UNIDO and Japan Highlight Longstanding Partnership for and With Africa at Special Event

The Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) jointly hosted the “UNIDO-Japan partnership for Africa” event at the Vienna International Centre this week. Held in the framework of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), it showcased achievements through a week-long panel exhibition and a series of thematic discussions. 

An opening ceremony on 17 March 2025 in the Rotunda featured remarks by UNIDO Director General Gerd Müller (via video message) and the co-host, Ambassador Atsushi Kaifu of Japan. Ambassador Maimounata Ouattara of Burkina Faso, Chairperson of the African Group in Vienna and UNIDO Deputy to the Director General and Managing Director Yuko Yasunaga also provided opening remarks. A musical performance by the My Heart String Quartet Hiroshima accompanied the ceremony. 

In his video statement, Director General Müller underscored the strength of the partnership between UNIDO and Japan, noting, “UNIDO and Japan together address poverty and hunger, advance climate action and foster a circular economy. We create jobs and livelihoods around the world, offering perspectives for the future”. Ambassador Kaifu of Japan underscored the significance of the year 2025, as the TICAD 9 Summit will be held this August in Yokohama, Japan. He expressed the hope that “this week's event provides an opportunity to explore innovative solutions for Africa and serves as a significant milestone in advancing the TICAD process”.

Ambassador Ouattara reaffirmed the importance of the UNIDO-Japan partnership with Africa stating that it “played a transformative role in promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization across our continent”. She further highlighted that “this partnership has contributed to economic growth, job creation and the adoption of sustainable practices that empower Africa industries and communities”. Deputy to the Director General Yuko Yasunaga highlighted UNIDO's ongoing commitment to supporting Africa's industrial development and acknowledged Japan's significant financial contributions. 

The opening ceremony included the presentation of newly funded projects in Ethiopia, Nigeria, Sudan, the United Republic of Tanzania, and a regional project (Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia). Following the opening ceremony, a reception provided attendees with networking opportunities, while discussions continued in informative sessions.  

The first session was a presentation on the activities of the UNIDO Investment and Technology Promotion Office (ITPO) Tokyo in Africa, by Fumio Adachi, Head of ITPO Tokyo. The session informed about seminars and events, the delegate programme and African business advisors programme of the ITPO in Tokyo, as well as its Sustainable Technology Promotion Platform (STePP) and Global South programme. 

Another session focused on plastic circular economy initiatives and challenges in Japan and Africa. Government representatives from seven African countries —Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and the United Republic of Tanzania— discussed efforts to address plastic pollution through circular economy approaches. The discussion underscored how Africa's increasing plastic consumption, driven by population growth and urbanization, can benefit from sustainable waste management solutions. 

A seminar on UNIDO's data-based lean manufacturing showcased the success story of the digital tool “U-SPARK” (UNIDO smart performance analytics for real-time Kaizen) which helps enhance enterprise performance management in Ghana's food processing sector. UNIDO is now working with the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) to expand the initiative across the continent. 

Throughout the week, the results of the UNIDO-Japan cooperation in Africa were on display in a panel exhibition, showcasing our work in Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Morocco, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, South Africa, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, and Zambia, as well as the activities of ITPO Tokyo. 

Through the week-long event, UNIDO and Japan reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing industrial development in Africa.

Presidential Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya has, on Thursday, briefed the media on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s programme for the upcoming weeks.

The following are some of the engagements the President will be undertaking:

•    The inauguration of Namibia’s President elect, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah on Friday, 21 March.
•    President Ramaphosa will address the Water and Sanitation Indaba kicking off on 27 March.
•    On the same day, 27 March, President Ramaphosa will receive letters of credence from Heads of Mission from some 14 countries.
•    The President will deliver the keynote address at the Women Economic Assembly on March 28.
•    On 3 April, President Ramaphosa will receive an official visit from Zambia President Hakainde Hichilema.
•    On 9 April, the President will open and deliver an address at the three-day Police Summit.
•    Also on 9 April, he will tour the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and will be taken through the institute’s flagship programmes. Following that, President Ramaphosa will join the conference of the International Association of Women Judges.

Deputy President Sipokosa Paulus Mashatile has successfully concluded his working visit to Japan aimed at reaffirming the strong cooperation between South Africa and Japan in areas of mutual interest. 

As the two countries mark 115 years of well established diplomatic relations, the year 2025 also marks a special milestone, with both countries chairing important multilateral organisations – South Africa's Presidency of the G20 and the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD-9) Summit led by Japan.

During the working visit, the Deputy President met with Japanese Government officials, including paying a courtesy call on His Excellency Mr Ishiba Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan and Chief Cabinet Secretary Mr Yoshimasa Hayashi.

The Deputy President expressed his appreciation for Japan's support for South Africa's Presidency of the G20 and looked forward to collaborating with Japan to ensure that TICAD-9 is a success.

“Since 1993, Japan has been hosting TICAD, which focuses on Japan's support of African development through public and private support of initiatives aimed at peace and stability, and growth in the private sector, infrastructure, human resources, climate change, and education. Indeed, South Africa and Africa have a reliable and respectable ally in Japan,” said the Deputy President.

The Deputy President also met with the Japan-African Union Parliamentary Freindship League with the aim of strengthening bilateral relations and parliamentary cooperation between South Africa and Japan.

The meeting emphasized the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in promoting mutual understanding and cooperation and highlighted the importance of the Japan-African Union Parliamentary Friendship League in fostering stronger ties between Japan and African countries. 

The Deputy President also had an opportunity to engage with the representatives of the Japanese business community which included Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) and Japan Organisation for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), Keidenran and the Association of the African Economy and Development in Japan Committee (AFRECO), with the objective of promoting trade, investment and economic cooperation between the two countries.

During these engagements, the Deputy President highlighted South Africa's favourable business environment, skilled workforce and strategic location, making it an attractive destination for Japanese investment.

Addressing concerns raised by the Japanese business community, the Deputy President reported on progress made in reducing the backlog and fast racking visa applications, government's commitment to ending loadshedding and ensuring safety for citizens and investors.

The Deputy President is confident that these engagements will yield positive results, further strengthening the partnership between the two countries.

“As this delegation goes back to South Africa, we have a collective mandate to bring to life some of the discussions and agreements that we have had with our counterparts and other stakeholders here. We are motivated and will do everything it takes to make sure another 115 years, with sustainable economic, cultural and people-to-people benefits for the people of both our countries.” said Deputy President Mashatile.

The Deputy President was supported by the Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ms Thandi Moraka; the Minister of Sport, Arts & Culture, Mr Gayton McKenzie; the Minister of Higher Education, Dr Nobuhle Nkabane; the Minister of Agriculture Mr John Steenhuisen; the Minister of Trade Industry and Competition, Mr Parks Tau; and the Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Ms Nomalungelo Gina.

SA gears up for Water Investment Summit

Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina is set to host the preparatory meeting for the African Union-Africa Water Investment Programme (AU-AIP) Water Investment Summit 2025.

The meeting is scheduled to take place on the sidelines of the International Water Association (IWA) Congress, currently underway in Cape Town.

The department said the preparatory meeting, to take place on Thursday, is a critical step towards the AU-AIP Water Investment Summit, scheduled to take place at Cape Town in August.

“The summit aims to mobilise at least USD 30 billion annually for climate-resilient water and sanitation initiatives across Africa, aligning with South Africa’s G20 Presidency priorities on economic growth, climate sustainability, and enhanced financing for development,” the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) said on Wednesday.

The preparatory meeting will bring together key stakeholders, including government representatives, international development agencies, private sector investors, and civil society organisations, to refine the objectives, thematic areas, and expected outcomes of the summit scheduled for August.

“The meeting will also serve as a platform to consolidate bilateral partnerships and secure commitments. Additionally, it will ensure that the summit aligns with South Africa’s G20 Presidency goals and effectively contributes to water security and investment mobilisation in Africa,” the department said.

Among the delegates expected to participate at the summit, include:
•    Jakaya Kikwete, former President of the United Republic of Tanzania, chair of the Global Water Partnership Southern Africa (GWPSA), and co-chair of the Africa Water Investment Panel, which includes sitting and former Presidents and eminent leaders (President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa is also a member of the AIP Panel).
•   Arif Alkalali, General Supervisor of the General Directorate for Water Resources in the Ministry of Water, Environment, and Agriculture, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
•    Anxious Jongwe Masuka, Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Water, and Rural Resettlement, Zimbabwe.
•    Collins Nzovu, Minister of Water Development and Sanitation, Republic of Zambia.

On March 18, Mr. FUJII Hisayuki, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, hosted a dinner with the Honourable Mr. Paul Mashatile, Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa, who is visiting Japan upon the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The overview of the dinner is as follows.

  1. At the outset, State Minister Fujii welcomed Deputy Minister Mashatile's first visit to Japan, and expressed his wish to work closely with South Africa both bilaterally and internationally for the success of TICAD 9 and the G20 Johannesburg Summit to be held this year.
  2. In response, Deputy President Machatile thanked the Japanese side for the hospitality and welcomed the further deepening of the Japan-South Africa cooperation.

Unlocking Opportunities for a Climate-Resilient Future

The African Development Bank Group (www.AfDB.org) participated in the third edition of the Africa's Green Economy Summit (AGES) (https://apo-opa.co/4izmWCf) in Cape Town, South Africa, from 18 – 21 February, 2025.

The annual Summit, hosted by the African Union, brought together policy makers, stakeholders, private sector and experts who discussed Africa's green transition and the urgent need for increased investment in climate resilience. The conference was held under the theme, “Building a Climate Resilient Africa: Catalysing Investment and Innovation in the Green and Blue Economies”. Discussions over the four days cut across five key areas: climate finance, biodiversity and nature, green reforms, resilient cities and green industrialisation.

With its vast renewable energy potential, abundance of critical minerals essential for the global energy transition, and a growing commitment to climate-smart solutions, Africa is very well placed to lead the way toward sustainable global growth. As it navigates a path towards fully realizing these boundless possibilities, against the backdrop of mounting climate challenges, there is increasing focus on the urgency of resource mobilization.

Dr. Anthony Nyong, Director of Climate Change and Green Growth at the African Development Bank and keynote speaker at the summit's opening ceremony, touched on this in his remarks. Affirming that “Africa has enormous opportunities to lead global efforts to transition to a green economy”, he added that, “To build a climate-resilient Africa, adaptation must be at the heart of our strategies. While global climate finance continues to prioritize mitigation efforts, adaptation remains significantly underfunded, receiving less than 10 percent of total climate finance flows.”

Calling for a tripling of Africa's climate finance flows and green investments, and for the right partnerships to underpin the financing, Nyong concluded that “Together, we can build an Africa that thrives in harmony with nature.”

A “platinum sponsor” for the summit, the Bank featured in a range of activities, discussions and roundtables, consistently demonstrating its leadership role in supporting Africa's countries transition to climate resilience and low carbon development, as articulated in the its Climate Change and Green Growth Framework 2021 – 2030.

Harsen Nyambe, Director of Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment at the African Union, emphasized the summit's role as “a vital link between global capital and sustainable projects on the continent.”

Barbara Buchner, Global Managing Director of Climate Policy Initiative, stressed the critical need for private sector engagement, highlighting that existing funding amounts to only about 23 percent of Africa's estimated climate finance needs, while only 18 percent of the continent's climate finance is from the private sector – a figure “much lower than in other regions.”

Maxwell Gomera, South Africa Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme, highlighted another key issue: “We've sent people to the moon, yet we still haven't solved the challenge of clean cooking. This is a business problem.”

“For the African Development Bank, driving green growth in Africa comes with challenges but also significant opportunities. In this regard, AGES presents a unique platform to spotlight Africa as a land of green economic opportunities in a range of sectors such as renewable energy, critical minerals, climate-smart agriculture, green cities, low-carbon and climate-resilient infrastructure, among others,” said Al Hamndou Dorsouma, Manager of Climate and Green Growth at the African Development Bank.

On Tuesday, 18 February, the Bank Group hosted a Masterclass on Carbon Markets in Africa, explored how carbon markets are becoming more stable and attractive for growth, and offering new opportunities for market entry and project development.

By leveraging platforms like AGES, Africa can strengthen partnerships, unlock funding, and implement policies that drive a sustainable and resilient future. With targeted investments and bold commitments, the continent has the potential to lead the way in shaping a low-carbon, climate-smart economy that benefits both its people and the planet.

Local procurement drives progressive change and creates jobs

Local procurement is more than a policy instrument, it is a strategic lever that drives progressive change, creates jobs and ensures that belief in South African talent and resilience translates into tangible economic growth. 

This is according to Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic) Acting Director-General, Dr Malebo Mabitje-Thompson, who was speaking at the 13th annual Proudly South African Buy Local Summit and Exhibition, currently underway in Sandton, Johannesburg.

Speaking on behalf of Trade, Industry and Competition Minister, Parks Tau, Mabitje-Thompson underscored the critical role of local procurement in South Africa’s economic development and the need for a resilient domestic industry.

Reflecting on the Proudly South African campaign’s 24-year history, Mabitje-Thompson emphasised that buying local strengthens South Africa’s manufacturing sector and enhances the country’s ability to compete globally.

“We need to embrace local procurement for economic empowerment. Local procurement is more than a policy instrument, it is a strategic lever that drives progressive change, creates jobs, and ensures that our belief in South Africans' talent and resilience translates into tangible economic growth,” said Mabitje-Thompson.

She further emphasised the importance of ensuring that government agencies align with local procurement legislation, as demonstrated by entities such as Transnet, which have committed to investing in South African enterprises.

“When we procure locally, we bolster our economy and enhance its resilience. In a world where global supply chains are increasingly uncertain, it is vital that we can rely on our industries to supply our critical needs. 

“Local procurement is not about shutting out foreign markets, rather, it is about creating a foundation for sustainable economic growth that benefits all,” she said.

Mabitje-Thompson encouraged stakeholders to actively engage in discussions on policies that support industrial growth, including master plans, tariff measures and initiatives to combat illegal imports. 

She reiterated that while incentives and industrial financing play an essential role, they cannot replace the fundamental need for a strong and reliable domestic market.

The Buy Local Summit and Exhibition remains a pivotal platform for businesses, governments, and consumers to collaborate in fostering a thriving local economy.

Invest in ECD to shape the next generation, says President

President Cyril Ramaphosa has advocated for universal access to Early Childhood Development (ECD) to ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive by the age of five.

The President was delivering remarks at the official opening of the Bana Pele 2030 Roadmap Leadership Summit at Atlas studios, in Johannesburg. 

“Universal childhood development should have started 30 years ago…We are all here today because of our shared belief in the profound importance of Bana Pele – putting children first. 

“It is because of this shared vision that we unite and collaborate today, committed to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive by the age of five,” the President said on Monday.

The President told the summit that government’s immediate focus is to extend access to early childhood development to every child calling it one of the most powerful tools for unlocking the nation's potential.

He emphasised that ECD extends beyond education, it is a key driver of economic growth.

“We recognise today that investing in ECD is not just about education. It is about shaping the next generation of skilled, capable and entrepreneurial citizens who will drive our economy forward. 

“Investing in ECD yields significant economic returns. Studies have shown that every rand spent on early childhood education can save up to seven rands in future costs associated with remedial education, social services and criminal justice,” the President said.

He highlighted that early childhood development provides children with the foundational skills they need to build a successful future. It further helps break the cycle of poverty that is handed down from one generation to the next.  

“Early childhood development is about giving children from all backgrounds the opportunity to grow into confident, capable citizens who contribute positively to society. Children who receive a strong start are more likely to succeed in school and the workforce, reducing societal costs in areas such healthcare, crime prevention and welfare,” the President said. 

A research report published to coincide with Brazil’s G20 Presidency, estimated that in South Africa, an investment of 2.1% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in universal childcare could have supported 10.5 million women to join the workforce over three years. 

Because of the profound effect that ECD can have on social well-being and development, the President said government had decided to put the country’s children first. 
 

Last week, the Minister of Finance announced an additional investment of R10 billion in ECD over the next three years.

The President referred to the statistic that 80% of children in South Africa are unable to read for meaning by the age of 10. He emphasised that early childhood development was critical for developing foundational skills such as language, literacy and numeracy.

President Ramaphosa added that the experiences and interactions children have can significantly influence their future learning potential.

“This is why ECD must be treated as an urgent priority. We therefore welcome this wonderful initiative for business, civil society and government to work together to shape the future of early childhood development.

“This initiative will assist the strategic reorientation of the basic education sector to strengthen foundation learning. The benefits of universal access to ECD extend beyond the education of the child. It helps to empower families to break free from the effects of poverty."

President Ramaphosa called on all ECD programmes to register with the Department of Basic Education so that all children can receive the start in life that they need and deserve.

He noted that the ripple effects of a robust ECD system are felt across generations, fostering a cycle of opportunity and growth.
“We are determined that every child, regardless of their background or location, must have access to quality early education. It is for this reason that the Department of Basic Education launched the Bana Pele Mass Registration Drive last year,” he said.

The President said that the Mass Registration Drive was an example of cross-sectoral collaboration at work. He added that the country has an opportunity to rethink and restructure the entire ECD landscape, making it more effective, more inclusive and more impactful than ever before.

“As South Africans, we have a clear goal for all our children: access to quality learning opportunities for an additional 1.3 million children by 2030. This is why we are here today.

“We need to create a collaborative framework for ECD. One that brings together government, business, donors, ECD workers and all other social partners,” he said.

He said this framework must ensure that all role-players work together at both the provincial and municipal levels to improve access to quality early childhood education.

“As we move forward, we must remember that there is no greater cause than uniting for the benefit of our children. Our future as a nation depends on the children we raise today. We must commit to creating an environment where every child, no matter where they come from, has the opportunity to learn, to grow and to succeed.

“Let us join hands and work together, as a united force, to achieve our shared vision of universal access to quality early childhood development,” the President said. – SAnews.gov.za

SA-EU Summit a 'watershed' moment for trade and investment relations

The 8th South Africa-European Union (EU) Summit held in Cape Town last week was a “watershed” moment for trade and investment relations between South Africa and the regional bloc.

This is according to President Cyril Ramaphosa who reflected on the summit in his weekly newsletter on Monday.

“As a bloc, the European Union (EU) is one of South Africa’s largest trading partners and the source of much investment in our country. Our economic ties with European countries go back to colonial times. Since the advent of democracy 30 years ago, we have steadily been growing the volume and value of trade.

“This summit will be remembered as a watershed moment in the development of our trade and investment relations. While expanding our traditional areas of cooperation, we are now focused on working together to develop the industries of the future,” the President said.

He stated that South Africa and the EU agreed to work together towards a Clean Trade and Investment Partnership.

“This partnership will support the development of value chains that are more environmentally sustainable. It will make South Africa and the EU more competitive in a low-carbon global economy by improving conditions for investment in the extraction and local beneficiation of rare minerals, renewable energy, low carbon hydrogen and clean technology.

“This partnership will improve cooperation between South Africa and the EU on some of the regulatory issues that constrain greater levels of trade. This work should enable South African companies to export products like sustainable fuel and electric and hybrid vehicles to the EU,” he said.

A key outcome of the SA-EU Summit was an announcement of a €4.7 billion (approximately R90 billion) investment package aimed at supporting investment projects in the country.

According to the President, the package will “include grants and loans from European financial institutions and businesses”.

“Among other things, this investment will be used to build South Africa’s vaccine production capacity and boost local pharmaceutical value chains. 

“The package will also support South Africa’s just energy transition through the development of critical raw minerals and low carbon hydrogen. In addition to investments in transport and digital infrastructure, the package will provide resources for skills development,” President Ramaphosa said.

On the global stage

The summit also reaffirmed the “unwavering commitment of South Africa and the EU to multilateralism, the consistent application of international law and the centrality of the United Nations Charter”.

“We agreed that a collective effort was needed by all countries to overcome global challenges such as climate change, pandemics, rising inequality and conflict.

“The EU shares South Africa’s view that the UN Security Council needs to be reformed so that it is more inclusive, efficient and democratic. In its composition and actions, the Security Council needs to better reflect the realities of today’s world. We also agreed to strengthen efforts to safeguard and advance human rights across the world,” he said.

Furthermore, the EU expressed its support for South Africa’s G20 Presidency this year and welcomed the country’s “focus on forging partnerships between G20 members and other African countries”.

The President said the two parties agreed that collective global effort is needed to overcome current global challenges. 

“We share similar views on how to navigate these difficult times, by standing together to uphold the principles of the UN Charter, to adhere to international law and to strengthen the institutions of global cooperation.

“Above all, we are committed to the mutual well-being and development of the peoples of South Africa and all the member states of the European Union. We have a shared vision of the future and we are determined to work together to achieve it,” President Ramaphosa concluded. – SAnews.gov.za

President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Monday officially open the Bana Pele Early Childhood Development (ECD) Leadership Summit at the Atlas Studios, in Johannesburg.

The summit, convened by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA), aims to mobilise a public and private coalition behind the DBE’s 2030 ECD Roadmap for quality, universal access to early learning.

In a statement on Saturday, The Presidency noted that in South Africa, more than 1.3 million children are not enrolled in any form of ECD programme, leaving them without the foundational literacy and numeracy skills required to succeed in school.

“This learning gap affects their ability to take on critical subjects, such as Mathematics, Science, Accounting, and Economics in later years, which are the skills that are vital for innovation, economic growth, and job creation,” the Presidency said.

The summit will bring together government, business, civil society and education experts to “construct a roadmap for universal access to quality ECD across the country.

Amidst the changing global landscape, European Council President António Costa has emphasised the importance of the strategic partnership between South Africa and European Union (EU).

Addressing the opening of the 8th South Africa-European Union (SA-EU) Summit, Costa said the EU and South Africa are not just partners but are strategic allies, bound by shared values of democracy, human rights, rule of law and multilateralism.

“The world has changed profoundly in these past seven years. Pandemics, conflicts here in Africa, in the Middle East, and in Europe. Multilateral commitments are being tested, and the rules-based international order faces growing challenges. 

“Protectionism, economic coercion, and other threats undermine stability, while new technologies disrupt the political system and global power dynamics. In this world of uncertainty, our partnership matters more than ever.

“Let us use this summit to deepen our cooperation, reinforce our commitments, and chart a course for an even stronger partnership. A partnership that not only benefits our nations but contributes to global stability and prosperity – for our citizens, for our nations, and for our shared future,” Costa said on Thursday.

President Cyril Ramaphosa co-chaired the summit with Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Dr. Ursula von der Leyen, at Tuynhuys, in Cape Town.

Costa said the European Union does not see the future through the lens of division between blocks, between the North and South. 

“Instead, we see an interconnected world, where our fates are linked, and where joint action is not an option but a necessity. Our partnership delivers real benefits to our citizens, our economies, and the world.

“We are united in our commitment to peace, security, and sustainable development. We stand together to help uphold the United Nations Charter, advance the sustainable development goals, and drive towards global action on climate change, poverty reduction, and economic reform. 

“We appreciate South Africa’s leadership, both regionally and globally. You can count on the European Union’s full support as you take on the G20 Presidency and as we prepare together for the next European Union-African Union summit, later this year,” Costa said.  

With this year being the 25th anniversary of EU-African Union cooperation, Costa said this is a milestone that underscores the strength of engagement, and the vast potential ahead. 

“Despite many complex challenges, this is not a time for despair. It is a time for opportunity. An opportunity to build, to strengthen, and to expand our bilateral and multilateral cooperation. To shape a world that is fairer, more sustainable, and more secure,” he said.

In his address, President Ramaphosa said South Africa intends to hold further constructive discussions on a new investment package by the EU, to South Africa.

South Africa’s world-renowned Narrative Therapist and Psychosocial Specialist, Ncazelo Mlilo, has been nominated in the prestigious Women Changing the World Awards.

The awards, according to a statement by psychosocial organisation, Phola, are like the Grammy Awards for recognising women across the world who are doing incredible work, making a positive difference in various industries and areas, including business, sustainability, leadership, health, education, product development, innovation, and technology.

Mlilo, who is based in Johannesburg, has been selected for two categories, the People’s Choice Award for Non-Profit and Social Enterprise, and the Women in Therapy and Counselling Services Award.

This recognition celebrates the groundbreaking work in mental health, her development of Afrocentric, culturally sensitive narrative-based methodologies, and her dedication to empowering communities worldwide.

The awards ceremony will take place during a summit in London, in the United Kingdom on 2-3 April 2025.

Mlilo has over 25 years’ experience in trauma counselling.

She has worked with children, youth, women, families, and communities to address the effects of HIV/AIDS, gender-based violence (GBV), poverty, conflict, and other hardships.

Mlilo co-created the Tree of Life (ToL) Methodology, currently used in over 60 countries including the USA, Brazil, Australia, Canada, Iran, India, Germany, Japan, Sweden, and across Africa.

She has developed other methodologies like COURRAGE, the Narratives in the Suitcase Project, O.U.T.R.R.A.G.E.D. for GBV prevention.

Mlilo trains over 1 000 mental health practitioners worldwide every year, with her work reaching an estimated 100 000 people, annually.

She is also a prominent keynote speaker at international conferences, including the Trust’s Collective Narrative Practices Conference, held in 2024 in Australia, the Narrative Therapy Centre Conference, where she spoke about the Narratives in the Suitcase, held in Australia in 2023, among others.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has welcomed the European Union’s €4.7 billion Global Gateway Investment Package aimed at supporting strategic investment projects.

The President was speaking during a press briefing following the 8th South Africa-European Union Summit held in Cape Town on Thursday.

The package is aimed at supporting:
•    A clean and just energy transition in South Africa
•    Digital and physical connectivity infrastructure
•    The local pharmaceutical industry.

“The investment package covers areas such as critical raw mineral processing, green hydrogen, renewable energy, transport and digital infrastructure, local vaccine and pharmaceutical production, and resources for skills development.

“To boost the competitiveness of our economies, we agreed to launch negotiations towards a Clean Trade and Investment Partnership. This will support the development of cleaner value chains for raw materials and local beneficiation, renewable and low carbon energy, and clean technology,” President Ramaphosa said.

Furthermore, the partnership will also serve as a platform for “regulatory cooperation between the European Union and South Africa in areas of mutual interest related to clean supply chains”.

“This partnership is expected, for example, to deliver short and long term solutions to enable Sasol to export sustainable fuel, especially aviation fuel, to the European Union,” the President added.

Strengthening ties

President Ramaphosa noted that the summit – the first such held in seven years – reflects mutual commitment to “enhancing our Strategic Partnership for the mutual benefit of our people”.

As a regional bloc, the European Union (EU) is South Africa’s biggest trading partner recording some €49.5 billion in total trade in 2023 with EU foreign direct investment into South Africa reaching around €71 billion in 2022.

“Today’s Summit focused on strengthening our trade and investment relations, which are vital for the growth of our economies and the achievement of our development goals,” the President noted.

Discussions also focussed on other areas including green energy, science and health.

“We have prioritised the transition to green energy, ensuring that this process is just and inclusive and safeguards the livelihoods of those most affected by the transition. We also had discussions on our robust cooperation in education; science, technology and innovation; and health.

“We have recognised the vital importance of developing the skills and capabilities of young people, starting from early childhood development through to the training of young people in the skills of the future,” President Ramaphosa explained.

Global developments 

On the global stage, President Ramaphosa said, “we reaffirmed our commitment to multilateralism, the rule of law and the central role of the United Nations in maintaining global peace and security”.

“We also expressed our resolve to resist actions that undermine multilateral cooperation. We reinforced our belief that the institutions of global governance must be reformed to make them representative and fit for purpose. 

“We agreed that addressing the root causes of conflict is essential for achieving durable peace, security and stability in Africa.”

Turning to the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), President Ramaphosa said South Africa calls on parties to assist in addressing the “dire situation of the people” caught in the blaze of the war.

“As South Africa, we have made a call for a humanitarian intervention for displaced people in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. 

“As we work to achieve a ceasefire and achieve a peaceful resolution of the conflict in the DRC, we are calling on the United Nations, African Union and EU to help to address the dire situation of the people affected by the fighting,” he said.
Reflecting on the outcomes of the Summit, President Ramaphosa described it as having further strengthened the strategic partnership.

“Today’s Summit has further strengthened our Strategic Partnership, which will support our efforts to drive inclusive economic growth, create jobs, eradicate poverty and address global challenges in a spirit of solidarity, collaboration and partnership.

“On behalf of the Government and people of South Africa, it has been a pleasure to host you today, reaffirming our commitment to building strong, mutually beneficial relations with the European Union,” President Ramaphosa concluded. 

In his opening remarks at the summit, the President said that as one of South Africa’s most important trade and investment partners, the European Union can play a catalytic role in unleashing the productive capacity of our economy and equip our people, especially the youth, to participate in the economy of the future.

SA focuses on improving diplomatic relations with United States

Deputy President Paul Mashatile says South Africa is working on stabilising relations with the United States of America (USA), given the long-standing ties between the two nations.

Addressing the 7th BizNews Conference (BNC#7) at the Hermanus Municipal Auditorium in the Western Cape, on Thursday, the Deputy President said this partnership is also significant to South Africa's economic development goals.

The BizNews Conference is an annual event focused on investment, business and political issues.

The Deputy President emphasised the need for collaborative efforts, in light of recent cuts to key health funding programmes, such as the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

PEPFAR was established by former President George W Bush in 2003 and continued under various administrations.

“The withdrawal of PEPFAR funding highlights the urgent need for South Africa to further strengthen its own interventions to reach the most vulnerable and access health services and support," Mashatile said.

He said the opportunity showed the importance of bolstering the country's own healthcare interventions and ensuring the delivery of health services without heavy reliance on external assistance.

"In this regard, we have been investing heavily in healthcare reform and responding to the dual epidemics of HIV/AIDS and TB. The Department of Health has put measures in place to ensure that patients receiving TB and HIV treatment are not affected and do not default," said the Deputy President.

Mashatile encouraged stakeholders to unite and support government in promoting South Africa's interests in the United States, including through mechanisms such as the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).

"The loss of AGOA benefits would have the most devastating effect on South African farmers and agriculture workers. AGOA is presently providing support to South Africa's agriculture and manufacturing sectors, which is expected to generate around $21 billion in trade with the United States.

“Therefore, our position is that South Africa should maintain strong bilateral relations with the United States. Most importantly, as a country, we are committed to improving mutually beneficial trade, political, and diplomatic relations with the United States,” he said. 

Diversifying export markets and growing the economy

The country’s second-in-command stated that South Africa should push for diversified export markets, citing ongoing engagement with global powers such as China, Russia, India, and various European countries. 

President Cyril Ramaphosa is currently co-chairing the EU-South Africa Summit, which aims to deepen relations with the European Union (EU) across several domains, including trade, security, and sustainable development.

In addition, Mashatile highlighted the importance of intra-African trade and financial cooperation through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). 

According to the Deputy President, the AfCFTA is a crucial step toward reducing dependency on volatile global markets.

Mashatile believes that South Africa’s wealth of natural resources, including significant agricultural potential, is positioned as an attraction for investment. 

He said government is committed to removing blockages to economic growth, lifting economic expansion to above 3% in the medium-term, and creating a cycle of investment, growth and jobs.

He outlined government’s plans to focus on improving productivity and innovating skills development through the National Digital and Future Skills Strategy as part of a broader vision for a knowledge-based economy.

Furthermore, he said the newly approved Reconceptualised Human Resource Development Strategy outlines priority goals aimed at enhancing early education outcomes, increasing youth employability, and ensuring that higher education aligns with market demands. 

FATF grey list

The Deputy President said South Africa is making steady progress in efforts to be removed from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list.

"Through new legislation, we have strengthened our ability to prevent money laundering and fraud, and secure South Africa’s removal from the grey list of the Financial Action Task Force."

He said the country has addressed 20 of the 22 action items relating to combating money laundering and terrorist financing. 

“These improvements are essential not only to remove ourselves from the grey list but also to strengthen the battle against crime and corruption, which is crucial for the betterment of all South Africans. 

“We will continue to resolve both remaining action items by June, towards our removal from the grey list by October 2025,” he said.

Moreover, the Deputy President committed that South Africa will use its Group of 20 (G20) Presidency to place Africa’s development at the top of the agenda. – SAnews.gov.za

President Ramaphosa engages EU on new investment package

With the 8th South Africa-European Union (SA-EU) Summit underway, President Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa intends to hold further constructive discussions on a new investment package by the EU, to South Africa.

“Through this we aim to consolidate cooperation in areas such as science and technology, education and skills development, climate action, peace and security, health and critical minerals,” the President said on Thursday.

This as he is co-chairing the summit with the President of the European Council, António Luís Santos da Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Dr. Ursula von der Leyen, at Tuynhuys, in Cape Town.

Held in the Western Cape, the 8th Summit takes place within the framework of the Strategic Partnership between South Africa and the European Union. 

“As one of South Africa’s most important trade and investment partners, the European Union can play a catalytic role in unleashing the productive capacity of our economy and equip our people, especially the youth, to participate in the economy of the future. 

“We hope we can continue to rely on the support of the European Union and its member states in our efforts to alleviate poverty, transition to a low-carbon economy, invest in climate-resilient infrastructure and grow our industrial capacity,” the President explained.

In addition, the President welcomed the EU’s support for multilateral institutions and the fundamental principles of the United Nations.

“This Summit is taking place at a time of global uncertainty characterised by rising unilateralism, economic nationalism and a retreat from international law and human rights.

“We hope to work closely with the European Union and other partners to strengthen and reform institutions of global governance to make them more inclusive and capable of meeting the challenges of the present and the future. 

We should collectively strengthen our voice in defence of human rights, democracy and the rule of law, including respect for international law and international humanitarian law. We welcome the support of the European Union for Africa’s developmental needs.”

Partnership

He emphasised that African relations with the European Union should be built on a mutually beneficial partnership in the spirit of shared ownership, responsibility, respect and mutual accountability. 

“Today we will discuss our shared interest to advance peace, security, stability and sustainable development on the continent and across the world. This Summit affirms our long-standing and close relationship, which is underpinned by the South Africa-European Union Strategic Partnership. 

“This is a partnership based on shared values and common interests. A partnership that seeks to create prosperity for our citizens and promote peace, safety and stability.

“We share a commitment to inclusive multilateralism as the most effective means to address the most pressing challenges facing the world.  We agree on the need to strengthen economic cooperation and resolve challenges in our trade relations,” the President said.

Reforms 

He mentioned that South Africa is forging ahead with far-reaching structural reforms to support economic recovery. 

“We are modernising and transforming key industries such as energy, water, transport and digital communications. We have already made considerable progress, supported by institutions such as the European Investment Bank. 

“These reforms are contributing to the improvement of the country’s competitiveness and investment environment,” the President said.

Summit to boost small enterprise development in KZN

Business leaders, entrepreneurs and government officials in KwaZulu-Natal are currently engaging on critical issues impacting small enterprises across the province.

These role players are gathered at the 2025 Umyezane Summit, Conference and Awards, which is taking place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre and hosted by the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA).

Addressing the opening of the summit on Monday, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli emphasised the pivotal role played by small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) in driving economic transformation and creating jobs within the province.

“The growth of SMMEs is central to building a resilient and inclusive economy. Through initiatives like the Umyezane Summit, we aim to empower small businesses, strengthen township and rural economies, and ensure that historically disadvantaged entrepreneurs are given meaningful opportunities to thrive,” Ntuli said.

He highlighted the provincial government’s commitment to fostering an enabling environment for entrepreneurs by addressing barriers including crime, access to funding, and market opportunities.

The summit and accompanying awards reflect the provincial government’s vision of fostering a thriving, inclusive economy driven by small enterprises.

Ntuli assured entrepreneurs that KwaZulu-Natal remains committed to policy reforms, financial support, and capacity-building programmes that will position SMMEs as key drivers of economic growth.

EDTEA MEC Musa Zondi noted the importance of public-private partnerships in unlocking economic opportunities for SMMEs.

“We must remove red tape, foster innovation and create sustainable pathways for small businesses to succeed in both local and global markets,” Zondi said.

The summit features panel discussions, policy dialogues, and networking sessions, where stakeholders engaged on topics including:

•    Crime and business security – Addressing the impact of crime on small businesses and strategies to enhance security.
•    Regulatory and policy compliance – Simplifying business registration and licensing processes.
•    Revitalising township and rural economies – Exploring innovative approaches to support businesses in historically underserved areas.
•    Access to funding and market opportunities – Strengthening financial support mechanisms for SMMEs.
•    The Black Industrialists Programme – Accelerating transformation by expanding support for Black-owned enterprises in key sectors.

Recognising excellence in entrepreneurship

During the award ceremony on Monday, Ntuli commended the recipients for their dedication and contribution to economic development, reaffirming government’s ongoing support for the province’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

The awards celebrated outstanding entrepreneurs, who have demonstrated resilience, innovation, and business excellence in KwaZulu-Natal, including youth and women-owned businesses, rural enterprises, and emerging industrialists.

International Relations and Cooperation Deputy Minister Thandi Moraka says South Africa’s G20 Presidency is aimed at ensuring resource-rich nations and communities in places like Limpopo can benefit equitably from their mineral wealth.

“In the midst of global geopolitical tensions and rising protectionist, South Africa’s G20 Presidency will champion cooperation, collaboration and partnerships between individuals, groups, peoples and nations,” Moraka said.

Speaking at the G20 Community Outreach event at the University of Venda in Limpopo today, Moraka said strengthening partnerships and expanding dialogue with a wide range of actors is important to collectively shape the G20’s approach to issues requiring international cooperation.

“South Africa will therefore also host a G20 Social Summit, prior to the Leaders’ Summit, by expanding outreach to communities beyond the 13 official G20 Engagement Groups,” Moraka said.

Moraka said during South Africa’s Presidency, there will be more than 85 in-person meetings throughout the country, including five meetings in Limpopo.

“We encourage the people of Limpopo to become more involved in these processes. We have been asked, and rightfully so, what benefits does the G20 Presidency brings to South Africa

“Tens of thousands of delegates and support staff from some of the world’s largest developed and developing economies are expected to arrive in South Africa over the year-long Presidency. 

“In addition to many Ministers, the Heads of State and Government of more than 40 countries will attend the Leaders’ Summit in November 2025,” the Deputy Minister said.

Moraka said the G20 Presidency was without a doubt a mammoth task, requiring considerable personnel and resources, by most accounts, this was the largest national project that South Africa has ever undertaken.

“This project is expected to have significant economic benefits for South Africa, notably for the tourism, transport, restaurant, entertainment and hospitality industries, with global visibility in all nine provinces.

“There is also significant opportunity for South African provinces and cities to promote their cultural, heritage, tourism and innovation, but also an opportunity to demonstrate South Africa’s technological, industrial and commercial advances across various sectors,” Moraka said.

A number of direct and indirect jobs are expected to be created during South Africa’s G20 Presidency.

“It therefore goes without saying that the support of all South Africans in telling a good story and highlighting our successes is critical if we are to leave a permanent G20 legacy for South Africa, and the whole of the African continent.  

“It is important for us all to work in synergy and in cooperation and partnership, more so in a fractured world filled with conflict and destruction. As much as we are excited to host the first G20 Presidency on the African continent, we are also cognisant of the enormous task that is before us,” the Deputy Minister said.

Also speaking at the same event, Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba said she was delighted to welcome esteemed members of the diplomatic corps, government officials, business leaders and all distinguished guests to the historic occasion, the first-ever G20 community outreach to be held in the province.

Ramathuba said the engagement was an opportunity to strengthen ties, advance collaboration and ensure that global economic policies translate into meaningful opportunities for local communities.

“It is also a symbolic gesture, a recognition of the role that provinces like Limpopo play in shaping the broader economic landscape of South Africa and the African continent,” the Premier said.

As the only African nation represented in the G20, South Africa carries a profound responsibility in ensuring that the voices of developing economies, particularly those in Africa, are heard on the global stage.

“The G20’s focus on economic growth, trade, investment, climate action and digital transformation resonates deeply with developmental priorities in Limpopo. 

“We understand that global economic policies have real, tangible effects on the lives of ordinary people, and it is our duty to ensure that these policies translate into meaningful opportunities for our communities,” Dr Ramathuba said. 

Lutendo Luvhengo, a third year student at the University of Venda told SAnews that although she had little knowledge about G20 and South Africa’s G20 Presidency, she hoped that South Africa’s hosting of the G20 meetings would benefit ordinary people.

“I believe that our country’s economy is going to improve. The guests coming to South Africa some of them are going to invest in our country and that will create more jobs,” she said.

Luvhengo was confident that the G20 meetings were going to be successful.

Echoing same sentiments was Israel Marema, first year Bcom student who said the G20 meetings were “investments in the country”.

“This is going to reduce the level of poverty by creating more job opportunities,” he said. 

Today’s launch of the G20 Outreach Programme forms part of a series of initiatives aimed at fostering wider public dialogue and participation in South Africa's G20 Presidency. – SAnews.gov.za

The upcoming Group of 20 (G20) Leaders’ Summit at the end of the year is anticipated to significantly enhance the tourism sector’s contribution to economic growth and job creation. 

This is according to the International Relations and Cooperation Minister, Ronald Lamola, who shared this perspective while responding to a parliamentary question about his department’s strategy to leverage South Africa’s G20 Presidency to create sustainable benefits for the economy, particularly for small businesses in townships and rural areas.

“By hosting G20 meetings across all provinces, South Africa aims to achieve a considerable economic boost, attracting tens of thousands of delegates and support staff from major global economies to provinces throughout its year-long Presidency,” he told Members of Parliament (MPs). 

South Africa assumed the Chair of the G20 on 1 December 2023, taking over from Brazil. 

The G20 consists of 19 countries, along with the European Union (EU) and the African Union (AU), which joined last year. 

This group brings together the world’s major and systemically important economies.

The Minister believes that this surge in tourism presents significant opportunities for South African provinces and cities to showcase their cultural heritage and tourism potential. 

According to Lamola, South Africa’s Presidency of the G20 is anticipated to be one of the largest national projects, requiring whole-of-government and society participation. 

From 1 December 2024 to 30 November 2025, South Africa will host well over 100 in-person meetings across the country. 

“Firstly, the G20 will boost South Africa’s tourism sector, increasing employment and allowing provinces to showcase their cultural treasures.”

The Minister highlighted that the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) reported that South Africa’s tourism sector employed 1.46 million people in 2023. 

This number is expected to increase to 1.7 million jobs soon, driven by a targeted initiative aimed at significantly boosting employment over the next five years. 

He also mentioned that WTTC statistics showed that tourism’s direct and indirect contribution to South Africa’s GDP was 8.2% in 2023, with expectations to rise to 8.8% in 2024.

In addition, it also allows for a demonstration of the nation’s advancements across multiple sectors.

According to Lamola, the G20 meetings are anticipated to generate considerable economic benefits, creating many direct and indirect jobs during and beyond this period. 

The Minister believes that Africa’s G20 Presidency offers an opportunity to promote inclusive growth, combat poverty, and ensure sustainable development. 

“Ultimately, the high-level deliverables and priorities identified for South Africa’s G20 Presidency will benefit South Africa at the national, continental, and global levels. 

“The G20 serves as a strategic platform for South Africa to lobby for policies aimed at advancing the three strategic priorities of the seventh administration.” 

These include driving inclusive growth and job creation, reducing poverty and tackling the high cost of living, and building a capable, ethical, and developmental State.

In addition, South Africa’s second priority under its G20 Presidency is ensuring debt sustainability for developing economies. 

“In pursuing this, South Africa aims to see greater urgency in addressing the debt and solvency challenges many countries face, determining clear solutions to mobilise low-cost financing for development.

This approach will help reduce debt service costs for developing countries, including South Africa, thereby freeing up spending on essential services such as education, healthcare, and the infrastructure needed for economic development,” he told MPs.

Meanwhile, he said the nation seeks to leverage its G20 Presidency by promoting “harnessing critical minerals for inclusive growth and development.” 

“South Africa calls for a G20 framework on green industrialisation and investments to ensure progress towards a grand bargain that adds value to critical minerals, particularly near the source of extraction.” 

He believes that promoting the beneficiation and local value addition of resources at the source will result in a more additive rather than extractive relationship. 

“As mineral extraction accelerates to meet the energy transition needs, the countries and local communities endowed with these rich resources must be the primary beneficiaries,” he added. – SAnews.gov.za
