Law enforcement commended for major abalone bust

Location: News

Law enforcement commended for major abalone bust

The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, has welcomed the confiscation of over 250 kilograms of abalone in the City of Cape Town.

The City of Cape Town’s Special Operations Unit, Law Enforcement, and the Internal Investigations Unit, successfully intercepted a major poaching operation on Thursday.

“I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the entire team who contributed in any way to the successful operation in Hout Bay.  Thanks to their swift and coordinated efforts, supported by the cutting-edge capabilities of the City’s Eye in the Sky, they managed to successfully stop the  abalone poaching operation.

“The integration of technology with on-the-ground responses allowed them to track and apprehend suspects in real-time, leading to the confiscation of abalone, a valuable resource that would have otherwise been stolen from our natural environment. This bust represents the kind of proactive, intelligent policing that is crucial in the fight against poaching and other forms of organised crime,” the Minister said on Friday.

George said the arrest of a 22-year-old suspect, who is now in custody at Hout Bay Police Station, highlights government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the city’s natural resources and ensuring the safety and well-being of communities.

“We are also grateful to the officers who, despite facing unwarranted hostility from some members of the community, remained focused on their mission. Such acts of bravery and professionalism exemplify the standard of service we expect from our law enforcement teams.

“This operation, though successful, serves as a reminder of the persistent threat posed by illegal poaching in our coastal region. I hope this success will deter others from engaging in the illegal exploitation of our resources and will encourage all Cape Town residents to stand together in support of law enforcement efforts aimed at protecting their city,” George said. -SAnews.gov.za

WEF meeting a ‘golden opportunity’ for South Africa

Location: News

WEF meeting a 'golden opportunity' for South Africa

This year’s World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting to be held in Davos, Switzerland, will be significant for South Africa, particularly as the country takes its spot at the forum bearing the Presidency of the Group of 20 (G20).

This is according to Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana, who addressed the pre-WEF breakfast session held in Sandton on Thursday.

The WEF annual meeting will be held from 20 January, with several Ministers, civil society and business leaders from South Africa expected to attend.

“This year’s WEF is particularly significant for South Africa. For the first time in many years, the President of the Republic, His Excellency Cyril Ramaphosa, will lead the South African delegation. This presents a golden opportunity to not only strengthen South Africa’s visibility on the world stage, but to also profile our G20 Presidency.

“Under the theme of Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability, our G20 Presidency reflects the essence of South Africa’s vision for global leadership,” Godongwana said.

The Minister told the breakfast session – which was attended by Ministers, high ranking government officials and business leaders – that Team South Africa will be presenting a united front at the WEF meeting.

“The WEF Annual Meeting brings together a wide array of key global stakeholders. These audiences are keen to understand the opportunities and challenges facing South Africa.

“It is essential that we align our key messages to showcase our country’s strengths, address misconceptions and advance our collective priorities. By presenting a unified message, we can enhance South Africa’s standing and influence in the global community,” he said.

The local environment

Godongwana acknowledged that the South African economy still faces challenges. However, he emphasised that there are reasons for optimism.

“The third quarter contraction, combined with the slight downward revision of the second quarter GDP, resulted in modest growth of 0.4% over the first three quarters of 2024. This was below the projections included in the 2024 MTBPS [Medium Term Budget Policy Statement] macroeconomic forecast.

“However, we remain cautiously optimistic. There are significant upside risks to growth in the final quarter, including faster-than-anticipated easing of inflationary pressures, improved electricity reliability, and the stimulus effect of the withdrawals of the two-pot retirement system. While the road ahead is challenging, these positive indicators provide a foundation for stronger growth in 2025 and beyond,” he said.

The 2025 WEF annual meeting will be the first for the seventh administration and the Government of National Unity (GNU).

Godongwana said since its formation last year, the GNU has “demonstrated its potential to unite the nation and foster progress”.

“This era of governance has allowed for meaningful discussions on accelerating structural reforms.

“The positive reception from both the markets and the public has created a conducive environment for the GNU to deliver on its commitments and build an investment friendly environment,” he said.

Returning to his earlier point, the Minister reiterated the importance of “collaboration between business and government, as we prepare to present South Africa’s story on the global stage”.

“As we prepare to represent South Africa in Davos, let us remember the strength that lies in collaboration.

“Together, government and business can drive the messages that matter most, which are those of resilience, opportunity, and shared prosperity,” Godongwana concluded. – SAnews.gov.za

Vodacom Ranked Africa’s Top Employer for Second Consecutive Year

Location: Business
Vodacom Group

Vodacom Group (www.Vodacom.com) has been named Africa's number one employer by the Top Employers Institute for the second year running. This prestigious certification and first place ranking have also been awarded to Vodacom Group, Vodacom South Africa, Vodacom Mozambique, Vodacom Tanzania and Safaricom Kenya.

The Top Employers Institute Companies bestows this accolade to companies based on their performance in key HR domains such as people strategy, work environment, talent acquisition, learning, and well-being.

“We are incredibly proud to be certified as the Top Employer in Africa for the second year in a row. We believe that the well-being of our employees contributes directly to our ability to fulfil our purpose of connecting for a better future. By continually enhancing our Employee Value Proposition through empathetic and inclusive policies and practices, we are cultivating a workplace culture where people feel valued, empowered, and inspired to reach their full potential,” says Shameel Joosub, CEO of Vodacom Group.

In 2024, Vodacom strengthened its Employee Value Proposition with employee offerings that endorse its commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive workplace. With an emphasis on Compassion, Acceptance, Respect and Empathy (C.A.R.E.), the company's enhanced wellness initiatives include support for all stages of life, such as menopause, and a more encompassing family responsibility leave policy.

“Maintaining our position as Africa's Top Employer once again demonstrates our dedication to enabling our employees to thrive. However, our focus on nurturing talent and career development in the tech industry extends to the millions of young people across the continent who are the future of work. There is an urgent need to prepare the next generation for the rapidly evolving digital economy. To this end, we have launched the Digital Skills Hub, with the goal to equip one million young people in Africa by 2027 by providing access to self-paced, digital skills training for those aged between 18 and 35,” says Matimba Mbungela, Chief Human Resources Officer at Vodacom Group.

Developed in collaboration with other tech organisations, including Amazon Web Services and Microsoft, the Vodacom Digital Skills Hub aims to boost digital literacy across Africa, bridging the digital skills gap across eight African countries including in South Africa, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Mozambique, Lesotho, Egypt, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Kenya.

The Vodacom Digital Skills Hub is designed to empower the next generation, to consider a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and entails fun and engaging practical digital skills training for young people on the continent. AWS Educate is one of the first programs to be offered through the Digital Skills Hub and an additional program to Vodacom's various existing online learning platforms. AWS Educate offers beginners an extensive library of self-paced online training that covers a range of topics from cloud fundamentals to artificial intelligence and machine learning.

“As we embark on a new year, we want to encourage young people, whether they're students, job seekers or aspiring entrepreneurs, to benefit from the Digital Skills Hub. By supporting digital skills training as a Top Employer, we are empowering the next workforce and ensuring that everyone can connect to a better future,” concludes Joosub.

Transforming eThekwini into a safer city

Location: News

Transforming eThekwini into a safer city

The city of eThekwini is famous for its year round warm weather; its pristine beaches; its rich Zulu heritage and its friendly people.

These attractions make the coastal city an ideal place for investors to do business in Durban.

However, in recent years, the economic powerhouse of KwaZulu-Natal has lost some of its appeal due to among other things, contamination at its beaches, a decline in tourism, water supply challenges, an increase in crime, dilapidated infrastructure and challenges with maintaining cleanliness.

To return the city to its former glory, President Cyril Ramaphosa established the eThekwini Working Group (PeWG) in April 2024.

The PeWG is a multi-stakeholder mechanism crafted to address critical service delivery, infrastructure and socio-economic challenges within the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality with the goal of positioning the city as an investment and tourism hub.

It operates across three spheres of government and includes representatives from the private sector and labour.

With crime being one of the challenges that act as a deterrent to holidaymakers and drive away investors in the city, the South African Police Service (SAPS) working together with the city, has increased crime combating operations and deployed more boots on the ground to ensure visibility.

In the lead up to the festive season, between 1 October and 15 November 2024, over 31 491 law enforcement officers from SAPS and 1538 metro police officers were deployed in eThekwini to enhance community safety through high-density operations. These operations are ongoing and continued throughout the festive season.

Speaking exclusively to SAnews about law enforcement operations in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, said the collaboration with the Metro Police and other law enforcement agencies was producing great results.

“As the SAPS, working together with the Metro Police and other law enforcement agencies, we have been able to push back on crime. We have been able to increase patrols, intelligence collection and crime combating operations.

“We have also been able to create an environment that enables business to operate. Our mission is to create a conducive environment for business to operate and function so that our citizens can get employment," Mkhwanazi said.

According to the progress report by the Working Group, business confidence in 2024 increased by 24.59%. In the first quarter, business confidence stood at 38.42% and increased to 63.01% in the third quarter.

“We must appreciate the intervention from national government through the Working Group. With the collaborative efforts of working with other government departments that are driving tourism and the security cluster, we have seen an increase in the recruitment of metro police officers that joined the service to ensure that we have more officers on the ground.

“As the SAPS, we have also received new Constables that were recruited and deployed in this area to ensure visibility on the ground. We are deploying strategically in key areas that are a hotspot for crime, and we have been able to reduce criminal activities in those areas,” he said.

As a result, residents can enjoy going for a jog at the beach front as early as 4am in the morning, as law enforcement operations are being implemented around the clock.

“We have maximum visibility by using blue light patrols which enables people to see our presence when the sun goes down. Anyone witnessing crime can easily reach out to law enforcement officials.

“We have increased the foot patrols to ensure that we can reach places that we would ordinarily not see when we are driving in the vehicles. We have procured motorbikes and deployed bicycles in the beachfront as well as in the city.

“We are confident with the operations that we are running in the city. We are seeing an increase in tourists visiting the city and business confidence. We are also partnering with the private sector’s security companies that are looking after business establishments in the city,” Mkhwanazi said.

Last November, the city announced that it was transferring its Closed-Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV) to the Metro Police Unit and Fire and Emergency Unit for management to enhance crime fighting and public safety while ensuring coordinated efforts to respond effectively to disasters.

The transfer included the Emergency Mobilising and Communication Centre (EMACC) and the technical services functions, which are being transferred to the Information Management Unit under the Office of the City Manager.

“In the past, these cameras were being controlled by Disaster Management, which was a challenge for law enforcement to utilise and operate them. With the transfer, the police have easy access to the cameras and as a result the response time to crime is shorter.

“Law enforcement can respond with speed because we have police officers monitoring the cameras and guide the members on the ground to respond to criminal activities. These are some of the results that we are seeing due to the work of the Working Group. Technology play a big role in in our crime fighting efforts,” the provincial Police Commissioner said.

Between 1 October and 15 November 2024, operations by SAPS officers and metro police officers saw 1 500 arrests, 150 undocumented persons were arrested, 322 suspects were arrested for the illegal possession of firearms and 58 949 drugs were recovered. - SAnews.gov.za

President Ramaphosa chairs first Presidential Economic Advisory Council meeting

President Cyril Ramaphosa has chaired the first meeting of the newly appointed Presidential Economic Advisory Council for the seventh administration.

The meeting was held at the Union Buildings in Tshwane on Tuesday.

“The Presidential Economic Advisory Council will play an important role in providing independent advice as we seek to ensure that our economic policy is informed by sound evidence, by innovation, and by a diversity of views and opinions," the President said.

A statement by the Presidency said the President welcomed members and emphasised the important role the Council plays “as the Government of National Unity looks to reignite economic growth and tackle poverty and inequality”.

“The meeting reaffirmed the necessity of structural transformation and economic reforms to accelerate economic growth and discussed forward-looking policy proposals in areas such as green industrial policy, skills development, and macroeconomic policy,” the statement read.

Furthermore, the statement revealed that discussions also forayed into “the need to position South Africa for growth in a rapidly changing global environment, in which technological advances in artificial intelligence and the imperative of tackling climate change will lead to structural changes in economies”.

Discussions were also held on South Africa’s Presidency of the Group of 20 (G20) and the country’s role in “advancing the global economic policy agenda as it assumes the Presidency of the G20”.

“President Ramaphosa has outlined a set of clear and actionable priorities for the G20 Presidency which include mobilising finance to support a just transition, addressing the unsustainable debt burden on developing countries, strengthening disaster resilience and response, and harnessing critical minerals for inclusive growth and sustainable development.

“The meeting discussed proposals to advance these priorities, building on the progress made on issues such as international taxation, reform of multilateral development banks, and climate finance,” the statement read. – SAnews.gov.za

Government congratulates Matric Class of 2024

Government congratulates Matric Class of 2024

Government has extended its congratulations to the Matric Class of 2024 for their outstanding performance in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations.

With a pass rate of 87.3% - the matriculants have exceeded the 82.9% achieved in 2023, marking an impressive improvement of 4.4%.

The class of 2024 has worked hard and with determination, reflecting a collective effort from learners, teachers, parents, guardians and caregivers.

“The 2024 results mark a significant milestone in the history of South Africa’s education system, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of democracy. In 1994, many learners faced various odds, with limited access to quality resources, school infrastructure, teaching and appropriate education curriculum.

“Today, the Class of 2024 benefits from an education system that is more inclusive, better resourced, has access to warm meals, no fee schools and a world renown curriculum.

“The journey has not been without its trials; among other things, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted schooling globally, causing significant learning losses and posing unprecedented challenges to learners, educators and families. Yet, the Class of 2024 has emerged stronger, proving that perseverance and collective effort can overcome adversity,” the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) said on Tuesday.

It said that government has worked hard to create an enabling learning environment which includes, amongst others, the eradication of mud schools, pit latrine toilets and provision of good quality classrooms.

The Department of Basic Education has set a deadline of 31 March 2025 to eradicate all remaining identified pit latrine toilets in schools across the country.

“Significant progress has been made in building new schools, refurbishing existing ones, and ensuring that learners have access to a safe and dignified learning environment. In addressing the challenges relating to safety and security of both the learners and the teachers, government is working on plans to combat and reduce crime in the country.

“As the country celebrates the achievements of the Class of 2024, let us also honour the legacy of transformation in the education sector over the past 30 years. Access to education has expanded significantly, and the pass rate for Matric examinations has steadily improved, reflecting the progress made in teaching, learning and resource allocation.

“The class of 2024 is encouraged to carry forward the values of resilience, dedication and excellence as they embark on the next chapter of their lives,” the GCIS said.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has commended the matric Class of 2024 for their exceptional achievements, highlighting their dedication and the significant strides made in South Africa's basic education sector.

President Ramaphosa said the achievements of the Class of 2024 are a proud contribution to and evidence of the nation’s progress during 30 Years of Freedom and Democracy.

“These results reinforce our resolute development of our nation’s most valuable resource - our young people. They also provide proof that we are undoing apartheid’s planned legacy of intergenerational indignity, disadvantage and poverty for the majority of South Africans.

“These results demonstrate the agency, resilience and pride of the youth of our nation in creating a better future for themselves and for all of us,” he said following the announcement of the results on Monday. -SAnews.gov.za

Mukuru Launches Mobile Wallet in Zimbabwe to Bolster Financial Inclusion

Location: News
MukuruNext-generation financial services platform Mukuru (www.Mukuru.com) has launched a mobile wallet in Zimbabwe called Mukuru Wallet. The secure digital store of value follows Mukuru's award of a Deposit-Taking Microfinance Institution (DTMFI) licence in Zimbabwe by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe.

Building on Mukuru's trusted capabilities, which support more than three-million Zimbabwean customers, the wallet has several benefits, including its standout features: two pockets that allow users to send and receive money locally and internationally from mobile phones, safe storage of funds as well as a free cashout on international transfers.

Marc Carrie-Wilson, Send Money Home Zimbabwe CEO says: “The Mukuru Wallet is a significant development in the country because we have built a reputable brand by consistently ensuring cash availability when needed. To avoid disappointing people who travel long distances to receive their remittances which they use for food, school fees and other essential services, we now have 250 of our own service points. With a network stretching across urban and rural areas, we can reach more people than ever, providing constant cash availability and valuable digital solutions, such as the Mukuru Wallet, to the underserved communities.”

Mukuru Zimbabwe Financial Services CEO, Doug Tait-Knight, says: “Mukuru takes its role as a fintech driving financial inclusion seriously. With this wallet, we tap into our strength which lies in our robust network and technology, as well as our crispy notes that are always available, making this an exciting moment in our evolution in Zimbabwe.

“The wallet environment enables us to start providing additional value such as allowing more affordable domestic money transfers, supporting safety by eliminating the need for customers to walk around with large sums of money, and providing convenience and cost savings, such as paying for electricity, buying airtime, settling DSTV bills and paying for insurance from their couch. Our use of multiple channels also ensures accessibility for our customers,” explains Tait-Knight.

While currently focusing on private end users, soon organisations will be able to partner with Mukuru to make use of its local capabilities and global footprint to facilitate payments, such as distributing money to farmers, supporting payroll for small businesses and securing traceable aid distributions. Various organisations such as Cottco and the United Nations, through the World Food Programme, and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) already partner with Mukuru.

Kevin Nyakotyo, Mukuru's Enterprise Sales Manager for Zimbabwe and Zambia, added, “Our success in the end-user sector has enabled us to set in motion plans to enter the business sector. Whether it is for tobacco or cotton, payments made to farmers are often large sums of money. The Mukuru Wallet will make receiving these large sums of money far safer because beneficiaries won't need to draw all their cash at the same time.

“We have a mandate to educate the market based on trends we see, and with this wallet, we are reaching out to both organisations and individuals and giving them peace of mind to know their funds will be safe and can be collected at any time. They can draw an amount that suits them with full confidence the cash will be available wherever they are, whenever they need it,” says Nyakotyo.

SA’s natural resources can drive inclusive growth: President Ramaphosa

SA’s natural resources can drive inclusive growth: President Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa’s tourism sector, largely underpinned by its natural endowments, has great potential to drive inclusive growth.

“As the festive season makes way for the start of the new year, many South Africans have been returning home from different parts of the country. Some people have been visiting family, while others have been exploring new places.

“This is a time of year when we get to appreciate why our country is such an attractive destination for visitors. We are blessed with natural splendour that is an integral part of our national heritage. It is an asset to our economy that every year draws millions of tourists from around the world to our shores,” the President said in his newsletter to the nation on Monday.

Over the past week, the President was in the Western Cape and visited Robben Island, which is one of the country’s major tourism attractions. A leading industry publication recently ranked Robben Island, alongside Table Mountain and the Kruger National Park, as among the top tourist attractions on the continent.

Beyond the substantial natural resource endowments of the beaches, national parks and biodiversity conservation areas, cultural and heritage tourism is also thriving in South Africa.

“We are home to 12 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These include Robben Island and the Cradle of Humankind in Gauteng, which has among the largest known concentrations of Hominid fossils in the world.

“Last year, the World Economic Forum ranked South Africa as Africa’s premier tourism destination. It said this was due to factors such as our business operating environment, information technology and tourism infrastructure and services,” President Ramaphosa said.

Following a slump in tourism numbers as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, inbound tourism is on the rise. In 2023, South Africa recorded around 8.5 million international tourist arrivals. These visitors spent over R95 billion.

Domestic tourism is the mainstay of the tourism economy. Between January and July last year, South Africans took over 21 million trips to explore their country.

President Ramaphosa said the tourism sector has the potential to be even larger than it currently is.

“We are scaling up a range of tourism promotion strategies to restore inbound tourism figures to pre-pandemic levels. These strategies include an improved tourism visa regime, streamlining the tour operator license process, increased investment in tourism infrastructure and services, and improving safety and security at tourism sites.”

The tourism sector in South Africa employs about 1.5 million people both directly and indirectly. Through the Presidential Employment Stimulus, South Africa continues to support job creation by providing work opportunities for young people as tourism monitors in different provinces and supporting tourism-related SMMEs.

Tourism is a growth area for small business development. In line with the global shift towards sustainability, figures from South African Tourism show that increasing numbers of new tourism ventures are centred around sustainable tourism and eco-friendly business practices.

This year, South Africa will host the first ever summit of the G20 on African soil.

“We will use this opportunity to profile and actively promote South Africa as a tourism destination of choice,” President Ramaphosa said.

According to UN Tourism, the G20 economies represent over 70% of all international tourist arrivals worldwide and 82% of tourism’s global GDP. Just as Brazil did last year during its hosting of the G20 Summit, South Africa will promote the role of tourism in creating jobs and advancing sustainable development in the countries of the Global South.

The Government of National Unity has identified the growth of tourism as a vital part of creating employment. In October last year, the Minister of Tourism released a new White Paper on the Development and Promotion of Tourism in South Africa. This will guide our approach to building a sustainable, competitive and inclusive tourism industry.

“By working together as government, business and communities, we can ensure that the natural splendour of our country becomes a driver of economic growth, job creation and shared prosperity,” the President said. – SAnews.gov.za

A Booming Continent Needs a New Payment Infrastructure

Location: Business
MultiChoice Group

Africa is an exciting, vibrant and creative place to do business. But make no mistake, it has its challenges. Currency devaluation, political instability, and service disruptions are endemic. Africa is not for sissies, as the saying goes.

In navigating those challenges, relationships matter. It's not so much about throwing money at a problem, it's about investing time, building trust, meeting with partners and regulators, and understanding each other's needs.

Africa offers an enormous upside for those prepared to make this time investment. The continent's population is set to reach 2.5 billion (http://apo-opa.co/3W7Kp4w) by 2050, and Africa's people are embracing digital technology, as the World Bank (http://apo-opa.co/3Waln4F) confirms. They are leveraging digital connectivity to improve their lives, educate themselves, send remittances, and start small enterprises. There is value in investing in that level of human development.

The payments opportunity

Running through this African growth trajectory is a particular business thread: payments (http://apo-opa.co/3WawLxk). There are opportunities for anyone who can simplify, rationalise and standardise payments for the continent's dynamic financial economy.

An organisation in just such a position is MultiChoice (www.Multichoice.com/), the leading pan-African video entertainment provider for almost 40 years. In building a pay-TV network across the continent, with up to 23.5 million (http://apo-opa.co/3WawOJw) customers across 50+ markets, and 100 million+ monthly viewers, MultiChoice also built relationships across the continent to collect payments, for DStv, GOtv, and Showmax – potentially the only large enterprise to need such enormous breadth.

The Group has converted the opportunity that this represents, partnering with global venture-capital firm General Catalyst and payments company Rapyd to launch Moment (http://apo-opa.co/4ad1H5N), which aims to be the broadest, deepest payment network across Africa.

Launching with Showmax and DStv as initial clients, Moment started processing payments for parts of the group in January 2024. By November 2024 MultiChoice was already collecting around 35% of its revenue through Moment rails, and those numbers are rising quickly. Services to other enterprises were rolled out in August.

Moment already collects and disburses across 44 African countries, accepting 200+ local payment methods – spanning in-person payments at over 1 million store and agent locations, mobile money, credit and debit cards, bank transfers, and digital wallets.

Enabling consumers and businesses to move from cash to digital, Moment and its network offers users access to better financial opportunities, lower prices, higher quality goods and services, and full access to the digitally enabled economy.

Expanding the ecosystem

To access the initial target market of large enterprises that will benefit from the reach, breadth, and high performance needed by MultiChoice, Moment has built out a fully cloud-native infrastructure. The platform can deliver on the high daily and weekly loads needed for one of the largest billing bases on the continent, and also smoothly deal with the potential for network outages, power cuts, and other disruptions.

In order to ensure businesses have access to the daily cash flow they need, Moment has built a robust financial reconciliation and settlement system capable of automating and simplifying the daily reconciliation process for enterprises and enabling them to spend tight staffing budgets efficiently, while getting fast, accurate financial reporting and access to their receivables.

To help these enterprise customers expand their customer bases, Moment opens up the largest mass-market suite of payment channels through its network, enabling businesses to fully tap into the mass market's buying power for the first time with a single API connection – providing access to more than a million in-person payment locations across spaza shops, modern retail locations, and a host of online payment options tuned to the needs of each local market.

To ensure that Moment's clients and the market are ready for the future, Moment is building a “coalition” around real-time payments, to educate consumers on the benefits of PayShap and other real-time payment methods that can significantly reduce cost and increase payment speed. DStv and Moment launched PayShap payments in South Africa as the first “consumer to business” real-time payment option built on South Africa's RPP payments system. Moment has developed partnerships with similar systems in the SADC countries and Nigeria to expand real-time payments as the market evolves.

Simplifying the process

One of the reasons MultiChoice first looked at the payments space was precisely because it is a complex environment, characterised by multiple service agreements, commission rates and exchange rates. It made sense to try to simplify the payments landscape, for everyone's benefit.

Africa is a challenging territory, but Africans are agile and innovative. Trends and new solutions emerge constantly. Any platform entering this space must recognise that there isn't one answer; there are many. By partnering with MultiChoice, Moment has built out technology with the flexibility to configure the right solution for each market.

eThekwini bans fishing activities in Umngeni Estuary

The eThekwini Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal has announced the prohibition of recreational and fishing activities from the Umngeni Estuary to the Blue Lagoon non-bathing beach.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the municipality said the decision was in accordance with the Coastal Compliance Notice, issued by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE).

This follows severe sewage discharge near the mouth of the Umngeni River.

The directive by DFFE is in line with Section 59(1) of the National Environmental Management: Integrated Coastal Management Act no. 24 of 2008.

The city said it was conducting an extensive investigation to trace the source of the discharge of sewage effluent along the Umngeni Estuary.

“Once the investigation is complete, the city will undertake repairs to any damaged infrastructure that may have resulted in the discharge of untreated effluent into the Umngeni Estuary,” the municipality said.

According to the municipality, the key contributing factors to pollution and E. coli, particularly affecting estuaries and beaches, are due to the relentless theft and vandalism of the city’s sewer infrastructure, as well as illegal connections into the sewer system.

“The city is making every effort to attend to all infrastructural defects that may pose a risk to the environment and urges the public to report vandalism and the theft of infrastructure to police, so that perpetrators are apprehended,” the municipality said.

The municipality has urged fishermen to adhere to the fishing restriction at the Umngeni Estuary and Blue Lagoon “until further notice while the investigation is underway.” – SAnews.gov.za

Deadline looms for unconventional gas regulations inputs

Interested parties have one week left to submit written comments or make inputs on the proposed Unconventional Gas Regulations.

The Department of Water and Sanitation has made provisions for a second round of public consultations and comments on the proposed Unconventional Gas Regulations.

Water and Sanitation Minister, Pemmy Majodina, published the Gazette Notice 51642 on 22 November 2024, and granted the sector key stakeholders and the public sector 30 days to make representations on the proposed regulations.

The regulations include fracking, coal bed methane and underground coal gasification.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, department spokesperson Wisane Mavasa said the stakeholder engagements started early in December 2024 and were put on hold on 15 December 2024 to accommodate the holiday season.

“A new round of public consultations has since resumed on Monday, 6 January 2025, and members of the public can make written submissions, or attend stakeholder engagements to be announced in due course in order to make contributions.

“Interested parties have until 15 January 2025 to submit written comments or make input during stakeholder engagement processes,” Mavasa said.

The Department of Water and Sanitation has been tasked with the responsibility of formulating regulations that will oversee the use of water for exploration and production of onshore naturally occurring hydrocarbons that require stimulation, including hydraulic fracturing and underground coal gasification, to extract, commonly known as “fracking”, which is an activity of drilling underground to extract gas by the gas industries.

“These activities were announced in Parliament but were found to have adverse impact on the environment due to the chemicals used during fracking. As the department is mandated to protect, manage, control, and develop water resources, regulations guiding the activities of fracking were developed.

“The regulations will manage these activities as they have a possibility of contaminating the water resources, particularly groundwater. The department formulated these regulations as mandated by the National Water Act,” Mavasa said.

Mavasa explained that the first notice was published on 07 May 2021 and had provided a period of 60 days for the public to make written inputs on the regulations. However, it was extended by another 30 days following requests from affected stakeholders.

After considering the comments received and ensuring alignment with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), Mavasa said the department has decided to regazette for public comments.

Members of the public are urged to send written submissions to unconventionalgas@dws.gov.za by 15 January 2025. – SAnews.gov.za

Mozambique Prepares to Tap into Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Potential

Location: Business
African Energy Chamber

With plans underway to restart construction of the delayed $20 billion Mozambique LNG project, which promises to produce 13.1 million tonnes of LNG per year for domestic use, it has never been more important to prioritise peace and stability in Mozambique. Following the 2024 general elections, violence during protests has rocked the country, leading to unrest and instability. As the voice of Africa's energy sector and an advocate for Mozambican prosperity, the African Energy Chamber (AEC) (www.EnergyChamber.org) fully supports the country's government and calls for peace, stability and sustainable development as Mozambique enters a new era of energy growth.

Since the discovery of significant natural gas deposits off Mozambique's northern coast in 2010, expectations for the country's economic prosperity have soared. An IMF report predicted $500 billion in total revenues by 2045 and average annual real GDP growth of 24% from LNG exports between 2021 and next year. Energy majors TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil and Eni are developing integrated LNG projects, while new upstream companies are entering the market and gas-to-power projects are nearing completion.

Projects such as Coral Sul LNG, the Rovuma LNG facility and the Temane gas-to-power plant have the potential to attract billions of dollars in investment and revenues while providing stable energy to over 2 million homes by 2030. These developments represent not only a success story for international investors, but also a success story for Mozambique. The country is positioned as one of the most dynamic gas markets on the African continent, with offshore reserves that could push it into the world's top ten producers, accounting for up to 20% of African production by 2040.

Geopolitically, these industrialization efforts could benefit the Southern African region as a whole and transform the country into an energy hub for neighboring countries such as Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Swaziland, and South Africa. In addition, a 2,700 km coastline along the Indian Ocean makes Mozambique a gateway for ships crossing the hemisphere, allowing it to specialize in efficient and global energy production while diversifying access to quality goods at low prices from markets in Asia, India, Europe, and America.

For Mozambique to realise its immense potential, however, it is essential that the country remains firmly committed to political stability and sustainable development. A peaceful and stable environment is the foundation on which the international community can confidently build long-term partnerships, ensuring that the immense opportunities presented by the development of its natural resources translate into tangible benefits for all. Mozambique's journey to becoming a leading energy producer is intimately linked to its ability to promote unity, security and democratic principles. A sustained commitment to peace will not only reassure international investors, but will also strengthen the country in a way that drives broad-based prosperity for its people and solidifies its role as a key player in Africa's energy future.

“Peace and stability are essential for Mozambique to unlock its immense economic potential. As the country emerges as a global energy hub, the confidence of the international community rests on a unified and secure nation. A commitment to peace will not only ensure the success of the multi-billion dollar energy projects, but will also ensure long-term prosperity, driving sustainable growth for Mozambique and the entire Southern African region. To achieve this, the government must find common ground and reach agreements that translate into long-term benefits for all the people of the country,” said NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the AEC.

In the interest of Mozambique's prosperity, social well-being and economic development, the AEC calls on the government and opposition to strike a balance and commit to post-colonial and post-conflict stability. Mozambique is at a crossroads: one path leads to increased instability, while the other has the potential to transform the country into a trusted partner in the global energy community.

Limpopo Premier welcomes arrest of a 28-year-old for statutory rape

Limpopo Premier welcomes arrest of a 28-year-old for statutory rape

The Limpopo Provincial Government has praised the quick action of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Seshego, which resulted in the arrest of a 28-year-old man for statutory rape.

The arrest follows an incident where a 13-year-old girl gave birth at Seshego Hospital on 25 December 2024.

SAnews reported today that over 1 360 babies were safely delivered at public health facilities across the country on Christmas Day.

According to the National Department of Health, the number of teen mothers has decreased from 145 in 2023 to just under 90.

Among the new teenage mothers is a 13-year-old who gave birth to a healthy baby at Seshego Hospital, located outside Polokwane.

Three 15-year-olds delivered their babies at Emmaus, Hlabisa, and St Andrews Hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal.

In addition, a 16-year-old gave birth to a baby boy at Klerksdorp-Tshepong Tertiary Hospital in the North West.

Limpopo Premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, expressed her gratitude for the police’s prompt action.

“We welcome this quick response by the SAPS after the hospital had raised concern over a 13-year-old giving birth during Christmas.

“It is now our responsibility to make sure that the judiciary acts in accordance with the extent of the crime. Statutory rape is visible in many parts of our province, and we need to end such a sad chapter.”

The Premier emphasised the importance of protecting the rights of children and ensuring that justice is served.

“The man is in custody in Seshego and will soon make an appearance in court. We must remain vigilant and committed to preventing such heinous acts in our communities,” she added.

The Limpopo Provincial Government is dedicated to collaborating with law enforcement and the judiciary to eradicate crimes against children and create a safe environment for everyone.

“The government will continue to advocate for the protection of vulnerable individuals and ensure that those who perpetrate such crimes are held accountable.”

The department said the decrease in teenage mothers may be due to several interventions, including Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) programmes, a healthy lifestyle campaign, and the establishment of youth-friendly zones in primary health facilities nationwide.

These initiatives create an enabling environment for young people to access sexual and reproductive health services without waiting in the queue with general patients.

The interventions are implemented in collaboration with various stakeholders, including the Departments of Basic Education and Social Development, the South African National AIDS Council, Higher Health, loveLife, and Soul City.

The aim is to increase the uptake of family planning services, reduce stigma, and minimise unplanned pregnancies among young people by promoting contraception methods. – SAnews.gov.za

Public health facilities deliver over 1360 Christmas babies

The Department of Health has announced that over 1 360 babies were safely delivered at public health facilities across the country on Christmas Day.

This figure represents approximately 300 fewer births than the 1 708 babies delivered in 2023 and about 50 fewer than the 1 414 babies born in 2022.

The births included six sets of twins that were safely delivered in public health facilities across the country.

The first Christmas baby was born exactly at midnight at Osindisweni Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal, followed by another delivery at 12:01 am at Nkhensani Hospital in Limpopo.

Two deliveries were recorded at 12:02 am at Standerton Hospital in Mpumalanga and Madwaleni Hospital in the Eastern Cape.

The department reports that Gauteng recorded the highest number of births, totalling 393.

This is followed by the Eastern Cape with 196 births, and both the Western Cape and Limpopo each with 172 births.

Mpumalanga recorded 152 births, the North West had 102, the Free State counted 79, and the Northern Cape had 49 births.

In KwaZulu-Natal, the current number stands at 42, as the department awaits final figures.

According to the department, the number of teen mothers has decreased from 145 in 2023 to just under 90.

Among the new mothers is a 13-year-old who gave birth to a healthy baby at Seshego Hospital, located outside Polokwane in Limpopo.

Three 15-year-olds delivered their babies at Emmaus, Hlabisa, and St Andrews Hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal.

In addition, a 16-year-old gave birth to a baby boy at Klerksdorp-Tshepong Tertiary Hospital, in the North West.

Decrease in teenage pregnancies

The department believes that the decrease in teenage mothers may be due to several interventions, including Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) programmes, a healthy lifestyle campaign, and the establishment of youth-friendly zones in primary health facilities nationwide.

Immunisation and care

The department urged mothers to immediately commence the developmental journey of their newborns which entails immunisation to achieve a long and healthy life for their babies.

“For every child to achieve their full potential in terms of healthy growth and development, they need healthcare, the right nutrition, initiation of exclusive breastfeeding, immunisation and timely care during illness.”

The first 1 000 days of a child’s life are important because they lay the foundation for their physical, emotional, and academic development.

“The department will walk side by side with the new mothers as they embark on this incredible journey of motherhood,” it said, adding that parents should ensure they are up to date with immunisation to protect their children against vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles and polio.

Meanwhile, mothers who subscribed to MomConnect, a free text-based programme, are encouraged to to remain active on this platform.

The programme covers various topics such as newborn care, breastfeeding, immunisation, and appointment reminders.

Collaboration technology has become the norm in the modern workplace. Nowadays, various advanced tools, platforms, and systems are available to businesses and professional environments to boost productivity, communicate effectively, and foster better teamwork.

A growing category of collaborative display technology is large, interactive touchscreen displays that combine the features of a digital whiteboard with conferencing tools. These impressive systems are the way forward for organisations that value brainstorming sessions, real-time collaboration, integrated video conferencing, and overall increased focus and creativity among team members.

Reshaping the future of work

Technology plays a vital role in the changing workplace landscape because of the adoption of hybrid and remote work in recent years. Some of the most crucial methods to facilitate improved collaboration, communication, and productivity—no matter the physical distance—are using digital tools and platforms.

“Companies and organisations often struggle to promote effective collaboration between teams across different time zones or even continents,” says Tyrone Young, Head of Sales for Information Display and Information Technology at LG Electronics South Africa. “That is why there is such a need for innovative tech solutions like interactive displays to bridge the gap.”

Introducing the future of hybrid work

One system that is a leader in collaboration technology is the LG CreateBoard TR3DK series (http://apo-opa.co/404hUXN). While this cutting-edge collaboration display is widely used in classrooms, it is also designed to enhance corporate collaboration during meetings, brainstorming sessions, or training programs.

An impressive feature of the LG CreateBoard collaboration display is the multi-touch interaction which supports up to 40 touch points on the display at the same time. Moreover, the CreateBoard features cloud integration, making it ideal for group projects.

Speaking of collaborative projects, the LG CreateBoard is equipped with built-in collaboration tools like a digital whiteboard and ConnectedCare DMS for remote management. On top of that, using Smart Viewing Mode, multiple materials can be displayed side by side, making for productive and efficient presentations.

Maximising corporate collaboration

Several great advantages of using the LG CreateBoard in the workplace include smooth, well-organised workflows, improved meetings, and better team collaborations. For businesses where employees are split physically, the LG CreateBoard almost acts like a central hub where everyone can participate no matter where they are located.

“The LG TR3DK is an interactive, high-resolution digital display that is quintessential for streamlining workflows and improving efficiency” explains Young. “How? It provides easy cloud integration and remote device management for both IT teams and end users.”

Collaborative display technology in action

There are many examples of real-world applications of the LG TR3DK Collaboration Display in the work environment. For one, the LG CreateBoard is ideal in boardroom settings for interactive client presentations, whether that be for data visualisation, project updates, or a sales pitch. Another real-world application is using it for various training and learning sessions and workshops. This is particularly beneficial because it allows remote learners to participate and it allows for better hands-on learning.

All-in-all the LG CreateBoard is the ultimate tool for project collaboration. The multi-touch interface is a great way to encourage team members to include their real-time input, feedback, thoughts, and decisions.

“The TR3DK is a game-changer for the modern workplace,” states Young. “It breaks down communication barriers and equips teams with the tools they need to stay productive and connected in any environment.”

Looking ahead

In a world where workplaces are becoming more and more global, remote, or hybrid, collaboration technology plays a vital role. Advancements such as the LG CreateBoard collaboration display can completely change the way the workforce communicates, engages, develops, and shares information.

“LG is well-known for its innovative solutions and their focus on collaboration technology shows how they are transforming the modern work environment into a more productive place,” concludes Young.

President Ramaphosa signs National Nuclear Regulator Amendment Bill into law

President Cyril Ramaphosa has signed into law the National Nuclear Regulator Amendment Bill, which provides for nuclear safety oversight, ranging from the decontamination of defence facilities, to airline pilot safety.

The National Nuclear Regulator Amendment Bill marks a significant step in enhancing nuclear safety and aligning South Africa with global regulatory standards.

The Amendment Bill amends the National Nuclear Regulator Act of 1999 to align it with current international regulatory best practices as determined by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

“This alignment is necessary because South Africa is one of the founding members of the IAEA and is a signatory to various international conventions governing nuclear safety, as promulgated by the IAEA.

“The law gives the National Nuclear Regulator additional functions and provides for the decontamination, decommissioning and closing of national defence force facilities, equipment, machinery and scrap for civilian use,” the Presidency said in a statement on Wednesday.

The Presidency said the Amendment Bill inserts new definitions, amends certain definitions, and removes obsolete definitions, in order to align with IAEA international best practices.

“The law now empowers the Regulator to exercise regulatory oversight to provide nuclear safety assurance, that property of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), designated for release for civilian use, will not cause radiation harm. The Bill also empowers the Regulator to exercise regulatory oversight over occupational exposure of aircrew to cosmic radiation flying below 49 000 feet.

“The new law provides for the control and management of the affairs of the Regulator, including the term of office of the board and the establishment of board committees, and expands the scope of activities which cannot be undertaken without obtaining authorisation from the Regulator,” the Presidency said.

The amended law also excludes the application of the Defence Act of 2002 – which deals with permits for and inspection of - naval vessels of a foreign state that are visiting South Africa, in view of the challenges of foreign forces disclosing details of naval vessels to host countries.

The signing of the National Nuclear Regulator Amendment Bill means stronger protections for ordinary South Africans against the risks associated with nuclear materials and activities.

In simple terms, the National Nuclear Regulator Amendment Bill means:

  • Safer Defence Facilities: Old military equipment or sites that might have been exposed to nuclear materials will now be thoroughly cleaned and checked before being reused or repurposed for civilian use. This ensures they are safe and will not pose any radiation risks.
  • Protection for Airline Crews: Airline pilots and cabin crew flying at high altitudes are exposed to cosmic radiation. The new law ensures this exposure is monitored and regulated to keep them safe.
  • Stronger Oversight: The National Nuclear Regulator now has clearer rules and more power to ensure all activities involving nuclear materials are strictly controlled, protecting people and the environment from potential harm.
  • Global Standards: The updated law brings South Africa in line with international nuclear safety best practices, ensuring the country meets the highest safety standards. - SAnews.gov.za

De Lille encourages integrating community engagement into tourism

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille has highlighted the importance of integrating community engagement into tourism and conservation efforts.

“Sustainable tourism is about ensuring that the beauty and biodiversity of our destinations are preserved for future generations,” De Lille said.

As part of the annual Tourism Summer campaign, launched in the Free State in October this year, de Lille and Deputy Minister Maggie Sotyu, visited various sites in the eThekwini Municipality on Wednesday.

The visit forms part of the summer readiness activations, as well as welcoming local and international tourists, who will visit various holiday destinations across the country, over the summer period.

Joined by KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli and eThekwini Executive Committee members, de Lille and Sotyu spent time at key tourist sites, including the beach front, where they joined Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers in a beach clean-up operation.

The initiative organised by the Department of Tourism, in partnership with eThekwini Metro and the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government, marks the fifth clean-up in an ongoing series aimed at promoting environmental conservation and responsible tourism.

The clean-up campaign aligns with the government’s commitment to preserve the environment and maintain Durban’s status as a top-tier holiday destination.

The initiative also underscores the need for collaborative efforts to ensure beaches and other attractions remain clean, safe, and appealing to both local and international tourists.

The clean-up was followed by an engagement with 50 senior citizens inside the Open Bus Tour to uShaka Marine World.

Tourism Sector Masterplan

“As South Africa's summer holiday season peaks and visitors venture out to explore our diverse travel offerings, we visited these sites to inspect summer readiness and to encourage visitors to explore the country responsibly.

“This roadshow is part of the broader objectives of the Tourism Sector Masterplan to promote tourist attractions and hidden gems in all our provinces," De Lille said.

The Tourism Sector Masterplan seeks to promote tourism attractions and hidden gems across South Africa’s provinces; foster collaboration between industry stakeholders, community members, and government entities; and drive initiatives that enhance safety and environmental awareness at key tourist sites.

Presidential eThekwini Working Group

The Department of Tourism is part of the Presidential eThekwini Working Group tasked with addressing various issues in eThekwini.
The working group represents an intergovernmental collaborative approach to addressing challenges in local government, and includes active participation from all levels of government, private sector, state owned enterprises, organised labour, and civil society.

Among the workstreams, is the tourism revitalisation workstream which includes beach clean-ups and general clean up initiatives around the city.

“The clean-up programmes have been a resounding success, with over 800 participants mobilised to date. These participants include EPWP workers, tourism monitors, volunteers from government, local businesses, NGOs [non-government organisations], and local communities, showcasing a collective commitment to revitalising eThekwini.

“The Deputy Minister and I want to thank all visitors for choosing to explore our beautiful country and contributing to the success and growth of the tourism sector. We especially want to thank our domestic travellers as this is the bedrock of our sector, and we thank them for exploring and enjoying their own country,” the Minister said.

Tourism Monitors

As part of supplementing safety initiatives by the South African Police Service and local law enforcement, Sotyu said the department has implemented the Tourism Monitors initiative, which involves the training, mentorship, and deployment of unemployed youth at identified tourism sites across the country and enhance tourism safety.

Sotyu said a total of 78 tourism monitors have been deployed to various sites in the eThekwini region.

“The Tourism Monitors Programme is part of the National Tourism Safety Plan to enhance tourism safety awareness at key tourism sites; upskill unemployed youth, and reduce tourist vulnerabilities," Sotyu said.

The Deputy Minister added that the department, together with partners in eThekwini, will continue to conduct clean-up campaigns and deploy Tourism Monitors to the region, to assist with safety and upkeep of tourist sites.

Ntuli emphasised that tourism is one of the cornerstones of KwaZulu-Natal’s economy.

“Maintaining clean and welcoming spaces is not just about aesthetics but also about fostering a sense of pride and responsibility among residents,” Ntuli said. – SAnews.gov.za

Men urged to seek help when facing emotional triggers

Men urged to seek help when facing emotional triggers

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has encouraged men to speak out and seek help when faced with situations that trigger anger or emotional distress.

The call comes after a man was found dead in Umzinto, in the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal,  after killing his 25-year-old girlfriend.

Sibusiso Lawrence Ntaka allegedly killed Nontobeko Cele in Umzinto on Tuesday, and posted his confession on social media.

Ntaka was later found hanging from a tree on Wednesday, not far from where Cele’s body was found.

Ntuli has strongly condemned Cele’s killing, saying the heinous act is a grave injustice and a blatant violation of human dignity and morality.

The Premier said addressing emotions constructively is key to preventing violence and fostering healthier relationships.

“Seeking support is not a sign of weakness but a courageous step toward personal growth and building a safer, more compassionate society."

The Premier extended his heartfelt condolences to the Cele family and reaffirmed the provincial government's commitment to creating a society free from gender-based violence (GBV).

“Tragically, the perpetrator has taken his own life, denying us the opportunity to ensure that justice is served for such an evil act. This incident underscores the urgency of addressing this scourge.”

Ntuli also noted that the horrific incident occurred shortly after the launch of the 365 Days of No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, highlighting the need for sustained and intensified efforts to eradicate gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) in the communities.

“Violence against women is an attack on our humanity and the values we uphold as a society. As a province, we will not tolerate such actions, and we must work together to ensure women and children feel safe and protected,” said Ntuli.

He also called on communities, law enforcement agencies, and stakeholders to collaborate in fostering a safer environment for women and children. The importance of addressing the root causes of such violence, including societal attitudes, structural inequalities, and systemic failures were also emphasised.

The Premier said the provincial government remains unwavering in its commitment to supporting victims of gender-based violence through targeted programs and interventions and will continue working tirelessly to ensure that perpetrators face the full force of the law. – SAnews.gov.za

Concern over Limpopo Liquor Traders’ rejection of new trading hours

Location: News

Concern over Limpopo Liquor Traders’ rejection of new trading hours

The Central Drug Authority (CDA) has noted with concern the Limpopo Liquor Traders Association's rejection of the proposed trading hour regulations - aimed at curbing the harmful effects of alcohol abuse in the province.

The amendment to the Limpopo Liquor Act stipulates that no establishment will be allowed to sell liquor after midnight, as from 1 August 2024.

The act also now allows for the sale of liquor on Sundays.

Limpopo Economic Development, Environment and Tourism MEC, Rodgers Monama, said at the time that alcohol was a contributing factor in gender-based violence, child abuse, community instability, trauma incidents, rape and other crimes in the province.

Operating hours for establishments that sell liquor used to be until 2 am. Operating hours will now be reduced to midnight.

In a statement on Wednesday, the CDA emphasised that, while the liquor industry undeniably contributes to economic activity, it is equally imperative to address the devastating social and health consequences linked to alcohol misuse.

“The proposed regulation of trading hours is not a punitive measure against liquor traders but a well-considered step to mitigate the pervasive negative impacts of alcohol abuse. Research has consistently demonstrated that restricting alcohol availability through regulated trading hours is an effective strategy to reduce alcohol-related harm, including binge drinking, road fatalities, domestic violence, and underage drinking.

“The assertion by liquor traders that trading hours regulations will harm their businesses overlooks the broader societal cost of unregulated alcohol availability. South Africa ranks among the top global consumers of alcohol per capita, with alarming consequences for public health, safety, and economic productivity,” the Central Drug Authority said.

In Limpopo, the rates of alcohol-related gender-based violence, road accidents, and underage drinking, are a stark reminder of the urgent need for tighter controls, the CDA added.

“While traders argue that the regulation unfairly penalises legal outlets, it is essential to recognise that uncontrolled operating hours contribute significantly to the normalisation of excessive alcohol consumption.

“The CDA reiterates that compliance with well-enforced laws, combined with community education, is key to promoting responsible alcohol trade and consumption,” the CDA said.

The CDA acknowledged the need for a balanced approach and urged stakeholders to consider the following:

  • Enhanced Law Enforcement: Strengthening the capacity to crack down on illegal liquor outlets that undermine the industry and exacerbate alcohol-related harm.
  • Equitable Regulation: Implementing fair and transparent trading hours that balance economic viability with public health priorities.
  • Collaborative Dialogue: Creating platforms for liquor traders, government agencies, and community representatives to develop solutions that work for all parties.
  • Comprehensive Strategies: Pairing trading hours regulation with targeted interventions such as awareness campaigns, early treatment programs, and economic development initiatives.

The advisory authority noted that alcohol abuse in South Africa, including Limpopo, is not solely an issue for liquor traders, but a societal problem that requires collective action.

“Regulating trading hours is one of many tools to reduce alcohol availability and its associated harm, particularly for vulnerable groups such as women, children, and young adults,” the CDA said.

It further called on the Limpopo Liquor Traders Association and all stakeholders to engage constructively in addressing the province’s alcohol-related challenges.

While the liquor industry is a valued contributor to the economy, the CDA added that it must operate responsibly to ensure the well-being of the communities it serves. – SAnews.gov.za

A series of impactful events held between November 12-15 marked several strides forward in advancing gender equality in South Africa's Just Energy Transition.

Organized by the Mpumalanga Green Cluster Agency, the Project Implementation Unit, with support from the Climate Investment Funds (https://apo-opa.co/4iDmV0s) and the African Development Bank, the week-long programme's centre-piece was a one-day workshop on gender.

It also combined with several other events, most notably as the official launch of South Africa's Just Energy Transition Jobs First Project, the visit of Patricia Pena, Assistant Deputy Minister at Global Affairs Canada and the training of the Project Implementation Unit and provincial governmental officials on the Bank's procurement, financial management, and disbursement rules and regulations.

“We are proud to support the Gender Equality in Just Energy Transition Workshop and South Africa's Jobs First Project, advancing Mpumalanga's green economy goals, job creation, and a just, low-carbon transition,” stated Nkosinathi Nkonyane, Mpumalanga Green Cluster Agency CEO.

Assistant Deputy Minister Pena of Global Affairs Canada remarked: “We congratulate the Government of South Africa for the leadership, ambition, and partnership with us. Through the Climate Investment Funds, we are supporting advocacy and outreach programmes to build leadership from within.”

These events gathered stakeholders from national and provincial government officials, Just Energy Transition Project Management Unit, civil society organizations including women's groups and youth organizations, bilateral and multilateral development agencies, academia, and the private sector to drive inclusive and sustainable change.

Through direct engagement with local voices, the Project is fostering a collaborative environment where grassroots insights are prioritized, building a foundation for a more inclusive energy transition that centres around community needs.

A highlight of the week was the launch of South Africa's Just Energy Transition Jobs First Project. Supported by the African Development Bank, Climate Investment Funds, Irish Aid, Agence Française de Développement, and ABSA Bank, this project focuses on strengthening institutions, and empowering local communities in Mpumalanga by creating sustainable employment opportunities through gender equality, social inclusion, and skills development.

Dr Babatunde Omilola, Human Development division manager at the African Development Bank underscored: "This project is a key milestone in advancing a just energy transition for South Africa, prioritizing sustainable energy, job creation, gender equity, and social inclusion—ensuring the shift to a green economy benefits all, especially in Mpumalanga."

South Africa's Just Energy Transition Jobs First project activities were discussed with one of the strategic partners UVU Africa on a female farmers project in Bushbackridge.

Beneficiaries will receive training on sustainable and smart agriculture and receive a digital kit (tablets and data) to support their work. Suhana Bisnath Head Strategy and Product Design at UVU Africa stated: "We look forward to further collaborating with partners across sectors to ensure the ‘just' in Just Energy Transition is realised in every corner of Mpumalanga and beyond. Together, we can create a model of progress that prioritises inclusivity and innovation, building a future where no one is left behind".

Other initiatives discussed include the creation of a Gender Desk within the Mpumalanga Green Cluster Agency to facilitate dialogue among women actors, mapping of women entrepreneurs, and increased collaboration among women networks in the province. AFD's mandate in South Africa supports the Just Energy Transition by addressing poverty, inequality, and the social dimensions of energy transition through a policy-based loan focused on governance, energy access, and economic diversification. Gender equality is a key priority, with AFD collaborating with the Mpumalanga Green Cluster Agency to integrate gender considerations into the SAJJOF project.

Together, the gender workshop and the South Africa's Just Energy Transition Jobs First project reflect a commitment by the Bank and its partners to integrate gender and social inclusion into climate initiatives. These efforts align with the wider goal to foster the “just” part of the Just Energy Transition leaving no one behind especially women, children and vulnerable households.

“We are very excited to be supporting the SAJJOF project and look forward to welcoming the rising stars of South Africa's energy transition who are showing the world how women can lead the way” said Nina Kolybashkina, Gender and Social Inclusion Lead at Climate Investment Funds.

Call to expand SA-Angola trade and investment

Call to expand SA-Angola trade and investment

President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for the expansion of bilateral trade and investment between South Africa and Angola.

“During our official engagement, we reached a shared understanding that significant opportunities exist to further strengthen and expand our bilateral trade and investment relations,” President Ramaphosa said on Thursday.

The President made the remark during the South Africa-Angola Business Forum held at the CSIR International Conventional Centre in Pretoria. This as he hosted his Angolan counterpart, President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, who was in South Africa for a State Visit at the Union Buildings earlier in the day.

Speaking at the inaugural South Africa-Angola Business Forum, President Ramaphosa said it was heartening and encouraging to see a broad representation of business from the two countries.

“This is in itself a solid demonstration of confidence; confidence in the strength of the region’s two largest economies; confidence in the potential that exists for deepening trade and investment ties; confidence that the governments of both countries are taking the necessary steps to ensure that the business operating environment is improved so investments can be safe and secured,” the President explained.

The first citizen said in his engagements with President Lourenço and the respective delegations, a wide array of critical political, economic and social issues of mutual concern were discussed.

More than 20 South African entities are already investing in Angola in a range of sectors including rail, agriculture, industrial parks, oil refineries, manufacturing, IT, financial services and logistics.

“By way of example, the Development Bank of Southern Africa is financing port development, railway rehabilitation, oil and gas infrastructure and renewable energy development in Angola.

“The Export Credit Insurance Corporation of South Africa has also maintained a healthy pipeline in Angola in infrastructure development, and the Industrial Development Corporation is involved in financing the Cabinda Oil Refinery and the Cabinda phosphate project. We would like to see substantially more Angolan FDI [foreign direct investment] inflows into the South African economy,” said President Ramaphosa.

In addition, between 2003 and 2024, “only a handful” of Angolan companies were investing in South Africa in communications, financial services and the metal sector.

With respect to trade, though South Africa’s exports to Angola have grown by approximately 11% since 2019, they account for just 3% of Angola’s total imports.

South Africa’s imports from Angola have declined by some 19% since 2019.

“Casting the net wider presents immense possibilities for improving both trade and investment flows. South Africa is pursuing an ambitious economic development agenda based on export-led industrialisation.

“We seek to revitalise our industrial base, modernise our infrastructure network, and strengthen logistics and supply chain connectivity with the rest of the continent,” President Ramaphosa said, noting that this presents opportunities for cooperation in various sectors such as agriculture and agro-processing, energy and rail rolling stock.

Energy and infrastructure development

On energy matters, the President said the rapid growth of key clean energy manufacturing industries, as part of the global transition to a low-carbon economy, is an area that must be explored urgently.

“The global energy transition offers new opportunities to upgrade and diversify into technology-intensive global value chains. The transition to a low-carbon economy therefore presents scope for collaboration around critical minerals, specifically with regards to value addition and beneficiation.”

The President said infrastructure development that unlocks intra-Africa trade is a priority.

“We must build on the work already underway on the Lobito Corridor to create sustainable industries in the region. South Africa is ready to partner with Angola in the development of strategic corridors, including the Central, North and South Corridors, with the aim of transforming them into dynamic economic infrastructure projects that can promote growth.”

Cutting red tape

President Ramaphosa called on business and government to use the forum proactively.

“As government and business, we must use this forum to engage proactively around not just the possibilities that exist, but also how to resolve the challenges in the business operating environment. Companies in both Angola and South Africa have challenges that make it difficult to do business.

“Stringent business visa requirements, high export costs, onerous import processes, taxation issues and bureaucratic red tape are just some of these.

“We must be able to emerge from this forum with a clear understanding of what the main challenges are and what steps will be taken to facilitate greater market access on both sides.

“Promoting greater economic growth for the benefit of Angola and South Africa necessitates that we are agile, adaptable and responsive as both the public and private sectors,” he said. - SAnews.gov.za
