• The Germany SailGP Team presented by Deutsche Bank has entered the winners circle, claiming their first event victory at the Rolex Switzerland Sail Grand Prix in tricky, light conditions on the waters of Lake Geneva. Germany clinched the top spot ahead of Australia in second and Switzerland in third, in a high-stakes final that saw some of the best foiling conditions of the day.
• Football – Arsenal overcame a stubborn Manchester City defence to claw back a 1-1 draw in the big match at the Emirates, with substitute Gabriel Martinelli nicking the equaliser in injury time.
• World Athletics Championships – Georgia Hunter Bell and Keely Hodgkinson won silver and bronze respectively in the world 800m final – with their bid for a 1-2 finish foiled by Kenya’s Lilian Odira. The championships closed with Team GB failing to win a single gold for the first time in 22 years.
• Formula One – Max Verstappen won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, after world championship leader Oscar Piastri crashed out in the first lap – while Lando Norris failed to take advantage, finishing in seventh place.
• Botswana produced a brilliant performance to win the men’s world 4x400m relay in atrocious conditions, edging out the US and South Africa in a blanket finish to become the first African winners of the event.
• A late Gabriel Martinelli goal gave Arsenal a 1-1 draw at home against Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.
• Remco Evenepoel of Belgium won a third successive men’s individual time trial title at the World Road Championships in Kigali, Rwanda, obliterating the field and easily overcoming the challenge of Tadej Pogačar.
• The stage is set for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Africa Qualifier 2025, with Kenya, Botswana, Tanzania and Malawi assembling to complete the eight-team line-up for the regional showdown. They join Uganda, Nigeria and Namibia, who had arrived earlier, while hosts Zimbabwe round out the tournament field. The Qualifier will run from 26 September to 4 October, with the top two finishers earning a place in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka.
• In the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, Piastri crashed on the first lap after starting in ninth and did not finish the race, while his teammate and championship rival, Lando Norris, finished seventh. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen led the race from start to finish, improving on his return to form with a second straight race victory.
• Australian cyclist Jay Vine finished second in the men’s time trial at the cycling world championships in Rwanda. Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel won the event for a third successive time, beating Vine by one minute and 14 seconds and demonstrating his superiority in the time trial discipline.
• The Brisbane Lions are into a third successive AFL grand final after defeating Collingwood 100-71 on Saturday night. The Lions will go for back-to-back premierships against the Geelong Cats, who comfortably beat Hawthorn 115-85 on Friday night.
• The race to the NRL grand final has been whittled down to just four teams following the weekend’s semi-finals. On Saturday, the Cronulla Sharks beat the Canberra Raiders 36-12. The Raiders are just the second team in the NRL era (after the Dragons in 2009) to win the minor premiership and then fail to win a single finals match. Then on Sunday, the Penrith Panthers continued their campaign for a fifth consecutive premiership with a dominant 46-26 victory over the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. 1927 — Gene Tunney wins a unanimous 10-round decision over Jack Dempsey at Soldier Field in Chicago to retain his world heavyweight title. The fight is marred by a long 10-count in the seventh round. Dempsey knocks Tunney to the mat, but Dempsey doesn’t go to a neutral corner. The referee doesn’t start counting until four or five seconds after Tunney is down. Tunney regains his feet and goes on to win.

1974 — The Pittsburgh Steelers and the Denver Broncos are the first teams to play to a tie, 35-35, with the new overtime rule in effect.

2006 — Alfonso Soriano became baseball’s first 40-40-40 player in Washington’s 3-2 win over the New York Mets. Soriano hit his 40th double and stole his 41st base. With 45 homers, he already was only the fourth major league player with 40 homers and 40 steals in a season.

2018 — The Atlanta Braves capped a most surprising season by clinching their first NL East crown since 2013, with Mike Foltynewicz taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning in a 5-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. A year after going 70-92, manager Brian Snitker and his Baby Braves surged back into the playoffs.

2023 — By hitting his 40th homer of the season, Ronald Acuña Jr. becomes just the fifth member of the exclusive 40-40 club consisting pf players whp have hit 40 homers and stolen 40 bases in the same season. He already has over 60 steals, the first player to ever combine the two totals, and has a chance to reach 70. The Braves defeat the Nationals, 9-6. For the second time in a month, Aaron Judge hits three homers in a game to lead the Yankees to a 7-1 lead over the Diamondbacks. Judge had never had such a game before this year, and becomes the first player in Yankees history to have two in one season.
