The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Transport, Mr Donald Selamolela, has sent heartfelt condolences to the families of those who perished in the Eastern Cape minibus taxi crash on Sunday.

He said it was with sadness that so many people perished in this manner. According to media reports, 15 people died in a head-on collision on the R63 outside Fort Beaufort, en route to Adelaide. The accident occurred after midnight on Sunday, when a minibus taxi collided with a van.

Mr Selamolela said: “We had begun to see results in our road safety plans this past Easter weekend and then sadly this happened. It is with great sadness that we have to bow in loss of these innocent lives who did not deserve to pass like this.”

He added: “South Africans deserve better and we will not tire in making the calls for all road users to always be vigilant and always ensure the safety of others at all times on the road.”

Mr Selamolela reiterated that road safety is everyone's business.

On behalf of the Government and people of South Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa offers his deep condolences to Catholics in South Africa and globally on the passing of the Holy Father Pope Francis.

Aged 88, the Pope passed away early today, Monday, 21 April 2025, at his Vatican residence, the Casa Santa Marta.

President Ramaphosa said: “Catholics and people of all faiths are saddened today by the passing of a spiritual leader who sought to unite humanity and wished to see a world governed by fundamental human values.

“As the leader of the Church and a global figurehead, Pope Francis advanced a world view of inclusion, equality and care for marginalised individuals and groups, as well as responsible and sustainable custody of the natural environment.

“His extraordinary life story and ascendancy to the Holy See unfolded with humility and a profound commitment to making the Church and the world a better place for all of humanity.

“Following so soon after the celebration of Easter, Pope Francis' passing will extend this traditional period of prayer and reflection, which will unite the Church and the international community in reflecting on the Holy Father's life and legacy.”

BMA Commissioner to monitor movements at Lebombo ahead of Easter weekend

BMA Commissioner to monitor movements at Lebombo ahead of Easter weekend

The Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), Dr Michael Masiapato, will be on the ground to monitor the accelerated security control measures at the Lebombo port of entry before the Easter holidays. 

As the third law enforcement service in the Republic, the BMA has also deployed drones and body-worn cameras for additional technological support. 

Masiapato will monitor deployments and traveller movements. 

Most of the ports not operating for 24 hours have adjusted their service hours for the Easter holidays. 

“Commissioner Masiapato will be in Lebombo from 15 to 18 April 2025, while most travellers are exiting the country before the Easter holidays. Deputy Commissioner Jane Thupana will be in Beitbridge from 16 to 17 April 2025,” said the BMA in a statement.

For the return leg when most travellers return from the Easter holidays, the BMA Commissioner will be at the Beitbridge port of entry from 20 to 22 April 2025.  – SAnews.gov.za

Technology to aid SA’s border management efforts  

Four advanced unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly known as drones and 40 body-worn cameras will be deployed for the first time at the country’s ports of entry over the coming Easter long weekend.

The drones are equipped with some of the most advanced night vision cameras in the world, including thermal detection technology.

Powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI), the devices are able to recognise and lock onto heat sources, moving people, or vehicles. They can also travel at speeds up to 43 kilometres per hour and are capable of operating in remote rural areas without access to GPS and even underground.

Speaking at a media briefing on Thursday, Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber said the launch of technology marks the biggest step forward for enhancing border security and management.

“Data shows that when we first trialled the use of drones over the festive season, the number of attempted illegal crossings that were successfully prevented, increased by 215%,” said the Minister.

He added that the Border Management Authority (BMA) will now permanently deploy this cutting-edge technology on a fulltime basis.

“Our message to would-be illegal immigrants and smugglers is clear. We are now watching the borderline during the day, we are watching at night, we can see your body heat wherever you try to hide, and we will catch you. 

“As we roll out more and more cutting-edge technology, there are fewer and fewer places to hide for criminals who undermine our national security,” he said.

Schreiber explained that the cameras will be fitted to officials working in the port environment to detect and punish acts of corruption, while also monitoring the efficiency of officials.

“Importantly, the cameras are linked to a dedicated Digital Evidence Management System which ensures that all footage is admissible in court to ensure successful convictions.”

BMA Commissioner Dr Micheal Masiapato said the 2025 Easter Operation follows the successfully implemented 2024/25 Festive Season Plan which saw a steady increase of 5 084 251 travellers processed across 71 ports of entry.

“This plan builds on the successes and lessons learned from our previous operations, ensuring the advancement of robust mechanisms for safe and secure travel,” Masiapato said.

Heightened operations

Speaking at the media briefing in Pretoria, the Commissioner said that through the assistance of drone technology, previous deployments in the December-January operations were responsive and reactional to illegal movements.

“The increase in festive season movements prompted the BMA to officially begin with the Easter Planning Phase on the 1st of February 2025 through to the 14th of April 2025. 

“The Execution phase of the BMA’s Easter Operational Plan will run for a period of 10 days starting from the 15th to the 24th of April 2025, during which period deployments and intensified border operations will be heightened.
“We are here to serve the citizens of the country to deter any illegality at our ports of entry and border law enforcement area without fear or favour,” he said.

Masiapato said the Easter period is traditionally characterised by a significant spike in the movement of people and goods across the country’s ports, placing increased demand on the BMA to maintain optimal operational readiness.

“During this period, families travel for religious observances, holidays, and cultural gatherings, while traders and transporters increase activity in preparation for the long Easter weekend. 

“With the expected increase in attendance from the Zion Christian Church in Limpopo, more travellers are expected to move from our neighbouring countries into South Africa. These heightened activities bring both opportunities and risks, requiring a concerted and integrated operational response,” he said.

The BMA is undertaking training to equip eight officers to become expert drone pilots. They will operate the devices on a shift basis and will move around different ports in the country. – SAnews.gov.za

Communities along Vaal River floodlines urged to evacuate

Water and Sanitation Minister, Pemmy Majodina, has urged residents residing along the floodlines of the Vaal River to evacuate the area and those who have already relocated not to return to their homes.

Majodina, accompanied by Deputy Minister David Mahlobo, conducted a site visit to the Vaal Dam on Wednesday to assess the condition of water resource infrastructure following significant inflows into the dam due to persistent rainfall across the Vaal River Catchment.

The Minister was joined by Rand Water Chairperson Ramateu Monyokolo and Chief Executive Officer Sipho Mosai, and the provincial heads of Gauteng, Free State, and North West, Justice Maluleke, Tseliso Ntili, and Luxolo Mditshane, respectively.

Majodina warned that low-lying areas downstream of the Vaal and Bloemhof Dams, remain vulnerable due to the release of water through open sluice gates, which are being used to manage water levels.

“During heavy rains and high inflows into dams, the department implement flood management protocols through controlled water releases to ensure the safety of water resource infrastructure (dams and barrages); protection of downstream communities as such, minimise loss of human lives and livelihoods, destruction of property and disruption of services; and to ensure that the dams are full at the end of the flood season,” Majodina said.

Since 3 March 2025, the Department of Water and Sanitation has been gradually releasing water from both dams through sluice gates and valves to maintain structural integrity and reduce flood risk.

Currently, five sluice gates at both the Vaal and Bloemhof Dams have been opened to manage the increased inflows.

Speaking from the Vaal Dam wall, Majodina assured the public that bulk water supply remains stable, and that the department is working closely with the municipalities to manage water reticulation to ensure that the citizens of South Africa have access to potable water from their taps.

The Minister warned residents who encroach upon flood lines to move to a safe area and to remove valuable equipment, including movable infrastructure, and livestock.

She appealed to religious groups and the general public to avoid large bodies of water, as strong currents pose significant danger.

“We want to make a plea and strong caution to people on the flood line; it may not be raining in your area, but because of the tributaries that flow into the dam, high volumes of water could reach your locality and wash away your homes. We also call on churches to be aware of the dangers of strong tides due to the open gates.

“Water currents are not always visible on the surface and can be difficult to detect, making them hazardous. As we approach Easter, let us be cautious regarding water activities that may endanger lives,” the Minister advised.

Mahlobo said living near large bodies of water was visually appealing; however, there was a boundary that should not be crossed for safety reasons.

"A flood line has a red line that should not be crossed, and when water volumes increase, there is a risk to residents and their properties. We cannot be held responsible for decisions made by individuals who cross that red line," Mahlobo said.

Vaal and Bloemhof Dams status

The department reported that the five sluice gates remain opened with an outflow of 793 cubic metres per second (mᵌ/s) at the Vaal Dam and water levels are currently at 114.61% as at this morning.

“At Bloemhof Dam, levels have gone down from last night’s (Tuesday) 116% to 111% this morning (Wednesday) and water levels continue to decline. As such, the Department has reduced outflows from 3000 mᵌ/s by this afternoon to 2500 mᵌ/s”.

The Department of Water and Sanitation continues to monitor the situation and will provide regular updates. Residents are urged to follow instructions from local authorities and disaster management teams. – SAnews.gov.za

With the Easter long weekend fast approaching, Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille has called on local and international travelers alike to explore the country’s breathtaking landscapes, rich culture and vibrant communities.

De Lille launched the Easter campaign with an activation at Twin Venture, which is based at the Atlantis Dunes in Cape Town, specialising in quad biking and sandboarding experiences. 

The activation was aimed at showcasing the variety of experiences for visitors across South Africa, especially in smaller towns.

Speaking at the event on Monday, which was attended by tourism business owners, industry associations, media and content creators, De Lille emphasised the importance of both domestic and international travel in sustaining and growing the tourism sector.

Domestic tourism: A growing market

Domestic tourism in South Africa continues to perform well, with travellers increasingly looking for affordable and unique experiences. 

Recent insights from the 2024 Sho’t Left Travel Week campaign highlighted key trends shaping local travel, including:

-                Affordability remains a priority. Travelers are looking for more budget-friendly accommodation and experiences, making initiatives like Sho’t Left vital in ensuring more South Africans can explore their own country.

-               Lesser-known destinations are in demand. More South Africans are seeking off-the-beaten-path adventures, opting for places with fewer crowds and deeper cultural experiences.

-               Personalised travel experiences are key. Families, solo travellers, seniors, and adventure-seekers are all looking for tailored travel options, including accessible tourism and wellness retreats.

International tourism on the rise

International visitors remain a key part of South Africa’s tourism strategy. In the first two months of 2025 alone, the country welcomed nearly 1.8 million international visitors, an increase of 4.7% compared to the same period last year.

“International travellers are drawn to South Africa for its diverse cultures, breath-taking landscapes, and warm hospitality. We must continue showcasing what makes our country special and keep igniting the spirit of exploration,” De Lille said.

Police in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested 11 780 suspects for various crimes while also recovering 341 firearms and 3 562 rounds of ammunition.

“The highest number of arrests was for contact crimes where 3 872 suspects were nabbed, with 219 of them arrested for murder, 222 for attempted murder and 160 for robberies including robbery with aggravating circumstances, house and business robbery, carjacking and cash in transit robbery,” the South African Police Service (SAPS) said of the arrests made in March.

In its statement on Thursday, the SAPS said the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) detectives arrested 248 suspects for rape while 49 suspects were also arrested for sexual assault.

Additionally, 1 817 suspects were arrested for cases of assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, whilst 891 more suspects were nabbed for common assault. On property related crimes, 268 suspects were arrested for burglary at residential premises and 55 suspects were arrested for stock theft with 33 cattle and 80 goats recovered in the process. 

Seventeen suspects were also arrested for theft of motor vehicles.

On drug related crimes, 1 599 suspects were arrested. 

“Police visibility on the roads was maintained and 512 suspects were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and 41 people were arrested for reckless and negligent driving.

“Stop and search operations resulted in the recovery of 791dangerous weapons, of which 716 were knives. These operations will be amplified during the month of April and high police visibility will be maintained, especially during the Easter weekend,” said the police. -SAnews.gov.za

Kuruman high-density operation leads to R38 000 fines issued

A high-density operation in the greater Kuruman, Northern Cape, has resulted in fines amounting to R38 500 issued for various road traffic violations.

The South African Police Service (SAPS), under the leadership of Northern Cape Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing, Major General Johny Besnaar, together with the Provincial Head for Proactive Policing, Brigadier Irene Kopeled, and Acting John Taolo Gaetsewe (JTG) District Commissioner, Brigadier Kenneth Baloyi, led a successful high-density operation in the greater Kuruman area and Bothithong policing precint. 

The high-density operation, which was carried out on 28 and 29 March 2025, was supported by the Community Police Forum (CPF) and Community in Blue Patrollers.

"The multi-disciplinary operations were executed by members from the affected stations, [including] SAPS K9 unit, flying squad, members from the Provincial Proactive policing, Provincial Corporate Communication and the Vehicle Safeguarding Section (VSS)," the SAPS said in a statement on Sunday. 

The police actions targeted various offences, including aggravated and business robberies, burglary at residential premises, preventing stolen property in transit, combating of drugs and human trafficking, as well as stock theft 

The disruptive actions commenced with stop and searches, foot patrols, blue light patrols, compliance inspections and drugs searches.

Police also conducted roadblocks on the N14 road during which 392 vehicles were stopped and searched, where fines amounting to R38 500, were issued for various road traffic violations.

During compliance inspections, tuckshops and taverns operating in Kuruman and Bothithong, were visited.

One tavern was closed down and a fine was issued for non-compliance.

A total of seven people were also arrested for contraventions, including drunk and driving, possession of drugs, riotous behaviour, shoplifting, and contravention of the Immigration laws.

Police further discovered an unregistered day care centre operating without the required documentation in a Kuruman residential area, and the local Department of Social Development personnel were contacted for further handling.

The Acting District Commissioner and Brigadier Baloyi commended all role-players and law enforcement agencies, who were involved the crime blitz, for the collaboration in combating and preventing crime during the operations.

“These actions reaffirmed that police will continue to stamp down the authority of the state in the district, especially as we are approaching the Easter holidays and beyond,” the SAPS said.

Government adopts improved approach to curb road crashes

Over the last two months, government has adopted an improved approach to managing road safety and it has resulted in a decrease in road crashes.

“The consequence of these actions is that we saw a 10% month-on-month decline in accidents in January 2025 compared with January 2024, and a 25% decline in accidents when one compares February 2025 with February 2024,” Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy, said on Thursday.

As part of this strategy, the Department of Transport has deployed the National Traffic Police on key routes at month end, deepened cooperation and focused on high-risk areas amongst national, provincial and municipal traffic officers. It also focuses on arresting pedestrians who walk on highways.

During this period 21 282 fines were issued to drivers for speeding, and over 3 000 drivers were arrested for drunk driving during January and February. About 12 000 illegal vehicles were impounded.

The Minister was speaking during the launch of the 2025 Easter Season Road Safety Arrive Alive campaign, that is taking place from 20 March to 2 May 2025, under the theme: “It begins with Me”. 

“We chose this theme because driver and pedestrian behaviour is responsible for 87% of road accidents and fatalities in our country. And so, reducing road fatalities and accidents is the responsibility of each one of us.

“The National Traffic Police, [including] South African Police Services provincial traffic departments, Cross Border Road Traffic Agency, Border Management Agency, the metros and local authorities, will work together to patrol routes leading to Limpopo, KwaZulu Natal, Mpumalanga, Free State, Eastern Cape and Western Cape. High visibility will also be maintained in Gauteng.

“We have identified the most critical routes across the country requiring additional resources and more focused monitoring over this period,” she said.

These include among others, the following:

  • The N4 Nelspruit;
  • Mankweng (R71);
  • Libode on the N2, Mthatha’s R61;
  • Parys (FS), R54;
  • Harrismith and the N3;
  • KwaDukuza, N2 in KZN and
  • N4 Middleburg in Mpumalanga.

Over the next six weeks the department will focus on working with the bus industry to check vehicle roadworthiness and educate drivers on fatigue management ahead of the Easer weekend.

Meetings will also be held with faith-based sector to support safe and appropriate travel arrangements to the big events over the Easter weekend. Taxi ranks will be visited to inspect vehicles and safer driving practices will be promoted. -SAnews.gov.za

RTMC to convene bus stakeholder engagement

Transport Minister Barbara Creecy has instructed the Road Traffic Management Corporation to urgently convene with stakeholders in the bus industry in light of recent accidents involving buses in South Africa.

The Minister conducted a media briefing at Pelonomi Hospital in the Free State, where she visited bus crash survivors. 

During the last seven days, at least 19 people have died in bus related accidents in two separate incidents in the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal.

Last year, several bus accidents caused alarm, with one of the worst taking 45 lives in Limpopo during the Easter pilgrimage to Moria. 

“We’ve been through quite a considerable period of time where we haven’t had bus accidents. But now, in the light of these two accidents that have occurred, it’s very important that we call all stakeholders together and we emphasise the issues of appropriate driver conduct in all kinds of weather conditions, making sure that vehicles are in a roadworthy condition, and adherence to things like speed.

“We don’t know the cause of these two accidents and I’m not pointing fingers at any particular individuals. But in my view, prevention is better than cure and it is very important that we urgently bring all of our bus companies and once again reiterate the message of safe driver behaviour so that we save lives,” she said.

Turning to the accident in KwaZulu-Natal, where a bus rolled down an embankment, killing at least 10 people on board, the Minister passed her condolences to those who have lost loved ones in the incident.

The RTMC has confirmed that the accident is under investigation.

“A team from the Road Traffic Management Corporation has started with the South African Police Service to establish the cause of the crash that claimed the lives… of people on the N2 between Richard’s Bay and Shaka’s Kraal.

“The crash involved a passenger bus from Pontys Transport – Tongaat. Preliminary reports suggest that the crash happened due to a tyre failure, causing the driver to lose control. The bus subsequently went through a crash barrier, plunged down an embankment and overturned.

“The incident resulted in [fatalities] and… four individuals sustained serious injuries, 35 suffered minor injuries, and 12 remained uninjured... The precise cause of the crash is still subject to an ongoing investigation,” the RTMC said in a statement on Sunday. – SAnews.gov.za

Condolences following N2 bus crash

KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC, Siboniso Duma, has expressed condolences to the families of the nine church members who lost their lives in a bus accident on the N2, between Mandeni and Stanger, in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

The accident occurred on Sunday afternoon when a bus, transporting members of the Twelve Apostles Church in Trinity from Richards Bay to Shakaskraal, near KwaDukuza, experienced a tyre burst.

The incident caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

Duma commended the coordinated efforts of the rescue teams involved in the operation, including the Road Traffic Information (RTI) team, traffic departments, fire and disaster teams from Mandeni and KwaDukuza, and the South African Police Service (SAPS).

“The team conducted a very complicated search and rescue operation due to the steep embankment and thick bush. The operation was completed at 11:30pm [Sunday], and no victim was found left in the wreckage,” Duma said in a statement on Monday.

Duma noted that the incident occurred just as the province was finalising its Road Safety Plans ahead of the Easter holidays.

On Monday, Duma visited the site of the crash, which was located approximately 100 meters down the embankment along the N2.

The wreckage was retrieved and transported to the RTI offices in Gingindlovu to facilitate investigations by the SAPS, Road Traffic Management Corporation, and RTI.

“This is a difficult period for the Twelve Apostles Church in Trinity in KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa as a whole. We pray to God to shine his face on the families, relatives, church members and those who were injured.

“The department will be in touch with all families and the leadership of the church, starting from [Monday]. We want to ensure that the victims are given a dignified funeral,” Duma said. – SAnews.gov.za

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) on Sunday said isolated showers and thundershowers can be expected over the east and central parts of the country.

“Along the south-west parts of the country a cold front is expected to make landfall resulting in showers and rain along the south coast,” meteorologist at the SAWS, Samkelisiwe Thwala said.

Yellow level 2 and Yellow level 1 warnings have also been issued.

“A Yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms causing heavy downpours, large amounts of small hail, strong damaging winds and excessive lightning that will result in localised flooding of susceptible settlements, roads and low-lying areas, localised damage to properties as well as localised disruptions to municipal services are expected over the North West, Gauteng, extreme south western Mpumalanga and eastern and central parts of Free state as well as the western parts of Kwa-Zulu Natal and extreme eastern parts of the Easter Cape.

“A Yellow level 1 warning for damaging winds leading to difficulty in navigation at sea, and small vessels at risk of capsizing in locality is expected between Cape Agulhas and Plettenberg Bay as well as between Coffee Bay and Port Edwards,” she said.

In addition, a Yellow level 1 warning for strong damaging winds that could lead to localised damage to settlements both formal and informal, are expected in places over Chris Hani District Municipality, Walter Sisulu Local Municipality and Senqu Local Municipality as well as the central and the southern parts of Northern Cape and over the western parts of the Free State.

Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the national Reconciliation Day message to the nation in Vredendal in the Western Cape tomorrow.

“Sunny conditions can be expected with cool temperatures with no anticipation of adverse weather,” Thwala said of Monday’s commemoration.

Asked on whether Gauteng can expect  heatwave conditions in the new week, Thwala said there “is no heatwave expected for the upcoming week as temperatures are expected to range between warm and hot.”

She urged holiday makers visiting various places across the country to stay safe and adhere to the severe weather alerts issued. -SAnews.gov.za
