Nelson Mandela Bay kicks off service delivery campaign

Nelson Mandela Bay kicks off service delivery campaign

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Mayor, Babalwa Lobishe, has kicked off a service delivery resuscitation campaign, which aims to ensure all metro communities receive the services they need.

Aligned with the municipality’s 100-day priorities, the campaign named “Siyasebenza Campaign: A Metro at Work”, focuses on accelerating service delivery and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

Through the Siyasebenza Campaign, Lobishe is calling on local communities, businesses, and non-governmental organisations to collaborate with the municipality to improve service delivery across the metro.

The inclusive campaign, which was rolled out in Kariega this week, will address immediate concerns, including illegal dumping, street cleaning, grass cutting, pothole repairs, fixing streetlights, and upgrading public spaces.

The campaign aims to deliver visible results, while also committing to long-term interventions to ensure sustainable service delivery improvements.

During the launch of the campaign, teams including Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMCs), and senior officials, were deployed in various groups to cover areas across Kariega and Dispatch.

The teams attended to different service delivery challenges, including blocked sanitation infrastructure, water leaks, flooding, electricity cable theft, and general vandalism.

Speaking to residents in the affected areas that were identified by ward councillors, Lobishe said the municipality was closely monitoring the service delivery challenges faced by the communities and was working to address them.

For longer-term challenges, she said the municipality was developing sustainable solutions.

The Mayor said they were targeting wards in Kariega that were predominantly affected by the floods last year.

“We must, however, express our extreme concern and disappointment at the high levels of vandalism, currently being experienced in Kariega. We call on our people, and law enforcement to work together with us in apprehending these destructive culprits.

“Vandalism of infrastructure slows down service delivery as money meant for other community needs may be redirected to fix infrastructure that has been intentionally damaged by criminals. This does not only negatively affect our financially constrained municipality but prevents the community from enjoying services they so desperately need,” Lobishe said.

Infrastructure and Engineering Acting Executive Director, Joseph Tsatsire, affirmed the municipality’s commitment to accelerating service delivery.

"We shall be mobilising resources to accelerate the pace of service delivery, more especially in the areas identified under this campaign. Our teams are already at work, dealing with issues ranging from sanitation, water leaks and replacing vandalised infrastructure,” Tsatsire said. – SAnews.gov.za

Groblersbridge Port of Entry resumes operations after flooding

Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), Dr Michael Masiapato, and the South African Revenue Services (SARS) on Thursday announced the resumption of operations at the Groblersbridge Port of Entry with Botswana.

This follows the temporary suspension of operations caused by severe flooding.

However, the port is now fully operational and ready to facilitate the movement of goods and people.

The flooding, which resulted from inclement weather earlier this month, necessitated the temporary suspension of services to allow for comprehensive safety assessments of the infrastructure and restoration of flooded facilities.

“The safety of all port users remains our top priority. We appreciate the patience and cooperation of the public and transport operators during this challenging period,” said Commissioner Masiapato, commending the response by BMA, SARS, Groblerbridge Port Management officials, border stakeholders as well as the Botswana government.

Masiapato said the swift restoration of operations demonstrates commitment to ensure minimal disruption to trade and travel. – SAnews.gov.za

Suspect linked to 2021 unrest appears in court

A 42-year-old suspect is expected to appear at the Durban Magistrate Court today on charges linked to the unrest of July 2021.

The suspect handed herself over at the Durban Central police station this morning, and was arrested and processed.

She faces charges under the Protection of Constitutional Democracy against Terrorist and Related Activities Act (POCDATARA), and incitement to commit violence.

The arrest is as a result of a thorough investigation by the Durban Crimes against the State Unit of the Serious Organised Crime Investigation, following the unrest of July 2021, which affected KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

To date, 69 arrests and one conviction have been secured.

During the unrest, around 350 people lost their lives. The violence and destruction also caused damage to infrastructure and businesses, costing South Africa’s economy some R50 billion, with a further two million jobs being lost or affected.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) report into the unrest, which was released in January 2024, found that a myriad factors contributed to the outbreak of destruction and violence during the riots.

According to the SAHRC, evidence indicated that the acts of destruction during the unrest were well-orchestrated, including the blocking of the N3 highway, destruction of factories and warehouses, attack on government communication facilities, and bombing and theft of ATMs.

KwaZulu-Natal's development aspirations are taking centre stage at Africa's Biggest Property Management Conference, which is underway at Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban.

The two-day conference, which concludes today, brings firmly into focus the importance of creating resilient and sustainable infrastructure that aligns with the province’s development goals, says KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli.

Hundreds of property industry experts and stakeholders, including property developers, investors, government representatives and infrastructure specialists - all united in their commitment to advancing KwaZulu-Natal’s real estate sector and boosting economic growth - have converged at the Durban Chief Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre.

The gathering -- launched by the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government, in partnership with the National and Provincial Departments of Public Works and Infrastructure, and eThekwini Municipality -- is being held under the theme: 'Build KZN Better'.

The conference aims to foster collaboration, share cutting-edge insights, and explore innovative solutions in property management.

Ntuli said the provincial government aims to build KwaZulu-Natal back stronger than ever before.

“By mobilising experts and stakeholders in the property sector, we can collectively revitalise our urban and rural landscapes, stimulate investment, and generate opportunities for all,” Ntuli said.

Delegates have used the conference to discuss best practices in land use, construction, and property management, while addressing challenges including climate resilience, affordable housing, and inclusive development.

The conference is expected to come up with actionable strategies and partnerships designed to drive long-term growth throughout KwaZulu-Natal and beyond.

As part of plans to turn eThekwini around, the Presidential eThekwini Working Group (PeWG) has been working hard to rebuild the city, as well as reposition it as an investment and tourism attraction.

Since its establishment in April 2024, the PeWG has recorded significant developments in service delivery, business confidence, addressing infrastructure and socio-economic challenges.

According to the PeWG's progress report, business confidence in the city increased from 38.42% in the first quarter of 2024 to 63.01% in the third quarter of the same year.

To respond to the challenges of the municipality, President Cyril Ramaphosa established the eThekwini Presidential Working Group in April 2024. The PeWG was established to accelerate support from national and provincial government to rebuild the municipality following a number of challenges confronting the metro. - SAnews.gov.za

Revisiting the Africa-Paris Declaration: Progress, Challenges and the Road Ahead for African Energy

Location: News
Energy Capital & Power

The Africa-Paris Declaration, forged during the 2024 Invest in African Energy (IAE) Forum in Paris, was a pivotal moment in Africa's quest for sustainable energy solutions. Aimed at strengthening the continent's energy transition while addressing the urgent issue of energy poverty, the declaration set ambitious targets for expanding access to clean, affordable and reliable energy. With the 2025 edition of the forum approaching, now is the time to reflect on the progress made since the Africa-Paris Declaration and assess how these initiatives are shaping Africa's energy future.

Increased Engagement in Africa

In the months following the declaration, international investors, development banks and private equity firms have shown a steadfast interest in the African energy market. A key milestone was the launch of the Africa Energy Bank by the African Export-Import Bank and APPO, marking the creation of a first-of-its-kind institution designed to fund and facilitate energy initiatives across the continent. Several final investment decisions were successfully closed, including Shell's $5.5 billion Bonga North deepwater project. Additionally, strategic partnerships, including new PSCs signed by Panoro Energy in Equatorial Guinea and BW Energy in Gabon, highlight how international collaborations are accelerating energy development and creating new opportunities for exploration and production. This increased engagement is key to addressing the financing gap that has long hindered the growth of Africa's energy sector.

Natural gas continues to play a central role in Africa's energy strategy as a transitional fuel. The Africa-Paris Declaration underscored its importance as a bridge between traditional energy sources and renewable energy. Over the past year, significant strides have been made in natural gas exploration and LNG exports. Notable developments include Senegal's Greater Tortue Ahmeyim LNG reaching its first gas production, the Republic of Congo's first LNG exports to Italy from the Congo LNG project, Nigeria's UTM FLNG receiving its construction license, and Angola's Sanha Lean Gas Connection project achieving first gas, among others. These initiatives are not only crucial for advancing Africa's energy transition, but also serve as powerful drivers of economic growth by creating jobs and advancing infrastructure development.

Meanwhile, countries like South Africa, Egypt and Morocco are at the forefront of wind and solar energy development, with momentum expected to build as they meet renewable energy targets and explore new growth opportunities. These investments are driving a shift toward cleaner, more sustainable energy in Africa, though challenges remain. High costs of renewable technologies and insufficient grid infrastructure continue to hinder expansion, underscoring the need for more investment in off-grid and mini-grid solutions.

Investment Gaps Persist

Despite these advancements, Africa still faces significant investment challenges. The financing gap for large-scale energy projects remains substantial and while the private sector has become more engaged, many projects still struggle to secure the necessary capital. In particular, the cost of financing remains high due to the perceived risks associated with energy investments in Africa. This is where continued efforts to de-risk investments and foster public-private partnerships are critical to unlocking the continent's full energy potential. Institutional capacity continues to be a challenge for many African countries. While progress has been made in improving regulatory frameworks, there is still a need for clearer policies, streamlined permitting processes and better enforcement of regulations. Governments must continue to strengthen their institutions to effectively implement energy projects and create an enabling environment for both local and international investors.

With the IAE 2025 forum just months away, industry stakeholders have an opportunity to reflect on the progress made since the Africa-Paris Declaration and determine next steps for the continent's energy future. The forum serves as a platform for government officials, industry leaders and financial institutions to renew commitments, share success stories and address ongoing challenges. While the road to universal energy access and a sustainable energy future is long, the declaration has set the framework for a collective effort that can lead to meaningful change. With the right investments, regulatory frameworks and political will, Africa can emerge as a global leader in energy innovation and sustainability.

Oshoek border resumes operations

Traveller and cargo operations at the Oshoek Port of Entry, the main border post between South Africa and Eswatini, have resumed.

This was announced by the Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), Dr Michael Masiapato and the South African Revenue Service (SARS) on Tuesday.

This follows the successful clearance and safety assessment of the port after a serious truck accident on Sunday.

The accident, caused by a 32-ton coal truck that allegedly experienced brake failure, resulted in significant damage to port infrastructure and multiple vehicles that were at the port.

"We are grateful to confirm that the three individuals injured during the incident -- a SARS official, a tourism monitor and the truck driver -- received prompt medical attention and are recovering well.

“All port operations have resumed with immediate effect, allowing for the seamless movement of travelers and goods between South Africa and Eswatini," Masiapato said.

The BMA and SARS extend their gratitude to all stakeholders, including the South African Police Service, South African National Defence Force, Eswatini Emergency Medical Services and Disaster Management authorities, for their swift response and cooperation.

“We also appreciate the patience and understanding of travellers and trade partners during the temporary disruption,” Masiapato said. – SAnews.gov.za

BMA suspends operations at Oshoek Port of Entry

The Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), Dr Michael Masiapato, and the South African Revenue Services (SARS) on Sunday temporarily suspended operations at the Oshoek Port of Entry with Eswatini, following a serious truck accident.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:20 when the truck, allegedly experiencing brake failure, descended towards Eswatini on the departure side of the port.

The truck crashed into 10 stationery private vehicles, four SARS vehicles, and one SANDF bakkie, causing extensive damage.

Three individuals - one SARS official, one tourism monitor and the driver of the truck - sustained injuries during the incident. All injured individuals were promptly attended to by Eswatini Emergency Medical Services and transported to a hospital in Eswatini for immediate medical treatment.

Port infrastructure - two guardhouses and an inspection shelter - were severely damaged.

"As a precautionary measure, all operations at Oshoek Port of Entry have been temporarily suspended to allow for investigations by SAPS and collection of evidence and photographs from the scene.

“Pending the safety assessments by disaster management teams, the operations at the port will continue to be suspended until the necessary clearance has been issued to ensure the safety of all stakeholders," Masiapato said.

Travelers and transporters of cargo are advised to use the following Ports of Entry with Eswatini, Nerston Port of Entry, Mahamba Port of Entry, Jeppes Reef Port of Entry as well as the Lebombo Port of Entry with Mozambique.

The BMA, in collaboration with SARS and other relevant stakeholders, has wished the injured colleagues a speedy recovery and are working hard to ensure resumption of services.

South Africa outlines G20 Presidency plans at WEF

South Africa outlines G20 Presidency plans at WEF

As the world convened in Davos for the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting recently, South Africa presented its vision for the G20 Presidency this year – outlining a path towards a more equitable and sustainable future.

This is according to President Cyril Ramaphosa who addressed the country through his weekly Presidential newsletter on Monday.

South Africa’s theme for the Group of Twenty (G20) Presidency is Solidary, Equality, Sustainable Development.

“We made the point that it is in the interests of all countries, large and small, wealthy and poor, to reduce global inequality. That is why one of our priorities is ensuring debt sustainability for low-income countries. By freeing up funds for debt relief in these countries, they will be in a better position to invest in infrastructure, industrial development, education, health care and other forms of development.

“Another focus area, which both reduces poverty and promotes sustainability, is the mobilisation of finance for a just energy transition. Through this, developing economy countries will be able to pursue a low-carbon development path while protecting the interests of affected workers, businesses and communities,” the President said.

Related to this, the President spoke of the “mobilisation of special financing and insurance to enable vulnerable countries to rebuild after being struck by natural disasters” and harnessing critical minerals “to promote inclusive growth and development”.

He emphasised, however, that in order for sustainable growth to be achieved, countries must work together.

“We stressed that our themes and priorities are underpinned by the principle of cooperation. Throughout history, human progress has been possible only through collaboration among peoples and countries.

“We therefore renewed our call for the resolution of global challenges through multilateral actions. We called for inclusive solutions that recognise that the world is more interconnected than ever before,” he said.

Pressing further, the President emphasised that the current world climate shows that “no country can go it alone”.

“No country can sustain its growth, stability and development without working together with other countries to overcome common problems,” he said.

Positive sentiment

President Ramaphosa revealed that South Africa’s message at WEF “resonated with the participants in Davos”.
“It was a sentiment shared by many of the business leaders with whom we interacted, as well as with other heads of state and multilateral institutions.

“Many of the people we spoke to endorsed South Africa’s G20 priorities. They saw the value of our focus on Africa and the interests of countries with developing economies. They appreciated the importance of reducing inequality within and between countries and the need for new growth paths that are climate-friendly sustainable,” he said.

READ | President Ramaphosa outlines SA's G20 Presidency priorities at WEF

Furthermore, there was a much-improved sentiment towards “South Africa and the prospects for our economy in the years ahead”.

“They commented on the successful transition from the 6th to the 7th administrations and the formation of the Government of National Unity. They saw this as a sign of stability and a common commitment among parties to inclusive growth, employment and a capable state.

“They welcomed the far-reaching reforms that are underway in areas such as energy, logistics, telecommunications and water to grow and transform our economy.

“The South African delegation left Davos with a sense that there are many leaders in the world that share our vision of an inclusive, just and equal world. And that they are prepared and willing to work with us through our G20 Presidency towards the achievement of such a world,” President Ramaphosa concluded.

DPWI welcomes signing in to law of the Expropriation Bill

Public Works and Infrastructure Deputy Minister Sihle Zikalala has welcomed the signing into law of the Expropriation Bill by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday.

The Deputy Minister has described it as seminal and ground-breaking.

“The legislation affirms the role of the state in unlocking land for socio-economic development and for distributive purposes. The legislation also paves way for expropriation in the public interest and is in full alignment with the Constitution,” said the Deputy Minister in a statement.

The legislation places the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure as the executing authority of expropriation.

All applications for those seeking expropriation for a public purpose and in the public interest must go through the department.

Zikalala, in his capacity as the former Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, accelerated the finalisation of this legislation and oversaw its passing by the National Assembly.

The bill aligns with Section 25 of the Constitution and is modelled on international best practices and it complied with all public consultation processes.

“This is the legislation that will take South Africa in reality on the path of economic transformation and inclusive economic growth” said Zikalala.

“This is a culmination of the long history of struggle waged by the forbearers against the dispossession of the majority of Black people through the 1913 Land Act and the notorious Group Areas Act.

“We will use the newly promulgated legislation to enhance the delivery of infrastructure development programmes, industrialisation and agricultural reform that improves food security,” the Deputy Minister added.

He said that, as the President had indicated, the legislation will be implemented without destabilising the economic and development prospects of the country. – SAnews.gov.za

KwaZulu-Natal Legislature praises Umkhanyakude District on matric results

Members of the KwaZulu-Natal legislature have praised the Umkhanyakude District for its remarkable turnaround - rising from the worst-performing education district to one of South Africa’s top performing regions in the matric exams.

The Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPLs) urged the district to share best practice on achieving excellent matric results with other districts.

Speaking during the first visit to Umkhanyakude since the district was announced as the top-performing district, the members described the region’s meteoric rise as a remarkable achievement that should be emulated.

UMkhanyakude achieved an overall matric pass rate of 92.8%.

“Not so long ago, this district was number 75 out of 75 districts in the country. Today it is number three in the entire country, and it is also number one in the province. This shows that the district has a well-oiled strategy which is producing handsome dividends,” MPL Celiwe Madlopha said.

She said the legislature had contributed immensely to KwaZulu-Natal’s stellar education performance by providing effective oversight and identifying barriers to effective learning and teaching.

“Members of the legislature are visiting four schools in Umkhanyakude District today and tomorrow as part of the legislature’s School Functionality Monitoring Programme (SFMP). We are, among other things, monitoring infrastructure challenges that our schools face, the delivery of learner support material, the start of lessons, safety and security.

“The SFMP is our flagship programme that has helped to resolve many challenges in our schools. We appreciate the support we continue to receive from the provincial Executive and the schools governing bodies as we play our oversight role,” Madlopha said.

A comprehensive report will be compiled after the school visits and will be presented in the House for adoption and implementation. – SAnews.gov.za

Macpherson welcomes PwC probe into R800m oxygen plant tender

Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson has welcomed the department’s appointment of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding a controversial R800 million Oxygen Plant tender awarded by the Independent Development Trust (IDT).

The investigation follows the IDT’s admission last year that three companies were awarded the tender despite two lacking the necessary registration with the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA).

According to the department, the independent probe is expected to be completed within eight weeks. Its primary objectives include determining whether irregularities occurred during the tender process and whether officials should be held accountable.

The concerns stem from allegations made last year about potential irregularities in awarding the Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) Oxygen Plant bids. These include claims that two of the companies lacked SAHPRA registration and that one company may have submitted fraudulent documentation.

“This follows an admission by the IDT itself last year that concerns exist regarding the R800-million tender and that these concerns warrant investigation,” the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure said in a statement.

The PwC investigation will focus on several key areas, including:

  • Examining the tender process: Determining whether proper procedures were followed in appointing external service providers.
  • Identifying financial misconduct: Establishing whether officials caused the IDT to incur irregular, fruitless, or wasteful expenditure during the tender’s administration.
  • Evaluating legal compliance: Assessing whether IDT officials or external individuals violated laws or duties during the tendering process or subsequent contract management.
  • Quantifying financial losses: Determining the extent and value of financial losses incurred by the IDT in relation to the tender.
  • Uncovering irregularities: Identifying illegal activity or irregular conduct involving IDT officials or external service providers.
  • Recommending action: Proposing appropriate steps to hold responsible parties accountable where irregularities are confirmed.

“The independent investigation will determine whether irregularities occurred during the Oxygen Plant tendering process and whether further action is required against those implicated,” Minister Macpherson said.

He emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability, adding that the investigation is a crucial step in improving governance and ensuring that public funds are used responsibly.

“As Minister, I cannot turn a blind eye when serious allegations arise involving close to R1 billion of public money,” Macpherson stated. “This is why the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure will remain focused on uncovering the truth, holding officials accountable where necessary, and ensuring the integrity of public procurement processes.”

Macpherson also expressed confidence that the investigation would clear innocent individuals while holding guilty parties to account.

The minister concluded, “The independent investigation should be welcomed as a vital tool in restoring public trust and addressing any misconduct in the Oxygen Plant tendering process.”

Operations at Groblers Bridge temporarily suspended

Operations at Groblers Bridge temporarily suspended

The Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), Dr Michael Masiapato, on Wednesday said operations at the Groblers Bridge port of entry into Botswana are still temporarily suspended due to heavy rainfall, which caused significant flooding at the various operational areas.

“We are pleased to announce that the floodwaters have now subsided, allowing for an assessment of the port infrastructure,” Masiapato said.

Masiapato said a thorough inspection was conducted by experts from various engineering disciplines to determine the extent of the damage caused by the flooding.

According to Masiapato, following the assessment conducted at the port of entry, a comprehensive project plan has been developed to address the necessary repairs and ensure the port’s readiness for operational resumption.

The key activities in the project plan include the repairing of identified damages to the port infrastructure. Water quality tests will also need to be conducted to ensure the environment is safe for operations.

Masiapato said water underground will need to be allowed to be completely dry in order to carry the weight of the cargo trucks that pass through the port.

“It is anticipated that the repair and restoration process will take approximately six days to complete.

“Upon completion of these activities, the Groblers Bridge port of entry will be fully operational, resuming its critical role in facilitating cross-border movement and trade between South Africa and Botswana,” Masiapato said.

The BMA remains committed to ensuring the safety and functionality of all ports of entry, recognising their importance in enabling economic activity and connectivity.

Masiapato said the BMA is in continuous engagement with its counterparts in Botswana at all times on these matters and further updates will be provided as progress is made. – SAnews.gov.za

Public Works Department decries surge in infrastructure vandalism amid scrap metal theft

Public Works Department decries surge in infrastructure vandalism amid scrap metal theft

The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure has raised serious concerns about the relentless wave of infrastructure destruction, including the theft of aluminum and cables, the vandalism of traffic lights and railway lines, and the destruction of pylons.

In a recent incident, the department condemned the brazen actions of armed criminals who targeted government properties to steal steel, aluminum, and other valuable materials.

Late last night, security personnel at Public Works House, located in the Central Business District (CBD) of Pretoria, thwarted an attempted robbery by a group of armed intruders. The suspects were attempting to steal aluminum and steel infrastructure, including furniture, from the government premises.

The confrontation resulted in two suspects being shot after the group, armed with dangerous weapons, forcibly infiltrated the guarded property. The attackers are believed to be part of a notorious syndicate involved in the vandalism and theft of metals for sale in the scrap metal market.

Some of the suspects reportedly carried machetes (commonly referred to as pangas) to intimidate and attack security guards. Despite the violent encounter, the security team responded swiftly, wounding two intruders while others managed to escape.

“There have been numerous incidents of vandalism reported at various properties within the CBD area of Tshwane, with Public Works House being a frequent target,” the department stated. It added that fencing had also been repeatedly dismantled and stolen from government properties.

The department expressed concern that some of these crimes may be linked to individuals addicted to substances like nyaope, who sell stolen materials to scrap metal dealers for quick cash.

“The flourishing scrap metal industry and its apparent link to stolen materials are having a devastating impact on critical infrastructure and the broader economy,” the department warned.

The injured suspects were transported to a hospital, while some of the security personnel involved in the incident have been questioned as part of an ongoing police investigation.

“As investigations continue, the department will intensify security measures to safeguard public assets, which are essential for public use and economic growth,” the statement concluded.

President Ramaphosa outlines SA's G20 Presidency priorities at WEF

President Cyril Ramaphosa has highlighted the significance of South Africa's G20 Presidency and the economic priorities of the South African Government of National Unity during a special address to the 55th World Economic Forum in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland.

The President told world leaders that South Africa will focus its G20 Presidency on three themes - namely solidarity, equality and sustainable development.

He emphasised the country’s commitment to advancing a just energy transition, fostering inclusive growth and addressing global inequalities.

“As a leading forum for international economic cooperation, the G20 plays an important role in shaping and strengthening global architecture and governance on major international economic issues,” the President said.

He pointed out that the G20 is being hosted on the African continent for the first time in history.

“This is a moment of great significance for South Africa, the African continent and the world in that it was in Africa where humans developed the capacity and the impulse for cooperation.

“Cooperation has been one of the key markers of human development touching on many aspects of life, from survival and social organisation to technological and cultural progress, which is what the G20 was established for - to foster cooperation to deal with the challenges the world faces. Cooperation is the bedrock of human civilisation,” President Ramaphosa said.

He referred to former President Nelson Mandela’s speech at the WEF annual meeting 33 years ago, when Tata Madiba said: “Our interdependence, bringing us together into a common global home, across the oceans and the continents, demands that we all combine to launch a global offensive for development, prosperity and human survival.”

President Ramaphosa said South Africa's G20 Presidency is aimed at pursuing the objective of fostering solidarity, equality and sustainable development.

“It is South Africa’s firm view that these themes can best be taken forward through the collective actions of institutions like the G20 and various multilateral institutions of the world, especially the United Nations, the WTO [World Trade Organisation] and global financial institutions, which should be reformed and be more representative and responsive to the needs of the citizens of the world.

“We will seek to get the G20 to focus more on how we can enhance solidarity through collective efforts to ensure that in the pursuit of progress for all, no person and no country is left behind,” the President said.

He emphasised that the rights and freedoms of one people cannot be separated from the rights and freedoms of all peoples. The President said that this is the foundation on which solidarity is built.

He said one of the greatest impediments to growth, development and stability is the persistence of inequality within and between countries.

The pursuit of the UN Sustainable Development Goal on reducing inequality is as much of an economic imperative as it is a social imperative, President Ramaphosa said.

“As the G20, we need deliberate and coordinated efforts to focus on inclusive growth based on responsive trade and investment to grow the incomes of poor nations and the poorest in society and to ensure equal access to opportunities especially for women and young people.

“For nations to flourish, equality and prosperity must be available to everyone – regardless of gender, race, religious beliefs or economic status,” he said.

Mobilising Finance for a Just Energy Transition

Another of South Africa’s priorities for its G20 Presidency is to mobilise finance for a just energy transition.

President Ramaphosa underscored the need for enhanced climate financing, urging global financial institutions to redirect unused Special Drawing Rights to support developing economies, particularly in Africa and the Global South.

“It is simply not fair that over 60% of Special Drawing Rights are concentrated in a handful of wealthy countries. These resources should empower countries in Africa to invest in infrastructure, education, health care, and industrial development,” the President said.

He called for innovative financing mechanisms and private capital to scale sustainable development, urging global institutions to derisk and support financing for emerging markets.

Highlighting South Africa’s Just Energy Transition Partnership, the President said: “We must accelerate the transition to low-carbon economies in a manner that is just and inclusive, while recognising the damage that climate change has already caused.”

Strengthening disaster resilience

With the increasing frequency of climate-induced natural disasters, President Ramaphosa said South Africa has therefore made the strengthening of disaster resilience as one of the priorities of its G20 Presidency.

He called for special financing and insurance mechanisms to support post-disaster reconstruction, particularly in vulnerable regions.

Harnessing critical minerals for inclusive growth

President Ramaphosa said another priority is to harness critical minerals for inclusive growth and development.

“We need a G20 framework on green industrialisation and investments to ensure progress towards a grand bargain that promotes value addition to critical minerals close to the source of extraction.

“We also need the development of low-carbon manufacturing value chains which can support decarbonisation and industrial development. As mineral extraction accelerates to match the needs of the energy transition, the countries and local communities endowed with these resources must be the ones to benefit the most,” the President said.

Showcasing Africa’s promise

President Ramaphosa highlighted Africa as the next frontier of global growth, with its abundant natural resources, young population and expanding markets.

He called for G20 support for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Adjustment Fund, investments in infrastructure, youth skills development, and women’s economic empowerment.

“The digitisation of the continent to enhance trade and development is a key enabler. Through its G20 Presidency, South Africa is well-positioned to advance global cooperation and build partnerships for growth and development,” he said.

Advancing global cooperation

President Ramaphosa praised South Africa’s inclusive governance under the Government of National Unity, which he credited with fostering stability and investor confidence.

“This cooperative culture and approach was taken to a higher level with the establishment of the Government of National Unity following the elections we held in May last year.

“The Government of National Unity, made up of 10 political parties, has been vital to stability and inclusive governance, and has contributed to greater interest among investors in South Africa’s economic prospects,” he said.

The President said over the last few years, the South African government has been working closely with social partners in business and in labour to address key national challenges and drive inclusive growth.

Concluding his address, President Ramaphosa extended an invitation to world leaders to attend the G20 Summit in Johannesburg later this year.

He said the seeds of human progress were sown in Africa, where the earliest forms of cooperation were forged and developed.

“As the leaders of the G20 return to Africa, we make a call that we all harness these essential capabilities that will make us take action to build a better and fairer world. We intend that the G20 in Johannesburg this year should be a forum where cooperation and collaboration amongst the leading economies in the world will be taken to a higher level.

“Acting together, we should build an inclusive, just and equal world in which all may prosper, leaving no one and no country behind. I look forward to welcoming you to the G20 in Johannesburg later this year.

“Even if you do not participate in any of the 130 G20-related meetings, I invite you to come and see South Africa for yourself, the most beautiful country in the world,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za

South Africa is undergoing ‘fundamental transformation’ – President Ramaphosa

South Africa is undergoing 'fundamental transformation' - President Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa, says South Africa is undergoing a “fundamental transformation” - as it seeks to accelerate inclusive economic growth.

President Ramaphosa was speaking at the South Africa Night World Economic Forum (WEF), held at the Garden Hall in Davos Klosters, Switzerland, on Tuesday evening.

The event, hosted by Brand South Africa, celebrated the country's G20 Presidency, an extraordinary opportunity to shape the global agenda for inclusive growth and sustainable development.

The event was held on the sidelines of the annual WEF meeting, which is taking place from 20-24 January 2025, under the theme: "Collaboration for the Intelligent Age".

The President told the gathering that the country has introduced reforms in sectors, including water, electricity and logistics, that are serving as a base for economic growth.

“South Africa is undergoing a fundamental transformation. We have introduced bold economic reforms to overcome persistent challenges and unlock the vast potential of our country and its people.

“These reforms have underpinned the country’s economic recovery in the wake of more than a decade of stagnant growth, state capture and the worst global pandemic in more than a century. These reforms are laying a firm foundation for sustained and accelerated growth into the future,” President Ramaphosa said.

He added that the reforms, and the subsequent structural transformation are “sharpening South Africa’s competitive edge, boosting productivity and attracting investment”.

The President pointed to the establishment of the Government of National Unity (GNU), as an example of the commitment from all leaders to maintain “stability, progress and partnership” in South Africa, as the country moves towards inclusive growth.

“While each party campaigned on different platforms, the Government of National Unity has agreed on a common programme to grow an inclusive economy, create jobs and build a capable state.

“Surveys have shown that South Africans have confidence in the Government of National Unity to take the country forward. It has also contributed to a marked improvement in business and investor confidence,” he said.

President Ramaphosa also pointed to partnerships that have been developed between government and social partners, in order to drive the country forward and face challenges together.

“We have a tradition of dialogue and cooperation, of working together to overcome even the most intractable of problems. As we confront the challenges of the present, social partners have been working together, in various forms and forums, to drive a programme of inclusive growth and transformation.

“A concrete example of this is the strategic partnership between the South African government and business. This collaboration focuses on innovative solutions to tackle critical issues, such as energy security, infrastructure gaps, crime and corruption, and job creation,” President Ramaphosa said.

President Ramaphosa described 2025 as “a momentous year for South Africa”, as the country takes its place as the first African country to bear the Presidency of the Group of 20 (G20).

He said through South Africa’s G20 Presidency, the country will demonstrate its unwavering commitment to global solidarity, equality, and sustainability.

“From the triumph of democracy 30 years ago, to our ongoing pursuit of inclusive growth, South Africa has demonstrated that collaboration and determination can shape a brighter future. It is this ethos we bring to the G20.

“Our Presidency provides a platform to amplify voices that have often gone unheard. It is an opportunity to advocate for solutions that prioritise the well-being of all, particularly the most vulnerable. South Africa is well placed to play this role,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za
