resolve to resist actions that undermine multilateral cooperation. We reinforced our belief that the institutions of global governance must be reformed to make them representative and fit for purpose.

“We agreed that addressing the root causes of conflict is essential for achieving durable peace, security and stability in Africa.”

Turning to the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), President Ramaphosa said South Africa calls on parties to assist in addressing the “dire situation of the people” caught in the blaze of the war.

“As South Africa, we have made a call for a humanitarian intervention for displaced people in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

“As we work to achieve a ceasefire and achieve a peaceful resolution of the conflict in the DRC, we are calling on the United Nations, African Union and EU to help to address the dire situation of the people affected by the fighting,” he said.
Reflecting on the outcomes of the Summit, President Ramaphosa described it as having further strengthened the strategic partnership.

“Today’s Summit has further strengthened our Strategic Partnership, which will support our efforts to drive inclusive economic growth, create jobs, eradicate poverty and address global challenges in a spirit of solidarity, collaboration and partnership.

“On behalf of the Government and people of South Africa, it has been a pleasure to host you today, reaffirming our commitment to building strong, mutually beneficial relations with the European Union,” President Ramaphosa concluded.

In his opening remarks at the summit, the President said that as one of South Africa’s most important trade and investment partners, the European Union can play a catalytic role in unleashing the productive capacity of our economy and equip our people, especially the youth, to participate in the economy of the future.

WHO Injects Fresh Support Into DRC Vaccination Drive

Location: News

UN News

The UN World Health Organization (WHO) has stepped up efforts to improve vaccination coverage in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) by providing vital logistical support, including boats and motorcycles to reach remote communities along the Congo River.

The initiative aims to curb the spread of preventable diseases such as polio, measles and yellow fever which remain a persistent threat in hard-to-reach areas.

Speedy response

WHO delivered 79 outboard motors, two speedboats, 14 motorcycles and other essential equipment worth $750,000 to the country's Ministry of Public Health to expand vaccination campaigns in 89 health zones in nine provinces, the agency said in a news release on Tuesday (in French).

“These boats and vehicles will allow health workers to quickly reach children and communities who have long been cut off from essential services,” said Boureima Hama Sambo, WHO Representative in the DRC.

“This will significantly reduce the number of missed vaccinations and ensure that no child is left vulnerable to diseases that we can prevent.”

Fighting preventable diseases

The Congo River and its many tributaries form a vast network of isolated islands and remote settlements, particularly in provinces such as Équateur, Mongala, Tanganyika and Tshopo.

Many of these areas host large numbers of unvaccinated children, leading to repeated outbreaks of polio, measles and yellow fever, according to WHO.

In 2024, the DRC confirmed 25 cases of circulating variant poliovirus (types 1 and 2) and reported more than 102,500 suspected measles cases, resulting in over 2,200 deaths. Meningitis also remains a major concern, with 5,837 suspected cases and 465 deaths last year.

The WHO and DRC authorities have been working to address these challenges through mass immunization campaigns.

“Improving the availability of vaccines and other vital health supplies in the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) branches, health zones and areas, is essential to strengthening the health system and implementing advanced and mobile vaccination strategies. Integration with other health services will make a difference, bringing significant benefits to the most vulnerable populations,” said Dr. Sambo.

Ongoing Mpox outbreak

Even as the country battles vaccine-preventable diseases, the DRC continues to face a large mpox outbreak. Between 1 January and 2 March 2025, the country recorded 2,415 confirmed cases, with 1,080 of them occurring in the last six weeks alone.

WHO has declared the mpox resurgence a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) and warned that the virus is circulating in at least ten provinces.

The outbreak is being fuelled by sustained human-to-human transmission, particularly in the capital, Kinshasa, where genomic sequencing indicates that one specific strain has persisted since July 2024.

Impact of violence

Complicating response efforts is the ongoing violence in the eastern DRC, which disrupted healthcare services and made it difficult to track and contain the virus. In February, the virus was detected for the first time in the south-central Lomami province, expanding its reach further.

The WHO is also monitoring new travel-related mpox cases that have emerged outside the country, including in Belgium, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Meanwhile, South Africa has reported its first cluster of mpox cases linked to the same strain circulating in the DRC.

Totalenergies’ Mike Sangster to Headline Invest in African Energy Forum in Paris

Location: News
Energy Capital & Power

Mike Sangster, Senior Vice President for Africa at TotalEnergies, will deliver a keynote address at the Invest in African Energy (IAE) Forum in Paris this May. Sangster will also participate in an exclusive fireside chat, offering critical insights into the company's vision for Africa's energy future, its ongoing projects and the evolving role of oil and gas in the continent's energy mix.

TotalEnergies continues to drive oil and gas development across Africa, with a strong focus on both emerging and mature markets. In Namibia, the company is advancing its Venus-1 discovery, targeting first oil by the decade's end, with an FID expected in early 2026 for a development producing 150,000 barrels per day. TotalEnergies is also exploring additional prospects in the Orange Basin, having recently drilled the Marula-1X and Tabmoti-1X wells. In the Republic of Congo, the company is investing $600 million to expand deepwater production at the Moho Nord field, while in Libya, it plans to complete an onshore exploration project and lead new drilling campaigns in the Waha and Sharara fields in 2025.

IAE 2025 (www.Invest-Africa-Energy.com) is an exclusive forum designed to facilitate investment between African energy markets and global investors. Taking place May 13-14, 2025 in Paris, the event offers delegates two days of intensive engagement with industry experts, project developers, investors and policymakers. For more information, please visit www.Invest-Africa-Energy.com. To sponsor or participate as a delegate, please contact sales@energycapitalpower.com.

Meanwhile, TotalEnergies is expanding its gas processing and midstream infrastructure across Africa, strengthening its role in the continent's evolving energy landscape. In Mozambique, the company is progressing with the Mozambique LNG project, a $20 billion development expected to secure renewed financial backing from export credit agencies. I Uganda, TotalEnergies is gearing up for first oil from its Tilenga field in 2025, with crude transported via the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP). Once operational, EACOP will be the longest heated crude oil pipeline globally, significantly enhancing East Africa's ability to monetize its hydrocarbon resources and attract further investment into the region's energy sector.

TotalEnergies is also expanding its renewable energy footprint in Africa through strategic investments in solar, wind, hydropower and green hydrogen. The company is advancing its 500 MW Sadada solar project in Libya and acquired Scatec's hydropower portfolio on the continent in July 2024, including the 250 MW Bujagali Hydropower Plant in Uganda and stakes in projects in Malawi, Rwanda and the DRC. In South Africa, TotalEnergies is constructing a 216 MW solar plant with battery storage, along with a 140 MW wind farm and a 120 MW solar facility, set to supply green electricity to Sasol's industrial operations. In Morocco, the company is developing the Chbika project, a 1 GW wind and solar farm designed to produce 200,000 metric tons of green ammonia annually for export to Europe. These initiatives align with TotalEnergies' strategy to integrate renewables into its portfolio while supporting Africa's energy transition.

Sangster's participation at IAE 2025 comes at a pivotal time for Africa's energy sector, as investors and policymakers navigate a shifting global energy landscape. His keynote address and fireside chat will provide valuable perspectives on the role of private investment in African energy, strategies for unlocking new upstream opportunities and how TotalEnergies is adapting to the continent's long-term energy needs.

KZN aims to attract investment while also creating jobs

KZN aims to attract investment while also creating jobs

The KwaZulu-Natal province aims to secure an additional R4 billion in investments in the 2025/26 financial year and create 5 000 potential jobs, Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli said on Friday.

This is after the KZN Investment Conference held in November 2024 resulted in R75.8 billion in investment pledges, including major projects like the Westown mixed-use development in Shongweni and SAPPI Southern Africa upgrades.

Delivering the State of the Province Address (SOPA), the Premier outlined a bold future for the province.

Ntuli began by honouring the memory of citizens lost to recent floods and heavy rains, as well as soldiers who died in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

READ | KZN flood victims moved to temporary accommodation

He stressed the province’s resilience and commitment to overcoming challenges, including high unemployment, poverty, and the impacts of global crises.

Ntuli also highlighted significant achievements over the past eight months and outlined strategic priorities for the coming year.

The Premier also detailed the ongoing and upcoming infrastructure projects, including upgrades to the N3 and N2 highways, the construction of new dams, and the expansion of the Dube Trade Port and Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone.

According to Ntuli, these projects are expected to create thousands of jobs and boost the local economy.

Meanwhile, the King Dinuzulu Innovation Valley at Dube TradePort, set to open in June 2025, will serve as a hub for technological advancement and entrepreneurship.

The province is also rolling out broadband connectivity projects to ensure high-speed internet access for all citizens.

He also emphasised the province’s commitment to reducing poverty and the rising cost of living which remains as a persistent challenge for many families across the province.

Initiatives include social grants, support for child-headed households, and efforts to combat gender-based violence, while also focusing on youth and women empowerment through various programmes and funds.

“Poverty and the rising cost of living remains a persistent challenge for many families across KwaZulu-Natal. While social assistance remains a necessary lifeline for many of our people, this trajectory is not sustainable.”

Instead, he believes government should build a nation where economic opportunities replace dependency, where employment and entrepreneurship empower people, and where prosperity is driven by innovation and productivity.

The Premier also noted the province’s record-breaking 2024 matric pass rate of 89.5% and improvements in healthcare services, including the purchase of new ambulances and the expansion of the school nutrition programme.

Meanwhile, he stated that efforts to improve school infrastructure and reduce dropout rates are also underway.

Ntuli reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to building a capable, ethical, and developmental State. This includes strengthening public institutions, enhancing service delivery, and rooting out corruption.

Spaza shops

Meanwhile, he said from 14 October to 14 November 2024, the provincial government conducted unannounced inspections of spaza shops and wholesale businesses.

“What we uncovered was deeply concerning. It became abundantly clear that economic activity in many of these areas has shifted away from our local entrepreneurs, with some businesses operating in direct violation of our laws – engaging in illicit trade and other criminal activities that threaten the well-being of our communities.”

A joint operation was conducted, resulting in the inspection of 7 729 premises and as a result, 337 premises were closed, and 142 arrests were made.

In addition, 2 429 compliance notices and 480 fines were issued, alongside the confiscation of 10 210 kg of illicit goods.

“It is our firm belief that the township and rural economy in KwaZulu-Natal plays a vital role in both economic growth and job creation for local communities, with substantial value and employment opportunities across informal sectors like spaza shops, street vendors, and small-scale manufacturing.”

READ | Deadline won't be extended for spaza shops to register

Today marks the deadline for spaza shop and other food handling to register their businesses with their local municipalities.

He called on all citizens and stakeholders to work together towards a prosperous and inclusive future for KwaZulu-Natal.

“The future calls, and we must answer with action, integrity, and unwavering dedication to the service of our nation, “ he said. – SAnews.gov.za

Cabinet sends best wishes for injured SANDF troops

Cabinet sends best wishes for injured SANDF troops

Cabinet has extended its heartfelt wishes for a quick recovery to all soldiers returning from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) who are currently receiving medical treatment in South Africa.

“Cabinet expressed its well wishes for a speedy recovery for all 1returned injured soldiers who are now receiving medical treatment in South Africa, the home soil,” Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said on Thursday.

This as the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) announced earlier in the week that the remaining wounded troops in need of medical attention had been successfully repatriated from the DRC and would now receive necessary care and support.

READ | Critically injured soldiers in DRC brought back home

The injured soldiers have been categorised into three priority areas for care – critical, non-critical, and those requiring psychological and social interventions.

This is after 14 troop members lost their lives and others sustained injuries at the hands of the M23 as fighting in the Goma region escalated.

The rebel group fought intensely against the Congolese armed forces, resulting in the deaths of soldiers from 23 to 27 January during M23’s advance on Sake and Goma.

These soldiers were part of the Southern African Development Community Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC), which aims to help restore peace, security, and stability in Africa’s second-largest country.

At a post-Cabinet briefing in Cape Town, Ntshavheni announced that the Executive supports the resolutions from both the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) and the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) concerning the eastern DRC.

The AUPSC endorsed decisions from the Joint East African Community (EAC) and SADC meeting, which called for an immediate ceasefire, safe humanitarian routes, the withdrawal of uninvited forces, respect for territorial integrity, and the inclusion of all actors in the joint Luanda-Nairobi political dialogue.

“UNSC resolution urged all parties – State and non-State actors in the eastern DRC to conclude an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, as called for by leaders of the EAC and SADC.”

According to the Minister, the resolution further demands that M23 rebel groups withdraw from the territories they have seized in the eastern DRC and called on the Rwanda Defence Forces to stop supporting the armed group and immediately withdraw from Congolese territory “without preconditions.” – SAnews.gov.za

Cabinet reiterates SA’s commitment to ensuring stability in the DRC

Cabinet has reiterated South Africa’s commitment to a diplomatic solution that ensures stability in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), while also protecting the well-being of the Congolese people.

In a statement on Friday, Cabinet paid tribute to the 14 gallant South African soldiers who were killed recently in the DRC while undertaking a United Nations (UN)-backed peacekeeping mission.

“These brave soldiers had been deployed in the country as part of the Southern African Development Community Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC) and the UN Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO),” Cabinet said following its meeting on 12 February and a Special Cabinet meeting on 29 January.

Cabinet affirmed that South Africa would continue to play its peacekeeping mission role and support other African countries whose solidarity, and material support helped secure the country’s liberation.

Cabinet was updated on the recent developments in the eastern DRC and called on all parties to embrace current diplomatic efforts aimed at finding a peaceful resolution.

The parties were also called to adhere to calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities and restoration of essential utilities.

Cabinet further welcomed efforts by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) leaders, aimed at finding a resolution to the conflict and facilitating the repatriation of the deceased and injured soldiers of South Africa, Malawi and Tanzania.

The remains of the 14 South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers who died in the eastern DRC were returned home last week and handed over to their families during a memorial service, held at Swartkop Air Force Base in Centurion.

“The outcome of the Heads of State Summit held in Tanzania on 8 February 2025 on the conflict also provides a beacon of hope for the troubled eastern DRC,” Cabinet said.

Foreign Ministers’ Meeting backs SA’s G20 Presidency priorities

Location: News

Foreign Ministers’ Meeting backs SA’s G20 Presidency priorities

The Group of 20 (G20) Foreign Ministers have thrown their weight behind South Africa’s Presidency priorities, which focus on sustainable development and debt sustainability for low-income countries among others.

Other priorities of South Africa’s G20 Presidency are strengthening disaster resilience; mobilising finance for a Just Energy Transition; and harnessing critical minerals for inclusive growth and development.

This is according to the International Relations and Cooperation Minister, Ronald Lamola, who addressed the media at the conclusion of the first Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on Friday.

The Minister said the two-day meeting which began on Thursday at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg, was productive.

“Let me first express South Africa’s deep appreciation to you all for what has been a very productive First Foreign Ministers’ Meeting under South Africa’s G20 Presidency. I further thank the members of the G20 Troika, Brazil and the United States of America for their support and cooperation during our G20 Presidency,” said the Minister.

The meeting also outlined Task Force One’s focus on inclusive economic growth, industrialisation, employment, and reducing inequality.

Task Force Two focuses on food security, while Task Force Three addresses artificial intelligence, data, governance, and sustainable development innovation.

“Furthermore, we have proposed the additional initiatives – the review of the work of the G20, a cost of capital review, a broadened compact with Africa 2.0, and an initiative on critical minerals,” said the Minister.

South Africa also took note of the fruitful discussions and inputs on the various priorities and high-level deliverables which will enrich various streams of work during 2025.

“We can assure you that all the views expressed will be considered as we progress with our work during this year. We look forward to the active participation and contributions of all your delegations,” the Minister added.

He said the Ministers reaffirmed G20 as the premier forum for international economic cooperation.

The gathering also stressed the G20’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), highlighting the need for urgent action to accelerate efforts to reaffirm the group’s strong commitment to the SDGs in line with South Africa's theme of “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability”.

The leaders also noted the impact of ongoing conflicts on economic development and the attainment of SDGs, with a focus on sustainable investments in conflict prevention and peacebuilding.

“Concerning the ongoing conflicts and wars in Africa, the Middle East and Europe, the meeting reiterated that all states must act in a manner consistent with the Purposes and Principles of the UN [United Nations] Charter.”

Guided by international law, Lamola announced that there was an agreement to support all efforts towards a just peace in Ukraine, Palestine, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and other major conflicts around the globe.

The leaders also touched on the importance of elevating African voices in the G20 and addressing pressing global challenges.

The Minister also underscored the need to reform the international system of global governance, inclusive of the international financial architecture, the multilateral trading system, and the multilateral development banks.

The meeting “further stressed the need to reform the United Nations to make it fit for purpose and relevant to the current international reality. This includes the Security Council.”

Also under discussion was the importance of multilateralism, the need for the reform of the UN and the upcoming Financing for Development Conference in Seville, Spain and the UN Climate Change Conference (COP) in Belém, Brazil.

“South Africa undertook to present a four-stage roadmap of this proposed G20 review, including a briefing on the proposed approach and survey methodology which will involve the participation of G20 members, guest countries and invited stakeholders.”
According to the Minister, the final report will be presented for adoption at the final G20 Sherpa meeting taking place from 16 to 19 November 2025.

President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the opening of the meeting on Thursday where he urged global leaders to embrace inclusivity, cooperation and reform as South Africa steers the Presidency of the G20 for the first time.

SA expresses concern over conflict situations

International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola has emphasised that military solutions are ineffective in resolving conflicts.

He called on the Group of 20 (G20) nations to persist in advocating for peaceful resolutions through negotiation and dialogue.

In addition, Lamola has expressed South Africa’s growing concern over the deteriorating conflict situations in various regions of Africa, particularly highlighting the challenges in Sudan and the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

South Africa recently lost 14 brave soldiers at the hands of the M23 as fighting in the Goma region escalated.
The rebel group fought intensely against the Congolese armed forces, resulting in the deaths of soldiers from 23 to 27 January during M23’s advance on Sake and Goma.

The soldiers are part of the Southern African Development Community Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC), which aims to help restore peace, security, and stability in Africa’s second-largest country.

“We call on the support of the G20 in our quest to silence the guns in Africa for the attainment of inclusive development and prosperity.”

Lamola addressed the attendees at the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Nasrec, Johannesburg, while President Cyril Ramaphosa officially opened the gathering.

He also took the time to note “satisfaction” with the current efforts being made on various fronts to end the devastating conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine.

“We should all play our part in ensuring the success of these ongoing initiatives. We should also recommit to advancing the goal of a world free of nuclear weapons.”

He urged the group to focus on addressing critical debt sustainability weaknesses in the international debt system, including high financing costs and prioritising debt service payments over essential development needs, to mitigate the negative impacts of debt distress.

“Building on G20 initiatives undertaken in recent years, we should advance sustainable solutions to tackle high structural deficits and liquidity challenges and extend debt relief to developing economies.”

He encouraged other Ministers to back South Africa’s approach to geo-political issues, recommending discussions only among Sherpas, Foreign Ministers, and leaders to develop consensus-based strategies for peace and human development.

“We also like to caution against focusing exclusively on one conflict situation, to the exclusion of others, especially on the African continent, as has been the practice in the recent past.”

He reminded leaders that the United Nations (UN) remains the appropriate forum for maintaining peace and security, supported by other institutions of global governance.

“We hope that this group continues to play a constructive role in supporting relevant regional and international bodies, such as the AU [African Union], which are central to achieving sustainable development and that the core mandate of the G20 should remain that of promoting economic growth and development.”

Lamola believes that widening geopolitical divisions are at the centre of the crisis.

These divisions, he stressed, have contributed to fostering a climate of distrust, which threatens to unravel the progress made in addressing pressing global challenges such as deepening poverty, resolving armed conflict, climate change, pandemics, and nuclear proliferation.

He said South Africa is committed to collaborating with all G20 members to advance the forum’s work and to play a bridge-building role while preserving the group’s unity during its Presidency.

“It is our firm view that the unity of the group will be key to reaching consensus on this Presidency’s priorities and deliverables,” Lamola added. – SAnews.gov.za

SA, EU strengthen strategic partnership at Ministerial Dialogue

South Africa and the European Union (EU) have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening their strategic partnership during the 16th Session of the Ministerial Political Dialogue on Wednesday in Cape Town.

International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola, along with the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas, co-chaired the dialogue in the context of the EU-South Africa Strategic Partnership.

“The EU-South Africa Ministerial Political Dialogue builds on the joint aspiration to further the strategic partnership, which has grown in depth and ambition over the years.

“The political and security cooperation is strong, and so are trade and investment relations: South Africa is the EU’s largest trading partner in sub-Saharan Africa, and the EU is South Africa’s first trade and investment partner,” a joint communique said.

The meeting was also attended by Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau, Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuizen, Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gawarube and Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Blade Nzimande.

The High Representative’s three-day visit to Africa at the beginning of her mandate signals the EU’s commitment to the partnership with South Africa and with the continent.

The Ministerial Political Dialogue is a key milestone ahead of the 8th European Union-South Africa Summit, which is scheduled for 13 March 2025.

The political engagements between the European Union and South Africa contribute to the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the European Union’s partnership with Africa.

In this context, both sides underscored the importance of holding the European Union- African Union Ministerial Meeting and Summit in 2025.

“The Ministerial Political Dialogue presented an opportunity for the European Union and South Africa to reiterate their common commitment to multilateralism, a consistent approach to the rules-based international order, and the centrality of the United Nations Charter.

“The parties further agreed on the need to reform the UN Security Council, recognising the urgent need to make it more representative, inclusive, transparent, efficient, democratic and accountable,” a joint communique said.

Addressing global conflicts, both sides affirmed their unwavering commitment to act in accordance with international law, including the Charter of the United Nations and its purposes and principles.

Both sides noted with distress the immense human suffering and the adverse impact of wars and conflicts around the world.

The parties also reaffirmed that all states must act in a manner consistent with the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter in its entirety.

“In line with the UN Charter, all states must refrain from the threat or use of force to seek territorial acquisition against the territorial integrity and sovereignty or political independence of any state and affirmed that all parties in conflicts must comply with their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law and international human rights law,” the joint communique said.

Both sides further agreed that, guided by these principles, to support efforts towards a just peace in Ukraine, Occupied Palestinian Territory, Sudan, the DRC and other major conflicts around the globe.

The European Union and South Africa also discussed their cooperation in multilateral and regional fora, focusing in particular on their joint efforts to promote human rights and sustainable development and to address climate change.

The European Union emphasised its alignment with and support for South Africa G20’s presidency priorities.

In view of the Summit, the European Union and South Africa also looked at their economic, trade and investment agenda, including outstanding issues on both sides.

“Underlining the importance of a just energy transition, the European Union and South Africa reviewed opportunities to step up cooperation on sustainable value chains, including critical raw materials with a view to further their respective competitiveness, economic security and decarbonisation efforts.

“The parties agreed that critical minerals have emerged as a pivotal topic on the global stage, reflecting a critical role in driving industrialisation, technological innovation, and inclusive economic growth. South Africa underscored the need for the transition to a low carbon economy to be just, enhance energy security and create jobs. The two sides acknowledged the role of regulatory cooperation, investment facilitation, as well as of businesses in driving these initiatives,” the joint communique said.

The European Union and South Africa further welcomed the robust collaboration in the areas of education, research and innovation.

Both sides discussed opportunities to further enhance cooperation on open science and nuclear medical applications, to ensure progress on South Africa joining the Clean Hydrogen Mission of Mission Innovation.

This is to broaden the participation of South Africa in the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (R&I) Horizon Europe and in the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions as well as to promote mobility and cooperation through Erasmus+.

The European Union and South Africa further agreed that international trade is an important engine for inclusive economic growth, combating poverty and hunger and promoting sustainable development and the SDGs.

“The EU and South Africa also stressed that for trade and investment to act as a driver of global growth, well-being and prosperity, a transparent rules-based multilateral trading system, that is non-discriminatory, fair, open, inclusive, equitable and sustainable is a necessity. Both sides reaffirmed that the WTO must be at the core such a multilateral trading system,” said the joint communique.  – SAnews.gov.za
