Johannesburg, 27 June 2024: The natural environment is the foundation upon which our societies are built, providing us with essential resources such as clean air, water, and food. It is a source of beauty and inspiration, and it plays a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance necessary for all life forms to thrive. However, the environment is under increasing pressure from human activities, and its degradation poses a significant threat not only to our current way of life but also to the prospects of future generations.

Protecting the natural environment is critical for several reasons:

1. Biodiversity Conservation: The variety of life on Earth, known as biodiversity, is essential for ecosystem resilience. Each species, no matter how small, has a role to play in the larger ecological puzzle. Loss of biodiversity can lead to the collapse of ecosystems, which are vital for human survival.

2. Climate Stability: Natural environments like forests and oceans act as carbon sinks, absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and mitigating the effects of climate change. Preserving these areas is crucial for maintaining climate stability, which is essential for our children’s future.

3. Sustainable Resources: The environment provides resources that are vital for human survival. Overexploitation of these resources can lead to scarcity, which can have dire consequences for future generations. Sustainable management ensures that our children and their children will have access to these resources.

4. Health and Wellbeing: There is a direct link between the health of the natural environment and human health. Pollution and environmental degradation can lead to a host of health problems. By protecting the environment, we also safeguard the health of our children.

5. Economic Benefits: Many economies rely heavily on the natural environment, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and fisheries. Protecting the environment ensures the sustainability of these industries for future generations.

6. Ethical Responsibility: We have an ethical obligation to preserve the planet for future generations. It is unjust to pass on a degraded environment to our children, who had no part in causing the damage.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has highlighted the reciprocal relationship between humans and nature, emphasising that when we protect nature, nature protects us. Similarly, the World Economic Forum has discussed the importance of taking responsibility for future generations as a catalyst for climate action. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) also underscores the significance of protected areas in maintaining healthy ecosystems and supporting human well-being.

The protection of our natural environment is not just a concern for the present but a critical investment in the future. It is about ensuring that our children, and their children after them, inherit a world that is as rich, diverse, and vibrant as the one we enjoy today.

This Youth month, The Indalo Private Game Reserve Association launches an impassioned call to keep challenging the proposed development of misplaced wind farms that endanger the very fabric of Makhanda, the Eastern Cape region and the future of our natural environment.

The call is clear: protect our heritage, preserve our biodiversity, and stand firm against the ecological injustice threatening our children’s future!
