The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) requested the Minister of Basic Education, Ms Siviwe Gwarube, in writing to extend the deadline for public participation on proposed changes to the History curriculum by fourteen days.

The documents on which comment is invited are voluminous and require thorough examination. The invitation for public comment was published in the Government Gazette on 20 March this year with a specified deadline of 19 April. This period spans two long weekends and also coincides with the annual Easter school holidays.

In education circles, these holidays are often used for sporting events, which take up additional time.

Moreover, the Department is not making it easy to find and access the relevant documents. While the public communications usually contain a summary of one or two pages, there is no link that the interested reader can follow to the relevant Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS).

Anyone who does manage to find the documents on the Department’s website encounters comprehensive explanations of the philosophical and methodological underpinnings for presenting the subject. These explanations do not lend themselves to a simple “yes” or “no” response.

It appears, however, that the Department expects participants to respond within fairly narrow parameters. A form is provided with a block next to each grade and theme where commentators can highlight issues. Apparently, the Department does not anticipate any submissions on the philosophical and methodological aspects.

The Freedom Front Plus will submit a thorough response, but also wishes to guide other interested parties in making meaningful submissions. Two additional weeks should help to enhance the entire process.
