• The finalist at last year’s U20 Women’s Week, DHL Western Province and Border, again delivered strong performances on the opening day of the 2025 edition of the event, played at Queens High School in Johannesburg on Monday. Border secured the biggest win of the day by beating Boland, while WP outplayed KwaZulu-Natal with ease. The Golden Lions also secured a good win in the Premier Division of the tournament by beating Free State while the Blue Bulls proved too strong for Eastern Province in the final match of the day.
• South Africa beat New Zealand by 6 wickets. SA strangled the White Ferns in the first innings, with Devine’s latest heroics going unrewarded. Again. Kerr & co. barely made a dent against SA in the second innings, as the Proteas strolled to victory.
• Tazmin Brits’ fifth ODI century of the year steered South Africa to a six-wicket win over New Zealand for their first victory of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025.
• Eastern Province and South African No 1 squash player Hayley Ward continued her steady rise up the world rankings after moving to No 73 following her triumph at the SPAC Open in São Paulo, Brazil, last weekend.
• Aminul Islam was re-elected as the BCB president.
• Former West Indies all-rounder Bernard Julien has passed away.
• The Vizag stadium will name stands after Mithali Raj & Ravi Kalpana.
• The Proteas Women defeated New Zealand by six wickets at the Cricket World Cup, thanks to a century by Tazmin Brits and four wickets from Nonkululeko Mlaba.
• Uefa has set a precedent by approving Barcelona and Villareal’s proposal to play their LaLiga match in the US. The game is scheduled for 21 December.
• Daria Kasatkina has become the latest player to lament the tennis schedule as she announced an early end to her season due to reaching “breaking point”.
• The Brisbane Broncos are Australia’s only publicly listed sports club: The club’s NRL and NRLW premiership double sent its share price soaring more than 26% by the close of trading on Monday, capping a landmark week for Brisbane, and showing that for the Broncos, winning really is good business.
• Queensland batter Marnus Labuschagne scored 160 runs in the opening innings of his first Sheffield Shield match of the season against Tasmania. Labuschagne’s knock helped Queensland reach a huge total of 612, with Matthew Renshaw adding 128 and captain Usman Khawaja 69. The 31-year-old is pushing to reclaim his spot in Australia’s Test side ahead of the five-Test Ashes series against England starting in November.
• Professional cycling team Israel Premier Tech will drop “Israel” from its name after a series of protests and exclusions from major races.
• Ange Postecoglou says he’s ready for a fight after Nottingham Forest’s fifth defeat in seven games left his future at the club under serious pressure.
• On Saturday, Australian captain Mitch Marsh smashed his first T20 international century to lead Australia to a thrilling two-wicket win over New Zealand in Mount Maunganui, sealing a 2-0 series victory.
• Australia’s second match of the women’s cricket World Cup against Sri Lanka in Colombo was rained out on Saturday, with both teams receiving one point as a result.
• The All Blacks secured a 2-0 Bledisloe Cup series win with a 28-14 victory over the Wallabies in Perth on Saturday night.

• It was a huge weekend for rugby league, with the Brisbane Broncos claiming both the men’s and women’s premierships, record TV audiences tuning in, and Australia naming its squads for the upcoming international season.
• Rugby union – Lewis Moody, the former England rugby captain and 2003 World Cup winner, has been diagnosed with motor neurone disease. The 47-year-old told the BBC he was having trouble accepting what the news meant for his future, and for his family, though his symptoms were relatively mild.
• Football – Steven Gerrard is under strong consideration for a return to Rangers after the Scottish club confirmed the sacking of Russell Martin. Martin’s ill-fated Ibrox tenure ended with the manager leaving the Falkirk Stadium via a side door and a waiting car after a 1-1 draw which left Rangers 11 points from the summit of Scotland’s top flight after just seven games.
• Formula One – Lando Norris delivered an uncompromising riposte to the complaints of his angry McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri after the pair clashed at the Singapore Grand Prix, declaring that anyone who would not attempt a similar overtake “should not be in Formula One”.
• The inaugural Betway Women’s Club Championships (WCC) got underway at Alberton Rugby Club in Gauteng on Monday, signaling an historic day for the women’s game in South Africa.In the historic first-ever match in an official women’s national club championship tournament, Sol Plaatjie University edged out wildcards Raiders 24-17 after leading 10-5 at half-time. The groundbreaking, eight-match day finally came to a close almost 12 hours later, with Van der Stel-Evergreens edging hosts Pirates 10-5 after a long lightning-enforced delay eight minutes into the feature game.
• South Africa opening batter Tazmin Brits has climbed two slots to a career-best fourth place in this week’s update of the ICC Women’s ODI Player Rankings. She reached fourth place in the batters’ list after scoring 101 in the Proteas’ six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup on Monday.
• Lee Radford has been named as the new Scotland defence coach and will begin his role ahead of the Quilter Nations Series matches in November. Radford currently works for Northampton Saints where he has been their defence coach for two years, winning the Gallagher PREM in 2024 and reaching the final of the Investec Champions Cup this year. He will continue to work with Saints this season, combining his role with Scottish Rugby, before going full-time with the national team. He has been contracted until the end of the 2027/28 season.
• India’s Abhishek Sharma and Kuldeep Yadav are in contention for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award for September along with Zimbabwe’s Brian Bennett, while Smriti Mandhana of India, Sidra Amin of Pakistan and Tazmin Britts of South Africa form the shortlist for the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award.
• The NFL’s injury bug continues to bite, and Week 5 was no exception. This week, rookie Omarian Hampton joined the IR with an ankle injury that will sideline him for at least four games. Plus, Brock Bowers sat out to recover from a PCL injury he sustained back in Week 1. To make matters worse, reports now suggest J.J. McCarthy’s injury could keep him out for an additional two weeks.
• More than four years after the family of deceased Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs filed a wrongful death suit against the Angels, jury selection will begin Monday in Orange County Superior Court.
• Chargers running back Omarion Hampton will be placed on injured reserve, coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday, meaning the rookie first-round pick will be out for at least the next four games.
• Michelle Cooper scored in the 59th minute and the Kansas City Current extended their unbeaten run to 16 straight matches with a 1-0 victory over Angel City on Monday night at BMO Stadium.

• Dylan Fletcher’s Emirates GBR became the first team to win three SailGP events this season, boosting them to the overall lead after their victory on October 4-5 in Cadiz, Spain.
• Twenty-one teams representing 14 nations competed in the 2025 Offshore Double Handed World Championship on September 23-30 in Cowes, Isle of Wight. The invitational mixed-gender event, using equipment-supplied Sun Fast 30 One Design boats, was won by France’s Théa Khelif and Thomas André (FRA 1) in a 114 nm final race to decide the title.
• The 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 World Championships are set to get under way in Cagliari, Sardinia, from October 7-12, with 14 Australian teams ready to take on the world’s best.

2011 — Minnesota Lynx beat the Atlanta Dream 73-67 to complete a three-game sweep of the WNBA championship series.

2012 — Drew Brees finishes 29 for 45 for 370 yards with four TD passes and an interception in New Orleans’ 31-24 win over San Diego.
