SRD Grant system remains intact – Minister Tolashe

SRD Grant system remains intact – Minister Tolashe

Social Development Minister Sisisi Tolashe has reassured social grant recipients that the grant system's integrity remains intact, supported by various control measures and enhanced security.

The Minister was briefing the media on Wednesday on the outcomes of the independent investigation into the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD grant) in Cape Town.

“We assure our clients that the integrity of our system remains intact, with various control measures and enhanced security in place to ensure efficient service delivery.

“SASSA will continue to invest in its systems to enhance support and positively impact the lives of our clients. We strive to balance security and improvement with client interaction, accessibility,” she said.

This comes after two first-year students from Stellenbosch University raised the alarm over vulnerabilities in the South African Social Security Agency’s (SASSA) application systems, sparking a parliamentary investigation.

Their allegations, shared on various media platforms and during a presentation to the Portfolio Committee on 23 October 2024, questioned the integrity and security of SASSA’s digital grant platforms.

The two students found that fraudsters were using unsuspecting citizens' identity numbers to apply for the SRD grant and received the funds in bank accounts using the same ID numbers. This potentially eliminated deserving people from accessing government relief.

In response to the allegations, Parliament recommended a comprehensive investigation of the Social Relief of Distress Grant system and all other grant systems administered by SASSA.

Parliament’s directive reflected concerns over the integrity and security of SASSA’s digital systems across various grant types, including but not limited to Child Support, Disability, Old Age Pension, and Foster Child grants.

As a result, the Minister of Social Development committed to a thorough review of its entire grant infrastructure, focusing on identifying and mitigating potential vulnerabilities, ensuring the security of beneficiary data, and safeguarding public resources.

The Minister told the media that key findings in the investigation revealed that there were several medium vulnerabilities identified.

“As technology evolves rapidly, it is crucial for any organisation to stay abreast of advancements, continuously monitor risks, and adapt to ensure not only compliance but also excellence in using technology to drive and implement new solutions.

“We strive to balance the need for security with the equally important need for client accessibility, ease of use, and service excellence,” she said.

The Minister acknowledged that technological advancements brought risks such as cyber threats and vulnerabilities. The SRD program, like many others in South Africa's retail and banking sectors, has faced challenges like identity theft.

Since 2023, Tolashe noted that SASSA has intensified its efforts against fraud, working closely with law enforcement agencies.

“We have introduced facial biometrics through our electronic Know Your Client program and strengthened relationships with other government entities and the banking industry.

“Our 'Know Your Grant Status' programme helps individuals determine if identity theft has occurred in the SRD environment. Our staff is committed and currently performing outreach programmes over weekends to assist our clients in addressing and swiftly resolving these issues,” she said.

The Minister acknowledged the audit report and the work done to assist department in its oversight role and SASSA in strengthening its systems.

She emphasised that SASSA management was currently reviewing the report, which aligns with the findings of the penetration tests and vulnerability scans.

“We will meet with the auditors to discuss the report and provide a comprehensive response. SASSA will continue to support the auditors in completing their work,” she said.

The Minister highlighted that the COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges, particularly for SASSA who had to implement the SRD grant.

“We had to adopt a unique approach since potential applicants were not part of any existing government grant support programs, and COVID-19 regulations restricted physical interactions.

“Despite these hurdles, we successfully implemented an online program and disbursed the first grant on 15 May 2020, reaching 6 million new clients in record time,” Tolashe said. – SAnews.gov.za

Eskom hails meter upgrade project as a success

Location: News

Eskom hails meter upgrade project as a success

With Eskom hailing the completion of its pre-paid meter upgrade project as a success, the power utility has requested the approximately 1.7 million “zero buyers” to upgrade their meters before the deadline.

“The result of this technology changeover has brought Eskom around 400 000 previous zero buyers to become new paying customers and provided us with a wealth of data to bring further zero buyers into legitimately purchasing electricity,” Eskom Group Chief Executive Dan Marokane said on Wednesday during a media briefing in Cape Town.

All prepayment meters have to be upgraded to the Key Revision Number version 2 (KRN 2) as the STS technology for prepayment meters will stop accepting new credit tokens. This is due to the expiry of these vending codes.

This will mean they will stop dispensing electricity after the existing credit is used up, thus making the meter inactive.

“Eskom has successfully completed its pre-paid meter Key Revision Number (KRN) rollover project. Starting off with a customer base of 6.91 million prepaid customers, all customers have been converted to KRN 2.

“A data cleaning exercise fully updated the incomplete details of 341 000 customers to bring Eskom’s base to 7.25 million. As of 24 November 2024, approximately 5.5 million customers (which includes the around 400 000 zero buyers, who have become paying customers) have successfully rolled over and are transacting on KRN 2.

“Eskom is currently observing a decrease in the zero buyer numbers to around 1.7 million from the previous 12-month rolling average of 2.1 million. We request these customers to do what is right by Friday, 13 December 2024, by visiting their nearest Eskom sites,” the power utility said.

Eskom said all paying customers who had bought electricity before the deadline and have had their meters made KRN 2 compliant and who are experiencing difficulty will be assisted to complete the process and will not be unfairly penalised.

These customers are advised to use Alfred the chatbot, Eskom Contact Centre: Interactive Voice Response (IVR) and WhatsApp.

“For those zero buyers who bought electricity before the deadline and were unable to load their meters, they must bring their slips/tokens to the nearest Eskom Hub by Friday 13 December 2024 to be assisted. Customers are urged not to wait for the last day of the extension.

“Zero buyers who bought electricity before the deadline but have a meter-related matter such as a lost, bypassed, or tampered meter, must come forward at Eskom centres by Friday 13 December 2024. Their individual situations will be assessed, tamper fines issued if required and meter updates and replacements will then be scheduled,” Eskom said.

Those who have come forward but did not buy or attempt to buy electricity tokens by 24 November 2024 are encouraged to purchase electricity tokens before 13 December 2024.

Their meters will be audited, and tamper fines and meter replacement costs will be assessed and issued accordingly. They can come forward at any time.

“In the past 10 days, we saw zero buyers coming forward in huge numbers wanting to buy electricity and do the right thing. We will continue to treat these users with dignity and respect as we resolve these issues for all of them who did the right thing.

“We acknowledge also that this was a complex process presenting a challenging set of issues and was at times fraught and we continue to monitor and stabilise the system to ensure a smooth customer experience,” Eskom’s Group Executive for Distribution, Monde Bala, said.

Marokane said the power utility was doing everything that is practically possible to make users of electricity pay for it in the interest of those who already pay for electricity, maintain the sustainability of Eskom to drive the economic growth of South Africa and reduce the burden on the taxpayer. - SAnews.gov.za

Technology can be used as a tool for change, protection, empowerment

Technology can be used as a tool for change, protection, empowerment

While the rise of the digital economy and use of technology have introduced new avenues for perpetrators to harm and abuse women and children, Deputy President Paul Mashatile says the same technology can be used as a tool for change, protection and empowerment.

Speaking at the national launch of 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, in Rustenberg in the North West on Monday, the Deputy President called for further collaboration to harness technology and innovation to combat gender-based violence (GBVF) and accelerate a gender-inclusive digital economy.

He called for zero tolerance toward gendered violence in online and digital spaces, noting that the increase in the use of technology in peoples’ daily lives has introduced new avenues for perpetrators to harm, exploit, and abuse women and children.

The Deputy President said digital spaces can become breeding grounds for violence, from cyberbullying and online harassment to the dangers posed by social media platforms.

However, citizens can also harness the same technology as a tool for change, protection and empowerment.

“From using mobile apps that provide immediate support to victims and survivors to artificial intelligence that can help us understand and curb the pandemic, the potential is vast. Mobile apps, [including] helplines, and emergency response systems provide a direct link to safety, offering quick access to shelters, medical care and legal assistance.

“In South Africa, initiatives such as the GBV Command Centre - a 24/7 digital and telephonic support service - have proven instrumental in helping victims and survivors. We must leverage these advancements to enhance our prevention strategies, improve our response mechanisms, and ensure that no one is left behind,” he said.

The Deputy President said the internet should be used as a place where everyone can feel safe and respected.

“Access to technology and digital skills can open new economic opportunities, enabling financial independence and resilience. As we embark on these 16 Days of Activism for no Violence Against Women and Children, let us harness the power of technology and innovation to drive systemic change.

“Let us not forget that technology can be a force for good. It has the potential to save lives, connect victims and survivors to support, and hold perpetrators accountable in ways that were previously unimaginable,” Deput President Mashatile said.

Observed annually from 25 November to 10 December, the 16 Days of Activism campaign calls upon every individual to take a stand against the injustices that continue to plague society.

During the campaign period, the country raises voices to draw attention to the persistent violence against women and children.

The Deputy President said a full year of action is required to combat the scourge, not just during these 16 days.

This year's campaign, observed under the theme: “30 Years of Advancing Collective Action to End Violence Against Women and Children”, serves as a reminder of the progress made by the country and the work that still lies ahead.

The Deputy President acknowledged that society has for many years been grappling with the issue of gender-based violence and femicide, which includes the high rate of rape, femicide, and domestic abuse, and the fight is still not over.

Both Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) and the Human Science and Research Council (HSRC) have reported concerning statistics on GBV in South Africa.

StatsSA has revealed that one in three women aged 16 and older has experienced physical violence, while one in five has been sexually abused.

The first-ever national Gender-Based Violence survey conducted by HSRC in 2022, also revealed that over 33% of South African women have experienced physical violence in their lifetime, while 9.8% have faced sexual violence.  The study showed that approximately 7.3 million women have experienced physical abuse, while 2.1 million have experienced sexual violations.

Mashatile said government was committed to taking the findings of the surveys seriously and would integrate them into the work of government.

He said the findings will feed directly into the National Strategic Plan on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (NSP on GBVF), which provides the roadmap for government's national response. – SAnews.gov.za

Root causes of gender based violence must be looked at

Location: News

Root causes of gender based violence must be looked at

Minister in the Presidency responsible for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, has highlighted the need for a multifaceted approach that addresses the root causes of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), while providing support services for survivors and holding perpetrators accountable.

Chikunga was speaking at the National Launch of the16 Days of Activism for no Violence Against Women and Children campaign, held at the Rustenburg Civic Centre, in the North West, on Monday.

This year's 16-days campaign is being held under the theme: “30 Years of Advancing Collective Action to End Violence Against Women and Children", which builds on previous efforts to tackle the root causes of GBVF, fostering a culture of positive masculinity, gender equity, and economic empowerment for women and children.

The sub-theme for the campaign is “Harnessing technology and innovation to combat Gender-Based Violence and accelerate a gender inclusive digital economy”.

This year marks 70 years since the adoption of the historic Women’s Charter in 1954 - 68 years since the historic Women’s March, and almost half a century since the United Nations’ first World Conference on Women held in 1975, in Mexico City.

The country also marked 30 years since the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action towards, amongst others, the elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls.

Chikunga said the multifaceted approach includes legal reforms, education programs, economic empowerment initiatives, and community-based interventions.

She said through the 16 Days of Activism campaign, government aimed to rally all of society to reflect, prevent and put an end to the historic and ongoing channels through which violence against women is being reproduced at a systemic, structural, household and individual level.

“We are, therefore, deeply honoured to be among dedicated thought leaders, activists, researchers, and communities of practice who are tirelessly working to address these pressing and pervasive injustices facing women from all walks of life,” Chikunga said.

The Minister commended the commitment of traditional leaders to the fight against GBVF, particularly in rural communities. This follows a recent meeting held by the department and the House of Traditional and Khoisan leaders.

“We have also held very fruitful consultations with the South African Council of Churches, as part of our efforts to rally the religious community against the scourge of gender-based violence.

Chikunga said the study on the prevalence of GBVF offered critical insights into the pervasive nature of the scourge in the society.

The recently released South African National Gender-Based Violence Prevalence Study: A Baseline Survey on Victimisation and Perpetration, conducted by the Human Sciences Research Council, revealed the grim reality that about 7 310 389 million women, aged 18 years and older, have experienced physical violence in their lifetime.

As government recalibrates policies and preventative strategies, Chikunga said the country was reminded to place GBVF within the historical struggle of women to be recognised, first and foremost, as human.

“Only when our dignity is restored can we hope to end this system of domination and subordination that thrives on exploiting, undervaluing, and violating women as a way of life. Afterall, GBVF is hardly a random occurrence—it happens within the context of uneven power relations, the privileging of certain voices over others, toxic masculinity, and oppressive cultural practices,” Chikunga said.

The Minister noted that the rise in substance abuse, including alcohol and drugs had significantly exacerbated GBVF.

She announced that over the next five years, the department would prioritise the transfer of land to women, reiterating that land is a productive asset and “basis of all wealth”.

“Our campaign demands all hands-on deck. It requires political will, adequate resources, and sustained commitment to bring about meaningful change, with increased investment directed toward this critical intervention,” Chikunga said. – SAnews.gov.za

Kubayi pledges to hand over houses to GBVF victims

Kubayi pledges to hand over houses to GBVF victims

As part of the 16 Days of Activism for no Violence Against Women and Children campaign, Human Settlements Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi, has pledged to hand over 16 houses to the victims of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) throughout the 16-day period.

Kubayi said the initiative underscores the department's commitment to providing tangible support to victims and survivors of GBVF.

“By providing safe housing, the goal is to reduce survivors' reliance on their abusive partners, promoting independence and dignity. It also aims to accelerate collective action and whole-of-society accountability to end violence against women and children.

“Empowering women economically is also crucial in the fight against GBVF, and a safe and secure home serves as a foundation for individuals to build their lives and become productive members of society,” Kubayi said.

According to the Minister, when women are economically resilient, they gain the freedom to leave harmful situations, take control of their lives, and create a better future for themselves and their children.

Kubayi said during the campaign, the department aims to raise awareness and highlight practical efforts to reduce the vulnerability of women affected by GBVF by providing safe shelter.

Deputy President Paul Mashatile is today leading the national launch of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign, which is taking place in the Rustenburg Local Municipality in the North West.

This year's campaign is being held under the theme: “30 Years of Advancing Collective Action to End Violence against Women and Children", which builds upon previous efforts to tackle the root causes of GBVF, fostering a culture of positive masculinity, gender equity, and economic empowerment for women and children.

The sub-theme for the campaign is: “Harnessing Technology and Innovation to Combat Gender-based Violence and Accelerate a Gender Inclusive Digital Economy”.

Kubayi, alongside Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Tasneem Motara and Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza will also hand over Breaking New Ground houses to vulnerable groups at the Helderwyk housing project in Ekurhuleni.

The handover of houses in Gauteng is a significant initiative by the department to support the 16 Days campaign.

The department has developed the Special Housing Needs Policy to assist victims of GBVF.

To further demonstrate the commitment to support vulnerable groups, the department has produced an awareness advertisement highlighting interventions to address GBVF.

“The advert will be launched on today, marking the beginning of the campaign and will be aired on SABC TV platforms, ensuring widespread reach and visibility,” the department said. – SAnews.gov.za

SA’s MSME celebrated for their resilience and job-creation efforts

In a room alive with entrepreneurial energy and determination, South Africa's Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) were celebrated for their resilience and job-creation efforts at the Presidential MSMEs and Cooperatives Awards.

Hosted by the Department of Small Business Development, the awards aim to spotlight and reward South Africa’s top-performing MSMEs, cooperatives, and ecosystem enablers driving growth and transformation.

The Minister of Small Business Development, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, led the event at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, with President Cyril Ramaphosa delivering the keynote address.

The ceremony honoured businesses that embody innovation, commitment to local development, and entrepreneurial spirit.

Two Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to business icons Dr. Mike Nkuna, the founder and Executive Chairman of the Masingita Group of Companies, and Dr. Gloria Serobe, the co-founder of Women Investment Portfolio Holdings (Wiphold) and Chancellor of the Tshwane University of Technology.

Arion Power, a start-up founded by three young entrepreneurs, Brian Gadisi, Alan Gie, and Themba Hadebe, emerged as a major winner.

Their product, WiBox, a mini-UPS that powers routers during outages, has earned them two prestigious awards -- Youth-led MSME of the Year and MSME of the Year.

Speaking to SAnews, Gadisi expressed pride in their achievement.

“This award reassures the hard work we've put into research and development, the sleepless nights, and our efforts to crack technology often dominated by the East and West. It shows that Africa has the capability to innovate on par with global leaders,” he said.

Another standout was Kedibone Segole, the 30-year-old founder of Moipone Aesthetics, a black-owned township start-up based in Mabopane, Pretoria. Her company, which manufactures high-quality natural personal care products, won the Township MSME of the Year award and a cash prize of R200 000.

Speaking to SAnews, Segole encouraged aspiring entrepreneurs to start small and stay persistent.

“What I would like to say to young and upcoming entrepreneurs, along with unemployed graduates and youth, start something, work on it and believe in it. Push. Your breakthrough will come. Whatever you have, the little you have, use it. It can make you reach boundaries that you have never even imagined.

Segole said winning the award means that they are recognised, acknowledged and important.

“The President acknowledges our efforts, and he believes in the strides that we are making in an effort to come out of poverty, unemployment and the social ills we are affected by in the townships. It's in our hands. Vuk' uzenzele (get up and do it for yourself)!” she said.

Segole revealed her business journey began with just R600 from a UIF payout after losing her job in 2016. With support from stakeholders like the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) and Innovation Hub, her perseverance has transformed her business into a success story.

“I was fortunate enough that along the way there has been government assistance from the NYDA, as well and the Innovation Hub, among other stakeholders. As a started, I used the little that I had and look where it has gotten me today,” she said.

Another inspiring recipient was Dimakatso Kanyane, the 32-year-old founder of Dillets Sanitary Towels. Her innovative product, designed for African women, won the Start-up Business of the Year Award.

Motivated by her own experience with her cycle, Kanyane developed a product that addresses a critical need.

Kanyane told SAnews that the award was a full circle moment for her.

“This award affirms a lot of things, that no matter how hard the journey is, with authenticity and perseverance, you can overcome any obstacle. To those who are aspiring to be on this journey -- stay ambitious, trust and believe that perseverance will lead you to the fulfilment of your dreams.

“I used to have heavy flows and severe period pains and there wasn’t a sanitary towel that catered to my specific needs. It was this search that eventually led me to the development of Dillets Sanitary Towels, a sanitary towel designed for African women by an African woman,” she said.

The Presidential MSMEs and Cooperatives Awards underscore the vital role of small businesses in driving economic growth, fostering innovation, and creating sustainable opportunities across South Africa. – SAnews.gov.za

SA sets sights on industrialisation opportunities presented by decarbonisation

SA sets sights on industrialisation opportunities presented by decarbonisation

South Africa is making the most of the available opportunities to drive industrialisation through global decarbonisation efforts, says Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau.

Tau on Wednesday led a team of officials from the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic) to a joint briefing session of Parliament’s Portfolio Committees on Trade and Industry and Science, Technology and Innovation. The aim of the session was to engage on South Africa’s Green Hydrogen Commercialisation Strategy and the White Paper on Electric Vehicles.

Tau told the Members of the Portfolio Committee that South Africa has committed itself to reducing greenhouse gas emission, as envisaged in the national Just Energy Transition. Above its own contributions to reduce emissions, South Africa has partnered with the rest of the world to decarbonise.

Tau said South Africa has to decarbonise its own economy but also position itself to commercially benefit from the global shift to greener technologies.

“Green hydrogen presents an opportunity to export natural resources such as sunshine and wind, which South Africa has in abundance.

“The global demand for green hydrogen presents ample industrialisation opportunities not only for South Africa but for other African countries, so we need to collaborate and integrate efforts to drive the industrialisation agenda for the continent as a whole.

“The speed with which we move will determine whether we are able to take full advantage of the transition or we are left behind,” he said.

Linked to decarbonisation efforts is the worldwide move to electric vehicles, which Tau described as advancing at a fast pace.

Through the White Paper on Electric Vehicles and support for the automotives industry, South Africa is embracing the transition and adapting its Automotive Strategy to current global trends.

The White Paper on Electric Vehicles outlines a commitment to ensuring that the transition is not just about decarbonisation but is also leveraged for growth by deepening the automotive value chain, fostering local industry growth, and aligning with economic priorities, the approach aims to be pro-growth and pro-investment.

Regarding the carbon intensity of the South African economy, Tau indicated that government is  cognisant of the fact that some of the measures, such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism introduced by the European Union, do require that the country challenge them at the level of the World Trade Organisation, as they likely to have a negative impact on economic growth efforts. – SAnews.gov.za

Call for collaboration to use technological innovations to address sanitation challenges

Location: News

Call for collaboration to use technological innovations to address sanitation challenges

Water and Sanitation Deputy Minister, David Mahlobo, has called for enhanced collaboration between government, the private sector and civil society to use technological innovations to help tackle the sanitation-related challenges experienced in parts of the country.

Mahlobo made the call at the Next Generation Water-Efficient Sanitation Technologies Investment Summit held in Sandton, Johannesburg, on Tuesday.

The summit, which coincided with World Toilet Day, was hosted by the Water Research Commission (WRC) in conjunction with South African Sanitation Technology Enterprise Programme (SASTEP) to highlight the various innovative solutions for sustainable sanitation and water security.

Mahlobo called for the investment of sanitation infrastructure and technological improvements to address sanitation challenges.

“We need significant investments in modern sanitation infrastructure and creative, forward-thinking solutions. Together, we can drive the change required to overcome the challenges in the sanitation sector,” Mahlobo said.

Mahlobo acknowledged the WRC for its contribution in initiating innovative projects geared towards finding alternative sanitation solutions.

The innovations include, among others, the aptly-termed Next Generation Sanitation Technologies which will not only address the basic human right to sanitation but also align with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) objectives.

Mahlobo said the reinvented toilets will offer significant advantages over traditional sanitation methods such as water-efficient and energy-neutral systems, which drastically reduce the environmental footprint of sanitation infrastructure.

The reinvented toilets will also safely treat human waste without the need for conventional sewage systems, protecting communities from waterborne diseases and can be deployed in schools, clinics, and public spaces where sanitation infrastructure is often inadequate.

“Furthermore, adding to the technological innovations, the Department of Water and Sanitation has developed the National Faecal Sludge Management Strategy.

“The strategy is aimed at providing guidance to the sector on safe management of faecal sludge to enhance operation and maintenance of on-site sanitation systems, prevent groundwater contamination, safeguard public health, and protect the environment from pollution throughout the sanitation service chain,” Mahlobo said.

More work to be done to bring dignified sanitation services

While noting significant progress made towards addressing the sanitation backlog and providing appropriate sanitation to poor households since 1994, Mahlobo said much more work still needs to be done to bring about more dignified sanitation services to the communities.

Through government and stakeholders’ efforts, the number of households with access to proper sanitation has improved by 22.4% between 2002 and 2021, an increase from 61.7% to 84.1%, with most improvement made in Eastern Cape and Limpopo provinces.

“Despite the notable work, we do admit as government that we need to keep our sleeves rolled up to ensure that all citizens of this country get to experience the pleasure of dignified sanitation facilities,” Mahlobo said. – SAnews.gov.za

Vodacom Group (www.Vodacom.com) has partnered with technology providers to provide young people on the continent with access to digital skills as part of its commitment to driving digital literacy for Africa's next generation. Together with AWS, Microsoft, Skillsoft and other collaborating organisations Vodacom aims to bridge the digital skills gap across eight African countries and upskill 1million young people by 2027.

The Vodacom Group Digital Skills Hub is available in South Africa, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Mozambique, Lesotho, Egypt (Talimy), the Democratic Republic of Congo (VodaEduc), and in Kenya (Industry Digital Talent Program) to empower the next generation of digital innovators, enabling Africa's digital society and leveraging existing e-learning platforms in the respective markets.

According to the International Finance Corporation (IFC), over 230 million jobs will require digital skills in Africa by 2030, yet the continent faces a significant gap in supply and demand for digital expertise.

“The African continent is plagued in many countries with high levels of unemployment, gender inequality, income disparity and limited access to education, healthcare and essential services. These challenges inform our purpose and drives our strategy to connect for a better future, leveraging digital technologies to drive inclusion into the future for the betterment of people. The launch of the Digital Skills Hub is testament to our commitment to pioneering the path to a digital and more inclusive Africa”, says Shameel Joosub, Vodacom Group CEO.

The Vodacom Digital Skills Hub provides access to self-paced, digital skills training for those aged between 18 and 35. This is in addition to Vodacom Group's existing free, e-learning platforms across its markets. E-learning and digital classrooms have made it possible for students in remote or underserved areas to access quality education with platforms such as Talimy in Egypt, e-Fahamu in Tanzania, VodaEduc in the Democratic of Congo (DRC), Faz Crescer in Mozambique and an e-learning platform in South Africa, providing a wealth of online resources, which cater to different learning needs.

“We are extremely excited about this initiative which seeks to inspire the next wave of digital innovators. Our main aim with this initiative is to not only address the digital skills shortage on the continent but to also nurture a pipeline of young talent and in turn advance Africa's digital future, boosting opportunities for empowerment in an inclusive digital economy,” adds, Matimba Mbungela, Chief Human Resources Officer at Vodacom Group.

The Vodacom Digital Skills Hub is designed to empower the next generation, to consider a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and entails fun and engaging practical digital skills training for young people on the continent. AWS Educate is one of the first programs to be offered through the Digital Skills Hub and an additional program to Vodacom's various existing online learning platforms. AWS Educate offers beginners an extensive library of self-paced online training that covers a range of topics from cloud fundamentals to artificial intelligence and machine learning.

“With over 400 million young people between the ages of 15 and 35 in Africa, the continent has the youngest population in the world. Digital is the new currency, it is therefore imperative that we invest in them and provide them with the necessary digital skills that will not only boost their growth and development but that of the continent too,” concludes Joosub.

President Ramaphosa reflects on ’successful’ G20 Leaders' Summit

By Gabisile Ngcobo

Rio de Janiero - President Cyril Ramaphosa says that the two-day G20 Leaders’ Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has been a success.

He noted that, despite some members holding dissenting views, a broad consensus was ultimately reached.

“The beauty of this summit is that it allowed everyone to express their views and articulate dissenting views or voices on issues. What we established at this summit is that even as a member or country dissents it will not stop the show,” the President said on Tuesday.

The news broadcaster CNN reported that despite signing the G20 final declaration on Monday, Argentine President Javier Milei told the other Heads of State that he disagreed with some aspects of the document.

Reports said President Milei opposed several issues, including the restriction of freedom of expression on social media, vulnerabilities to the sovereignty of global governance institutions, unequal treatment under the law, and the belief that increased state intervention is the solution to fighting hunger.

He also distanced himself from some text related to the 2030 Agenda.

“What we are learning is that in the end, when there is broad consensus - what we would call sufficient consensus - a declaration should be adopted,” President Ramaphosa said.

South Africa’s commander-in-chief said he would want this practice to be adopted by G20 countries.

The President addressed the media at the conclusion of the G20 Leaders’ Summit, which ended yesterday.

“Yes, there’s always an opportunity to have frank discussions about geopolitical issues, some of them quite testing and touching, such as what is happening in Palestine and Gaza, particularly in the Middle East and Ukraine.”

He argued that there was no avoidance of the key and thorny issues in discussions.

The President highlighted several key “takeaways” from the gathering and the achievements of the G20 Brazil Presidency. These include a focus on taxing the super-rich, reforming the governance of global institutions and financial organisations, as well as addressing climate change.

“Overall, this has been a very successful G20 Summit, and it lays a very good foundation for us as South Africa, as we now focus on having the next G20 Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa,” he added.

Yesterday, Brazil officially handed over the historic G20 Presidency to South Africa at the closing ceremony of the annual summit.

READ I Brazil officially hands over G20 Presidency to South Africa

President Ramaphosa announced that South Africa had adopted the G20 Presidency theme of “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability”.

“Whatever pressure we may be facing is a pressure that is exerted on us by the conditions in which people in the world find themselves, particularly in the Global South, poverty, inequality, and joblessness.

“Those are the pressures that we are under, which we’ve got to address,” he told journalists.

He said key priorities include ending hunger, addressing climate change, and focusing on digital technology, particularly artificial intelligence.

South Africa will also advocate for the African agenda and the interests of the Global South.

“We expect to have a successful summit in Johannesburg, and we’re really glad that many countries that were here are keen and willing to come and support us as we lead up to the summit in Johannesburg.”

He expressed eagerness to collaborate with United States President-elect Donald Trump as South Africa prepares for the summit and handover to the United States in 2026.

“We’re going to be working together for a solid two years, if not three. I’m hoping that diplomacy and the various protocols that exist amongst global leaders as well as countries are going to underpin the way that we work.

“I think we’ll have a good summit in South Africa, with the participation of the United States, and with President Donald Trump coming to South Africa.

“I’ve already invited him for a State Visit, and we look forward to welcoming him.” – SAnews.gov.za

Agreements signed with battery energy storage projects

Location: News

Agreements signed with battery energy storage projects

Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, has signed two project agreements and the commercial close of two projects appointed as preferred bidders under the first Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP) Bid Window 1.

According to the Department of Electricity and Energy, the two projects secure “a total of 360 MW/1440 MWh storage capacity under the country’s first grid-scale bid window”.

“Both projects, developed by EDF International and their project partners, Mulilo, Gibb-Crede, Pele Green Energy, and a community trust, will be located in the Northern Cape Province and will contribute a total of 180 MW/720 MWh storage capacity on the national grid.

“Oasis Aggeneis, with a total capacity of 77MW/308MWh will be located at Aggeneis Sub Station close to the town of Aggenys. Oasis Nieuwehoop, with a capacity of 103MW/412MWh, will be located at Nieuwehoop Sub Station close to Kenhardt. Project construction is expected to take no more than 24 months and the storage capacity is expected to come online no later than November 2026,” the department said in a statement on Monday.

The two projects are expected to attract investment of some R4.7 billion with local entity participation of around 42.23% and Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) ownership of 40% achieved across both projects.

“In support of the current economic challenges that South Africa is facing, the two projects have committed a total of 487 job opportunities (measured in job years) for South Africans, which includes 301 jobs during construction and 186 jobs during operations.

“The projects have committed to spending 20% of total project costs on local content during construction, and 20% on local content during operations.

“The projects have also made commitments of over R43 million over their 15-year lifetime, to be spent in areas such as Skills Development, Supplier Development, Bursaries for Black Students, Enterprise Development, and Socio-Economic Development initiatives,” the department explained.

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

The department explained that BESS technology has a critical role to play in “grid operation by storing energy during periods of less demand for electricity and releasing that energy when needed” – like during peak time.

“In addition, BESS provides grid stability through Ancillary Services for the System Operator. BESS further allows for more integration of renewable energy onto the grid,” it said.

To take advantage of this technology, at least four preferred bidders were announced in November last year with all four reaching commercial close.

“A further fifth project was appointed later [on] 28 March 2024, following value for money negotiations. This last project is finalising preparations and final conditions to reach commercial close in early 2025.

“A further two Battery Energy Storage bid windows [are] currently underway. Bid Window 2 is currently in evaluation phase with [a] bid announcement expected within the next few weeks. Bid submission for Bid Window 3 is planned,” the department concluded. – SAnews.gov.za

World leaders pledge to help developing countries fight poverty

By Gabisile Ngcobo

Rio de Janeiro - Chinese President Xi Jinping has announced initiatives to support global development and strengthen the Global South as a significant player within the Group of 20 (G20).

Speaking at the G20 Leaders’ Summit on Monday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, President Xi emphasised that China was committed to fostering a fair world centred on mutual development.

The President commended Brazil’s G20 Presidency for placing fighting hunger and poverty at the top of the agenda and the decision to establish a Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty.

“From Hangzhou to Rio, we have been working for the same goal, that is, to build a just world of common development,” he said.

However, he said to build such a world, leaders needed to channel more resources to such fields as trade, investment and development cooperation, as well as strengthen development institutions.

“There should be more bridges of cooperation, and less ‘small yard, high fences’, so that more and more developing countries will be better off and achieve modernisation.”

He called on the opening, inclusive and non-discriminatory environment for international economic cooperation and integration in digital, smart and green development to bridge the North-South gap.

President Xi said China was committed to ensuring that the Global South research centre currently under construction is effective.

He emphasised that the US$20 billion allocated for development funds would be utilised effectively to support developing countries and enhance practical cooperation in key areas, including poverty reduction, food security, and the digital economy.

“China has decided to join the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. We support the G20 in continuing to convene the Development Ministerial Meeting and will stay a committed host of the International Conference on Food Loss and Waste.”

Meanwhile, he announced that China, alongside Brazil, South Africa and the African Union, was proposing an Initiative on International Cooperation in Open Science to help the Global South gain better access to global advances in science, technology and innovation.

“China is pursuing high standard opening up and unilaterally opening our doors wider to the least developed countries (LDCs),” he explained, adding all LDCs having diplomatic relations with China zero-tariff treatment for 100% tariff lines.

“From now to 2030, China’s imports from other developing countries are likely to top US$8 trillion.”

He called on leaders to promote a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalisation to bridge the North-South gap.

United States President Joe Biden highlighted his administration’s efforts to combat global hunger and poverty.

On Sunday, as part of his historic trip to the Amazon, President Biden announced that the United States had fulfilled the historic pledge to increase the country’s international climate finance to over $11 billion a year by 2024 – making the United States the largest bilateral provider of climate finance in the world.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed poverty, saying it was an important issue and that achievements in this area would significantly contribute to sustainable progress.

During his remarks, he spoke about India’s efforts, notably how the country collectively worked to remove 250 million people from the clutches of poverty.

The Prime Minister highlighted how India was providing free rations to 800 million people, thus strengthening the fight against hunger.

He touched on the initiatives being undertaken to ensure top quality and affordable healthcare for the poor and elderly, steps to boost financial self-reliance among women and ensure food as well as nutritional security.

“India believes in the approaches of ‘Back to Basics’ and ‘March to Future’. That is why we are emphasising organic farming, popularising millets and encouraging climate-resilient crop varieties.”

The G20 leaders will discuss global solutions to eradicate hunger, reduce social inequality, and promote sustainable development and food security to ensure a fairer and more equal future.

French President Emmanuel Macron said they were counting on Brazil's leadership to ensure that the G20 moves forward to address global crises and challenges.

“No country should choose between fighting poverty and protecting the planet,” he said, adding that France will do everything in their power to address these issues. – SAnews.gov.za

Celebrating the Trailblazers Shaping Africa’s Tech Future

Location: News
Africa Tech Festival

Africa Tech Festival (www.AfricaTechFestival.com) 2024 wrapped up last week, marking the most successful edition in the event's 27-year history. Organised by Informa Tech, the event is Africa's most extensive showcase of enterprise tech innovation, bringing together influential founders, business leaders, policymakers, investors, and startups.

Building on the momentum of the event's first two days, the final day kicked off with an opening address by Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, City of Cape Town. Commenting on the host city's standing as a leading tech hub hosting 51% of South Africa's startups, he emphasised Cape Town's focus on skills development in AI and tech in particular, reiterating his excitement at “making Cape Town a focal point for African innovation and setting an example of how tech can empower communities and social change.”

LeadersIn Africa Summit

Preceding the main event, the by-invitation LeadersIn Africa Summit was an exclusive VIP series of executive discussions designed to facilitate actionable dialogue between 100 of the continent's most influential tech players. Panel sessions, fireside chats, networking events, and roundtables provided a platform for sharing insights and collaborating on solutions to Africa's tech challenges. Topics ranged from emerging technologies to AI for startups, ESG, regulatory frameworks, fundraising strategies, and support for founders and investors.

Skills development and knowledge sharing

The final day of Africa Tech Festival 2024 also featured several keynote fireside discussions across the various event streams. Skills development was a theme of the day, including a masterclass session on AI content creation, a security fundamentals certification training session, and a technical workshop where participants worked in groups to develop scaling strategies for AI pilot projects.

Key Highlights

The USAID Young African Leaders Initiative(YALI) hosted the YALI Alumni Expo and Trade Show running alongside Africa Tech Festival. The YALI Expo  connected and celebrated YALI alumni making positive change in their communities by creating  these networking opportunities and showcasing innovations for sustainable impact.

One of the key topics focused on the gender gap and a panel discussion on day 4 centred around   Empowering Female Founders: Narrowing the Gender Gap in Venture Capital.  The challenge that female-founded companies face is that only 16% of tech funding and 8% of total funding go to these companies due to bias, lack of female representation among venture capital decision-makers or insufficient diversity in teams and investment criteria. It was proposed that female representation in venture capital leadership needed to be increased, more training and support was essential to encourage female founders to build networks and strengthen pitch preparation and business strategies.

The Africa Tech Festival Awards took place on the penultimate  night,  at the Bay Hotel in Camps Bay, Cape Town. The awards celebrated the  exceptional technological advancements and expertise across the continent and highlighted the pioneering work that is transforming lives and industries across Africa, inspiring future innovation and growth. Some of the winners included:

  • Telco of the Year: MTN Ghana
  • Innovation for Impact: WIOCC Group
  • CXO of the Year: Patrick Benon, Orange Cameroon
  • Changing Lives Award: Orange Burkina Faso
  • Creative Visionary Award: Brighton Mhlongo
  • AIConics Award: GRIT - Gender Rights in Tech

“Africa Tech Festival 2024 exceeded our expectations in terms of engagement, active participation by key industry stakeholders, and the sheer scale of the event. As we wrap up the 2024 event, we'd like to express our gratitude to all our sponsors and supporters, with special mention to the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies and the City of Cape Town.

As the largest and most influential telecoms and technology event in Africa, with an audience that spans the entire ICT ecosystem, we're proud of the progress made in opening dialogue, sharing insights, and working together to advance Africa's digital transformation journey,” said Informa's James Williams, Event Director of Africa Tech Festival.

Report highlights SA’s challenge with pollution

While government has made strides in environmental compliance, significant work is needed to address pervasive issues like untreated sewage discharge to land, freshwater, and coastal areas.

This is according to the 2023/24 National Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Report (NECER), which was launched on Monday by Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Narend Singh.

The report was launched at the Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Lekgotla (ECEL), in Drakensburg, KwaZulu-Natal.
“The report shows the Green Scorpions’ (environmental compliance authorities) progress, yet challenges remain, particularly when it comes to attending to pollution, which impacts air quality, illegal waste disposal, and land degradation resulting from the proliferation of invasive plant species.

“In light of financial constraints, environmental compliance authorities must be innovative, focusing resources on the country’s most urgent environmental threats,” the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment said.

The NECER outlined the achievements, challenges, and key findings in environmental compliance, showcasing areas where improvements have led to a decrease in enforcement actions due to increased compliance with the Environmental Management Inspectorate (EMI) commonly known as the Green Scorpions.

“With 5 643 facilities inspected across various sectors in 2023/24, the report reflects a 30% increase in inspections over the previous year, particularly for reactive inspections when responding to complaints.

“This intensified monitoring underscores a stronger culture of accountability and environmental stewardship and indicates focused attention on reported non-compliance incidents,” the department said.

The report shows a decrease in criminal enforcement actions, with registered criminal dockets dropping from 885 to 634, and the total value of admission of guilt fines declining by 15% compared to the previous year.

However, higher sentences for criminal convictions demonstrate a shift towards impactful enforcement. Noteworthy cases include:
•    State v Shadrack Matambo; Thabani Lusiko Sibanda; and Sibusiso Leonard Khumalo: Sentences of 10, 12 and eight years direct imprisonment for cycad-related theft and illegal activities.
•    State v Lekwa Local Municipality: A criminal conviction and fine of R70 million to address sewage pollution and repair infrastructure over three years.
•    State v R Ngulube: A 10-year direct imprisonment sentence for illegal possession, export of abalone, and facilitating money laundering.

“While the country celebrates 30 years of freedom this year, the efforts by the Environmental Management Inspectorate demonstrates its unwavering dedication to uphold the principles codified in the Constitution, despite the wide-ranging challenges which they are confronted with daily," the department said.

The Lekgotla provides an invaluable platform to map out strategies and sets a course for future enforcement efforts.

The ECEL was held under the theme: "The Science of Environmental Compliance," with discussions centred on leveraging technology and innovation to enhance the inspectorate’s work, direct limited resources effectively, and address the country’s most pressing environmental risks.

The multi-stakeholder event brings together the Green Scorpions, which comprises of national, provincial, and local authorities and other critical role players.

SA seeks balance between livelihoods and renewable energy ambitions

SA seeks balance between livelihoods and renewable energy ambitions

By Gabisile Ngcobo

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - President Cyril Ramaphosa has highlighted the importance of considering the livelihoods and jobs of ordinary people, as the energy sector transitions towards renewable sources.

“As we can go towards renewable energy, there must be a just transition. There is a transition that we in South Africa have to go through and it must be the type of transition that advances the interests of ordinary people, as it grows the economy.

“The opportunities are enormous, and we just need to utilise the enablers to ensure it benefits everyone,” the President said on Sunday.

President Ramaphosa spoke in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen jointly launched the ’Leveraging the Potential of Renewables – The Road to Johannesburg’ campaign.

The campaign was launched during a panel discussion with Hugh Evans, co-founder and CEO of Global Citizen.

The Global Citizen initiative, along with the 2024 G20 Presidency, supported by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, brought together over 450 world leaders, innovators, and advocates on the eve of the G20 Leaders’ Summit, which kicks off today.

Their goal is to promote urgent action to combat poverty and tackle the climate crisis.

“As we go to renewables, relying more on the sun, wind and hydro, we’ve got to make sure that as people lose jobs and as their livelihoods are eroded, and as towns where we used to draw fossil fuels [become] deserted, we have to make sure that the transition for ordinary people becomes a transition that they benefit from,” President Ramaphosa stressed.

The Head of State believes workers should not fear job loss without being skilled in new technologies.

A prime example of South Africa's commitment to skilling workers in new technologies is the partnership between the Mpumalanga Provincial Government (which is home to about 80% of power stations in South Africa), the Presidential Climate Commission, the Climate Investment Fund and the World Bank. The entities are working together to explore plans on re-skilling and upskilling the most vulnerable in the labour force and supporting small businesses and co-operatives in local communities.

In last year's State of the Province Address, former Mpumalanga Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane assured citizens that plans towards the Just Energy Transition will leave no one behind.

READ | Just energy transition to be inclusive

South Africa faces challenges due to its reliance on fossil fuels, while witnessing growth in the climate sector.

Currently, only 3% of global investments in renewable infrastructure are allocated to Africa, while the European Commission aims to triple renewable energy investment by 2030.

“Africa is well endowed with sun and wind, and that can be utilised to good effect to grow our economies to ensure that at a social level, people have access to electricity,” President Ramaphosa said.

However, he stated that this does not come cheaply and requires financing and clear decisions by leaders, not only on the African continent but globally as well.

He emphasised the need for collaboration between African countries and developed nations to fulfil commitments and secure essential funding and technology.

According to the President, energy drives growth and economies.

The 12-month ’Leveraging the Potential of Renewables – The Road to Johannesburg’ campaign aims to scale renewable energy in Africa by leveraging South Africa’s G20 Presidency.

The initiative seeks to tackle issues of inequality and promote sustainable development, to provide access to power to millions who currently lack electricity.

According to President Ramaphosa, South Africa's G20 Presidency will also focus on the importance of solidarity and equality in addressing global challenges, particularly in the context of Africa’s history of inequality.

Preparations are underway for South Africa’s G20 Presidency and the hosting of the G20 Summit in 2025. South Africa is set to assume the Chair of the G20 from Brazil on 1 December this year.

The country’s first citizen also touched on the role of the upcoming 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in focusing on a just transition and the importance of global support for this transition.

In her address, Von der Leyen outlined the European Green Deal and its goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. While underscoring the importance of global cooperation, she said there was a need to ensure no continent is left behind, particularly Africa.

“But if we want to be successful in fighting climate change and protecting nature, we must think globally.

“We will only be successful if we leave no continent behind, and [ensure] the transition in Africa is a just one.

“Africa has, as we said, all the resources necessary in abundance -- sun and wind, and 60% of the best solar places worldwide. But only 3% of the global investments in infrastructure for renewables go to Africa. And with that, the task is clear. We must step up,” Von der Leyen said. – SAnews.gov.za

All children have the right to a quality education, to grow up in a safe and secure environment and to be protected from harm. Children's rights are human rights, enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child.  Yet too many children cannot realize these rights and face exclusion, discrimination, violence, and exploitation. Children have the right to grow up in a world where every child is valued, included, empowered and protected.

As children of Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa Zambia and Zimbabwe, we recognize all the work done our respective Governments to promote the rights of children. But there is still much work to do to ensure that the rights of all children to a quality education are protected, promoted and fulfilled - without discrimination.

Our unified Call-for-Action on World Children's Day, aligned with the specific theme of the 2024 Regional World Children's Day commemorations "Educate and Skill the African Child for Posterity" is to drive progress in the following areas. Our Call-for-Action is informed by broad national consultations involving more than 5000 children across our seven countries, organized among our peers with the support of our Governments and civil society partners.

We, the children from Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe, call on our leaders to listen to our voices, include us in decisions which affect us, adopt and implement our solutions and invest in our present and future.

We call on our Governments to take concerted action on the following issues:

To ensure access to Education:

  • Ensure all children – including children from disadvantaged backgrounds - have access to quality education, providing financial support for those in need and addressing the specific needs of girls and boys to access education.
  • Strengthen and enrich curricula to ensure inclusion of practical life skills that enhance daily living and learning to earning. Curriculum content should be designed to ensure relevance and meet the current demands of children.
  • Quality education needs to be innovative, allowing critical thinking and creativity, ensuring appropriate learning materials and a supportive learning environment, and facilitating engagement and practical skills development. Governments should provide this in consultation with children.
  • Educators should be equipped to deliver quality education, making learning fresh, and impactful, and delivered in pleasant environments and infrastructure, conducive to learning, including well-equipped labs and libraries.

For an inclusive and quality education system:

  • Provide children with equal opportunities for education, including children with disabilities and those in hard-to-reach areas.
  • Ensure integrated learning environments, allowing students to interact and collaborate with peers with special education needs from a young age instead of being separated.
  • Employ well-trained and qualified teachers for better learning outcomes; increase teacher salaries and benefits to improve retention.
  • Construct child- and disability-friendly infrastructure and provide sufficient teaching resources, including solar power for uninterrupted learning, build schools closer to communities or provide transportation for students.
  • Involve parents, guardians and community leaders in creating an inclusive education system – including adolescent girls at risk of drop out of school, children involved in child labour, minority groups and children with disabilities – to ensure no child is left behind.

To ensure relevant education, including emerging issues:

  • Ensure an education that is impactful and useful to us in the current modern and developing world; an education with a positive impact in our lives, be it present or in future as we transition to the world of work; the curriculum should equip us with relevant skills to navigate life from a very young age.
  • We want a curriculum that is aligned with the rest of the world and puts emphasis on digital literacy. This will be achieved by improving ICT infrastructure in all schools.
  • Expand and enhance climate change education programmes and teach us about climate change, the environment, responsible and sustainable consumption and production as core subjects in class and/or school clubs focusing on climate.
  • Ensure we have access to education in a safe learning environment, also during emergencies.

***

Children's Pledge of Commitment

As children from Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, we stand united in our belief that our voices and actions matter. We are committed to being responsible citizens, ready to support and work alongside our Governments, leaders, parents and organisations to create a better future for all children in our region.

We the children the children from Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe commit to:

  • Actively participate in child parliaments, school councils, junior councils as well as other student forums, and take full advantage of opportunities to voice our ideas about curriculum and school programmes. By sharing our perspectives, we will help create an education system that meets our needs.
  • Advocate for the development of public libraries and recreational facilities, using these spaces for personal growth and encouraging others to engage in learning, sports, and creative activities that benefit our well-being.
  • Make our schools and communities more inclusive by embracing diversity, offering support, and advocating for accessibility in all areas. Together, we can create an environment where everyone can thrive, belong and feel safe.
  • Use technology responsibly and enhance our digital skills. We will engage in ICT programmes, share our knowledge with peers, and encourage others to join us in developing the skills needed to succeed in a digital world.
  • Learn and educate ourselves and others on climate change and commit to sustainable practices in our daily lives. Through small acts like reducing waste and participating in community clean-up efforts, we can help protect our planet for generations to come.
  • Make our classrooms more collaborative, helping our teachers, and supporting our peers, in a quest to foster a culture of mutual respect and encouragement, to overcome challenges together.
