Infrastructure maintenance placed under the spotlight

Infrastructure maintenance placed under the spotlight

Thorough infrastructure maintenance to ensure sustainable water supply to residents of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality came under the spotlight at a meeting between Water and Sanitation Deputy Minister, Sello Seithlolo and municipal councillors.

Seithlolo made the call during a meeting with municipal councillors, held in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, on Friday.
The engagement comes after Seitlholo accepted an invitation from municipal councillors to discuss some of the ongoing issues that have been affecting the wards.

These include ongoing water challenges affecting some parts of the municipality, which are exacerbated by ageing infrastructure, rapid urbanisation, floods, theft, and vandalism of water infrastructure.

During the meeting, councillors raised concerns of sewer spillages in the communities, which cause health hazards and water pollution that end up affecting recreational facilities including the beaches in the city.

Seitlholo called on the municipality to address issues that affect water delivery services to communities and the travel sector.

In addition to infrastructure maintenance, he also encouraged the municipality to conduct a full investigation into illegal connections.

“I therefore call on the municipality to be committed on issues of water and sanitation. Municipalities should improve on their investigations related to the issues so that they can be resolved,” Seitlholo said.

He assured the municipality of further provincial visits and engagements, to ensure tangible changes pertaining to water and sanitation challenges.

The Deputy Minister also held a meeting with Umhlanga Tourism Association (UTA) to discuss issues relating to water and sanitation affecting the tourism hub in the Umhlanga area. – SAnews.gov.za

Lamola embarks on a working visit to the United States

The International Relations and Cooperation Minister, Ronald Lamola, has arrived in Washington DC, in the United States on Thursday for a weeklong working visit.

South Africa enjoys strategic relations with the United States and has strong political, economic, and social ties.
According to the department, bilateral cooperation with the United States covers various issues aligned with South Africa’s domestic priorities and the National Development Plan (NDP).

America is also the leading source of foreign direct investment, a market for value-added exports and agri-products, technology transfer, development assistance, investment finance, skills development, and tourism for South Africa.

These investments, according to the department, make a significant contribution to supporting government efforts to reduce poverty, unemployment and inequality.

During the visit, which will conclude on Thursday, 19 September 2024, the Minister will participate in meetings and attend various events.

These include the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 53rd Annual Legislative Conference Roundtable where delegates will also discuss critical issues facing Africa and the diaspora solutions, and the United States policy toward Africa.

He is also expected to meet with the business stakeholders, including the United States Chamber of Commerce.
George Washington University will host Lamola for a panel discussion on United States-South Africa relations.

Framework to revitalise Eastern Cape agriculture sector

Location: News

Framework to revitalise Eastern Cape agriculture sector

Eastern Cape Rural Development and Agrarian Reform MEC, Nonceba Kontsiwe, says the province has adopted the Agriculture Investment Framework to revitalise the agriculture sector.

Commenting on the commercialisation of Eastern Cape’s agriculture, Kontsiwe noted that despite having the highest livestock population, the province only contributes 8% to the country's livestock Gross Domestic Product.

There are over 10 000 hectares of irrigable land with water rights in irrigation schemes that have the potential to produce dairy, vegetables, fruits, grains, and fodder.

“However, this land is not fully utilised, and optimising its use could greatly enhance sector performance in terms of growth and employment,” Kontsiwe said.

She said commercial farmers constitute 9% of the farming population, generating 71% of the income and employing 60% of the agricultural labour force, significantly driving the agricultural sector's performance.

On the other hand, she said, smallholder producers, representing 91% of the farming population, generate 29% of the income and provide 40% of the jobs.

“The growth of smallholder farmers is impeded by high barriers to entry, including high fixed costs (land, equipment, and operations), inadequate on and off-farm infrastructure, limited funding options tailored to their needs, rising input costs, and poor logistics.

“The challenge is how to effectively commercialise land owned by Black farmers to enhance the economic performance of the agricultural sector to build industries for inclusive growth,” the MEC said.

Policy

Kontsiwe said government has approved a progressive State Land Lease and Disposal Policy, aimed at releasing land to land reform beneficiaries to attract investment, improve productivity, and enhance competitiveness on their farms.

She reported that out of all the farms distributed in the Eastern Cape, 100 were classified as commercially viable in various agricultural sectors.

These include citrus in Amathole and Sarah Baartman; deciduous in Sarah Baartman; wool and beef across the province; and grain in OR Tambo, Alfred Nzo, Joe Gqabi, Chris Hani, and Amathole.

The department’s strategy for commercialising 100 farms involves repurposing the Eastern Cape Rural Development Agency (ECRDA) to serve as a trade and business aggregator for various commodities.

“The ECRDA will be empowered to enter into 10-year commercial agreements with all 100 farms to provide holistic support to them and provide them with offtake contracts to supply their produce to ECRDA processors, which are planned to be located in RED Hubs and industrial parks such as Queens Industrial, Butterworth Industrial Park, Fort Jackson, and Dimbaza.

“These processors will process primary produce into food and feed products for domestic markets. For export-oriented products, the ECRDA, supported by the ECDC, will aggregate produce from these farms and explore trade opportunities in African, Chinese, and Middle Eastern markets,” Kontsiwe explained.

The MEC added that the department will partner with other sector departments to facilitate private sector investment by securing water rights for irrigation, obtaining environmental authorisation, acquiring title deeds, or securing long-term land use rights.

The department will also work towards consolidating and coordinating government investments towards land reform farms.

The targeted departments include Agriculture; Land Reform and Rural Development; Forestry, Fisheries and Environment; Water and Sanitation and Economic Development, Environment Affairs and Tourism.

“The department will collaborate with the Regional Land Claims Commission to secure Land Development Grants for 38 properties in land claims settlements [and] this will benefit communities in areas like Ncora, Magwa, Dwesa-Cwebe, Mkhambathi, and more.

“The department will develop an infrastructure business plan to access funding and unlock R220 million from the Land Development Grant,” Kontsiwe said. – SAnews.gov.za

Peace and safety are key to growing tourism sector

Peace and safety are key to growing tourism sector

With the country commemorating Tourism Month in September, peace and safety have been highlighted as catalysts to grow the tourism sector, says Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Deputy Mayor, Babalwa Lobishe.

At an event to celebrate Tourism Month which is commemorated annually in September, Lobishe called on all stakeholders to collaborate in ensuring peace and safety.

Tourism Month promotes domestic travel, showcasing the country's diverse tourism offerings, and to highlight the sector's significant contribution to the South African economy.

This year’s Tourism Month is celebrated under the theme: "Tourism and Peace-30 years of connecting people and cultures”.

Lobishe said the metro’s focus area for this year is not only tourism safety but also diversification of tourism products to bring about memorable experiences for tourists.

"We have a past where there was no peace and safety was only for a few. Some people were not allowed to travel freely and be tourists in their own country.

“In recognising our past and embracing our future, we need to work collaboratively to create a conducive environment for the world to come to our city and celebrate with us,” Lobishe said.
|
To deliver a memorable Tourism Month, Lobishe said the metro has mobilised critical stakeholders in the areas of business, and these include safety and security such as the South African Police Service (SAPS), private security, the tourism industry like the Eastern Cape Tourism Board, and relevant government entities and local based tourism practitioners.

Lobishe said the municipality prides itself as the best in delivering cultural experiences, “an element that sets the metro apart from its competitors.”

She highlighted another positive addition to the metro tourism offerings, the booming cruise industry. Last year, the metro received 36 cruise vessels with a 45 80 0 combined number of passengers, with an estimated economic impact of R77 million.

This year, the metro expects a slight increase of 40 cruise vessels.

“We also want to improve on the number of days these cruise vessels spend in our metro so that more jobs can be created. It then becomes important that we improve on our offerings,” Lobishe said.

Tourism ambassadors

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Economic Development, Tourism and Agriculture Shuling Lindoor said that as part of the metro’s efforts to improve on tourism safety, the directorate has hired more tourism ambassadors to work with the security cluster.

"Our primary focus is safety. We have put resources to complement the Tourism Month Safety Plan that is already in place, led by SAPS and the metro police. For tourists to have a memorable experience, safety is paramount,” Lindoor said.

Events

Meanwhile, as part of this year’s Tourism Month celebrations, the metro will host a National Cruise liner workshop to build relations and engage tourism operators on some of the metro’s unique tourism offerings.

The workshop will be held from 26-27 September and the Green Flag Trials - an offering that seeks to promote sustainable tourism - will be held on 28 September at the Van Stadens Reserve.

“Nelson Mandela Bay tourism offering would not be complete without good traditional food and heritage. Kasi Food Festival will give tourists that special experience that will also offer a good platform for township tourism to benefit.

“This event will be held in Zwide Township on 28-29 September 2024. The month will be closed on a high note at the Mendi Arts Centre through an interactive of the story of New Brighton,” the municipality said.

In between the planned major events and programmes, the metro will be partnering with different entities to deliver an exciting Tourism Month, and these include Tourism Awards, Premier Soccer League games and cultural events. – SAnews.gov.za

Funding Agencies Brief Committee About Tourism Business Development Programmes

Location: News

Republic of South Africa: The Parliament

The Portfolio Committee on Tourism today met with the National Empowerment Fund (NEF) and the Small Enterprise Finance Agency (SEFA) to discuss the different tourism development programmes the two entities are implementing on behalf of the Department of Tourism.

The NEF gave an update on the Transformation Fund, a funding initiative targeting tourism businesses in previously disadvantaged communities. The entity's Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr Mzwamadoda Dayimani, explained that the partnership and co-funding arrangement between NEF and the department applies to all transactions supported under the programme.

“The department funds through a grant, limited to R5 million per transaction and if a transaction value is more than R10 million, the NEF funds the excess. The NEF portion is funded through a repayable loan,” Mr Dayimani said.

A number of the projects supported through this Fund are still in the development stage and servicing their loans. After paying off the loans, the projects are expected to be self-sustainable and create more jobs. The funding also comes with post-investment support to ensure they meet their financial targets and repay the loans.

SEFA Acting CEO, Mr Nkosikhona Mbatha, presented a progress report on the Tourism Equity Fund (TEF) to the committee. This Fund seeks to increase growth and transformation and stimulate more inclusive participation in the tourism sector in line with the Tourism BBBEE Sector Codes. It also addresses funding challenges faced by enterprises in the tourism sector.

TEF's core funding activities focus on accommodation, hospitality and related services, travel and related services, and tourism-related products that support the development of the tourism sector in South Africa.

The committee Chairperson, Ms Lungi Mnganga-Gcabashe, said the department should provide additional funding for the programme to accommodate increasing demand, implement awareness programmes, and strengthen post-funding support to ensure the funded projects are sustainable.

“NEF must also increase its own funding because it is clear that there is a demand for this support and should consider stretching the repayment period because tourism projects take long to break even,” said the Chairperson.

Commenting on the SEFA presentation, Ms Mnganga-Gcabashe, said the entity should expedite processing applications for funding as there seems to be slow progress.
She also advised the two agencies and the department to consider the quality of jobs created through these programmes versus the quantity of menial jobs.

“We also need to ensure equitable geographical share of the programmes. Instead of approving projects in more developed areas, we must spread to previously disadvantaged communities,” she said.

Vaal River cleared of water lettuce, water hyacinth

Location: News

Vaal River cleared of water lettuce, water hyacinth

The Department of Water and Sanitation has officially opened the boating season on the Vaal River, marking a significant achievement in the battle against the invasive aquatic plants that had been causing challenges.

Boaters and recreational enthusiasts gathered at Stonehaven on the Vaal at the weekend to commemorate the milestone and enjoy the pristine waters.

The department said with the removal of the water lettuce and water hyacinth, the river is now free of invasive plants, allowing for a safer and more enjoyable boating experience.

For several months, the Vaal River had been plagued by the rapid spread of water lettuce and water hyacinth.

“These invasive species had taken over large areas of the river, choking out native plant life and disrupting the ecosystem. The situation was exacerbated by high levels of pollution in the river catchment, which fuelled the growth of these plants,” the department said.

The department took action to address the issue in collaboration with various stakeholders, including the Vaal River Community and Rand Water.

Through a combined effort, water lettuce and water hyacinth were successfully removed, allowing the river to start the process of recovery.

To prevent a reoccurrence of this problem, the department has appointed and funded Rand Water to implement a proactive preventative program.

“This program aims to ensure that the Vaal River Barrage reservoir never experiences the same level of invasive aquatic weed coverage again. By taking a proactive approach, the department hopes to mitigate future infestations and protect the ecological health of the river,” the department said.

The restoration of the Vaal River is not only important for the preservation of the environment, but also for the well-being of the communities that rely on it.

“As the river regains its biodiversity and becomes cleaner, it will provide a healthier habitat for aquatic life and become a more attractive destination for outdoor activities.

“Moreover, the improved ecological health of the river will have a positive impact on local businesses that depend on the river for tourism and recreational activities.

“The successful removal of the water lettuce and water hyacinth on the Vaal River is a testament to the dedication and collaboration of various stakeholders. The efforts put forth by the DWS, Rand Water, and the Vaal River Community have shown that with a united front, it is possible to overcome environmental challenges and restore the natural beauty of our waterways,” the department said. – SAnews.gov.za

North West provincial government advertises over 160 jobs

The North West Provincial Government has advertised the first batch of over 160 vacant positions across provincial departments.

According to the statement, this is part of strengthening the provincial government’s capacity to deliver services and open the public service to capable professionals, graduates, youth and women.

North West Premier Lazarus Mokgosi said the recruitment drive which started over the weekend aims to create work opportunities for qualifying youth unemployed graduates and fight the scourge of unemployment in the province.

“We are embarking on a developmental trajectory that is aimed at capacitating the State and will see to the full implementation of the plans we have set out for ourselves in the seventh administration. But of critical importance is to take a lead as government in job creation,” Mokgosi explained.

Through the implementation of the province’s growth and developmental strategy, the province will be guided by the newly instituted Investment and Economic Advisory Council (IEAC).

The plan is to create over 100 000 jobs in tourism, agriculture and construction in the next five years.

“The creation of jobs must be a multifaceted approach which must include the private sector. We initiated engagements with various stakeholders on how best we can respond to the astronomical figures of unemployment in the province, and I believe that all our efforts will yield the desired results,” Mokgosi added.

National Parks Week to get underway

National Parks Week to get underway

Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Minister, Dr Dion George says the National Parks Week serves as a profound reminder of the shared heritage and awe-inspiring landscapes that define South Africa.

“We celebrate the deep and lasting connection between South Africans and the natural world that surrounds us. South African National Parks Week is about fostering that connection by inviting everyone to experience the wonders that these parks have to offer free of charge,” George said.

The Minister was speaking at the launch of National Parks Week at the Marakele National Park in Thabazimbi, Limpopo on Sunday. This year the National Parks Week will run from Monday, 09 September- 15 September.

On the dates of 13 to 15 September only selected parks will still provide free entry to South African day visitors.
“South Africa presides over a network of 21 national parks, each of which is managed by SANParks [South African National Parks] in six provinces,” George said.

The Minister added that the parks belongs to South Africans and that everyone should take collective responsibility to protect and preserve them for generations to come.

“Now in its 19th year, National Parks Week has become a powerful platform to showcase the invaluable natural and cultural treasures we hold. By offering free access, SANParks is extending an open hand to all South Africans in order to foster a deeper appreciation for the rich biodiversity and historical significance found within our parks.

“As we reflect on the importance of the National Parks Week and our shared responsibility, it is equally important to look ahead. Our vision for South Africa’s national parks cannot be limited to conservation, it must extend to revitalisation and growth.

“By involving young people in conservation efforts, we create a virtuous cycle. As up-and-coming generations connect with nature, they develop a sense of ownership, which in turn drives them to protect these resources for themselves and future generations.

Career pathways

“More than that, the development of our parks will present a wealth of opportunities and potential career pathways,” he explained.

The Minister said that by learning about biodiversity, ecosystems and the tourism industry, young people will be able to leverage these natural assets into fulfilling careers in fields such as conservation, ecotourism and environmental management and protection.

Nation building

“Our national parks serve as a reminder of what we can achieve when we work together. By combining the efforts of local communities, business leaders and political representatives in the success of these parks, we strengthen the ties that bind us as a nation,” the Minister said.

A Thabazimbi resident, Prince Ngaoko told SAnews that he is happy with the SANParks initiative and that he is going to use the opportunity to teach his two kids about wild animals.

“Our children grow up without knowing the different types of animals, this is an opportunity to show them the animals,” Ngaoko said.

Echoing same sentiments was Nthati Serorisi from Belabela who said she is going to take her kids to Marakele National Park.

“It is important that our kids should know the different kinds of animals and that they should learn about preserving the country’s heritage,” Serorisi said.

Visiting national parks

The annual South African National Parks Week provides all South Africans with the opportunity of exploring their local national park at absolutely no cost.

The inaugural National Parks Week was held in 2006 and was aimed at linking the South African national parks system to the global national movement and to also showcase the best of South Africa’s national parks.

The week grants free access to most of the 21 national parks for day visitors, especially people from the local communities. It should be noted that free access to parks does not include free access to accommodation facilities and other tourist activities.

Some of the parks will be extending the week to include weekends. For individual park dates and participating parks please visit: https://www.sanparks.org/about/events/parks_week/default.php

National Parks Week has seen an influx of day visitors in all participating parks since its inception in 2006. SANParks also uses this time to cultivate a sense of pride in South Africa’s natural, cultural and historical heritage as protected and preserved by the national parks system.

SANParks Vision 2040

SANParks recently embarked on an ambitious project, the SANParks Vision 2040 which in part is about cultivating a collective sense of community, healing, and inspiration that resonates with all South Africans.
Vision 2040 is about looking to the future and reimaging the way we conservation is done.

SA National Parks Week has proved to be a successful campaign that provides education and awareness about South Africa’s inclusive approach to conservation.

Whilst offering an opportunity to experience South Africa’s rich natural and cultural heritage, attention is also drawn to the sustainable development practices made possible through partnerships with key role players like communities living adjacent to national parks, businesses, scientists and tourists.

Every year SANParks aims to increase the number of citizens that are granted free access to national parks.
Since the start of the programme, some 785 621 South Africans have been afforded the opportunity to enter national parks. – SAnews.gov.za

Tourism remains a key driver of the economy

Location: News

Tourism remains a key driver of the economy

The tourism sector remains a key driver of South Africa’s economy, says Tourism Deputy Minister Maggie Sotyu.

Speaking at the recent Tourism Women’s Stakeholder Engagement, Sotyu said the Department of Tourism, through its programmes, gives expression to its mandate for inclusive economic growth and to grow the tourism sector.

“It is in this context that government will continue to create a conducive environment for youth, women and people with disabilities in tourism to pursue tourism careers including entrepreneurship.

“The world's fastest growing employment sector, tourism continues to adapt to new trends and South Africa is building the sector to ensure its sustainability for future generations. To drive sustained and inclusive growth of [the] tourism sector, we need to boost the talent pool. A demand-led skill supply in the sector is therefore pivotal,” she said.

Over the years, tourism has experienced continued growth and has undergone diversification to become one of the fastest growing economic sectors.

Programmes by the department include the Wine Service Training Programme, Chefs Training Programme, Professional Cookery, Food Safety Quality Assurers Programme, Food and Beverages Training, Tourism Monitors Programme and Tourist Guiding.

Deputy Minister Sotyu said the benefits of these programmes remain economic relief through stipends, placement in tourism establishments for exposure and experience and accreditation ranging from National Qualifications Framework (NQF) level 2 to NQF level 4.

“We will continue working with social partners to identify essential and demand-led skills required in the tourism sector and build the requisite skills through our departmental funding.

“The Tourism Incentive Market Access Support Programme offers partial financial support through contribution towards the cost of exhibition space, return airfare and hotel accommodation to qualifying small tourism enterprises to participate and exhibit at selected international tourism marketing platforms,” Sotyu said.

Tourism Month

Tourism Month is celebrated annually in September and provides a heightened month-long focus on the importance of the sector to the South African economy.

It features themed activities that are aligned to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation’s (UNWTO) World Tourism Day celebrations.

This year’s World Tourism Day will be celebrated in the Northern Cape Province under the localised theme: “Tourism and Peace – 30 years of connecting People to Places and Cultures”.

The event will be a celebration of the nation’s diverse cultural and historical heritage that continues to foster peace in South Africa, making the country a preferred holiday destination.

This global observance day by The United Nations World Tourism Organisation aims to foster awareness of tourism’s social, cultural, political and economic value and the contribution that the sector can make towards reaching the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Tourism Sector Recovery Plan

Tourism Month encourages South Africans to travel domestically to sustain jobs and support the recovery of tourism in line with the Tourism Sector Recovery Plan.

The department developed the plan with the tourism sector, and it contains a set of interventions to protect and rejuvenate supply, reignite demand and strengthen enabling capability to support the sector’s recovery.

“Tourism is a significant pillar of our economy and presents us with the best chance of increasing social inclusion by making heritage and tourism work for social, spatial and economic growth. But tourism is so much more than generating revenue. It also generates goodwill. Tourism is about the people of South Africa – united in diversity,” Sotyu said.

South Africa recently welcomed the latest inscription of the South African human rights and liberation struggle sites in the prestigious list of UNESCO’S World Heritage Sites.

Mayor welcomes re-opening of the Hilton Hotel in Durban

eThekwini Municipality mayor, Cyril Xaba, has welcomed the re-opening of the Hilton Hotel Durban, which will significantly benefit the City’s tourism economy.

Xaba noted that the reopening of the hotel is timely as it comes at the start of Tourism Month, which is celebrated annually in September.

“The hotel’s re-opening will add to the luxury executive accommodation inventory of Durban. The phased re-opening of the hotel will also strategically amplify the city’s business case when bidding to host national and international conferences,” the mayor said.

Apart from enhancing the tourism experience for visitors in the city, Xaba said the re-opening of the hotel will contribute to job creation.

"The Hilton Hotel is also a great added advantage for the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (Durban ICC), which is situated near the hotel.

“When the Durban ICC conducts their product promotion, it will be characterised by the easy accessibility to prestigious accommodation which further instils business travel confidence.

“The convenient accessibility is also an advantage for dignitaries and high security risk patrons as there is no long-distance travel as all business travel purpose facilities are within easy reach. We are excited that our drive to attract investment in the city, through our Inner-City Regeneration Programme [which] is beginning to yield positive results,” he said.

Economic spinoffs of direct Munich-Joburg flight

Economic spinoffs of direct Munich-Joburg flight

The significance of a direct flight from Munich in Germany to Johannesburg is “incalculable” for Gauteng’s economy, according to the Gauteng Department of Economic Development (GDED).

This follows the inaugural landing of the Lufthansa direct flight from Munich to Johannesburg on Wednesday.

The airliner is expected to operate at least three weekly flights between the two cities.

“The significance of this route to the Gauteng provincial economy is incalculable. Munich, the third largest metropolitan region in the European Union by gross domestic product is the nerve centre of the south German economy and a global city that serves as the headquarters for many international companies in the manufacturing, finance, telecommunications, automotive, media and logistics sectors.

“Thus, this new direct Johannesburg-Munich flight brings better connectivity to corporate companies who are headquartered in southern Germany, facilitating the further economic development and strong business relations between Germany and South Africa in general, and the Gauteng City Region in particular,” the department said in a statement.

The GDED said the launch of the route during South Africa’s Tourism Month is also significant.

Last year, some 245 259 German tourists visited South Africa – a rise from 173 146 the previous year.

“[This is] a period dedicated to shining a spotlight on tourism, its impact on the economy and livelihood. Munich is a particularly popular destination amongst tourists visiting Germany, as such, this direct flight will offer residents of Gauteng and South Africa broadly, an opportunity to explore the world with greater ease.

“Destination Gauteng is also positioned to welcome more international tourists from Germany and the broader European Union, where they will explore and enjoy the many diverse tourism offerings that the province has to offer including paleo-sciences, gastronomy, sports tourism, and quality township tourism experiences,” the statement read.

The department revealed that since the devastation of the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused a “severe loss of airlift and new routes development work”, it has been hard at work to implement a programme of, among others, route development.

“Together with our marketing partners, the [department] has implemented a protracted programme of air routes development, aggressive recruitment of new airline routes into the destination’s main international airports and support for freight, cargo and film crews, private charters, and medical rescue services.

“The Tourism Business Council of South Africa…supported this targeted work by the Gauteng Provincial Government in improving airlift capacity in the province.

“With their R5 million injection, we managed to power our marketing and coordination work resulting in the province welcoming new routes from Sao Paulo in Brazil, Abidjan in Ivory Coast, Lusaka in Zambia, Perth in Australia, eSwatini Airways, Qantas Airline and now Munich in Germany,” the GDED statement said. – SAnews.gov.za

SA to transform economy into manufacturing hub

SA to transform economy into manufacturing hub

By Nosihle Shelembe

Beijing, China - President Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa is working towards transforming the economy by turning the country into a “manufacturing hub”.

“We plan to move from being a large importer of manufactured products to being a major exporter,” the President said on Wednesday.

Addressing the South Africa-China Business Forum on the occasion of the State Visit to China, President Cyril Ramaphosa said Chinese companies will find there are innumerable business opportunities to manufacture products in South Africa using the country’s excellent industrial experience.

“We have seen this happen in our automotive industry. We have ambitious plans to modernise our infrastructure by investing in the expansion of ports, rail and road networks.

“We are on a path to revolutionise our energy sector in pursuit of low-carbon, climate resilient development,” the President said.

He said South Africa is actively seeking investment in the energy sector, with a particular focus on renewables and green hydrogen.

“China has a proven track record in developing innovative renewable energy solutions.

“Together, we can create sustainable and environmentally friendly energy solutions that benefit both our countries.

“By working together, we can create value chains that are mutually beneficial, leading to job creation and economic growth.

There is also vast untapped potential in technology,” President Ramaphosa said.

He said South Africa and China can collaborate to promote innovation, technology transfer and skills development.

“By leveraging our respective strengths and exploring new avenues of collaboration, we can create mutually beneficial partnerships.

“Our focus must now be on building stronger business relationships, promoting cultural exchanges and tourism, and creating a favourable business environment.

“The growth of the South African economy will support the success of the African Continental Free Trade Area, which opens access to a market of over 1.3 billion people,” the President said.

He said African economic integration is fast becoming a reality that creates enormous opportunities to expand production on the continent and to stimulate much greater economic activity.

“We are a country with enormous potential for growth and development. We are advantageously placed for companies looking to expand into the rest of the African continent.

“South Africa and China have vibrant, diverse and growing economies, with a wealth of opportunities for businesses wishing to expand into new markets,” the President said.

China is currently South Africa’s largest trading partner.

Bilateral trade between China and South Africa has increased by a third since 2019.

South Africa exports mainly minerals and agricultural products to China, and imports largely manufactured products from China.

“We are seeking to shift the structure of our trade profile and deepen our investment relationship.

“South Africa has one of the most advanced and diversified economies on the African continent. It has a vibrant business environment and a strong regulatory framework. It has a diverse, competitive and well-regulated financial sector,” the President said.

Since the start of South Africa’s major investment drive in 2018, Chinese companies have made investment pledges to the value of over R18 billion in the manufacturing, resources, finance and agro-processing sectors. This is the equivalent of US $1 billion.

“In the last six weeks, a number of Chinese companies have increased investments to support the expansion of their operations.

“These investment commitments are testament to the resilience of the South African economy and the many opportunities for foreign and domestic investors.

“It is up to us to seize these opportunities and take the economic relationship between our two countries to the next level,” the President said.

He said South Africa has investment opportunities in the electric vehicle sector, renewable energy, green hydrogen and energy storage.

It has further opportunities in infrastructure, manufacturing, mining, beneficiation of critical minerals, and the digital economy.

“Let us work together to seize this opportunity and continue to build a more prosperous future for our respective countries,” the President said. – SAnews.gov.za

Beneficiaries express gratitude for Green Tourism Incentive Programme

Location: News

Beneficiaries express gratitude for Green Tourism Incentive Programme

The Department of Tourism has invited eligible tourism enterprises to apply for support under the Green Tourism Incentive Programme’s (GTIP) 10th application window.

The window opened on 2 September 2024 and will remain open until 28 February 2025.

The GTIP was developed by the Department of Tourism in partnership with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) to enable and encourage tourism enterprises to improve efficiency in the utilisation of energy and water resources in their operations.

In this way, the programme not only promotes compliance with responsible tourism principles, but also offers a mechanism for enterprises to reduce operational costs so they can operate in a sustainable and competitive manner.

The GTIP has enjoyed much success from tourism enterprises who applied for support.

Mokgaetji Flora Phala from Mminanoko Eco Guesthouse in Limpopo said: “I was spending R2 500 on electricity costs per month. I now spend R500 a month, saving between R1 500 to R2000 a month following the installation of energy solutions. The GTIP is a great initiative that helps a lot and can be recommended to other businesses.”

Chris de Vries from Maribelle's B&B in Pretoria, Gauteng, said the amount spent on electricity was high before the installations, but it has gone down significantly.

“It is still too early to tell the exact amounts, but I have noticed a significant saving from the installations. I would definitely recommend other business to get access to this programme; it is very beneficial,” he said.

Meanwhile, Gugulethu Nogaya from Imvomvo Country Lodge in MaXesibeni, Eastern Cape, said energy consumption prior to the installation of energy solutions averaged at 24 000 kWh per month.

“Since the installation it has reduced our monthly energy consumption by half. We were spending approximately R60 000.00 on diesel during peak load shedding, but that has now dropped to less than R5 000 per month only when there are power outages. I would highly recommend the GTIP programme for all lodges, B&B’s and other businesses as it significantly improves margins by reducing cost and increases customer satisfactions,” he said.

The GTIP offers partial grant funding on the cost of retrofitting tourism facilities with energy and water efficiency equipment and systems. The application process to access the GTIP is done through two phases:
• Phase 1: The applying Tourism enterprises undergoes a resource efficiency audit during which appropriate efficiency measures and solutions are recommended. The cost of this audit is fully covered under the GTIP programme.
• Phase 2: Eligible applicants (who completed phase 1) are able to apply for grant funding support of between 50% and 90% on the cost of installing relevant technologies and equipment recommended during the Phase 1 (capped at a maximum of R1 million per applicant).

The GTIP is administered by the IDC and all applications are received, processed and managed by the IDC on behalf of the Department of Tourism.

Since inception in November 2017 and June 2024, the GTIP has had nine application windows from which 216 applications were approved at a total grant value of more than R140 million.

Tourism Minister, Patricia de Lille, said initiatives such as the GTIP are contributing immensely to greening the tourism sector and in the process helping to sustain the future of this sector.

“Conserving our scarce natural resource is crucial to the sustainability of the tourism sector. As we work towards the attainment of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), programmes such as the GTIP become critical in reinforcing and supporting tourism enterprises to adopt responsible tourism practices.

“Accordingly, the GTIP aims to support tourism enterprises to retrofit their facilities with green technologies such as solar PV panels and water saving measures. I therefore encourage businesses to apply for funding support under the GTIP,” the Minister said.

Tourism enterprises can visit www.tourism.gov.za or www.idc.co.za to read more on the requirements, eligibility and qualifying criteria and the application processes for the GTIP. – SAnews.gov.za

China to assist SA in alleviating poverty

By Nosihle Shelembe

Beijing, China -  As part of ongoing efforts to improve the lives of South Africans, China has committed to assist the country in tackling poverty.

This commitment was revealed in a joint statement by President Cyril Ramaphosa and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the occasion of President Ramaphosa’s State Visit to the People’s Republic of China.

“China is committed to sharing with South Africa its experience in poverty alleviation and rural revitalisation; in building poverty alleviation model villages and offering support for South Africa's coordinated urban and rural development,” the statement said on Monday.

During the State Visit, the two countries recommitted to working together towards building a high-quality China-South Africa community, with a shared future.

“To carry forward the friendship, consolidate mutual trust, expand cooperation and enhance coordination, the two Heads of State agreed to elevate the bilateral relationship to an All-round Strategic Cooperative Partnership in a New Era, underpinned by strong political ties and focused on a prosperous future with balanced trade, and accelerated transformative economic growth,” the statement said.

Improving lives

China expressed its firm support of national unity and the path of economic and social development that South Africa has chosen. It also said it respects efforts by the South African government to safeguard its national interests to improve the lives of all South Africans.

“The two sides agreed to work on strengthening cooperation and synergy between the Belt and Road Initiative and the Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan and to continue implementing the 10 Years Strategic Programme of Cooperation between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of South Africa (2020-2029), as a blueprint towards more substantive outcomes on priority political and socio-economic issues between the two sides.

“The two sides agreed to fully leverage the role of mechanisms such as the China-South Africa Joint Working Group (JWG) and the Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETC) to further expand economic and trade ties by improving the current trade structure, increasing market access and the export of value-added goods from South Africa,” the statement said.

Trade and investment

China is South Africa's largest trading partner globally, while South Africa is China’s number one trading partner in Africa. Total bilateral trade grew from R614 billion in 2022 to R692 billion in 2023.

“The two sides encouraged the respective business communities to enhance new two-way investments and increase their manufacturing bases within the proximity of the relevant source of raw materials to enable the transfer of skills technology and job creation.

“The two sides committed to providing a stable, fair and enabling business environment for companies from both sides and to ensure the safety and legitimate rights and interests of the relevant personnel, projects and institutions.

“The two sides encouraged mutual visits by economic and trade delegations, including co-hosting the New Energy Investment Conferences with South Africa and holding the Jobs Fair of Chinese-invested Enterprises in South Africa to boost local employment and improve people’s lives,” the statement said.

Deepening cooperation

The two sides agreed that promoting modernisation is the joint goal in building a high-level South Africa-China community, with a shared future.

“The two sides will deepen cooperation in traditional fields such as agriculture, health, medical sciences and infrastructure development. However, they will further seize opportunities presented by the new scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation, focusing on key areas such as the digital economy, new energies and artificial intelligence, boost cooperation on quality productive forces, and further expand mutually beneficial cooperation in renewable energy, energy storage and power transmission and distribution,” the statement said.

The two sides further agreed to continue to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in the areas of culture, women, health, youth, education, sport, media, tourism and other people-to-people cooperation fields.

As part of the State Visit, the two Presidents jointly witnessed the signing of several bilateral cooperation instruments in the following areas:

   • Cooperation of the Application of BeiDou Navigation Satellite System;
   • Sustainable Housing and Human Settlements Development;
   • Deepening Bilateral Trade Cooperation;
   • Cultural Heritage;
   • Cooperation in Prevention and Control of Foot-and-Mouth Disease;
   • Inspection, Quarantine and Sanitary Requirements for Dairy Products Exported from the Republic of South Africa to the People’s Republic of China; and the Protocol on Greasy Wool. -SAnews.gov.za

Home Affairs announces mechanism to boost tourism

Location: News

Home Affairs announces mechanism to boost tourism

In a critical step to reform the visa system and position the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) as an economic enabler by supercharging job creation in the tourism sector, the department has announced the creation of an innovative new Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS).

The scheme is set to be implemented from January 2025.

“With an initial focus on the burgeoning tourist markets of China and India, the TTOS will remove some of the key obstacles standing in the way of South Africa becoming a favoured tourism destination for the second and fifth largest economies in the world,” said the DHA in a statement on Monday.

Chinese tourists made over 100 million outbound trips in 2023, with South Africa receiving a 93,000 of these arrivals.

In comparison said the department, a country like Australia attracted over 1.4 million visitors from China in 2023.

At the moment, Indian tourists account for only 3.9% of all international visitors to South Africa – and China for only 1.8%.

In collaboration with the Department of Tourism, as well as the Presidency and Operation Vulindlela, the Department of Home Affairs has resolved to play its role in “rectifying the unacceptable economic under-performance by urgently clearing obstacles to tourism from these two major source-markets.”

After seeing the positive impact made by the Trusted Employer Scheme (TES), which provides swift and simplified visa processing services to vetted and approved businesses to attract critical skills, Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber has directed that the same principle be applied to cutting red tape and improving efficiency for tourists from non-visa exempt countries like China and India.

Group applications

Through TTOS, vetted and approved tour operators from these countries will be invited to register with the department.

In exchange for undergoing thorough screening upfront and assuming responsibility for travellers in their groups, the department will for the very first time process group applications from Chinese and Indian tourists travelling with approved operators.

Tourist visa applications processed through TTOS will be handled by a dedicated and skilled team of adjudicators to ensure swift and reliable processing, and will also benefit from the removal of restrictive red tape that currently “suffocates South Africa’s tourism potential”.

State Visit to China

“I am particularly pleased that we are able to make this announcement during the President’s State Visit to China, as it sends a powerful message that the Government of National Unity is serious about unlocking our country’s vast tourism and economic potential,” said Minister Schreiber.

READ | President Ramaphosa to lead SA delegation to China for State Visit

“Research indicates that boosting tourism by only 10% per year can boost annual economic growth by 0.6% and create tens of thousands of new jobs for South Africans. Travelling in large groups is the preferred option for many tourists from some countries and it is time for our visa system to adapt in order to reflect and capitalise on this reality.”

READ | Ministers discuss SA, Chinese relations ahead of State Visit

“This is only the start of Home Affairs’ embrace of our role as an economic enabler. Exciting as it is, TTOS is itself but an interim measure to boost tourism while we move with speed to digitally transform Home Affairs.
“Ultimately, our vision is for a fully automated process that delivers secure tourist visa outcomes digitally and within seconds to tourists from around the world,” the Minister said.

The regulations for the TTOS will be published shortly, as well as information on how tour operators can apply with the Department of Home Affairs ahead of the scheme’s rollout in January 2025. – SAnews.gov.za

A Sky-High Triple Salute: Emirates Celebrates South Africa With Spectacular, First-Ever A380 Flypast

Location: Sport
The Emirates Group

The low-level flypast marks three milestones for Emirates (https://www.Emirates.com/) and South Africa; The flying display celebrates the return of the second daily A380 service on the Dubai-Johannesburg route from 1 September.

Emirates, the world's largest international airline, takes to the skies to celebrate its longstanding and ongoing commitment to South Africa, with the country's first ever A380 flypast. Running up the score, the remarkable low-level aerial showcase also marks Emirates' first ever flypast in Africa and the first international airline to execute such a feat in South Africa.

Honouring its shared love for rugby with over 62,000 enthusiastic spectators, Emirates flew the world's largest commercial passenger aircraft over Emirates Airline Park, just before kick-off of the much-anticipated Springboks vs All Blacks test match. Flying at an altitude of just 500 feet above the ground, the iconic Emirates double-decker aircraft saluted rugby and aviation fans, in its latest signature livery.

The Emirates A380 took off from O.R. Tambo International Airport at 16:00, travelling at a speed of 140 kts, reaching the stadium at 16:58, perfectly timed to follow South Africa and New Zealand's national anthems. The impressive aerial feat follows months of thorough and cross-functional planning between stakeholders including multiple teams at Emirates, South African Civil Aviation Authority, Airports Company South Africa, Emirates pilots, Flight Operation Managers and Air Traffic Controllers working together with the Emirates Lions team. The teams worked together across every element of the aerial display, taking into account air traffic patterns at different times of the day with different weather and wind conditions.

UAE National Captain Mubarak Al Mheiri, A380 Deputy Chief Pilot commanded the flight, joined by Captain Khalid Binsultan and Captain Abdalla Al Hammadi, both Technical Pilots for the Airbus A380 and Captain Richard Fiess, A380 Captain. Captain Mubarak has flown with Emirates for 19 years and has completed over 7,200 hours in the cockpit of the iconic A380. He has commanded similar flypasts for Emirates, including UAE National Day celebrations (http://apo-opa.co/3yXQLen) for the past four years and headlining the commercial aircraft flypast formation at the 2023 Dubai Air Show (http://apo-opa.co/3Xrar3A). He also participated in the iconic flight promoting Expo 2020 (http://apo-opa.co/3TdcRAq), which saw an A380 fly around an Emirates Cabin Crew at the very top of the Burj Khalifa; the unprecedented formation flight with the Jetman (http://apo-opa.co/3TdcSV0) team back in 2015; and with the Red Arrows (http://apo-opa.co/3Tddj1o) in 2022.

Afzal Parambil, Country Manager of Southern Africa, Emirates said, “Tonight's record-setting flypast is a powerful display of our unwavering commitment to South Africa. It represents not just an achievement of technical excellence, but encapsulates our ongoing partnership with key stakeholders in South Africa, including the Civil Aviation Authority, O.R. Tambo International Airport, Emirates Lions and, of course, the strong relationship we've built with our customers and travel partners here over the years. For almost three decades, we've unlocked an array of choices for our customers, by offering an outstanding on-ground and in-flight experience coupled with seamless global connectivity, and we're not slowing down now. We look forward to the next 30 years, and beyond, of serving South Africa and spotlighting its many attractions to the world.”

Pieter Burger, Ellis Park Stadium Managing Director, said, “The flyover has become such a pre-match entertainment staple at the iconic Emirates Airline Park. First witnessed in 1995 at the final of the international rugby showpiece where the South African national rugby team was victorious, to have had this moment tonight against the very same opposition was a thrilling experience for fans watching at the stadium and at home.

We are extremely grateful to our long-time partner Emirates who were pivotal towards the success of this project, together with all other role players involved. From a lasting memory perspective, this will certainly be up there for those who had the privilege to witness the moment.”

The flypast also marks the return of Emirates' second A380 service on the Dubai-Johannesburg route, enhancing more customer choice and travel options with Emirates' iconic onboard products and world-class service. EK761 departs Dubai at 04.05, landing in Johannesburg at 10:15, with the return flight, EK762, departing Johannesburg at 13.25 and touching down in Dubai at 23.45, perfectly timed for onward connections to key destinations in the Far East, Europe and the Middle East.

Emirates is one of the world's biggest supporters of rugby. In South Africa, Emirates' investment in the sport is headlined by its steadfast title sponsorship of the Emirates Lions, including naming rights of the team's home stadium, Emirates Airline Park. The airline also sponsors the action-packed Cape Town Sevens, a regular fixture on the Sevens World Series calendar and one of the most popular live sporting events in South Africa, regularly drawing over 100,000 spectators.

Globally, Emirates can be found at the centre of the action from grassroots to professional leagues as the sponsor of Rugby World Cup since 2007, with prominent presence planned at the upcoming 2027 World Cup in Australia.

Firmly established as a long-term partner of South African aviation, tourism, and trade, Emirates has been serving the market for 29 years, connecting over 20 million travellers to/from South Africa with more than 140 destinations on its vast global network, via Dubai. The airline serves customers traveling to and from South Africa with 42 weekly flights to Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban, with additional connectivity to regional points across the country offered by its codeshare and interline partners South African Airways, Airlink, Cemair, and FlySafair.

Government places the transfer of land to women under the spotlight

Government places the transfer of land to women under the spotlight

Minister in the Presidency responsible for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, has committed the department to prioritise the transfer of land, wealth and income earning ability to organised women.

Addressing the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature Women’s Parliament on the Economic and Social Empowerment of Women on Friday, Chikunga said the historic treatment of women as minors who are incapable of owning property, continues to reproduce itself today through landlessness and its related disadvantages.

“Through integrated farming value-chain cooperatives as well as a cooperative banking institution, we are determined to see to it that women take ownership and control of land for productive and commercial purposes.

“We will ensure that women and youth have access to land for agricultural purposes and related economic activities. Land is wealth, wealth that has income earning potential,” Chikunga said.

During the Opening of Parliament Address (OPA) last month, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced massive plans to ramp up a green manufacturing sector over the next five years and mentioned Mpumalanga as a priority.

Chikunga said the department will ensure that women are at the centre and do not remain in the margins of these projects.

Emerging Industrialists Accelerator Programs

The Minister said the department has conceptualised a series of Emerging Industrialists Accelerator Programs and intends to rally all relevant stakeholders, particularly state-owned entities (SOEs), and industry associations behind their implementation.

“These programs will target emerging women industrialists in key sectors, including energy security, the maritime, defence and aerospace industries, and agriculture, among others. The recent Sola Mamas initiative will be scaled up and strengthened to reach more women.

“Participating emerging industrialists will work alongside experienced industry associations, receiving support from ideation through to product development, financing, market access, and commercialization pathways,” she explained.

Emerging Industrialists Fund

To support these initiatives, the Minister said the department will advocate for the establishment of an Emerging Industrialists Fund, dedicated to supporting beneficiation and transforming young people’s ideas into productive economic activities.

The Minister emphasised that while investment must come from both the public and private sectors, the state must take the lead as the investor of first resort.

“For example, the tourism industry in Mpumalanga has limitless potential. We need to channel our young women to this industry, not just as employees but owners and operators of tourism infrastructure.”

Enrolment of National Youth Service recruits

Chikunga also announced that work is underway to ensure that the first round of the National Youth Service (NYS) recruits are enrolled before the end of the financial year.

“A minimum of 50% of the beneficiaries of this program will be women, including unemployed graduates and those who have completed Grade 12 but are currently sitting at home. Here in Mpumalanga, we must make sure that the youth of this province, particularly rural youth and those in farming communities, are not left behind.”

Launched by Deputy President Paul Mashatile in May this year, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF)-led NYS is a special project that will be piloted and implemented in the country’s poorest districts, where most youngsters are unemployed.

READ | Mashatile launches SANDF-led youth initiative to create jobs, entrepreneurship

The project is targeting no less than 125 000 youth in its first year of rollout.

Chikunga said through this programme, the department will be rallying industry associations, including SOEs, universities, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and participating sister departments behind a nationally coordinated and de-siloed effort to combat youth unemployment.

“We will be training emerging industrialists in the design, manufacturing, piloting and applications of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs/drones) from small drones used to inspect borders, to large fixed-wing UAVs applied in mining, construction, oil and gas and related fields,” Chikunga said. – SAnews.gov.za

Deepening government, business partnership critical for SA

Deepening government, business partnership critical for SA

President Cyril Ramaphosa says although the partnership between business and government has yielded results in sectors such as energy and logistics, much more can be done collaboratively to address two of South Africa’s most pressing challenges – unemployment and economic growth.

The President was delivering the keynote address during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Business Unity South Africa (BUSA).

“With our far-reaching reforms gaining momentum, the second phase of our partnership with business requires a firm focus on employment creation. This is where we need to strengthen the partnership.

“Business continues to support programmes like the Youth Employment Service and the SA Youth National Pathway Management Network. These initiatives connect young unemployed South Africans with opportunities for work experience, jobs and skills. But there is much more we need to do,” he said.

President Ramaphosa highlighted that government and business are in agreement about various areas where work can be done to stimulate economic growth and employment.

“We must accelerate the work to overhaul the visa regime to attract critical skills, investment and tourism. We need to make use of the opportunities we have identified in tourism, business process outsourcing and the digital economy.

“We agree on the urgency of equipping the workforce with digital skills to take advantage of the new world of work. We agree on the need to use private sector capital to fund the growth of small businesses, particularly in under-serviced areas like townships and rural areas.

“As the Government of National Unity, we seek to deepen this partnership [with business] so that we can together build a conducive environment for investment, growth and job creation,” he said.

A government at work

President Ramaphosa told the BUSA AGM that for its part, the seventh administration is already at work to make good on its commitment to growing the economy.

“As we outlined in the Opening of Parliament Address, the apex priority of this administration is to drive inclusive growth. This is essential if we are to create employment.

“We are therefore focused on sectors with high potential for growth and employment, such as technology, manufacturing, agriculture and renewable energy.

"We are committed to ensuring that economic growth benefits all South Africans, especially the marginalised and underserved communities. This means supporting SMMEs [small, medium and micro enterprises] and ensuring equitable access to opportunities.

“Growing our exports is a priority. We are committed to working with business and other social partners to improve the global competitiveness of local industries. We are working to streamline export processes to address tariff and non-tariff barriers, and to provide financial and technical assistance to exporters,” the President said.

Furthermore, government will continue on its reform path and with providing opportunities for education and skills development.

“We will continue on the path of structural and regulatory reform to improve the business operating environment. We are committed to a stable policy environment that stimulates investment.

“A skilled workforce is the backbone of a thriving economy. As government, we will continue to invest in education and vocational training to equip young people with the skills needed in a rapidly changing economy,” the President said.

Partnerships

President Ramaphosa maintained that government remains committed to its partnership with BUSA to “drive economic growth that improves the quality of life of all South Africans”.

He added, however, that it is pivotal to maintain active and continuous engagement to sustain the partnership.

“We must accept that there will, from time to time, be areas on which we may disagree. We should not let this deter us from the work we need to do.

“Rather we should remain engaged in dialogue with a view to finding solutions that serve the interests of the country. Clear communication is crucial for building trust and ensuring that policies are informed by the realities on the ground.

“We must continue to work together. We must leverage our collective resources, expertise and passion for our country’s future. Let us seize this moment to build a more inclusive, prosperous South Africa. Let us build a South Africa where every citizen has the opportunity to contribute to and benefit from our economic progress,” President Ramaphosa said. – SAnews.gov.za
