Deputy President Mashatile to attend Earthshot Prize Awards

Location: News

Deputy President Mashatile to attend Earthshot Prize Awards

Deputy President Paul Mashatile is expected to attend the 4th Annual Earthshot Prize Awards ceremony, this evening, in Cape Town.

The Deputy President will be attending Wednesday’s ceremony at the invitation of Britain’s Prince William and on behalf of President Cyril Ramaphosa.

This marks the first time the event will be held in South Africa.

Started by Prince William in 2020, the prize supports sustainable, eco-friendly projects from around the world. Five winners each receive £ 1 million.

According to the Deputy President’s Office, the prize is the most prestigious global prize for the environment in history, despite only being in its fourth year.

“Since then, the significant work that Earthshot has done by scaling ingenious solutions to the most pressing challenges facing the world, such as climate change, waste management, cleaning our air, saving our oceans, and saving and restoring nature is remarkable and aligned with South Africa’s priorities towards climate action, environmental protection and restoration, and cleaning the environment,” the Deputy President said.

Every year, the organisers search the globe for game-changing innovations that will help repair the planet and award the winners of the best five solutions with money to scale their work.

The initiative exists to discover, spotlight and help grow innovative solutions that are working to repair and regenerate our planet.

Last year, Earthshot welcomed its first South African finalist, ABALOBI, whose technology is making it easier for small fishing communities to monitor fish populations, improve market access, and recognise these communities as stewards of oceans.

“It is of particular importance that the focus of the Earthshot Prize Awards is on the impact of climate change on Africa and the innovative solutions found on the African continent to mitigate the impact of climate change and environmental degradation.”

Meanwhile, the Deputy President said it was an “honour” to welcome the Prince of Wales to South Africa, highlighting the unique relationship the Royal Family has with the country.

“The Prince of Wales continues to show his steadfast support and commitment to campaigning for the environment and advocating for the protection of our planet. These prestigious awards play a critical role in supporting and celebrating small enterprises that make a huge difference,” the Deputy President added.

Petrobras Pursues Strategic Oil & Gas Expansion in Southern Africa

Location: News
African Energy Chamber

Brazil's national oil company (NOC), Petrobras, has confirmed it is actively exploring opportunities in South Africa, Namibia and Angola, and it is currently awaiting Galp's decision on its offer to acquire a significant stake in the Mopane block offshore Namibia.

The announcement was made during a pre-conference workshop sponsored by Namibia Energy Corporation (NEC), leading up to the African Energy Week (AEW) 2024: Investing in African Energies conference. Petrobras is widely recognized for its success in the exploration and production of pre-salt oil reserves in the deep waters off the coast of Brazil, which hold close geological similarities to pre-salt areas in southern Africa.

“As we increase production, we increase the need for reserves. Brazil has a strong correlation with Africa. We feel very comfortable to come back to Africa, and are looking at opportunities in South Africa, Namibia and Angola,” said Sylvia Maria Couto dos Anjos, Executive Officer for Exploration and Production at Petrobras.

The company's technical expertise in pre-salt geology – particularly its ability to extract hydrocarbons from ultra-deep reservoirs beneath thick layers of salt – positions it as a strong contender to unlock frontier acreage in southern Africa. Geological similarities with Angola were highlighted during the workshop, as most of its hydrocarbon discoveries are offshore, with the majority of oil and gas resources located in deepwater reservoirs.

“Both Angola and Brazil have experience in developing deepwater reservoirs,” said Ricardo Van-Deste, CEO – Exploration and Production, Sonangol. “It is very important for us to bring Petrobras back to Angola. They left, but the door is still open.”

Petrobras' deepwater technology, developed over years of working in the Campos and Santos Basins off the shores of Brazil, could also be a game-changer in unlocking South Africa's offshore potential. These include TotalEnergies' Luiperd and Brulpadda discoveries. Earlier this month, the Brazilian NOC announced it had secured approval to acquire a 10% stake in the Deep Water Orange Basin located off the west coast of South Africa.

“Those are challenging operations. With Petrobras' experience and the technologies we have developed over time, this presents a valuable opportunity for us,” said Godfrey Moagi, CEO of the South African National Petroleum Company (SANPC).

In Namibia, Petrobras is currently evaluating entry opportunities as the country has produced a series of world-class discoveries. It is estimated to hold 100 billion barrels of oil equivalent in unrisked resources, with the Deep Water Orange Basin alone accounting for 30 billion barrels of oil equivalent.

“The potential of Namibia is incredible. We have a commitment to fulfill – I guarantee deals will come through,” said Dr. Marcio Rocha Mello, Founder & CEO of Namibia Energy Corporation.

Another key area for potential cooperation is the establishment of a Namibian center of excellence, aimed at enhancing technical capabilities and data analysis to deepen understanding of Namibia's petroleum basins and de-risk prospects for future exploration.

“A center like that in Namibia would enable us to replicate the success of the Orange Basin in the Walvis and Lüderitz basins,” said Maggy Shino, Petroleum Commissioner of Namibia's Ministry of Mines and Energy. “We have blocks that are bigger than some African countries. With such a large volume of available opportunities, we need a diversity of players to fully harness that potential.”

Condolences for Prof Noel Chabani Manganyi

Condolences for Prof Noel Chabani Manganyi

The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Blade Nzimande, has expressed his shock and great sadness at the news of the passing of Professor Noel Chabani Manganyi – a distinguished academic, scholar, intellectual activist, psychologist, and public servant.

Manganyi passed away on Tuesday, 31 October 2024, at the age of 84.

“I knew Prof Manganyi in a number of different respects. Firstly, we both trained in psychology and thus shared many intellectual positions on the importance of mental liberation as a site of struggle, especially for all black people in the face of apartheid colonialism.

“Secondly, we were both activists in the struggle against apartheid and shared a common vision for a radically transformed post-apartheid South Africa, including challenging dominant intellectual discourses.

“This brought us together in the period immediately after the establishment of democratic rule, working together in the reconstruction and development of South Africa’s post-apartheid education system,” the Minister recalled.

Manganyi was the first Director-General of the Department of Education after the establishment of democracy and worked with the Minister in his capacity as the first Chairperson of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Education.

Nzimande has described his fellow former activist as one of the most eloquent and deeply thoughtful intellectuals spawned by the black consciousness movement.

“His writings are still as relevant as ever,” said the Minister.

According to the Minister, Manganyi’s earlier book, ‘Being Black in the World’ was one of his prescribed texts in his Honours Psychology class in 1980 at the then University of Natal.

“A fine text indeed in the mould of the black consciousness philosophy, but very well written and well-argued.

“Prof Manganyi is without doubt one of our country’s most decorated academics.”

His roles include a Professorship at the then University of Transkei in Mthatha (now Walter Sisulu University), where he established the Department of Psychology and served as its first Chairperson.

In the 1980s, he was appointed Professor and Senior Research Fellow at the University of the Witwatersrand’s African Studies Institute.

He also served as Vice-Principal of the University of Pretoria, Vice-Chancellor and Principal at the University of the North (now the University of Limpopo) and as Chairperson of the Council on Higher Education.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Manganyi published a series of monographs, which included ‘Being Black in the World’ and the biographies of E’skia Mphahlele, Gerard Sekoto and Dumile Feni.

Adding to his already vast body of work, in 2016, he published a memoir and autobiography titled ‘Apartheid and the Making of a Black Psychologist’.

“Through this work, he examines the impact of apartheid underdevelopment, and how it hindered the success prospects of black people.

“Owing to his exceptional and groundbreaking scholarship, he was conferred with a number of prestigious national and international honours.”

These include being an Honorary Fellow of the Psychological Society of South Africa in 2012, the Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Research Foundation in 2016 and the Humanities Book Award by the Academy of Science of South Africa in 2018.

“Through his life’s work, Prof Manganyi enhanced our understanding of the impact of racism and colonial underdevelopment on the black psyche, identity, and power relations in apartheid South Africa. However, his work also reinforces the honour of fighting for freedom in a context where some chose to be indifferent,” Nzimande said.

Nzimande is of the view that the passing of Manganyi constitutes a monumental loss for the country and its people.

The Minister believes the Professor represents a rare breed of intellectuals, who concerned themselves with both the oppressive nature of society and the struggle to rid society of oppression.

“He was endowed with intellectual courage, an irrepressible urge to serve his people and despite his monumental personal achievements, he possessed a disarming humility. We will remember him as an incorruptible public servant and selfless son of the soil,” the Minister said.

He has since conveyed his heartfelt condolences to his wife, Dr Sekele-Manganyi, their children Nkhensani and Tintswalo, and extended family.

The memorial service for the late Manganyi will take place at the University of the Witwatersrand on Wednesday, 6 November 2024.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, 8 November 2024, at St Michael’s Anglican Church in Sandton in Gauteng. – SAnews.gov.za

Deputy Minister Letsike addresses Village Economy Indaba

Deputy Minister Letsike addresses Village Economy Indaba

Deputy Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Mmapaseka Letsike, says more than 60% of jobs and 25% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the African continent comes from the agricultural sector which is rooted in the rural areas.

“This presents an opportunity for boundless growth through the potential that is inherent in the rural economy and for expansion to industries that ordinarily have not proliferated in rural areas,” Letsike said.

Speaking at the Village Economy Indaba ceremony held in the North West province, Letsike said over half of the population resides in rural regions, yet these areas often face higher poverty rates, lower access to basic services and limited economic opportunities.
“This divide is not only a matter of geography, it concerns social justice, economic necessity, and national progress.”

Letsike said rural areas in South Africa hold an enormous but often overlooked potential for lifting people out of poverty.

“When we invest in rural economies, we create jobs and boost incomes in areas where they are needed most. Imagine empowering smallholder farmers with access to better technology, training, and markets.

“Not only could they increase their production, but they could also improve their livelihoods, leading to better education, healthcare, and overall well-being for their families and communities,” Letsike said on Friday.

The Deputy Minister said it was reported that about 75% of food produced on the continent is from small farms of less than 20 hectares, while 80% of the 51 million farms on the continent have an area less than two hectares.

“Developing rural economies helps curb urban migration. Every year, thousands of people leave rural areas, hoping for better opportunities in the big cities.

“By creating viable economic opportunities in rural areas, through initiatives such as The Village Economy Indaba whether in agriculture, renewable energy, tourism, or small-scale manufacturing, we can reduce the strain on our cities while enhancing quality of life in the countryside,” the Deputy Minister said.

Letsike said vulnerable groups such as women, youth, LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender or intersex), persons and persons with disabilities are the hardest hit by climate change.

“Therefore, renewable energy projects, like solar and wind farms in areas such as the Northern and Eastern Cape, to eco-tourism in Limpopo and the Western Cape, rural South Africa holds immense potential for green growth and sustainability, particularly as we engage the Just Energy Transition.

“By focusing on sustainable practices, we can preserve our environment for future generations while creating jobs today.

“Many of us who have a rural background will understand that even our indigenous agricultural practices such as companion planting have been proven to promote soil health and maximise production on small pieces of land and it is still used by many farmers in rural areas,” Letsike said.  -SAnews.gov.za

dtic calls for a resilient health system

The Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Zuko Godlimpi, has called for a resilient health system that prioritises equitable access and sustainable solutions in times of crisis.

He emphasised the need for fair and sustainable measures to equip health systems with the necessary "shock absorbers" to withstand future challenges.

Godlimpi said it was clear with every health crisis faced as a country, region and world that sustainable ways must be found to strengthen health systems.

He made these remarks during his address at the Annual General Meeting of the Innovative Pharmaceutical Association South Africa (IPASA), which took place in Johannesburg on Thursday.

Reflecting on the impact of recent global health challenges, Godlimpi emphasised that these crises, while affecting all, are not felt equally.

“The severity of their impact is determined by geopolitical and economic standings, often leaving vulnerable populations to bear the brunt.

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, South Africa, under President Cyril Ramaphosa’s leadership, championed vaccine justice on the world stage, asserting that access to vaccines and essential medicines should be a universal right,” Glodlimpi said.

He called for the development of robust domestic manufacturing capabilities, especially in pharmaceuticals and medical supplies to reduce reliance on external sources during global emergencies.

The creation of a resilient healthcare system would not only secure the health of the population but would also drive job creation and economic growth.

“By investing in local manufacturing capacity, we secure our sovereignty in healthcare and strengthen our economy.

“Building a sustainable pharmaceutical industry cannot be achieved by government action alone.

“We need active participation from industry leaders, multinational corporations and local innovators alike, and I commend IPASA’s contributions to promoting ethical standards and supporting a patient-centred healthcare system,” he said.

Godlimpi mentioned that as part of South Africa’s broader industrial strategy, the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) had implemented master plans to drive growth in key sectors.

“The MedTech Master Plan, launched in May, is one such initiative, aiming to bolster local manufacturing in the medical technology sector. The development of future master plans, including those for pharmaceuticals, biologics and vaccines, depends on collaboration with multinational corporations and industry stakeholders,” he said.

Emphasising the importance of local manufacturing, Godlimpi noted that currently, pharmaceutical imports account for a significant trade deficit.

“However, with the active participation of multinationals in localisation programmes, we can create a more self-reliant healthcare system and reduce our dependency on imports.

“I also want to highlight opportunities within offset programmes, where foreign suppliers are encouraged to invest in local industry through technology transfer, local hubs, and third-party manufacturing,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za

SA working to promote inclusive growth, deal with high cost of living

SA working to promote inclusive growth, deal with high cost of living

The South African government seeks to attract foreign investment to foster inclusive growth and tackle structural barriers faced by marginalised communities.

This is according to Deputy President Paul Mashatile, who was briefing Members of Parliament (MPs) in the National Assembly on Thursday.

The Deputy President addressed several topics, including his recent working visit to Ireland and the United Kingdom.

He reflected on the keenness of investors from these two countries to tap into various South African sectors such as finance, energy, transportation and infrastructure development.

“The overall aim of this engagement was to reassure the world and investors that our country is stable and open for business. I must say, in all of these meetings, we were warmly received,” he told Parliament.

In the United Kingdom, the Deputy President said he met with more than 20 institutional investors, who are already investing in South Africa.

“We also engaged with the government of the United Kingdom to strengthen and renew the historically deep and rich bilateral relations between our two countries by exploring new initiatives and opportunities for enhancing trade and investments.”

Following the working visit, government agreed to strengthen existing initiatives while exploring new opportunities to maintain strong trade and investor interest.

“We anticipate that the upshot of our visit will contribute to an increase in the UK investors who have shown a strong interest in doing business in South Africa,” Deputy President Mashatile explained.

In addition, he said the relevant ministerial teams presented opportunities in State-owned entities (SOEs), particularly Eskom and Transnet.

“They dealt with issues of energy, rail and port projects and water infrastructure projects, including the handing of the investment project book that was developed by Infrastructure South Africa.”

However, the Deputy President believed that government alone would not be able to achieve the objectives of growing the economy and creating jobs.

“As a result, we’re taking these steps to engage the private sector, particularly also foreign investors who are interested to come and invest in our country.”

The State is working hard to ensure the regulatory frameworks throughout government are friendly for investors who can come and invest.

“So, we were quite impressed that many of those that we met were very happy. They were saying they will be taking advantage in South Africa so that we can create the necessary jobs that we want to create and empower many of our people, particularly young people,” Mashatile said.

G20 Presidency

The Deputy President is of the view that South Africa should use its G20 Presidency to prioritise its objectives of growing an inclusive economy that creates jobs.

Preparations are underway for South Africa’s G20 Presidency and hosting the G20 Summit in 2025. South Africa is expected to take over Chair of the G20 from December 1 this year from Brazil.

Mashatile said the State is determined to deal with the question of the high cost of living and professionalisation of the public service.

“But we want to use that also to benefit the continent. So, what South Africa will do will ensure that, as we Chair the G20, [this] benefits the entire African continent, and we are looking at programmes of infrastructure.

“When leaders of various countries come here, they come with huge delegations, including business people, and therefore they look for opportunities. But we will make sure that there is sound infrastructure to be able to ensure that people can have meetings throughout the country.”

The Deputy President announced that government has decided that it will concentrate meetings in one place, so the 2025 summit benefits the entire country.

Skill shortages

Mashatile acknowledged that the local labour supply does not meet the demand for management personnel, professionals, engineers, technicians, educators, and information and technology experts, necessitating the temporary importation of high-level skills.

However, various measures are being implemented to improve local skills, including updating job listings, promoting the critical skills list, and enhancing vocational training in digital skills.

Mashatile explained that the National Skills Fund directs resources to in-demand sectors and that the Human Resource Development strategy aims to match supply and demand for skilled workers.

Meanwhile, he said collaboration among industry, government, education, and non-profits is crucial for effective skills development and local employment growth. – SAnews.gov.za

dtic to launch the Khoebo Innovation Promotion Programme

The Department of Trade Industry and Competition (dtic), in partnership with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and the University of Free State, Bloemfontein Campus, will launch the Khoebo Innovation Promotion Programme (KIPP) on Monday.

This as a fund to drive innovation among early-stage Small Medium Enterprises in the Free State.

The programme was initially launched in June 2024 in Johannesburg and a series of regional launches will be taking place throughout the country.

The objective of the KIPP is to enable early-stage innovative SMEs to penetrate the market with their locally developed innovations resulting in a more competitive economic environment, thereby facilitating economic growth in the South African economy.

According to the Acting Deputy Director-General of Investment and Spacial Industrial Development at the dtic, Yunus Hoosen, the launch seeks to facilitate interactions with potential partners, beneficiaries, and supporters, building relationships that support the fund's objectives.

According to Hoosen, since the establishment of KIIP in 2020, the programme has funded more than 36 projects across various sectors of the economy, with R 148.2 million committed and R113.8 million disbursed to date.

He said the launch will highlight progress for present achievements under KIPP to demonstrate the positive impact of the programme.

“The session is intended to enhance knowledge and increate public gain and clear understanding of KIPP’s objectives and application process.

“The session will be characterised by an interactive stakeholder engagement that is expected to create public awareness and inspire participation and applications from Free State innovative SMEs eligible for funding and support under KIPP,” Hoosen said.

Local entrepreneurs and SME owners, especially those working in the technology and innovation sectors, and industry stakeholders including funders are expected to attend the event.

Potential partners who are interested in promoting economic transformation through innovation and university students and researchers who are interested in innovation and entrepreneurship will also participate in the launch. – SAnews.gov.za

Treasury optimistic about economic outlook

Location: News

Treasury optimistic about economic outlook

National Treasury expects improved growth prospects for the South African economy, despite slowing projected growth of some 1.1% in 2024 – down from the projected 1.3% earlier this year.

Real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth is projected to improve at some 1.1% in 2024, up from the 0.7% in 2023.

In its Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS), National Treasury said economic growth was being “weighed down by stop-start economic growth and stubborn inflation in the first half of the year”.

“The economy has since strengthened in response to the suspension of power cuts since March 2024, improved confidence following the formation of the Government of National Unity in June, better than expected inflation outcomes in recent months and reduced borrowing costs. All these factors are expected to continue supporting the economy over the period ahead.

“The pace of [GDP] growth is still being limited by persistent – though gradually easing – constraints, particularly in logistics infrastructure. Faster growth depends largely on maintaining macroeconomic stability, the continued implementation of structural economic reforms, improving State capabilities and supporting higher infrastructure investment,” the MTBPS stated.

Treasury explained that although risks persist, global risks are “weighted to the downside, while risks to the domestic outlook appear more balanced compared with the 2024 Budget Review assessment”.

“Global growth may weaken due to financial market volatility, tightening conditions for developing economies, slower disinflation from rising commodity prices and a prolonged contraction in China’s property sector. On the domestic front, food prices are vulnerable to weather-related shocks and logistical challenges.

“Positive domestic risks include the possibility of a quicker pace of disinflation and interest rate reductions than assumed in the baseline forecast, which would boost demand. Stable electricity supply and faster progress on reforms could boost business and consumer confidence,” Treasury said.

The department warned, however, that fiscal risks “remain significant though somewhat more balanced than a year ago” and that the materialisation of these risks could be a threat to “fiscal projections, with negative consequences for investment and economic growth”.

“Despite the downward revision to growth for the current year, there is cautious optimism for the medium-term outlook as the early benefits of reform implementation continue to materialise.

“The stabilisation of electricity supply has improved the overall investment climate. This positive momentum will be sustained by a new phase of Operation Vulindlela, which aims to accelerate structural reforms implementation.

“To support these efforts, it will be essential to maintain clear and stable macroeconomic policies while strengthening state capability and supporting investment in growth-enhancing public infrastructure,” the MTBPS stated.

Global outlook

On the international front, global growth is projected to slow marginally from 3.3% in 2023 to 3.2% in 2024 and 2025.

“Slowing inflation has opened the way for major central banks to ease monetary policy. Lower interest rates and strong investment in technology, particularly in emerging Asia, are expected to support growth,” Treasury said.

The department added that overall risks to growth are “to the downside”.

“Fiscal policy has begun to contract in some countries, in part to manage the rapid increase in sovereign debt levels since the COVID-19 pandemic, and some countries are in debt distress.

“Persistent geopolitical tensions continue to flare, with potentially far-reaching effects on global trade, and the threat of escalating conflict in the Middle East remains a concern. The years-long downturn in China’s property sector, notwithstanding new stimulus support, could continue to weaken Chinese growth,” the MTBPS stated.

Economic growth in advanced economies is forecast to reach some 1.8% in the same period with growth in emerging and developing economies – including South Africa’s BRICS partners – projected at 4.2%.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, this is projected at 3.6% in 2024 and 4.2% in 2025.

“Global equity prices have risen as inflation decelerates, accompanied by interest rate cuts that are expected to continue into 2025. Further declines in bond yields are consequently anticipated, creating a favourable environment for emerging market assets.

“Declining production and shipping of commodities, particularly oil, has dampened the outlook for some emerging and developing economies, including in Sub-Saharan Africa. Oil prices are anticipated to fall slightly in 2024, given weak global demand, despite production cuts agreed by major producers.

“Global food prices are also projected to fall, supported by record-high grain production, reducing inflationary pressures,” the MTBPS explained. – SAnews.gov.za

Government assigns funding for G20 Summit

With South Africa assuming the G20 Presidency later this year, government will assign additional funding to those departments that will be involved in the preparations.

“This is a rare opportunity that only comes around every 20 years. We intend to use our voice to promote a truly Africa-focused agenda,” Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana said on Wednesday in Parliament when tabling the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS).

South Africa will hold the G20 Presidency from 1 December 2024 to 30 November 2025.

The G20 brings together the countries with the largest economies in the world. The Member States meet annually to discuss economic, political and social initiatives.

“Various government departments and institutions will be involved, with National Treasury and the Reserve Bank leading the finance track, and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation leading the Sherpa track.

“Examples of key topics already selected include accelerating human capital development in the context of artificial intelligence, migration, technology, education and skills gaps; strengthening multilateral development banks to support the development of poorer countries, and financing climate-resilient infrastructure.

"These and other priorities will anchor South Africa’s contribution to the global policy agenda,” the National Treasury’s document on the 2024 MTBPS said.

South Africa will assume the presidency of the G20 from Brazil. It will be held under the theme: “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainable Development”.

“Our presidency is the fourth consecutive one where an emerging economy will lead the forum that influences global economic issues,” the Minister said. - SAnews.gov.za

One Week to Go Until Investors Unite at AEW

Location: News
African Energy Chamber

The largest gathering of energy stakeholders on the African continent is gearing up to welcome global and African energy stakeholders for five days of dialogue and deals. African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energy 2024 – dubbed the premier event for the African energy sector – will take place from November 4-8 in Cape Town, South Africa. The foremost platform to sign deals and further the agenda towards making energy poverty history by 2030, the conference will feature seven stages, including five content stages, two technical hubs and a full day of pre-event workshops.

With over 125 million barrels of proven oil reserves, 620 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and abundant opportunities in solar, wind and green hydrogen, Africa has the potential to become a global hub for energy. African energy demand is projected to more than double by 2050, with fossil fuels anticipated to account for up to 60% of the continent's energy mix by 2040. As such, this year's conference promises to drive a new wave of investment across the African energy sector, with industry experts and thought-leaders, African governments and national oil companies (NOCs), and energy investors leading discussions on the challenges and opportunities found on the continent.

AEW: Invest in African Energy is the platform of choice for project operators, financiers, technology providers and government, and has emerged as the official place to sign deals in African energy. Visit www.AECWeek.com for more information about this exciting event.

Africa's energy industry is both the backbone of the continent's economy and a catalyst for sustainable growth worldwide. As such, the AEW: Invest in African Energy 2024 conference will feature a series of pre-event interactive workshops, providing an opportunity for companies to share in-depth knowledge and exchange ideas with a targeted group of delegates. The workshops, hosted by companies such as Rystad Energy, NCDMB, CLG, Energeo Alliance and S&P Global Commodity Insights, will cover various topics including energizing Africa amid the global energy transition; legislative and regulatory context for promoting investment in exploration; and facilitating investments and mergers and acquisitions across the continent.

A high-level opening ceremony will kick off at the Cape Town International Convention Center (CTICC) on the first day of the event. The opening ceremony will feature addresses from Angola's Minister of Mineral Resources and Petroleum Diamantino Azevedo and South Africa's Minister of Electricity and Energy Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, and discussions with the likes of Dr. Omar Farouk, Secretary General of the African Petroleum Producers' Organization and Chairman and CEO of upstream oil company Kosmos Energy Andy Inglis. The AEW: Invest in African Energy 2024 opening will kick off a week of intense dialogue on the future of the African energy industry. The opening will also feature a number of panel discussions focusing on the vital role Africa plays in addressing global energy security, as well as keynote addresses from the heads of some of the largest energy companies in the world.

Representing the entire energy value chain from oil and gas to renewable energy to power and infrastructure, AEW: Invest in African Energy 2024 will feature a massive slate of regional ministers with the aim of unpacking the continent's strategies to make energy poverty history by 2030. Ministers from Libya and Algeria are poised to showcase North Africa's ambitious production targets while aiming to plug Europe's energy gap and enhance domestic energy access. Southern Africa's ripe opportunities in energy and mining will be put on display by ministers from Mozambique, Angola, South Africa, Zambia and Namibia while West African ministers from the MSGBC region, Nigeria, Ghana and Burkina Faso will provide updates on ongoing projects. With major producers such as Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and the Republic of the Congo (ROC) inviting investors to support diversification efforts in production and refining, regional ministers from Central Africa will share insight into available opportunities in oil and gas, mining and infrastructure. Meanwhile, as a frontier market, East Africa is incentivizing exploration in both on- and offshore basins while driving infrastructure and field development projects forward and will be represented by energy and mining ministers from Ethiopia, Uganda, and South Sudan.

Africa is accelerating the pace of upstream projects with the aim of boosting production and intra-African petroleum distribution. Across both mature and emerging hydrocarbon markets, investment opportunities continue to emerge, and as such, AEW: Invest in African Energy 2024 will feature a strong lineup of VIP speakers from energy supermajors Eni, bp, Chevron and TotalEnergies. The event will also feature representatives from some of the continent's most important energy players including Azule Energy, ReconAfrica, Etu Energias, Africa Oil Corp., Wood Mackenzie and Adarco Energy, among many more. The oil industries of African countries will be represented by NOCs from Angola, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, among others.

With two technical hubs on the exhibition floor of the CTICC, the conference serves as a prime platform for companies to provide presentations on various industry-leading technical themes. The AEW: Invest in African Energy 2024 technical track features a dedicated stage for asset owners, engineers and technology innovators to present projects, provide deep insights into cutting-edge solutions, and share best practices to foster knowledge. Attendees will gain valuable insights into the future of energy and learn about ground-breaking projects while discovering new opportunities for collaboration and investment. An exclusive exhibition-only pass grants delegates access to both the innovative exhibition floor and the technical track.

Rounding off AEW: Invest in African Energy 2024's strong program, a series of technical excursions and site visits across Cape Town offer participants the unique opportunity to gain insight into ongoing projects and developments in South Africa. A guided tour of the Hydrogen Project at the University of the Western Cape will focus on industry technology and development. The tour will also take delegates to the South African Renewable Energy Technology Center at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, which stands as the country's inaugural sustainable energy development technology facility. The excursion will feature a tour of the Atlantis Special Economic Zone, which stands as a promising landmark in Africa's energy landscape while showcasing advancements in sustainable energy solutions, economic development and innovation. Rounding off the site visits, the tour will also take participants to the Eskom Palmiet Power Station, a hydroelectric pumped storage facility that plays a key role in stabilizing the national power grid.

“AEW 2024 stands at the center of African energy and provides an unparalleled platform to forge partnerships, share knowledge and drive progress in the continent's energy sector. It is our collective responsibility to prioritize energy poverty alleviation and sustainable development, ensuring a brighter future for all Africans. We look very much forward to kicking off this exciting event and welcoming hundreds of delegates from all over the world to drive Africa's energy needs,” states NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber.

During the AEW: Invest in African Energy 2024 conference, delegates will be exposed to project updates, industry highlights, investment opportunities and strategies that address the continent's goals for eradicating energy poverty and promoting environmental sustainability. With one week to go, the conference is already stacking up to become the foremost energy event of its kind once again on the African continent.

SA prepares for UNFCCC COP29

Location: News

SA prepares for UNFCCC COP29

As South Africa prepares to participate in the UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP29), government has indicated that it will advocate for climate finance for developing nations, adaptation and international cooperation.

Addressing the national stakeholder consultation session on Monday in Johannesburg, Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, said there is a pressing need for large-scale financial support to enable developing economy nations to meet their climate targets and progress toward sustainable, low-carbon development.

“The current financing mechanisms have proven insufficient in scale and effectiveness, highlighting the urgency for a new financing model. COP29 presents an opportunity to advocate for innovative and improved financial frameworks that can mobilise substantial resources more efficiently.

“Such a model must ensure predictable, accessible and adequate funding, and address the shortcomings of existing systems and empowering countries like South Africa to implement ambitious climate actions.

“It is furthermore crucial that COP29 accelerates the application of financial, technical and capacity-building resources that will enable developing countries to meet the conditional targets outlined in their NDCs [Nationally Determined Contributions] and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs),” the Minister said.

These resources are instrumental in the efforts of developing economies' capabilities to mitigate climate risks, enhance resilience and pursue inclusive, sustainable development.

“The new collective quantified goal on finance must provide a clear and ambitious quantification of the financial support needed by developing economy countries to implement their climate commitments and development plans — including NDCs, NAPs, low-emission development strategies, and other relevant policy frameworks, as well as key multilateral goals endorsed since Glasgow,” the Minister said.

He said this goal should also reflect inclusive just transition pathways, aligned with each country's nationally determined socio-economic development priorities.

“Access to finance must be significantly scaled up to offer new additional and predictable funding that is fit for purpose. Specifically, we need grants and highly concessional financing that can be effectively allocated to create enabling environments for rapid investments.

“By de-risking investments and creating new asset classes for clean technologies, we can unlock and leverage greater amounts of public and private finance,” the Minister said.

The UNFCCC COP 29 will convene from 11 - 22 November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

COP29 will in addition aim to resolve outstanding issues under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

“Finalising the operational details of both market-based and non-market-based mechanisms will be crucial. These cooperative frameworks are vital not only for reducing emissions globally, but also for fostering international collaboration that can spur innovation and help developing economy countries achieve their climate objectives.

“By establishing transparent and robust mechanisms under Article 6, we can enable countries to work together more effectively,” the Minister said.

This cooperation will facilitate technology transfer, attract additional finance, and support sustainable development initiatives.

“For South Africa and other developing nations, resolving these issues is essential to unlocking new opportunities for climate action, enhancing our capacities and accelerating progress toward our NDCs,” the Minister said. - SAnews.gov.za

Hazelmere Dam to improve water supply in KZN North Coast

Location: News

Hazelmere Dam to improve water supply in KZN North Coast

Water and Sanitation Minister, Pemmy Majodina, has emphasised the important role the eThekwini Metro, iLembe and KwaDakuza Municipalities in the North Coast have to play in order to ensure the reticulation of water to households.

This follows the commissioning of the world’s highest piano key weir dam, Hazelmere Dam, to improve water supply in the three municipalities.

Majodina commissioned the world’s highest piano key weir [a low dam built across a river to raise the level of water upstream or regulate its flow] dam located in the Mdloti River, KwaZulu-Natal, on Friday.

A piano key weir is a nonlinear, labyrinth-type weir well suited for rehabilitation projects due to a relatively small footprint and the ability to pass large discharge for lesser upstream-head values when compared with other weird types.

The commissioning of the state-of-the-art dam comes after the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) successfully completed a project to raise the dam wall by seven metres to increase storage capacity, and to augment water supply to areas including Verulam, Groutville, Blythedale and Ballito.

Speaking during a community engagement, Majodina emphasised the important role that municipalities have to play in order to ensure the reticulation of water to households.

“The Department of Water and Sanitation upgraded the Hazelmere Dam wall to meet the needs of the increasing population in the North Coast, as it is our role to ensure bulk water supply. The concerned municipalities should now roll up their sleeves to ensure that water is directed to households,” Majodina said.

The North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal has experienced rapid growth in recent years, especially in the housing sector, which resulted in an increased demand for potable water.

Majodina said Hazelmere Dam forms part of the country’s state-of-the-art dams.

“Hazelmere Dam can now be measured against world class standards due the type of spillway selection, technology and innovation used in implementing the project.”

The raising of the dam wall will address water challenges in some parts of the three municipalities.

The project scope of the work includes the raising of the dam wall by  seven metres (from 86m to 93.00m); the construction of and retrofitting a piano key weir (PKW) onto an existing dam spillway structure; the installation of 83 rock anchors, as well as foundation grouting and other minor related works.

The dam has an uncontrolled PKW spillway. This was done to ensure that the dam wall withstands extreme concentration of floods of between six and eight hours for the dam catchment area.

Some of the employed technologies undertaken to upgrade the dam wall include the world’s highest piano key weir; the world’s largest anchors were installed to improve stability of the concrete gravity dam wall structure, and the largest capacity post-tensioning stressing jacks were deployed during construction.

The technologies employed also included the use of innovative data management software for real-time monitoring of anchor performance and 3D digital crack meters.

The department said the upgrading of the wall assisted with the creation of employment opportunities for 187 locals, including 16 women and 53 young people.

“The total number of small, micro and medium enterprises (SMMEs) appointed were 11, with two women-owned. In addition, the successful training of 14 engineers took place during the project, with some subsequently obtaining professional registration, marking a significant achievement in capacity building,” the department said. – SAnews.gov.za

SA on the right track towards improved public transport

SA on the right track towards improved public transport

President Cyril Ramaphosa says while there is still much work to do, South Africa is on track “towards a public transport system that is safer, more efficient and more affordable”.

He was addressing the nation through his weekly newsletter on Monday.

“While we have achieved important progress in restoring our freight and passenger rail systems, we have much further to go. We will need far more investment, more effective use of technology and closer collaboration between all stakeholders.

“We are now on the right track towards a public transport system that is safer, more efficient and more affordable – and that supports the growth of an inclusive economy, reduces poverty and creates employment,” said the President.

The President highlighted that an “efficient, safe and affordable movement of people and goods around the country is essential” for the country’s economic growth and jobs.

“Goods that are produced by our workers need to move from mines, factories and farms to our country’s markets and international markets through our ports. People need to be transported to workplaces, clinics, hospitals and schools. When our transport system works well, then the cost of doing business is lowered and our country’s products and services are more competitive,” he said.

President Ramaphosa acknowledged that transport costs are too high which keeps some South Africans having to spent large portions of their income on transport.

“Affordable public transport helps to reduce the cost of living for millions of South Africans. Our public transport system is in a poor state due to a lack of investment over many years, as well as theft and vandalism, especially during the COVID pandemic.

“Without affordable and reliable alternatives, households spend a large proportion of their income on transport. Fixing public transport therefore plays a big role in reducing poverty.

“Much progress has been made in restoring urban passenger rail to full service. The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) has to date restored 31 out of 40 priority rail corridors back to operation. By March this year, 40 million passengers were using public trains, nearly three times more than the year before,” he said.

Looking to the future

President Ramaphosa said although government is hard at work dealing with the current challenges, work is also underway to secure the future of transport through the development of a National Rail Masterplan.

This, the President said, will “cover passenger rail in our cities, including rapid rail” and high-speed rail. This work required for the development of the plan is expected to conclude by the end of next year.

“The achievement of our ambitious targets will require considerable investment in infrastructure, rolling stock and signalling. We will need to make use of new technologies, including artificial intelligence, in areas like cargo tracking, passenger ticketing and securing critical infrastructure.

“The government alone will not be able to carry the scale of the investment needed. That is why we are working to mobilise private sector investment in rail and port operations, while ensuring that the infrastructure remains State-owned,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za

SA well placed to be major hub in clean tech value chain

South Africa is well placed to become a hub for components and equipment manufacturing in the clean technology value chain, including battery technologies for energy storage, electric mobility, material handling and a range of other applications.

This is according to the Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Andrew Whitfield, who addressed the opening of the R150 million Balancell state-of-the-art Gigafactory in Cape Town.

Balancell is a future-focused, innovative technology business that develops smart batteries designed to manage and protect themselves, and report their use and condition remotely.

“The South African government is working closely with the industry to identify opportunities to deepen the battery technology value chain and to position South Africa as a manufacturing hub on the African continent.

“A recent benchmarking study, supported by the World Bank Group, shows that South Africa is a competitive manufacturing destination, and offers a compelling value proposition for companies in this sector, as demonstrated here,” Whitfield said.

To support these ambitions, Whitfield said there was a number of policies and incentives in place that will enable the growth of this key sector. He said Cabinet has already approved the New Energy Vehicle White paper, setting out the objectives for this sector.

“Being able to witness an investment from homegrown companies in this sector is truly inspiring. Balancell’s investment of R150 million in this factory is not only directly in line with the strategic priorities of the Government of National Unity, but also a demonstration of the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit that defines many South African businesses.

“We are motivated by the company’s prospects for growth and further job creation in the coming years. The 75 existing jobs created in this [Gigafactory], supporting more than 1 500 indirect jobs, is a clear indication of the multiplier effect that can be achieved by strengthening and growing the manufacturing sector,” Whitfield said.

A Gigafactory is a huge factory that produces very large numbers of batteries for electric vehicles.

Whitfield highlighted the importance of building a strong base of skilled South Africans.

“Expanding industry partnerships with leading universities and research institutions to enhance local research, development and testing of components is critical to the industry. I am, therefore, encouraged that you are already working with the Nelson Mandela and Stellenbosch Universities, as well as the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research,” the Deputy Minister said.

He described the opening of the Gigafactory as an affirmation of the importance of building industrial capacity and working together to achieve the shared vision of South Africa being a global player in the battery value chain.

He further said the investment is an example of South African resilience, innovation and entrepreneurship. – SAnews.gov.za

Transforming lives with beauty training

By Sinovuyo Mfiki

In Kwa-Ndebele in Mpumalanga, beautician Precious Mabotja is making a mark with her business, Prexxy Beauty Academy and Spa.

The 30-year-old entrepreneur, who founded her business in 2023, is not just providing beauty services; she is on a mission to empower individuals and fight poverty by offering valuable education and skills.

The academy’s course range includes nail technology, waxing, massage and make-up.

After studying cosmetology at Tshwane South Technical Vocational Educational Training College in Pretoria, Mabotja polished her skills over seven years, working as a massage therapist and waxing specialist in various salons across Pretoria and Sandton.

These experiences fuelled her desire to start her own business, which also uplifts those around her.

“After working in salons, I realised I had the experience and knowledge to create something meaningful for my community,” she reflects.

She said finding the right space for her vision was not easy. As a start, the Public Works Department allowed her to use a classroom in a former primary school. She converted it into a centre for learning and growth.

“I started the business after doing a learnership and I was earning about R1 400 a month, so I had to save every month. Although that was not even enough to maintain me, I pushed for what I wanted,” said Mabotja.

Currently, Prexxy Beauty Academy is home to fourteen students. Mabotja recently awarded two individuals, one was homeless and the other a recovering addict, with scholarships from Prexxy Beauty Academy.

Mabotja sees the academy as a beacon of hope. “It is not just about beauty it is about rebuilding lives.”

However, the journey has not been without its hardships, highlighting that starting a business can be tough, especially when support is limited.

“Sometimes you do not get the backing you need simply because you are new. People first need to see your work before they believe in you,” she shares.

Despite these challenges, her dedication and vision continue to inspire confidence in her students and the community.

With three employees, including herself, she is not only changing lives through education, but also creating job opportunities.

For more information about the Prexxy Beauty Academy, contact Precious Mabotja at 079 405 5214 or https://prexxy.co.za or info@prexxy.co.za.

CSIR Transport Safety Lab to help reduce road crashes

Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Blade Nzimande, has unveiled the Transport Safety Lab at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) to enhance road safety policies and products on the continent.

Unveiled on Thursday, the laboratory includes a stationary driving simulator located on the CSIR’s Scientia campus in Pretoria, along with a vehicle equipped with sensors to gather data on driver behaviour and road conditions.

CSIR Smart Society Group Executive, Dr Sandile Malinga, stated that the lab will collect and analyse road safety data from the real world and simulations, which can be used to improve transport safety policies and products.

“This dual approach gives the CSIR Transport Safety Lab a unique sweet spot in the industry, merging laboratory precision with practical, on-the-road experimentation,” he said, adding that it will ultimately help reduce fatalities and the socio-economic burden of road crashes.

The CSIR Senior Researcher, Lerato Kgoa, explained that the lab’s testing vehicle, known as the Drive Lab, can gather live data from South Africa’s roads, enabling researchers to analyse signage visibility, road conditions, and driver behaviour patterns under various circumstances.

Meanwhile, the driving simulator known as the Simulator Lab, will play a complementary role.

According to  Kgoa, the simulator can recreate hazardous driving conditions in a controlled environment and will allow researchers to observe how drivers respond to dangers like adverse weather conditions, poor visibility or challenging road surfaces.

“By simulating these scenarios without the real-world risks, researchers can gather valuable data on driver behaviour, decision-making processes, and potential improvements in road safety measures,” she added.
The lab features specialists in transport safety, human behaviour, and crash analysis. It has already conducted a successful pilot study on how drivers perceive fluorescent yellow.

Malinga explained that the lab’s research supports the Safe System Approach that South Africa has adopted, where road users, policymakers, transport planners, vehicle manufacturers, infrastructure designers, and road agencies all share the responsibility for improving road safety.

According to the CSIR, this approach is a globally recognised framework endorsed by the United Nations.
CSIR CEO, Dr Thulani Dlamini, said original equipment manufacturers, transport operators and private investors can use the new facility to test and refine new products such as vehicles, road restraint systems and digital technologies.

“Early involvement ensures that industry leaders gain a competitive edge as they co-develop cutting-edge solutions with the CSIR’s research experts,” Dlamini stressed.

“We encourage industry partners to join us in reducing road crashes and ensuring sustainable road infrastructure in South Africa and beyond.”

He believes that the lab will also enable evidence-based policymaking aligned with South Africa’s National Road Safety Strategy 2016-2030 and that it will work with continental bodies such as the Road Traffic Management Corporation and the Namibia Road Authority.

“The lab’s insights are set to inform regulatory frameworks, support law enforcement strategies, and influence infrastructure development,” Dlamini added.

Zimbabwe Establishes Local Laboratory for Polio Surveillance

Location: News

World Health Organzation (WHO) - Zimbabwe

In a significant step towards strengthening its public health infrastructure, Zimbabwe established a dedicated laboratory for the analysis of polio samples collected through environmental surveillance (ES). Previously, these samples were sent to South Africa for testing, resulting in a turnaround time of approximately 21 days.

With financial and technical support from the World Health Organization (WHO), the newly renovated laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art technology testing equipment and staffed by highly trained personnel. WHO further provided training to 10 laboratory scientists to run the new laboratory and locally carry out environmental samples testing. This local capability will significantly reduce the time required to detect and respond to potential outbreaks of polio.

Three experts from the African Polio Laboratory network, proficient in WHO ES testing methods for poliovirus, were identified by WHO Regional Officer for Africa (AFRO) to provide the training needs to th University of Zimbabwe (UZ) where the laboratory is situated. The team includes Shelina Moonsamy as the Team Lead (Head of Polio Laboratory, NICD, Johannesburg, South Africa), James Peter Eliku (ES Technical Expert, Uganda Virus Research Institute, Entebbe, Uganda) and Thabo Mashupye (ES Technical Expert, NICD).

"The establishment of this laboratory is a major milestone in our efforts to safeguard the health of Zimbabweans," said Mr Paradzayi Chibukira, Technical Supervisor at the Zimbabwe National Virology Polio Laboratory at UZ.  "By reducing the turnaround time for laboratory results, we can more effectively implement prevention and control measures to prevent the reintroduction of polio into our country."

Environmental surveillance for polio is a critical component of global efforts to monitor and eradicate the polio. It involves collecting and analyzing sewage and other environmental samples to detect the presence of the poliovirus, which can indicate circulation of the virus in the community. This method complements traditional surveillance through the Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) surveillance system and provides a broader view of potential outbreaks.

Polio is a highly contagious viral disease that can cause paralysis, especially in children. While Zimbabwe has been polio-free for many years, the risk of reintroduction remains, particularly due to the ongoing global efforts to eradicate the disease.

With support from WHO, Zimbabwe launched its environmental surveillance programme in 2023, beginning with sites in Harare and Chitungwiza. This initiative was part of a broader strategy to strengthen disease monitoring and improve response capabilities. The introduction of environmental surveillance in these initial sites marked a key step in the country's commitment to enhancing its public health infrastructure. Additional sites were established in other major cities, including Bulawayo, Gweru, and Victoria Falls in 2024. This expansion reflects Zimbabwe's proactive approach to disease monitoring and its determination to safeguard public health.

"We applaud and fully support Zimbabwe's decision to set up the laboratory for polio surveillance and this development not only enhances the country's capacity for timely and accurate detection of poliovirus in the environment but also strengthens the overall public health infrastructure,” said Mr Kenneth Chindedza, WHO Zimbabwe Technical Officer for Logistics and Supply Chain.
