Big investment needed to drive sustainable development

Location: News

Big investment needed to drive sustainable development

National Treasury Director-General (DG), Dr Duncan Pieterse, has called for large scale and sustainable investments to ensure the global community meets its commitments to end poverty, protect the planet and build prosperous societies.

“Financing gaps for sustainable development are large and growing. The estimates by our international organisations indicate that around $4 trillion in additional investments is needed annually for developing countries,” Pieterse said on Wednesday in Johannesburg.

He was speaking during the two-day Group of Twenty (G20) Joint Sherpa and Finance Track meeting.

According to the United Nations (UN), the world may miss many of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targets by 2030 due to the delay in development progress, which may even be reversed under the combined weight of climate disasters, conflict, economic downturn and the lingering aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Sustainable Development Goals are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of everyone, everywhere.

“To achieve the SDGs by the 2030 deadline, an urgent large scale and sustainable investments push is needed,” Pieterse said.

The DG said South Africa’s G20 Presidency will strongly focus on the challenges facing emerging markets and developing countries, especially those on the African continent.

“We will also focus our attention on policies and mechanisms that support sustainable development. Many developing countries, including those in Africa experience growth that is insufficient to reduce poverty, as well as tough financing conditions and high levels of public debt that crowd out resources or development spending

“During our Presidency, there will be a very strong focus on enhancing debt sustainability through a comprehensive approach, which will include... finding ways to improve debt structuring, supporting countries with liquidity challenges and encouraging the development of local currency markets to attract domestic savings and improve debt transparency,” Pieterse said.

South Africa will also continue to obtain borrower country perspectives on debt, including through an African outreach event, with broad participation of the borrower countries.

On 1 December 2024, South Africa assumed the Presidency of the G20 group of countries, which comprises many of the world's largest developing and developed economies.

“The global economy has been put to the test over the last four years, marked by an unprecedented pandemic, escalation in geopolitical conflict and extreme weather events that have disrupted supply chains.

“The latest assessment by the International Monetary Fund that global growth is expected to remain stable, yet underwhelming, remains a concern. Higher growth is essential to improve prosperity and living standards to reduce debt, and create policy space to tackle our spending pressures,” Pieterse said.

In 2025, South Africa’s G20 Presidency will focus on strengthening macroeconomic fundamentals, accelerating climate transition and boosting productivity growth.

This week's discussion under the South Africa G20 Presidency takes place ahead of two very important events -- the 5th Finance in Common Summit (FiCS), taking place in Cape Town in February 2025, and the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD), which will take place in Spain in June 2025.

“We see these events as very important opportunities to strengthen the development finance ecosystem, scale up and redirect financing to meet our global sustainable challenges, and bring impactful changes in relation to climate and biodiversity needs.

“As we prepare to submit our Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in 2025, it is clear that our very ambitious climate action goals cannot be achieved without unlocking a similarly ambitious set of climate instruments.

“The G20 must continue to play a leading role to address the critical issues of our age, so that we can achieve both global sustainable development and development that is inclusive, equitable and leaves no one behind,” Pieterse said.

South Africa's G20 Presidency is the fourth consecutive emerging market Presidency, and it is also the first African Presidency, followed by the admission of the African Union (AU) as the second permanent African member.

The G20 was established to tackle pressing global economic and financial issues. Together, G20 members account for around 85% of global GDP and 75% of international trade.

The G20 comprises 19 countries including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, United Kingdom, and United States and two regional bodies, namely the European Union and the African Union.

The grouping therefore plays a critical role in influencing global policy making and fostering global economic stability. - SAnews.gov.za

VC4A Connects Funders of Africa’s Startup Success at Africa Early Stage Investor Summit (AESIS2024)

Location: News
VC4A

Over 300 Africa-focused delegates converged at the 11th edition of the Africa Early Stage Investor Summit, and filled up the room for the AESIS Deal Morning ready to engage with Africa's most promising founders. Next to another 15 highly promising startups, VC4A (www.VC4A.com) hosted eight female entrepreneurs from IFC's She Wins Africa program, who took the AESIS2024 stage to pitch their solutions after completing an intensive technical residency in Cape Town. The energy was palpable, reflecting the increasing investor appetite for ventures that not only deliver commercial success but also drive meaningful impact across the continent.

In the opening remarks of AESIS - which took place from the 28th to the 29th of November with the theme “Pioneering Pathways: Innovating Investment Mobilization in Africa” - VC4A CEO Vincent Hoogduijn set the tone for the two-day event. “Why does VC4A organize AESIS every year? The answer is simple - we are here to unite the African early stage investment ecosystem".

The conversations, panels, pitches and ‘investor experiences' resonated deeply with the theme, as a strong call for collaboration not only within the investor community but also from hubs and accelerators, angel groups and venture studios as well as entrepreneurs themselves.

Summing up what was a momentous event, here are the key highlights:

Day 1:

  1. Deep Dive Sessions: The discussions focused on the shifting dynamics of the African ecosystem, particularly around capital market policies, collaborations, and pipeline building. A key takeaway was the need for cross-border collaborations and the role of tech-driven platforms in streamlining the investment process. As Fridah Ntarangwi of Zidi Circle highlighted in the Collaborations and Partnerships panel, "Having functional tech-driven platforms to simplify the investment process, powered by AI and blockchain technology, is key for the ecosystem."
  2. Investor Experiences: An exclusive series of partner-hosted events to close Day 1 of AESIS2024, provided unique and casual style networking opportunities, to promote connections between investors, entrepreneurs, and leaders of industry. Partners include IFC, GIZ-SAIS, FMO Ventures, Lofty Inc Capital, TLCom Capital, Crypto Asset Investment Fund (CAIF), Digital Africa, ENZA Capital, Disraptors and Breega. The relaxed atmosphere facilitated meaningful conversations, affording the opportunity for long-term partnerships and friendships to be built.

Day 2:

  1. Deal Morning: 23 promising portfolio companies (https://apo-opa.co/3ZLzcIY) from 6 organizations - DEG Impulse: develoPPP Ventures, Digital Africa: Fuzé, Ennovate Ventures: TheNextFund, IFC: She Wins Africa, Open Startup and GIZ: SAIS program, pitched their innovative solutions to an audience of investors. The high caliber of startups and the strategic insights shared by the judges created a launchpad moment for the future of the African startup ecosystem, showcasing innovative and impactful solutions to real problems
  2. The Partner Series: Keeping momentum of the power-packed first day, the partner series held segments on Capital Mobilization, Gender Lens and Impact. Taking an apt quote from closing remarks by Thomas van Halen, Director of Investor Services at VC4A “The evolution of the African startup ecosystem reflects the growing maturity of the market, but also highlights the need for innovative and flexible exit mechanisms to meet the diverse needs of founders, investors, and funds.”

Inspiring quotes from AESIS2024

“Entrepreneurs are the architects of Africa's success” said Phuti Mahanyele-Dabengwa, the South Africa CEO, Naspers, and the AESIS2024 Guest of Honour who delivered the moving keynote on Day 1.

Anne Kabugi, Regional Gender Lead at IFC, opening the Venture Showcase - She Wins Africa pitches, tasked the delegates with a question, a food for thought: "What if I told you that Africa's food crisis is going to be solved by women?”

Nicola Tyler of The Thinking Company delivered a welcome on Day 2's Deal Morning, charging the audience with a stand out statement: “Africa is not the biggest problem in the world, it is the biggest opportunity”.

Kenza Lahlou of Outlierz Ventures shared on the Global Development Funding Panel “The role of DFIs is not to be there forever but to provide the investments that work and exit.”

Closing out at the inaugural Awards Ceremony of the Africa Early Stage Investor Summit, Tomi Davies received a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award' for his decades of commitment to promote angel investing in Africa. He delivered a moving speech with all ears listening raptly as he concluded ”Africa's youth population is the best source to build Africa's infrastructure.”

In a statement that perfectly sums up the experience of co-hosting this edition: “AESIS2024 once again pointed out that collaboration is a must,” said Vincent Hoogduijn. “It's been a tough year and we all need to work together to overcome the challenges ahead. Persistence, resilience and adaptability will be key ingredients to see the ecosystem thrive - go fast alone, go far together”

VC4A is grateful for the opportunity to serve the ecosystem as a platform to connect, inspire, and empower. Looking ahead, the collective efforts of investors, entrepreneurs, and policymakers will be essential to unlocking Africa's full potential and driving its economic growth. VC4A's commitment is to continue to unite Africa's startup ecosystems. Together with co-hosts ABAN, VC4A looks forward to reconnecting with old and new friends at AESIS2025 next year.

G20 South Africa website goes live

Location: News

G20 South Africa website goes live

South Africa’s Group of Twenty (G20) Presidency website is officially live with the national flower- the King Protea – as the logo which reflects the country's identity, landscape, and cultural significance.

This as South Africans are invited to visit www.G20.org for everything they need to know about the country’s G20 Presidency, media events and calendar meetings.

The G20 Presidency website, fully responsive and linking to social media, showcases South Africa's provinces and serves as a resource for G20 information. The website is legally protected under international agreements.

Speaking at the G20 Presidency launch and the chosen logo, the President shared his delight at the fact that the country gets to showcase not only the nation but also one of its most cherished symbols, the Protea cynaroides.

“It is a real joy and pleasure for us as South Africa to launch the work we will undertake as the President of the G20, particularly as we will be showcasing not only our country but also one of the key symbols of our country the Protea cynaroides, which is a scientific name of the Protea which is also called the King Protea.

“It’s a distinctive member of the protea and it is the largest, as it is also known as the giant protea, the honey pot the part I like most and also the King sugar bush and it is widely distributed in our country generally,” the President said on Tuesday.

The President launched South Africa’s G20 Presidency two days after the country assumed the Presidency, marking a historic milestone as the first African country to lead this influential group of the world’s largest economies.

Acting Chief of State Protocol at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), Clayson Monyela, detailed the development of the South African G20 logo with the King Protea, symbolising resilience and hope, as a central element.
The logo incorporates the South African flag's colours and a semi-circular design to represent unity and global collaboration.
Monyela explained that they went through a process to look at what would inform the logo.

He stated that the requirements for developing the logo included ensuring it reflected the country's identity. Additionally, the logo needed to highlight the nation's scenic beauty and its potential as a preferred destination for tourism and investment.
He further emphasised that the logo should represent the country as a thriving democracy and a multicultural, diverse nation.

Pride and identity

It was also essential for the logo to align with the G20 South Africa Presidency theme of “solidarity, equality, and sustainability.”
“Some of the key elements of the South Africa G20 logo include the national flower, the King Protea. The cultural significance of the King Protea, which is the national flower, is that one, it is intertwined with South African culture. Secondly, it's crown like petals evoke pride and identity. It also represents hope and regeneration.

“You would know this that it regenerates after fires, symbolising renewing and hope. It also reflects our country's resilience in overcoming hardships. It is a reminder of growth and new beginnings, even during adversity. Of course, it's a flower, so it's naturally beautiful. It is striking and captures attention and represents the breathtaking South African landscape,” Monyela said.

He added that the logo symbolises South Africa's intention to deliver a positive and solution driven G20 Presidency.

“The other thing you'll notice is that it's semi-circular; the same secular design of our logo symbolises unity, inclusion and global collaboration,” he said.

The G20 Presidency will culminate in the Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg in November 2025, where world leaders will adopt a declaration outlining collective actions to address critical global challenges.

SA eyes increased trade relations with Nigeria

Location: News

SA eyes increased trade relations with Nigeria

International Relations and Cooperation Minister, Ronald Lamola, has emphasised to his Nigerian counterpart the necessity for both nations to elevate investment and trade relations to a higher level.

“One of the overriding imperatives of our bilateral relations is the need to increase our investment and trade relations to higher levels.

“The relatively large sizes of our economies logically dictate that our economic collaboration should be yielding much bigger results,” Lamola said on Monday.

The Minister was speaking in Cape Town, where he co-chaired the Ministerial Meeting of the Bi-National Commission (BNC) with the Nigerian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu.

To enhance economic cooperation and build on established sectors that both investors have in the markets, Lamola said identifying bankable projects, especially in infrastructure development, is a key priority they should pursue together.

Lamola stressed the importance of expanding trade relations between South Africa and Nigeria, as well as utilising opportunities within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

“Our bilateral trade needs to reflect the enormous potential that is abundant in our countries,” he added.

Lamola said strengthening people-to-people relations is essential for fostering understanding, friendship, and shared values.

He is of the view that this approach also promotes tourism, creative industries, sporting events, and collaboration in education and science.

“This will also allow our citizens to appreciate the rich tapestry of diverse cultures and heritage that exists in our respective countries.”

South Africa and Nigeria are this year marking 30 years of diplomatic relations, established in February 1994.

This morning’s session focused on strengthening relations and reviewing and evaluating the progress made in implementing the decisions from previous meetings.

“As we deepen bilateral collaboration, our countries cannot avoid the historical responsibility bestowed on us to be responsive to the challenges in our regions, the continent, and the international sphere,” Lamola said.

Nigeria has consistently advocated for an international system focused on peace in global relations among nations, Lamola said.

“Nigeria, like South Africa, puts a high premium on the promotion of dialogue and peace in resolving disputes among countries.

“[Nigeria's] current and previous leadership of ECOWAS [Economic Community of West African States] illustrates this track record of highlighting the supremacy of diplomacy over confrontation.”

Lamola expressed concerns about the state of peace and security in some parts of Africa and globally.

“The world is becoming fragmented and fragile, challenging the foundations that are important for anchoring a peaceful world.

“Multilateralism is under threat as the temptation to resort to force is becoming a feature of inter-state relations in certain regions. Our continent is also grappling with a few conflict and war situations in some regions.”

As leaders seek to strengthen global institutions to be responsive to the needs of all States, Lamola said reform of some institutions has become paramount.

“It is important that progress is realised in the current engagements aimed at reforming the United Nations Security Council. This organ of the United Nations needs to be more inclusive.”

He also assured his counterpart that South Africa’s Group 20 (G20) Presidency, which the country assumed on Sunday, is committed to ensuring that African developmental priorities are highlighted.

“Once again, Minister Odumegwu-Ojukwu, I welcome you and your delegation with open arms of friendship as we open this Ministerial segment.

“I look forward to the report of the officials and hearing your insights and perspectives on the matters we are about to deliberate upon.”

South Africans called to unite against HIV and Aids

Location: News

South Africans called to unite against HIV and Aids

The fight against HIV and Aids requires all South Africans to act together, says Deputy President Paul Mashatile.

Addressing the World Aids Day commemoration at the Sisa Dukashe stadium in Mdantsane, in the Easten Cape on Sunday, the Deputy President said while significant strides have been made in ensuring that 95% of people living with HIV know their status, the same cannot be said with respect to ensuring that 95% of people who know their status are on treatment and that 95% of people on treatment are virally suppressed.

“As of June 2024, only 79% of people who knew their status were on treatment, and only 93% of people on treatment were virally suppressed.

“As a country, we need to further increase HIV screening, diagnosis, and treatment initiation while maintaining treatment adherence to keep viral suppression rates high. We urge all government departments to incorporate HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis [TB] in their workplace health and wellness programs.

“In the same breath, we call upon political parties, trade unions, student organisations, and other formations to encourage their members and supporters to know their HIV status and those who know their status to seek treatment and to remain on treatment.

“Our traditional leaders need to continue to use platforms at their disposal, such as community meetings, izimbizo, traditional initiation schools, funerals and such events, to encourage their subjects to test for HIV and TB,” the Deputy President said.

He said government would continuously rely on various stakeholders, such as religious leaders to mobilise all men and women who worship, especially those who are HIV-positive and have stopped treatment, to return to care.

The Deputy President welcomed the initiative by the Department of Health, working together with SANAC and development partners, to trace the 1.1 million people living with HIV and linking them to treatment from today to December 2025.

Mashatile said linking these 1.1 million people to treatment will enable the country to reach the UNAIDS targets of 95-95-95. This is 95% of people living with HIV know their HIV status; 95% of people who know their HIV status are receiving HIV treatment and 95% of people on HIV treatment are virally suppressed.

“Let us all play our part and contribute to making this initiative a success,” he said.

South Africa must prioritise community-led responses and interventions to “guarantee that no one falls behind”.

“I would like to urge all the Premiers to make use of the Provincial Councils on AIDS to mobilise these sectors and others that are active in the provinces to help us find the 1.1 million people.

“All employers and employment organisations must come to the party.  This is a genuine battle, and if we fail to combat HIV and AIDS, it will ultimately lead to our downfall,” the Deputy President said.

There have been many scientific advances in treatment and antiretroviral therapy, which have allowed people to live long and productive lives. Scientists are optimistic that improved treatment options can enhance prevention, and they are actively working on a cure and vaccine, he said.

“However, our country remains the epicentre of HIV and is among those with the highest TB burden. There are nearly 8 million people living with HIV, and TB remains the leading cause of death, claiming around 56 000 lives a year.

“We must always be cognisant of the fact that HIV is not only a public health crisis but also a developmental challenge and a human rights matter. Our approaches must be comprehensive, targeted, inclusive, and geo-specific.”

The Deputy President said HIV was prevalent among young people, especially adolescent girls and young women between the ages of 15 and 24, with a weekly record of 1 300 new cases. The infection rate among boys of the same age, however, is almost three times less, meaning girls are more vulnerable to HIV infection.

“A variety of factors, including the biological makeup of their bodies and their involvement in age-disparate relationships, contribute to this phenomenon. Nevertheless, we need more interventions designed for adolescent girls and young women.

“I am encouraged by campaigns such as #ForeverWena, a movement that aims to empower youth to take charge of their sexual health. It encourages open, factual, and informative discussions about healthy sexual behaviour and choices through its WhatsApp chatbot, a digital campaign available 24/7 that offers a confidential space for people to access vital information and support.”

Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane said it was important for everyone to acquire knowledge about HIV and Aids.

“Our people deserve equal rights, equal care despite their status. This is an important day for us, let’s have hope,” Mabuyane said.

He said the province would focus on young people. “We have a problem of high teenage pregnancy. Lets teach our children to be responsible,” he said.

Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi told the delegates South Africa needed to put 1. 2 million people on ARV treatment. “We need to work very hard to reach the 95 percent,” Motsoaledi said, referring to the UNAIDS targets.

Motsoaledi encouraged men especially to get tested for HIV and know their status.

South Africa joined the global community in anchoring the World Aids Day 2024 commemorations on the protection of everyone’s right to receive universal access to quality health care for all its citizens.

World Aids Day is commemorated annually across the globe in solidarity with the millions of people living with HIV as well as to raise awareness about the status of the epidemic, with a view to encourage HIV prevention, treatment, and care.

The 2024 theme: “Equal Rights, Equal Care” is a call for equal, equitable and dignified access to healthcare for all South Africans regardless of their economic status, gender, race or sexuality. – SAnews.gov.za

AHIF Heads to Cape Town for the First Time for its 13th Edition

Location: News
The Bench

The Africa Hospitality Investment Forum (AHIF), Africa's premier conference for tourism and hospitality investment, is gearing up for its 2025 edition in Cape Town. Taking place from 17 to 19 June at The Westin Cape Town, AHIF 2025 will introduce an innovative, dynamic format aimed at fostering new partnerships and facilitating deals within Africa's rapidly expanding hospitality sector - one of the world's fastest-growing markets.

Cape Town, known for its stunning landscapes and vibrant visitor economy, provides the perfect backdrop for AHIF's annual gathering. Moreover, the South African hospitality industry is projected to grow from USD 1.36 billion in 2024 to USD 1.68 billion by 2029, driven by increasing traveller numbers and a resurgence post-COVID-19.

Matthew Weihs, Managing Director of The Bench, the organiser of AHIF, commented: “We are excited to bring AHIF to Cape Town, a city that embodies the energy and potential of African hospitality. This year's event will offer invaluable opportunities for delegates to connect with top decision-makers, explore new partnerships, and gain insights from industry leaders. AHIF is where the future of African hospitality is shaped. By offering delegates the chance to explore Cape Town, we are adding a unique layer of value to their participation. The connections made and the insights gained from these hands-on experiences will be invaluable as we work together to drive investment and development across Africa.”

The new format, which is focused on networking and tailored insights, has been carefully designed to go beyond the conference rooms, introducing country pavilions from across Africa to showcase the latest opportunities in the region to investors. The advantages of the new format include personalised itineraries, hands-on workshops, roundtables, enhanced networking, and insights on economic trends. Focused on C-level hospitality and tourism investment decision-makers, AHIF continues to be exclusively focused on those who are shaping the future of hospitality in Africa.

Daniel Silke, political economist, emphasised the potential impact of AHIF: “The Africa Hospitality Investment Forum is taken seriously as an industry-leading event globally. It addresses one of the most intriguing and exciting markets, Africa, where growth rates remain high, and demographic shifts, urbanisation, and an increase in air connectivity are driving substantial interest from hotel groups. AHIF stands out not just for the expert speakers and deep insights, but also for fostering personal connections that are invaluable in this dynamic industry.”

With opportunities growing at an unprecedented rate, AHIF is more than a meeting; it's a catalyst for action, insight, and strategic partnerships that are shaping the continent's hospitality future.

Minister commends “smooth and credible” matric exams

Location: News

Minister commends "smooth and credible" matric exams

Basic Education Minister, Siviwe Gwarube has expressed her gratitude to the people involved in the delivery of successful 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations.

Gwarube commended the teachers, officials, parents and all stakeholders for ensuring smooth and credible matric examinations, which commenced on 21 October with the English Language paper.

“Your dedication and hard work have been instrumental in ensuring a smooth and credible examination process. Together, we are building an education system that upholds the values of fairness, integrity, and excellence,” Gwarube said.

Briefing the media on Wednesday, ahead of the official conclusion of the exams on Thursday, Gwarube said despite some challenges, the overall administration of the exams has been smooth, with minimal irregularities, “thanks to the collective efforts of our dedicated educators, administrators, and learners themselves”.

Gwarube said the administration of the exams highlighted both triumphs and areas for improvement.

She said stringent monitoring ensured a fair process, with high-risk examination centres closely supervised, with a minimum of 70% of centres monitored during each session.

“This robust system helped us maintain the integrity of the exams, even in the face of external disruptions,” Gwarube said.

Challenges included protest actions in some parts of the country, including Jan Kempdorp, Gert Sibande, and Limpopo, as well as inclement weather in the Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga, which disrupted the exams for several learners.

A total of 319 learners in Eastern Cape were unable to write due to flooding. However, the Minister assured contingency plans were in place to allow the learners to rewrite their exams.

“We must acknowledge the violent incidents that overshadowed the exam period in parts of the country. In the Eastern Cape, five learners were gang raped while preparing for their exams at a local house. Just weeks later, another female learner was gang raped on 13 November also in the Eastern Cape.

“These heinous acts are a tragic reminder of the dangers that many learners face, especially young girls. As we observe the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, let these incidents serve as a rallying call to all South Africans to stand against such barbaric acts.

“Schools and communities must be places of safety, not spaces of fear, violence and abuse,” Gwarube said.

She urged matriculants to celebrate the end of exams responsibly and refrain from alcohol abuse.

“I urge matriculants to refrain from alcohol abuse during "pens down" events or matric rage parties. These moments should be a celebration of achievement, not a risk to life and safety,” Gwarube said.

Over 180 marking centres set up across the country

With the conclusion of the writing of the exams, the Minister said the focus will now shift to the marking process.

The department has set up 181 marking centres across the country, all of which have been audited and deemed ready.

“All marking centres will open on 27 November 2024 with the entire process involving over 50 000 markers. To ensure consistency and fairness, the department has already conducted 60 of the 164 planned Marking Standardisation Meetings (MSMs), during which marking guidelines are reviewed and finalised.

“This rigorous process will help us deliver accurate and reliable results, which are expected to be released on 13 January 2025, with provincial education departments releasing on 14 January 2025,” the Minister announced.

Gwarube noted that significant emphasis has been placed on food safety at marking centres, with online workshops on food handling protocols currently being conducted for Examination Managers, Marking Centre Managers and School Principals, to prevent any contamination.

She said that ensuring a clean and continuous water supply and adequate hydration in high-temperature areas was integral to the department’s preparations.

“These measures tie into a broader campaign on food safety across schools. Following recent incidents involving food-borne illnesses linked to agricultural-grade pesticides such as organophosphates, the Director-General has issued a circular to all schools advising against the use and storage of such chemicals on school premises.

“We have also advised school principals to only allow onto school premises vendors and/or food items bought from vendors who are compliant with applicable laws. This heightened awareness and regulation aims to protect learners and staff from preventable health hazards,” the Minister said. – SAnews.gov.za

Connecting Stories With a Golden Thread at the Joburg Film Festival

Location: News
MultiChoice Group

The Joburg Film Festival (JFF) in partnership with the MultiChoice Group (www.MultiChoice.com) is proud to announce the theme for the highly anticipated seventh edition of the festival - ‘The Golden Thread – Connected Through Stories'. Set to take place from 11 – 16 March 2025, the festival will explore the profound interconnectedness of our shared human experiences and the timeless value of storytelling.

Guided by the festival's tagline, ‘Our Stories. Our Gold', JFF continues to embrace Joburg's identity as the “City of Gold”, with stories serving as the most precious treasures that illuminate our lives and reflect the collective wisdom of our diverse global communities.

Audiences are invited to explore the essence of connection as we celebrate ‘The Golden Thread'—an elegant reminder of the ties that bind us all, a recurring symbol that represents universal themes, emotions and truths found within the world's most compelling stories.

"We are pleased to present ‘The Golden Thread' as our theme for the next edition of the festival,” says JFF Founder Tim Mangwedi. “It represents the unbreakable link that storytelling forms between individuals, communities and cultures. Through our carefully curated selection of films, we aim to show how stories, much like threads, interlace to create a larger tapestry of shared human experience. This is a celebration of connectivity, of learning from one another, and of recognising the meaningful impact our stories can have on the world.”

The seventh edition will once again bring together filmmakers, industry professionals and audiences from across the globe to share their experiences and forge connections through the universal language of cinema. JFF remains committed to promoting diversity, inclusivity and the celebration of universal human stories.

The festival will feature over 60 local, African and international curated titles, including fiction and documentary feature-length films and shorts), with several notable world premieres already confirmed. A snippet of what's in store for film, art and culture lovers.

Starting here at home with Sebata, a gripping dark South African detective thriller directed by Norman Maake and Timmy the Kid, a rural-urban comedy from director Gray Hofmeyr, that boasts a star-studded local cast.

The Man Died is a powerful adaptation of Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka's harrowing prison memoir directed by Awam Amkpa. Set against the backdrop of Nigeria's civil war, the feature narrates a tale of resistance, courage and the indomitable human spirit.

Directed by Lebanese national Mahdi Fleifel, To a Land Unknown follows two Palestinian cousin friends as they strive to escape their desolate environment before it's too late and is shot across five countries.

Under the Volcano, directed by multi award-winning author Damian Kocur, depicts the story of a Ukrainian stranded in Tenerife, Spain, after a vacation, as they learn of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Haitian born, Paris based director Rauol Peck, chronicles the life of Enerst Cole's journey as the first black freelance photographer in apartheid SA.

Ernest Cole: Lost and Found illustrates Cole's career, peerless artistry, political strength and a moving end.

"The seventh edition will once again bring together filmmakers, industry professionals, and audiences from across the globe to share their experiences and forge connections through the universal language of cinema. JFF remains committed to promoting diversity, inclusivity, and the celebration of universal human stories. The Joburg Film Festival is a celebration of the stories that bring us together, reflecting our shared humanity and the unique perspectives that make us who we are. At MultiChoice, we are proud to partner with the festival to spotlight the richness of African storytelling, highlighting its power to connect, inspire, and transform. Through ‘The Golden Thread – Connected Through Stories,' we embrace the idea that stories are our greatest treasures, weaving communities and cultures together with purpose and passion" says Nomsa Philiso, CEO of General Entertainment, MultiChoice.

In addition to the film programme, the festival will feature a robust industry programme in Joburg Xchange (JBX), incorporating JBX Business (market), JBX Talks and JBX Youth.

JBX BUSINESS

The JBX Market has experienced remarkable growth since 2022, with 165 participants currently registered making it the fastest-growing pillar of the film festival. The market attracts a diverse range of attendees, including exhibitors, producers, content creators, festivals, buyers and investors.

Early registration is still open for interested participants via the JFF website.

JBX TALKS - Made in Joburg for Africa and the World

JBX Talks at JFF 2025 celebrate the unifying power of storytelling and the thriving film industry in Johannesburg, which resonates across Africa and the globe. We position Johannesburg as a vibrant nexus of African narratives that transcend borders and captivate international audiences.

The three-day industry programme offers dynamic panels, in-conversations, masterclasses, workshops and networking events. Participants may expand their reach, refine their craft, and unlock new opportunities that elevate African film and television on the world stage.

Festival badges which provide access to JBX go on sale with an Early Bird discounted price from Tuesday, 3rd December.

JBX YOUTH

JBX Youth is a new addition to the industry programme, running parallel to JBX Talks and JBX Business. It builds on the festival's anchor pillar focussed on the youth, the Youth & Audience Development Programme that is targeted at aspiring and up and coming content creators and filmmakers.

This 3-day programme will cover a range of topics and issues with the aim of developing, skill, empowering and nurturing the next generation of filmmakers to ensure the long-term growth, sustainability and viability of the industry.

YOUTH & AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

This initiative focuses on emerging talent and aspiring filmmakers aged 18 – 35 with the aim of equipping them with the tools they need to succeed in the film and television industry.

The Programme will launch at the Kagiso Archives Centre in February 2025, with an intense two-day workshop, offering a range of activities including film screenings, director Q&As, skills-building practicals, filmmaker forums and mentorship opportunities within the community. The programme will conclude at JFF, with the JBX Youth initiative, providing youth filmmakers with further exposure to the tools and resources they need to advance their skills and careers.

The annual Young Voices Competition which forms part of the programme which celebrates the creative talents of young filmmakers in South Africa makes its return. Under the theme ‘The Power of Sports in Film', submissions officially open on Tuesday 3rd December and entries will be accepted until mid-February 2025.

We believe that sports is a universal language, allowing everyone to participate at any level, whether competitively or just for the love of the game. The winner will be announced at the Golden Thread Gala awards ceremony in March 2025, with their film later showcased at the JFF Film Society later in the year.

Mark your calendars for 11 – 16 March 2025 and be part of the 7th edition of the Joburg Film Festival. For more information on programming, tickets and how to get involved, please visit our website at www.JoburgFilmFestival.co.za or follow us on social media for the latest updates.

Matrics urged to celebrate safely

Location: News

Matrics urged to celebrate safely

The Western Cape Provincial Government has urged matrics to celebrate the end of their school career responsibly and safely, as the final matric exams are being written today.

The final matric exams for the Class of 2024 will be written today, bringing to an end the five-week exam period.

The final exams to be written are Agricultural Management Practices, Marine Sciences Paper 2, and Design Paper 1.

“We thank the public for the support they have shown to our matrics during this period. This support has helped us to ensure that all candidates had an opportunity to write their exams, even in difficult circumstances.

“With the exams completed, a number of learners will be attending formal matric rage events and smaller end-of-exams parties. It is understandable that our matrics would like to celebrate the end of their school career, but we urge them to do so responsibly and safely,” Western Cape Education MEC, David Maynier, said.

The MEC urged all matrics attending these and other smaller events to:

  • Familiarise themselves with the safety measures at the event itself, and the relevant local emergency phone numbers.
  • Keep a close eye on their valuables at all times.
  • Keep a close eye on their beverages at all times, and not leave them unattended;
  • Report anything suspicious to the South African Police Service or event organisers immediately.
  • Avoid drinking and driving.
  • Set up a buddy system for their own safety, as well as keep in regular contact with their parents.

“We encourage parents to ensure that their children understand the risks involved in any event or party, and to ensure that they have made arrangements to stay in contact with their children and know what to do in an emergency,” Maynier said.

The national matric results announcement has been moved to Monday, 13 January 2025, in order to accommodate the first day of school.

Individual candidate results will be released at schools and on the Western Cape Education Department website from 10h00 on Tuesday, 14 January 2025.

“We look forward to celebrating with all our matrics when the results are released next year,” Maynier said. – SAnews.gov.za

African Sub-Sovereign Government Leaders and Businesses Meet in Kisumu City, Kenya to Discuss Inclusive Growth, Trade Decentralization and Investment Opportunities

Location: News
Afreximbank

Over 250 Sub-Sovereign government leaders from across Africa are today meeting in Kisumu, Kenya, for the the fourth edition of the African Sub-Sovereign Governments Network (AfSNET) Conference. Taking place between the 25th and 27th of November, the event provides a platform for Sub-Sovereign leaders and businesses to discuss how their local governments can attract investments in the region in order foster and accelerate inclusive growth and development.

Organised by African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), in collaboration with the County Government of Kisumu and the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa), the conference's overarching theme is ‘Leveraging the AfCFTA for Sustainable Trade and Investment: A Development Pathway for African Sub-Sovereigns'. The event's main objectives include strengthening the role of Africa's Sub-Sovereign governments in driving intra-African trade and investment, and the successful implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Africa's Sub-Sovereign governments, comprising states, counties, provinces, municipalities and regional authorities, play a critical role in economic development of African countries. According to the African Union, Africa's economic outlook is projected at 3.7% GDP growth in 2024, slightly higher than the global average of 3.2%. This growth elevates the integral role of Sub Sovereign governments for African economies and its people.

Understanding this, Afreximbank has committed USD $2 billion for these critical actors, to support these governments and businesses in African countries.

While delivering his keynote address at the AfSNET conference in Kisumu, Kenya, H. E. Dr. William Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya acknowledged the Bank's support for African governments including Kenya:

“I want to thank Professor Benedict Oramah for making time to join us for this conference. Your presence here is yet another example of the unique approaches that the Bank, under your leadership, employs in order to deepen its footprint by engaging with shareholders throughout the continent, including sub-national entities like Africities, and devolved governments like Kisumu. Afreximbank has consistently demonstrated innovative approaches in advancing credit to African governments and the public sector while facilitating deeper collaboration among sub-Saharan nations and Kenya is an example. This spirit of innovation aligns seamlessly with the aspirations of the African Continental Free Trade Area, creating a dynamic network of ambitious, future ready institutions and governments. Such collaborations will drive transformative engagements at the grassroots level, enabling Africa to achieve an unparalleled position in the global value chains and make substantial contributions to their bottom-up transformation.”

Speaking on the importance of the conference, President Ruto noted: “By promoting peer to peer learning, this forum strengthens cooperation among Sub-Sovereign governments. And devolution, a tremendous innovation established under Kenya's 2010 constitution, has evolved into an exemplary success story that Kenyans are very proud of, as it has brought services closer to the people, empowered grassroot participation in government, safeguarded minority rights and enhanced equity in resource mobilization and allocation.”

Professor Benedict Oramah, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Afreximbank, commented:

“The African Sub-Sovereign Governments Network (AfSNET) initiative thrives due to the concerted efforts and unwavering commitment of partners who recognise the tremendous potential of sub-sovereign governments as the engines for broad-based economic development that extends to the grassroots of our societies. At Afreximbank, we strongly believe that for developmental initiatives to succeed in our economies, they must, of necessity, be decentralized; development needs must originate and flow from the periphery towards the centre. In alignment with the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), we are passionately implementing the AfSNET initiative to promote intra-regional trade and investment. We collectively recognize that cities, states, and provinces within a nation exhibit remarkable diversity—differing in population sizes, resource endowments, skill sets, and sectoral specializations.”

Professor Oramah continued that this conference is a key prelude to the upcoming Intra Africa Trade Fair (IATF2025) scheduled to take place from 4 to 10 September 2025 in Algiers, Algeria, and delegates are welcomed to contribute to the discourse that can be elevated at the IATF2025.

AfSNET was established by Afreximbank as a platform for promoting intra-African trade and investment, educational and cultural exchanges and the fostering of effective engagement among sub-sovereigns in Africa's development and prosperity in the context of the AfCFTA.
