MPs, invited guests encouraged to wear local attire for SONA

MPs, invited guests encouraged to wear local attire for SONA

The Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, has urged Members of Parliament (MPs) and the nearly 2 000 guests attending tomorrow’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) to support local designers.

SONA is an event where President Cyril Ramaphosa provides updates on the government’s programmes and sets the agenda for the new financial year.

But, it is also where some MPs and bigwigs dress to the nines to make a fashion statement.

Parliament has since partnered with Proudly South African to support the local fashion industry under the ’Wear Local at SONA’ initiative, said Mtshweni-Tsipane on Wednesday.

“The campaign aims to elevate the local fashion industry calling on the nation’s leaders to showcase South African designed and manufactured fashion at the SONA,” she said.

In addition, Parliament has partnered with businesses in the agriculture, food, and beverage sectors to support the event.

“Some of these businesses represent the great success of our government in designating South Africa’s products as Geographical Indicators, such as in the case of the Karoo lamb and others.

“We extend our full gratitude and appreciation to all businesses and persons who continue to sponsor this event,” she told the media.

Mtshweni-Tsipane and the National Assembly (NA) Speaker Thoko Didiza were addressing journalists in Cape Town about Parliament’s preparations for the 2025 SONA.

Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa will be ushered by Inako Mateza, a 19-year-old Xhosa praise singer from the Eastern Cape, which aligns with long-standing traditions.

She took a moment to express sincere gratitude to the informal traders for their continued cooperation since Cape Town City Hall became the venue for the SONA after the 2022 fire that damaged the parliamentary complex.

“While we acknowledge that events of this magnitude inevitably cause some inconveniences within the Central Business District, we also recognise the broader economic value that SONA brings to the city.”

As a significant national event, the Chairperson said SONA garners both local and international attention, boosting economic activity through increased tourism, hospitality, and business opportunities.

“As with previous SONAs, alternative arrangements have been made, in collaboration with the City of Cape Town and the Informal Traders Association, to ensure that affected traders can continue operating at designated alternative venues.”

Post-SONA sittings

After tomorrow’s all-important SONA, the NA and the NCOP will reconvene for a joint session on 11 and 12 February 2025 to debate the President’s address.

The President will respond to the debate on February 13, while the Minister of Finance is scheduled to deliver the Budget Speech on 19 February.

“We encourage all South Africans to actively engage with SONA by tuning in and sharing their views across the various communication platforms provided by Parliament, the government, and the media.”

The SONA will be broadcast live across Parliament TV, mainstream broadcasters, and streaming services. – SAnews.gov.za

Durban reinforces its status as a premier holiday destination

Durban reinforces its status as a premier holiday destination

Durban has yet again stamped its status as a premier holiday destination, with the city's tourism profile proving to be of great economic benefit to the local community.

This week, the eThekwini Municipality announced the findings of a socio-economic assessment on the festive season’s impact on the city.

The in-depth report, conducted by BDO South Africa, an independent accounting and consulting firm, highlighted the significant economic benefits generated during the 2024/25 festive season, which spanned from 1 December 2024 to 12 January 2025.

According to the assessment, the 2024/25 festive season resulted in a staggering direct spend of R1.95 billion within eThekwini Municipality, showcasing a strong demand from both domestic and international visitors.

“The total economic contribution to the local economy was an impressive R4.83 billion, illustrating the multiplier effect of the tourism sector. The festive influx also contributed about R360 million in revenue to the government, further highlighting the important role tourism plays in local and national economies,” the municipality said.

The city said this wave of tourism created or sustained approximately 8 716 jobs, offering vital employment opportunities for residents in various sectors, including hospitality, retail, transportation and entertainment.

“The job creation underscores tourism’s role as a crucial pillar of the local economy, providing livelihoods and supporting families,” the municipality said.

Over 800 000 visitors

The festive season has also attracted a total of 875 289 visitors to Durban, including 447 832 domestic overnight visitors, 33 577 foreign overnight visitors, and 393 880-day visitors.

A survey of visitors revealed that 79% perceive Durban as a prime tourist destination.

Visitors participated in various activities, with the top attractions being the city’s breathtaking beaches (73%), local eateries (69%), and shopping experiences (64%).

Notably, 54% of visitors were drawn to uShaka Marine World, highlighting the city’s diverse offerings that cater to all ages and interests.

The economic impact assessment further acknowledged the significant contributions of major events held throughout the city, including Beach Paradise, Fact DBN Rocks, Anywhere In Your City and the uMgababa New Year Picnic, played a substantial role in attracting thousands of attendees, and contributed in driving the local economy during the 2024/25 festive season.

“The festive season saw an average overall occupancy rate of 69%, with hotels reaching 72%, a notable increase from the previous year’s 70%. Peak occupancy rates reached 91% during the Christmas long weekend, illustrating the high demand and the city’s appeal as a festive getaway,” the municipality said.

Looking ahead

The municipality said Durban’s tourism sector continues to demonstrate resilience and growth, with significant opportunities for future development.

The municipality said the insights from the report will guide the city’s strategic initiatives to enhance visitor experiences and maximise economic benefits for communities.

EThekwini Municipality Mayor, Cyril Xaba said the city remains fully committed to working with stakeholders to ensure the continued growth of the tourism sector.

Durban Tourism will also be implementing a series of impactful initiatives designed to accelerate tourism growth.

Employment and Labour to recruit 10 000 inspector interns

Employment and Labour to recruit 10 000 inspector interns

Employment and Labour Minister Nomakhosazana Meth has announced the recruitment of 10 000 inspector interns who will be recruited from end of January.

The Minister was addressing the NEDLAC Annual Labour School taking place at Kievits Kroon, Pretoria.

Noting the inadequate inspectorate capacity of the department, Minister Meth made an announcement of the intention to recruit 20 000 interns to bolster the inspectorate wing of the department so that all corners of the country are covered and ensure that employers are complying with labour legislation.

“I am pleased to announce that the inspector advertisement for the first cohort of 10 000 interns will be published in the Public Service vacancy Circular on 31 January 2025. The remaining 10 000 will then be recruited next year.

“The 20 000 additional labour inspectors will assist us to effectively reinforce the department’s institutional capacity to meet its mandate,” the Minister said.

Minister Meth said the department aims to improve labour law compliance, especially in under-monitored sectors such as domestic work, agriculture, public sector and the informal economy and it looks forward to increased collaboration with unions and employer organisations in so doing.

“Our increased actions should serve as a deterrent toward wrongdoing hence the work of inspection and enforcement services of the department is critical in safeguarding workers' rights, ensuring compliance with labour laws and upholding fair practices.

“This priority speaks directly to the need for enhanced capacity in our labour inspectorate, ensuring that the protections afforded by our laws are implemented on the ground,” she said.

Once more, the Minister highlighted that President Cyril Ramaphosa underscored the necessity of improving compliance rates in the labour market, which are essential to protecting workers and upholding their rights.

While leading the Portfolio of Employment and Labour in the recent months, Meth said she has noted some areas of concern which she is prioritising.

She cited the enforcement drive that the department has engaged in, in the past few months, with an increased drive of ensuring compliance with labour legislation.

“The inspection work has continued to occupy the media space. Yes, we have been topical, and for all the right reasons, making some shockwaves in the hospitality, retail, agricultural sectors- just to mention a few after a relentless spate of coordinated national raids that saw us conducting numerous national high impact coordinated blitz inspections.

“These inspections to ensure that employees are correctly paid; their conditions of employment are as per the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, and where we have found non-compliance, we have enforced the law with all might,” she said. – SAnews.gov.za

Cabinet hopeful G20 hosting will boost local tourism

South Africa is looking forward to a boost in its hospitality sector, as support staff and families of the Group of 20 (G20) member countries are expected to attend over 130 meetings in the Leaders’ Summit next year.

This is according to Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, who briefed the media on the outcomes of the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, 4 December 2024.

On 1 December 2024, South Africa officially assumed the G20 Presidency from Brazil, becoming the first African country to lead the premier forum with the theme of ‘Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability’.

“Hosting the G20 offers our nation an unprecedented opportunity to position South Africa as a global force for driving inclusive economic growth, employment, and reduced inequality in a sustainable manner,” Ntshavheni said.

The members of the G20 are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, the United Kingdom, the United States, the African Union and the European Union.

Ntshavheni said all provinces will benefit from hosting either the Ministerial or Working Group Meetings.

Following Brazil's example, Ntshavheni said South Africa will host the G20 Social Summit to encourage broader involvement of civil society and will introduce a new engagement group called, Township20 (TS20).

The Minister stated that the TS20 will showcase South Africa's township economies' creative, cultural, financial, and innovative strengths.

The initial meetings for South Africa's Presidency will include the first Sherpa and Finance Track meetings, scheduled from 9 to 12 December 2024 in Sandton.

The official website for South Africa's G20 Presidency was launched on Tuesday, featuring the King Protea as its logo. This national flower symbolises the country's identity, landscape, and cultural significance.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO said the King Protea embodies resilience, cultural pride, hope, and natural beauty.

“The King Protea’s ability to regenerate after fires mirrors the country’s spirit of renewal and hope.

“The flower serves as a reminder that even in the darkest times, there is always a chance for new beginnings. Just like the people of South Africa, who have faced historical struggles and triumphs, King Protea stands tall even in adversity,” the department said.

Cabinet has invited potential sponsors to partner with government in supporting the G20 in South Africa.

Interested parties are encouraged to submit their expressions of interest to g20sponsorship@dirco.gov.za. The deadline is 31 March 2025. – SAnews.gov.za

SA- Nigeria conclude successful Bi-National Commission

President Cyril Ramaphosa and his Nigerian counterpart, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, have paid tribute to the existing deep fraternal relations between the two nations.

In a joint communique on the 11th session of the South Africa - Nigeria Bi-National Commission on Tuesday, the two Heads of State and Government once more acknowledged the strong support that Nigeria provided to the liberation movements in South Africa during South Africa’s struggle for freedom and democracy.

President Tinubu was in South Africa for a working visit at the invitation of President Ramaphosa to co-chair the 11th Session of the Bi-National Commission (BNC) between the two countries.

The BNC was preceded by a meeting of Senior Officials on 28 and 29 November 2024 and the Ministers Meeting on 02 December 2024.

The 11th Session of the BNC also marked the 30th anniversary of formal establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

“The two Heads of State and Government renewed their commitment to work closely to broaden and sustain the two nations’ bilateral relationship in a manner that enhances strategic cooperation and partnership for mutual benefit. In this regard, the Heads of State and Government directed the various Ministries, Departments and Agencies to deepen their cooperation in the context of the BNC,” the joint communique read.

The Heads of State and Government acknowledged the more than 34 Agreements covering various sectors which have been signed since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1994.

“The two leaders underscored the need to urgently finalise the MoU [Memorandum of Understanding] on the Early Warning Mechanism. To this end, it was agreed that the MoU will be signed, no later than March 2025, during the visit of the South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation to Nigeria, for Political Consultations.

“The two leaders also welcomed the ongoing negotiations to conclude other new agreements,” the communique said.

Investment

The Heads of State also welcomed the high levels of economic cooperation between the two countries. In this regard, they welcomed the significant investments of South African companies in Nigeria and encouraged corresponding Nigerian investments in the South African economy.

The leaders recognised the need for the two countries to create an enabling business environment in both countries.
“The two leaders agreed to encourage cooperation and partnership between private and public entities for investment in mining, infrastructure development in rail, road, ports, amongst others. In this regard Nigeria invited South Africa’s Development Finance Institutions to partner with Nigeria in co-financing infrastructure projects,” the communique read.

The leaders further made a commitment to work towards increased and balanced trade between the two countries by utilising the opportunities provided by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Both South Africa and Nigeria have ratified the AfCFTA.

Addressing mutual challenges

The two countries also agree to collaborate on programmes that address mutual challenges in food and nutrition security, strengthening meaningful digital connectivity, taking leadership in the development of artificial intelligence, expanding digital literacy initiatives, as well as prioritising data protection and online safety for all citizens.

The two leaders welcomed the convening of the South Africa-Nigeria business roundtable held on the margins of the 11th session of the BNC during which they had an opportunity to address and engage with Chief Executives of companies from both countries.

“The Heads of State and Government also exchanged views on regional, continental and global issues of mutual concern. Nigeria highlighted its efforts and those of ECOWAS [Economic Community of West African States] in fostering and promoting peace and security in West Africa. South Africa also outlined efforts undertaken by the Southern African Development Community [SADC] in supporting peace initiatives in both the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and northern Mozambique”.

The delegations also underscored the need to redouble efforts to realise the African Union (AU) Agenda 2063 Aspiration to “Silence the Guns”.

In this regard, the Heads of State and Government expressed concern at the devastating conflict in Sudan, which has resulted in the loss of lives, destruction of infrastructure and property and a humanitarian crisis.

The Heads of State and Government also reflected on the upcoming elections for the leadership of the African Union Commission and underscored the need for the election of the leadership that would be responsive to the challenges facing the African continent.

International developments

“The two countries further exchanged views on international developments, particularly the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and called for a ceasefire in Gaza and increased access to humanitarian aid.

“The Heads of State and Government reiterated their principled position that the only long-lasting solution to the resolution of the conflict, is to advance a two-State solution where Israel will exist side by side in peace and harmony with a viable and fully independent Palestinian State. Nigeria commended South Africa for taking the case of Israel and Palestine to the International Court of Justice,” the communique read.

Similarly, the Heads of State and Government agreed to intensify support for the cause of Western Sahara for self-determination, freedom, and justice.

Reforms

“The two Heads of State and Government further renewed their call for a responsive international system of governance through a reformed United Nations Security Council, respect for and promotion of universal human rights in a just and equitable world,” the communique said.

South Africa congratulated Nigeria on the re-appointment of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the Director General of the World Trade Organisation. South Africa and Nigeria agreed to work closely together in international organizations.

G20

Meanwhile, Nigeria congratulated South Africa on its assumption of the G20 Presidency from 01 December 2024 and commended South Africa on its priorities which address inclusive economic growth, industrialisation and the reduction of inequality, food security and artificial intelligence, data governance and innovation.

Agenda 2063

The Heads of State and Government further committed to working closely with the African Union and each other to advance the African Agenda in pursuit of the implementation of Agenda 2063.

According to the AU, Agenda 2063 is Africa's development blueprint to achieve inclusive and sustainable socio-economic development over a 50-year period.

G20 Presidency to establish three dedicated task forces

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that South Africa’s G20 Presidency will pursue progress on cross-cutting issues through the establishment of three dedicated task forces.

Speaking during the launch of the G20 Presidency on Tuesday, President Ramaphosa said the first task force is on Inclusive Economic Growth, Industrialisation, Employment and Reduced Inequality.

The second task force is on Food Security, while the third task force is on Artificial Intelligence, Data Governance and Innovation for Sustainable Development.

WATCH |

“It is critical for South Africa that the G20 remains focused on its core responsibilities to address global economic and financial challenges. It should not replace existing international institutions and platforms, such as the United Nations and associated bodies.

“At the same time, G20 initiatives should support, not diminish, the responsibilities that countries have to deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals, climate action and other commitments,” the President said.

To ensure that the G20 remains focused, the President said that South Africa will not create any new working groups or permanent structures.

“We will build on previous presidencies and provide momentum to existing structures and processes. We will reflect on the impact of the G20 over the last 20 years and positioning it to enhance its impact over the next 20-year cycle,” he said.

The President emphasised that it is important for South Africa that its G20 Presidency is inclusive.

“Dialogue with civil society and other non-government institutions will be conducted through various engagement groups. These engagement groups are organised according to sectors, such as business, labour, civil society, parliamentary bodies and the judiciary.

“These engagement groups also include science bodies, think tanks, and audit institutions, as well as institutions of higher learning, specific groups for women and youth including vulnerable groups,” he said.

President Ramaphosa said the nation also intends to support the creation of a new engagement group, Township20 (TS20), to spotlight the potential of South Africa’s township economies.

“This will highlight the creative, cultural, financial and innovative capacities that our own country has to give when it comes to small and medium enterprises as well as cooperatives and how these operate in rural areas as well as townships where our people live,” he said.

Following Brazil’s example, South Africa will host a G20 Social Forum, amplifying the voices of civil society, women, youth and vulnerable groups.

“South Africa firmly believes that civil society serves as a bridge between the G20 leaders and the people who have the greatest interest in their deliberations,” the President affirmed.

Looking ahead to the Leaders’ Summit

The G20 Presidency will culminate in the Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg in November 2025, where world leaders will adopt a declaration outlining collective actions to address critical global challenges.

With over 130 meetings planned across all provinces, and thousands of delegates expected, the G20 Presidency presents an opportunity to showcase South Africa’s potential and hospitality.

“The G20 Presidency is an opportunity to present to the world the great opportunities and experiences that South Africa has to offer. We look forward to welcoming our friends and partners to our beautiful country,” the President said.

South Africa assumed the Presidency of the G20 on 1 December 2024, marking a historic milestone as the first African country to lead this influential group of the world’s largest economies.

This Presidency is not only a significant moment for South Africa but also for the African continent and the Global South, amplifying their voices on the global stage, while advancing shared goals of economic growth, sustainability and equality. – SAnews.gov.za

G20 South Africa website goes live

G20 South Africa website goes live

South Africa’s Group of Twenty (G20) Presidency website is officially live with the national flower- the King Protea – as the logo which reflects the country's identity, landscape, and cultural significance.

This as South Africans are invited to visit www.G20.org for everything they need to know about the country’s G20 Presidency, media events and calendar meetings.

The G20 Presidency website, fully responsive and linking to social media, showcases South Africa's provinces and serves as a resource for G20 information. The website is legally protected under international agreements.

Speaking at the G20 Presidency launch and the chosen logo, the President shared his delight at the fact that the country gets to showcase not only the nation but also one of its most cherished symbols, the Protea cynaroides.

“It is a real joy and pleasure for us as South Africa to launch the work we will undertake as the President of the G20, particularly as we will be showcasing not only our country but also one of the key symbols of our country the Protea cynaroides, which is a scientific name of the Protea which is also called the King Protea.

“It’s a distinctive member of the protea and it is the largest, as it is also known as the giant protea, the honey pot the part I like most and also the King sugar bush and it is widely distributed in our country generally,” the President said on Tuesday.

The President launched South Africa’s G20 Presidency two days after the country assumed the Presidency, marking a historic milestone as the first African country to lead this influential group of the world’s largest economies.

Acting Chief of State Protocol at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), Clayson Monyela, detailed the development of the South African G20 logo with the King Protea, symbolising resilience and hope, as a central element.
The logo incorporates the South African flag's colours and a semi-circular design to represent unity and global collaboration.
Monyela explained that they went through a process to look at what would inform the logo.

He stated that the requirements for developing the logo included ensuring it reflected the country's identity. Additionally, the logo needed to highlight the nation's scenic beauty and its potential as a preferred destination for tourism and investment.
He further emphasised that the logo should represent the country as a thriving democracy and a multicultural, diverse nation.

Pride and identity

It was also essential for the logo to align with the G20 South Africa Presidency theme of “solidarity, equality, and sustainability.”
“Some of the key elements of the South Africa G20 logo include the national flower, the King Protea. The cultural significance of the King Protea, which is the national flower, is that one, it is intertwined with South African culture. Secondly, it's crown like petals evoke pride and identity. It also represents hope and regeneration.

“You would know this that it regenerates after fires, symbolising renewing and hope. It also reflects our country's resilience in overcoming hardships. It is a reminder of growth and new beginnings, even during adversity. Of course, it's a flower, so it's naturally beautiful. It is striking and captures attention and represents the breathtaking South African landscape,” Monyela said.

He added that the logo symbolises South Africa's intention to deliver a positive and solution driven G20 Presidency.

“The other thing you'll notice is that it's semi-circular; the same secular design of our logo symbolises unity, inclusion and global collaboration,” he said.

The G20 Presidency will culminate in the Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg in November 2025, where world leaders will adopt a declaration outlining collective actions to address critical global challenges.

South African Travellers to Take More Holidays in 2025

Location: News
Marriott International, Inc.

  • Research among over 2,000 South African travellers reveals that more than six in 10 plan to take more holidays in 2025.
  • Bravecations and heritage holidays emerge as key travel trends for 2025.
  • Savvy spenders on the rise as travellers seek the best value for their trips.
  • AI usage in holiday planning skyrockets, alongside growing sustainability considerations.

The travel market is set to grow in 2025, according to Marriott Bonvoy's 2025 Ticket to Travel research (http://apo-opa.co/3AQaXQo) (www.Marriott.com). The study, conducted amongst 21,374 adults in 10 markets across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East (EMEA) and more than 2,000 travellers in South Africa, reveals that more than 60% of South Africans plan to take more holidays next year compared to 2024, with 18% maintaining their current travel frequency.

Surveyed South Africans are planning an average of 2.7 domestic holidays, two short-haul holidays (four-hour flight or less), and 1.8 long-haul holidays in 2025. This totals 6.5 holidays or trips, equating to more than one every two months. Among those planning holidays, the top travel destinations are South Africa (27%), USA (11%), Mozambique (10%), France (10%), and Mauritius (10%).

‘Bravecations' and ‘heritage holidays' arise as emerging trends

The research highlights several emerging travel trends. One notable trend is ‘bravecations,' where travellers are more adventurous on holiday, trying activities they wouldn't normally attempt at home. An impressive 85% of South African travellers say they are braver on holiday, the highest among all markets surveyed. This trend is particularly strong among younger travellers, with 87% of 18–24-year-olds and 91% of 25–34-year-olds expressing a willingness to try new and exciting things. Popular activities include climbing high structures (56%), participating in high-octane activities like zip-lining, skydiving or theme park rides (54%), and trying unusual foods (45%).

Another rising trend is ‘heritage holidays,' where travellers explore their family's heritage, history, or ancestry. Seventy-five percent of South Africans have taken or plan to take a heritage holiday soon. This trend is more prevalent among younger generations, with 77% of 18–24-year-olds and 88% of 25–34-year-olds having taken a heritage holiday or plan to, compared to just 42% of those aged 65 and above. Key motivations include the desire to understand where their family comes from and what their life was like (64%) and to see where their ancestors lived (53%).

Solidifying Trends

Sustainability and the use of AI in travel planning are set to become even more significant in 2025. Eight in ten travellers (80%) consider the environmental impact of their travel plans, higher than the EMEA average of 72%. Nearly eight in ten (79%) checked the sustainability of their accommodation on their last holiday, with 64% doing so before booking, far higher than the EMEA average of 30%.

The use of AI in travel planning is also growing rapidly. Nearly half (48%) of South African travellers have used AI to help plan or research a holiday, above the EMEA average of 41%. This trend is led by younger travellers, with 57% of 18–24-year-olds and 63% of 25–34-year-olds using AI in the past year, indicating its mainstream adoption among younger South Africans.

Travel Priorities for 2025

When it comes to choosing accommodation in 2025, the ‘brilliant basics' remain key priorities with cleanliness (97%), location (96%), and customer service (96%) being the most important factors.

South African travellers are family orientated, preferring to holiday with their family or partner's family and children (46%), above just their partner or spouse (36%), and friends (12%). Only five percent prefer to travel alone. Additionally, ‘spending time with friends and family' (63%) is the top priority for holidays, followed by ‘treating themselves' (54%). Over half (52%) say it is important they return feeling healthier than when they left, significantly higher than the EMEA average of 36%.

Savvy Spending

Despite planning more holidays, South Africans are keen on getting the best value for their money. The main factor that would encourage travellers to book a holiday is ‘getting a special price' (62%). Shoulder season breaks—taking vacations during the months surrounding peak season—are another popular way to make holidays more affordable. Seven in ten (70%) have or have considered doing this, with the main reason being to get better value (56%). More than half of South African travellers (46%) always consider exchange rates when planning holidays, but 14% say they ‘never usually do but will in 2025'.

Dorcas Dlamini Mbele, Area Commercial Director, Marriott International – Sub-Saharan Africa, says: “We're witnessing a profound shift towards valuing experiences over material possessions among South African travellers. Trends like bravecations and heritage holidays are at the forefront, reflecting a desire for meaningful and enriching journeys. The integration of AI in travel planning and a strong focus on sustainability further enhance this forward-thinking approach. It's an exciting era for the travel industry, and we're eager to support South Africans as they embark on new adventures and create lasting memories both locally and globally.”

President Ramaphosa to launch South Africa’s G20 Presidency

Location: News

President Ramaphosa to launch South Africa's G20 Presidency

President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Monday brief the media on South Africa’s Group of Twenty (G20) Presidency at the Media Centre, Union Buildings, in Tshwane.

President Ramaphosa officially accepted South Africa’s responsibility for the G20 Presidency for 2025 during the recent G20 Rio Leaders’ Summit in Brazil.

This will be the first time an African economy leads the G20 for a rotational, one-year term.

Brazil held the G20 Presidency during 2024, and South Africa will at the end of its term hand over the G20 Presidency to the United States of America.

The G20 is a forum of the largest economies in the world, who meet regularly to discuss the most pressing issues facing the global economy.

Representing nearly 60% of the global population, 80% of global gross domestic product (GDP), and 75% of global exports, the G20 stands as a vital platform for international economic cooperation and sustainable development.

“Under its G20 Presidency, South Africa seeks to provide strategic direction in establishing a more equitable, representative and fit-for-purpose international order, in-line with the main multilateral processes under the United Nations,” the Presidency said in a statement.

The G20 is expected to have significant economic benefits for South Africa, notably for the tourism, transport, restaurant, entertainment and hospitality industries, with global visibility in all nine provinces.

South Africa will host approximately 130 meetings (both virtual and in-person) from 1 December 2024 - 30 November 2025, across the country, and on the margins of major international conferences and meetings. – SAnews.gov.za

AHIF Heads to Cape Town for the First Time for its 13th Edition

Location: News
The Bench

The Africa Hospitality Investment Forum (AHIF), Africa's premier conference for tourism and hospitality investment, is gearing up for its 2025 edition in Cape Town. Taking place from 17 to 19 June at The Westin Cape Town, AHIF 2025 will introduce an innovative, dynamic format aimed at fostering new partnerships and facilitating deals within Africa's rapidly expanding hospitality sector - one of the world's fastest-growing markets.

Cape Town, known for its stunning landscapes and vibrant visitor economy, provides the perfect backdrop for AHIF's annual gathering. Moreover, the South African hospitality industry is projected to grow from USD 1.36 billion in 2024 to USD 1.68 billion by 2029, driven by increasing traveller numbers and a resurgence post-COVID-19.

Matthew Weihs, Managing Director of The Bench, the organiser of AHIF, commented: “We are excited to bring AHIF to Cape Town, a city that embodies the energy and potential of African hospitality. This year's event will offer invaluable opportunities for delegates to connect with top decision-makers, explore new partnerships, and gain insights from industry leaders. AHIF is where the future of African hospitality is shaped. By offering delegates the chance to explore Cape Town, we are adding a unique layer of value to their participation. The connections made and the insights gained from these hands-on experiences will be invaluable as we work together to drive investment and development across Africa.”

The new format, which is focused on networking and tailored insights, has been carefully designed to go beyond the conference rooms, introducing country pavilions from across Africa to showcase the latest opportunities in the region to investors. The advantages of the new format include personalised itineraries, hands-on workshops, roundtables, enhanced networking, and insights on economic trends. Focused on C-level hospitality and tourism investment decision-makers, AHIF continues to be exclusively focused on those who are shaping the future of hospitality in Africa.

Daniel Silke, political economist, emphasised the potential impact of AHIF: “The Africa Hospitality Investment Forum is taken seriously as an industry-leading event globally. It addresses one of the most intriguing and exciting markets, Africa, where growth rates remain high, and demographic shifts, urbanisation, and an increase in air connectivity are driving substantial interest from hotel groups. AHIF stands out not just for the expert speakers and deep insights, but also for fostering personal connections that are invaluable in this dynamic industry.”

With opportunities growing at an unprecedented rate, AHIF is more than a meeting; it's a catalyst for action, insight, and strategic partnerships that are shaping the continent's hospitality future.

KZN commits to economic development, investment growth toward 2030

Location: News

KZN commits to economic development, investment growth toward 2030

KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Thamsanqa Ntuli, has underscored the commitment to economic development, trade, and investment growth toward 2030, aligned with the province's broader strategic priorities.

Ntuli reiterated the province’s commitment during the KwaZulu-Natal Trade and Investment Conference currently underway at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban.

The two-day conference, which started on Monday, aims to promote, brand, and market KwaZulu-Natal as an investment destination, identify and develop investment opportunities, among others.

The conference brings together investors, government leaders, and industry captains to explore and amplify the province’s status as a top investment destination.

Delivering his keynote address on Monday, Ntuli highlighted that over the past decade, KwaZulu-Natal has attracted significant investments in key sectors, especially through developments at the Durban and Richards Bay Ports, two of Africa’s largest and busiest maritime hubs.

“Enhanced container capacity, automation, and infrastructure upgrades have strengthened KZN’s position as a regional logistics powerhouse. Similarly, the Dube Trade Port, adjacent to King Shaka International Airport, has drawn over R2 billion in investments, cementing its role in warehousing, logistics, and agriculture, including the Dube AgriZone, a major hub for export-focused agri-business,” Ntuli said.

Reflecting on the 2019 Provincial Trade and Investment Strategy’s achievements and areas for intensified effort, Ntuli said the strategy targeted R76 billion in new and expansionary investments by 2024. This is alongside the creation of approximately 68 000 jobs and an increase in the province’s national export value to R1.28 trillion.

While projections indicate that the targets may not be fully met by the year’s end, the Premier emphasised the need to redouble efforts in investment initiatives.

“The Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (RBIDZ) has fuelled growth in heavy industry and energy, particularly in metals like aluminium and steel, generating jobs and boosting export potential.

“Renewable energy investments, particularly in biomass and solar, have diversified KZN’s energy landscape, with biofuel production from the sugarcane industry enhancing the province’s green economy credentials.”

Growth in the agricultural sector

The Premier also highlighted the province’s strong agricultural sector, which has attracted investments in agro-processing, and supporting industries including sugar refining, dairy processing, and timber.

The Premier said this growth is further supported by a thriving food and beverage industry, pharmaceutical, and packaging sectors, benefiting from proximity to key ports and an expanding consumer base.

Tourism

He said tourism also remains central to KZN’s economy, supported by new hospitality investments, including the reopening of the international Hilton Hotel and the Durban Beach promenade renewal.

Noting KZN’s absence from many long-haul tourist packages, Premier Ntuli stressed the importance of positioning the province as a key destination for international tourism.

Ntuli highlighted several strategic assets crucial to the province’s competitive advantage, and these include expanded port capacities, Special Economic Zones (SEZs) like Richards Bay and Dube TradePort, and streamlined regulatory and tax incentives to attract foreign and local investments.

The Premier urged stakeholders to seize the opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which offers KZN unprecedented access to a $3.4 trillion market.

Partnerships

The Premier also addressed issues in freight rail services and port bottlenecks, emphasising that public-private partnerships could unlock efficiencies.

He further called attention to KZN’s role in automotive manufacturing, underscoring opportunities in electric vehicle (EV) component production to tap into Africa’s growing EV market.

“Sustainable growth initiatives, including green hydrogen, biomass, and digital innovation, are essential for positioning KZN as a leader in the renewable and digital economies. Collaboration with local universities and technology firms is building a skilled workforce to support industries like IT, finance, and business outsourcing, further enhancing KZN’s role as a technology and logistics hub,” Ntuli said.

The Premier emphasised the importance of resilient infrastructure, including sustainable energy investments, and inclusive growth that extends to all municipalities, cities, and rural areas.

He issued a call to action for deeper engagement with rural and municipal stakeholders, ensuring these areas are active participants and beneficiaries in KZN’s economic growth. – SAnews.gov.za

100 days in office: Labour Minister focuses on job creation, improved services

100 days in office: Labour Minister focuses on job creation, improved services

Employment and Labour Minister Nomakhosazana Meth says her first 100 days in office signify not an "endpoint" but rather the beginning of numerous initiatives aimed at better serving clients and the country as a whole.

In addition, Meth said her department was consumed by fulfilling the mandate of job creation and protection of vulnerable workers.

The Minister was speaking at the Cape Town Labour Centre, where she was unpacking the first 100 days in office following the establishment of the Government of National Unity (GNU).

“We are seized with the mammoth task of changing the trajectory of our economy into one that resonates with the resolve of the GNU to nudge actions that will advance the three priorities.”

These, she said, include driving inclusive economic growth and job creation, reducing poverty and tackling the high cost of living, and building a capable, ethical and developmental State.

Meth said they hit the ground running with the Deputy Ministers getting acquainted with the department, and strengthening cooperation with organised labour, organised business, social partners and civil society.

The leaders have also been participating in parliamentary processes, and ensuring accountability to the Portfolio Committee, Cabinet and Cluster Committee meetings.

The last three months have also been characterised by the Strategic Plan 2025/2030 of the department, which sets out the GNU strategic priorities and principles espoused by the statement of intent of the GNU.

Inspections and enforcement activities

Meth took the time to delve into the role of inspection and enforcement, saying these were critical to safeguarding workers' rights, ensuring compliance with labour laws and upholding fair practices.

According to the Minister, the department has jointly conducted more successful inspections, leading to 81 arrests of employers and undocumented immigrants.

The high-impact inspections and compliance raids targeted the hospitality, road and freight, textile, car manufacturing, and farming sectors, as these have high non-compliance with labour laws.

“During these inspections, we addressed non-standard employment practices that render workers vulnerable. We contributed to job preservation by ensuring that employed individuals enjoy the protection of their rights, which in turn enhances productivity and economic growth,” Meth said.

She announced that 17 662 national inspections were conducted during this period.

Out of the 17 662 inspections, 12 195 workplaces were compliant, while 5 494 workplaces were found to be non-compliant, with enforcement notices issued as a result.

TERS budget

Meth said during this period, there was an increase in the budget for the Temporary Employer-Employee Relief Scheme (TERS), from R400 million to R2.4 billion for the current financial year.

“This significant boost aims to shelter companies in distress and prevent employee layoffs amid unstable economic conditions.”

Meth was of the view that the increase in the TERS budget was a proactive response to volatile economic trends that threaten the livelihoods of impoverished workers and the sustainability of businesses.

“Our goal is to preserve jobs and support companies facing financial difficulties. Furthermore, increasing the scheme's capacity aims to reduce the risk of further retrenchments and support economic stability.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, R65 billion was made available for TERS.

Meanwhile, Meth said Phase 3 of the “Follow the Money” project started in October 2024.
The project aims to verify the payment of R65 billion to 215 companies under the COVID-19 relief scheme.

To date, Meth said the project has recovered R1.2 billion since inception.

“Initially, the aim was to verify 50% of the amount paid, and now we want to verify the entire amount. Consequently, 27 audit firms have been appointed, and Phase 3 commenced in October 2024."

Ninety-six fraud cases were identified, 40 were presented to the court, and all were finalised. The highest conviction was 20 years of direct imprisonment. – SAnews.gov.za

Cabinet commends labour law compliance operations

Cabinet has commended intensified joint inspection efforts, led by the Department of Employment and Labour (DEL), to ensure that employers comply with recruitment requirements.

“Since the beginning of the seventh administration, the Department of Employment and  Labour has issued fines worth more than R10 million to errant employers within the hospitality industry, who continue to employ undocumented immigrants,” Minister in The Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, said on Thursday during a media briefing in Pretoria.

These inspections are similar to those being conducted in the trucking industry to ensure that employers uphold the provisions of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, 1997 (Act 75 of 1997).

"The inspections also revealed instances of non-compliance to labour laws, including the underpayment of wages, unlawful deductions, and inadequate health and safety measures in the workplace," the Minister said.

Furthermore, Cabinet welcomed the increase in the budget for the Temporary Employer-Employee Relief Scheme (TERS) from R400 million to R2.4 billion in the current financial year.

“The increase is part of government’s proactive response to help preserve jobs by assisting companies that find themselves in financial distress due to difficult economic conditions and thereby minimise retrenchments,” Ntshavheni said. - SAnews.gov.za

Massive budget increase for TERS

Massive budget increase for TERS

In a bid to cushion companies in distress and prevent job losses, the Department of Employment and Labour has significantly increased its Temporary Employer-Employee Relief Scheme (TERS) budget from R400 million to R2.4 billion for the current financial year.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the department said this significant boost aims to assist companies in distress and prevent employee layoffs amid unstable economic conditions, as revealed by Employment and Labour Minister Nomakhosazana Meth.

TERS is an intervention by the department that provides financial assistance to companies in distress for up to 12 months. The scheme enables employers to retain employees by covering their salaries while the company focuses on implementing a turnaround strategy to remain operational.

During this period, employers are only required to cover employee social costs such as provident fund and medical aid contributions.

Productivity SA, an entity under the department, offers turnaround strategy solutions to companies in distress.

Minister Meth urged companies experiencing financial challenges to participate in the scheme as soon as they notice signs of distress.

"The nature and degree of distress will be objectively measured through indicators including but not limited to a decline in revenue. The application process for TERS begins at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) and is entirely free of charge. There are no application, initiation, or administration fees required," said Meth.

A single adjudication committee administered by the CCMA evaluates all TERS applications for eligibility using a combination of indicators.

Rationale for the budget increase

The expanded budget comes in response to the country’s ongoing economic challenges, which have resulted in significant job losses across various sectors.

Recent reports from the CCMA reveal that while 14 887 jobs were saved through interventions during the 2023/2024 financial year, over 22 500 employees were still retrenched.

The number of job losses, particularly in key industries, necessitated an adjustment in the budget to enhance TERS.

“The increase in the TERS budget is a proactive response to volatile economic trends that threaten the livelihoods of impoverished workers and the sustainability of businesses. Our goal is to preserve jobs and support companies facing financial difficulties.

“Furthermore, the increase in the scheme's capacity, aims to reduce the risk of further retrenchments and support economic stability,” Meth said.

The highest number of job losses were recorded in the following sectors:
• Mining: 5 153 job losses.
• Manufacturing: 2 125 job losses.
• Telecommunications: 1 680 job losses.

Since its inception, TERS has been instrumental in supporting a wide range of industries severely impacted by economic challenges.

The following sectors have notably benefited from the scheme:
• Hospitality and tourism: hotels, restaurants, and travel agencies affected by decreased tourism.
• Manufacturing: factories experiencing reduced demand and supply chain disruptions.
• Retail: non-essential retail businesses facing reduced consumer spending.
• Transportation: bus services, and logistics companies dealing with decreased operations.

TERS has facilitated the retention of hundreds of thousands of jobs by providing salary support to employees who might otherwise have been laid off. It continues to play a significant role in stabilising the economy during turbulent times, ensuring a quicker path to recovery by alleviating the financial burden on companies.

Application requirements

Employers seeking to participate in the TERS scheme will be required to provide documentary evidence for evaluation:
• Audited Annual Financial Statements for the past two financial years.
• Independently Reviewed Annual Financial Statements for companies not legally required to be audited, covering the past two financial years.
• Independently Reviewed Management Accounts with comparative figures if the latest financial statements are older than three months.
• Termination of Contract and Bank Statement for individual applicants.
• Business Case outlining the triggers for distress and proposed remedial actions.

With the expanded budget, the department said it hopes that more businesses will participate in the scheme, preventing further job losses and helping to build resilience within South Africa's economic landscape. - SAnews.gov.za

Employment and Labour blitz inspections and raids yield results

Employment and Labour blitz inspections and raids yield results

The Department of Employment and Labour’s joint blitz inspections and raids have yielded significant results, with the department enforcing monetary corrections totalling over R10 million and arresting 81 non-documented workers.

The Minister of Employment and Labour, Nomakhosazana Meth, held a media briefing today to update on the department’s joint blitz inspections and compliance raids.

WATCH |

In a decisive move to uphold employment standards, Meth announced that since assuming office in July 2024, her department has ramped up nationwide inspections targeting non-compliant employers.

Collaborating with the Department of Home Affairs, the Bargaining Council of the Hospitality Sector and law enforcement, the high impact blitz inspections focus on ensuring that workplaces adhere to key labour laws and safeguard workers’ rights.

“Our inspections have revealed instances of non-compliance, including underpayment of wages, unlawful deductions, and inadequate health and safety measures. To date, we have enforced monetary corrections totalling over R10 million, compelling employers to rectify these violations and honour their obligations to their employees,” the Minister said.

Meth emphasised that the department approaches enforcement with a balance of firmness and fairness.

“Employers found in violation are issued compliance orders with clear deadlines for corrective action. In situations where immediate risks to health and safety are identified, Prohibition Notices are issued to halt hazardous activities until compliance is achieved,” she said.

The Minister said the scale and scope of these inspections demonstrate the department’s commitment to upholding labour standards nationwide.

The Western Cape led with the highest number of inspections, totalling 809. Gauteng followed with 764 inspections, and KwaZulu-Natal with 535. Inspections were also carried out in the North West (217), Eastern Cape (82), Free State (69) and Mpumalanga (59).

These joint inspections targeted key sectors and regions, with significant activity in the Western Cape, Gauteng, and KwaZulu-Natal.

These joint operations scrutinised compliance with laws, including the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, National Minimum Wage Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA), Unemployment Insurance Act (UIA), Employment Services Act, and promoting fairness and protecting workers.

Infractions such as underpayment of wages, illegal deductions, and unsafe working conditions were identified.

Tackling unemployment and undocumented workers

Meth expressed concern over South Africa’s unemployment rate of 33.5%, particularly among the youth.

"Concurrently, the widespread employment of undocumented foreign nationals raises concerns over exploitation and the circumvention of legal hiring practices.

“Our administration is committed to addressing these challenges comprehensively and humanely. We are collaborating closely with the Department of Home Affairs to ensure that employment practices comply with immigration laws, and that all workers, regardless of their origin, are treated with dignity and fairness,” Meth said.

Strengthening oversight and enforcement

Looking ahead, Meth revealed plans to expand the Department of Labour’s inspectorate capacity from 2 000 to 20 000 inspectors over the next three years.

This will enhance the department’s ability to conduct more frequent and thorough inspections across the country.

The introduction of risk-based profiling will allow for targeted audits, prioritising industries and regions where violations are most prevalent.

“To maximise the effectiveness of our inspections, we will implement a risk profiling system. This approach will allow us to prioritise audits and inspections based on identified risks, thereby improving our capacity to address high-priority non-compliance areas more efficiently,” the Minister said.

The department will also introduce a specialised segment-focused compliance framework.

“Our enforcement strategy will be integrated and risk-based, enabling us to address all compliance issues at the workplace in a holistic and comprehensive manner, ensuring that all regulatory requirements are met.

“Our commitment extends beyond enforcement; it is about fostering social justice and ensuring that every worker's rights are protected.

“Fair labour practices lead to increased morale, productivity and ultimately, a more robust economy. Together, we can build a society where economic prosperity and social equity reinforce each other,” Minister Meth said.

Supporting businesses: TERS, Productivity SA and the CCMA

In addition to enforcement, the Department of Employment and Labour is extending support to businesses by offering a range of services, fostering resilience, and ensuring harmonious labour relations.

Initiatives like the Temporary Employer/Employee Relief Scheme (TERS) and free productivity services from Productivity SA aim to help businesses in financial distress and improve their operational efficiency.

The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration (CCMA) also offers mediation services to resolve workplace disputes.

Operation Yazini: Raising Public Awareness

As part of Meth’s 100-day programme, Operation Yazini will be launched to raise awareness about the department’s services, including employment rights and compliance assistance.

This initiative aims to bring the department closer to communities, ensuring that employers and employees alike understand their legal obligations and rights.

“Through targeted advocacy and outreach, Operation Yazini seeks to inform the public about the wide range of support available, including labour rights, employment services, and compliance assistance,” the Minister said.

A call for collective action

Meth called for nationwide collaboration between employers, unions and civil society to create a fair and safe labour market.

“I urge all stakeholders, businesses, labour unions, civil society organisations, and fellow citizens to join us in this vital endeavour. Let us work collaboratively to create a labour market characterised by fairness, safety, and mutual respect,” the Minister said.

As inspections continue, the department remains committed to transparency, social justice, and the protection of workers’ rights across South Africa. – SAnews.gov.za

Funding Agencies Brief Committee About Tourism Business Development Programmes

Republic of South Africa: The Parliament

The Portfolio Committee on Tourism today met with the National Empowerment Fund (NEF) and the Small Enterprise Finance Agency (SEFA) to discuss the different tourism development programmes the two entities are implementing on behalf of the Department of Tourism.

The NEF gave an update on the Transformation Fund, a funding initiative targeting tourism businesses in previously disadvantaged communities. The entity's Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr Mzwamadoda Dayimani, explained that the partnership and co-funding arrangement between NEF and the department applies to all transactions supported under the programme.

“The department funds through a grant, limited to R5 million per transaction and if a transaction value is more than R10 million, the NEF funds the excess. The NEF portion is funded through a repayable loan,” Mr Dayimani said.

A number of the projects supported through this Fund are still in the development stage and servicing their loans. After paying off the loans, the projects are expected to be self-sustainable and create more jobs. The funding also comes with post-investment support to ensure they meet their financial targets and repay the loans.

SEFA Acting CEO, Mr Nkosikhona Mbatha, presented a progress report on the Tourism Equity Fund (TEF) to the committee. This Fund seeks to increase growth and transformation and stimulate more inclusive participation in the tourism sector in line with the Tourism BBBEE Sector Codes. It also addresses funding challenges faced by enterprises in the tourism sector.

TEF's core funding activities focus on accommodation, hospitality and related services, travel and related services, and tourism-related products that support the development of the tourism sector in South Africa.

The committee Chairperson, Ms Lungi Mnganga-Gcabashe, said the department should provide additional funding for the programme to accommodate increasing demand, implement awareness programmes, and strengthen post-funding support to ensure the funded projects are sustainable.

“NEF must also increase its own funding because it is clear that there is a demand for this support and should consider stretching the repayment period because tourism projects take long to break even,” said the Chairperson.

Commenting on the SEFA presentation, Ms Mnganga-Gcabashe, said the entity should expedite processing applications for funding as there seems to be slow progress.
She also advised the two agencies and the department to consider the quality of jobs created through these programmes versus the quantity of menial jobs.

“We also need to ensure equitable geographical share of the programmes. Instead of approving projects in more developed areas, we must spread to previously disadvantaged communities,” she said.
