Today, I held a public meeting with residents of Tjovitjo in Orange Farm (Ward 6, Region G), to understand their challenges with service delivery. This engagement is one of many others that are aimed at ensuring that residents support with my priorities to fix Joburg.

The living conditions in Tjovitjo are a far cry from the democracy, equality, and service delivery that citizens should enjoy. Over the years, the ANC has normalised township enclaves of hopelessness and neglect across many townships in the city.

Many of the shacks that residents have erected are built on wetlands that pose a serious safety risk. There is no reliable water and electricity to guarantee a sanitary way of life. As for safe roads, there are none to speak of. This deplorable state of misgovernance is all that the ANC has to offer residents.

This is why I have unfinished business to fix Joburg. Now more than ever, residents need strong leadership that will deliver dignity for all. My plan to fix Joburg is clear – to formalise informal settlements and place the city in a position to foster investments that creates jobs.

This means that Ward 6 residents should benefit from service delivery regardless of their postcode. I emphasised the importance of reclaiming the inner city and create affordable accommodation. This is to ensure that they are located closer to economic opportunities, instead of spending 60% of their salaries on transportation.

I reminded residents of the power of their vote, and to use it wisely for me to return as the Mayor of Joburg.
