Renewable energy programme to be accelerated

Location: News

Renewable energy programme to be accelerated

South Africa is determined to be “ultra aggressive” in onboarding renewable energy sources.

This is according to Electricity and Energy Minister, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa.

The Minister was speaking on Monday during the Ministerial Renewable Energy Seminar held in Midrand, under the theme: "Advancing Renewable Energy: A Comprehensive Review of the IPP Procurement Process".

Ramokgopa told the gathering that it is in the “collective interest” to accelerate the renewable energy programme.

“We must be ultra aggressive in the onboarding of renewables. It must be on steroids. But we can only achieve that if we resolve the issues that you are going to share with us today. I think the future is renewables.

“We must resolve the issues of permitting and licensing, and the speed because capital has got choices. It’s not like capital is waiting and waiting for South Africa to resolve its problems. It is in our interest to ensure that we are greedy in how we want to consume this capital, and that greed will be displayed in the manner and the enthusiasm with which we are resolving the major impediments in this instance.

“We want to capture all these opportunities… for the greater good of the region,” Ramokgopa said.

WATCH | Renewable Energy Seminar

In order to build a strong renewable energy sector, “we must build confidence in the system”, the Minister stressed.

“We are going to be a bit more aggressive in onboarding renewables but I think that statement is hollow if we are not able to address the attendant challenges, the inherent weaknesses in the system.

"We must build confidence in the system going into the future, firstly, by illustrating our ability to resolve the challenges that have afflicted the previous bid windows.

“[Being aggressive means] going out to procure the megawatts that are of a scale and proportion that we have not done before. But if we have not resolved the inherent challenges, that statement will be put to waste because we will not be able to achieve that which we desire.

“So it’s important that we have that conversation and I urge you [stakeholders] to be very candid,” he said.

The Minister said his department wants to gather as much information as possible to improve on South Africa’s Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (IPPPP).

“We are here to listen on how best we can improve. Once we have listened… we will action. We really want industry to thrive for us to make South Africa the preferred destination for this capital [and] for us to run the most ambitious and successful of all renewable programmes from a public procurement point of view.

“[We want] the best one, not just on the continent, not just in the Global South but something that is of envy across the globe,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za

Deputy President assures Ireland of SA’s  commitment  to 'enabling environment' for business

Deputy President Paul Mashatile has assured Ireland that South Africa is committed to creating an enabling business environment that attracts investment, spurs economic development, and creates jobs.

“We understand the significance of collaboration with countries like Ireland, which share our values and aspirations for a better future. As a country, we want to enhance our exports of value-added goods and services to Ireland,” the Deputy President said on Friday.

This as the Deputy President undertook a working visit to Ireland to reinforce South Africa’s historic and warm bilateral relations with the nation where he is also expected to meet his Irish counterpart, Prime Minister Simon Harris.

READ | Mashatile undertakes working visits to Ireland and the UK

Speaking at the South Africa-Ireland Forum, the country’s second-in-command said the nation’s focus was on understanding the potential for growth in the global economy.

“It is our responsibility as leaders in our various regions to cultivate an environment that promotes entrepreneurship stimulates innovation and propels inclusive prosperity.”

The Deputy President said he was pleased that the two countries already trade in food and beverages.

“However, I must admit that the global pandemic has hindered our trade partnership, leading to only modest progress. We must identify measures to expedite international investment. I strongly believe that there is significant potential to significantly increase the volume and value of various products, including those that are manufactured,” he added.

He told businesspeople that there were many reasons to invest in South Africa, including the fact that the country has had political stability and peaceful elections since 1994.

“We emerged from a peaceful election and formed a Government of National Unity (GNU). All parties in the GNU pledge to uphold the 10 fundamental principles.”

These, he said, include respect for the Constitution, non-racialism, social justice, human dignity, nation-building, peace and stability, accountability, evidence-based policy, a professional developmental public service, and integrity.

The Deputy President also said South Africa prides itself on quality infrastructure and logistics, the largest presence of multinationals in Africa, a well-developed and diversified manufacturing base.

In addition, he pointed out that the country also has a lucrative emerging market, favourable market access to the global market, an innovation and technology hub, abundant natural resources, Africa’s leading financial hub, a young labour workforce, and excellent quality of life.

He also told potential investors that several South African key science and technology innovations and achievements emerge from our home soil.

He mentioned the Kreepy Krauly automatic pool cleaner, CAT scan, Q20 lubricant, Pratley Putty and Smartlock Safety Syringe.

Government interventions

Shifting his focus on the South Africa’s Economic Recovery Plan and projects like Operation Vulindlela, which he said were a collaborative effort to expedite the implementation of economic and structural reforms, are aimed at stimulating job creation and development.

To ensure the rapid expansion of energy generation capacity, he stated government’s various interventions including the announcement of a further 6800 MW of solar PV and wind power being procured through Bid Windows 5, 6, and 7.

“Future windows will procure an additional 3000 MW of gas and 513 MW of battery storage. The government has boosted private sector participation in energy generation by removing the 100MW National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) licence threshold, a game-changing announcement for the industry.

“It should also be noted that the Hydrogen Economy has been identified as a potential game changer for South Africa,” he explained.

In addition to the investment opportunities in the energy space, he said the nation wishes to explore cooperation for investment projects in sectors such as food tech, global business services, film, fintech and infrastructure in Ireland.

He believes that South Africa can benefit from Ireland’s expertise in the technplogy sector as the country is currently attracting a lot of back-office service operations from foreign companies.

“However, foreign companies from Ireland have been slow in relocating operations to South Africa.
“This engagement presents an opportunity to reverse this trend. In terms of fintech, there is a lot of capital available in Ireland that could boost South Africa’s innovative fintech. Furthermore, the film industries of both countries could benefit from enhancing cooperation in the film space could benefit both countries film industries.”

He urged Ireland to assist South Africa with the successful implementation of the projects, with the provision of requisite skills in these sectors. – SAnews.gov.za

Motsoaledi warns leaders against antimicrobial resistance

Motsoaledi warns leaders against antimicrobial resistance

Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, has described antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as a ticking time bomb that could return the world to an era where common infections are untreatable, and routine surgeries become life-threatening.

“I stand before you with a sense of urgency and hope that as we join hands to tackle the problem of AMR, we have a full appreciation of the significant threat it poses to global health, food security and development,” he said on Thursday.

The Minister was speaking at the United Nations on behalf of President Cyril Ramaphosa at the high-level meeting on AMR.

Motsoaledi believes that ARM is currently a pressing challenge, and he told world leaders that South Africa was one of the high-burden countries of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB), where this makes up 2% of the TB burden.

The World Health Organisation (WHO), he stated, has identified DR-TB as one of the top AMR threats.

“However, in responding to this threat, we continue to lag behind, especially on TB research, and global collaboration. This situation has the potential to reverse many decades of medical advancements,” he stressed.

According to the WHO, AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites no longer respond to medicines, leading to infections becoming difficult or impossible to treat, increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness and death.

Motsoaledi said the risks of these illnesses have profound economic implications, affecting healthcare costs, productivity, and overall economic growth.

“Addressing AMR is not just a health imperative but also an economic necessity that requires coordinated global action.”

He is of the view that specific actions need to be taken to preserve efforts and to ensure collective action, which must turn the tide against AMR.

“We must embrace the power of education about the prudent use of antibiotics so that we can curb the misuse and overuse that drive resistance in humans, plants and animals.”

In addition, he spoke against the practice of polypharmacy, especially as it relates to unnecessary utilisation of antibiotics.

“We also need an integrated national patient information system, so that the patients cannot be hopping between health facilities, thus collecting multiple prescriptions for the same condition.”

The Minister also called for investment in research and innovation, which he said requires some urgent intervention, through academic and research institutions.

He took the time to call for a strengthened healthcare system – equipping hospitals and clinics with the necessary tools and training will ensure that infections are identified and treated promptly and accurately.

Also, the Minister stressed the importance of champion policy and advocacy and effective policies that promote antibiotic stewardship and infection prevention can safeguard our communities.

“Lastly, we need to jointly tackle the challenges of human behaviour through the social and behaviour community communication, so that we can educate our people about the dangers of AMR.”

Motsoaledi said AMR has greater potential to also impact patient satisfaction, prolonged patient recovery and poor treatment success rate.

“Together, we can turn this crisis into an opportunity – a chance to unite, innovate, and lead the world in the fight against antimicrobial resistance,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za

SA's G20 Presidency to focus more on Global South and African issues, says Lamola

South Africa’s G20 Presidency will be centred more on the interests of the Global South agenda, especially Africa, says International Relations and Cooperation Minister, Ronald Lamola.

Preparations are underway for South Africa’s G20 Presidency and hosting the G20 Summit in 2025. South Africa is expected to take over Chair of the G20 from December 1 this year, from Brazil.

Lamola announced that South Africa’s theme will focus on solidarity, equality and sustainable development.

“This theme speaks to the developmental priorities of the Global South, particularly, the African continent, which is now fully represented with the admission of the African Union (AU) in the G20,” he told delegates during the Troika high-level address at the United Nations (UN).

The G20 (or the Group 20) comprises 19 States, plus the European Union and the AU as of this year – bringing together the world’s major and systemically important economies.

The G20 operates a Troika system of hosting, where the Troika consists of the past, present, and next Presidencies.

Brazil’s Presidency is also in a Global South Troika - India-Brazil-South Africa.

Lamola stressed that South Africa will ensure that the G20 provides strategic direction towards establishing a “more equitable, representative and fit-for-purpose international order”.

According to the Minister, the theme will also confirm South Africa’s intention to build on the efforts and successes of the G20 Presidencies of Indonesia, India and Brazil.

He believes this will ensure that the needs, interests and aspirations of the developing economies of the Global South, and Africa especially, drive the overall G20 agenda going forward.

According to the Minister, South Africa’s overarching theme will also zoom in on the country’s priorities. These include accelerating efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the objectives of Agenda 2063 of the AU and addressing the critical issue of debt vulnerability of many countries of the global South.

The country will also focus on creating consensus around reform of the International Financial Architecture (IFA) and the Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs).

“This is critical to ensure that they become fit for purpose to adequately address sustainable development and transboundary challenges,” Lamola explained.

In addition, the emphasis will also be on combating climate change, which has devastating consequences for food security in developing countries.

South Africa also hopes to address issues of predatory mining by some countries and corporations, in the quest for Africa’s raw materials and critical minerals.

“South Africa will take forward the outcomes of the report of the UN Secretary’s Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals,” Lamola said, adding that strengthening the Multilateral Trading System was also key.

The other key issues the nation will advance include industrialisation, employment and inequality, food security, the blue economy and artificial intelligence.

Lamola took the time to commend Brazil President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s call, as the G20 President, for the reinvigoration of multilateralism, and the reform of global governance institutions to make it more representative and inclusive.

“We further thank Brazil for its innovative leadership in calling for this G20 meeting and inviting all UN Members.

“This meeting today and its call to action further demonstrates the collective global solidarity in addressing current and future global challenges. South Africa will carry forward the momentum laid by Brazil on the reform of the multilateral institutions,” Lamola said.

Meanwhile, he said that South Africa’s G20 Presidency will mark the end of the first cycle of G20 Presidencies.

“We intend to undertake a review of the first cycle of G20 Presidencies. This is critical to ensure implementation. Brazil can count on us to maintain the momentum they’ve started I thank you for your attention,” he added.

President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his appreciation to Brazil as the current President of the G20 for convening this meeting.

The President also commended the excellent way Brazil has been steering the work of the G20 during its Presidency.  – SAnews.gov.za

Plan for reshaping conservation revealed

Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Narend Singh has unveiled a plan that advocates for a thriving environment for people and nature by 2040.

“We are today declaring a path towards a time in the future when nature and people both thrive because of how they would have reshaped the terms of their co-dependence,” Singh said on Thursday in Johannesburg.

Addressing the occasion of the reveal of Vision 2040, the Deputy Minister said the plan was about shifting the needle in terms of shared economic growth and job creation in a manner that promotes a much stronger embrace for nature.

Vision 2040 was launched under the theme “For A Life in Harmony with Nature,” which talks to a deliberate effort to ensure benefit sharing through sustainable development practices which can be articulated around the elements of people, planet and prosperity.

“Ours is a great, exciting and ambitious mission which speaks to how by 2040 we hope to have reshaped the character of conversations, plans and ambitions happening in our streets, homes, boardrooms, in public discourse and even possibly education to embrace our cultural and natural heritage,” the Deputy Minister said.

The main aim of Vision 2040 is to promote social justice and inclusivity by guaranteeing that all communities, particularly the disadvantaged and marginalised ones, have fair access to opportunities and resources and that conservation is a catalyst for growth and prosperity and the betterment of people’s livelihoods.

“Vision 2040 is part of our deliberate contribution of an element of the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) that we need to grow our conservation estate to be constituted so that 30% of the land and 30% of the sea be placed under protection by 2030 (commonly known as 30X30).

“It also indicates that communities living in and adjacent to conservation must tangibly benefit from the economic opportunities created. The creation of Mega Living Landscapes (MLLs), which as we have heard are vast, integrated areas that balance human development with natural ecosystems, and will be a major priority,” the Deputy Minister said.

This work is also linked to the National Biodiversity Economy Strategy.

Vision 2040 promotes sustainable economic development by leveraging biodiversity as a catalyst for social and economic transformation.

This includes promoting eco-tourism, sustainable agriculture, and green businesses that generate income while using and conserving natural resources.

“By aligning conservation efforts with economic activities, we aim to create job opportunities, support local economies and small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) and provide sustainable livelihoods,” Singh said. - SAnews.gov.za

Ramokgopa attends BRICS Energy Ministers Meeting

The Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, has called on the BRICS Plus bloc of countries to work together to assist and support member countries to tackle energy challenges.

The Minister was delivering his opening remarks at the 9th Annual BRICS [Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa] Energy Ministers' Meeting in Moscow, Russia.

“We believe that this BRICS group of like-minded country members has a huge potential, and working together will strengthen this resolve through cooperation on energy security.

“[It will] also provide an opportunity to join efforts to annihilate the challenges diagnosed during the BRICS 2023 Summit held in South Africa, such as addressing the lack or absence of integrated energy policy framework, diversification and beneficiation at source of critical minerals, infrastructure development, manufacturing, technology transfer and intellectual property, scaling up energy efficiency, mobilisation of finance and investment, as well as skills and capacity building, amongst others,” Ramokgopa said.

He called on the member countries to “tap and dig deeper into various capabilities and strengths" to ensure mutual support in harnessing the individual potential each country has at its disposal.

“To mention a few opportunities, it is mining and beneficiation of critical minerals, and rare-earth elements required to power the green economy, [expand] hydro power potential, promising hydrogen solutions and its derivatives, gas, nuclear - including small modular reactors, renewables, storage, biofuels, as well as clean coal, and carbon capture utilisation and storage,” the Minister said.

Ramokgopa highlighted that the meeting of BRICS Energy Ministers comes at a critical time, as countries ponder ways to transition towards low carbon economies.

“This meeting comes at a critical phase where our countries are grappling with the challenge of balancing developmental goals with energy transition pathways.

“We must ensure that these transitions safeguard energy sovereignty and security, promote sustainable economic development, facilitate universal access and respond effectively to environmental imperatives, all the while ensuring no one is left behind,” he said.

He told the meeting that the expansion of the BRICS bloc of countries is a “clear affirmation of the group's growing significance and influence in the global energy agenda”.

“This is a pivotal moment, positioning BRICS to reshape, refocus, and reset the global energy architecture to ensure energy access, security, affordability, and eradicate energy poverty and promote a just energy transition.

“For us as South Africa, we see this as an opportune moment to clearly articulate our collective position as the developing nations that will enable us to continue to use our energy resources through innovative technologies that allow us to move from high emitting to low emitting energy systems, and thus achieve carbon-neutrality or net-zero at a pace and scale that is in line with our different national circumstances and capabilities.

“In this regard, we want to reiterate that our approach to an inclusive and people centred energy transition is informed by the need to maintain energy security in support of socio-economic objectives,” Ramokgopa said. – SAnews.gov.za

Waste to wealth: solutions for a sustainable future

Location: News

Waste to wealth: solutions for a sustainable future

By Deputy Minister Bernice Swarts

For decades, the rapid urbanisation and industrial growth experienced by many nations, had come at a high environmental cost. Landfills overflowed, plastic waste contaminated rivers and oceans, and emissions from improper waste disposal intensified the climate crisis.

The International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) Congress 2024, themed "Waste to Wealth: Solutions for a Sustainable Future," signalled a turning point, with the idea that waste could be transformed into wealth resonating deeply.

The congress brought together global experts, policymakers, and business leaders to share cutting-edge practices in waste management and the circular economy. But more importantly, it showcased South Africa's commitment to turning its waste challenges into economic opportunities.

The government’s introduction of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Regulations and the accent of the Climate Change Bill into an Act marked a significant shift in how the nation approached waste. The EPR Regulations require manufacturers to take responsibility for the lifecycle of their products, from production to post-consumer waste. This policy forces businesses to rethink how they design, produce, and manage products, pushing them toward more sustainable practices.

The Climate Change Act further aligns the nation’s policies with its environmental goals. It ensures that South Africa’s response to climate change, particularly in transitioning to a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy is supported by robust legislation. This act not only aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also promotes the creation of green jobs and investments in the emerging circular economy.

However, one of the most remarkable aspects of South Africa’s waste management evolution is the active role the private sector plays. While government policies set the framework, it is private companies that help drive real change. Faced with regulatory requirements, businesses are beginning to take ownership of their waste, investing in recycling technologies, sustainable product designs, and waste-to-energy initiatives.

The idea that waste could be a resource, rather than a burden, has begun to reshape industries. For instance, South Africa’s plastic manufacturing sector was forced to adapt to new requirements mandating the inclusion of recycled content in products. This sparked a wave of innovation, as companies began developing new methods to incorporate recyclates into their production processes. Similarly, the construction industry began embracing the reuse of demolition waste, reducing its dependence on raw materials and lowering its environmental footprint.

While these changes are promising, the waste crisis is still far from being resolved. This is due to municipalities across South Africa being overwhelmed and lacking the necessary infrastructure to handle the growing volume of waste. Many cities and towns have inadequate waste collection services, let alone the advanced recycling and waste-to-energy facilities needed to close the loop in a circular economy. Additionally, the waste management sector is in dire need of investment, and the ISWA Congress offered a unique platform for South Africa to engage with international experts and potential investors.

What made the congress particularly significant was its global scope. Waste management has long since ceased being a local problem; it is a global one, particularly in the fight against plastic pollution.
South Africa found itself in the unique position of contributing to international discussions on the issue, especially through its involvement in the development of a legally binding instrument on plastic pollution. The country is increasing its recycling capacity for plastic waste, and it supports global efforts to eliminate plastic pollution by regulating product design and prioritizing recyclates.

As South Africa prepares for its G20 presidency in 2025, the outcomes of the ISWA Congress took on even greater importance. The country has an opportunity to set the agenda on sustainability for some of the world’s most powerful economies. The government-to-government (G2G) session held during the congress provided a critical forum for sharing best practices with other nations, many of which were facing similar challenges. These exchanges were crucial, as they not only helped shape South Africa’s preparations for the G20 but also fostered greater international cooperation in addressing global waste and sustainability issues.

One of the most pressing priorities for the South African government remained job creation. The waste management sector, particularly through the circular economy, offers a promising avenue for addressing the nation’s high unemployment rate. Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) are already benefitting from government and private sector support to enter the waste management space.

Condolences to family of victim affected by freezing weather conditions

The Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities Sindisiwe Chikunga has extended her heartfelt condolences to the family of the woman who lost her life in adverse weather conditions that hit parts of the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal provinces.

"We are deeply saddened to learn that a woman lost her life to hypothermia due to these unprecedented weather conditions. She was a passenger in a taxi travelling from Johannesburg to KwaZulu-Natal," the Minister said in a statement on Wednesday.

The 39-year-old woman died on Saturday while trapped in the blizzard that engulfed the N3 between Van Reenen’s Pass, connecting KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State.

This was confirmed by paramedic services, Midlands EMS [emergency medical services] Rescue Medics, in a statement.

According to the medical service, the Midlands EMS Howick crews, along with Midlands EMS Rescue Medics, were dispatched to a shopping centre in Merrivale for a person who had collapsed after being exposed to severe cold overnight, while in a taxi stuck in traffic in the snow.

Chikunga commended the exemplary selflessness and solidarity shown by South Africans who came to each other's aid in what were life-threatening circumstances.

She also added that South Africa is experiencing unusual climate change related incidents, marked by an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, as well as rising mortality rates.

The severity of these events continues to disproportionately affect marginalised communities—those who often lack the resources to cope—most of whom are women and persons with disabilities.

“While this is a global phenomenon, the impact of climate change related disasters is not uniform. Recent research published by the World Bank shows that "across the globe, women and persons with disabilities experience mortality rates up to four times higher in natural disasters than those without.

“We express our condolences to those who have lost their loved ones, and we urge all South Africans to closely monitor weather reports to avoid areas projected to experience extreme weather conditions,” the Minister said.

In his address at the National Heritage Day celebrations on Tuesday, Acting President Paul Mashatile emphasised the need to recognise the growing impact of climate change on the nation's well-being and cultural heritage.

Mashatile urged citizens to be mindful of how climate change threatens both livelihoods and cultural traditions.
The Acting President expressed his honour in addressing the nation on Heritage Day but noted that celebrations were overshadowed by severe weather affecting parts of KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape, and the Free State.

“It is a great honour and privilege to address you at this significant occasion as we celebrate our country’s Heritage Day. Unfortunately, as we were looking forward to this day, some parts of our country, which include Kwa-Zulu Natal, Eastern Cape and Free State, were impacted by severe weather conditions, exacerbated by climate change,” he said at the celebrations held in Ficksburg, Free State.

Meanwhile, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) said the country is set to experience a mix of warm and cool temperatures in the coming days, with a significant drop in temperatures and even light snowfall expected later this month.

This after the weekend’s freezing temperatures and snowfall in some parts of the country caused havoc on the roads, resulting in one fatality.

TNPA invites service providers for Liquefied Natural Gas at Ngqura

The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), in collaboration with Infrastructure South Africa (ISA) and the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), has approached the market for an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

This is to encourage interested parties to submit proposals for the envisaged Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal at the Port of Ngqura.

READ | Port investments to contribute towards SA economy

The Request For Proposals (RFP) process will see the appointment of a service provider contracted to assess the environmental compliance and sustainability of the proposed LNG terminal.

This involves conducting a detailed analysis of ecological and local regulations to determine critical environmental authorisations. These include a seismic survey, marine ecology, climate change impact assessment and socio-economic assessment to support the project.

The EIA process is carried out in tandem with negotiations of the Terminal Operator Agreement (TOA) between TNPA and the Strategic Fuel Fund (SFF) to build and operate an onshore LNG regasification facility at the Port of Ngqura for 30 years.

The appointment of SFF is the outcome of a Section 79 process and directive issued by the former Minister of Transport, in accordance with the National Ports Act of 2005.

“This milestone is a critical step towards the development of the LNG terminal at the Port of Ngqura. Through its commercial seaports, TNPA is at the forefront of enabling the gas-to-power project pipeline whilst ensuring the security of supply and unlocking global opportunities for sustainable impact,” said Acting TNPA Chief Executive, Phyllis Difeto.

The Port of Ngqura LNG Terminal is one of 12 priority infrastructure projects announced in March 2024 that hold a Strategic Integrated Project (SIP) status.

The triad strategic partnership is fast-tracking the conclusion of the EAI, with the RFP closing on 30 October 2024. This partnership will also see the issuing of the RFP for Prefeasibility Studies by end September 2024.

“ISA is established to provide strategic, technical and financial advisory support to project sponsors for the planning, preparation, development and implementation of national pipeline projects and strategic integrated projects,” said Mameetse Masemola, the Acting Head of Infrastructure South Africa.

“This project is one of the flagship projects which we are proud to support and excited that progress is moving at a good pace,” he said.

Call for unity in the empowerment of women

Call for unity in the empowerment of women

Deputy Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Mmapaseka Steve Letsike has called on nations to unite all efforts and resources for the empowerment of women and girls.

The Deputy Minister was addressing a side event of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA79) held in New York on Wednesday.

She acknowledged that the challenge of women empowerment “is great” with women and girls facing many obstacles.

“We reiterate the severity of this challenge before us as the state of women’s empowerment leaves little to be desired, and the overall picture is consistent globally, with pockets of excellence in certain areas of development.

“Women still own a smaller share of global wealth compared to men, with the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) reporting that women owned $72 trillion of global wealth in 2020 which translates to about 17% of the total value of the global wealth held by individuals in that year.

“This disparity is linked to factors such as gender pay gaps, unequal access to financial services, and fewer opportunities for leadership roles,” Letsike said.

She added that although the challenges facing women empowerment are “evolving at an unprecedented pace”, a brighter future for all can be forged by “uniting our efforts and resources”.

“The Education Plus Initiative stands as a beacon of hope, illuminating the pathway toward empowerment for girls and young women in the fight against the spread of HIV and an increase of AIDS related deaths.

“It emphasises the vital importance of equipping women with education and skills, access to finance, security of land tenure, entrepreneurial opportunities and appointment of women to positions of leadership in both the private and public sectors.

“By doing so, we not only enhance women’s participation in the labour market but also unlock women’s immense potential to drive sustainable economic growth as meaningful participants in the various sectors of the economy.”

The Deputy Minister added that nations need to adopt an “intersectional lens as we advance policy for the empowerment of women and adolescent girls”.

“This will ensure that the unique and overlapping experiences of individuals or groups are recognised, thereby allowing us to craft our agenda to be more equitable and inclusive.

“As leaders and stakeholders in this transformative journey, we bear a profound responsibility to ensure our institutions and policies are adept at addressing the challenges of both today and tomorrow, particularly for marginalised persons,” Letsike said.

She called on world leaders to build a better future for women and girls today.
“As we move forward, let us be inspired by the potential within our youth, especially our girls. They are not just the leaders of tomorrow; they are the catalysts of change today.

“Together, we can build a world where their dreams are not limited by their circumstances, but rather fuelled by the opportunities we create for them,” Letsike said.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is leading South Africa’s delegation to the High-Level General Debate of the 79th Session of the General Assembly (UNGA79) in the United States of America. The debate of the UNGA79 is taking place at the United Nations headquarters in New York, from 24 to 30 September 2024.

Minister Gwarube commits to stabilising the education system

Location: News

Minister Gwarube commits to stabilising the education system

Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube and her deputy, Dr Reginah Mhaule, have committed to take all necessary steps to stabilise the education system given the budgetary constraints affecting provinces.

The Minister said this while addressing the media on developments regarding budget cuts in the education sector, in Pretoria, on Wednesday.

“The Deputy Minister and I have been in constant engagement with provinces to support them during this challenging fiscal environment. We have committed ourselves to doing everything we can to stabilise the system and have appealed to provinces to retain the basket of posts, in order to not compromise education outcomes,” the Minister said.

She also moved to appreciate the work that the provinces have been doing around the clock to help the sector get to grips with these challenges.

“I have witnessed MECs work tirelessly with their provincial departments to protect teaching and learning in our schools.”

Challenges

The briefing comes weeks after several provincial Departments of Education have been vocal about the budgetary pressures they face.

These, said the Minister, have been years in the making due to the aggressive budget cuts, economic stagnation and fiscal mismanagement which is now set to impact schools.

“These budget pressures are not just numbers on a spreadsheet - they translate into fewer teachers, reduced textbooks, and fewer admin support staff, which means teachers spend more time on admin work, thereby reducing learning and teaching time. In essence, the very fabric of our children’s future is under threat.”

She explained that provinces like the Western Cape have seen the painful decision to reduce the basket of teaching posts for 2025, a move that may result in fewer educators in classrooms.

“This may mean larger class sizes, reduced individual attention for learners, and ultimately, a risk to the achievement of quality education outcomes.”

She added that unfortunately, other provinces throughout the country are in a similar position with many desperately working to find ways of avoiding having to top slice budgets for key services like textbooks, admin support and scholar transport programmes.

“We are faced with a pending national crisis, one that affects not just our learners but our teachers, principals, and broader communities.

“It is crucial to understand that this crisis is not confined to one province or one aspect of the education sector. Every province is grappling with these painful choices.”

Provincial education departments will in the next two to three years, find it increasingly difficult to fund their existing basket of posts and existing programmes within the available budget, unless measures are taken proactively to mitigate this risk.

For instance, she said in the 2025/26 financial year, four provincial departments will battle to cover their budgets; in the 2026/27 financial year, five provinces will battle to cover their budgets. In the 2027/28 financial year, seven provinces will not be able to afford their budgets.

“Several provinces have preserved the same post basket for the past three academic years, despite learner numbers increasing, while other provinces have decreased their posts in the past three years. It is important to note that these have been cuts in posts but not warm bodies.

“Meaning that no person gets retrenched but rather vacancies are not filled,” she said.

Increase in learner numbers

Nationally, the Minister highlighted that the number of learners within the education system has increased by approximately 292,820 over the last five years.

Learner/Educator Ratios have also steadily increased across most provinces.
She explained that an increase in learners' numbers without increasing the post basket, may affect the quality of teaching which may soon be reflected in the performance of the system.

Largely, she added that the financial constraints have had the largest impact on educator provisioning, leading to a steady increase in Learner/Educator Ratios in most provincial education departments.

“Most provincial Education Departments require between R350 million and R3.8 billion [over the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework to fully fund their respective basket of posts].

“The numbers are staggering. If we continue down this path, projections indicate that most provincial education departments will not be able to maintain their respective basket of posts,” she said.

Interventions

In response to this potential crisis, Minister Gwarube said she convened two special meetings of the Council of Education Ministers (CEM). These meetings brought together education MECs from across the country and they conducted a thorough analysis of the budget challenges in each province.

MECs from each province have compiled provisional provincial reports with sobering results.

“For the first time in a decade, we now have a clearer picture of where the most significant budget pressures lie and how we need to engage treasury in a bid to address the challenges we see.

“As a result, I have requested an urgent meeting with the Minister of Finance to discuss the matter further. I am grateful to Minister [Enoch] Godongwana for his cooperation and support on this important matter.

“We are also appreciative of Treasury’s willingness to engage with the Education sector. Ultimately a solution must be found in order for us to protect front line services,” the Minister said.

Gwarube has also requested a convening of a political 10X10 meeting between the Minister of Finance and the provincial MECs for Finance, as well as herself and the nine MECs of Education.

“We must work together with all 10 treasuries to unlock additional funds to alleviate the pressures facing the education sector, even if it is for the short term, and to prevent further cuts to teaching posts and critical support services like school nutrition and transport.

“We also need to look at cross-departmental reprioritisation of budgets from departments that have under-performing programmes – ensuring that funding across government is directed to appropriate national priorities,” she said.

The Minister concluded that while the sector faces significant challenges, “these are not insurmountable. But they require decisive action and an unwavering commitment to putting education first.”

Earlier this month, the Department of Basic Education said that the Minister had held meetings with various international partners to reinforce South Africa's commitment to enhancing the education sector through global collaboration.

Minister welcomes initiative to support investment in water sector

Minister welcomes initiative to support investment in water sector

Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina has welcomed an initiative by Just Water Partnerships (JWPs), which supports investments in water resilience and sustainability in low- and middle-income countries.

While participating in a panel discussion at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States of America, the Minister said there is a need for partnerships in the water sector to ensure that people have access to clean and fresh water.

“As the government of South Africa, we support a growing cohort of partners who are interested in developing the concept of Just Water Partnerships.

"We also believe that carefully and collaboratively structured JPWs can protect existing water resources and will leave no one behind regarding the provision of water and sanitation services, and ensure that water supplies are managed sustainably,” Majodina said on Wednesday.

The JWPs concept was formulated following a report by the Global Commission for the Economics of Water (GCEW), which highlighted that traditional economics have failed the water sector, and that a new approach to the economics and governance of water should be taken to achieve a more sustainable, just and prosperous future for all.

JWPs are thus conceived as platforms that facilitate financial and governance actors (multilateral development banks, regional development banks, development finance institutions, national governments, city and local authorities, and public development banks) to support investments on their own balance sheets, as well as to catalyse greater private finance.

The Minister said the JPW concept mirrors the Department of Water and Sanitation’s commitment to build public-private partnerships to make clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene normal for everyone in the country.

This is in line with achieving Sustainable Development Goals 6.1 and 6.2, which aim to achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all and ensuring access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all, and end open defecation.

“Therefore, this confirms a need for such a platform to not only ensure that investments are used efficiently and transparently, but also in a way that prioritises women, girls and others facing marginalisation globally,” Majodina said. -SAnews.gov.za

‘We will not remain silent as apartheid is perpetrated against others’ – President Ramaphosa

Location: News

'We will not remain silent as apartheid is perpetrated against others' – President Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa has told the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) that South Africa will not remain silent and watch as apartheid is perpetrated against others.

In his address to the Assembly's annual high-level debate on Tuesday, President Ramaphosa said the South African story bears witness to the enduring role of the United Nations in global affairs.

In supporting South Africa’s struggle for liberation, the President highlighted that the UN affirmed the principles of the UN Charter – fundamental human rights, the dignity and worth of every person, and the equal rights of nations large and small.

“It affirmed the aspiration contained in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that we should strive for a world free of barbarous acts that outrage the conscience of mankind.

“We South Africans know what apartheid looks like. We lived through it. We suffered and died under it. We will not remain silent and watch as apartheid is perpetrated against others. Through the United Nations and the instruments it wields, we must end this suffering,” the President said.

He further reiterated South Africa’s call for an immediate cease fire, and for the release of all hostages.

He highlighted that the violence the Palestinian people are being subjected to is a grim continuation of more than half a century of apartheid.

“The only lasting solution is the establishment of a Palestinian State, existing side by side with Israel with East Jerusalem as its capital,” he said.

Earlier this month, The Presidency announced that South Africa is set to submit its Memorial to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in October 2024, presenting evidence to support its claim that Israel is committing genocide in Palestine.

The Memorial will outline facts and arguments as part of a broader legal effort to hold Israel accountable under international law.

Addressing the conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Sudan, Yemen, Ukraine, and the Sahel region, the President highlighted the country's role in supporting international efforts for conflict resolution.
“Our moral conscience further demands that we exert every effort to bring peace to the Democratic Republic of Congo, to Sudan, to Yemen, to Ukraine and to the troubled Sahel region. We must realise the aspirations of the people of Western Sahara to self-determination.”

He emphasised that achieving and maintaining peace and security requires the collective will of the community of nations.

Reform of the UN Security Council

“It requires that the UN Security Council is representative and inclusive. Seventy-eight years since its formation, the structure of the UN Security Council remains largely unchanged.

“Africa and its 1,4 billion people remain excluded from its key decision-making structures.  The Security Council has not fulfilled its mandate to maintain international peace and security,” he said.

The President called for the UN Security Council to be reformed as a matter of urgency and become more inclusive so that the voices of all nations are heard and considered.

“Africa stands ready to play its part in building a safer global order. The African Union and its member states are engaged in mediation, dialogue, and diplomacy across the continent, to create conditions under which peace and development can take hold.

“There must be greater collaboration between the AU [African Union] and the UN towards resolving these conflicts, and also in addressing their root causes,” he said.

President Ramaphosa is leading South Africa’s delegation to the High-Level General Debate of the 79th Session of the General Assembly (UNGA79) in the United States of America.

The High-Level General Debate of the UNGA79 is taking place at the United Nations headquarters in New York, from 24 to 30 September 2024.

Speaking at the African Minerals Forum hosted by the Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU) and Prosper Africa on Monday, the President emphasised the importance of the critical minerals sector in driving global economic growth and sustainability.

By leveraging key sectors such as mining, energy, and manufacturing, the President said South Africa is set to improve its business environment and attract much-needed investment.
The President addressed the session on the sidelines of the UNGA.

Department of Health commemorates World Environmental Health Day

The Department of Health is joining the global community in commemorating World Environmental Health Day (WEHD).

The 26th of September 2024 marks the 13th WEHD to raise awareness about environmental health issues and promote actions to improve and protect the environment for the wellbeing of all living creatures, including humans.

South Africa’s WEHD kicked off today, 25 September, and will continue until tomorrow at the Wild Coast Sun International, in Port Edward, Eastern Cape.

According to the department, environmental health is critical in addressing climate change mitigation and adaptation, and disaster risk reduction to create resilient and sustainable communities.

“Climate change and disaster risks are fundamental threats to sustainable development, the living and health conditions for all humans on the globe and the reduction of poverty,” the department said.

The department believes the negative impacts of environmental health issues threaten to roll back decades of development gains.

“Building resilient and sustainable communities means addressing both climate change and disaster risks, and integrating these risks and potential opportunities into development planning and budgeting.”

This year’s WEHD commemoration will focus on creating resilient communities through disaster risk reduction and climate change mitigation and adaptation, which has been adopted in alignment with all the environmental health functions.

The event will be attended by political principals and environmental health experts. – SAnews.gov.za

Critical minerals sector key to driving global economic growth

Location: News

Critical minerals sector key to driving global economic growth

President Cyril Ramaphosa has emphasised the importance of the critical minerals sector in driving global economic growth and sustainability.

By leveraging key sectors such as mining, energy, and manufacturing, the President said South Africa is set to improve its business environment and attract much-needed investment.

He was addressing the African Minerals Forum hosted by the Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU) and Prosper Africa on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 79), in New York, USA, on Monday.

He highlighted that four months ago, South Africa held national general elections, which ushered in a Government of National Unity, where 10 political parties have come together to coalesce around a common agenda for economic growth and sustainable development.

President Ramaphosa underlined South Africa's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change through the country's Just Energy Transition Plan. This plan aims to guide the shift from coal to renewable energy, while also ensuring equitable economic opportunities for affected communities.

“South Africa's and Africa’s critical minerals sector has a crucial role to play in this regard, and we recognise the importance of collaboration with other countries to develop the potential of our critical minerals sector.

“The US in particular has established expertise in advanced mining technologies, automation and sustainability practices.

“We want to strengthen our ties with US companies and institutions to foster technological advancements, enhance supply chain efficiencies and attract investment into our mining sector,” the President said.

The President also emphasised that South Africa strongly endorses the United Nations Secretary-General’s position paper on Critical Energy Transition Minerals, where he highlights the importance of beneficiation, benefit sharing, local value addition and economic diversification.

“It would not be an understatement to say that the minerals that lie beneath the soil of Africa are powering the green energy revolution. Thirty percent of the world’s proven critical mineral reserves are found in Sub-Saharan Africa.

“South Africa has substantial reserves of platinum group metals, manganese, vanadium as well as chromium.

“These resources are fundamental to the development of cutting-edge technologies that drive progress in various sectors. What will be critical is to ensure that this progress does not leave Africa behind,” he said.

The President stressed the need to avoid perpetuating colonial-era exploitation, where African countries primarily export raw minerals. He said that by focusing on beneficiation and domestic processing, African nations could see significant economic growth.

President Ramaphosa highlighted that beneficiation and local processing of critical minerals could increase the continent’s GDP by 12% or more by 2050.

He cited estimates suggesting that African countries could generate USD 24 billion annually in GDP and create 2.3 million jobs by investing in mining beneficiation and domestic processing.

President Ramaphosa highlighted the strides made by SASOL, South Africa’s flagship petrochemical company, in leading green hydrogen technologies research and development.

“As the global automotive industry moves towards Electric Vehicles and New Energy Vehicles, we are leveraging our rich experience with automotive production to get some of the world’s leading automotive manufactures with a footprint in South Africa to produce more their green vehicles in our country,” he said.

Despite improvements in the beneficiation of South Africa’s mineral exports, President Ramaphosa admitted that more needs to be done.

He underscored the country’s commitment to creating a supportive policy framework for the critical minerals sector, focused on streamlining regulations, fostering innovation in mining technologies, building workforce skills, improving transport and logistics infrastructure, and incentivising investment.

South Africa's five-point policy approach aims to create a supportive environment for the critical minerals sector. This includes simplifying regulations, supporting research and development in mining technologies, investing in workforce skills, improving logistics infrastructure, and incentivising domestic and international investment.

“South Africa also has a beneficiation strategy that seeks to translate the benefits of our country’s mineral endowments into a national competitive advantage.

“As the UN Secretary-General’s paper has noted, Critical Energy Transition Minerals can transform economies, create green jobs and foster sustainable local, regional and global development,” he said.

President Ramaphosa further stressed that for the potential of critical minerals to be fully realised, both mineral-producing nations and their end-user countries must embrace inclusivity.

He emphasised the importance of creating decent work opportunities, eradicating exploitative practices such as child and forced labour, and ensuring human rights protections.

Local beneficiation and industrialisation were highlighted as priorities, alongside environmental safeguards to ensure sustainable extraction practices.

The President urged for a long-term focus on inter-generational equity, recognising that critical minerals are vital for solving global challenges like climate change, energy, and food insecurity.

He called on US companies to collaborate in fostering sustainable development.

“By leveraging our respective strengths, pursuing strategic collaborations, and implementing supportive policies, we stand ready to meet the demands of the global market and drive sustainable development.

“I call on US companies and investors to join us on our journey,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za

Let’s be alive to the impact of climate change – Acting President Mashatile

Let’s be alive to the impact of climate change – Acting President Mashatile

As South Africa celebrates Heritage Day, Acting President Paul Mashatile emphasised the need to recognise the growing impact of climate change on the nation's well-being and cultural heritage.

Delivering the keynote address during Heritage Day celebrations in Ficksburg, Free State, Mashatile urged citizens to be mindful of how climate change threatens both livelihoods and cultural traditions.

Unfortunately, as we were looking forward to this day, some parts of our country, which include Kwa-Zulu Natal, Eastern Cape and Free State, were impacted by severe weather conditions, exacerbated by climate change.

“In celebrating our heritage, we must be alive to the impact of climate change on not only our wellbeing, but also on our culture. Extreme weather conditions such as those witnessed over the past few days affect some of our cultural and heritage sites, therefore undermining our national goals to protect and preserve our culture for generations to come,” he said.

Mashatile expressed empathy for those affected by the recent extreme weather events in parts of South Africa.

“We empathise with those who were affected by the widespread extreme weather. We would also like to commend Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, and Government Departments for their prompt and robust multi-sectoral response. Additionally, we commend the provinces that were impacted for their prompt activation of their disaster response structures,” the Acting President said.

He said the response teams led by NATJOINTS remain on standby to respond to any eventualities and continue to assist affected communities.

“Even while these teams are committed to helping and saving those in need, we nonetheless ask that our people exercise caution and pay close attention to any warnings issued by the South African Weather Service.

“These meteorological conditions emphasise even more how important it is to increase our investments in technology that may improve weather predictions.

“We can save lives by providing early warnings of storms, heat waves, and disasters. Our sincere condolences to the families of those who have lost their loved ones,” he said.

The Acting President urged the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture to explore policy considerations concerning the impact of climate change on the nation’s historical heritage, but also provide direction on how best the country can preserve the national identity in this era of multiple global challenges. – SAnews.gov.za

President Ramaphosa urges US business to invest in SA’s growing economy

President Ramaphosa urges US business to invest in SA’s growing economy

President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on US businesses to deepen their investment ties with South Africa, highlighting the country's renewed focus on economic recovery and structural reform.

Speaking at the SA-US Interactive Business Forum in New York on Monday, the President emphasised the progress made under South Africa's Government of National Unity (GNU) and the vast opportunities available to foreign investors.

He said this is a “timely intervention”, referencing his first visit to the US since South Africa's general elections in May, which led to a coalition government of political parties committed to inclusive growth and job creation.

“The advent of the Government of National Unity has renewed investor optimism in the South African economy. The message I bring to US investors today is that this optimism is well-placed.

“South Africa is firmly on the road to recovery, and we invite you to be part of this journey. Investments in South Africa are secure. Our business environment is stable. This is supported policy certainty and regulatory safeguards,” the President said.

He added that South Africa intends to stay the course on the structural economic reform process, on scaling up investment in key infrastructure, and on improving the business operating environment.

The President noted South Africa’s success in attracting investment, revealing that the country had achieved its target of raising R1.2 trillion (approximately USD 63.6 billion) ahead of schedule in 2022.

“We have announced a new target of approximately R2 trillion or approximately USD 100 billion over the next five-year period up to 2028.

“The far-reaching structural reforms we have implemented over the past six years have opened up the country to increased levels of investment that continues to grow,” the President said.

Ramaphosa particularly underscored the potential in the clean energy sector, which has attracted significant investment, supporting South Africa’s commitment to decarbonisation and energy security.

"We are equally committed to a Just Energy Transition that is inclusive, that take our developmental needs into account, and that leaves no community behind.

“We have a supportive and enabling industrial policy that incorporates amongst others expanding the special economic zones, driving export-led growth, and harnessing the potential of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area or AfCFTA. In January 2024 we began preferential trading under the AfCFTA,” he said.

The President emphasised that the Government of National Unity is furthermore committed to prudent monetary and fiscal policy and to strengthening regulatory and legislative frameworks to combat corruption.

The President also highlighted the importance of strategic partnerships with US businesses, especially in sectors like advanced manufacturing, energy, healthcare, and infrastructure.

“South Africa and Africa is ripe for investment in financial services, advanced manufacturing, energy, healthcare, infrastructure development, mining, science and technology and other sectors. South Africa is also developing the value chains of the future.

“With substantial reserves of critical energy transition minerals, we are positioning ourselves to be at the forefront of the green energy revolution,” he said.

He added that as the country with the world’s largest platinum group metal reserves, South Africa has a competitive advantage when it comes to the production of sustainable energy technologies, including electric vehicles, new energy vehicles and renewable energy components.

President Ramaphosa praised the collaboration between the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), following the 2022 Memorandum of Understanding. He stated that the partnership between the two stock exchanges “promotes cross-border investment and drives economic growth on a global scale.”

The President further highlighted the US as one of South Africa’s most valued trade partners, noting that bilateral trade totalled USD 17.6 billion in 2022.

He also praised the impact of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) in fostering trade and creating jobs in sectors like automotive, agriculture, and precious metals.

With Africa's population expected to reach 2.5 billion by 2050, President Ramaphosa painted a bright picture of the continent's economic prospects, noting that the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) would "drive a wave of industrialisation and create dynamic regional value chains."

“This too presents opportunities for US businesses and investors, and opens up new markets for their goods, products and services.

“Mutually beneficial trade and investment not only unlocks the dynamism and potential of an entire continent. It will also aid Africa’s efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals,” the President said.

In closing, President Ramaphosa reassured investors of the stability and security of investments in South Africa.

“South Africa is open for business. Sustainable and inclusive growth spurs development and creates jobs.

“Together, we can forge a path to shared success and progress, leveraging our combined strengths to achieve enduring prosperity for our people,” the President said. – SAnews.gov.za

Kumi Naidoo Appointed President of Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative

Location: News
Fossil Fuel Non Proliferation Treaty Initiative

As the Fossil Fuel Non Proliferation Treaty Initiative (https://FossilFuelTreaty.org/) embarks on a new phase of the campaign and the development of the global Treaty, the Initiative announced today the appointment of Kumi Naidoo, globally recognized South African environmental and human rights leader, as its new President. Naidoo brings over three decades of activism and leadership experience to the role, and will help spearhead the organization's mission to secure a global plan for a just, financed and equitable transition away from fossil fuels.

Kumi Naidoo, whose activism has its roots in South Africa's tumultuous political past, has been a leading voice advocating for climate justice, sustainable development, and human rights across the world. As former Executive Director of Greenpeace International and Secretary General of Amnesty International and CIVICUS, he has been at the forefront of pivotal movements shaping environmental policy and social justice.

In response to his appointment, Kumi Naidoo said: “Throughout my life, I have sought justice for those marginalized by unjust political, economic and energy systems, especially in the Global South. The Fossil Fuel Treaty embodies this mission—it is a movement for global justice. It recognizes that to effectively address the climate, health, environmental, economic and social risks posed by fossil fuels, we must foster international cooperation for a rapid and just transition away from these harmful resources, ensuring that countries, communities and individuals in the South are not left behind. We must bring together world leaders who are committed to protecting what we love and have the courage to take action—the governments leading this initiative are the ones already doing that.”

The World Health Organization (https://apo-opa.co/3ZwZmQ5) estimates that outdoor air pollution, largely caused by fossil fuel emissions, contributes to over 4.2 million premature deaths annually. From compromising health, security, and livelihoods to fueling conflicts globally, fossil fuels undermine all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (https://apo-opa.co/4dkGGGp). The scientific and economic evidence is clear: there can be no new fossil fuels in a healthy, thriving world.

“There are enough solutions out there in the world to transition away from oil, gas and coal, but that requires countries to stop expanding these projects and start focusing on clean, safe and fair energy sources. We need bold ideas, and this is the biggest new idea there is, and just at a time when the power and deception of the fossil fuel industry are finally being exposed, and countries are beginning to realize that we need to phase out fossil fuels. The Treaty is a blueprint for how to do that in a fair and equitable way. Later is too late. The race to see who will join the growing bloc of countries at the forefront of the solution is on; and the time to act is now.”, reinforced Naidoo.

Kumi Naidoo's strong commitment to equity and innovative approach to advocacy were celebrated by the members of the initiative's steering committee. They emphasized that these qualities are essential as the Fossil Fuel Treaty initiative enters a critical phase on the mission to unite countries to negotiate a new, binding global plan for a rapid and fair transition away from oil, gas, and coal. The Steering Committee also takes the opportunity to welcome a new Co-Chair, Reverend James Bhagwan, General Secretary of the Pacific Conference of Churches.

Tzeporah Berman, Chair and Founder of the Fossil Fuel Treaty initiative and a long-time environmental activist, commented on Naidoo's appointment: “I am thrilled to welcome Kumi Naidoo as the new President of the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative. Kumi's visionary leadership, deep understanding of global issues, and unwavering commitment to justice make him the addition we need to help guide our movement through this crucial phase of the campaign as we bring more governments on board. His passion for the cause and extensive experience in climate advocacy will be instrumental as we strive to unite nations and make this Treaty a reality. True leadership is measured by the courage to confront the bullies in the oil and gas industry, declare that their time is up, and create a clear plan for a sustainable future. The Treaty is that plan, and Kumi is one of those true leaders. He has done it before, from fighting apartheid to contributing to the negotiation of the Paris Agreement – and together we will do it again now, to address the greatest threat of our time. We are also thrilled to welcome Reverend James Bagwan as a Co-chair to the Initiative. Reverend James brings years of experience and crucial perspectives from the faith community and leadership from the South Pacific.”

Mohamed Adow, Founder and Director of Power Shift Africa, and member of the Fossil Fuel Treaty Steering Committee: “Africa – and the world – is burning, both literally and figuratively. The appointment of Kumi Naidoo as President of the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative brings strengthened inspiration to our movement, at a time when we can no longer accept weak leaders and their empty promises. We share the rage at the reality of climate impacts and energy poverty that plagues our continent. And we share a commitment to fight with those who bear the brunt of a crisis they have not created. Africans have been marginalized in the quest for justice, our rights violated and our contributions overlooked. With Kumi joining the leadership of this Initiative, we are set to amplify the vision and voice of our continent, and demand the change our people deserve. Accompanied by Rev James as Co-Chair it is clear that the Fossil Fuel Treaty is a marker of equity and justice in international negotiations.”

Tasneem Essop, executive director of Climate Action Network, and member of the Fossil Fuel Treaty Steering Committee: “As someone who participated in the transformative power of global solidarity during the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa, I welcome Kumi's appointment as President of the Fossil Fuel Treaty with great hope. In our historic struggles we have always defied the odds and succeeded. We must now believe again that we can fight the existential threat of fossil fuels through our collective action. Kumi's leadership will help contribute to building the kind of people-powered movement we need to safeguard our future. We must harness that spirit of solidarity to tackle the culprits of the climate crisis and protect our communities and our planet. Together with Rev James joining as Co-Chair, and with the entire leadership of the Fossil Fuel Treaty initiative, we can be optimistic about winning this fight for a just and fossil free future."

Reverend James Bhagwan, General Secretary of the Pacific Conference of Churches and new Co-Chair of the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative Steering Committee: ”I am deeply honored to be named the new Co-Chair of the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative Steering Committee. The call from communities, governments, and churches from the region that is spearheading the political call for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty is a powerful affirmation of the just transition we urgently need. It also highlights the vital role that faith communities play in mobilizing climate action. The ecological transformation we seek through the Fossil Fuel Treaty requires that we abandon our self-centered attitudes and act collaboratively for the good of the collective. Together with other leaders in this movement, we must cultivate the will to do what is right and just, have the foresight to sacrifice immediate gains for the greater good, and inspire hope that we can leave our children a healthier and more sustainable world than the one we inherited."

The Fossil Fuel Treaty initiative aims to negotiate a binding global agreement to phase out fossil fuel production fast and fairly, aligned with scientific and economic consensus. As world leaders prepare for crucial negotiations this September in New York City, Naidoo's leadership is expected to elevate the urgency of this mission, rallying stakeholders across sectors, advocating for systemic change to protect our climate and communities.
