President Ramaphosa assents to bill promoting rail safety

President Cyril Ramaphosa has signed the Rail Safety Bill into law, ushering in a new era of enhanced regulation and safety standards for South Africa’s railway sector.

The legislation underscores the critical importance of safe railway operations for protecting lives, safeguarding the environment, and promoting rail as an efficient mode of transportation.

In a statement, the Presidency said the new law provides for the regulation of railway safety and for the continued existence of the Railway Safety Regulator.

“The law introduces railway safety permits as well as a national railway safety information and monitoring system.

“The law recognises that safe railway operations promote the use of rail as an efficient mode of transportation and that the effective provision of railway safety demands uniform policy, norms and standards,” the Presidency said.

The Rail Safety Bill assented to by the President replaces the National Railway Safety Regulator Act of 2002, which was last amended in 2009.

The updated legislation reflects significant changes in the railway sector, such as South Africa’s rolling stock investment programme and the adoption of the first standard gauge railway system.

Recognising the importance of regional integration, the new law aligns South Africa’s railway safety regime with the Southern African Development Community’s (SADC) goals for safe and harmonised railway operations. This move is expected to facilitate greater connectivity and collaboration within the region.

“This is a significant prerequisite for greater regional integration,” the Presidency said.

Key provisions of the Bill include:

  • Creating a national railway safety information and monitoring system.
  • Introducing railway safety permits.
  • Designed to create consistent policies, norms, and standards for railway safety.
  • Seeks to harmonise South Africa’s railway safety regulations with those of the Southern African Development Community.

The Presidency said by prioritising uniform policies, norms, and standards, the Rail Safety Bill positions rail as an important component of South Africa’s transportation system while addressing the demands of modernisation and regional integration. – SAnews.gov.za

Cabinet hopeful G20 hosting will boost local tourism

Cabinet hopeful G20 hosting will boost local tourism

South Africa is looking forward to a boost in its hospitality sector, as support staff and families of the Group of 20 (G20) member countries are expected to attend over 130 meetings in the Leaders’ Summit next year.

This is according to Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, who briefed the media on the outcomes of the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, 4 December 2024.

On 1 December 2024, South Africa officially assumed the G20 Presidency from Brazil, becoming the first African country to lead the premier forum with the theme of ‘Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability’.

“Hosting the G20 offers our nation an unprecedented opportunity to position South Africa as a global force for driving inclusive economic growth, employment, and reduced inequality in a sustainable manner,” Ntshavheni said.

The members of the G20 are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, the United Kingdom, the United States, the African Union and the European Union.

Ntshavheni said all provinces will benefit from hosting either the Ministerial or Working Group Meetings.

Following Brazil's example, Ntshavheni said South Africa will host the G20 Social Summit to encourage broader involvement of civil society and will introduce a new engagement group called, Township20 (TS20).

The Minister stated that the TS20 will showcase South Africa's township economies' creative, cultural, financial, and innovative strengths.

The initial meetings for South Africa's Presidency will include the first Sherpa and Finance Track meetings, scheduled from 9 to 12 December 2024 in Sandton.

The official website for South Africa's G20 Presidency was launched on Tuesday, featuring the King Protea as its logo. This national flower symbolises the country's identity, landscape, and cultural significance.

VIEW | G20 South Africa 2025

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO said the King Protea embodies resilience, cultural pride, hope, and natural beauty.

“The King Protea’s ability to regenerate after fires mirrors the country’s spirit of renewal and hope.

“The flower serves as a reminder that even in the darkest times, there is always a chance for new beginnings. Just like the people of South Africa, who have faced historical struggles and triumphs, King Protea stands tall even in adversity,” the department said.

Cabinet has invited potential sponsors to partner with government in supporting the G20 in South Africa.

Interested parties are encouraged to submit their expressions of interest to g20sponsorship@dirco.gov.za. The deadline is 31 March 2025. – SAnews.gov.za

Cabinet notes decline in GDP by 0.3% in third quarter of 2024

Location: News

Cabinet notes decline in GDP by 0.3% in third quarter of 2024

Despite the third quarter gross domestic product (GDP) decline, Cabinet has welcomed the positive economic outlook by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and rating agency Standard & Poor’s (S&P), as the impact of the implemented Operation Vulindlela coordinated reforms have started to bear fruit.

This is according to Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, who briefed the media on the outcomes of the Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday, 4 December.

S&P revised South Africa’s outlook to “positive” from “stable” in November this year, citing plans for accelerated economic reforms by the new government of national unity and a pickup in private investments.

Ntshavheni said Cabinet noted the decline in GDP by 0.3% in the third quarter of 2024, with the largest decline of 28.8% recorded in the agriculture, forestry and fishing, which may indicate the impact of drought.

Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) has indicated that the severe drought in 2024 caused a 0.3% decline in the country’s GDP in the third quarter.

Meanwhile, S&P also upgraded Eskom’s long-term global-scale foreign and local currency ratings from stable to positive, which indicates the progress made by government in strengthening Eskom’s financial and operational foundation through the work of the National Energy Crisis Committee (NECOM), the Eskom Board and Executive team.

“Cabinet further welcomed the decision by the South African Reserve Bank to cut the repo rate by another 25 basis points from 8% to 7.75%," said Ntshavheni.

The Executive believes that the lower interest rate will continue to ease the burden on highly indebted consumers and mitigate the high cost of living, while also encouraging businesses to expand their operations to further stimulate economic activity.

Investment

Cabinet has welcomed the announcement by Saudi Arabia to invest R9.5 billion to build a platinum smelter and base metals refinery in the Waterberg in Limpopo.

“This new investment is a strong vote of confidence in our nation and builds on the first phase of our investment mobilisation drive under the sixth administration that saw our nation surpass its investment target by 26% to reach a total of R1.51 trillion in investment pledges,” said Ntshavheni.

The Minister said South Africa is now targeting R2 trillion in new investments over another five years between 2023 and 2028.

SAA

In addition, the Executive has commended South African Airways’ (SAA) strong performance, highlighting the airline’s significant progress towards financial sustainability.

“For the first time since 2012, the SAA has recorded a net profit of R252 million for the 2022/23 financial year, and group revenue increased from R2 billion to R5.7 billion.

“Remarkably, SAA achieved this milestone while operating with only six to eight aircraft across nine destinations at the beginning of the 2022/23 financial year,” Ntshavheni said, adding that the airline has since doubled its fleet, launched intercontinental routes, and increased its network to 16 destinations. – SAnews.gov.za

The Evolution of Party Sound: How LG’s XBOOM Redefines Audio Excellence

Location: Business
LG Electronics

By Carol Guedes, Consumer Electronics Head of Sales at LG Electronics South Africa (www.LG.com/global/).

Have you ever felt the floor shake beneath your feet at a concert? That's the kind of experience LG's XBOOM range of party speakers aims to bring to your living room, braai, or wherever the party takes you. These aren't your average speakers—they're sonic powerhouses designed to make every gathering unforgettable.

Take the flagship XL9T model (http://apo-opa.co/3VmNahG). With its dual 8-inch woofers, it doesn't just play bass—it launches it. You don't just hear the low frequencies; you feel them in your chest. But here's the clever bit: LG's Dynamic Bass Optimiser ensures that even when you're not trying to wake the neighbours, you still get that rich, full sound. It's like having a sound engineer built into your speaker.

Beyond the traditional: A new era of audio

Traditional Bluetooth speakers often struggle balancing power and clarity, especially at high volumes. The XBOOM range shatters these limitations. Its advanced audio engineering maintains crystal-clear sound even when you're pushing the volume to its limits. Whether you're hosting an intimate gathering or a full-blown block party, XBOOM delivers a level of audio quality that sets a new standard for portable speakers.

The XBOOM range is all about mobility. From the compact XBOOM Go XG8T (http://apo-opa.co/4g4MtSD) that fits in your backpack to the wheeled XL7S (http://apo-opa.co/4g0hYNA) that rolls like your favourite carry-on, these speakers are ready to move when you are. But portability means nothing if your speaker conks out mid-party. That's where the XBOOM's impressive battery life comes in. With up to 20 hours of playtime on some models, these speakers have more stamina than your average party-goer.

Weather or not: Speakers that brave the elements

Are you caught in a sudden downpour at your beach party? No worries. Many XBOOM models sport an IPX4 rating, shrugging off water like a duck. The XG8T takes it up a notch with an IP67 rating—it laughs in the face of dust and can handle a quick dunk in the pool. This level of durability is a significant upgrade, allowing you to take your music anywhere without fear of damaging your investment.

More than meets the ear: A visual feast

XBOOM speakers don't just appeal to your ears—they're eye candy too. The XL9T's Pixel LED Lighting turns it into a miniature Times Square billboard. Display patterns, visual EQ effects, or even personalised messages. Coupled with Multi Colour Ring Lighting, it's like having your own light show. This visual element transforms the XBOOM from a mere audio device into the centrepiece of your entertainment setup.

LG recently put the XBOOM range through its paces at the Boom Boom Festa. Street performers from nine countries reinterpreted the iconic “Boom Boom Pow” through XBOOM speakers. From the vibrant streets of Rio to bustling urban centres worldwide, these speakers proved they could deliver crystal-clear audio in any setting.

Redefining the party speaker landscape

The XBOOM range isn't just another entry in the crowded field of portable speakers—it's a paradigm shift. By combining unparalleled sound quality, rugged durability, and eye-catching visual effects, XBOOM is redefining what consumers expect from a party speaker.

Gone are the days when portable meant compromising on sound quality. The XBOOM range (http://apo-opa.co/4gjRsyr) proves you can have concert-level audio in a package that moves with you. Its ability to withstand the elements means your music isn't confined to the safety of indoor spaces. And with its impressive battery life, the party keeps going long after other speakers have called it a night.

The visual aspects of the XBOOM range point to a future where speakers are not just heard, but seen and interacted with. This fusion of audio and visual technology hints at a new era of immersive home entertainment, where your speaker is as much a conversation piece as a sound system.

In an age where the line between professional and consumer audio gear is blurring, the XBOOM range stands tall. It's not just a speaker; it's a statement. The future of party audio isn't just here—it's loud, it's proud, and it's ready to get the party started. With XBOOM, LG isn't just keeping up with audio trends—it's setting them, paving the way for a future where our expectations of what a speaker can do are constantly being exceeded.

SA- Nigeria conclude successful Bi-National Commission

President Cyril Ramaphosa and his Nigerian counterpart, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, have paid tribute to the existing deep fraternal relations between the two nations.

In a joint communique on the 11th session of the South Africa - Nigeria Bi-National Commission on Tuesday, the two Heads of State and Government once more acknowledged the strong support that Nigeria provided to the liberation movements in South Africa during South Africa’s struggle for freedom and democracy.

President Tinubu was in South Africa for a working visit at the invitation of President Ramaphosa to co-chair the 11th Session of the Bi-National Commission (BNC) between the two countries.

The BNC was preceded by a meeting of Senior Officials on 28 and 29 November 2024 and the Ministers Meeting on 02 December 2024.

READ | SA eyes increased trade relations with Nigeria

The 11th Session of the BNC also marked the 30th anniversary of formal establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

“The two Heads of State and Government renewed their commitment to work closely to broaden and sustain the two nations’ bilateral relationship in a manner that enhances strategic cooperation and partnership for mutual benefit. In this regard, the Heads of State and Government directed the various Ministries, Departments and Agencies to deepen their cooperation in the context of the BNC,” the joint communique read.

The Heads of State and Government acknowledged the more than 34 Agreements covering various sectors which have been signed since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1994.

“The two leaders underscored the need to urgently finalise the MoU [Memorandum of Understanding] on the Early Warning Mechanism. To this end, it was agreed that the MoU will be signed, no later than March 2025, during the visit of the South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation to Nigeria, for Political Consultations.

“The two leaders also welcomed the ongoing negotiations to conclude other new agreements,” the communique said.

Investment

The Heads of State also welcomed the high levels of economic cooperation between the two countries. In this regard, they welcomed the significant investments of South African companies in Nigeria and encouraged corresponding Nigerian investments in the South African economy.

The leaders recognised the need for the two countries to create an enabling business environment in both countries.
“The two leaders agreed to encourage cooperation and partnership between private and public entities for investment in mining, infrastructure development in rail, road, ports, amongst others. In this regard Nigeria invited South Africa’s Development Finance Institutions to partner with Nigeria in co-financing infrastructure projects,” the communique read.

The leaders further made a commitment to work towards increased and balanced trade between the two countries by utilising the opportunities provided by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Both South Africa and Nigeria have ratified the AfCFTA.

Addressing mutual challenges

The two countries also agree to collaborate on programmes that address mutual challenges in food and nutrition security, strengthening meaningful digital connectivity, taking leadership in the development of artificial intelligence, expanding digital literacy initiatives, as well as prioritising data protection and online safety for all citizens.

The two leaders welcomed the convening of the South Africa-Nigeria business roundtable held on the margins of the 11th session of the BNC during which they had an opportunity to address and engage with Chief Executives of companies from both countries.

“The Heads of State and Government also exchanged views on regional, continental and global issues of mutual concern. Nigeria highlighted its efforts and those of ECOWAS [Economic Community of West African States] in fostering and promoting peace and security in West Africa. South Africa also outlined efforts undertaken by the Southern African Development Community [SADC] in supporting peace initiatives in both the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and northern Mozambique”.

The delegations also underscored the need to redouble efforts to realise the African Union (AU) Agenda 2063 Aspiration to “Silence the Guns”.

In this regard, the Heads of State and Government expressed concern at the devastating conflict in Sudan, which has resulted in the loss of lives, destruction of infrastructure and property and a humanitarian crisis.

The Heads of State and Government also reflected on the upcoming elections for the leadership of the African Union Commission and underscored the need for the election of the leadership that would be responsive to the challenges facing the African continent.

International developments

“The two countries further exchanged views on international developments, particularly the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and called for a ceasefire in Gaza and increased access to humanitarian aid.

“The Heads of State and Government reiterated their principled position that the only long-lasting solution to the resolution of the conflict, is to advance a two-State solution where Israel will exist side by side in peace and harmony with a viable and fully independent Palestinian State. Nigeria commended South Africa for taking the case of Israel and Palestine to the International Court of Justice,” the communique read.

Kaspersky Predicts AI and Privacy to Shape Consumer Cybersecurity Landscape in 2025

Location: Business
Kaspersky

According to Kaspersky's (www.Kaspersky.co.za) latest report, artificial intelligence (AI) will become an integral part of daily life, while privacy concerns around biometric data and advanced technologies will take center stage in 2025. These forecasts are part of the annual Kaspersky Security Bulletin series, which provides an outlook on the cybersecurity trends and threats expected to impact consumers in the coming year.

AI becomes an everyday reality

AI is predicted to fully integrate into daily life in 2025, becoming a standard tool rather than a novel technology. With prominent operating systems like iOS and Android rolling out AI-enhanced features, people will increasingly rely on AI for communication, workflows, and creative tasks. However, this normalisation also brings challenges, particularly as personalised deepfakes become increasingly sophisticated in the absence of reliable detection tools.

Privacy regulations will expand user data ownership

The growing emphasis on privacy is expected to lead to new regulations that strengthen user control over personal data. By 2025, individuals may gain the right to monetise their data, transfer it easily across platforms, and benefit from simplified consent processes. Global frameworks, such as the EU's GDPR, California's CPRA and South Africa's POPIA, continue to inspire reforms worldwide, while decentralised storage technologies could further strengthen user autonomy over their information.

Fraudsters will continue to exploit premieres and releases

Cybercriminals are expected to target prominent gaming, console, and film launches in 2025. Titles like Mafia: The Old Country, Civilization VII, and Death Stranding 2, as well as the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2, are likely to attract scams involving fake pre-orders, counterfeit rootkits, and malicious downloads. Similarly, blockbuster films like Superman and Jurassic World Rebirth may trigger phishing campaigns and counterfeit merchandise fraud aimed at enthusiastic fanbases.

Political polarisation will fuel cyberbullying

Increasing political polarisation is expected to exacerbate cyberbullying in 2025. Social media algorithms that amplify divisive content, combined with the widespread availability of AI tools for creating deepfakes and doctored posts, are likely to intensify online harassment. Cross-border cyberbullying could also escalate as global platforms facilitate the targeting of individuals based on their political beliefs.

Rising number of subscription services will fuel fraud risks

As the global economy shifts further towards subscription-based models, a rise in fraud related to fake subscription promotions is expected. Cybercriminals are expected to create counterfeit services that mimic legitimate platforms, aiming to deceive users into providing personal and financial information, resulting in identity theft and financial losses. Additionally, the growth of unofficial resources that provide discounted or free access to subscription services is expected to become a significant threat vector, exposing users to phishing attacks, malware, and data breaches.

Prohibition of social media for children may lead to broader user restrictions

Australia's proposed legislation to ban social media access for children under 16 could set a global precedent. If implemented successfully, the restriction could pave the way for broader limitations on access for other demographics. Platforms like Instagram have already begun adopting AI-powered age-verification systems, signaling a shift toward stricter governance of online spaces.

“As we look to 2025, the most significant impact on consumers is expected to arise from the intersection of innovation and regulation. Advances in AI, privacy protection, and data ownership frameworks will reshape the way people interact with technology and manage their digital lives. These developments hold immense potential but also demand careful oversight to ensure they serve consumer interests,” said Anna Larkina, Kaspersky privacy expert.

To stay safe, Kaspersky experts also recommend:

  • Enable a safe browsing feature, such as the one in Kaspersky Premium (https://apo-opa.co/3BdtgPp), to help avoid Internet tracking. This feature also protects users from dangerous sites (like phishing ones), malware, and other maliciously installed files and extensions.
  • Configure your social networks for enhanced privacy to make a difference. Services such as Privacy Checker (https://Privacy.Kaspersky.com) can help users adjust privacy settings and strengthen the protection of their personal accounts. In addition, modern security solutions often include features that enhance privacy levels across various social networks.
  • Opt for secure and private connections. Avoid using public Wi-Fi networks for sensitive activities. Consider using a reliable VPN (https://apo-opa.co/3Bcqz0y) to encrypt your Internet connection and protect your online activities from being monitored.
  • Install apps only from official stores like the Apple App Store, Google Play or the Amazon Appstore. Although apps from these markets are not 100 percent failsafe, at least they are checked by store representatives, and a filtration system is in place - not every app is authorised for listing on these platforms.
  • Download a reliable security solution (https://apo-opa.co/3BdtgPp) to help you detect malicious apps and adware before they can harm your device.
  • Don't share serial numbers, IP addresses and other sensitive information regarding your smart devices on social networks.
  • Avoid using unreliable passwords. Weak combinations, such as those consisting of letters only, do not offer sufficient protection. For added convenience and security, consider using a special app, such as the Kaspersky Password Manager (https://apo-opa.co/3OGpYHu).

Relief and hope as Social Development brings critical services to East London

Relief and hope as Social Development brings critical services to East London

The Department of Social Development (DSD) has brought vital services to citizens in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality by setting up a temporary service point during the Berlin November horse racing festival, which was recently held in the Eastern Cape.

Mother of four, Pamoria Mayengane, 48, is one of the residents who could not contain her joy after receiving the help she urgently needed from the DSD. Mayengane had been struggling for months with the suspension of her Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant due to fraud activity, which impacted her.

The weight of uncertainty had taken a toll on Mayengane, but that changed when she heard on the radio that the DSD would be bringing its services to Berlin, a small, yet vibrant town in East London, in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality.

The annual Berlin November event draws thousands of visitors from across South Africa, providing a unique platform for government departments and corporate organisations to showcase their services and promote social cohesion.

Mayengane, who lives within walking distance of the Berlin racecourse, seized the opportunity to reach out to the DSD.

“I was so happy when I heard the announcement [on the radio]. I did not even have to pay for transport. I walked from my house to the venue. It was such a relief to finally be assisted,” she said.

The SRD grant, coupled with child support grants for her two younger children, is the lifeline for her family. The fraudulent attempt to access her SRD grant had left her unable to receive payments, plunging her into financial stress.

With the South African Social Security Agency's new face verification system in place, the fraudulent individual was blocked, and the payment was stopped.

At the Berlin temporary service point, officials helped Mayengane to resolve the issue, ensuring that her grant would be reinstated for the next payment cycle.

“This grant means everything to me. It helps me buy groceries and cover my children’s basic needs. Now I can look forward to buying them Christmas groceries, just like other families,” she said.

Berlin, nestled between East London and King William’s Town, is a historical town that has maintained its charm, while growing into a hub of cultural activity. The Berlin November horse racing function, in particular, has become a major drawcard, blending tradition with entertainment.

This year, the DSD used the function as a platform to bring its services closer to the people, addressing pressing social challenges and fostering community engagement during the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign.

In addition to assisting residents like Mayengane, the DSD and other participating stakeholders provided information and support on various issues, including social grants, child protection, substance abuse, non-profit organisations and community development.

This initiative exemplified the department’s commitment to addressing social issues in a holistic and accessible way. – SAnews.gov.za

Dr Bongi Owusu calls for unity and action in dealing with GBVF

Dr Bongi Owusu calls for unity and action in dealing with GBVF

As the country observes the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign, the Director of the Department of Social Development, Dr Bongi Owusu, has called for unity and action in dealing with this scourge.

South Africa faces a dire gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) crisis, with alarming statistics highlighting the urgent need for collective action to address this “second pandemic.”

Owusu, the Director of Gender and Women Empowerment at the department, said when President Cyril Ramaphosa described GBV as South Africa’s “second pandemic" at the time of the COVID-19 outbreak, he emphasised the severity of this national crisis.

“He called on everyone to unite in eradicating the scourge of GBV, a plague that transcends gender, sexual orientation and social status, demanding a concerted response from all sectors of society,” Owusu said.

She highlighted the importance of reflecting on what solidarity truly means in this struggle.

“True solidarity involves everyone -- men, women, children and marginalised communities, standing together against GBV,” she asserted.

Owusu further stressed the need to dismantle harmful gender stereotypes that perpetuate violence and marginalisation. In many communities, she said, women are still treated as minors, with their voices dismissed solely because of their gender.

While women remain the primary victims of GBV, Owusu advocated for an inclusive approach to tackling GBVF. In the same breath, she underscored the importance of recognising that violence is not confined to one gender.

“We must acknowledge that there are women who perpetrate violence and men who are survivors. Comprehensive interventions must reflect this reality, recognising the diverse forms and experiences of GBV,” she said.

A critical step in combating GBV lies in dismantling toxic masculinity. Owusu noted that society often reinforces harmful ideals by discouraging men from expressing vulnerability.

“When boys are told, ‘men don’t cry’, it fosters emotional repression and disconnection, which can manifest in harmful behaviours. Women - whether as mothers, sisters or partners - can help by affirming that it is okay for men to express their emotions. This simple shift can break cycles of violence and foster healthier, more empathetic relationships,” she emphasised.

South Africa’s GBV statistics remain deeply troubling. According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), over 120 women were raped daily between April and June 2023, and a woman is murdered every three hours in the country. These figures are grim reminders that the majority of GBV victims are still women and children.

Owusu highlighted the importance of engaging men as allies in the fight against GBV.

“It is crucial to involve men as positive partners in this battle. This approach not only challenges the narrative that all men are perpetrators but also encourages men to take a stand and say, ‘Not in my name’. Engaging men as active participants can inspire a new generation of boys to value respect, empathy and non-violence,” she said.

Owusu emphasised the role of the community and its leaders, including religious and traditional figures, as gatekeepers of societal norms. However, she lamented that some perpetuate harmful ideologies.

“Faith-based organisations must challenge practices that victimise women and condone abuse. Traditional leaders and their spouses... have a unique role in shaping young minds. For example, boys can learn respectful masculinity, while girls are guided towards self-empowerment,” Owusu explained.

The fight against GBV demands courage, collaboration and a commitment to challenging harmful norms. It calls for a society that rejects stereotypes, promotes inclusivity, and holds perpetrators accountable.

Owusu’s plea is straightforward: a collective commitment to eradicating GBV must begin in homes, workplaces and communities.

“Ending GBV is not the responsibility of a few but the duty of all. By fostering partnerships across gender, faith, and cultural lines, South Africa can become a beacon of hope -- a society where no one suffers in silence, and everyone is empowered to thrive,” Owusu said as the 16 Days of Activism campaign continues. – SAnews.gov.za

G20 Presidency to establish three dedicated task forces

G20 Presidency to establish three dedicated task forces

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that South Africa’s G20 Presidency will pursue progress on cross-cutting issues through the establishment of three dedicated task forces.

Speaking during the launch of the G20 Presidency on Tuesday, President Ramaphosa said the first task force is on Inclusive Economic Growth, Industrialisation, Employment and Reduced Inequality.

The second task force is on Food Security, while the third task force is on Artificial Intelligence, Data Governance and Innovation for Sustainable Development.

WATCH |

“It is critical for South Africa that the G20 remains focused on its core responsibilities to address global economic and financial challenges. It should not replace existing international institutions and platforms, such as the United Nations and associated bodies.

“At the same time, G20 initiatives should support, not diminish, the responsibilities that countries have to deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals, climate action and other commitments,” the President said.

To ensure that the G20 remains focused, the President said that South Africa will not create any new working groups or permanent structures.

“We will build on previous presidencies and provide momentum to existing structures and processes. We will reflect on the impact of the G20 over the last 20 years and positioning it to enhance its impact over the next 20-year cycle,” he said.

The President emphasised that it is important for South Africa that its G20 Presidency is inclusive.

“Dialogue with civil society and other non-government institutions will be conducted through various engagement groups. These engagement groups are organised according to sectors, such as business, labour, civil society, parliamentary bodies and the judiciary.

“These engagement groups also include science bodies, think tanks, and audit institutions, as well as institutions of higher learning, specific groups for women and youth including vulnerable groups,” he said.

President Ramaphosa said the nation also intends to support the creation of a new engagement group, Township20 (TS20), to spotlight the potential of South Africa’s township economies.

“This will highlight the creative, cultural, financial and innovative capacities that our own country has to give when it comes to small and medium enterprises as well as cooperatives and how these operate in rural areas as well as townships where our people live,” he said.

Following Brazil’s example, South Africa will host a G20 Social Forum, amplifying the voices of civil society, women, youth and vulnerable groups.

“South Africa firmly believes that civil society serves as a bridge between the G20 leaders and the people who have the greatest interest in their deliberations,” the President affirmed.

Looking ahead to the Leaders’ Summit

The G20 Presidency will culminate in the Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg in November 2025, where world leaders will adopt a declaration outlining collective actions to address critical global challenges.

With over 130 meetings planned across all provinces, and thousands of delegates expected, the G20 Presidency presents an opportunity to showcase South Africa’s potential and hospitality.

“The G20 Presidency is an opportunity to present to the world the great opportunities and experiences that South Africa has to offer. We look forward to welcoming our friends and partners to our beautiful country,” the President said.

South Africa assumed the Presidency of the G20 on 1 December 2024, marking a historic milestone as the first African country to lead this influential group of the world’s largest economies.

This Presidency is not only a significant moment for South Africa but also for the African continent and the Global South, amplifying their voices on the global stage, while advancing shared goals of economic growth, sustainability and equality. – SAnews.gov.za

Lesotho Highlands Water Project Tunnel maintenance on schedule

Lesotho Highlands Water Project Tunnel maintenance on schedule

The Department of Water and Sanitation has reassured that the ongoing maintenance, repair and refurbishment of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) Tunnel is on schedule.

Maintenance operations started on 1 October 2024 and are scheduled to be completed within six months.

READ | Government commends progress made in Lesotho Highlands Water Project maintenance

The Trans Caledon Tunnel Authority (TCTA) is responsible for the maintenance work in South Africa, while Lesotho Highlands Development Agency (LHDA) is focusing on the transfer tunnels at the Muela hydro power station in Lesotho.

The department said it is monitoring the progress of the maintenance repair work and is satisfied that the project will be completed within the scheduled time.

“The department is also monitoring water supply to communities under the local municipalities of Dihlabeng, Nketoane and Mafube, which are along the Liebenbergsvlei River and Wilge River. These municipalities benefit directly from the Lesotho Highlands Water Project and have adversely been affected since the tunnel closure.

“Some towns in Setsoto and Mantsopa municipalities in the Free State normally abstract water from the Caledon River, while others abstract from the Vaal and Rhenoster rivers. These municipalities benefit indirectly from the LHWP, and the department is also monitoring water supply to communities within these municipalities,” the department said.

The department has embarked on relief intervention programmes for the municipalities. It is also upgrading water treatment works, raw water pumps and abstraction works. The department is constructing new reservoirs, as well as developing groundwater resources by drilling and equipping boreholes.

“All of these projects are underway and are critical in ensuring sustainable water supply to communities during the tunnel system shutdown.

"Municipalities had to implement water restrictions, especially to regulate irrigation in their area of operation for the duration of the closure,” the department said.

The department has also gazetted water usage by farmers in the area from 1 October 2024 until 31 March 2025, which stipulates that water users on the left bank of the Ash and Liebenbergsvlei rivers may abstract water for agricultural purposes from 6am to 6am on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

On the right bank of the Ash and Liebenbergsvlei rivers, abstraction of water may be from 6am to 6am on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

The left bank of the river is defined as the left side of a person, when the person looks at the direction that the water is flowing in.

The department said the restrictions are necessary to ensure that there is enough water during the closure of the tunnel.

“The department, together with the affected municipalities continues to engage with the communities through public education programmes, with the aim of encouraging responsible water usage and water conservation, particularly during the time of a tunnel closure,” the department said. – SAnews.gov.za

G20 South Africa website goes live

G20 South Africa website goes live

South Africa’s Group of Twenty (G20) Presidency website is officially live with the national flower- the King Protea – as the logo which reflects the country's identity, landscape, and cultural significance.

This as South Africans are invited to visit www.G20.org for everything they need to know about the country’s G20 Presidency, media events and calendar meetings.

The G20 Presidency website, fully responsive and linking to social media, showcases South Africa's provinces and serves as a resource for G20 information. The website is legally protected under international agreements.

Speaking at the G20 Presidency launch and the chosen logo, the President shared his delight at the fact that the country gets to showcase not only the nation but also one of its most cherished symbols, the Protea cynaroides.

“It is a real joy and pleasure for us as South Africa to launch the work we will undertake as the President of the G20, particularly as we will be showcasing not only our country but also one of the key symbols of our country the Protea cynaroides, which is a scientific name of the Protea which is also called the King Protea.

“It’s a distinctive member of the protea and it is the largest, as it is also known as the giant protea, the honey pot the part I like most and also the King sugar bush and it is widely distributed in our country generally,” the President said on Tuesday.

The President launched South Africa’s G20 Presidency two days after the country assumed the Presidency, marking a historic milestone as the first African country to lead this influential group of the world’s largest economies.

Acting Chief of State Protocol at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), Clayson Monyela, detailed the development of the South African G20 logo with the King Protea, symbolising resilience and hope, as a central element.
The logo incorporates the South African flag's colours and a semi-circular design to represent unity and global collaboration.
Monyela explained that they went through a process to look at what would inform the logo.

He stated that the requirements for developing the logo included ensuring it reflected the country's identity. Additionally, the logo needed to highlight the nation's scenic beauty and its potential as a preferred destination for tourism and investment.
He further emphasised that the logo should represent the country as a thriving democracy and a multicultural, diverse nation.

Pride and identity

It was also essential for the logo to align with the G20 South Africa Presidency theme of “solidarity, equality, and sustainability.”
“Some of the key elements of the South Africa G20 logo include the national flower, the King Protea. The cultural significance of the King Protea, which is the national flower, is that one, it is intertwined with South African culture. Secondly, it's crown like petals evoke pride and identity. It also represents hope and regeneration.

“You would know this that it regenerates after fires, symbolising renewing and hope. It also reflects our country's resilience in overcoming hardships. It is a reminder of growth and new beginnings, even during adversity. Of course, it's a flower, so it's naturally beautiful. It is striking and captures attention and represents the breathtaking South African landscape,” Monyela said.

He added that the logo symbolises South Africa's intention to deliver a positive and solution driven G20 Presidency.

“The other thing you'll notice is that it's semi-circular; the same secular design of our logo symbolises unity, inclusion and global collaboration,” he said.

The G20 Presidency will culminate in the Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg in November 2025, where world leaders will adopt a declaration outlining collective actions to address critical global challenges.
