Green Building Trends in Africa: Africa’s Urbanization Provides the Opportunity to Embrace Green Building

Globally, buildings are responsible for a substantial share of energy, electricity, water and materials consumption using between 35-40% of energy demand and contributing 37 per cent of world carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Including the manufacturing of building materials.

The 2022 updated Global Buildings Climate Tracker (GBCT) (https://apo-opa.co/3YLJiZG) shows that there is a significant gap between the current state and the desired decarbonization path which is concerning. In effect it means that to align with the 2030 milestone, an annual increase of ten decarbonization points is now necessary which is a substantial jump from the six points per year anticipated starting in 2015.

In 2019 in Africa, buildings accounted (https://apo-opa.co/4e8NIhN) for 57% of total final energy consumption and 32% of total process-related CO2 emissions.

Despite continental issues of poverty, unemployment and rapidly developing informal settlements among other issues, many countries in Africa are embracing green, sustainable building practices.

With its burgeoning population, expected to add some  1.2 billion people by  2050 (https://apo-opa.co/3AxgxXo) Africa faces rapid urbanization.

Urbanization provides an opportunity for countries across Africa to embrace green building practices, access available international green funding opportunities, and set a foundation for sustainability for future generations.

In 2023 the Africa Regional Network of World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) launched the Africa Manifesto for Sustainable Cities and the Built Environment, which sets out the actions that  policymakers and businesses across the continent need to take to achieve a net zero carbon, healthy, resilient, equitable, socially- and economically-inclusive built environment for everyone, everywhere.

Achieving these goals requires policymakers and business leaders across the continent to recognise the untapped potential of the built environment. But this can only be realized with the implementation of policies that support transformative action, through intense collaboration between governments, city and regional leaders, businesses and investors. 

South Africa is leading Africa's green building sector (https://apo-opa.co/3YLdq7N). It has over two million square meters certified green buildings that reduce water consumption, electricity, and waste disposal; 50 certified projects are projected to result in an annual saving of 76 million kilowatt hours which is equivalent to the electricity needs of 5,300 households every year.

South Africa has its own National Standard 10400 Part XA that deals with optimizing energy efficiency in buildings and in the light of this the Green Star South Africa and EDGE green building tools have been adapted and are widely used in the country. International rating systems like LEED and WELL are also used.

The scope of green construction in Egypt has been slow to grow but Egypt has two local rating systems in place called TARSHEED and the Green Pyramid Rating System. These, along with EDGE, LEED and WELL are used in various projects.

The Nigerian government has pledged to achieve a 20% reduction in its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and 45% with international support. Green building will likely be a big part of this change.

This country's National Building Code, developed by the National Council on Housing and Urban Development, and the Building Energy Efficiency Guideline (BEEG), also support the agenda of sustainable development by setting requirements for occupant health and safety, use of local and safe building materials and energy efficiency among other criteria.

Morocco has several legal provisions in place to promote sustainability and environmental protection through construction impact assessments for new building projects as well as energy-efficient construction requirements applicable to most residential and commercial projects. Several projects in the country have also achieved LEED green building credentials.

It also has several renewable energy projects such as the Noor Midelt Solar Plant and Tarfaya Wind Farm, one of the biggest wind farms in the continent.

As the drive towards Net-Zero heightens more African countries are joining the African Regional Network of the World Green Building Council. NGOs and other industry professionals are setting up green building councils in South Africa, Egypt, Tunisia, Nigeria, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Mauritius, Tanzania, Kenya, Cameroon and Uganda.

One of the big hurdles restraining a sustainable development movement in the construction industry is a lack of awareness for practical sustainable actions among many developers and investors.

In South Africa there is a broad awareness of Green Buildings and the market share of certified buildings among all new builds is increasing. The 2021 International Finance Corporation's (IFC) Green Building Market Stakeholder Assessment for South Africa showed that on the supply side, key motivating factors for Green Buildings are their reduced carbon footprint increased end user demand and increased marketability.

From the occupier's perspective the motivating factors for buying or leasing a Green Building are lower utility bills and lower operating costs. Yet, at a residential level occupiers are only willing to pay a two percent premium for these benefits.

The IFC report points out that the perceived cost of construction and certification of green buildings are also considered major obstacles to the expansion of certified Green Buildings in South Africa (https://WorldGBC.org/). Its research indicates that those in the know estimated the additional construction cost to be 10% or higher, while those unfamiliar with Green Buildings are likely to significantly overestimate costs.

Currently, four out of six financial institutions provide financing for Green Building projects in some form or another and three require a certification to approve the loan. The portfolios of two consist of retrofitting existing buildings into Green Buildings; two of commercial and industrial Green Building construction finance and only one residential Green Building construction finance. Of the two FI's that currently do not fund any Green Building one plans to do so in the future while the other does not see this as part of their strategy.

The investment into green construction (https://apo-opa.co/4e8NYgL) has multiple benefits; it facilitates growth while addressing issues like employment, climate change, and poverty.

However, more needs to be done to improve the understanding of the benefits of green buildings such as lower operational costs, increased ROI as well as an overall improvement in occupant health and wellbeing. Financial institutions need to do more to support green construction. Those which have pledged to lower their investments in carbon producing industries could create green bonds or funds for the African construction sector. Government's need to provide policy support along with incentives to catalyze market development.

 All this suggests that there is still a sizable information gap regarding the cost, certification and benefits of Green Building and that further knowledge dissemination efforts are needed to close it.

Afreximbank Calls for Increased Collaboration to Accelerate the Green Energy Transition in Africa

The eighth Babacar Ndiaye Lecture held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Washington D.C., on 26 October 2024, under-scored the need for African nations to strike a balance between short-term development imperatives and long-term climate goals. 

Under the theme “Saving Lives Today versus Saving the Planet for the Future: Can the AfCFTA Resolve the Climate Change Dilemma” discussions centred on how the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Africa's most ambitious trade initiative, could serve as a vehicle for economic growth and environmental sustainability, positioning the continent as a leader in the global green transition.  

The Lecture drew a distinguished audience of policymakers, academics, financial experts and climate advocates.  

Speaking about Dr. Babacar Ndiaye in his opening remarks, H.E. Professor Benedict Oramah, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Afreximbank Group, said “Dr Babacar Ndiaye was most concerned by the long-term threats posed to humanity by climate change. He once said, "Climate change is the greatest threat to development, particularly in Africa, where millions of people depend on the environment for their livelihoods … Africa's economic transformation cannot happen without addressing climate change.”  

Dr. Ndiaye's reflection on the impact of climate change was spot-on and intellectually deep.” But, “disappointingly, the global debate on climate has been so much focused on emissions reduction with the question of reducing its impact on Africa and other developing countries always reduced to a footnote. A call for Africa to decarbonise, when the continent has not even carbonised, poses a serious threat to the socio-economic development of a gas-rich continent that has at least six hundred million people without electricity.” 

The African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement “is seen as a potent means of reducing carbon emissions as it is helping to domesticate industrial activities and minimise the carbon emissions caused by shipping of commodities to far-away lands for value addition and reshipping to Africa and elsewhere. We believe that The AfCFTA could offer a pathway to a just transition, enabling local industrial value addition while protecting the planet.”  

Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, GCON, the Immediate Past Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, delivered a powerful address titled “Sustainable Infrastructure for Africa's Future: Harnessing Innovation and Partnerships.” He spoke passionately about the advantages of the AfCFTA and its potential to transform Africa's trade landscape, reduce carbon emissions and foster innovation in green industries. 

“There are two obvious advantages to a fully operational AfCFTA.The first is that 42% of African countries, aside from North Africa, now have legislation prohibiting the export of raw ores or minerals before being processed. This legislation gives African countries the benefit of jobs and revenues from local processing and manufacturing.  

“The second advantage of the AfCFTA is that shipping is a major source of carbon emissions. Under current trade practices, a large share of African raw materials are exported to other regions, where they are processed or manufactured into finished products, usually using fossil fuel power sources, before being shipped back to Africa for consumption. This cycle contributes to higher emissions and constitutes a loss for African countries that do not reap the value chain gain from beneficiation. Intra-African trade in finished goods will substantially reduce this massive cause of global emissions,” he said. 

The reduction of emissions by intra-African trade has been the subject of several empirical studies. Professor Osinbajo referred to a recent ECA/ CEPII study titled “Greening the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement's Implementation" published in December 2023, which found, inter alia, that implementing the AfCFTA can boost intra-African trade by 35% in 2045 while increasing GHG emissions by less than 1%, compared to no AfCFTA or climate policies.  

These studies do not factor in using renewable energy sources in the processing and manufacturing of traded goods, an assumption of the Climate Positive Growth paradigm, which would again substantially reduce emissions.  

Professor Osinbajo cited mining bauxite in Guinea as an example. If Guinea, which has 25% of global deposits of bauxite, processed the bauxite it mines to aluminium with renewable energy in readiness for export, Guinea could save the world 335 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) per year, which is approximately 1% of global emissions, and create 280,000 jobs and generate $37 billion of additional revenue. If it chooses to sell the aluminium within Africa, it will again save the huge shipping cost to countries thousands of miles away.  

A Bloomberg study done for the African Development Bank (AfDB) in 2021 on the manufacture of battery precursors found that manufacturing battery precursors in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which has plenty of lithium and cobalt, is three times cheaper than manufacturing it in the US, EU and China. Manufacturing in the DRC would extend value chain opportunities to other African countries, they would need manganese from Zambia, Tanzania, Gabon and South Africa to contribute to its capacity to produce these battery precursors. Manufacturing using renewable energy could significantly reduce the cost of manufacturing. Africa's abundant renewable energy has very low seasonality or intermittency, making it possible to reliably provide a renewable baseload to power continuous industrial production.  

“The AfCFTA empowers African countries first to add value to materials and specialise in areas of national comparative advantage, and also to work together to trade more beneficially with the rest of the world,” said Prof Osinbajo. 

He futher said that “Most African countries depend on fossil fuels for their energy needs and for fossil fuel rich African countries, this is also a major source of export earnings and fiscal revenues. Ostensibly in keeping with their net zero obligations, there has been a growing trend amongst development finance institutions to withdraw from fossil fuel investment. These actions include the World Bank's decision to cease funding for upstream oil and gas development in Africa and the restrictions on financing downstream gas development by the European Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Clearly, the implications of these actions are dire, where there are no immediate alternative sources of power and the cost of the transition to cleaner fuels may be prohibitive. Some studies show that divesting from fossil fuels could reduce GDP by as much as USD$30 billion for Nigeria, USD$22 billion for Algeria, and USD$19.3 billion for Angola.” 

H.E. Dr Rania A Al-Mashat, Minister for Planning, Economic Development and International Co-operation, Arab Republic of Egypt said that while the “African continent is the least responsible for carbon emissions, it has the biggest burden in terms of financing climate change for developmental needs - such as food and water security, and access to energy. 

She called for greater collaboration with national and international stakeholders “We need to work together; we need to bring the experiences from other places so that Africa can push forward with respect to development and sustainable economic growth.” 

In her Goodwill Message, Ms. Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and Chair of the United Nations Sustainable Development Group, spoke about the rapidly closing window to prevent the worst impacts of climate change. She addressed the fact that many African countries are mired in debt, exacerbated by extended crises with little access to long-term concessional financing to invest in sustainable development. 

“With adequate access to financial resources at a reasonable cost, renewables can dramatically boost economies, grow new industries, create jobs and drive development, including by reaching the over 600 million Africans living without access to power,” said Ms Mohammed. 

She also stressed the importance of prioritising inclusive policies that empower women and youth when building climate-resilient economies.  

“By harnessing the collective might of the AfCFTA, Africa can make strides in addressing both climate action and sustainable development by promoting regional integration and fostering green industrialisation.  

“The AfCFTA can help build climate-resilient economies while creating jobs, reducing poverty and strengthening food security.”  

The eighth Babacar Ndiaye Lecture also reinforced Afreximbank's commitment to leadership in financing sustainable infrastructure and trade policies across the continent.

On the first day of the conference, the Plenary Session of the Merck Foundation Africa Asia Luminary 2024 took place, featuring a high-level panel discussion with the participating First Ladies of Africa and Asia. Moreover, two high-level ministerial panel discussion were held with African Ministers and top healthcare experts from across the globe.

The Day 2 of the conference will have five key parallel medical and scientific sessions, covering topics such as oncology, diabetes and hypertension, fertility and reproductive care, and medical capacity building in other specialties like respiratory care, acute care, emergency pediatric and neonatal care, and more. Additionally, a community awareness session, Merck Foundation Health Media Training, will be conducted for African journalists. This session will emphasize the critical role of the media in influencing communities and driving cultural change, with regards to a wide range of social and health issues like Breaking Infertility Stigma, Supporting Girls' Education, Stopping GBV, Ending Child Marriage & FGM, Empowering Women, Diabetes and Hypertension Awareness.

Feet 'N' Tricks International (www.FeetNTricks.com), in collaboration with the World Freestyle Football Association (WFFA) and proudly sponsored by AFREXIMBANK, has successfully concluded the second edition of Freestyle Connect Africa at the CANEX WEEKEND 2024 in Algiers, Algeria. The event, held on October 18th, 2024, at the SAFEX Exhibition Centre, brought together the finest freestyle football talent from across the continent.

In a thrilling display of skill, 24-year-old Mohannad-Hosam Mohamed Saleh Ali from Egypt was crowned the Africa Freestyle Champion in the male category. His flawless execution of intricate tricks and superior control earned him the top prize. Mohannad-Hosam dethroned Ali Yahia Ouahmed from Algeria, the defending champion and winner of the first edition held in Egypt in 2023, who finished as runner-up. Tunisia's Ayoub Haouas took third place, completing the podium in the fiercely contested male competition.

In the female category, Angelique Martins Ferreira from South Africa clinched the Africa Freestyle Championship, outperforming her fellow competitors. Nigeria's Okafor Ijeoma Evelyn, the reigning Nigerian Champion, secured second place, while Heizel Selesi Gyabi from Kenya took third, rounding out the top female freestylers of the continent.

The event was graced by top dignitaries and influential figures, further cementing its reputation as a premier sports and cultural showcase for Africa. In attendance were:

Just before the event kicked off, there was a panel discussion titled "Beyond the Scoreboard: Can Global Partnerships Provide Opportunities in the Sports Ecosystem?" This session gathered key industry stakeholders, who discussed how strategic partnerships can drive growth and investment in African sports. Mr. Ozigbo was among the panelists.

 A Celebration of African Talent and Culture

Freestyle Connect Africa 2.0 was more than a competition—it was a celebration of African creativity and culture, uniting 23 freestyle footballers from across the continent. Athletes from Nigeria, Egypt, South Africa, Algeria, Kenya, Tunisia, and Madagascar showcased their exceptional skills in this exciting event, which embodied the CANEX 2024 theme: "One People, United in Culture, Creating for the World." The dancers from Calabar Carnival were also on ground to entertain the audience with their graceful performance.

 Three esteemed judges oversaw the competition:

- Yorok Youssef Ayman (Egypt), a multiple-time national champion and two-time African Championship runner-up.

- Iya Traore (Guinea), ex-Paris Saint Germain junior team player and holder of three Guinness World Records in freestyle football.

- Ashley Mkhize (South Africa), former national champion and legendary freestyler.

 Valentine Ozigbo's Vision for Freestyle Football

Valentine Chineto Ozigbo, Chairman of Feet 'N' Tricks International and Director at the World Freestyle Football Association, reaffirmed his commitment to promoting freestyle football across the continent. He also emphasized his goal of pushing for the inclusion of freestyle football as an Olympic sport, bringing the blend of athleticism and creativity to a global audience.

"Freestyle football reflects the ingenuity and passion of Africa's youth. Our mission is to elevate this sport to the global stage, ensuring that our athletes get the recognition they deserve," said Ozigbo.

These were the sentiments expressed by the three Ministers when they spoke to declare the event open, advocating very passionately for the beautiful game of football to be part of the next Olympics.

Mr. Temwa Gondwe, in presenting the prizes to the winners, appreciated Feet n Tricks for a job well done, and signaled that freestyle football may be a part of Afreximbank's future events.

Kazan, Russia: The BRICS Engagement and BRICS Plus platforms are an opportunity for countries to forge greater and deeper ties for development. 

This is according to President Cyril Ramaphosa, who was delivering South Africa’s country statement during the BRICS/Plus Countries First Session in Kazan, Russia.

The leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates are meeting for the first time since new members were invited to join BRICS during the Johannesburg BRICS Summit of 23 August 2023.

Together, the powerful bloc holds around 35% of the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 20% of world exports.

“The BRICS Outreach and BRICS Plus engagements are important platforms for developing strong ties among countries from the greater Global South and emerging markets.

“We should use these platforms to foster meaningful engagement. We should use the BRICS platform to contribute to social, economic and cultural development of our peoples,” President Ramaphosa said.

The President welcomed initiatives by Russia aimed at developing other BRICS nations. 

“We welcome the Russian initiatives that are aimed at strengthening a number of BRICS countries through the various networks aimed at improving the future of BRICS countries’ transport networks and connectivity under the theme, ‘Innovation and Digitalisation of Transport’.

“This will help us find ways to integrate and deepen our interconnectedness in new and imaginative ways,” he said. 

The President noted that work has already begun in this regard through the International North-South Transport Corridor -- a multimodal transportation corridor established from St Petersburg in Russia to Mumbai, India.

“This corridor is an opportunity for this region to unlock new trade flows and trade routes in an increasingly multipolar world.

“On the African continent, the African Continental Free Trade Area will unlock opportunities for trade and investment for local and global businesses. It will create a number of opportunities that will lead to an integrated and connected continent,” President Ramaphosa said. 

He encouraged BRICS countries and friends of BRICS to “use these projects to further connect the greater Global South”.

International conflicts 

The President called for the resolution of conflicts that are escalating not only in the Middle East but also on the African continent. 

“We must find lasting solutions to all these conflicts.

“We must remain committed to the peaceful resolution of all disputes through negotiation and inclusive dialogue. We must safeguard the ability of States to pursue independent foreign policy. 

“We must safeguard the multilateral system because it is the cornerstone of international relations, and foster an environment of peace and development,” he said. 

He emphasised that conflicts cannot be allowed to “continue in perpetuity”. 

“We need to find paths to peace. In our quest for a more interconnected, just and prosperous world, we have the ability to foster an environment of peace through a focus on sustainable development.

“We must continue to support nations and peoples, who seek to end the cycle of conflict and choose the path of peace,” President Ramaphosa said. - SAnews.gov.za

Kazan, Russia: President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on the BRICS bloc of countries to ensure that the potential of the bloc’s economic partnership is realised for the benefit of all the members.

He was delivering South Africa’s country statement during the 16th BRICS Summit currently underway in Kazan, Russia.

The leaders of Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Iran, Russia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates are meeting for the first time since new members were invited to join BRICS during the Johannesburg II BRICS Summit of 23 August 2023.

Together, the powerful bloc of countries holds around 35% of the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 20% of world exports.

“Our story is a story of solidarity, mutual respect and mutual benefit. BRICS is an inclusive formation that has the ability to change the trajectory of the Global South.

“To do this, we must realise the full potential of our economic partnership to ensure sustainable development for all. We must undertake bold steps towards a mutual, shared and equitable prosperity,” the President said on Wednesday.

The President explained that in order for the BRICS Strategy for Economic Partnership 2025 to be achieved, the bloc must “explore pathways to unlock opportunities and address challenges confronted by micro, small and medium-sized enterprises in BRICS countries”.

“We must intensify cooperation among BRICS members by launching common development programmes in the fields of exports, industrial cooperation and technology exchange. We have called for the recalibration of trade rules to enable industrialisation.

“We must enhance beneficiation of mineral endowments of BRICS countries closest to source. This is important for development and for the advancement of our decarbonisation goals,” he said.

Going further on the point of decarbonisation and its twin issue in climate change, President Ramaphosa warned that the two issues have the potential to “deepen global inequality”.

“We must acknowledge the devastating impact on lives and livelihoods of our current climate trajectory. As South Africa, we remain committed to a just transition to a low carbon economy.

“We are committed to the reduction of global emissions, guided by the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities. While countries with developing economies remain severely impacted by climate change, they have contributed the least to the current climate crisis.

“It is therefore vital that industrialised nations honour their climate commitments and ensure a just and equitable transition. It is essential that climate actions do not deepen global inequality or stifle the developmental aspirations of the Global South,” President Ramaphosa said.

He noted that the approach of the BRICS bloc is to respond to the “aspirations of the largest part of the international community, which we refer to as the global majority”.

Kazan, Russia: President Cyril Ramaphosa has hailed the BRICS bloc of countries as a beacon of hope for countries in the global South.

The President was delivering remarks at a plenary session of the BRICS Summit currently underway in Kazan, Russia. 

The now expanded BRICS bloc of countries includes Brazil, Russia, China, India, South Africa, as well as newly minted Member States Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

This makes it one of the most powerful blocs on the global stage, with 3% of the world’s population, 32% of the world’s land area, around 35% of global GDP and 20% of world exports.

“Fifteen years ago, South Africa attended its first BRICS Summit in Sanya, China. Today, we gather as a group of nine leading emerging countries. Our historic expansion is a beacon of hope for the global South.

“Individually, we are countries of diverse histories, values and strengths. Together, we demonstrate the benefits of cooperation instead of competition. As an increasingly influential group, we must ensure the success of this expanded group,” he said.

The President called on the influential bloc to use its voice to advance global change – particularly on the resolution of international conflicts that require “a UN Security Council that is representative and inclusive”.

“We see from many conflicts raging across the world that the UN Security Council has not fulfilled its mandate to maintain international peace and security. It does not represent the interests of the global community, and therefore does not have the means to give effect to the global desire for peace.

“Just as BRICS has a vital role in shaping a new multipolar world order, so too must it use its voice to advance change.

“We found consensus on the reform of the UN Security Council when we met in Johannesburg last year. Let us build on that foundation to develop an improved consensus that addresses the concerns and aspirations of all BRICS members,” President Ramaphosa said.

On the plight of the Palestinian people, President Ramaphosa emphasised that the South African government remains “gravely concerned at the further escalation of a conflict that has already caused so much death and destruction”.

“The International Court of Justice has made it clear that the international community has a duty to prevent genocide by Israel. The countries of the world have a responsibility not to fund or facilitate Israel’s genocidal actions.

“As the UN General Assembly has now resolved, the countries of the world have a responsibility to promote the realisation of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination. Lasting peace and security will not be achieved until Palestinians have realised their aspirations for statehood, justice and freedom.

“Peace and security across the world requires the collective will of the community of nations. It requires a UN Security Council that is representative and inclusive,” he said – SAnews.gov.za

Kazan, Russia: Russian President Vladimir Putin says there are “promising spheres of cooperation” for Russia and South Africa to expand their trade relations.

President Putin was delivering remarks during the bilateral meeting between the two countries held on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia. The meeting was also addressed by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The BRICS Summit, held from 22 - 24 October, is a platform for the bloc's leaders to reflect on the status of mutually beneficial BRICS cooperation, regional and global economic and political developments, as well as global governance reform.

“Trade and economic ties between Russia and the Republic of South Africa are generally positive. Following a brief dip, mutual trade volumes have started to increase, rising by 3% in January - August 2024.

“Of course, we need to work jointly on some aspects in order to expand and diversify mutual trade and investment. Promising spheres of cooperation include energy, industry, agriculture, science and innovation,” President Putin said.

He hailed the bilateral relations between South Africa and Russia as those based of “mutual respect”.

“The relevant agencies of our countries collaborated in the financial sector to expand the use of national currencies in mutual settlements and to create an independent payment system.

“Our bilateral relations are based on the principles of a comprehensive strategic partnership, equality and mutual respect. Our political dialogue is progressing, and our foreign policy departments and security councils are actively communicating. Interparliamentary cooperation has been established.

“Russia and the Republic of South Africa closely coordinate their efforts on the international stage to establish a fair multipolar world order,” he said.

On relations with the African continent, President Putin called for stronger relations between the European country and countries in Africa.

“Russia attaches special significance to strengthening relations with African countries. Collaborative work is underway to implement joint agreements approved at the Russia-Africa Summit in St Petersburg, notably a declaration and an action plan, until 2026.

“We look forward to hosting the head of your foreign policy agency in Sochi for the first ministerial conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum, scheduled for November 9 – 10,” he said.

Turning to the Summit, President Putin said as host country, Russia has “built our work taking into account the results achieved at the Johannesburg summit”.

South Africa played host to the Summit in 2023.

This year, the leaders of Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Iran, Russia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates are meeting for the first time since new members were invited to join BRICS during the Johannesburg II BRICS Summit of 23 August 2023.

“Our focus has been on the seamless integration of new participants into the multi-level architecture of BRICS. In close contact with our South African friends, we have worked on coordinating the modalities for establishing the partner state status,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za

Kazan, Russia: President Cyril Ramaphosa has on Tuesday afternoon held a bilateral meeting with his Russian counterpart, President Vladimir Putin.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the XVI BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia. 

“We continue to see Russia as a valued ally, as a valued friend who supported us right from the beginning, from the days of our struggle against Apartheid…up until now.

“So, we are really delighted to be here and to know that we are going to have very important discussions here in Kazan, within the BRICS family,” President Ramaphosa said.

He told the Russian delegation at the meeting that since the last BRICS Summit held in South Africa last year, the country has held elections and formed a Government of National Unity.

“We have formed a Government of National Unity following our elections in May of this year. We will have time…to talk more about that and inform you how that whole process of governing South Africa with a number of other partners is evolving as we have sought to unite the country, to stabilise the country politically,” he said.

The President added that the South African delegation was enthused to be at the BRICS Summit.

The delegation includes Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola, Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Parks Tau and Defence and Military Veterans Minister Angie Motshekga.

“We would like to congratulate you for…being the President of BRICS having taken over from us. As South Africa we are sure that we will be able to chair our summit so that BRICS and the enlarged BRICS body can continue growing.

“We also do look forward…to the Summit itself, to participate with all other countries under your leadership and deal with matters that are of great importance in geo-political terms and everything that is happening around the world and also, the matters that have to do with trade and climate change [and] with peace and security,” President Ramaphosa said. 

The expanded BRICS now covers 43% of the world's population, 32% of the world's land area, around 35% of global GDP and 20% of world exports and provides opportunities to develop mutually beneficial cooperation that contributes to the sustainable growth and development of South Africa.

The leaders of Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Iran, Russia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates will meet for the first time since new members were invited to join BRICS during the Johannesburg II BRICS Summit of 23 August 2023.

In the evening, President Ramaphosa will attend the welcome cultural ceremony for BRICS leaders hosted by the Chair of BRICS 2024, President Putin.

The leaders of Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Iran, Russia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates will meet for the first time since new members were invited to join BRICS during the Johannesburg II BRICS Summit of 23 August 2023.

During the XVI BRICS Summit, BRICS leaders will reflect on the status of mutually beneficial BRICS cooperation, regional and global economic and political developments as well as global governance reform.

The Presidency said they will consider reports requested during the Johannesburg II BRICS Summit, including a report by BRICS Foreign Ministers on the further development of the BRICS Partner Country model and prospective candidates and a report by BRICS Finance Ministers on the consideration of local currencies, payment instruments and platforms.

The summit is held from 22 to 24 October 2024 under the theme: "Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security."

President Ramaphosa will commence his programme this afternoon, 22 October 2024, with a bilateral meeting with President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation.

The meeting will present an opportunity for President Ramaphosa to communicate priorities of the seventh administration, highlight the strategic importance of the Russian Federation to South Africa, and to exchange views with the Host President on issues of mutual interest.

President Ramaphosa will also hold several bilateral meetings with Leaders attending the BRICS Summit to strengthen political and economic relations in line with South Africa's national interests and foreign policy priorities.

Majodina calls for unity towards sustainable water development

Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina has called for unity across the continent in sustainable water development and collaboration through public private partnerships and investment.

Majodina made the call at the 7th Cairo Water Week (CWW) and 9th Africa Water Week (AWW), which are currently underway in Cairo, Egypt.

The 9th edition of the Africa Water Week is taking place alongside the Cairo Water Week from 13 – 17 October 2024. It is hosted by the government of the Arab Republic of Egypt, through the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.

The Africa Water Week is being held under the theme: “Placing Water and Sanitation at the Heart of Achieving Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want”, while the Cairo Water Week is themed: “Water and Climate: Building Resilient Communities”.

Majodina started her participation by meeting the host’s Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouly.

This was followed by a high-level Transboundary Water Governance for Sustainable Development panel discussion.

Majodina’s message during the first two days of the conference has been consistent - collaborative work through public private partnerships and investment.

“We say water is life and sanitation is dignity. It requires political will to drive the Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG6). Collaboration and co-operation are key to our success.

“It is also important to note that government alone, will not be able to achieve this mammoth task. We will continue to forge public private partnerships because we believe that working together, we can deliver more,” Majodina said.

The Minister warned that a lack of unity will be the downfall of a continent that is rich in minerals and natural resources.

Majodina also held bilateral meetings with Egypt, the Orange-Senqu River Commission and the Netherlands, aimed at strengthening relations between countries and to propose other forms of ensuring sustainable water provision through shared water resources.

Addressing power imbalances and social inequalities

She delivered a keynote address at a technical session under the sub-theme 6: Gender Equality and Social Inclusion convened by the Department of Water and Sanitation.

The session focused on the implementation of the youth, gender and social inclusion strategy, which is aimed at addressing power imbalances and social inequalities based on various social identities.

In her address, Majodina reminded the leaders that the youth are future leaders who have not stopped demanding fundamental rights to live in a fairer world for all.

“Amidst the demands for universal access to water, sanitation and hygiene, we have seen how the youth have been actively involved in advocating for action that will ensure that the water resources are managed correctly for the future,” she said.

The Minister further emphasised that water related matters should not be an appendix in policies and frameworks, but rather part of the main discussion.

“You cannot replace water and therefore we must walk, talk, sleep, jump, laugh and cry water throughout. Water needs to be at the top of the agenda by leaders,” Majodina said.

Eritrean professional cyclist Henok Mulubrhan made history at the 2024 African Continental Cycling Championship in Eldoret, Kenya, by achieving a hat-trick victory. Henok previously claimed the championship titles in 2022 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, and in 2023 in Accra, Ghana.

In this year's championship, Henok secured the gold medal, finishing ahead of cyclists from South Africa and Uganda, who took second and third place, respectively. Henok finished the race in 3 hours, 46 minutes and 21 seconds

Henok's triumph reaffirms Eritrea's dominance and prestigious status as a “powerhouse” in African cycling.

In an interview with Kenyan journalists, Henok expressed his gratitude to his teammates for their support throughout the race. He dedicated his victory to all members of the national team and the Eritrean people.

In this championship Eritrea has collected 7 Gold Medals, 5 Silver and 4 Bronze.

Lamola calls on African leaders to help end wars on the continent

While the media glare is on the Russia-Ukraine war - the genocide in Palestine, the conflict in Sudan, the war in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, and conflicts in the Sahel are as good as footnotes. 

These are the comments from the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, who expressed concern that not enough attention is being given to conflicts in Africa.

“We must take up our responsibility as Africans to help end these wars. We should work with external and international friends who act bona fide to end the war. Admittedly, this is not easy. 

“The presence of unconventional participants on both sides, including mercenaries, foreign volunteers, special forces, and paramilitary squads, has made Africa a place for proxy wars,” he said of Friday. 

Lamola delivered a keynote address at the Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA) Conference in Sandton.

The Minister used his platform to reiterate South Africa’s commitment to the maintenance of international peace and security, promotion of human rights and sustainable development. 

He said he was concerned that it was now easier to fund wars than to support development, adding that economic, financial, and cyber warfare, as well as artificial intelligence, have been “weaponised” and used on a large scale.

Lamola told delegates that the world was in a “grievous interregnum, and transitioning to the new is that dangerous”. 

“We are experiencing a proverbial ‘crisis moment’ in world affairs, which could easily become a ‘moment of calamity’.

“In this dangerous geopolitical moment, the champions of the liberal international order generally refuse to accept any notions of decline and would resist any attempt to emerge an alternative, least of all one from the Global South.”

Meanwhile, he stressed that geopolitical rivalry over people’s suffering was serious. 

“This is most evident in Sudan, where the conflict has created a humanitarian catastrophe unlike any other.”

However, he believes that South Africa’s elections beckons hope for democracy and that the way the Government of National Unity (GNU) was formed is a model for democracy worldwide.

“There comes a time when it is not absolute power that defines us but our collective ability to resolve our challenges and build a foundation of new frontiers for future generations.” 

Middle East

The Minister is of the view that the world is witnessing the making of a post-Cold War, with all the hallmarks that it could become an “unimaginable hot war”, with the Middle East as its centre point. 

“Turbulence, anarchy and combustion are the order of the day.” 

He believes that the Middle East crisis is becoming a proverbial shift in the global balance of power in front of our very eyes. 

“What started as plausible evidence of ‘genocide against the people of Palestine’ is now transforming into a real regional war that will have long-lasting ramifications for global peace and the economy and Africa in particular.”  

Lamola pointed out that those who were once at the heart of multilateral order are now at the forefront of undermining them. 

These, he said, include strategic pillars such as the Bretton Woods Institutions, the United Nations, and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. 

“Imagine what the reaction of the world would be if an African State declared the United Nations Secretary-General a persona non grata like Israel did.” 

This is after Israel’s Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, announced on X that he had declared the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, persona non grata or banned from setting foot in Israel.

“[The] Russia-Ukraine war, the genocide against Palestinians, trade wars that result in greater challenges in the global economy, and wars raging in Africa, with our continent becoming the theatre for proxy battles, all point to this moment of deep global crisis.” 

He said BRICS was determined to play this counter-balancing role for the development of the Global South.

BRICS originally consisted of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. It has since expanded to include Ethiopia, Iran, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and others.

“After the 2023 expansion, especially to members from the MENA [Middle East and North Africa] region, BRICS is a real force to be reckoned with.

“We will ensure that it does not take its eyes off the peaceful settlement of disputes, the transformation of global multilateral institutions, development finance, and the agitation for a more equitable global order.” – SAnews.gov.za

Benin to Contribute $2 Million to the African Development Fund

Benin joins six other African countries that contribute to ADF; 74 million people in Africa have benefitted from improvements in agriculture for food security through the Fund.

Benin has pledged $2 million to the next replenishment of the African Development Fund, the concessional window of the African Development Bank Group.

The country's Minister of Economy and Finance, Romuald Wadagni, made the announcement in Cotonou, at the opening session of the Mid-Term Review of the 16th Replenishment of the Fund.

It came shortly after the head of the African Development Bank Group, Dr Akinwumi Adesina invited Benin's President Patrice Talon to be a champion of ADF 17 and encouraged him to “pledge financial support.”

Announcing his country's pledge, Minister Wadagni said the African Development Fund was a trusted partner for low-income countries and recommended that each “recipient country demonstrates rigour and transparency.”

He said one of Benin's objectives was “to ensure that we can use the ADF instrument in the form of guarantees and raise money in order to benefit from its leverage effect.”

The current three-year financing cycle, which received a record $8.9 billion ends in 2025. Benin becomes the seventh African country to contribute, joining Algeria, Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Morocco and South Africa.

“Our ambition is encouraging more African countries to become state participants in the ADF,” said Adesina, citing Kenya's pledge of $20 million to ADF, announced last May by President William Ruto during the Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank Group in Nairobi.

He said the African Development Fund is providing Benin with $108.2 million towards general budget support for economic governance and private sector development program focused on improving the overall business climate, supporting agro-industrial sector and strengthening the development of Special Economic Zones, like Glo Gjigbe, that ADF delegates visited as part of the Mid Term Review program.

Across the continent, Adesina said the African Development Fund is achieving impactful and impressive results.

“15 million people have been provided with access to electricity. 74 million people have benefitted from improvements in agriculture for food security. 45 million people have benefitted from improved transport. And over 8,700 kilometers of roads have been built or rehabilitated,” said Adesina.

“I am proud of what this institution has achieved in its 50 years of existence,” he added, pointing out that the Fund has been ranked “the second-best concessional financing institution in the world for the quality of its development assistance.”

The Cotonou meeting was attended by ministers, representatives of donor and beneficiary member countries, the Bank Group's Board of Directors, senior management and staff.

Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina is set to participate in the 9th Africa Water Week (AWW) and 7th Cairo Water Week (CWW) from Sunday.

The session will be held from Sunday, 13 October to Thursday, 17 October in Cairo, Egypt.

The 9th edition of the Africa Water Week will this year be held jointly with the Cairo Water Week, hosted by the government of the Arab Republic of Egypt, through the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.

The Africa Water Week is an African Ministers' Council on Water (AMCOW) flagship initiative to facilitate the dissemination, sharing, networking and brokering of knowledge and information on water management and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) services provision in Africa.

Since the establishment of the AWW, participants have included Ministers and representatives responsible for water affairs in Africa; development partners and civil society organisations from Africa and beyond.

Held under the theme “Placing Water and Sanitation at the Heart of Achieving Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want, “Africa Water Week will have three running sub-themes.

The sub-themes include financing, investments and resource mobilisation; water supply, sanitation, hygiene, and wastewater; and water infrastructure for economic production, climate resilience, and disaster risk reduction.

“With less than two years before the end of the Africa Water Vision 2025, the 9th Africa Water Week aims to evaluate progress made in implementing the vision, consolidate the gains and derive lessons for the future,” Majodina said.

Meanwhile, the Cairo Water Week to be held under the theme “Water and Climate: Building Resilient Communities” aims to explore the intricate relationship between water and climate, emphasising their collective impact on community resilience.

Discussions will extend beyond recognition, delving into the need for sustainable and adaptive practices that fortify communities against the challenges of climate change and water scarcity.

Climate change 

As part of the event, various related sub-themes and sub-topics will be explored in plenary and technical sessions organised by international and regional organisations.

Majodina said government is standing at a defining moment as climate change is a lead conversation with rising sea levels that increase chances of floods, its impact on droughts and changing weather patterns that force changes in agricultural productions.
She said the impacts are global, hence the importance of the Cairo Water Week Theme.

“As a country, we are constantly working towards Goal Six of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), which aims to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. I look forward to engaging with my counterparts from across the continent and learning from their work and taking some of the lessons home,” Majodina said.

During her visit, Majodina will attend high-level plenary sessions and will be meeting with her Egyptian counterpart, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister, Professor Hani Sewilam.

The Minister will also be delivering keynote addresses at sessions convened by Water and Sanitation on the African Transboundary Management Benchmarking and Youth, Gender and Social Inclusion workshop, among others.

The Youth, Gender and Social Inclusion Strategy is aimed at addressing power imbalances and social inequalities based on various social identities.

The BRICS+ Fashion Summit (www.FashionSummit.org) concluded in Moscow with a landmark announcement: leaders from fashion associations across more than 50 countries signed a memorandum to form the BRICS International Fashion Federation. The new federation seeks to establish new centers of influence, strengthen international connections, boost industry sustainability, and provide NewGen of fashion talents with opportunities for growth. Notably, the summit was attended by representatives from over 100 countries, solidifying its standing as the largest fashion event for both emerging and established markets.

Brian Ahumuza, CEO and Founder of Uganda Fashion Designers Association, said “The BRICS International Fashion Federation has the potential to significantly foster international collaboration by creating structured opportunities for designers, artisans, and manufacturers to work together on joint ventures, exhibitions, and collections. This can help open up new markets, enabling designers from Uganda, for example, to reach audiences in Russia, Brazil, or India”.

Sunil Sethi, Chairman of the Fashion Design Council of India, said, "The need for such a fashionable alliance of emerging countries is long overdue. The memorandum to establish the BRICS International Fashion Federation was signed by an array of influential figures, including CEOs of fashion weeks, heads of fashion and textile associations, and academic leaders from countries such as India, South Africa, Russia, Ethiopia, Egypt, Spain, the USA, Indonesia, Malaysia, Ghana, Tanzania, Jordan, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Kenya.

Natalya Sergunina, Deputy Mayor of Moscow, highlighted the initiative's significance: "The creation of this International Federation is a major outcome of the recent BRICS+ Fashion Summit in Moscow. It demonstrates once again the shared goals and substantial potential for growth that we have with our global colleagues."

The declaration stipulates several core objectives: supporting local talent, promoting sustainable fashion, fostering cultural exchange, and creating a unified platform for emerging markets through educational and informational projects. It also focuses on the development of new technologies, the preservation of cultural identities, and the support of traditional arts and crafts.

"We are committed to providing these visionaries with a global platform and local events to ensure their creative work is celebrated globally. Our aim is to promote sustainable and eco-friendly practices, striving to implement transparent methods that will significantly reduce the fashion industry's carbon footprint. NBA Africa and Opportunity International to Build Basketball Courts and Conduct Youth Clinics in Kenya and Rwanda

NBA Africa (https://Africa.NBA.com/) and Opportunity International, a global nonprofit organization that develops innovative programs that use financial services, training and support to address some of the greatest challenges facing those living in poverty around the world, today announced a collaboration to build outdoor basketball courts and conduct youth clinics in Nairobi, Kenya and Kigali, Rwanda next year.  The collaboration will support NBA Africa's commitment to build 1,000 courts in Africa over the next decade, including 100 in Kenya.

As part of the collaboration, NBA Africa and Opportunity International will also hold a development program for coaches and teachers in both cities aimed at providing them with skills and best practices in coaching, refereeing, game operations, event management, program administration, and more.

The announcement was made today by NBA Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer Mark Tatum, Opportunity International CEO Atul Tandon and five-time NBA champion Derek Fisher at a press conference in Nairobi.

“Our collaboration with Opportunity International reflects our commitment to investing in local basketball ecosystems across Africa and providing youth with the resources and opportunities to develop their leadership and basketball skills,” said Tatum.  “We look forward to working together to create safe spaces where Kenyan and Rwandan youth can play the game and participate in programs that help develop the next generation of coaches and mentors.”

“We are absolutely thrilled to work with NBA Africa to bring world-class basketball courts and coaches to Africa,” said Tandon.  “This initiative is key to our longstanding commitment to bring more education and more opportunities to the youth of Africa, and we are grateful to NBA Africa, NBA Deputy Commissioner Tatum, and our longtime friend and partner Sam Garvin for coming together to help build a rising Africa.”

The Jr. NBA, the league's global youth basketball participation program for boys and girls, teaches the fundamental skills as well as the core values of the game at the grassroots level in an effort to help grow and improve the youth basketball experience for players, coaches and parents.  Last year, Jr. NBA programming directly reached more than 170,000 youth across Africa.

National Basketball Association (NBA) Africa Announces Four Prize-Winning Companies at First Startup Accelerator Demo Day

NBA Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer Mark Tatum today announced the four prize-winning startup businesses from “NBA Africa Triple-Double Accelerator” (http://apo-opa.co/3ZLmNoC), which NBA Africa launched in April 2024 to support the continent's technology ecosystem and the next generation of African entrepreneurs.  The four winning businesses – Festival Coins (Nigeria), Salubata (Nigeria), HustleSasa (Kenya) and UBR VR (Egypt) – will be awarded financial support and mentorship, including an opportunity to participate in workshops and development programs facilitated by NBA Africa or its partners. 

The 10 finalists, shortlisted from more than 700 early-stage African startup businesses that applied to participate, pitched their products to a panel of international industry leaders at a Demo Day at the NBA headquarters in New York City yesterday. The judges included Accelerate Africa Co-Founder and CEO Iyinoluwa Aboyeji; NBA Assistant General Counsel, Technology, Software Licensing and Digital Platforms Franciscus Diaba; Managing Director, Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution Rwanda Crystal Rugege; Chegg Inc. Executive Chairman Dan Rosensweig; and Partner at Development Partners International Joanne Yoo.  NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also delivered opening remarks and met the 10 finalists.

Below are the four winning businesses:

  1. Festival Coins (Nigeria), an event technology company that offers a customizable, no-code event registration and ticketing platform called Tix Africa for events in Nigeria and Ghana, won the first-place prize and $50,000. 
  2. Salubata (Nigeria), a company that creates modular shoes repurposed from plastic waste to reduce the global carbon footprint through its environmentally friendly products, won the second-place prize and $40,000. 
  3. HustleSasa (Kenya), which provides live event services that support payment processing, attendee check-in, merchandise sales, customer data management, influencer tracking, and more, won the third-place prize and $30,000.
  4. UBR VR (Egypt), which delivers state-of-the-art, fully immersive, in-person virtual reality (VR) experiences across Egypt, won the fourth-place prize and $20,000.

The six other finalists each received a $10,000 prize. 

The Demo Day was supported by three official partners: Paystack Payment Ltd. (http://apo-opa.co/3XHn75j), Kuramo Capital Management (http://apo-opa.co/3ZGroJ2) and Nigerian University of Technology and Management (NUTM) (http://apo-opa.co/3XHn1dX).

Informa Tech, organisers of the 27th annual Africa Tech Festival (www.AfricaTechFestival.com)  2024, are pleased to announce that the South African Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT) will be an official partner of this year's event, taking place from 12 to 14 November in Cape Town. 

Incorporating AfricaCom, AfricaTech, AfricaIgnite, and The AI Summit Cape Town, Africa Tech Festival 2024 will welcome 15,000 visitors, over 400 speakers, and more than 300 exhibitors. Topics include enterprise tech innovation and disruption across key sectors such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, cloud and data centres, and green ICT.  

“Africa Tech Festival is the largest and most influential telecoms and technology event in Africa, with an audience that spans the entire ICT ecosystem, including trade and other ministries. One of the highlights of the partnership is the AfricaCom 2024 Ministerial Summit, a closed-door VIP event bringing together close to a dozen African and international ministers from across critical sectors such as ICT, innovation, trade, finance, education, and enterprise. The Ministerial Summit will provide government leaders with a platform that facilitates discussion, collaboration, and sharing of learnings on how progressive policy is nurturing tech ecosystems, building efficient workforces, unlocking technological innovation across public and enterprise sectors, and driving Africa's socioeconomic development.  

Another initiative that forms part of the partnership is an exclusive government pavilion at which a small group of top South African businesses, SMEs, and startups will be hosted, again reflecting top-tier support for businesses that are contributing to the country's technology-driven agenda.

The Coca-Cola System in Africa Unveils Water Stewardship Initiative

The Coca-Cola Company in Africa (www.Coca-ColaCompany.com) and its bottling partners Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA), Equatorial Coca-Cola Bottling Company (ECCBC) and Coca-Cola HBC announced a nearly USD 25 million investment to help address critical water-related challenges in local communities in 20 African countries, starting this year through 2030. The work will be led by Global Water Challenge (GWC) and implemented by a consortium of partners, including The Nature Conservancy (TNC), The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

The effort, called ‘The Coca-Cola System's Africa Water Stewardship Initiative', was introduced in Cape Town, South Africa, in presence of executives from the Coca-Cola system in Africa and NGO partners. During the event, Karyn Harrington, Vice President of Public Affairs, Communications and Sustainability at The Coca-Cola Company's Africa Operating Unit indicated “Water is a priority for The Coca-Cola Company and its local bottling partners because it is essential to life, the communities we serve and our beverages. As we face increasing water insecurity worldwide, with demand outstripping supply in many regions such as Africa, Coca-Cola is taking steps to help accelerate efforts to address water stress, protect local water resources, and build community climate resilience. Our 2030 Water Security Strategy focuses on helping enhance water security where we operate, source ingredients, and touch lives.”

The Global Water Challenge and ‘The Coca-Cola System's Africa Water Stewardship Initiative' partner coalition will seek to improve water security for millions across the African continent, helping advance community health and resilience through abundant, clean water. ‘The Coca-Cola System's Africa Water Stewardship Initiative' aims to help protect and enhance the health of important watersheds and to help improve access to water and sanitation services in local communities. We will have projects in Algeria, Botswana, Cabo Verde, Comoros, Egypt, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mayotte, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Somalia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Recognizing that partnerships are critical to support this work, the company and its bottlers are collaborating with governments, businesses, and civil society organizations to design and implement strategic interventions. In addition to supporting the company's water strategy, this effort also aims to contribute to advancing the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 6, which focuses on ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation. 

This water initiative will build upon The Coca-Cola Foundation (TCCF)'s Replenish Africa Initiative (RAIN), a groundbreaking collaboration with key partners and co-funders which helped improve access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene for 6 million people across African countries between 2009 and 2019. Through 120 projects, the initiative positively impacted homes, schools and healthcare clinics in more than 4,000 communities.

SA must keep pace with international nuclear players

Eskom Group Chief Executive (GCE) Dan Marokane says South Africa should “move with pace” to keep up with the global move towards new nuclear build.

Marokane was addressing stakeholders at the Nuclear Seminar held by the Ministry of Energy and Electricity on Thursday.

“We are for nuclear. We understand that the energy mix is an important component of us achieving our strategic objectives as a country. This is not a discussion about either or. We’ve always argued that it is about the use of [energy] technologies to be complimentary.

“We are looking forward to participating in the process that will be led by the Minister [of Energy and Electricity, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa] to show that we can get to a point of making decisions very quickly. We cannot afford to wait any longer. We have fallen behind and we have an opportunity to catch up and we need to move with pace,” he said.

Marokane emphasised that it is very important that government has a clear stance on the use of nuclear energy in the country’s ambitions to lower carbon emissions.

“What I would like to appreciate is the very clear government perspective on the strategy of nuclear and where it sits on the energy mix and its importance for us marching towards net zero targets.

“We exist within the global community and clearly there’ve been movements within the world…the world around has reawakened to the reality that [nuclear] is essentially an important component of baseload power generation going forward and us reducing emissions going forward.

“We have heard about the ambitions for nuclear on the continent, Egypt being quite advanced in this area. It would be sad of us to be overtaken having had so many years of operation…both from a perspective of skills and technical contribution to the continent and opportunities,” he said.

The GCE highlighted that the economic spinoffs from using nuclear energy are “quite huge”. 

“For us as a country that is emerging out of the history that it has, the social inequalities that it has, this is an element that is going to contribute meaningfully for us. Our presence in the Western Cape has contributed immensely to the economic activities in the value chain.

“We have experienced quite tremendous positive spin offs from a green stability point of view with the Koeberg [Nuclear Power Station] units that are contributing…into the system. We have just…[installed] new steam generators so that we can have a life extension for the next 20 years.

“We will continue to look at the opportunities for exploiting this for even longer,” Marokane said. – SAnews.gov.za
