Tsepho portable power brings light to informal settlements

Tsepho portable power brings light to informal settlements

A youth-led enterprise from Vrygrond in the Western Cape, is switching on lights, plugs and lives through its portable power stations solution.

Fuelled by a desire to make an impactful change, three young entrepreneurs, Vincent Mosebe, who is the founder and CEO of Mosebe Enterprise (ME); Leandro Antonio, Marketing Director; and Donovan Pedzai, Chief Operations Officer, set out to revolutionise the energy sector.

They used recycled materials to create the power stations for underserved and rural communities in the Western Cape and beyond.

Their pilot flagship power station “Tsepho – The Power of Hope” is an innovative 10Ah [amp-hour] solar charge energy solution that targets informal settlement households who would otherwise utilise unsafe power methods, including candles and illegal connections, that often lead to settlement fires - and those at the mercy of constant and pro-longed power outages and cable theft.

The trio are exhibiting alongside other start-ups, Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs), investors and policy makers at the Global Entrepreneurship Congress+Africa.

The congress is a gathering of entrepreneurs and leaders from 43 African countries, which is currently underway at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in the Western Cape.

Through the organisations funded to implement development entrepreneurial programmes for youth not-in-education-employment-or-training (NEET), the National Development Agency (NDA) extended the invitation to 23 entrepreneurs to afford them a linkage opportunity to showcase their businesses, network and participate as delegates at the conference.

The NDA is an agency of government that reports to the National Assembly. It was  formed in 1999 as government’s response to the challenge of poverty and its causes in South Africa.

Mosebe said their power stations address safety and electrification problems experienced by residents in informal settlements.

“Currently, statistics report that an average of 10 shacks catch fire per day in South Africa. We have first-hand experience and have lost personal belongings and community lives to shack fires, having grown up in Vrygrond.

“Tsepho offers a sustainable, affordable, reliable, and eco-friendly power solution that has features, including multiple USB ports, a powerful lithium-ion battery with solar compatibility and 1 12v LED light bulb. Tsepho is not just a device; it is a catalyst for change – a beacon of hope that will bring about a brighter sustainable future,” Mosebe said.

The entrepreneurs have leveraged personal funds to scale production and conduct on-the-ground research.

Mosebe said their immediate plans include expanding production capacity, extending reach to new communities, and fostering more collaborations for future social impact and export.

He said the power station range also includes a bigger version “2 Tsepho” with similar capabilities including an additional feature of a bug-repellent UV light that exterminates insects and bugs (pest control).

“With this power station, we are targeting campers and the caravan community who need extended power. Our next goal is to extend the products further into African countries that struggle with Malaria cases. Additionally, there are two more ranges with extended power capabilities to power up a single power socket that can power up a fridge or microwave.

“The largest, ‘version 3’, packs up a 20.8Ah battery and a 300W inverter offering increased power capacity. This would be a useful tool for students – they can charge laptops and keep WIFI going during outages, promoting a consistent learning experience.

“The starter pack retails from R1 500 without the solar panel. We also offer warranty up to a year for any technical faults,” Mosebe said.– SAnews.gov.za

Cabinet approves Industry Waste Tyre Management Plan

Cabinet announced it has approved the Industry Waste Tyre Management Plan (IndWTMP) for implementation.

This follows a comprehensive, multi-year development process that included various rounds of public consultation.

Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni made the announcement on Thursday on the outcomes of the Cabinet meeting held the previous day.

“The IndWTMP provides a plan to divert 100% of new waste tyres from storage, while simultaneously targeting the processing of existing stockpiles. This will be done through the development of additional waste tyre processing capacity, which will be supported by government through market development initiatives,” the Minister explained.

According to Ntshavheni, waste tyre collections will also be expanded, supported by the more efficient and effective management of transport and depot operation services by regional implementers.

The plan also provides additional entrepreneurial opportunities for township Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs), in line with the National Township Economy Revitalisation Policy and Implementation Plan.

The strong focus, she said, will be on the youth, women and people with disabilities.

“These opportunities include the planned expansion of micro-collection and micro-depot networks to all nine provinces.”

In addition, she told journalists that SMMEs will be supported by the Departments of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment and Small Business Development to take advantage of opportunities stemming from the expansion and more effective delivery of the waste tyre value chain.

“The MoU [Memorandum of Understanding] between the two departments on SMME support will be expanded to specifically include waste tyres.”

The plan is available on the website of the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment at www.dffe.gov.za. – SAnews.gov.za

SAA, Takatso deal collapses

SAA, Takatso deal collapses

Following three years of negotiation, Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan has announced the termination of negotiations for the transaction to sell 51% of South African Airways (SAA) to the Takatso Consortium.

The collapse of the negotiations – which put an end to the sale to the equity partner – was announced during a media briefing by the Minister in Cape Town on Wednesday evening.

Gordhan explained that while three years ago, a valuation of SAA’s business and assets had been reached, circumstances have now changed – prompting a disagreement on the revised transaction structure.

Three years ago, the airline had undergone business rescue, battled through being grounded and was facing serious challenges following the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Late last year, clearly, we had a different market, we had a different economy, and we had a different flying public in terms of numbers of people that were flying and a new valuation was done.

“And the new valuation…the business came out now at a value of R1 billion and the property went up to about R5.5 billion which meant that any negotiations on this transaction would have to take into account the new valuations that have emerged,” he said.

The Minister revealed that negotiations continued “for the latter part of last year” and since this year began.

“However, we came to a point where whilst there was meeting of minds…on some of the issues, there were other issues on which there was no meeting of minds.

“So late last week, there was agreement that in terms of a clause in the old sale and purchase agreement, whereby mutual consent, this transaction could be terminated. That clause was put into action and both parties have agreed – after we enquired about the status of the negotiation – that there was no clear path forward as far as the transaction with Takatso is concerned.”

Gordhan insisted that because SAA remains a public entity:

  • Cognisance must be placed on its growth over the past five years;
  • Fair value must be placed on the sale of the 51% stake in the airline;
  • and the process to sell the shares must ensure that SAA is left in a “more sustainable condition than it was in 2019”.

He added that despite the collapse of the deal, the future remains bright for the airline and dismissed any notions that it will rely on government bailouts going forward.

“We are convinced, in terms of the numbers available to us, that it can sustain itself for the next year to 18 months and there are various, other ways in which immediate financing can be obtained.

“But at no stage, in the course of the months that come, will SAA get money from the fiscus. It must run its operations as efficiently as it can and as profitably as it can and sustain itself,” he said.

Moving forward

Gordhan assured employees of the state-owned airline that their jobs are currently not in danger as a result of the collapse of the deal.

“So the message to the SAA staff…is that you don’t worry about your jobs, you don’t worry about the future of your families, that we will ensure that we work with the board and management…to continue to support the sustainability of SAA and to ensure that the corporate plan that has been developed by SAA is further strengthened,” he said.

READ | SAA officially relaunched

The Minister added that the corporate plan is well fleshed out and projects a growth in the airline.

“That corporate plan actually entails the gradual growth in the number of routes that SAA will take up in the course of the next few years. Currently, it has about 19 routes and that will grow up to 40 routes in a five year period.

“Similarly, it will have the capacity to lease more aircraft, both for domestic use, use within the continent and for inter-continental flights as well.

“All of these plans will be rigorously examined with the necessary aviation expertise to ensure that jobs are secure, that the airline is secure and that there is a future for SAA and its flag to be seen continuously within the country, within the continent and across continents as well,” Gordhan said. – SAnews.gov.za

SA, Ghana have great potential to unlock economic opportunities

SA, Ghana have great potential to unlock economic opportunities

President Cyril Ramaphosa says there is great potential to unlock economic opportunities through investment-led trade initiatives aimed at increasing the trade of value-added products between South Africa and Ghana.

“We need to move beyond trade in commodities and on to the purchase of job creating agricultural goods, and advanced manufactured and value-added products,” President Ramaphosa said.

Addressing the SA-Ghana Business Forum held at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand on Tuesday, President Ramaphosa said South Africa and Ghana share a long and rich history defined by the struggle for freedom.

“This history provides a firm foundation to forge closer economic ties that can spur growth and development in both countries,” President Ramaphosa said.

President Ramaphosa said South Africa is pleased to host the Business Forum to explore business opportunities that enhance bilateral economic relations.

Earlier in the day, President Ramaphosa and his Ghanaian counterpart, President Nana Akufo-Addo, reaffirmed the importance of nurturing of the existing historic relations and bonds of friendship between the two countries.

The two Heads of State emphasised that these relations are based on mutual partnership and solidarity, which date back to the struggle against apartheid and colonialism.

President Akufo-Addo is in South Africa on a working visit at the invitation of President Ramaphosa to co-chair the 2nd Session of the Bi-National Commission (BNC) between the two countries.

Tuesday’s BNC, which was held at the Department of International Relations offices in Pretoria, was preceded by a ministerial meeting on Monday,11 March. Meanwhile, a senior officials meeting was held on Friday, 8 March.

At the Business Forum, President Ramaphosa said Africa has been at the lower-end of global value chains.

"We have abundant natural resources, but limited productive capability to process them for higher value capture.

“However, the need for a global transition to a low-carbon future offers the continent new opportunities to upgrade and diversify into technology-intensive global value chains. Our two countries are in a strategic position to benefit from the rapid growth of key clean energy manufacturing industries.

“Most of the minerals critical for the manufacturing of clean energy technologies, such as battery storage and electric vehicles, are held in Africa,” President Ramaphosa said.

President Ramaphosa said there is a need to improve manufacturing capacity and scale up production and export through the building of domestic and regional linkages and value chains.

READ | SA, Ghana explore ways to expand trade and investment

“It is important to explore practical cooperation between key players in industry to foster effective and mutually beneficial collaboration between our countries to promote green industrialisation.

“This will help to build on the strong trade and investment links between our economies. South Africa is already the largest purchaser of Ghanaian exports in Africa, and the third largest importer of Ghana’s products globally,” the President said.

President Ramaphosa emphasised the need to move beyond trade in commodities and on to the purchase of job-creating agricultural goods, advanced manufactured and value-added products.

“The importance of Ghana to South Africa as an anchor partner country within West Africa is affirmed by the many South African trade missions to explore business opportunities in the form of investment-led trade,” he said.

The relationship between the Republic of South Africa and the Republic of Ghana has grown exponentially over the years.

Cooperation between the two countries has been elevated from a Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC) that is held at a Ministerial level to a Bi-National Commission, presided over by the two Heads of State and Government.

The Business Forum brought together companies and entrepreneurs from South Africa and Ghana with the aim of deepening trade and mutual investment and leveraging the opportunities created within the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Expanded trade and investment will stimulate growth and job creation in both countries and facilitate closer people-to-people interaction between the two nations. – SAnews.gov.za

Construction of new Western Cape police station on track

Location: News

Construction of new Western Cape police station on track

It is all systems go in the construction of more police stations in areas experiencing high crime volumes in the Western Cape.

The Ministry of Police says it is encouraged by the progress made by contractors who are currently building two police stations which are set to bolster policing and increase the footprint of the police in communities grappling with violent crime and gangsterism in Cape Town.

On Tuesday, the management of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Ministry of Police led by Minister General Bheki Cele, conducted monitoring and evaluation visits to the Makhaza and Tafelsig police stations which are currently under construction.

Progress is being made in the clearing of the site earmarked for the construction of the Tafelsig station which will bring police services closer to residents of Michelle’s Plain.

While there have been some delays in the commencement of construction at the Tafelsig police station due to the community’s demands to form part of the construction project, this has been resolved and contractors have agreed to source labour from the local community.

Meanwhile, the Ministry has welcomed the quick turn-around time in the building of the Makhaza police station which is now 97% complete. Upon completion, the station will better service the community of Khayelitsha.

“It has taken six months to complete the Makhaza police station and this is commendable and encourages us to do more to ensure policing services are not a ‘nice to have’ but are accessible to all.”

“We have been assured by contractors that the outstanding electricity and water connections on the site will be completed with[in] the coming weeks and the station can fully operate and service the community,” he said.

The Tafelsig and Makhaza stations alongside stations in Browns Farm and in Samora Machel, also in the Cape Flats of the Cape Town metropole, are expected to be completed and service communities by 2026. – SAnews.gov.za

Eliminate red tape to make it easier for African entrepreneurs to do business – Mashatile

Eliminate red tape to make it easier for African entrepreneurs to do business - Mashatile

Deputy President Paul Mashatile has called for the elimination of red tape to facilitate cross-border trade for African entrepreneurs.

“Countries on our continent typically perform poorly in various categories related to corporate performance and competitiveness due to an unfriendly environment, particularly in terms of intra-continental trade,” the Deputy President said on Wednesday.

This is the reason he believes that countries should take advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement, which seeks to eliminate barriers to trade in Africa.

READ | Africa is an oyster for young entrepreneurs

“The AfCFTA will significantly boost intra-African trade, particularly trade in value-added production and trade across all sectors of Africa’s economy,” Mashatile said.

The country’s second-in-command was delivering a keynote address at the Global Entrepreneurship Congress (GEC+ Africa) at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

GEC+ Africa is a gathering of entrepreneurs and leaders from more than 50 African nations committed to advancing entrepreneurial activity throughout their own countries in Africa.

Hosted by the Department of Small Business Development, the two-day event includes other international leaders who have become a part of the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN) movement that advances entrepreneurship as a means of building economies and expanding human welfare.

“As policymakers, we have to create an enabling environment for our entrepreneurs,” Mashatile said.

He told delegates that leaders should ensure that the core foundations of the digital economy are in place, including digital infrastructure, digital skills, cybersecurity capabilities, and affordable and accessible data.

Mashatile said nations need to do more to implement the African Union’s Digital Transformation Agenda, adopted at its Summit of Heads of State in 2019.

“We must ensure that by 2030, every individual, business, and government on the continent will be digitally enabled and ready to support a growing digital economy.”

He emphasised the need to enhance governance systems, such as combating corruption, improving macroeconomic management, and resolving disputes through negotiation rather than violent conflict.

“We must do more to shift the narrative that Africa is a difficult place to do business.”

SMMEs

Mashatile said it was crucial to address the Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMME) and start-up credit gap.

“Africa has 18% of the world’s population but attracts only 2% of global capital, and even less global venture capital for start-ups.

“In South Africa, Minister of Small Business Development Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams has proposed a SMME and Cooperative Funding Policy, which was recently gazetted for public comment,” he announced.

The policy requires that the Business Development Service providers in South Africa institutionalise the practice of assisting SMMEs and cooperatives with pre-funding support.

“Without funding, our best start-ups are leaving for tech hubs abroad,” Mashatile said.

Skilled labour force

The Deputy President believes it is crucial to retain skilled professionals within the continent’s borders.

“The loss of skilled professionals, also known as ‘brain-drain’ is one of the major reasons for the unsteady growth in our respective countries.

“To prevent this, we need to make it easier for skills to move across the continent and increase the number of people who can learn new skills, especially in areas that are important to the digital economy.”

However, he said South Africa was making inroads in reforming visa requirements, which allows high-tech expertise to work in the country and develop the economy.

“This move is supported by the underpinning principles of the AfCFTA, and propels us towards the integrated Africa that we want.”

In addition, the Deputy President called on the continent to work together to achieve socio-economic transformation that benefits everyone and one way to start is by assisting small businesses.

“Together, this and the AfCFTA are important steps towards the Africa we want. I am confident that this inaugural GEC+ Africa Congress will provide the appropriate policy advice and partnerships to take us there.”

Trade

The Deputy President has described Africa as a continent overflowing with untapped potential, a hub of innovation and invention waiting to be re-awakened.

“However, Africa still plays a subordinate role in global value chains, and is confronted by deeply established structural constraints that stem from our previous position as an exporter of unprocessed raw commodities.”

South Africa, like the rest of the continent, according to the Deputy President, needs to be strategic in increasing its competitiveness in higher-productivity trade-able commodities and services, as well as in becoming ready for a digital and environmentally friendly future.

“We must recognise that there is a link between the environment, economy, and agriculture. All economic activities either affect or are affected by natural and environmental resources.”

He also called on farmers to adapt to current farming methods that increase production efficiency.

“African innovators and entrepreneurs have the power to transform our economy, which will eventually allow us to participate in the global economy as players with equal status.” – SAnews.gov.za

SA must join forces to create youth employment, says Mashatile

SA must join forces to create youth employment, says Mashatile

Deputy President Paul Mashatile emphasised the need to strengthen multi-sectoral partnerships to increase opportunities for youth empowerment and participation in the labour market.

“Together, we can contribute to national efforts to create employment and get South Africans working,” he said on Tuesday.

Deputy President Mashatile was speaking at the National Council of Provinces during a question and answer session.

In 2020, he said Cabinet approved the National Youth Policy (NYP) 2030, which is a cross-sectoral policy intended to redress the injustices of the past and deal decisively with new challenges affecting the youth.

To reduce youth unemployment, the Deputy President said the Minister of Finance set aside R7.4 billion for the Presidential Employment Initiative for the 2024/25 financial year.

“Thus far, the Presidential Employment Initiative has assisted over 1.7 million people through a combination of job creation, job retention and income and skills support interventions," Mashatile said.

He also touched on the South African Employment Services System, which serves over seven million job seekers, and provides nationwide platforms for youth to register for employment, match with employment opportunities, and receive placement counselling.

Through public-private partnerships, government supports various internships, learnerships, and apprenticeship programmes across various government departments to provide experiential learning and facilitate entry into the labour market for young people.

By supporting the growth of Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs), he stated that government is playing a critical role in addressing South Africa’s youth unemployment crisis.

“Government is also implementing the Preferential Procurement Policy Framework Act to promote SMMEs that are key to job creation, and economic growth,” he added.

Agricultural land

Shifting his focus to agricultural land, he said government is accelerating land redistribution through a variety of instruments, such as land restitution and expropriation of land, to boost agricultural output.

In 2023, the Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure announced that 221 land parcels measuring 148 796 hectares have been released to the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development for transfer to the approved land claimants.

“Approximately 1 576 hectares of land is earmarked to be released before the end of this financial year,” he announced.

In addition, he said 125 land parcels, measuring 25 549 hectares of agricultural land were released to support subsistence farming and food security.

“This is in keeping with what we have been doing over the last 30 years,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the government is transferring State agricultural land, through Financial Assistance Land (FALA) properties, where there has been compliance with the rent-to-buy agreements.

On top of that, the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, he said, is developing criteria for category 3 and commercial farmers as part of the rollout plan for the release of state land.

“Category 3 includes medium to large-scale commercial farmers who have already been, or intend to farm commercially at various scales, but are disadvantaged by location, size of land, and other resource constraints limiting their growth,” the Deputy President explained.

As per the country’s second-in-command, the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure holds national State-owned land. It receives requests from the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development for releasing land to settle claims for restitution and agricultural purposes as part of the land reform programme.

“As a government, we will prioritise providing extension and technical support to ensure that we distribute properties that are productive and contribute to South Africa’s food security,” Mashatile said. – SAnews.gov.za

South Africa participates in UN commission on status of women

The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, is leading the South African delegation at the 68th Session of the United Nations (UN) Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68), currently underway at the UN headquarters in New York.

Taking place from 11 - 22 March, the largest annual gathering on gender equality and women’s empowerment is instrumental in promoting women’s rights and shaping global standards on gender equality and women empowerment.

The CSW68 takes place under the theme, 'Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective'.

“During the commission, South Africa will demonstrate its commitment to addressing poverty, inequality, unemployment and social exclusion based on gender, race, disability or geolocation, using the country’s Constitution as the cornerstone for human rights and equality, which are clearly articulated in the legislative framework,” the department said in a statement.

Reducing poverty and inequality has been an overriding concern of South Africa’s development since the advent of democracy in 1994, as articulated in the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) to the present National Development Plan Vision 2030 (NDP).

South Africa remains committed to addressing gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening our institutions so that all women and girls are empowered and enjoy their human rights, as stipulated in the country’s Constitution, which is the Bill of Rights.

The country is also committed to financing women and girls’ empowerment and achieving gender equality.

On Tuesday, Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu addressed the Commission during the high-level
Ministerial Roundtable on the theme, 'Mobilising Financing for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of all Women and Girls: Strategies to End Women’s and Girls’ Poverty'.

The discussions aimed to mobilise financing for gender equality and empower all women and girls, with a particular emphasis on policies and strategies to end poverty among women and girls. – SAnews.gov.za

On Tuesday, 11 March 2024, the Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Dr Ivan Meyer, and the Head of Department, Dr  Mogale Sebopetsa, welcomed 120 unemployed agricultural graduates as interns to the Department's Comprehensive Agricultural Support Programme (CASP). During the two-year internship graduates will be placed with farmers and sector stakeholders who will act as mentors and host employers.

The agricultural graduate intern programme will offer youth experience through work-integrated learning and support the establishment of youth-owned or managed enterprises, youth entrepreneurs, and other activities. This will encourage the active participation of youth in the agricultural sector to bridge the gap of ageing producers and reduce unemployment and poverty.

Minister Meyer said, “This programme places unemployed graduates with agriculture-related qualifications on farms and at enterprises within the agricultural value chain to acquire relevant on-the-job entrepreneurial and business skills to enable them to establish and manage their own enterprises.”
Minister Meyer and Dr Mogale urged the graduate interns to embrace the values of the Western Cape Government -  care, competence, accountability, integrity, innovation, and responsiveness.

Dr Sebopetsa commented, “You have joined an important sector of our economy. The Western Cape agriculture sector is responsible for 55% of South Africa's primary agricultural exports.  It is also the country's most important contributor to food security. As the next cohort of producers and entrepreneurs in the sector, we hope to expose you to the values and the practices that you need to be successful.”

Minister Meyer highlighted that the agricultural graduate intern programme allowed participants to unlock their potential within a thriving sector of the economy.
“Unleash your capability within this flourishing sector. Agriculture and agri-processing contribute 11% to the GDP of the  Western Cape. By the end of 2022, statistics highlighted that the agriculture sector employed 227 893 workers in the Western Cape, and the agri-processing sector employed  236 002 workers.

Combined, the sector contributed 426,417 jobs in the Western Cape.  This means that the agriculture sector employed 17% of the total number of people employed in the Western Cape.”
The key placement components of the agricultural graduate intern programme are:

  • Livestock rearing and poultry production;
  • Horticulture/crop production;
  • Aquaculture production;
  • Viticulture;
  • Agro-processing;
  • Agricultural Extension; and
  • Agricultural Economics

Minister Meyer said: “Education, Training and Research, and Farmer Support are two of my ministerial priorities. These are underpinned by the Western Cape Government's Growth for Jobs Strategy. Agriculture is a key sector of the Jobs for Growth Strategy.”

“Ultimately, we want to improve the employability of agricultural graduates through on-the-job experience at major agricultural host farms and entrepreneurial entities while at the same time, offering our producers additional support. Importantly, this programme is working to reduce unemployment and equipping our youth to become employers themselves,” concluded the Minister.

Transmission key component of stabilising power supply: Ramokgopa

Minister in the Presidency for Electricity, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, has reiterated the urgent need for the building of transmission lines to unlock thousands of megawatts for the grid from new generation capacity.

“The major problem is transmission issues. We need to modernise and expand transmission by over 14 000km. To put it into context, in the past 10 years, we only did 4 000km. So, this 14 000km is to enable new generation capacity [to connect to the grid].

“If we had sufficient transmission capacity in the Northern Cape, Eastern Cape and Western Cape, the grid would have the benefit of over 11 000MW,” the Minister said on Tuesday.

The Minister was speaking during a panel discussion at Ninety One’s annual Infrastructure Forum held in Johannesburg on Tuesday. Ninety One is a global asset manager with emerging market roots and a commitment to developing specialist investment teams.

Ramokgopa said the amount of renewable energy that can be released is “healthy” however, challenges persist.

“The pipeline is healthy, with over 66GW that is there. We have already identified the corridors that must be prioritised, and we know out of those corridors, we can get 2 300MW.

“The intervention really is less on the transmission lines and the pylons. It’s about increasing the size of the sub-stations. Once we do that, we know we can get the benefit of that 2 300MW,” he said.

Meanwhile, a statement issued earlier this month after President Cyril Ramaphosa convened a meeting with members of Cabinet and senior business leaders said the work underway within the National Energy Crisis Committee (NECOM) and the implementation of the Energy Action Plan is starting to bear fruit.

“Load shedding is down by 61% compared to the same period last year, with the return of units at Kusile power station, as well as new generation capacity from rooftop solar and private sector investment having a positive impact.

“Reform of the energy sector is progressing, with an independent board appointed for the National Transmission Company of South Africa (NTCSA) and preparations underway for the new entity to commence trading,” the statement said.

Load shedding

Meanwhile, Eskom has ramped up load shedding to Stage 3 during the evening and Stage 2 during the day.

“Due to the loss of three generating units and the delay in returning a further three generating units to service, Stage 3 load shedding will be implemented from 4pm today until 5am on Wednesday. Thereafter, Stage 2 load shedding will be implemented until 4pm.

“This alternating pattern… will be repeated daily until further notice. Eskom will closely monitor the power system and provide an update should any significant changes occur,” Eskom said. – SAnews.gov.za

SA, UK explore use of data to boost local economies

SA, UK explore use of data to boost local economies

The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) and National Treasury have invited the United Kingdom’s National Statistics (ONS) to participate in launching a community of practice to explore how local data can be used to support local economies.

The community of practice aims to generate new knowledge and facilitate the exchange of ideas about strengthening the economic performance of South African cities.

“The purpose is to widen the circle of researchers, policymakers and practitioners interested in the economy of cities by building a vibrant network of enthusiasts and experts,” the HSRC explained in a statement.

Following the launch of the Spatial Economic Activity Data – South Africa (SEAD-SA) in June 2023, there have been discussions between SEAD-SA and the HSRC’s Policy Action Network (PAN) project about sustaining and expanding the impact of this work among the policy and data community.

The two-day workshop, which is being held today and tomorrow, has since identified strategic objectives, which will be fleshed out during discussions.

The group will also discuss and share the best practices to effectively deliver local data insights, including administrative data.

They will look at alternative methods and techniques to measure local economies, especially where economic shocks are more likely, including the experiences and approach to using private sector data sources.

The event will also discuss options for training and skills transfer such as an online data masterclass to improve data awareness and literacy among senior leaders, exchange insights to identify user requirements, and deepen and widen the production of local economic data from tax data through the SEAD-SA portal.

The HSRC said the workshop is the culmination of a lengthy engagement between the South African government, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) based in South Africa and the ONS, which began in 2023 to explore opportunities to share expertise and provide technical assistance to the South African government.

The HSRC will host the workshop with the National Treasury, UK-FCDO, and their partners. These include the South African Revenue Service, the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research, Statistics South Africa, the South African Local Government Association, South African Cities Network, and the University of the Free State.

The HRSC explained that the SEAD-SA project aims to address the gaps that exist between the local economy of cities and the wider economic geography of the country by leveraging tax and other administrative data sources.

The data provide the government, business, and civil society with reliable evidence on which to base crucial developmental decisions.
