SA condemns Israel’s refusal to allow aid into Gaza

South Africa says it strongly condemns the refusal of Israel to allow humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip and its closure of border crossings at a time when the people of Gaza are experiencing immeasurable suffering and urgently need food, shelter, and medical supplies.

This is according to a statement issued by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) on Wednesday. 

According to reports, Israel blocked the entry of all humanitarian aid into Gaza on Sunday as it demands Hamas agree to a United States plan for a ceasefire extension.

The department said preventing food from entering Gaza is a continuation of Israel’s use of starvation as a weapon of war as part of the ongoing campaign of what the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled to be plausible genocide against the Palestinian people. 

“South Africa concurs with Qatar, one of the guarantors of the ceasefire agreement, that halting the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip is a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement, international humanitarian law, and the Fourth Geneva Convention.” 

South Africa has since called on the international community to hold Israel accountable and ensure the safe, continuous, and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to all areas of the Gaza Strip.

The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has implored Israel to end its suspension of humanitarian aid to Gaza “immediately” and to allow aid to flow without impediment in an environment ensuring the safety and security of civilians, including humanitarian workers. 

Guterres has also “urged all parties to make every effort to prevent a return to hostilities in Gaza”, and to find a way forward on the next phase of the ceasefire agreement. 

“South Africa also condemns Israel’s ongoing military operations in the West Bank that represent a dangerous escalation, and which further threatens the Palestinian quest for self-determination and statehood.” 

According to the department, the forced displacement of 40 000 Palestinians from Jenin, Tulkarem, Nour Shams, and elsewhere threatens to erase Palestinian refugee camps, and the right of return.

“The concurrent ban on the UN Relief and Works Agency’s (UNRWA) activities in these areas constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and strips displaced Palestinians of essential support and international oversight,” the department added. 

The department stated that the expanded Israeli military presence, now at its highest levels in the West Bank since 2002, signals an intent to re-establish full-scale military occupation, and undermines the Palestinian Authority and its governance.   

“South Africa supports the guarantors’ continued efforts to address the reported violations of the ceasefire agreement.” 

The department said the delay in releasing the 620 Palestinian prisoners constitutes a fundamental breach of negotiated terms.   

“South Africa once again calls on the international community to act with urgency and decisive action to address the continued systematic violation of international law and international humanitarian and human rights law.” 

The department said South Africa welcomes the outcomes of the Arab League Emergency Summit held on Tuesday, 4 March 2025, that supports a settlement in Gaza that is led by, and inclusive of, Palestinians, and that expressly rejects the ethnic cleansing and forced displacement of Palestinians in Gaza. 

The country has also thrown its weight behind the Arab League’s call for a UN international peacekeeping force in the West Bank and Gaza to ensure security and stability.   

“South Africa also expresses its grave concern over Israel’s continuing violation of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity by towns South of Damascus and the southern province of Daraa. 

“Israel’s depiction of Southern Syria as a ‘security zone’, and statements that any attempt by Syrian government forces to establish themselves in the zone violate Syria’s sovereignty.” – SAnews.gov.za

SA needs R440 billion for transmission development

South Africa requires upwards of R440 billion in the next 10 years to expand its transmission infrastructure, says Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa.

Addressing the Africa Energy Indaba in Cape Town on Tuesday, the Minister said the country’s transmission development plans have identified the need to modernise and expand the grid for 14 000 kilometres in the next 10 years.

“This is going to require an enormous amount of investment. The fiscus won’t be able to carry that. The Eskom balance sheet is not sufficient, so it is important to find bespoke financing instruments to make this possible,” the Minister said.

He called on financial actors to actively take steps to significantly lower the cost of borrowing for the investment of the continent’s development, climate resilience and clean energy transition initiatives.

“We expect the increase in electricity trade volumes to grow by about 300% by 2040 and by that time, the projection is that Africa’s population will be at about two billion people from the current 1.5 billion. For us to be able to achieve this level of ambition, there are huge investments that are required.

“One of the studies done by some of the... organisations suggests that Africa will need upwards of R2.6 trillion in investments in the energy sector by 2040. The pool of financing is enormous. Even if you had to consolidate the balance sheet of the continent, I don’t think we are going to get anywhere near raising this money.

“That is why it is important that we are able to design a financing instrument for us to be able to achieve this level of ambition,” Ramokgopa said.

He expressed support for a single electricity market on the continent, as advocated for by the the African Union's Agenda 2063.

“We think that the ambitions of achieving a single electricity market on the continent is not far-fetched .For us to have universal access by 2063, as advocated for in Agenda 2063, which makes a point that we can achieve that through regional integration… there has to be significant investment on interconnectivity,” the Minister said.

With South Africa hosting the Group of Twenty (G20) Presidency, Ramokgopa outlined the G20 technical energy group priorities, which include energy security and forging reliable and affordable access; achieving just, affordable and inclusive energy transitions, as well as African connectivity and energy pools.

These priorities were canvassed through the platform of the African Union.

According to Ramokgopa, 43% of the total population in Africa does not have access to electricity.

“This is a big issue. Before you can talk about transitioning, people need to have access to whatever form of electricity, irrespective of the fuel sources.

“As a country and the continent, we bear the responsibility to ensure that we are able to provide this access in a manner that doesn’t degrade the environment and keep to our obligations to ensure that we reduce the greenhouse gas emissions, although we contribute less than 2.5% of the CO2 emissions. Going into the future, gas will still be part of the mix on the continent,” the Minister said.

Focus on just transition

South Africa’s G20 Presidency will elevate the issue of just, affordable and inclusive energy transitions.

“That is important because we are of the opinion that there is no single transition. Any transition should take into account the unique circumstances of individual countries, and the pace and scale that they can afford.

“We will be meeting with the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) and are hoping that the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) will be release to the public soon. The plan will explain how we see the transitions unfold in the country,” Ramokgopa said.

South Africa's G20 Presidency is the fourth consecutive emerging market Presidency, and it is also the first African Presidency.

It commenced on 1 December 2024 and all engagements are being held under the theme: “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability”.

The year-long deliberations will culminate in a G20 Leaders’ Summit in November 2025.

The G20 was established to tackle pressing global economic and financial issues. Together, G20 members account for around 85% of global GDP and 75% of international trade. 

It comprises 19 countries and two regional bodies, namely the European Union and the African Union.

The grouping plays a critical role in influencing global policy making and fostering global economic stability. - SAnews.gov.za

Hlabisa to launch the G20 Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group in SA

The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Velenkosini Hlabisa, will officially launch the inaugural virtual meeting of the Group of Twenty Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group (G20 DRR WG) under the South African Presidency on Thursday.

South Africa will host the G20 under the theme “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability”, which will serve as the guiding principles for collective engagements. 

Through the G20 DRR WG, South Africa has a unique opportunity to reinforce the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction implementation and support the acceleration of early warnings for all initiatives, a key global target set by the United Nations (UN). 

The Sendai Framework emphasises the importance of implementing measures that target the three dimensions of disaster risk – exposure to hazards, vulnerability and capacity, and the characteristics of hazards. 

Its goals are to prevent the creation of new risks, reduce existing risks, and enhance resilience.

Having acknowledged the work done by India and Brazil’s Presidencies in strengthening the G20 DRR WG the South African Presidency has decided to retain all six priorities agreed upon under those Presidencies. 

The launch of this working group’s first meeting by Hlabisa forms part of a series of ministerial and working group meetings that will take place throughout 2025. 

These discussions are expected to culminate in the G20 Leaders’ Summit in November 2025. – SAnews.gov.za

Finance in Common Summit Urges Global Development Finance Institutions to Harness Collective Power to Address Global Poverty

The fifth edition of the Finance in Common Summit (FiCS) concluded on Friday in Cape Town, South Africa, with strong calls for global development finance institutions to work together to address poverty and development challenges. South African Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana led the call.

The summit, which was co-sponsored by the African Development Bank and took place alongside the G20 Finance Ministers' Meeting, was themed "Fostering Infrastructure and Finance for Fair and Sustainable Growth."

Godongwana described the meeting as an unprecedented gathering of key financial players, saying: "Your determination and commitment will change the world. Your determination and will have an impact on global poverty.”

The minister linked the summit's goals to South Africa's development trajectory, highlighting the structural reforms the country had undertaken in the electricity, roads, and port sectors, which have opened new investment opportunities to development partners.

African Development Bank Vice President for Finance and Chief Financial Officer, Hassatou Diop N'Sele—one of several senior officials of the Bank Group at FiCS—represented Bank Group President, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina at a meeting on Wednesday organized by the Council of Europe Development Bank. At the meeting, multilateral development banks reaffirmed a shared commitment to maximize their collective impact.

During the G20 meetings of Finance Ministers and central bank governors, Hassatou Diop N'Sele said, “We call on G20 nations to enhance financial commitments, especially for the 17th replenishment of the African Development Fund, to simplify processes for accessing climate finance, and to create enabling policies that facilitate sustainable capital flows to Africa.”

In her various interventions during FiCS, she discussed the innovative financing tools and initiatives launched by the African Development Bank to leverage resources and mobilize the private sector at scale, including the landmark hybrid capital transactions successfully replicated by other development finance institutions and the Africa Investment Forum.

N'Sele emphasized the urgency for philanthropies and foundations to further strengthen their partnerships with multilateral development banks and to fully embrace innovation to amplify their impact. She also recognized the challenges for expanding climate finance in Africa and reflected on such solutions and platforms as the Alliance for Green Infrastructure in Africa, designed to catalyze bankable, greener infrastructure projects at scale and speed.

The African Development Bank delegation highlighted the progress of Mission 300 (https://apo-opa.co/4bolqQE), an initiative to accelerate access to electricity for 300 million Africans by 2030. The Bank, working with the World Bank and other development finance institutions and private sector partners, has committed $18.2 billion to this effort.

Senior leaders of the Bank stressed the need for urgent action. Nnenna Nwabufo, Bank Group Vice President for Regional Development, Integration and Business Delivery, said: "Africa is not looking for aid, we are looking for partnerships.".

She added: "The time for pilot projects that deliver incremental progress is over. We need investments that enable our nations to take ownership of their development, fostering resilience, self-sufficiency, and sustainable growth that benefits both Africa and the global economy."

Solomon Quaynor, the African Development Bank's Vice President for Private Sector, Infrastructure and Industrialization, called for faster implementation of infrastructure projects. "Africa can no longer sustain infrastructure projects that take seven to 10 years to complete - we must accelerate development to deliver within three years, prioritizing green infrastructure," he said.

The African continent needs $2.7 trillion through 2030 to meet its climate action goals, but receives only 3.6% of all global climate finance, despite its minimal contribution to global emissions.

The African Development Bank's Director General for Southern Africa, Leila Mokaddem, emphasized that Africa's green transition must be inclusive. She said: "With 600 million Africans still without electricity, our transition cannot be about climate goals alone. It must be about jobs, industrialization and economic opportunity. The African Development Bank is supporting this vision through its Jobs for Youth in Africa strategy to create 25 million jobs and equip 50 million young Africans with green economy skills by the end of this year.”

The summit achieved several significant breakthroughs in expanding the scope and impact of development financing. Key outcomes included: the endorsement by G20 finance ministers of public development banks' crucial role in international financial architecture; steps toward setting up frameworks to support cultural industries as valid asset classes; and the formation of a coalition between public development banks and civil society to ensure that development finance serves communities.

CEO of Agence Française de Développement and Chair of the Finance in Common Summit Rémy Rioux noted: "We have made tremendous progress in building public development banks as an asset class through innovation, commitment, and shared values. In times of uncertainty and conflict, we are offering a calm, collective alternative."

"This has truly been an African FiCS," said Boitumelo Mosako, CEO of the Development Bank of Southern Africa. He added:  "With 34% of delegates coming from the continent, we have shown that Africa is unstoppable as the second fastest growing region in the world."

Following the Finance in Common Summit, the Fourth Finance for Development Conference will take place in Spain between June and July this year. Being organized by the United Nations and the Spanish government, that summit will feature continuing discussions on reshaping the international financial architecture to better serve development needs.

U20 South Africa: Africa's 'moment to lead'

City of Tshwane Mayor, Dr Nasiphi Moya, has described the 8th cycle of the Urban 20 (U20) – which is co-chaired by the City of Tshwane and Johannesburg - as a moment for Africa to lead.

The Mayor was delivering remarks at the launch of the 8th cycle of the U20 on Monday.

The U20 is an engagement group of the Group of 20 (G20). South Africa has taken over the Presidency of the G20 for 2025.

“This is our moment to lead. Not just as the City of Tshwane or the City of Johannesburg, but as Africa’s voice in the global urban conversation.

“Through U20 2025, we have the opportunity to shape a future that is just, sustainable, and inclusive. A future where African cities are not just participants but leaders in the global urban agenda.

“As co-hosts of U20 2025, our mission is clear: to ensure that the voice of African cities is heard on the world stage and that the priorities of the Global South are brought into the G20 agenda,” Moya said.

The U20 is a city diplomacy initiative which includes cities from the G20 countries and this year’s theme will be “Cities Leading the Way in Reimagining Global Change”.

Key priorities for this year include:
•    Economic opportunities and financing
•    Climate action and urban resilience
•    Social inclusion and equity
•    Digital transformation and innovation

Engaging citizens

Moya highlighted that although this year’s U20 will build on the foundation laid by last year’s co-chairs São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, “our goal is to ensure that this presidency reflects the realities of African cities and the needs of our communities”.

“U20 is a global initiative, but its success will not be measured in communiqués and declarations alone. Its impact must be felt at a local level. 

“This is not just about diplomatic meetings and international cooperation. It is about real economic opportunities, real investment, and real solutions for our people. It is about ensuring that the people of Tshwane and Johannesburg see themselves in this process and feel its benefits.

“We must use this platform not just to advocate for our cities on the global stage, but to showcase their resilience, innovation, and leadership to our own communities,” she said.

Pressing further, Moya emphasised that the impact of the U20 “must extend beyond government officials and politicians” who will gather for the U20 Sherpa Summit and African Mayor’s Assembly in June and the Mayoral Summit in September.

“We are committed to ensuring that the U20 process engages the people it is meant to serve. That means creating spaces for public dialogue and community participation, ensuring that our residents have a voice in shaping urban policies. 

“It means fostering connections between local entrepreneurs and global investors, creating pathways for businesses to grow. It means recognising that Tshwane, as a knowledge hub, has world-class institutions that must be part of this conversation.

“Cities are on the frontlines of the climate crisis, economic inequality, and social exclusion. It is time for our voices to be heard at the highest levels of global decision-making,” Moya said. – SAnews.gov.za

SA welcomes EU support on geopolitics

The Cabinet has welcomed the support of the European Union (EU) for South Africa’s positions on global geopolitics and the priorities of its Group of 20 (G20) Presidency. 

This follows the successful 16th Ministerial Political Dialogue between South Africa and the EU, which took place on 19 February 2025 in Cape Town.

“The dialogue presented an opportunity for the EU and South Africa to reiterate their common commitment to multilateralism, rules-based international order, and the centrality of the United Nations (UN) Charter,” said Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni on Thursday. 

The Minister was addressing a post-Cabinet briefing in Cape Town after Wednesday's meeting.

According to Ntshavheni, the parties at  the ministerial dialogue also agreed on the need to reform the UN Security Council, recognising the urgent need to make it more representative, inclusive, transparent, efficient, democratic and accountable.

The EU and South Africa discussed their cooperation in multilateral and regional fora, highlighting their joint efforts to promote human rights, sustainable development and address climate change.

“They also reviewed opportunities to step up cooperation on sustainable value chains, including critical raw materials to further their respective competitiveness, economic security and decarbonisation efforts,” Ntshavheni said.

She explained that the meeting also acted as a preparatory platform for the upcoming EU-South Africa Summit, scheduled for 13 March 2025 in South Africa. 

The summit will focus on improving economic relations, ensuring a just energy transition, addressing security and defence issues, promoting sustainable value chains and enhancing multilateral cooperation.

The EU is South Africa’s top source of foreign direct investment and South Africa is the EU’s largest trading partner in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Moreover, Ntshavheni said the meeting also underscored the importance of holding the EU-African Union (AU) Ministerial Meeting and Summit in 2025. – SAnews.gov.za

SA positioned to navigate challenging geopolitical situation – WEF President

Amidst a fragmented geopolitical landscape, the President and CEO of the World Economic Forum, Børge Brende, has expressed support for South Africa’s Group 20 (G20) Presidency.

“In such a polarised, fragmented world as [the] backdrop of this G20 leadership, I think South Africa is especially well positioned to handle this very complicated geopolitical situation,” Brende said on Tuesday.

Brende was addressing the Business 20 (B20) -- the official dialogue forum for domestic and international business communities.

In his address, he stated that South Africa has extensive experience in managing competition and its history.

“It’s not an easy G20 to take on but that’s a reality with the geopolitical backdrop that [it] is happening against,” Brende said.

He said the current geopolitical situation is a priority for everyone, making the global business voice more crucial than ever.

“The last weeks have shown us we have to fasten our seat belts and even getting people that don’t agree [with us] in the same room is not almost an achievement. I saw that in Davos this year when people don’t agree [with you] they don’t want to even discuss [matters]. But to break impasses at least, you must start with the dialogue and sit in the same room and say, ‘this is important to me’.

“Sherpas can then try to find some solutions, because the solutions are so incredibly important…,” he said.

With South Africa set to host the G20 Leaders' Summit later this year, Cape Town hosted the two-day B20, which began on Monday.

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde previously said  that the province and Cape Town look forward to welcoming the world once again.

The gathering focused on the theme “Inclusive Growth and Prosperity through Global Participation.”

Brende said the private sector has a key role to play in mobilising investment, driving innovation, and finding solutions to shared challenges.

“That means that if you want to get anything done, you also must work with the business sector. That’s the only way to also get investments and fresh money,” he explained. 

He described Africa, with its fast-growing economies and young workforce, as poised to shape the future. 

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) alone has the potential to unlock $450 billion in economic gains over the next decade.

The World Economic Forum, he said, has a long-fostered collaboration between business and government, and is committed to supporting this effort through initiatives such as the First Movers Coalition that pushes for green technologies.

“Now is the time for the B20 and G20 to work together to accelerate sustainable growth, strengthen global trade, and ensure that economic progress benefits all. 

“South Africa’s long-standing commitment to cooperation serves as a powerful example of what is possible when we find common ground.”

Brende also touched on the key challenges including climate change, cybercrime, and the need for global consensus on issues like carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and cybersecurity. 

Despite the geopolitical tensions, Brende stated that the global economy is expected to grow by over 3% this year.  

“Trade is expected to grow by 3%, however, the growth we are seeing in trade is not coming from traditional manufacturing goods. Digital trade and services are projecting significant growth. The biggest game changers over the next few years will be new technologies.”

He said the technological advancements, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, could boost productivity by 10% in a decade.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, King of the Ashanti Kingdom; Hon. President Ramaphosa to open G20 finance track meeting 

President Cyril Ramaphosa will open the first meeting of the Group of 20 (G20) Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors’ under South Africa’s Presidency.

“The first G20 Finance Meeting and Central Bank Governors Meeting in South Africa will focus on the thematic areas of [the] global economy, debt, infrastructure, joint finance and health task force, international taxation, finance sector issues, and sustainable finance,” the Presidency said on Tuesday.

This engagement will take place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on Wednesday, 26 February 2025. 

The G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors’ Meeting is hosted by the Minister of Finance Enoch Godongwana and Governor of the South African Reserve Bank, Lesetja Kganyago under South Africa’s G20 Presidency theme of “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability.”

The Finance Ministers meeting is preceded by the second meeting of the Finance and Central Bank Deputies which took place on 24 and 25 February 2025. 

“South Africa’s G20 Presidency commenced in December 2024, and the Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors’ meeting is part of a series of 23 ministerial and approximately 130 working groups meetings that will take place during the course of 2025. The year-long deliberations will culminate in a G20 Leaders’ Summit in November 2025,” the Presidency said.

The G20 was originally established as a meeting of Finance Ministers in response to the Asian financial crisis of 1997-99, with the aim of coordinating policies to promote international financial stability’.

This initiative was elevated to a Heads of State and Government Leaders Meeting in 2008 after the global financial crisis of 2007.

Together, G20 members account for around 85% of global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 75% of international trade. 
It comprises 19 countries including: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, United Kingdom, and United States and two regional bodies, namely the European Union and the African Union.

Traditional leaders urged to help build a better SA 

President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on traditional leaders to work alongside the Government of National Unity (GNU) in shaping a prosperous and inclusive future for South Africa.

Addressing the annual opening of the National House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders (NHTKL) at the Good Hope Centre in Cape Town, the President reaffirmed the vital role of traditional leadership in the country’s development.

“As the Government of National Unity, I once again call on Amakhosi to join hands with us as we embark on a new, glorious future for South Africa and its people,” said President Ramaphosa said on Tuesday.

The National House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders comprises traditional leaders who are delegates from the Provincial Houses of Traditional Leaders of South Africa and represent the Provincial Houses at national level.

He highlighted the historical significance of traditional leadership, noting that traditional leaders support governance in many rural and peri-urban communities, often facing the harshest conditions of poverty, inequality, and climate change. 

The President expressed concern over the recent devastating floods in KwaZulu-Natal, which led to loss of life and destruction of property and infrastructure. He urged Amakhosi to work with disaster management teams to protect rural communities from extreme weather events.

“The recent floods in parts of KwaZulu-Natal have led to loss of life, damage to farming land, and the destruction of property and infrastructure. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the affected communities. 

“I want to use this opportunity to call on you as Amakhosi to work with the disaster management response teams in our provinces and support the work that is being done to protect our rural communities against extreme weather,” he said.

Killings

President Ramaphosa strongly condemned the increasing assassinations of traditional leaders, calling the attacks an “affront to our nation". 

He referenced the recent killing of Contralesa NEC member and Ndzundza-Fene Traditional Council Chairperson, Kosi Thugwana, in Mpumalanga, stressing that such violence must be rooted out.

“Even one killing is one too many. Be assured that our law enforcement agencies are working around the clock to ensure that the perpetrators of these heinous crime are brought to book.”

Shared prosperity 

The President reiterated the government’s commitment to working with traditional and Khoi-San leaders to foster unity and development. He also emphasised the importance of their participation in the upcoming National Dialogue, a platform aimed at fostering inclusivity and shaping the country’s future.

He said that government will rely on the traditional leaders’ guidance to rally people towards a future of shared prosperity and inclusivity.

“It will be important that traditional leaders and the communities they lead [to] participate in the National Dialogue so that the process produces a plan that reflects the interests and aspirations of everyone.

“The Medium Term Development Plan that we have adopted as the Government of National Unity intends to advance three strategic priorities: to drive inclusive growth and job creation, to reduce poverty and tackle the high cost of living and to build a capable, ethical and developmental state,” the President explained.

He also highlighted ongoing consultations to review the White Paper on Local Government and emphasised the role of Amakhosi in shaping policies that affect rural communities.

The Deputy President has been mandated to facilitate dialogues with traditional leaders, further strengthening collaboration between government and traditional institutions.

Legislative developments

Following the Constitutional Court’s ruling that declared the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Act unconstitutional, the President confirmed that steps were being taken to reintroduce a revised bill in Parliament. 

He urged traditional leaders to actively participate in consultations to ensure their interests are reflected in the legislation.

In addition, President Ramaphosa addressed the longstanding issue of customary initiation practices, particularly in the Eastern Cape, where fatalities and injuries continue to be a concern. 

The government has gazetted regulations for public comment and is working towards drafting guidelines to regulate initiation school fees and prevent exploitation.

Turning to the issue of land reform and economic development, the President reaffirmed the government’s commitment to land reform, noting the passage of the Expropriation Act as part of efforts to ensure that land is equitably shared.

The Department of Land Reform and Rural Development has completed its work on the Communal Land Tenure Bill and is set to conduct public consultations.

Tackling gender-based violence and Forum of Majesties

The President urged Amakhosi to take a stand against gender-based violence and femicide, emphasising that such crimes have no place in African culture. He commended the House for its existing initiatives and called for greater involvement in protecting women and children.

“We know that such violence is not part of any culture. Violence against women and children is not part of the nation we want to build.”

Turning to traditional leadership, President Ramaphosa welcomed the launch of the Forum of South Africa’s Majesties, chaired by His Majesty King Makhosonke II, and acknowledged efforts to establish a similar platform for Queens. 
He also encouraged traditional leaders to continue engaging with government ministries, particularly in sectors such as mineral resources, to ensure communities benefit from the country’s natural wealth.

G20 and National Budget

With South Africa set to host the G20 Summit for the first time later this year, the President urged traditional leaders to use the opportunity to showcase the nation’s diverse cultural heritage. 

He also addressed the postponement of the Budget Speech, explaining that further discussions were necessary to align the priorities of the multi-party GNU.

“In the interests of consensus-building, we are undertaking further discussions so that we can arrive at a budget that everyone can have confidence in a budget that promotes inclusive growth, supports job creation and that tackles poverty and inequality,” he said.

South African journalists/media have been invited to submit their entries for the 2025 SADC Media Awards competition.

The SADC Media Awards competition is open to journalists from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Member States. 

The awards were established in 1996 to recognise best media work in disseminating information on SADC to support the process of regional co-operation and integration in the region. 

To promote regional integration and cooperation, the awards aim to recognise excellence in journalism in the area of print, photo, television, radio as well as to encourage media practitioners in member states to cover issues pertaining to the region.

The first prize winners will receive their prizes and certificates on the margins of the SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government that will take place in August 2025.

The first prize winner in each category receives US$2500 and the runner-up receives US$1000.

The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George has called on African countries to act with resolve and clarity of purpose on issues of climate change.

This as the Minister attended the annual Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 16 February.

The meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the 38th African Union (AU) Summit, is where Heads of African States and Government consider climate issues of strategic importance to the Continent.

During this session, the Coordinator of CAHOSCC, Dr William Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya delivered his report which highlighted various developments since the last meeting in 2024.

The report included reflections on the outcomes of the 29th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in November 2024 and the implications for Africa, the CAHOSCC report from the meeting held on the margins of the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York, in September 2024, updates from the Africa Climate Initiatives and Commissions, and the operationalisation of the Africa Climate Summit outcomes.

The CAHOSCC meeting also considered and submitted a draft decision on key climate change issues for adoption by the AU Assembly.

While delivering his intervention at the meeting, Dr George reiterated the need for African countries to "act with resolve and clarity of purpose" and went on to highlight the opportunities to do so through South Africa’s G20 Presidency.

“The Minister is leading on the G20 Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group (ECSWG) which has the overall objective to advance the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through focusing on a number of priorities and deliverables,” the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment said in a statement on Saturday.

These include focusing on adapting to climate change and building resilience, addressing loss and damage, the just transition and mobilising climate finance.

The other priority areas include biodiversity and conservation, addressing land degradation, desertification and drought, sustainable chemicals and waste management as well as oceans and coasts.

Following a request by Dr George in his intervention, the meeting resolved to request the AU Commission to convene a consultative meeting with AU Member States to deliberate about the priorities and proposed deliverables for the ECSWG prior to the first virtual meeting of the Working Group in March 2025. -SAnews.gov.za

Cabinet reiterates SA’s commitment to ensuring stability in the DRC

Cabinet has reiterated South Africa’s commitment to a diplomatic solution that ensures stability in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), while also protecting the well-being of the Congolese people.

In a statement on Friday, Cabinet paid tribute to the 14 gallant South African soldiers who were killed recently in the DRC while undertaking a United Nations (UN)-backed peacekeeping mission.

“These brave soldiers had been deployed in the country as part of the Southern African Development Community Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC) and the UN Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO),” Cabinet said following its meeting on 12 February and a Special Cabinet meeting on 29 January.

Cabinet affirmed that South Africa would continue to play its peacekeeping mission role and support other African countries whose solidarity, and material support helped secure the country’s liberation.

Cabinet was updated on the recent developments in the eastern DRC and called on all parties to embrace current diplomatic efforts aimed at finding a peaceful resolution.

The parties were also called to adhere to calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities and restoration of essential utilities.

Cabinet further welcomed efforts by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) leaders, aimed at finding a resolution to the conflict and facilitating the repatriation of the deceased and injured soldiers of South Africa, Malawi and Tanzania.

The remains of the 14 South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers who died in the eastern DRC were returned home last week and handed over to their families during a memorial service, held at Swartkop Air Force Base in Centurion.

“The outcome of the Heads of State Summit held in Tanzania on 8 February 2025 on the conflict also provides a beacon of hope for the troubled eastern DRC,” Cabinet said.

The Border Management Authority (BMA) says the processing of dignitaries arriving for the G20 Foreign Ministers' meeting, currently underway in Johannesburg, was carried out smoothly.

“The G20 Ministers started arriving in the country from 19 February 2025 and will depart from 22 February 2025, using OR Tambo International Airport and Lanseria International Airport.

“Working together with law enforcement agencies, the BMA has ensured seamless processing of the Foreign Ministers in a safe environment upon arrival. To this effect, the BMA has augmented its capacity at these two airports and allocated dedicated Immigration counters for the delegates to ensure speedy processing of all travellers,” BMA Commissioner Masiapato said in a statement.

The two-day meeting which began on Thursday is taking place in Nasrec, Johannesburg.

South Africa assumed the G20 Presidency on 1 December 2024, which will culminate in a meeting of G20 Heads of State and Government later in November.

Various sectoral Ministerial meetings will be held throughout the year in the lead up to November. 
G20 members include the world’s major economies.

The BMA is a Schedule 3A National Public Entity established in April 2023 with the mandate of facilitating legitimate movement of goods and persons.

Speaking at the opening of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting at Nasrec in Johannesburg, President Ramaphosa emphasised the significance of hosting the G20 Leaders’ Summit on African soil. 

The Foreign Ministers' Meeting, hosted by the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, takes place under South Africa's G20 Presidency theme of 'Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability'. 

“Africa is home to some of the world’s fastest-growing economies and faces unique challenges, such as the impact of climate change, development needs and the effects of global trade dynamics.

“The Summit's location underscores the need for African voices to be heard on critical global issues, like sustainable development, the digital economy and the shift toward green energy,” President Ramaphosa said in his address on Thursday. – SAnews.gov.za

Deputy President Shipokosa Paulus Mashatile has today, Thursday, 20 February 2025, received a courtesy visit by the Chairman of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), Mr. REN Hongbin, at the OR Tambo Official Residence in Pretoria, Gauteng Province. 

The CCPIT is a key Chinese economic promotion institution that reports directly to the State Council responsible for the facilitation and promotion of trade and investment with foreign countries by supporting Chinese companies (their members) to do business abroad and to engage and support foreign companies that have operations in China.

It has more than 400 000 Chinese business members, the majority of which are from State-owned Companies (SoEs).

This visit to the Deputy President follows the successful 2nd State Visit to China by President Cyril Ramaphosa in September 2024. In particular, it builds on the outcomes of the President's business engagements, including the seminal South Africa – China Presidential Business Forum, the closed roundtable discussion between the President and the Leadership of 20 high-level Chinese investors, and the Presidential Business Programme in Shenzhen that focused on key investors in China's leading technology and innovation hub. 

Therefore, the Chairman's visit is mainly focussed on following up on the implementation of the outcomes of the 9th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit held in Beijing in September 2024, as well as optimising the trade and investment environment for better cooperation between South Africa and China.

Deputy President Mashatile has welcomed China's plan to host the FOCAC Ministerial Coordination Meeting alongside the China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo in June 2025.

Such events, he said, would strengthen Africa-China economic relations and accelerate projects in industrialisation, infrastructure, agricultural modernisation, and green development, aligning with AU Agenda 2063 goals.

“Chairman, our President was encouraged by the number of Chinese companies he interacted with in Beijing and Shenzhen last year, who all expressed a wish to increase their investment exposure in South Africa. We continue to prioritise new investments in targeted sectors and enlarge the beneficiation and manufacturing base in South Africa, especially in the automotive and energy, which will contribute to local job creation, technology, and skills transfer,” said the Deputy President.

Furthermore, the Deputy President took the opportunity presented by the visit to mobilise Chinese businesses to attend the Business20 (B20) meetings of the G20 in South Africa this coming year.

In reciprocating the invite by the Deputy President, the Chairman also invited South Africa to attend the 3rd China International Supply Chain Expo (CISCE) that will be hosted by the CCPIT in Beijing in July this year. The CISCE is one of the four national-level trade and investment conferences hosted in China yearly. The 2nd CISCE was held in Beijing in November 2024 and was addressed by the Vice President of China, Mr Han Zheng.

Post the meeting with the Deputy President, the Chairman is expected to meet with the Minister of Trade, Industry, and Competition, Mr Parks Tau.

During this meeting, Deputy President Mashatile was supported by Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ms Moraka and Deputy Minister of Trade Industry and Competition, Mr Godlimpi.

This as the province will host the B20 from 24-25 February in the year that South Africa hosts the Group of Twenty (G20) Leaders’ Summit.

“This is an important milestone for our province, country, and continent. It is a huge honour for us all to showcase the region to the world. We did this so well this last holiday season and again with the recent Mining Indaba and other major events. Now it is our opportunity to host the B20. Let us all put our best foot forward and send delegates home as marketers of Cape Town and the Western Cape,” he said.

According to the Premier, the B20 serves as an important networking platform for local companies and businesses to link up with international counterparts, who are eager to join hands with them in exploring ways in which to take economic growth and job creation forward.

The B20 offers several benefits, including attracting foreign investment, boosting tourism, enhancing the international reputation of the Western Cape and South Africa, and influencing global policy discussions.

The B20 summit will focus on the theme ’Inclusive Growth and Prosperity through Global Participation.’

Key areas of priority for the summit include trade and investment, infrastructure development, education, and climate change.
“We have a vital opportunity to showcase our economic successes, further highlight the region as an investment destination of choice, build on our achievements together with global partners, and deepen international ties to tackle critical issues.

“The issues that will be discussed at the B20 can influence the G20 and so we will ensure our voice is heard,” Winde added.

Meanwhile, more than 100 meetings of the G20 will be held throughout the year, 40 of which are planned to take place in the Western Cape.

“The Western Cape is ready to host even more meetings and gatherings linked to the G20 if need be. We must maximise the hosting of these events to enhance our global standing.”

Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa will today officially open and address the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Johannesburg.

The Foreign Ministers’ Meeting hosted by the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola takes place under South Africa’s G20 Presidency theme of “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability” on 20 and 21 February at the Nasrec Expo Centre. – SAnews.gov.za

Call for global solidarity at G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged global leaders to embrace inclusivity, cooperation and reform as South Africa steers the Presidency of the Group of 20 (G20) for the first time. 

Speaking at the opening of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting at Nasrec in Johannesburg, President Ramaphosa emphasised the significance of hosting the G20 Leaders’ Summit on African soil. 

The Foreign Ministers Meeting, hosted by the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, takes place under South Africa's G20 Presidency theme of 'Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability'. 

“Africa is home to some of the world’s fastest-growing economies and faces unique challenges, such as the impact of climate change, development needs and the effects of global trade dynamics.

“The Summit's location underscores the need for African voices to be heard on critical global issues, like sustainable development, the digital economy and the shift toward green energy,” President Ramaphosa said.

The President said this was a great opportunity to promote greater collaboration between African nations and the rest of the world.

He highlighted pressing global challenges, including geopolitical tensions, climate change, economic inequality and food insecurity, warning that the world’s fragile coexistence was under threat. 

“These challenges are interconnected. They require responses that are inclusive and coordinated. Yet, there is a lack of consensus among major powers, including in the G20, on how to respond to these issues of global significance,” he said. 

He called for greater consensus among major powers within the G20 to address these issues.

The President also highlighted that there are just five years to 2030, the deadline for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

He said the international community committed to this ambitious agenda to end poverty and hunger, to protect the planet, to achieve gender equality, universal education and health coverage, and to promote decent work and sustainable economic growth.

“Our commitment to achieve these targets we must not waver. The nations of the world look to the G20 for leadership on the most pressing issues confronting our world.

“Just as cooperation supported the progress of early humans, our modern-day challenges can only be resolved through collaboration, partnership and solidarity,” he said. 

President Ramaphosa said this was why South Africa had placed solidarity, equality and sustainability at the centre of its G20 Presidency.

“We would like our G20 Presidency to be one in which all voices are heard and in which all views count. The G20 represents over two-thirds of the world’s population. 

“Its decisions and policies must reflect the needs and aspirations of all who form part of the G20 family,” he said. 

He also called on the G20 to seek to reflect the needs and aspirations of all people who call this planet home.

A call for UN and global financial system reforms

With the United Nations marking its 80th anniversary, President Ramaphosa reiterated South Africa’s call for reforming the UN Security Council, the multilateral trading system, and the international financial architecture to make them more representative and responsive to today’s realities.

“The UN must change accordingly. We continue to call for the UN Security Council, the multilateral trading system and the international financial architecture to be reformed to make them more representative, more agile and more responsive to today’s global realities.

“As the G20, it is critical that the principles of the UN Charter, multilateralism and international law remain at the centre of all our endeavors,” the President asserted.

President Ramaphosa also addressed ongoing global conflicts, including the wars in Ukraine, Sudan, the Sahel and Gaza. 

He welcomed the recent ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, calling it a crucial first step toward lasting peace and urging diplomatic solutions to global conflicts.

“As the G20, we must continue to advocate for diplomatic solutions. Our own experience as South Africa is that the peaceful resolution of conflict through inclusive dialogue is the foremost guarantor of sustainable, lasting peace,” he said. 

Key priorities for South Africa’s G20 Presidency

Outlining South Africa’s vision for its G20 Presidency, President Ramaphosa identified four key priorities, which include strengthening disaster resilience and response, ensuring debt sustainability for low-income countries, mobilising climate finance for a just energy transition and harnessing critical minerals for sustainable development. 

He emphasised the need for international financial institutions and the private sector to scale up post-disaster recovery efforts, particularly in vulnerable nations.

With many developing economies burdened by high borrowing costs, he called on G20 leaders to renew efforts in addressing debt sustainability, especially in Africa.

On the third priority, President Ramaphosa urged developed nations to fulfil their obligations in supporting developing economies’ green energy transitions, in line with global climate agreements.

Turning to the last priority, the President proposed an inclusive G20 framework on green industrialisation and investment to promote value addition and beneficiation of critical minerals. – SAnews.gov.za

South Africa and the European Union (EU) have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening their strategic partnership during the 16th Session of the Ministerial Political Dialogue on Wednesday in Cape Town. 

International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola, along with the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas, co-chaired the dialogue in the context of the EU-South Africa Strategic Partnership.

“The EU-South Africa Ministerial Political Dialogue builds on the joint aspiration to further the strategic partnership, which has grown in depth and ambition over the years. 

“The political and security cooperation is strong, and so are trade and investment relations: South Africa is the EU’s largest trading partner in sub-Saharan Africa, and the EU is South Africa’s first trade and investment partner,” a joint communique said.               

The meeting was also attended by Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau, Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuizen, Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gawarube and Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Blade Nzimande. 

The High Representative’s three-day visit to Africa at the beginning of her mandate signals the EU’s commitment to the partnership with South Africa and with the continent.

The Ministerial Political Dialogue is a key milestone ahead of the 8th European Union-South Africa Summit, which is scheduled for 13 March 2025. 

The political engagements between the European Union and South Africa contribute to the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the European Union’s partnership with Africa. 

In this context, both sides underscored the importance of holding the European Union- African Union Ministerial Meeting and Summit in 2025.

“The Ministerial Political Dialogue presented an opportunity for the European Union and South Africa to reiterate their common commitment to multilateralism, a consistent approach to the rules-based international order, and the centrality of the United Nations Charter. 

“The parties further agreed on the need to reform the UN Security Council, recognising the urgent need to make it more representative, inclusive, transparent, efficient, democratic and accountable,” a joint communique said. 

Addressing global conflicts, both sides affirmed their unwavering commitment to act in accordance with international law, including the Charter of the United Nations and its purposes and principles. 

Both sides noted with distress the immense human suffering and the adverse impact of wars and conflicts around the world. 

The parties also reaffirmed that all states must act in a manner consistent with the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter in its entirety. 

“In line with the UN Charter, all states must refrain from the threat or use of force to seek territorial acquisition against the territorial integrity and sovereignty or political independence of any state and affirmed that all parties in conflicts must comply with their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law and international human rights law,” the joint communique said. 

Both sides further agreed that, guided by these principles, to support efforts towards a just peace in Ukraine, Occupied Palestinian Territory, Sudan, the DRC and other major conflicts around the globe.

The European Union and South Africa also discussed their cooperation in multilateral and regional fora, focusing in particular on their joint efforts to promote human rights and sustainable development and to address climate change.

The European Union emphasised its alignment with and support for South Africa G20’s presidency priorities.

In view of the Summit, the European Union and South Africa also looked at their economic, trade and investment agenda, including outstanding issues on both sides. 

“Underlining the importance of a just energy transition, the European Union and South Africa reviewed opportunities to step up cooperation on sustainable value chains, including critical raw materials with a view to further their respective competitiveness, economic security and decarbonisation efforts. 

“The parties agreed that critical minerals have emerged as a pivotal topic on the global stage, reflecting a critical role in driving industrialisation, technological innovation, and inclusive economic growth. South Africa underscored the need for the transition to a low carbon economy to be just, enhance energy security and create jobs. The two sides acknowledged the role of regulatory cooperation, investment facilitation, as well as of businesses in driving these initiatives,” the joint communique said. 

The European Union and South Africa further welcomed the robust collaboration in the areas of education, research and innovation. 

Both sides discussed opportunities to further enhance cooperation on open science and nuclear medical applications, to ensure progress on South Africa joining the Clean Hydrogen Mission of Mission Innovation. 

This is to broaden the participation of South Africa in the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (R&I) Horizon Europe and in the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions as well as to promote mobility and cooperation through Erasmus+.

The European Union and South Africa further agreed that international trade is an important engine for inclusive economic growth, combating poverty and hunger and promoting sustainable development and the SDGs. 

“The EU and South Africa also stressed that for trade and investment to act as a driver of global growth, well-being and prosperity, a transparent rules-based multilateral trading system, that is non-discriminatory, fair, open, inclusive, equitable and sustainable is a necessity. Both sides reaffirmed that the WTO must be at the core such a multilateral trading system,” said the joint communique.  – SAnews.gov.za

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas, will visit South Africa from 19-21 February. Her visit will aim to strengthen EU-South Africa relations and include participation in the G20 Foreign Ministers' meeting.

The visit comes as this year marks the 25th anniversary of the EU-Africa partnership, culminating in a Summit with EU and African leaders.

On 19 February, Kaja Kallas will co-chair the Ministerial Political Dialogue in Cape Town with South African counterparts to prepare for the 8th EU-South Africa Summit on 13 March. They will discuss key topics such as security, trade, and investment. The meeting will be followed by a joint press statement by High Representative Kallas and South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola. The High Representative will also engage with students, entrepreneurs, and civil society.

On 20-21 February, the High Representative will participate in the G20 Foreign Ministers' meeting in Johannesburg, under the theme "Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability." The two-day gathering will focus on the global geopolitical situation and South Africa's G20 Presidency priorities.

South Africa elected chair of African Regional Labour Administration Centre Governing Council

The Ministry of Employment and Labour has welcomed the election of South Africa as the chair of the African Regional Labour Administration Centre (ARLAC) Governing Council for the 2025-2027 term of office.

The Minister of Employment and Labour, Nomakhosazana Meth, will serve as the chair of the ARLAC Governing Council following the election of South Africa at the 51st Governing Council meeting held in Lusaka, Zambia, from 10 - 14 February 2025.

The Minister was represented at the summit by Deputy Minister Judith Nemadzinga-Tshabalala, who successfully led the South African delegation. 

The ARLAC is a regional institution with a mandate to strengthen labour administration systems in Africa through training, research and consultancy advisory services. It was established in 1974 by the International Labour Organisation and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

“We welcome the election of South Africa by member countries and wish to thank the outgoing chair of the Governing Council, Minister E. Moyo from Zimbabwe, and wish him well in his endeavours. We wish to also extend sincere gratitude to the government of Zambia for their warm welcome and hospitality,” Meth said.

Vice-President Mutale Nalumango of the Republic of Zambia was the guest speaker during the meeting of the Governing Council, and she emphasised the importance of fair employment and tackling informal employment.

The Governing Council meeting was preceded by a High-Level Ministerial Symposium on 12 February 2025, which featured a presentation by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) under the theme: “Innovative Approaches to Tackling Informality and Promoting Transition towards Formality to Promote Decent Work”, which is linked to Sustainable Development Goal 8 (SDG8) on “Decent Work and Economic Growth”.

The meeting focused on the importance of formalising informal work and the need to establish a legislative and policy framework to ensure the realisation of decent work on the African continent.

South Africa will also serve alongside four vice-chairs: Sierra Leone, Malawi, Sudan, and Zimbabwe. 

Additionally, South Africa also serves in the Committee of Senior Officials, together with other officials from Zimbabwe, Sudan, Zambia, and Sierra Leone. The Committee is tasked with overseeing governance, policy implementation, and programming, and meets four times a year to report to the Governing Council.

The outcomes of 51st ARLAC Governing Council meeting and High-Level Ministerial Symposium reflect South Africa's continued commitment to promoting decent work, social dialogue, and regional cooperation within the ARLAC community.

The next Governing Council meeting is scheduled to take place on the sidelines of the International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, in June 2025.

“The Department of Employment and Labour welcomes the election of South Africa as chair of the ARLAC Governing Council, which is an important institution with a mandate to provide training for labour administrators; provision of consultancy and advisory service aimed at strengthening labour administration systems in member countries.

SA, EU to co-chair Ministerial Political Dialogue

The Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, will co-chair the 16th Ministerial Political Dialogue between South Africa and the European Union (EU) on Wednesday, 19 February 2025, in Cape Town. 

Lamola will be joined by Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission. 

Lamola will also be accompanied by various Cabinet Ministers from South Africa.

“South Africa and the EU enjoy a strategic relationship characterised by multi-dimensional bilateral cooperation, which is long-standing and mutually beneficial,” the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIrCO) said in a statement. 

Diplomatic relations between South Africa and the EU were officially established in December 1993, just before the onset of South Africa's new democratic era.

In 1999, the Trade, Development and Cooperation Agreement (TDCA) was established to create a framework for strengthening and diversifying bilateral cooperation. 

This has been achieved through enhanced political dialogue, collaboration in trade and trade-related areas, economic cooperation, technical assistance and development cooperation.

“The TDCA also established a political dialogue between South Africa and the EU at the Ministerial level, serving as a mechanism to review progress on various areas of bilateral cooperation and discuss enhancing cooperation on regional and global developments of mutual interest.”

To date, the department has reported that seven summit meetings have taken place since 2007, with the next one scheduled for 13 March 2025. 

The 16th MPD meeting is therefore well-timed to prepare for the upcoming eighth summit meeting, which will be hosted by President Cyril Ramaphosa. –  SAnews.gov.za
