Liquid C2 Builds on Strategic Partnership With Cloudflare to Introduce Enhanced Cyber Security Solutions

Location: News
Liquid Intelligent Technologies

Liquid C2, a business unit of Cassava Technologies has further solidified its strategic partnership with Cloudflare. The latter has appointed Liquid C2 as the first distributor of their new range of cyber security products in South Africa, a testament to Liquid C2 expertise and trustworthiness in the industry. In addition to South Africa, the company will make the solutions available to its partners in Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

With the new offering, Liquid C2 is set to deliver application services that provide security and performance solutions for web applications, network services that secure enterprise networking and zero trust services. The 2023 Cyber Security report from Interpol revealed a 23% year-on-year increase in the average number of weekly cyberattacks per organisation in Africa, underscoring the pressing need for cost-effective integrated cybersecurity services for businesses in the mid-market segment.

Oswald Jumira, CEO of Liquid C2, reassures, “Through this partnership, we will enable our channel partner ecosystem through Cloudmania to expand their cyber security solution offering to their customers. Modern businesses need robust, scalable, and secure solutions to support hybrid work environments, protect against network and application-level threats, and ensure reliable connectivity. This offering, which combines the reach of Liquid C2 and Cloudmania and Cloudflare's expertise, is a testament to our commitment to enabling businesses to thrive in the growing African digital economy”.

Graham Turnbull, Cloudflare said, “Cloudflare is excited to announce an expanded partnership with Liquid C2 to launch a Managed Services Programme aimed at delivering advanced security and performance solutions to businesses of all sizes across Africa. As long-standing partners, Cloudflare and Liquid C2 are committed to empowering organisations with scalable, resilient digital infrastructure. This collaboration brings together Cloudflare's world-class technology with Liquid C2's extensive network, supporting the continent's digital growth and security needs”.

Additionally, Cloudflare's zero trust services provide a security model that requires strict identity verification for every individual and device trying to access resources on a private network. This solution is critical for any organisation that has moved to a hybrid and remote work model. In today's ever-evolving cyber threat landscape, businesses need to secure access to applications and data from any location, ensuring that only authorised users and devices can connect. This milestone enables African companies to level the playing field against their international counterparts, making Africa an attractive investment destination.

MTBPS welcomed by Cabinet

MTBPS welcomed by Cabinet

The Medium Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) is a demonstration of South Africa’s openness and accountability on spending.

This according to Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, who briefed the media on the outcomes of Cabinet's recent meeting.

The MTBPS was tabled by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana in Parliament two weeks ago.

“The MTBPS is part of our nation’s open and accountable budget cycle, which allows for medium to long-term financial planning of our nation’s finance. It also allows South Africans to hold government departments and entities to account on spending and gives investors surety over the country’s economic direction.

“[The MTBPS] gives effect to the commitments of the Government of National Unity to pursue rapid, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, and create a more just and equitable society by tackling poverty, inequality and unemployment,” she said.

Ntshavheni said Cabinet had welcomed the MTBPS, which supports the Government of National Unity’s aims.

During the delivery of the MTBPS in October, Godongwana highlighted four pillars to spur on inclusive economic growth, namely:

  • Maintaining macroeconomic stability.
  • Implementing structural reforms.
  • Building State capability.
  • Supporting growth-enhancing public infrastructure investment.

Ntshavheni said Cabinet is backing the statement delivered by Godongwana.

“Cabinet supports the four pillars to uplift the economy through macroeconomic stability, implementing structural reforms, building State capability and increasing public infrastructure investment.

“The country is also on track to be removed from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) greylist, having already addressed 16 of the 22 action items identified ahead of FATF reassessment in 2025,” Ntshavheni said. – SAnews.gov.za

Minister pleased with the rebounding construction sector

Minister pleased with the rebounding construction sector

Public Works and Infrastructure Minister, Dr Dean Macpherson, says he is pleased to see the construction sector rebounding.

The sector saw the largest job increases out of all sectors between Quarter 2 and Quarter 3, according to the Quarterly Labour Force Survey, released on Tuesday.

The construction sector added 176 000 jobs, with the country’s unemployment rate decreasing by 1.4%.

Macpherson said this shows that there are many green shoots within the construction industry, with additional reforms underway to increase investment and jobs.

According to Statistics South Africa, who released the Quarterly Labour Force Survey, South Africa’s unemployment figures have now decreased to 32.1% in the third quarter.

“While the unemployment figures remain stubbornly high, I am encouraged by the job growth seen in the construction sector which has shown that there are many green shoots within the industry. As we implement continued reforms to turn South Africa into a construction site, I look forward to the industry creating many more jobs which will improve the lives of our people,” Macpherson said.

“After many years where the construction industry has seen subdued investment, it is also very encouraging to see that the industry is starting to turn around as additional projects get off the ground.

“This is also a sign of confidence in proceeding with fixed investment projects. We are truly starting to build a better South Africa through building confidence in our construction industry,” the minister said.

Among the many interventions the Minister is implementing to attract additional infrastructure investment include:

  • Restructuring Infrastructure South Africa (ISA) to become a single port of entry for all major infrastructure projects in South Africa.
  • Reforming regulations around Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) to make it easier for the private sector to invest in construction projects.
  • Expanding the role of the Infrastructure Fund (IF) to play a bigger role in attracting additional private sector funding and blended financing to construction projects.
  • Introducing the first-of-its-kind project preparation financing which will see more construction projects being executed faster.

“Collectively, the measures we are implementing will see a significant increase in the number of construction projects in the country as we work to achieve our goal of turning South Africa into a construction site.

“In the weeks and months ahead, South Africans can look forward to seeing more cranes in the sky, and shovels in the ground. We are building South Africa,” Macpherson said. – SAnews.gov.za

KZN commits to economic development, investment growth toward 2030

Location: News

KZN commits to economic development, investment growth toward 2030

KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Thamsanqa Ntuli, has underscored the commitment to economic development, trade, and investment growth toward 2030, aligned with the province's broader strategic priorities.

Ntuli reiterated the province’s commitment during the KwaZulu-Natal Trade and Investment Conference currently underway at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban.

The two-day conference, which started on Monday, aims to promote, brand, and market KwaZulu-Natal as an investment destination, identify and develop investment opportunities, among others.

The conference brings together investors, government leaders, and industry captains to explore and amplify the province’s status as a top investment destination.

Delivering his keynote address on Monday, Ntuli highlighted that over the past decade, KwaZulu-Natal has attracted significant investments in key sectors, especially through developments at the Durban and Richards Bay Ports, two of Africa’s largest and busiest maritime hubs.

“Enhanced container capacity, automation, and infrastructure upgrades have strengthened KZN’s position as a regional logistics powerhouse. Similarly, the Dube Trade Port, adjacent to King Shaka International Airport, has drawn over R2 billion in investments, cementing its role in warehousing, logistics, and agriculture, including the Dube AgriZone, a major hub for export-focused agri-business,” Ntuli said.

Reflecting on the 2019 Provincial Trade and Investment Strategy’s achievements and areas for intensified effort, Ntuli said the strategy targeted R76 billion in new and expansionary investments by 2024. This is alongside the creation of approximately 68 000 jobs and an increase in the province’s national export value to R1.28 trillion.

While projections indicate that the targets may not be fully met by the year’s end, the Premier emphasised the need to redouble efforts in investment initiatives.

“The Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (RBIDZ) has fuelled growth in heavy industry and energy, particularly in metals like aluminium and steel, generating jobs and boosting export potential.

“Renewable energy investments, particularly in biomass and solar, have diversified KZN’s energy landscape, with biofuel production from the sugarcane industry enhancing the province’s green economy credentials.”

Growth in the agricultural sector

The Premier also highlighted the province’s strong agricultural sector, which has attracted investments in agro-processing, and supporting industries including sugar refining, dairy processing, and timber.

The Premier said this growth is further supported by a thriving food and beverage industry, pharmaceutical, and packaging sectors, benefiting from proximity to key ports and an expanding consumer base.

Tourism

He said tourism also remains central to KZN’s economy, supported by new hospitality investments, including the reopening of the international Hilton Hotel and the Durban Beach promenade renewal.

Noting KZN’s absence from many long-haul tourist packages, Premier Ntuli stressed the importance of positioning the province as a key destination for international tourism.

Ntuli highlighted several strategic assets crucial to the province’s competitive advantage, and these include expanded port capacities, Special Economic Zones (SEZs) like Richards Bay and Dube TradePort, and streamlined regulatory and tax incentives to attract foreign and local investments.

The Premier urged stakeholders to seize the opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which offers KZN unprecedented access to a $3.4 trillion market.

Partnerships

The Premier also addressed issues in freight rail services and port bottlenecks, emphasising that public-private partnerships could unlock efficiencies.

He further called attention to KZN’s role in automotive manufacturing, underscoring opportunities in electric vehicle (EV) component production to tap into Africa’s growing EV market.

“Sustainable growth initiatives, including green hydrogen, biomass, and digital innovation, are essential for positioning KZN as a leader in the renewable and digital economies. Collaboration with local universities and technology firms is building a skilled workforce to support industries like IT, finance, and business outsourcing, further enhancing KZN’s role as a technology and logistics hub,” Ntuli said.

The Premier emphasised the importance of resilient infrastructure, including sustainable energy investments, and inclusive growth that extends to all municipalities, cities, and rural areas.

He issued a call to action for deeper engagement with rural and municipal stakeholders, ensuring these areas are active participants and beneficiaries in KZN’s economic growth. – SAnews.gov.za

SIU to probe at least three municipalities

Location: News

SIU to probe at least three municipalities

At least three municipalities are to be placed under investigation by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU).

This after President Cyril Ramaphosa signed proclamations authorising the corruption busting unit to probe allegations of maladministration in the affairs of the Tshwane Metro Municipality, Mahikeng Local Municipality and Alfred Nzo Municipality.

The President also signed an amendment of the Chris Hani District Municipality proclamation.

SIU Spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago explained that at the investigation into the Tshwane Metro will focus on the procurement of services for the upgrading and extension of a macro surveillance closed circuit television system in Tshwane.

It will also probe whether there was “unauthorised, irregular, or wasteful expenditure by the municipality and losses incurred by the municipality or the state”.

“The investigation’s focus will zoom into the payments and establish whether the contracting and procurement were conducted in a manner that was not fair, competitive, transparent, equitable, or cost-effective.

“Additionally, these activities were contrary to applicable legislation; manuals, guidelines, practice notes, circulars, or instructions issued by the National Treasury or relevant Provincial Treasury; and policies, procedures, or practices of or applicable to the municipality.

“Furthermore, there was unlawful or improper conduct by officials or employees of the municipality, contractors, suppliers, service providers, or any other involved parties related to these allegations,” he said.

Mahikeng Local Municipality

The investigation into the Mahikeng Local Municipality will focus on two tenders, namely:

  • Lease agreement SCM/MLM17(A)/12/2015 dated 15 December 2015, and
  • Full Maintenance Lease Agreement SCM/MLM17(B)/12/2015 dated 23 February 2016.

“The SIU’s probe will assess whether the payments made were conducted in a manner that was neither fair, competitive, transparent, equitable, nor cost-effective. These actions were contrary to applicable legislation; manuals, guidelines, practice notes, circulars, or instructions issued by the National Treasury or relevant Provincial Treasury; and policies, procedures, or practices applicable to the Mahikeng Municipality.

“The SIU will seek to ascertain whether the process involved was unlawful, irregular, or improper intervention by employees or officials of the Mahikeng Municipality and, in some cases, was fraudulent and led to unauthorised, irregular, or wasteful expenditure by the Mahikeng Municipality or the State,” he said.

He added that the SIU will seek to ascertain whether there was “unlawful or improper conduct by employees or officials of the Mahikeng Municipality, the service provider, or any other individuals or entities involved”.

Alfred Nzo District Municipality

At least seven contracts are expected to be placed under scrutiny at the Alfred Nzo District Municipality. These are:

  • Implementation of Water Services Infrastructure Grant projects in Ntabankulu (Appointment of a panel of service providers, Consulting Engineers and Contractors, for the Planning, Design and Construction of Water Services Infrastructure Grant funded projects in the Alfred Nzo District Municipality - Ntabankulu Local Municipality)
  • Mount Ayliff Bulk Peri-Urban Water Supply (Implementation of Pump station and a reservoir)
  • Servicing Mbizana Town Area with 2ML Waste Water Treatment Works and Outfall Sewer (Construction of 2ML Waste Water Treatment Works and Outfall Sewer Pipeline) Mbizana Sewer
  • Kwabhaca Regional Bulk Water Supply Scheme at Mount Frere (Construction of Water Treatment Works and other water schemes at Mount Frere Peri-Urban)
  • Tender No: ANDM/IDMS-PMU/131/13/06/18: Greater Mbizana Water Supply Project
  • Tender No: ANDM/IDMS-PMU/41/23/09/19: Greater Mbizana Water Supply Project Phase 33: Implementation of Ward 4 & 27: Zone 0 Main Pipeline Contract 3B; and
  • Tender No: ANDM/IDMS-PMU/133/31/01/20: Matatiele Ward 5 Water Supply Project Phase 3 Contract 3 Matolweni Secondary Mains and Reticulation

“The SIU probe will look at unauthorised, irregular, or wasteful expenditure incurred by the municipality. Additionally, if there was irregular, unlawful, or improper conduct by officials or employees of the municipality, contractors, suppliers, or service providers associated with the municipality, or any other involved person or entity,” Kganyago said.

Chris Hani District Municipality

A proclamation on the probe into the Chris Hani District Municipality on the appointment of the Chris Hani Co-operative Development Centre NPC for the conversion of the community service providers and operators into functional co-operatives has been amended.

The investigation period has been extended to start from 01 December 2011 to 08 November 2024 and the amendment authorises the SIU to add the procurement of goods, works or services in terms of Tender No. 33/2015/MD (TN) – Cluster 9 Backlog Eradication: Tsomo Water Treatment and River Abstraction Works.

“The amendment results from the SIU’s investigations which revealed that the SIU needs to investigate further areas that the existing proclamations did not cover. The SIU requested a proclamation amendment in terms of time and focus areas,” Kganyago said. – SAnews.gov.za

Private sector an important player in education sector

Location: News

Private sector an important player in education sector

Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube has called on the private sector to consider taking their involvement in the education sector to the next level.

The Minister highlighted that the private sector has the resources, expertise, and capacity to make an enormous impact on the education landscape.

In addition, the country has seen more private sector entities involved in education initiatives investing in infrastructure, providing technology, supporting teacher training, and even partnering with educational institutions to design relevant, future-oriented curricula.

The Minister was addressing the Partnerships for Education Business Breakfast held at the Johannesburg Council for The Disabled (JOCOD) in Lenasia on Monday.

The business breakfast was designed to foster meaningful dialogue and establish partnerships to alleviate budgetary constraints in the education sector.

Minister Gwarube used the event to outline her strategic priorities for the seventh administration and to discuss how the public-private sector collaboration can drive sustainable improvements in the education system.

“Today, I want to call on our private sector partners to consider taking their involvement in the education sector to the next level.

“As South Africa’s seventh administration in the Government of National Unity [GNU], we are fully committed to improving education outcomes across the country.

“We recognise that this cannot be achieved by government alone. The private sector has a significant role to play, and we are here to facilitate, support, and collaborate with you in ways that make the greatest impact,” she said, adding that a step-change investment in education means more than just financial support, it means active participation.

The Minister invited the private sector partners to work closely with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) to co-create programs that build the skills needed for a competitive and productive economy.

“We need your input, your insights, and your innovation to help shape our education system in a way that prepares learners for real-world challenges and opportunities.”

Investing in quality education

With the country having ushered in a GNU in May, the Minister emphasised that education was an important issue that everyone can agree on, regardlessof their political inclinations.

She said every single South African has a vested interest in the quality of the nation’s education sector while adding that since the dawn of democracy, much has been done to provide access to basic education.

However, 30 years later, she said the nation now needed to shift its focus to quality education.

The Minister referred to an international study that revealed that about the 80% of learners who were tested (as a sample) could not read for meaning in any language.

While this was a small sample, she said that this was gravely concerning.

“If we do not fix literacy – which is reading, writing and counting – the DBE had failed on its core function. This is why every single priority in the seventh administration speaks to this goal.

“We must make sure through early child learning; we can achieve the goal of reading for meaning by Grade 4. Government has a tendency to focus only on the quality of outcomes like the matric pass rate – but not on the foundations of learning.

“I endeavour to reorientate this planning and thinking. Let us get the basics right and we will achieve a great deal in the education sector,” the Minister said.

Minister Gwarube emphasised that quality education is the foundation upon which the country can build a prosperous future.

“It is the tool that will empower our young people to innovate, to lead, and to contribute meaningfully to their communities and economies.

“However, to achieve this, our education systems must be strong, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of a modern workforce.”

She further emphasised the need to provide not only foundational literacy and numeracy but also the skills necessary for the jobs and challenges of the 21st century which are digital literacy, critical thinking, adaptability, and creativity.

Priorities

Touching on the priorities, the Minister said the 7th Administration has identified several key priorities which include improved access to and strengthen the quality of Early Childhood Development (ECD).

“A strong foundation is important for literacy and numeracy. Early Childhood Development sets the stage for lifelong learning and personal development. We want every child in South Africa to leave our ECDs with a solid foundation in reading and counting,” the Minister said.

Other priorities are improving literacy and numeracy across all phases of schooling, special education, accelerated teacher development and safety in schools.

“Learners need safe, conducive environments where they can focus on their studies without interruption. This includes basic facilities such as dignified flushing toilets, but also learning environments free from crime, extortion rackets, contaminated food products and other dangerous chemical,” she said.

The Minister noted the high number of learners who have fallen ill and children from Naledi in Gauteng who tragically lost their lives due to food bought from local spaza shops and consumed on school premises.

“Last week Wednesday I began a process to ban the dangerous chemical known as organophosphate from all schools in South Africa. This is a proactive measure to prevent the risk of this chemical ever being used as a pesticide in any of our schools,” she said.

Kruger National Park Road maintenance project makes good progress

The South African National Parks (SANParks) has noted the significant progress made by the Kruger National Park (KNP) in repairing and maintaining its roads.

In its 100 days road maintenance report, KNP has outlined the work done thus far.

“It details progress in the blading of gravel roads in KNP as part of the overall ongoing infrastructure and maintenance programme. This intervention also sought to ensure preparedness for the 2024 festive season so as to enhance customer experience as tourists are expected to visit in numbers during this period.

“Most roads in the south of Olifants River (Marula Region of the park) were bladed between July and October 2024 and are constantly being monitored to ensure they remain in good condition,” SANParks said on Friday.

The repairs and maintenance included roads leading to many of the bush camps in the south of the national park.

Repairs are ongoing with focus now directed at the northern side of the Olifants River (Nxanatseni Region of KNP) where considerable progress has been made.

Road repairs are prioritised based on the extent of usage by park visitors. Therefore, roads which are mostly utilised are given priority attention. -SAnews.gov.za

TNPA appointed Zutari for implementation plan for the Port of Durban

TNPA appointed Zutari for implementation plan for the Port of Durban

The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has appointed Zutari, a leading infrastructure and advisory firm, as the transaction advisor to validate the Island View Precinct Strategy and implementation plan for the Port of Durban.

This appointment is a pivotal move aimed at transforming the liquid bulk sector in South Africa while ensuring security of supply.

“The Island View Strategy, originally approved in 2019, is set to undergo a comprehensive revision to ensure it remains relevant in today’s rapidly evolving landscape.

“Zutari’s role will be to analyse current market trends, review existing strategies and develop a revised comprehensive plan aimed at enhancing the sector's sustainability and operational efficiency. This initiative aligns with TNPA's commitment to implementing global best practices,” it said in a statement.

The Port of Durban’s Island View precinct is a South African national key point, managing approximately 74% of South Africa's liquid bulk imports.

With 12 terminal operators over a 1 545 000 m² area, it handles a variety of products, including petroleum, chemicals and agricultural goods. As part of the country’s transition to sustainable energy, the port will also facilitate the handling of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and other cleaner energy sources.

Zutari’s role includes ensuring that the strategy benefits both TNPA and the liquid bulk industry while safeguarding supply chain integrity, especially in this major petrochemical hub.

TNPA is committed to ensuring security of supply, improved terminal operational efficiencies, operational continuity, risk management and job preservation with the precinct supporting nearly 2 000 direct and indirect jobs as of 2022.

Mpumi Dweba-Kwetana, Acting TNPA Managing Executive for the Eastern Region, said the Island View Strategy aims to accelerate transformation, ensure a reliable supply of liquid bulk commodities, and increase throughput efficiency.

“The appointment of Zutari is a significant milestone towards achieving these goals. Our collaborative engagement with stakeholders, including Fuels Industry Association of South Africa (formerly known as SAPIA), the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA), the Chemical and Allied Industries’ Association (CAIA), and terminal operators, has been crucial in building confidence and identifying areas for cooperation in safeguarding the liquid bulk sector,” said Dweba-Kwetana.

SANPC Launches Global Investor Roadshow

Location: News
African Energy Chamber

The newly-sanctioned South African National Petroleum Company (SANPC) kicked off its global investor roadshow at African Energy Week: Invest in African Energies on Thursday, inviting investors and governments to engage with South Africa's oil and gas prospects, while showcasing strategic plans for the new entity.

Speaking on the rationale behind the creation of the SANPC, South Africa's Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, Gwede Mantashe, emphasized the need to rationalize and consolidate the country's many state-owned enterprises. The aim is to maximize efficiencies, streamline the sector, reduce costs and prioritize petroleum development as a catalyst for economic growth.

“The focus is to drive economic growth and development. We want it to grow – we want to get into fossil fuels. We must do it. [We want to] improve operational efficiencies, scale of market and market share,” said Minister Mantashe.

The SANPC operates under a broad mandate to acquire, generate, manufacture, market and distribute all forms of energy, including crude oil, natural gas, coal, renewable energy and biofuels. South Africa's extensive coal bed methane and shale gas resources were highlighted, including the gas-rich Karoo Basin and the Saldanha Bay gas-to-power project. The country also benefits from deep-sea ports, robust infrastructure and a favorable regulatory framework, with the potential to create synergies with nearby oil and gas producers such as Mozambique and Angola.

“We need to start thinking as a region instead of as countries,” said Godfrey Moagi, CEO of SANPC.

South Africa's refining capabilities were also emphasized as a critical priority, with enhancing the country's liquid fuels security identified as a matter of national security and strategic interest. The SANPC stated that in 2024, South Africa is expected to import 70% of its manufactured liquid fuel needs.

“This has put the country at risk, and we are dealing with issues of security of supply. We need to prioritize commercial sustainability for the entire CEF Group to drive economic recovery,” said Moagi. “In South Africa, we import $2.5 billion of crude oil and products. The SANPC is going to change this, so that South Africa looks differently.”

“[Reviving] refining capacity reduces the risk on petroleum supply. We must cushion it with our own refining capacity,” said Minister Mantashe.

Following its formation in 2024, the SANPC will enter its second phase of operationalization in 2025, which includes forming strategic partnerships and alliances, operationalizing its assets, and optimizing its business and service model. Starting in 2026, the company plans to enter its growth phase, deploying an integrated “New Energy” growth strategy, developing and optimizing assets, expanding its portfolio, diversifying revenue streams and advancing its technology and innovation strategy.

The SANPC will host a series of upcoming roadshows spanning Africa, Europe and the Middle East, organized by Energy Capital & Power.

Local Manufacturing Key to Advancing Green Technologies

Location: News
African Energy Chamber

The African continent is developing promising green technologies to address energy access disparities and to foster economic growth. Its countries should take an active role in local sustainable energy solutions, rather than merely being consumers of these technologies.

At a dedicated panel session at African Energy Week: Invest in African Energies 2024, panelists emphasized the need for countries already producing oil and gas to utilize local energy resources for the purposes of enhancing value and meeting domestic needs, particularly for secluded and rural areas that do not have access to energy on the grid. They agreed that green technology and innovation could not be advanced without significant investments in local capacity, particularly in manufacturing and grid infrastructure.

Moderated by S&P Global Head of Energy Transition, Ashutosh Singh, panelists of the Advancing Green Technology and Innovation in Africa session further agreed that while renewable energy may not create immediate large-scale jobs, strategic planning by policymakers could lead to millions of new opportunities as the sector evolves.

James White, CEO of Comet Energy, highlighted that legislative barriers also exist in many African nations. In South Africa, for instance, larger solar installations connected to the grid need a generation license from National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA). This, White believes, adds an additional layer of complexity and can deter potential investors or developers from pursuing solar projects.

Although recent amendments to policies have raised the threshold for embedded generation projects without a license to 100 MW, navigating these regulations still poses significant challenges, he noted. “We also need to look at developing local supply chains, which are needed to further drive down costs and improve accessibility to technologies,” he said.

Dennis Bauer, Senior Executive Energy Transition Advisor, Neuman & Esser discussed the potential of hydrogen as key to Africa's energy transition.

By 2035, more than 50 million tons per year of cost-competitive green hydrogen can be produced on the continent by blocks in Morocco, Egypt and South Africa. However, Bauer emphasized that localized supply chains are necessary to support these developments. “Developing local manufacturing capabilities for battery components and other technologies can significantly reduce costs and enhance sustainability,” he said.

The panel discussion also touched on advancements in solar technology, noting improvements in efficiency and flexibility that can facilitate deployment in remote areas.

CEO of South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI), Dr Zwanani Titus Mathe, stressed the importance of learning from successful models surrounding new green technologies, like China's investment in research and development (R&D).

“We need to establish centers of competence across Africa focused on R&D, manufacturing and skills development to position the continent as a leader in green technology. As African nations commit to investing in green innovation, collaboration among governments, businesses, and communities is also essential,” he said.

Director of International Relations at IFP Energies nouvelle (IFPEN), Dr Said Nachet, concluded that Africa has the potential to lead in green technology. “By harnessing local resources and fostering innovation, the continent can emerge as a hub for green technology and sustainable energy solutions,” he said.

Africa’s Energy Infrastructure Can Only Succeed with Enhanced Transmission

Location: News
African Energy Chamber

As the demand for electricity continues to rise across the African continent, it is imperative for countries to act swiftly to enhance transmission capabilities and develop robust infrastructure to secure new energy integration sources over the next 25 years.

A recent report by consulting firm McKinsey & Company estimates that $400 billion will be required to enhance electricity transmission and distribution capacity across Africa by 2050. This investment is critical for modernizing energy infrastructure and ensuring energy security for the continent.

During a panel discussion titled ‘Optimizing Africa's Grid Capacity' at the African Energy Week: Invest in African Energies 2024 conference, Eskom's Transmission Group Executive, Segomoco Scheppers, highlighted the potential of the Electricity Regulation Amendment Act 38 of 2024 for South Africa and its neighboring countries.

This legislation will facilitate the establishment of a market operator in South Africa, creating opportunities for diverse players in the energy sector. “This shift signifies a transformative period in our industry as we adapt to new market dynamics,” he stated.

Despite having interconnections of 400 kV with neighboring countries, Scheppers acknowledged existing challenges. “Strengthening these connections is essential for enhancing regional cooperation and ensuring a reliable energy supply across borders. The reliance on thermal generation in the south, particularly to support countries like Zambia, underscores the need for stronger interconnections,” he explained.

Eskom is further embarking on an extensive domestic expansion program aimed at rapid development – an endeavor that also presents significant challenges. “Learning from global leaders in infrastructure development, particularly from experiences in China, could provide valuable insights into scaling our efforts efficiently,” Scheppers added.

Wang Wenan, Chief Representative, African Representative Office at the State Grid of China, discussed the successful completion of major projects, including the largest long-distance transmission project on the continent — a 500 kV DC line from Ethiopia to Kenya.

However, he noted that fostering private participation in energy projects remains a primary obstacle. “Engaging in dialogues about investment barriers and sharing best practices is crucial for unlocking potential growth in Africa's energy sector,” he emphasized.

Also speaking on the panel, Willy Ireri, Executive Director of Osprey Renewables, highlighted that while East Africa has abundant renewable resources such as wind, solar, and geothermal energy, access to reliable transmission infrastructure in this region also remained a critical challenge. “We are therefore committed to collaborate with state utilities and private investors to ensure that generated electricity reaches emerging green industries in the region,” he said.

With favorable legislation for private investment in transmission expected to be operational by 2025, Osprey Renewables aims to play a vital role in facilitating access to renewable energy for consumers.

“Our mandate at Osprey extends beyond generation; we actively engage across the entire value chain and we are seeing growing interest in green manufacturing and hybrid data centers,” Ireri added, noting that the Kenyan government has initiated proposals inviting independent transmission projects, signaling a positive shift toward increased private sector participation.

Power and Grid Segment President at Schneider Electric, Gary Lawrence, highlighted that a modernization of power grids was also needed. “The traditional grid was designed over a century ago for one-directional flow; today's needs require a bidirectional grid that allows seamless interaction between producers and consumer.”

The industry is balancing supply and demand effectively through initiatives such as collaborating with Egypt's Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy to develop distribution control centers that enhance grid intelligence and implementing distributed energy management systems in South Africa.

Imbizo a “demonstration of GNU at work”

Location: News

Imbizo a "demonstration of GNU at work"

President Cyril Ramaphosa has hailed the KwaZulu-Natal District Development Model (DDM) Presidential Imbizo as a powerful example of the Government of National Unity (GNU) in action.

The President underscored the collaborative efforts of various political leaders to address pressing community issues.

Addressing community members at the Umnini Sportsfield in Umgababa, the President said the imbizo was a fairly productive session.

“As I end, I think we have held a fairly productive imbizo session. Today has been a clear demonstration of how our Government of National Unity is also working. I have Ministers from our various political parties that are part of the GNU.

“I would like to thank them all and I want all the parties in the GNU to see the value of izimbizo. They are important because they enable us to interact with our people and hear their views, and answer their questions and at the same time, follow up on their issues that they have raised,” the President said.

The Presidential Imbizo is a platform for communities to interact with government leaders from all three spheres of government on service delivery challenges, and for the executive to respond to the community on what they are doing to resolve those issues.

Community members gathered at the Umnini Sportsfield raised issues such as crime, unemployment, the rising cost of living and matters concerning education.

The South African Democratic Teachers Union asked President Ramaphosa to intervene on the issue of safety and security at KwaZulu-Natal schools, highlighting previous incidents where teachers were attacked, shot and killed at schools.

Before the Ministers took to the podium to respond to the above issues, President Ramaphosa apologised for the delayed start due to technical issues, stressing the need for better preparedness at such events.

Ministers in the GNU accompanying the President responded to the issues respectively and promised residents that they will follow up and provide solutions.

Turning to the City of eThekwini municipality, the President also spoke about plans to rejuvenate Durban’s tourism sector, which has historically made the city the "holiday mecca" of South Africa.

With tourism numbers currently in decline, President Ramaphosa expressed optimism for a revival through the planned reopening of key hotels like the Hilton and lease renewals for iconic establishments such as the Maharani and Elangeni.

“Durban has been the holiday mecca of our country. Many people from all over the country have always considered Durban when they needed to go on a holiday.

“Tourisms in the province has gone down but the mayor has plans to revive big hotels such as the Hilton Hotel and the renewal of leases by Southern Sun of the Maharani and Elangeni Hotel.

“The business sector has pledged to invest billions of rands to revive tourism, so I am looking forward to the revival of tourism so that Durban can go back to being the jewel of South African tourism. It must once again become the mecca of tourism in SA,” the President said.

Tourism Minister Patricia De Lille said that her department is working hard to rebuild the tourism sector in the province.

“Tourism is a very important sector for this province. It is making a significant contribution to the GDP and economic growth of the province. The tourism sector has gone down in KZN, but we are working hard with the Presidential Task Team and the private sector to rebuild it.”

The Minister said that she has already agreed with the KZN Premier that they will be meeting as a matter of urgency so they can see how they can work together with the plans of the province to do an aggressive marketing campaign to deal with all the negative perceptions around the province.

“For the summer season, the department partnered with the private sector and already we have 440 private sector tourist attractions that are offering discounted deals for the summer season and I want to encourage all South Africans to look at the Shot left site and check the discounts,” de Lille said.

The President also drew attention to ongoing infrastructure challenges, particularly highlighting the partial collapse of a bridge on the N2 highway, which has disrupted local transportation.

He expressed confidence in South African engineers, who have devised a plan to restore the bridge, calling it a testament to the country’s engineering expertise.

“In the morning, I went to the N2 bridge that partially collapsed. The bridge is causing a lot of inconvenience for the people, as it is an important road on the N2," the President said. - SAnews.gov.za
